I also have a bunch of stuff on my registry that is inexpensive ($10-$25) for friends and if my coworkers decide to do a shower here which they have done for other new moms in the past. Here are some of the things I have on mine
Sleeping gowns so you don't have to unsnap the onesie for midnight changes

A baby tub

preferred bath/care products

Cloth diaps which make fantastic burp cloths/cleanup

Nursing pillow also good for tummy time


Plus some other odds and ends. People will also buy stuff that they like, so you'll probably get stuff that was not on your list and that is ok. You can also request to have a "diapers n wipes" shower which a friend did since she was on her 4th child, and she probably got 2 months worth of diapers and wipes out of it if not more. Also, make sure you get multiple covers for your changing pad, it'll be nice to have more than 1 when it needs washing! Congratulations!

It's hard to say - my son was 6lbs 12oz at birth and ended up wearing NB sizes for two months.

Knowing what I know now, I'd go with something like this -

Newborn:

Two packs of these sleep gowns - so you'll have 6 total. This is what my son wore... 80% of the time for a few months. Night and day - they allow the easiest access for diaper changes, especially with a sleeping baby. And no buttons or zippers to fuck with at 3am. Seriously - the best.

One Pack of the Gerber Onesies - so you've got 8 onesies that can be bleached if you need to.

One Pack of Leggings/Pants - so you'll have 4 pants total that you can throw over the onesies if you need to layer up.

One Pack of Socks - this is my favorite brand. They've never fallen off of my son in 17 months. As a newborn I'd put them on and pull them up over his pants and that helped keep them on before his feet grew big enough to hold them up. The pack I got were white, which don't seem to be available right now on Amazon, but if you can find white - DOOO EEEET. No one wants to try to match up 24 socks when they're sleep deprived. Just do white. Also - wash these in a mesh bag so they don't get lost to the sock monster.

Two Packs of Fleece Footies - depending on how cold it gets, fleece or cotton zipper footies. 4 pairs total will get you through the times you don't want to dress baby but need to be able to buckle her into a carset (which you can't do with the gowns).

That's pretty much all my son wore for months, barring like... his Christmas outfit, etc.

For 0-3 Months it's basically the same thing, just sized up. You'll figure out pretty quick which clothes work best for you and how many you need. My son, for example, ended up having horrible reflux. He spit up more than 10 average babies combined - so I think we ended up with around 50 onesies in 3-6 month sizing that all got worn multiple times. We went through around 7 outfit changes a day, even with bandanna bibs. So - lots of laundry. Also noteworthy is that this is when he started daycare, so we needed extra onesies for his earthquake kit, his emergency kit, his cubby, his diaper bag, etc - at least 7-10 onesies stashed places that never actually got used (so... save the godawful onesies you got as gifts but thought you'd never use for these emergency kits!).

But honestly - get you some Amazon Prime and your problems will be solved. Underbuy what you think you'll need clothing wise, and then when it becomes apparent that you need more of X, Y, or Z, load up your Amazon cart and you'll have it in two days.

I have a large LO, so you can imagine my frustration with tiiiiny arm and leg holes. No way her rolls will fit in them! I will note that I got some Carter's slim fits from Amazon that were actually stretchy (kind of thin too but thats ok cuz it's hot in CA). These ones So they have different versions of slim fit, which is even more confusing but I'm glad I found some that fit!

A kimono style gown was my favorite thing to dress my newborn in. I bought one of these two years ago for my oldest and plan to buy a couple more for my new one due in April. It was so soft and much thicker material than other clothes, was easy to get on and off and super great for diaper changes. It actually fit him right away because of the shoulder dimensions and he was able to wear it for several months because of how long it was.

For me, snacks. I ate soooo much because I was nursing, and didn't usually have a free hand to eat hot meals, but I ate lots of granola/Clif/Larabars.

These! were our favorite thing the first 6-10 weeks our daughter was out! No, it's a not one of the cute onesies, but the sleeves have caps to fold over their scratchy little hands, and there are no snaps for the 20x a day diaper changes, just lift up change, and pull back down to cover the feet and keep them warm. While the kiddo isn't mobile, and still small enough to wear them they were our favorite thing!!!!

I'm not exactly the mom you're aiming your question towards (when my now-10-year-old was born, he was almost 9 pounds and 21 inches long), but have you thought about getting a few gowns instead of sleepers or onesies? He lived in those things for the first few months; they're sooooo much easier than even the zipper sleepers for diaper changes, and I think they'd work well for your situation because she's long and skinny--they're longer than a sleeper/onesie would be because they don't have a bottom.

They're a pretty universal fit and the sleeves work as mittens. Plus the bottom is convenient for quick diaper changes since you don't have to zip/unzip.

We had the temperature issue and then got Ecobee and put sensors around the house. At bedtime the thermostat runs off of the sensors in both the girls rooms, which are the hottest rooms in the house. Their rooms stay at 69/70 and our room goes down to 62 sometimes. Since my husband and I have mastered keeping covers on by now, we deal just fine. Think of onesies as tshirts for babies. They have snaps to keep them tucked in so their adorable baby bellies don't get cold.

The most useful article of baby clothing in the world is the footie pajama/sleep & play.

I am a gigantic HP nerd to the point where my family asked me to please buy other clothes for my baby besides the Harry Potter ones that I had flooding my baby registry on Amazon (I have plenty more 😉)

I am, too. For the blanket problem, I would recommend sleep sacks (wearable blankets).

Some space heaters will tell you the size of the room it's capable of heating, so you might want to look into that.

I only have a biological toddler and I am not sure if we will take younger placements but I just split up my daughters old clothes 0-3T into 5 boxes (1.5 cuft). It really depends on kiddo and lifestyle. This is just a guess based off what we used.

Thanks for posting this--I have the same question! It's starting to get colder here and we're not sure what to do.

Right now we're OK--the house is at 65F and we've been following these guides: Sleeperific and Cooking for My Baby.

We weren't sure how these guides fit with swaddling, so we're treating the swaddle as a 1-tog layer.

But I can see it will get colder soon. Our furnace automatically turns down to 55F at night and we can't really afford to turn it up (because my husband is an idiot, see post history for details, sigh).

This claims that their Special Product(tm) can be used down to 55F without a hat...we may try that. I'm even more unsure how that is supposed to work with a swaddle, though.
