You might try the Imperial Mexica books by Thomas Harlan.

Aztec civilization conquered Earth, subjugated all the other civilizations but gave Japan a special place as "first among the lesser people", and went on to space. Very much aristocratic.

There's a debut novel out called Roboteer out that is, by your definitions, very hard sci-fi. 0% space opera. Full disclosure: I know the author and read some early drafts. But it's getting good reviews, too.

Thank you. You can find The Alien Skill Series on Amazon. The first book is called « Ben Archer and the Cosmic Fall ». The Alien Skill Series

The audio book version of my novel has done so well that Audible decided to make physical copies, CDs, to be sold in stores.

My son is 12 and he's been shown flat earth clips. I showed him my copies of The Smoking God and The Missing Diary of Admiral Byrd and he threw out his Flat Earth booklets. Discs are for playing with Frisbees, the Earth is hollow.

Possibly Blind Lake by Robert Charles Wilson.

Yikes! I hate it when Amazon doesn't cooperate! Here's a link. It's out of print, but I see they have used copies for sale.

Just some random examples from google search that took 10 seconds show that it is used.

The fact that you find it painful to read has to do with your cultural views and education and it has nothing to do with whether the phrase is commonly used in informal context or not. I don't like the word "moist" and I find it "painful to read" but that doesn't mean its not valid.

u/aethelberga · 6 pointsr/printSF

Rollback, by Rob Sawyer. Also Mindscan by him.

u/jeffala · 10 pointsr/HPfanfiction

The only book that the evil Dursleys ever let Harry read is The Complete Ferengi Rules Of Acquisition: Aphorisms, guidelines, and principles to life in Ferengi Culture.

Take a minute to look through them and imagine how Harry's adherence to the Rules would change canon, especially Numbers 6, 17, 21, 74, 168, 190, 208, & 285.

[heres one] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ABAXFCY/?tag=kbsig-20#nav-subnav)

[and another] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YNZC0I/ref=s9_acsd_al_bw_c_x_3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=YSW5VZ563ZBGGZQEX76F&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=2612251942&pf_rd_i=7078878011#nav-subnav)

[and a really bad one] (https://www.amazon.com/Zombies-versus-Aliens-Vampires-Dinosaurs-ebook/dp/B018XQAA98/ref=sr_1_55?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1473779767&sr=1-55#nav-subnav)

all those books have a lot of reviews so are clearly being read.

And if those aren't bad...then it's like I was saying... are we talking a kid drawing the cover in crayons to qualify as bad?

I'm not disagree that covers matter, I stated that up front. Just that they do not matter as much as everyone likes to think. I repeat though, they do matter... and one should care.

The books I listed above would probably have sold even more copies with better covers... but even with their bad covers they still managed to get a reader base going.
