Top Reddit comments about Automotive Vinyl Wraps & Accessories:

A revamp of a detailed accessories listing that I posted a few days ago:

Interior Essentials:

  1. Matte Screen Protector. When the sun is setting behind you as you drive, you will be blinded by reflections off the fingerprints and oil on your screen. A matte screen protector will prevent fingerprints and smudges from forming, while also diffusing reflected sunlight so it's not nearly as blinding. I got the Abstract Ocean one, but there are lots of good options.
  2. All-weather Floor Mats. The mats that come with the Model 3 are not good. I personally got the MaxPider 3D mats to replace them.
  3. Center Console Wrap: The piano-black center console is coated with a plastic that picks up fingerprints and scratches extremely easily, so you'll definitely want to install a vinyl wrap over top of it. I got one from Kenriko, and I'm very happy with it.
  4. 64GB+ USB thumb drive. Format it with the FAT32 file system, and put a folder at the root of the drive called "TeslaCam", then plug it into one of the two USB ports beneath the center display, under the phone dock. This will activate the built-in dashcam on your Model 3, and it will record everything that the front camera and two side cameras see in a 1-hour loop. You can then press the camera icon in the top right of the screen to permanently save the last ten minutes of recordings, in case you get into an accident, or see something else you want to keep. If you're a little more tech savvy, check out TeslaUSB, a Raspberry Pi-based storage system that will automatically copy dashcam and sentry clips to your computer at home.
  5. Ultra-bright trunk LEDs. The OEM LEDs that illuminate the trunk are pathetic. Get the Abstract Ocean ones for 16x more brightness, so you can actually see the contents of your trunk at night. You need two.

    Interior Optional:

  6. Interior door handle wrap. The Model 3's emergency door release handle is extremely easy for passengers to accidentally use to open the front doors. This is no longer as big of a deal as it once was (pulling it used to sometimes break your window, until a software update fixed it), but getting a wrap for at least the front doors is quite handy, as it'll cover up the emergency release handle, obscuring its purpose. The wrap is perforated, though, so you can still pull the handle in case of a real emergency. I got mine from RPMTesla.
  7. Dash wrap. If you got the black interior but you don't like the wood panel on the dash, wrapping it works great. I used this one from Abstract Ocean.
  8. Puddle Light Projectors. These things are cool, but a little pricey (~$45 for a pair). They replace the puddle lights, which shine down from the bottom of each door, with an ultra-bright LED that shines a Tesla-related logo onto the ground. I got the ones that shine the "Tesla T", but you can get all kinds of other ones. And I'd highly recommend getting the Abstract Ocean ones, as the other manufacturers that you can get these from for cheaper make them out of crap.
  9. The Ultimate Reflector. A windshield shade custom-built for the Model 3. It works great for keeping the sun off your interior while the car is parked outside all day when you're at work. Long term sun exposure will damage your seats and possibly overheat your center screen.
  10. "Door Open" Decals. If you find your passengers consistently forget how to open the door from the inside (like my mom...), these decals are awesome. Super cheap, but very effective.
  11. Aluminum "Performance" Pedals. There are replacement covers for your pedals that make them look like the Performance edition's pedals. IMO they're much snazzier than the default ones, and since the accelerator one is also a little larger and grippier than the default, it makes it easier to keep your foot planted on it without it sliding off. Be sure to get the ones that match your Tesla, though. The Model S/X ones are slightly too large for the Model 3.

    Exterior:

  12. Stronger Frunk Struts. The i1Tesla channel introduced the world to using stronger struts in the frunk to make it pop all the way open when you open it, rather than simply unlatching and sitting there, mostly closed. Get the ones from the link in the video description, rather than the ones that specifically advertise themselves as Model 3 frunk struts, though. Those guys just sell you the exact same piece of equipment for a massive markup compared to buying the originals off Amazon. i1Tesla also came up with a solution for the rear trunk, but I personally don't use it.
  13. Paint Protection Film (PPF): Tesla makes their cars in California, which has much stricter air quality laws than any other place in the world where cars get made. Thus, they need to use a slightly different paint formulation than other manufacturers, and this does lead to "softer" paint. If you want to protect your paint from rocks flying up from cars in front of you and taking chips out of it, Paint Protection Film is the only option. It's pricey, but some people find it worthwhile. You don't really need to get any more done than what installers generally call the "front package", which is the front bumper, hood, and side panels back to the forward doors (some will add the rocker panels below the doors, too). That personally cost me $1700 to have done in LA, using XPel PPF. The costs will be different depending on where you live and which brand and type of PPF you get.
  14. Ceramic Coat: If you want your car to be easier to hand-wash yourself, a ceramic coat can help. It's like painting a very thin layer of glass right on top of your paint, and it adds both a very high shine, and a hydophobic layer to your paint, which makes water run right off the surface.

If you plan to wash your car yourself, this video goes into good detail on how to go about it, including which washing products to buy.

    Apps:

If you're OK with using your Tesla account credentials in a third-party app (they don't ever upload said credentials anywhere, they just use them locally to generate a Tesla API token), you can do all kinds of extra stuff that the base Tesla app doesn't support. Like Siri Shortcuts that activate Summon, or automatic Sentry Mode when parked at any location that you haven't marked as "safe", or all kinds of additional statistics tracking. The two apps I've used are "Remote S" and "Stats: for Tesla model S/X/3". Those are for iOS, but I'm sure they, or something similar, are also available for Android.

There's also TeslaFi.com, which is a website that works much like the phone apps I just mentioned, but does all KINDS of extra stuff. One of my favorite features is that I've got it set up to send me a text right before I got to bed if my car is at home, but unplugged. And it can do sooo much more than that. It does cost $5/mo, though you can get a free month-long trial if you use any existing user's TeslaFi referral code.

I apologize in advance for this long post. None of these are "must gets", but they are what I got for my 2016 Premium forester. I'm posting this for my own future reference as well as to help some people who are wondering what accessories might be good for their new forester. I highly recommend ordering from Jackie from Annapolis Subaru @ 443-837-1422 as she can get you some good prices on the subaru accessories as well as WeatherTech products! I saved on WeatherTech shipping costs (~$20) by ordering through Jackie and the warranty is the same as if I had bought them through their website.

Please note that some of these accessory links are for my specific car year, model and configuration. I have a 2016 Premium forester without eyesight (affects the Covercraft/heatshield sunshade - they also have eyesight compatible sunshades!).

Also, I personally didn't get my windows tinted, but I think that is something that you should seriously consider doing :)

When installing the acrylic sheet, you could use some long standoff screws to make it stand clear of that stuff (would leave a nice gap for the fans as well).

As far as hiding the cables, would be a lot easier to move the drives like mousse_au_chocolat mentioned first, then you could cover it with just about anything. Find a piece of plastic or sheet metal (if you have an old case laying around you could harvest from that), cut to size, paint black if needed, and screw/rivet into place. Then you could use shorter standoffs (which I would recommend as opposed to mounting it flat, face to face). If you're going to cut holes for the fans, mounting flat would be fine. But you would also be wise to get some kind of screen or dust filter to put over the fans.

Grills are another (mostly cosmetic) option: https://mnpctech.com/pc-computer-cooling-fans-grills-custom/

Modder's Mesh: https://mnpctech.com/?subcats=Y&pcode_from_q=Y&pshort=Y&pfull=Y&pname=Y&pkeywords=Y&search_performed=Y&q=mesh&dispatch=products.search

If you can't move the drives, your only other option really is to make your own enclosure, or find something that happens to fit and figure out a way to secure it. Use your imagination! That's what modding is all about, finding creative solutions for your individual needs, (and adding some style ofc).

Example: you could also take that idea a little further: cut a few more strips of plastic/alum. to cover the spaces around the fans and make a clean, flat surface. Then cover the flat surface with some carbon fiber looking vinyl wrap (or some other texture effect), and maybe still put an acrylic panel over that as well. Kind of like this guy: https://imgur.com/a/DxpTtMd

I actually have some vinyl that was just delivered at my Amazon locker while typing this, on my way out the door right now. I have a white theme with my case + peripherals so I got a few to try out and return if I don't like something. Finally can make my monitors, speakers, etc. go along with the theme:

Don't know why it got removed. This was original text.

" I didn't think the smudgy chrome bothered me until I got the wraps. These things look sharp. The guy who makes them is on here somewhere and there's probably some rule against promoting your own stuff but it's not my company, I just have them on my car and think they look awesome. I love that my stock black is now just a little different than other 3s. They are super worth $20 and took no time to install. Been about a month, still look and feel perfect. I have no bad things to say about this product. Check out the pics on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GNY1VRR "

I ordered a sheet of vinyl from an amazon seller and had great success wrapping my front console, it was really easy and saved some $ and left me w/ tons of extra material. Here’s the material and I would be happy to talk you through the process if you deicide to go that route https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJJ7NC2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_e3a4Db3M1QSEV

I did just order their precut pieces for the door window knobs and controls.

u/uoswekke · 2 pointsr/TeslaModel3

Definitely wrap the center console (I know many people love the kenriko wrap but I’ve had great success with the kit from evwraps.com) and all weather mats (I like them much more than the carpet mats).

Yeah basically! And a heat gun. I'll explain that later. Essentially you're making a custom pickguard out of 1/8" plywood and wrapping it in 3M Carbon Fiber Vinyl to get the look without the cost.

Step 1: Make a paper/cardstock template for the pickguard that is custom fit to your guitar build. Mine is an explorer style obviously, so I started with an Epiphone explorer template from the internet, and modified it until I had the shape I wanted.

Step 2: Pick up sheets of 1/8" birch plywood from a craft store/store of your choosing. You can get 1ftx2ft sheets for only $5 each at a store like Hobby Lobby (where I got mine). For a pickguard, you'll most likely only need one sheet. I got two sheets and was able to make two pickguards using only 1/2 of the first sheet. (Only using about 1.50$ worth of wood per pickguard)

Step 3: Trace the template onto your plywood as best you can. Then cut the shape out with either a jigsaw or a scroll saw (Probably easier if you have one, this is what I used). Sand it to make sure your edges are smooth. I used 220 and 320 grit sandpapers to smooth the edges to really get the "Factory made" look.

Step 4: Now for the carbon fiber part. Order a roll of 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl from Amazon. I got a 2 square foot roll for only 13 dollars. I got the high gloss and I really like the look. Can't vouch for the other colors. Here's a link:https://www.amazon.com/3M-CA-1170-GLOSS-BLACK-CARBON/dp/B006FP2CRS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539580186&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=3m+carbon+fiber+vinyl+ca1170+1ftx2ft&dpPl=1&dpID=5160Ue5zBEL&ref=plSrch

Place your plywood pickguard on the back of the vinyl (not the textured carbon fiber side, the back side). IMPORTANT: Make sure the side of the pickguard that you want to be covered in the vinyl at the end is face down on the material. If you mess this up and cut your pattern with the wrong side down, the pattern will be backwards (did this for my first pickguard on accident)

Trace the shape onto the vinyl but make sure you leave about a half inch on all sides to allow yourself to fully wrap the pickguard. Cut the shape out of the vinyl with scissors.

Step 5: Pull off the sticker part on the back of the vinyl shape you cut out, and stick your plywood guard in the center so that there is the half inch of extra material on all sides. Then use the heat gun to wrap the vinyl around all sides of the pickguard and an old credit card as a squeegee to get out air bubbles. There are plenty of youtube videos to help you out with this part and it takes a little bit of practice, but the material is very pliable once you apply the heat. The heatgun is a must but they're not too expensive. I have a $20 one by Wagner.

And there you have it! The vinyl is tough enough not to scratch unless you really try and dig it with your pick, you can drag your pick over it with no scratches. People wrap their cars in the stuff so its meant to be pretty tough.

So the total cost is ~$20 (rounded up) for all the materials, but its enough material to easily make 3 pickguards depending on the style!

Wrote this all on mobile so I hope it makes sense, I'm going to bed now but if you have questions feel free to ask! I'll answer them as soon as I can.

u/TheMiracleWhip · 1 pointr/TeslaModel3

You bet. For center cap removal on the Performance version, bolt removal is not required and there's a few different methods to get the cap off, typically involving a suction cup or small "hook" tool, but seeing as I didn't have either of those I used a wine key, and *carefully* twisted the corkscrew into the cap and simply pulled it straight out. After plasti-dip was complete and dry I just snapped these right back on.

This video shows a few methods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL--sR3GMyQ

Note* do NOT try the third method which is prying from the edges. The cap is delicate and this could snap it.

If you don't have the performance model this video shows how to get the aero cover off and replace the center cap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZV3WpPfaio

If you're looking for a "T" logo you can get these on amazon:

u/shifty_badger · 15 pointsr/GolfGTI

Yup! Just takes some vinyl that you can get off Amazon (or sometimes cheaper if you have a local source) and a little bit of elbow grease and determination to install!

To learn I just watched a ton of YouTube videos, I found anything with Justin Pate or The Wrap Institute were always helpful and showed different techniques.

The biggest thing is just patience and just keep trying! You're going to mess up a decent amount of vinyl getting the hang of it, but it's quick to pick up and pretty fun!

I've done a chrome delete. I used this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0728N99B5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9SiYBb99S0E9S

It took about 2 hours or so to do it myself. Wasn't that hard, but I did make some mistakes and I plan to redo some of it. Definitely buy the bigger roll as I only had about 2ft left after I was done.

Basically all you have to do is cut a strip the length of the piece you're going to do. Then start on one end and peel the backing off a bit and just push it down and work your way around. If you get air bubbles or mess it up it's easy to pull it off and redo it without ruining it. Take a knife and cut the excess off the sides. Go slowly, it can be tedious. Make sure to wash all of the pieces you're going to do very well before hand so the vinyl sticks nicely.

I've had it on for about 4 months now and it doesn't show any signs of wear or coming off

u/r12ski · 3 pointsr/centuryhomes

Thanks. It’s one of those things that people don’t tell you, but it can add years to the life of the putty. My boss likes to say “think like water.”

I should probably clarify that I’m only talking about 1/16 of an inch or so. It will take a little practice to match both sides. I second scoring the paint first. You can get cheap razor blade holders, but I really like this kind.

Oh, and Winding Road Magazine did this to a Corvette as a trolling job. Good inspiration for red herrings--some vinyl, cardboard, styrofoam, or scrap material could totally do the job: https://www.germancarforum.com/threads/winding-road-fakes-corvette-ss-pics.8389/

Also you get a huge roll for $10 while a single skin from Dbrand can cost that or more. If your willing to take the time and effort it's definitely worth it, I did it on my S9+ too!

u/fraudisokay · 1 pointr/subaru

It's actually really simple! If you get the 3M vinyl wrapping kit it comes with a nice scalpel-like razor blade pen to trim excess. Clean the surface with alcohol, stick it on, press it down, gets the bubbles out, trim, and you're done. It's extremely easy to work with and can be peeled up and stuck back down many times.

Here is the wrap I buy whenever I am wrapping trim. I used plasti-dip for years, but finally started wrapping things instead, and I won't ever go back to plasti-dip.

And thanks!

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

You could try automotive vinyl. You can get rolls off amazon. 3M makes a matte black one, looks exactly like the top lid on my T450s.

You could also flock it but that's a slightly more permanent solution, and you'd have to make sure that the powder doesn't go where it shouldn't.

u/tallwhitekid · 2 pointsr/fatbike

Here is an example of what I used. Most sheets come in 5' long rolls, so you will have to cut two strips and tape them together, placing the joining section between cutouts. Surly rims have a wide section where the stem hole is and directly across from that where I placed mine. Also, I recommend leaving the backing on the vinyl because they are tough to work with if the sticky side is exposed. Good luck!

u/hepatitisC · 2 pointsr/wyzecam

You can use something like this to cover the camera in a black film without painting it. You could paint it but you would have to be meticulous about taping off any of the internal components, as others have indicated. I think the vinyl would be much easier

u/twistedsymphony · 1 pointr/cade

I had ordered it from an online store called Auto Vinyl Solutions but it looks like they're no longer around. it looks like Amazon sells it though.

u/Shemyaza5 · 7 pointsr/XVcrosstrek

I don’t think anything can fix that... might be best to buy a sheet of matte black vinyl wrap (the kind used by people on their car exterior) trim it to the same size as the damaged panel.
Something like this Black Matte 60" x 1ft Car Wrap Vinyl Roll with Air Release 3MIL-VViViD8 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L9JAS80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1EOkDb27X1WHN
There are even pictures from people who’ve used it on their interior in the reviews.

u/Crimson-Pig · 2 pointsr/crv

The door pillar trim on this gen of CRV tends to degrade after a few years. I've seen this happen on almost all Gen 3 CRVs on the road, mine included.

What I've done to mine was sand it down until the surface coating was completely off, and then I applied 3M Carbon fiber decorative wrap all around it. It's been going strong for 4+ years now.

Alternatively, eBay, Amazon and other online stores will sell you plastic/metal "pillar trims" specific to your vehicle. Make sure you look for the ones with all the pieces (there's a small rectangular piece for the rear windows that's often missed).

If you look at some of the pictures of the side, you can zoom in on my pillars and see how they look with the 3M wrap.

I had a similar scratch from the previous owner, and opted to go this route. I used 3M Scotchprint on the console and the head unit trim, and it came out absolutely awesome.. but then again, i couldn't stand the silver even without the scratch. Crappy night picture for reference http://imgur.com/KzVsu3v . If you decide to do this, make sure you get the 60x24 wrap to get full coverage on the front most part of the console.

Here's a write up for another phone, same basic principles apply. Here are some pics of the final product (sorry it's blurry, all I have is my iPod.)

Basic step by step: remove battery cover, cut a sheet of wrap about 1/2" larger on each side. Wipe battery cover with lens cleaning cloth or microfiber cloth, clean with rubbing alcohol, dry. The easiest way to apply it is probably to put the vinyl sticky side up then put the battery cover on it, and line it up with the grid on the back of the vinyl. (I did it the other way and it's slightly crooked.) then just use a squeegee of some sort to flatten it out. Rough cut around the cover. Use a hairdryer on low to curve around the corners, just heat a bit, then stretch it around the corners. Now you can make your final cut around around the cover and cut out the camera hole and speakers.

Took me about 20 mins. This is the sheet I bought, these do have a textured feel. Also available in matte and other colors. There's also 3M Scotchprint 1080 which is newer and supposedly thinner. The Di noc does add a bit of an edge that you can feel around the back, but not too much and I like it.

it's vinyl wrap. I took the wheels off. cleaned them with soapy water then wiped them down with isopropyl alcohol. I had a left over roll of 5ft by 1ft and it covered 2 wheels (waiting for another 5x1 to do the other side 😂) I just positioned the wrap over the exposed alloy, stuck it, and cut off the excess. it's not a precise cut, maybe 2-3mm over hang. my though was is it would catch less and stay stuck to the wheel more when I'm mildly off roading. 😊

Most snowboard companies will not do "one-off" custom graphics. You can buy topsheet vinyl skins or buy some 3m auto wrap or paint it though.

I have a LX, with the chrome trim. I used black vinyl tape to cover the trim up

Ahh, so you got something like this and just cut it to size and stuck it on there, right?

This is the one I used. Actually shocked at how closely it matches the rest of the black in the interior! And I still have a ton left, so that’s good
