Top Reddit comments about Video Equipment:

> Buffered parking mode.

Dash cams pretty much come in two different veins. Excellent parking mode, Excellent build quality, Good/Fair video quality (with buffered parking mode) vs Lackluster parking mode (not buffered), good/fair/poor build quality, Excellent video quality. The A119S currently does not have a working parking mode, and if firmware is updated to support that, the expectation will be lackluster parking mode.

> IMX322 or better sensors on both channels.

Most people don't know what this means, and not all sensors of the same name are made with equal stats. Example: The small Sony Exmor sensor, isn't equivalent to the large Sony Exmor sensor of the same name.

> 1080p @ 30fps or better on both channels.

Many complain about Fair video quality, however this dash cam meets the above requirement.

  • Thinkware F50 1-CH ($69.99 USD) - Fair video quality, Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode. - Lacks a Wifi/cell phone app, but format free technology helps and reliability is top notch. ($69.99 USD) - 2nd vendor. ($90-110 USD) - 3rd vendor. - There is a coupon code for this one in the video description.

The level of expectation for all dash cams should be: Read the plate out loud, and record via audio. By footage is nice to have, but should not be expected. Even Excellent video quality might miss the plate, especially at speed, and at night. Also pen/paper write down the plate #, and call the police with telling them the number.

    > Screen available to use for pseudo-backup cam.

This requirement will servery limit your options, and I do not know many dash cams with this feature. However, you could install: Backup Camera and Monitor Kit For Car,Universal Waterproof Rear-view License Plate Car Rear Backup Camera + 4.3 LCD Rear View Monitor ($29.99 USD) or other similar devices, and it would likely be more effective.

    > Integrated voltage cutoffs to prevent battery drain.

Most hardwire kits will have this. Even cheap ones like this ($13USD) hardwire kit has it. This hardwire kit's voltage cut off is preset and not changeable. More expensive hardwire kits may have an adjustable voltage based, and/or timer based shut off.

    More expensive hardwire kits:

  • Power Magic Pro ($24 USD)

  • multi-safer ($34.95 USD)

  • Vico Power-Plus Battery Discharge Prevention (BDP) Device ($60 USD)

Built in voltage cut off is a very desirable feature, and it to be adjustable both voltage/timer based. However, only Excellent parking mode, Excellent build quality, good/fair video quality dash cams have it. Lackluster parking mode, good/fair/poor build quality, Excellent video quality dash cams do not have this feature.

    > Support over 128gb.

This is a great number, but many dash cams that you should consider, do not meet this requirement.

  • Thinkware F770 ($360 USD) - Where to purchase Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality - Good day/Superior night/Good shadow, built in wifi, built in gps. 1080P Front 1080P rear

Thinkware F770: superior night vision & Dual Save mode Maximum SD Card 64GB (Micro SD)

    ----

Anyways, I suggest fully researching your options:

Excellent Build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good/Fair video quality:

  • BlackVue DR450-1CH ($129.99 USD) Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, lacks wifi, optional gps, lack of reviews.

  • BlackVue DR430-2CH ($179.99 USD) Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, lacks wifi, optional gps, lack of reviews.

Wifi/Cellphone app adds a lot, it helps with setup, changing settings, maintenance (formatting every 30-45 days), and gives you the ability to discreetly view footage at the scene of an accident.

  • BlackSys CH-100B 2-Channel ($269.99 USD) - Excellent built quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality - Good day/Good night/Good shadow, built in wifi, optional GPS. - Receive $10 off with "top5blackboxmycar" when shopping for a dash cam over $99.99 at BlackboxMyCar.com Capacitor 1080P Front 720P rear

BlackVue DR650S-2CH Unique feature, Cellphone notifications of G sensor activation(s) in parking mode (Free), and cloud streaming feature (paid.) Maximum SD Card 128 GB (Micro SD)

BlackVue over the cloud feature part 1

BlackVue over the cloud feature part 2

  • Thinkware F770 ($360 USD) - Where to purchase Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality - Good day/Superior night/Good shadow, built in wifi, built in gps. 1080P Front 1080P rear

Thinkware F770: superior night vision & Dual Save mode Maximum SD Card 64GB (Micro SD)

Lackluster parking mode, fair/good/poor build quality, Excellent video quality: People pick these dash cams generally for video quality.

  • A119 V2 ($80-100 USD) - V1 had minor flaws but is cheaper - V2 corrected some of those flaws and had firmware improvements. + Known problems of the A119 Excellent video quality day/good night/good shadow, good/fair build quality, lackluster parking mode. Discreet.

  • A119S V2 ($100-120 USD) - This one has more potential but currently equal to the A119 due to lack of firmware improvements.

  • Mobius ($80 USD) + USB Mini hardwire kit ($13 USD) + adhesive mount ($7.95 USD) + recommended but not required Super Capacitor ($7.95 USD) instead of lipo battery.

  • Street Guardian SG9665GC ($234.95 USD Lackluster parking mode/ Excellent video quality, excellent build quality.

  • Transcend 32GB Drive Pro 520 ($186.61 USD)

    ---

A note for Micro SD Cards: Sandisk Ultra is not made for Dashcams.

What is recommended for dash cams: Transcend High Endurance or any MLC card.

Given the current prices (CAD) prices, is the Hero 2018 the best bang for the buck? (I'm not a professional photographer, and I plan on having a camera that I can use for both Snowboarding and photos/videos while travelling).

GoPro HERO 2018 - $ 236 with an extra battery

GoPro Hero 7 Silver - $ 319 with the starter kit (floating stick, head strap + case)

GoPro Hero 5 Black - $ 382 (just the camera)

From what my research showed me, it looks like:

  • The HERO won't do 4K. The other 2 will do 4K @ 30 FPS
  • Accessories for all 3 are equally widely available
  • The Hero 7 Silver is the only one with no removable battery
  • All of the 3 are water-resistant (@10 meters) without a case
  • The sound quality of all of them are comparable (despite the number of mics varying between 2 and 3)
  • All of them have E.I.S, but it looks like the Hero Silver 7 is slightly better, given the better processor
  • All of them have voice controls
  • Hero 5 Black is the only 12 MP camera, with the other two having 10 MP

ALSO: Is it true that the HERO 2018 is a firmware crippled Hero 5 Black? Can I then flash a Hero 5 Black firmware on it and have the exact same camera?

Am I missing something important here?

It looks like if I don't care about 4k (which I don't cause all of my videos go to Google Photos anyway, which compresses them because I have a free account) the Hero 2018 is a clear winner, even over the silver, because it has a removable battery.

GoPro Hero 5 Session or GoPro Hero 5 Black?

Some factors to consider:

  • Complete amateur here when it comes to cameras.

  • Want to get one of these as a birthday present for a very close friend who is also my travelling & trekking buddy

  • We currently use my One Plus 3T phone for taking pics but I'd like to better quality selfies, pics and, perhaps, videos. Priority is on taking great pics. Videos are just a plus. This is all for personal use though mind you.

  • I have looked at other types of cameras like Mirrorless cameras and DSLRs but those seem either too expensive or impractical for lugging around when trekking. The weatherproofing on the GoPro is a definite plus as well.

  • I'm on a budget and the Hero 5 Black seems really expensive but I'm not averse to the idea of saving up more for it if it really makes a difference in photo quality over the Hero 5 Session.

  • Just throwing this out there: I’ll be ordering the GoPro via a friend who’s based in the UK and will be travelling back next month to my country (no GoPro store or official dealer where I live and the models available aren’t exactly reliable or cheap since they come with the extra premium price. Hence why I’m ordering it from abroad). Just to give you guys some context, the current price of the GoPro Hero 5 Black represents approximately 60% of my monthly paycheck.

I've gone through the Sidebars, FAQs & searched a bit around on this subreddit on this particular topic and unfortunately I'm still not sure what to go for. So any information on this will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

****Do any of this at your own risk or hire a professional to do it for you.***

Here are the parts I ordered to put mine together. I'm posting this bc of PMs.

Mobius or [Cheaper Mobius but longer wait from China] (http://www.banggood.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-HD-Mini-Sports-Camera-Wide-Angle-Edition-p-917817.html) I wanted the Wide Angle Lens for a better shot

Capacitor You don't want the battery sitting in the sun. A capacitor can handle it. So you replace the battery completely with this capacitor

Windshield Mount My mobius came with a mounting bracket that fits on this mount. The mount itself is very small, but the 3M sticker is very strong.

Hardwire Kit When hard wiring this in to the car via fuse box, this knocks the voltage down from 12v to 5v, which is what the camera needs. I used some wire strippers to expose about 5" of the red and black cables. Then stripped about an inch off each cable to expose the actual wire. The red wire goes in to the add-a-circuit mentioned below, then you crimp it closed with pliers (wasn't super easy, I must be weak). You partially unscrew a metal bolt that is attached to the metal car frame as a ground ( I used the one on top of my fuse box).

USB to Mini-USB This connects from the hardwire kit to the camera or 90 degree elbow mentioned next, for a better angle. If you are setting up the auto record when external power is on, which is what you want to do for a dash cam, you need to cut a piece of electrical tape width-wise and cover the two middle pins inside the USB cable. This is because the two middle pins (2 and 3) are data pins. Leaving those exposed makes the camera think its connected to a computer and will only do data transferring. By covering them, it only get power from pins 1 and 4 and doesn't think it's connected to a computer and will actually record.

Right Angle Mini-USB to Mini-USB Adapted This just helped keep the USB cable from sticking out too much (better angle)

Add-a-circuit This is the ATO (bigger fuse), but I ended up using the ATM (Mini) because my car has both and the fuse I wanted to use ended up being a Mini. It'd be best to look through your fuse diagram and find something non-vital (meaning don't tap in to a fuse that controls ABS or airbags, etc) and switchable (meaning it only comes on when the car turns on. You don't want the camera running 24/7), figure out what type of fuse it is, and buy that size. I ended up getting my new add-a-circuit (Littlefuse) from Oreilly auto parts for $6.99 and it came with 3, 4, 7.5, and 10A fuses. Also take note of the amperage (Never use a higher amp fuse than your add-a-circuit supports because the wire gauge may not support it and melt/burn. When adding the circuit, I removed the original fuse from the fuse box, a 10A fuse and put it the first slot(my add-a-circuit supports up to 10A) and for the 2nd slot, I used a 3A fuse because the camera and radar don't draw much. You don't want to use a higher amp fuse than necessary. Also, in my car 2011 JettaSportwagen, the add-a-circuit points down or it doesn't work. Make sure it's plugged in the correct direction or it won't do anything

32GB MicroSD Card Works fine, just make sure to format it through the camera.

Unofficial but awesome Mobius Configuration Tool Use the tooltips(hover over each option) to figure out what each things does. I set mine to autorecord when external power or the button are pushed.

You can find a lot of info here: dashcamtalk.com

To summarize the connections are:

Choose a fuse from your car's fuse diagram (non-essential and switchable), pull it, place it in the correct slot of the add-a-circuit (don't go to higher amps than is supported), plug in a fuse from the add-a-circuit kit in to the other slot to protect your camera (I used a 3A), strip the hardwire kit's cables mentioned above, put the red cable (+) from the hard wire kit in the the red end of the add-a-circuit and crimp it closed, attach the black cable (-) to a screw attached to the metal car frame, tape the two middle pins (2 and 3) in the USB cable with electrical tape, plug the USB in to the female USB on the hardwire kit, run the USB cable from the fuse box around the edges of your cars trim, up by the rearview mirror, attach the right-angle mini-usb adapter, choose where you want to mount the camera (make sure to check using the USB plugged in and camera mounted to the mount, in case it bumps the rearview mirror) (I held it on the windshield about where I thought I wanted it (to behind and to the right of the rearview mirror and took some test footage, watched it on a computer, decided it looked ok, pulled the sticker cover and attached it), clean your windshield with glass cleaner, attach the mount.

At this price point, don't go with a DSLR. The T6 isn't going to be that good. Instead, I recommend getting 4 things:

  1. A Canon VIXIA HF R800. This is a good camcorder that can record at 1080p 60 frames per second. This does split the files after a certain recording limit, but that limit happens to be 12 hours, so you're fine.

  2. I recommend you also add B-roll footage, where you show off a product using smooth footage of it. This adds interest to your videos, and improves your audio retention and such. You could start with a Magnus VT-300.

  3. You need good audio, I can't stress that enough. To get started, use a portable audio recorder. The best option for around $100 is the Zoom H1. This will record all your audio and has built in microphones. You can plug it directly into the camera from there, or sync in post, whichever is easier for you. Don't plan on using the audio from camera mics. Even high end cameras aren't meant to use the built in mics for high quality audio.

  4. Last you need some lights. A good all-rounder to get started is the Viltrox L116T. They have adjustable brightness and color temperature + they can be powered by a power adapter or batteries, both of which you need to get separately.

HI /u/jake_monkey_sun - If you can stretch your budget by $23, a [used Panasonic G7 4K still/video camera with the 14-42mm kit lens from Amazon Warehouse Deals] (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-G7KS-Mirrorless-Camera-Silver/dp/B00X409O6O/ref=sr_1_1?m=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&s=warehouse-deals&ie=UTF8&qid=1451830521?tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Link] could be what you're looking for.

This camera has an external microphone input, is compatible with Panasonic power zoom lenses and will have 4 times the video resolution of a camcorder in this price class.

Here is the image quality this camera can produce:

Okay, slightly loaded question.

  1. Don't worry about having nothing to film with it. You'll find things to film. I've filmed sports practices, spontaneous nights out, and even attached my GoPro to my DSLRs horseshoe to get a nice random POV while photographing. If you're creative and feel like you WANT to FIND things to film with it then get it. World's most versatile camera by far.

  2. In response to your "is it worth buying" outright question, the way I look at it is that the Hero 4 is a (semi) pro-level camera. If you're Joe Bloggs who wants a camera to capture their holiday, or get some sweet selfies for Facebook - don't bother with the 4. A second hand 3 or even better the new plain [Hero] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NIYNUXO/ref=s9_al_bw_g421_i4) will suit you A LOT better. If you want more production values, sweet slow-motion, better looking night shots get the 4.
u/Syfilms64 · 1 pointr/SmallYTChannel

Great sound for starting out! Keep it up and you'll gain a following in no time. I'd recommend a few things to really make your videos more professional. You may not be able to afford all these things right off the bat but save up and eventually invest. It will pay off.

  1. Lighting - Grab a couple of soft box lights and really light up your scene. They're very cheap now and days and allow a more expressive video to be captured and color corrected.

  2. If you're not already, use a DSLR camera to record yourself and each individual instrument. A high quality video can make a world of difference. I saved up and bought a Panasonic Lumix G7. It's perfect for entery level / mid-range YouTubers. Interchangeable lenses, 4k/23.9fps, and 1080p/60fps.

  3. Get an action cam. It doesn't have to be a GoPro but can be a cheap knockoff. As long as it can record in 1080p at 60fps you'll be good to go. I bought a knock off one for $50 a few years ago. With this camera, you can them clamp it to the neck of your guitar for a unique view you can cut back and forth to while playing.

I think if you tackle these steps first then you can go on to improving even more. As a content creator, you'll literally NEVER stop improving and that's perfectly fine.

Yes actually..and from Amazon.com :)

http://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Camera-Official-U-S/dp/B016EIGEGU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453927247&sr=8-2&keywords=xiaomi+action+camera

Xiaomi is good, lots of positive reviews and their gadgets are often regarded as being as good as any other gadget, but far cheaper.

Then, if you want to save $20.00 and get all the accessories:
http://www.amazon.com/Legazone-Shockproof-Carrying-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B013X1NSUG/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1453927432&sr=8-13&keywords=action+camera+wifi

Do yourself a favor and go to amazon, search "action camera" and then read the reviews.
The Xiaomi one is the best though, however, if you're not doing anything high end, like maybe dash cam, or for kids to use.. these alternatives are awesome. A lot of them are compatible with current GoPro accessories too (Xiaomi is not, however)

edit: and another action camera, well-rated:

Others have provided valuable recommendations, but here is one that I haven't seen mentioned.

Mobius Action Cam

Pros

  • Great price ($70)
  • 1080p @ 30fps
  • Super durable (I've dropped mine from height about a dozen times)
  • Above-average audio recording
  • Software available for pretty extensive customization
  • Mine has lasted for two years and plenty of 100+ degree days.
  • Battery easily swapped out for cheap and durable capacitor. (Highly recommended)
  • Not very noticeable from outside.

    Cons

  • No screen (although this reduces the size, so I guess it's a pro)
  • Looks a bit weird when mounted, like an upside down Wall-E lol.
  • No WiFi capability
  • Comes with battery that does not handle heat well, capacitor sold separately.
  • Pretty obvious to passengers.
  • You have to buy mount and usb cable separately. (would recommend 10-foot cable)

In general, I'd recommend steering clear of anything with a screen that is cheaper than $100. With the only exception being an A119/A119S if you can find it on sale. I rarely hear of a Mobius failing just from normal use, and when it does fail, its usually because of intense heat, or external force.

Regardless of what you choose, you shouldn't have to pay more than $150 for a dashcam that does what you described. Let me know if you have any other questions,

    Peace.

For starters, I'd be glad to help you find the right camcorder!

Here is an option:

  1. Camera: Panasonic HC-V770K Full HD Camcorder - A fantastic camcorder for the price, just about the cheapest still with good features. It is pushing the budget a bit but i think it would be worth it. 5-axis image stabilization, 1080p with slow-mo, wide aperture for low light, timelapse mode, and more.

  2. Shotgun Mic: Rode VideoMic GO Lightweight On-Camera Microphone - A good small shotgun mic that does not require a battery (uses very little power from the camera).

  3. SD Card: SanDisk 32GB Ultra Memory Card - 2 32GB memory cards should get you plenty of record time and allow you to off-load the footage from one card while being able to use the 2nd card.

  4. Camera Bag: Ruggard Commando 25 Shoulder Bag - A great little camera bag that should fit everything you need in it. If you think it is too small, just step up to it's bigger brother the Commando 36.

  5. LED Light: Genaray LED-2100 36 LED Compact On-Camera Light - A great little on-camera LED light to add more light if you think that is going to be an issue. It can totally be removed if you need to cut down the budget and you dont think you will need it. (a smartphone light would work in a pinch if you rarely need extra light)

  6. Extra Battery: Panasonic Lithium-Ion Camcorder Battery Pack (3.6V, 1940mAh) - This is another battery of the same size as the included one. According to product specialists, it will get you ~1.5 hrs per battery. If you need to cut down on the budget, I would recommend cutting the extra battery and using the included AC adapter more often or using a USB battery pack to power the camera.

For attaching the mic, slide the included detachable cold shoe mount into the slot at the rear of the camera until it clicks, slide the mic into the cold shoe and tighten the knob to secure it in place. For attaching the LED light, screw the bar into the bottom of the camera and attach the LED light to the bar similar to attaching the mic.

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask. I hope this helps!

> I'd say get Syma X5, 300$ won't get you anything worth the money AFAIK.

I ended up sending him these two recommendations:

>Option 1 - Racing Style
>
>"This is a really solid choice if he likes the racing style quads. It's very similar to mine, actually. Same carbon fiber frame and similar internal components, except it comes pre-assembled and ready to fly. Also includes a radio, which is good chunk of the investment.

>Get that and you still have some left over for a 3S Lipo battery and a möbius camera and he's on his way. It won't have an FPV camera, so he'll be flying line of site, but that's best anyway until he's practiced.

>Option 2 - Camera Platform

>Surprisingly, this one was harder to answer. Camera platforms or your DJI Phantom Style quads must have some more sophisticated components in order to maintain stability and make them easier to fly. Or they're just marked up because, hey, Go Pro owners don't know better and can afford it.

>Anyway, this is the best option I could find, though it is $50 over budget. You get everything you need to go fly except a Go Pro, and it has a nice gimbal for one of those when he gets one.

Well, the easiest option, which a comedian I work with sometimes uses, is to just hit voice memo on his phone and drop it in his pocket. That gets the most important stuff, what his delivery sounds like and how the audience responds.

The next question is do you want to record yourself, or the audience, or both at the same time? The contrast is usually massive, with the stage being blinding bright and the audience being pitch black, so for most cheap cameras you have to pick one.

One option to consider is if you can get a line out from the house mixer, or just give them a card/drive to record to. That would give you the best audio of you, and then your recorder can get the audience noise.

Another thing to consider is that by the very nature of the event you won't be able to monitor the camera, and probably nobody else will either. You probably won't even be able to see it due to the lights, so it might walk away and you have no idea until the end of your set.

Something like a $200-$400 camcorder is probably going to be the best option here. Set it and forget it, and if it goes for a walk you're not going to be financially crippled.

Keep an eye on Amazon Goldbox as well as used sites like BHPhoto. They often have pretty decent discounts.
This is the Canadian site but this Canon camcorder is 30% off. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B019UDIL80/

Stuff like this comes up as a Lightning deal every few weeks it looks like. If you keep your eye out you can get a pretty good deal.

u/orbweaver82 · 2 pointsr/dashcams

I'm also looking and researching good dash cams and here is what I have come up with so far:

Garmin Dashcam 55($200)

  • Video Quality
  • I've heard good and bad about this, apparently it's one of the best out there right now but it had overheating issues from the start. Looks like the latest firmware update for this has resolved the overheating issues (which was like 99% of peoples complaints about it)
  • Small and inconspicuous when mounted on windshield
  • High-quality 3.7 megapixel camera with 1440p video capture; works even in low-light conditions
  • Forward collision and lane departure warnings plus alerts for nearby red light cameras and speed cameras
*GPS-enabled with automatic incident detection (G-Sensor) saves video footage on impact to show when and where events happened
  • Voice control allows you to start/stop recording, take a still picture or start/stop the Travelapse photo capture feature

    THINKWARE X500D Dashcam($255)

  • Video Quality
  • If you want a good front + rear dashcam so you can catch things happening behind you too I hear this one is one of the best for the cost
  • A Full HD 1080p dash cam with Sony Exmor image sensor and a Full HD 1080p rear cam provide complete front and rear surveillance of your vehicle
  • High performance 32GB UHS-I microSD card with SPOR (Sudden Power Off Recovery) technology specifically tailored for Thinkware Dash Cams
  • Lane departure, front collision, red light and speed camera alerts help increase driver awareness.
  • Built-in GPS Tracker embeds crucial data such as time, speed, and location data
  • Optional accessory: Hardwiring cable to enable Parking Surveillance mode

    Mobious ActionCam($70)

  • Video Quality + Audio Quality test
  • So if your looking for the best deal I hear this one is it. Shoots 1080p, can be concealed in your mirror and apparently takes really good video and sound. But it doesn't have a screen which means downloading them to a pc.
u/Gaffers_Tape · 2 pointsr/videoproduction

The best you're going to do at $500 (but still see significantly improved picture quality) is probably a $200-ish consumer grade camera and the rest on a capture device. for HDMI to USB3, I've used this one many times and it works well:

https://www.amazon.com/Magewell-XI100DUSB-Video-Capture-Dongle/dp/B00I16VQOY

But that doesn't leave much room to play for a camera and stay around $500. For consumer cameras I like the picture quality of the Canon Vixia line, but Sony, Panasonic, etc. have similar consumer cameras at similar prices. Here's one that fits the budget:

https://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-R700-Camcorder-Black/dp/B019UDIL80/

This one even has a mic jack, which is a nice plus.

You might be able to save even more on the capture device by getting something like one of the Blackmagic decklink capture cards, if you have a desktop to put it in. Still, you're only going to save $15-$25 or so.

If you can put your budget into the $1,500-$2,000 then you could move up to a true prosumer camera or even a professional camera if you buy used. A used Panasonic HMC-150 should be going for about $1-$1.5k on ebay. You'd really see a jump up to pro looking video at that point.

u/lessthanjake · 7 pointsr/TeenMFA

Should probably go in cop or not but I don't wanna wait.

Should I get an SJ4000? It's a GoPro knockoff that's supposedly really great quality for the price. I can get the camera, case, helmet mount, two extra rechargeable batteries, and a 32 gb memory card for ~$130.

I mainly want this for cycling, as I've heard so many horror stories of cyclists being hit or any sort of stuff and only winning cases because they had footage of the act. Plus, I lead a relatively active lifestyle between rock climbing, cycling, swimming, soccer, frisbee, etc. I plan to do even more of this at college, too, so I feel like this would just be nice to have.

But then again, I am about to go into college so I really need to save my money. Or should I buy it for myself as a graduation present. Idk. Fuck me someone help me please

u/squarebore · 1 pointr/riddeit

I don't have a cam for my bike yet. I don't commute, but still run into lots of situations during recreational riding that I wouldn't mind having video of either just for fun, to show friends some of the beautiful trails we have, or in case I ever need it as evidence. I do have a dashcam in my car and like it. For the bike I'm leaning more towards something like the Contour Roam 2 or even the Mobius because the GoPro seems like it'd be big and clunky (and probably expensive) for mounting to my bike or helmet.

I've never cared for "the best" terms, I'm more into what fits for you and your budget. I got a dashcam and it lasted all but two years, the battery inside "popped" which caused the screen to go all blue. Not sure if the Texas heat or age got to it, my truck is parked in a carport and only gets mild evening sun.

So I bought this one from in 2016 for my front dash Amazon so far it does the job. If you hardwire it in make sure it has constant power even when the ignition is off since it is all capacitor the date and time will reset after so many hours without power.

This one is my rear camera, I got it free with gift cards when it was $25 and it has muted colors, trees are brownish, but it is okay for a rear dash.

The next upgrade I'd like is the YI dash cam

The top-priced BlackVue dash cams and battery packs along with Go Pro 6 not sure I'd leave these displayed in my vehicle, but if you want to spend that kind of money those are top priced.

Look into getting 32 or 64GB sd card and a mount for the mirror, the Texas heat on sticker types or suction will take a toll, mine are suction based and fall off randomly.

You'll find tons of "best of" videos and really will come away more confused. They all do the same basic operations, some link with your phone which is good for showing police or insurance, some track your speed and GPS, so those extras come with a price.

Pro tip: If you're ever involved in an accident or witness to one with a dashcam, do not ever mention you have a dashcam, get the information needed and let the video speak for you to police or the insurance company only.

u/djrbx · 1 pointr/gopro

Does it have to be a GoPro? If you're limited in budget, the YI Action Camera is a great alternative. I have the GoPro Hero 4 Silver and my roommate has the Yi, you can barely notice the difference between each camera. The GoPro does offer better features but overall, the Yi comes close. You can also use the Yi footage in GoPro Studio if you need it.

You would have to buy a waterproof case for the Yi since it doesn't come with one out of the box but those can be bought for about $15 on amazon. I would also recommend getting spare batteries as well. You can get a whole Yi setup for about $140 or less compared to a GoPro Hero 4 Silver costing at around $340 right now on amazon.

Here's a good review on the Yi

u/mikarm · 3 pointsr/JusticePorn

Search for "HD Car DVR 2.5 TFT LCD 270° 6 IR LED" on ebay, you can grab one for $20. Mine shipped from hong kong. It is cheaply made and has some rattles sometimes, but that is only on the video itself. It works very well and takes some pretty clear video for the price. You can set it to record until out of space or set it to record in 5 or 10 minute intervals and it will delete old footage as it runs out of space. I put an 8gb sdcard in mine and it lasts a long time.

Here is how it looks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuvGjOMmxSo which imo is pretty damn good for $20.

Looks like the same one is posted below from Amazon as well by TwistedMexi. http://www.amazon.com/2-5-inch-Vehicle-Recorder-Dashboard-Camcorder/dp/B0053DDNW6/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1376583384&sr=1-1&keywords=dash+cam

u/RubberReptile · 3 pointsr/ProductTesting

Hmmm... it would be nice to know how much $ you're spending on each cam.

TBH, all of them are pretty bad deals on AMZRT... usually you can get the same cam from a different seller for less. if you're gonna spend $80 just buy this cam: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CKTTNYM/ it's the least expensive with real stabilization and the stabilizer is AMAZING.

Cheapest cam on Amazon I can recommend this one has very good video but photos are only OK

To be honest, I would just spend the little extra on the SooCoo (first link) you'll have a much better cam experience than with any of the ones you linked.

If you want I can go take a test video with the soocoo and throw it up on Dropbox tonight, I just got the cam yesterday myself. :)

I currently use my S6 for all the vlogs I record since that's the only really decent camera I have. It's funny you asked this question because I'm looking for another camera around this price point.

If you bump your budget up like $10 you could get into decent cameras to start off.

The GoPro hero retails at $129.99 on Amazon, but you could maybe find it cheaper used on eBay or something. It'll shoot 1080 at 30fps and 60fps at 720. Only thing is that it doesn't have a lcd screen so you won't be able to preview any footage. This was my first choice since I was looking for an action cam. The wifi one is like $199 and will allow you to preview footage on your phone, but for that price you could get something else like the GoPro session that shoots 4k and is smaller.

The Nikon CoolPix L340 is like $130-ish on Amazon (probably cheaper somewhere else) . It has a fixed lense and shoot only 720p video. I'm assuming probably just 30fps.

There are also some Samsung point and shoots around this price and lower, but the out of the box sound quality is probably terrible. I'd go with with either the GoPro or the CoolPix to start. You could also jump up into the $199 range which starts to offer very good quality. OR....you could also buy one of those handy cams too lol. I have one and it shoots decent video (1080/720 w/ 24-60 fps), but I feel stupid using it outside the house. Hope this helps a little bit! Good luck in your vlogging ☺.

u/EdwadThatone · 2 pointsr/cycling

If you can go ~$150 then I’d definitely recommend the GoPro Session. It’s simple to use, just push a button and it turns on and starts recording. Push it again and it stops recording and turns off. It’s compact, and won’t stick our like a sore thumb when on your head. It’s completely water proof without a housing. (Well, not water proof, but water resistant, but you can take it to the beach and it’ll be fine) You can get a new one on Amazon for $150 or if you shop around on eBay you can a used one for cheaper. Example. Once you buy that you’ll need an SD card, and a mount. Now, if you have a vented helmet and don’t mind some more added bulk, you could use this mount. It’s from GoPro, so it’ll be a bit more compared to off brand options but it will most likely last longer too. Or you could get the adhesive route and get something like this. Personally, I’d recommend the adhesive, but it’s really up to you. If you have any questions just ask. Good luck and be safe!

u/wolfcry0 · 2 pointsr/AskPhotography

In that case just your basic 1080p camcorder like this one would be a good option, they don't have particularly crisp video but would be better than the iPhone 5 and easier to manage. More light always helps of course, a nice brightly lit room makes it have a lot less noise.

u/dnask8 · 1 pointr/LosAngeles

This is the cam, the reviews weren't great and I took a gamble but I am happy with it. Came with a mini usb cable, a car charger cable and the whole window mount. Totally worth the dough:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053DDNW6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is the card. I got a class 10 so the write speed would for sure be capable of the 1080p.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7ID99I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I tried to run the cam at 720 but it looked fuzzy so I bumped it up to 1080p. I have it set to do 5 minute segments the whole time and each file is usually right around 1GB each. When plugged into a cig lighter that only has power when the car is on the cam starts itself and starts recording when it gets power and goes until you shut it off/loses power. I just set it and forget style on my window and pull the card when I see something interesting along the drive to save. It just overwrites the oldest files if you don't do anything with them.

u/NotTheRightAnswer · 2 pointsr/gadgets

Xiaomi Yi 4k You have to buy the waterproof case separately for another $30, but it's a great product. The camera, the waterproof case, and a kit of generic attachments/peripherals and you're set. All for around $300.

If you want something cheaper, the regular Xiaomi Yi is only $100 and still works great. I gave this to my 10-year old son last year for Christmas and it's held up great.

u/kyzen · 1 pointr/Multicopter

Not really doable at $300, but I can get you close.

Quadcopter

  • Cheerson CX-20/Quanum Nova - $255 - $300 (needs battery) - or ~$330 on ebay shipped from the US

  • Blade 350 QX3 RTF - $414 @ Horizon Hobby w/ coupon code XTRA10

  • Walkera QR X350 - $300

  • DIY - $70 Turnigy 9X + ~$150 F450 clone kit + ~$30 charger + ~$20 battery + $20 mount for camera (+$~75 APM if you want GPS) = ~$290-$365, plus any tools/assembly supplies you don't have on hand.

    Camera

  • SJ4000 - $65

  • Mobius - $80

  • GoPro Hero - $130

All prices are from a search I put near-zero effort into; you may be able to shave off a few bucks if you do some digging.

The Blade is the best of the 3 prebuilt quadcopters listed, the other 2 are a bit of a toss-up. DIY could net the highest quality, depends on your skills and how much effort you want to put in.

EDIT: Also worth noting that "good camera" and "FPV" sometimes don't mesh well. Stereotypically, FPVers fly fast and crash hard, while folks with "good cameras" on their quadcopters are flying slow, dangling the camera on a stabilized platform, taking pictures or video. You certainly can fly those camera rigs FPV, but it won't be the same sort of experience as FPV on a 250mm racer.
u/wwpieeater · 1 pointr/Niskayuna

They're becoming less and less expensive. You can grab one of the drones for $350 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00AGOSQI8/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all (the ones from Amazon Warehouse Deals are just a bit banged up on the outside)) and the new GoPro Hero is $130 (http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHA-301-HERO/dp/B00NIYNUXO/). If you're looking to go more high end, look into FPV streaming, the DJI Phantom 2, the Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal and the GoPro Hero 4 Black. DJI even has a professional line that can carry DSLRs. It's definitely fun, but it's also really worrying, knowing that every time I launch I'm putting $1k+ in the air with huge potential for property damage. I've had some awkward conversations with neighbors. At the end of production for that video, I couldn't see the drone because it was so high up. We found it four days later about half a mile away. Right at the end was when the radio cut out. Try it out, but keep in mind that we live pretty close to some airports. The FAA says that all aircraft like this drone must be three miles away from any airports and must stay below 300 feet (one football field). I'd love to see what you get if you try it out. It'd also be a great father son activity as there's lots of maintenance, studying and practicing involved. Overall... GO FOR IT!

u/LtRoyalShrimp · 1 pointr/Twitch

Hi,

I highly recommend the Vixia HF R800 if you are just getting into using an actual camera over a webcam.

If you want to go for something a lot better, and also more expensive, check out the Sony AX33

Both cameras feature "Clean HDMI out" meaning you can turn off all the OSD(On screen display features like recording time, date, etc).

If you have questions about either I'd be happy to answer as best I can.

u/klaqua · 2 pointsr/videography

I don't think it will matter much which you use. I go with the one in the hand that feels better to you. Magic Lantern is available and quite mature on both cams.

I use the Manfroto 560B-1 and are happy with the extra hight I can use.

Little side note. Consider to use a action cam like the xiaomi or a borrowed GoPro as a second angle B-Roll. Has saved me on occasion and is either cheap or free if you can borrow one.

Last but not least watch some of this guys videos. He has lots of good tips, but don't go to crazy. Your job is to have the moments as good as possible without being in the shoot or even be visible if at all possible!

u/bstrange · 1 pointr/photography

While everyone suggests a 35 or 50mm f/1.8 lens, let me suggest a flash that isn't on top of your camera. I'd get at least the 430EX flash (http://amzn.com/B001CCAISE) so you can swivel and tilt the head of it. Pair that up with a good diffuser (http://amzn.com/B000CLNHXY) and you can take some great portraits. Flashes are great to have even in bright sunlight to soften shadows and add catch-lights to eyes, and are invaluable in other types of photography and situations.

Also, a RapidStrap is nice to have (http://amzn.com/B002WR7VSS), as it will get your camera off your neck and onto your shoulder. It's a hell of a lot more comfortable to carry it around during hikes like this.

I thought i'd share what I just came up with.

I am moving to Germany at the end of the month for about two years, and I will be doing a LOT of traveling during this time. To preserve memories and share my experiences I decided to upgrade and change around my camera bag. I sold my d3300 and lenses and wanted a setup for something portable and not cumbersome that I can take in any situation without being annoying.

UPDATE: (no video until I've worked this out)

GO BUY A DASH CAM. THIS IS THE ONE I HAVE AND ITS $21. Just needs an SD card. And an optional better mount. Mine is mounted behind my rearview mirror so you don't notice it and its hardwired in the same spot as my V1 so it automatically turns on with the car and starts recording.

UPDATE (cont.):

I seriously had to take a few hours to cool off and enjoy my vacation. Unfortunately I got back to the hotel after the managers had left.

Just spoke with the front desk manager who runs the show at night while the actual hotel managers are on during the day. He was super professional about it. Albeit, he's completely powerless in the situation but he took control, called everyone and setup a meeting for tomorrow morning.

Notes:

  • He was completely shocked by the video.
  • I had to tell the valet how to drive the SMG tranny is on tape.
  • When another gentlemen comes up to the car and asks if its his, he responds with a laugh and says "Nope, but its mine for now!"
  • He peels out of the hotel.
  • The car goes airborne twice. Once entering the garage. And again as he goes down a slope and launches off a ramp that meets a right turn entrance a parking level.
  • The wheels are burning at least 3-4 times.
  • The valet laughs at the end to cap it off.

    New things:

  • The valet turned out to be the supervisor.
  • The valet is outsourced by the hotel and carries its own insurance.
  • The other valets all knew about my car.
  • The ramp he flew off, leads to another garage that I was able to park in tonight with another valet. Meaning that, he intentionally launched it off there instead of slowing down.

    Possible Solutions Discussed:

  • Hotel
  • Valet
  • Food/Beverage
  • BMW Inspection
  • Repairs
  • Future Stays

The conversation went really well but again he's not the person in charge. Anyone capable of doing anything knows about it and will have a night to figure out how to appropriately respond.

Sorry guys, no video yet until I have an answer. Another update will come tomorrow morning.
