Wow, you sound like my twin down to height/weight/age. I was just researching glucose meters (even though I've been tested several times and don't have diabetes), just so I could test myself and make sure I don't get too low of blood sugar. I've also always been a really picky eater (almost no veggies, no seafood), and I don't cook or exercise. Real healthy :)

I've been dealing with the hungry-til-I-wanna-cry for years-- thankfully I had a patient ex bf who'd help me get food. Now that I live alone and am on a cocktail of migraine/adhd meds (trokendi, wellbutrin, adderall...) that make me feel dizzy/nauseous to the point of almost fainting, the problem is getting worse. I've definitely run to dry heave over the toilet after climbing the two flights of stairs to my apartment.

I don't have any miracle answers, but here's what kind of works for me-- carry food and a liter-size bottle of water everywhere. These end up not being the healthiest things because it has to be portable, non-perishable, and picky-friendly... but I do what I can.

Here's what I carry:

  • Squeezy applesauce This is about as easy as it gets to inject calories into my body, short of an IV.
  • Stretch Island fruit leather-- Grape is the best flavor, followed by raspberry and strawberry.
  • Mini clif bars -- I got sick of these so I don't eat them anymore. I also feel like they require some effort (chewing?) if that makes sense-- not as easy to eat when you're in the desperate, crying on the floor phase of hunger.
  • Chewy bars -- these are handy for purse and taste good.
  • Fiber 1 bars

Note: Several of the above items are way cheaper at Costco than Amazon or grocery stores -- the fruit leather, chewy bars, and applesauce in particular. Keep several snacks in your purse and car at all times. I always have 2-3 fruit leathers in my purse along with a chewy bar or two.

    Easy snacks for at home:
  • Small boxes of raisins -- these don't last as long as plastic-sealed options, but they do the trick.
  • Drink a glass of milk-- ~8g of protein!
  • Sugary juice (think POG, OJ, 100% real apple cider--yum!)
  • Lots of fruit-- I buy fresh fruit every 3-4 days. Wash & cut right away so it's ready to eat-- I go with grapes, cherries, any kind of berry, and bananas. Apples, oranges etc are too much effort when I'm hangry :)
  • Greek yogurt with high protein-- I buy Dannon Light & Fit Greek because it has relatively high protein/low sugar compared to the fancier stuff I used to eat (Fage, Noosa, Siggis)

The key IMHO is to stock up on lots of non-perishable options so that a) you don't run out and b) you don't have to decide what to eat when you get desperately hungry.

Note: I used to eat a lot of fruit snacks (ranging from gushers & fruit rollups to Welches), but I advise against these. They're also easy to carry/eat, but they're so sugary, I found they made ADHD symptoms way worse.

Hope this helps & good luck!

I know exactly the brand you're talking about on the sweet potato kale thing. And the image on the pouch is of course sweet potatoes and kale too! False advertising, pissed me right off.

In addition to the sweetness acting as a preservative as others have mentioned, apple puree is also a cheap filler. Compare what you paid for your last squeeze pouch or tiny puree cup to a giant jar of applesauce and voilà.

On Amazon at this very moment, I'm finding pouches for about $0.34/oz and puree cups for $0.14-30/oz, while a big ol' jar of applesauce is $0.09/oz.

Eventually we just started throwing stuff in a blender of our own. The markup on these things is truly bonkers.

Before a big ride, the group I go with usually goes out for breakfast - huevos rancheros, or a big breakfast burrito.

I've started taking the sqeezable applesauce and pudding packs for kids (eg). They are 60-100 calories, easy to eat and taste good.

After, beer and pizza.

Shout out to GoGo Squeez Applesauce, as it has been a lifesaver for me for years! I get some "Isn't that for toddlers?" from friends and family, but I really couldn't get by without it. GoGo Squeez on Amazon

Hmm yeah, never tried those ones! Not sure where you're from, but we have Harris Teeter's (supermarket where I live) here and they have their own in house organic brand that we typically get. If we can't get those, we usually go with the Mott's Unsweetened ones like these.

I use this: GoGo Squeeze, but I clip the wings off of the cap first.

You don't need Amazon Fresh to order food on Amazon. And really, she shouldn't be stocking up on too many fresh things that might need cooking. She could have stocked up on:

Peanut Butter

Bread

Chips

Fruit Cups

Juice

And that's just a small selection. And yeah some of the prices are above what they normally are, but that's the premium she should pay since she had the means to do it the normal way before she got into trouble.
