As someone else said, Kitchen-Aid standing mixers are awesome, but hella expensive. So unless you were planning on spending A LOT, maybe try something like this:
If she is geeky: Williams-Sonoma has Star Wars and Marvel cookie cutters/cupcake kits/cake pans/pancake molds/etc.
Mixing bowls are always a must, these are super cute and colorful, and have a grip and spout so they're easy to pour, and they have great reviews.
Here is a good set of different baking pans, I actually got this for my last birthday and they're great.
And since you said she likes cupcakes primarily, maybe a cupcake decorating book, icing tips and etc., cupcake recipe book, or maybe more generic baking-wise a cute apron or a cute recipe box. Good luck, I'm sure whatever you get her she'll love! And kudos to you for trying so hard to find a great gift for her. :)
Oh my god I'm so sorry about your puppy. ;_; a bajillion hugs I can't imagine that, I'd completely break down if I lost my dog.
I nominate /u/cats_and_vibrators for a wishlist item. She's amazing and I love her. She is always there for everyone, super supportive and caring. She deserves everything. Love you Maggie. <3
If I win I would love the kindle, I've had the paperwhite on my Maybe Someday... list for a while now. I love reading and having that would be amazing.
Congrats on the apartment! I love household-y stuff. You definitely need a good knife set!
And this awesome ice mold.
Mixing bowls are essential, and these are my favourite.
Cutest sushi service ever!
And for when you finally get a minute to relax, this bath oil would be perfect.
Thank you for the wonderful contest! I hope you have a really great week. :]
While they're a fantastic tool, a stand mixer is expensive. However, having a mixer on hand can be insanely useful. A decent handheld mixer can do the job for way less. Aside from that, these would be my suggestions.
1.) Knives. Get something decent and try to learn to keep them sharp. you don't need a huge knife block, 2 or 3 basics will do the trick. A small and large basic knife and a serrated knife will be plenty to start with. A set of basic cutting boards to go with these as well. Get more than one because you shouldn't cut raw meat on the same board as cooked meat or veggies and so on.
2.) Measuring tools. 1 set of measuring cups, 1 set of measuring spoons, 1 liquid measuring cup. I prefer metal for the first two and pyrex for the last. In my experience the numbers wear off the plastic ones pretty quickly and they stain. And yes you need all 3, liquids are measured differently than solids.
3.) Graduated mixing bowls. Pyrex are also great for these. I have this set and they have served me well.
4.) Pans. These really depend on what you want to do. If you want to focus more on cooking start off with a few basics. A larger stock pot, a sauce pan, one or two frying pans (i prefer to have multiple sizes) and some basic pans for the oven. A 13x9 metal or glass pan is a must have for me as well as an 8x8 or 9x9 square pan. If you want to bake as well you'll need to add cookie sheets and possibly a few more specialized items like muffin pans. Nonstick is sometimes frowned upon by chefs and cooks, but truth be told they're fine for most applications. Personally, I highly recommend against silicone pans. In my experience they smell foul and are a pain to clean.
5.) Utensils. Do not get the cheap shitty plastic set. Just don't. It's a waste of money. I cannot count how many cheap plastic spatulas I've thrown out because they melted or peeled or something. Go with silicone instead. You can use metal, but keep in mind metal tools+nonstick pans=scratched ruined pans. (This does not apply to spatulas used for things like stirring or spreading frosting btw, only to ones you will use on your stove). As for as what you'll need, I would suggest a set of wooden mixing spoons, and a set like this that includes the basic items; a normal spoon, a slotted spoon, a turner, and a pasta fork.
6.) Specialty utensils. Once again, these depend on what you want to do. Whisks are handy for a lot of things and a box grater comes in handy. A silicone pastry brush is nice for certain things and easier to clean than a normal one. A basic strainer was something I didn't realize how useful it was til I got it.
8.) Other Basics: Oven mits, towels, kitchen twine, tupperware in multiple sizes, egg separator, can/bottle opener.
9.) A basic cookbook. I'm a huge fan of this edition of the BH&G cookbook. On top of a lot of basic, fun recipes it includes a lot of extra information about tools, techniques, and some nifty tips and substitutions. I have a separate binder of my own recipes, but this is my most referenced cookbook.
What sorts of food are you hoping to learn to cook? I can expand on any of this depending on your interests.
I got some pretty good baking swag this year.
First up was a Kopykake. I will be making disgusting amounts of cookies over the next year putting this thing to the test.
A KitchenAid Architect was shocked to see it was the full set as these are stupid expensive.
Possibly my favorite gift for kitchen stuff this year was DrawerDecor which has finally made my drawers a non clusterfuck.
Steel prep table similar to this but not this model. Got it before Christmas but was told it was an early xmas gift.
Wire Shelving similar to this, but again not this model. Its 4' wide and each shelf can take 600. It freed up SO much room for me. I highly recommend more shelving for any of you guys/gals who have the room for it.
18" Magnetic Knife Strip, again more stuff out of shelves, off of counter tops etc.
Glass mixing bowls
Last but certainly not least, I finally got this cookie sheet from chicago metallic. Such a nice piece.
Now I think it is worth noting that I bake for a living, and that most people don't actually want a prep table or a 3' tall projector in their kitchen but damnit I love it! :)
The main theme for this xmas seems to be helping me get my kitchen to the OCD level needed in a professional kitchen. Not sure the missus loves the strict flow of kitchen as much as I do but man, it feels good and looks great.

Watching Movies
Does she like going to the theater, or does she like watching movies with you on the couch?
If the theater, movie tickets make an awesome gift, and you can usually get a gift card with a pair of two tickets pretty cheap!
If at home, make a movie gift basket! Go to the dollar store, and find her favorite candy, soda, etc. Grab some microwave popcorn. Pop it in a cute basket or even one of those plastic popcorn containers (or go to your local theater and see if they'll give you one of their cardboard ones for free...) You can throw a DVD in there, too, or one of those Redbox rental coupons, if you have that in your area.
You can definitely put leaves in a tray and coat them with epoxy. If you want to go the tray route I suggest getting a premade untreated wood tray from Amazon. Some of these will need to be sealed while others do not. Usually the ones with the lip on the bottom side need to be sealed. I use hot glue and go around the whole bottom so you cant see anymore gaps. Once its sealed you can pretty much put whatever you want into the epoxy. Plastic leaves would probably be better since real ones will rot I would imagine eventually. If you want to do coasters I would use this mold seems to work the best.
Alumilite Casting Epoxy Resin. Get that. It comes in a kit with mixing sticks and clear cups. The cups that come with it arent really big enough to mix the amount of epoxy you need for something as big as a tray so I suggest getting some bigger cups. You will need two types of pigments for a beach tray. Blue and white. I use PearlEx pigment brand I think it looks great. You can use other dyes and alcohol inks but for making solid colors I find the pigments work the best. Find an area you can work that is clean and that you can also control the climate. After you have sealed your tray start mixing epoxy. Make sure you follow the instructions PRECISELY. Not follwing the instructions can leave you with your epoxy not curing properly and ruining your project. If you have a small digital scale that one would use for weighing mail use this to measure the epoxy. It will help get the ratio as precise as possible. Use gloves as it is not fun to get on your skin. I would say mix up about 12 to 17oz of epoxy so the bottom of the tray will have a good thick layer. Separate the epoxy into 3 seperate cups. Make one cup all blue, the next a mix of blue and white and then one all white. For blending you will need a heat gun or a hair dryer will work as well. Add the darker blue then the lighter blue then the white in 3 fairly equal parts but save a little of the white at the end. Pick up your tray and move it around and let the epoxy mix a little and cover the whole bottom of the tray. You can also use your hands that have gloves on them to smear and mix them together. Once you have this done hit it with the heat gun a little to make a more wavy look. Add thin lines of the white you have left over then hit those with the hair dryer as well and spread around making a wave looking design. After that you are pretty much done. Leave it alone and let it cure.
You need a nice set of mixing bowls! And Pyrex are the best. Seriously, I love those bowls. I used to have a set, but gave them to my sister when she got her first apartment. I'd love to have them again and I think you would love them too! They're on my "household-y stuff" list.
Thank you for the contest! :)
What does your kitchen have? Stovetop (gas/electric coil/induction)? Oven? Microwave? Hot plate?
If you're willing to learn how to treat cookware properly, pick up a cast iron skillet. Imo they are the best value you can find. /r/castiron
Get some silicone kitchen utensils (something like this ). Doesn't melt as easily as plastic does
I'd recommend getting a single knife and cutting board. Plastic or wood board, and a 8-10" chef's knife. If you feel that that knife is too unwieldy, you can also pick up a smaller one.
Pick up a stock pot, I'd say probably 5-8qt
Bakeware is pretty cheap, imo you're best off getting a set ( e.g. ) /r/baking
Also look at possibly getting a slow cooker. While not necessary, I love mine. If you have the money to spend, get a programmable one. If not, pick up one at a yard sale or thrift store (just make sure the crock isn't cracked) /r/slowcooking
I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't know if I can say anything to help but I give you long distance internet hugs and you'll be in my thoughts.
I'm only creative in the kitchen. This and this from my Baking wishlist would go a long way in supporting one of my few talents.
Thank you for the contest. <3
As a professional baker, there are two books that I recommend:
I doubt it's in your price range, but every baker absolutely needs a kitchen-aid standing mixer.
Other necessary items: wire whisk, rubber spatula, good set of bowls, various pans, or at least two half sheet pans, measuring cups, measuring spoons, bench scraper, etc.
Wilton has a good cupcake decorating kit. Offset spatulas are necessary for any decorating, 4" for cupcakes, 8" for most cakes. If she likes cake decorating, then she needs a cake wheel and a decorating comb.
I personally go for more practical items as opposed to novelty items. I hope some of that was useful.
Maybe I can help with this. I got these from Amazon a few weeks ago - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00XBC3T6Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
As far as trays go, it's early days, but they've been great so far. We don't put them in the dishwasher, would be the only thing I'd point out.
Otherwise, great value for money, so far.
This toaster oven would be a dream come true because I do not have a ACTUAL oven. The house I moved into didn't have a working oven, so I've been using a little toaster oven to make meals for my family until we can save up enough money to replace our appliances. (The fridge leaks a lot too, so we want to save to replace both) my current toaster oven is really old and doesnt have half the cooking modes this one does, and mine cooks unevenly, plus it's a smaller toaster oven so this one would be a nice upgrade.
Under $20 would be these they would allow me to cook a bit better in my current toaster oven.
C'mon...gimme
Thanks for the lovely contest! You're awesome!
Olaf's nose! Carrot sticks with a thick dip (both to avoid drips/mess and to be more snow-like in appearance), maybe sour cream and onion?
You could also do little snowman faces on bagels/bread with cream cheese and raisins for the features - but it looks like you already have a lot of filling bread-based foods on your menu!
You could also be goofy and make a couple different kinds of sandwiches (some PB&J and ham&cheese or something) and give every kid a piece of each so they're "finishing each other's sandwiches" like the song from the film. Might be a good excuse for a singalong :P
Edit: Oh, and for drinks depending on how much advanced prep you want to do you could pick up a snowflake mold and make some snowflake-shaped ice cubes with blue food coloring and water. Just stick one of those cubes in each glass along with the regular ice and voila, fancy, Elsa was here!
We could honestly use these baking pans because we really don't have 98% of what is here. I only have one Pyrex bowl to bake/cook, a cast iron skillet foreverything in the oven (i have frying pans) and a pizza pan. It would be amazingly helpful and would make those two last a lot longer. :)
I am sorry that I copied my response from /u/IDFKwhereGilliganIs's contest, we just really need them.
PLUS YOU COULD GIFT ANOTHER PERSON WITH THE REST OF THE MONEY!!
You should get your mom something like this or this!
Myself, I would love this.
What a great way to use the community! :D
Hmm could be! I got a nice little set of toaster oven sized trays on amazon recently for very cheap, like $15. I'll find the link! (Also, not sure why your other comment got downvoted... You were just being honest. Hmm...)
Here's the tray set if you're interested. 3 different ones for only $13 total!
Takin' care of business!
I would like to get these for my mom, I believe it would make her life easier because she's always cooking and doesn't have many bowls. So this would help! :) she's also a stay at home parent
baking/ [polish] (http://www.amazon.com/China-Glaze-Polish-Westside-Warrior/dp/B005EHID3U/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3F0OLRWNN54YV&coliid=I1Y2S5LZPQXHK1) I want these so I can bake with beautiful nails.
Schmad on my add on Thank you for contest ;)
jacketed stirred glass reactor is the way to go, Chemglass has nice ones.
If you are looking for improv support similar to cork ring, that can be immersed in hot water bath, I would buy some round flexible kitchenware made of silicone rubber - cake baking molds for example
https://www.amazon.com/Bakeware-Set-Nonstick-Silicone-Rectangular/dp/B00M16H2C0/ref=sr_1_16?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1493343299&sr=1-16&refinements=p_n_material_browse%3A316646011
Also, what tends to break the flask is vibrations from unbalanced stirring, so make sure there is flexible coupling connector between your mechanic stirrer motor and the stirring shaft
Everything else, crock pots, even measuring cups, is optional. Slow cookers, microwaves, electric kettles, and rice cookers are all nice, but there is nothing you can make in them that you can't make in a pot, like humans did for thousands of years. You'll want measuring cups for baking, but for cooking you're adjusting on the fly anyways.

Thank you! :)
In Elem school my friend would mix up a bunch of things from the cafeteria and I would eat them to show what a badass I was.
The thing that got me was a concoction of mashed potatoes and gravy, ketchup, mustard, chocolate milk, raisins, butter, and orange juice.
It was the potatoes. I've never liked potatoes unless they're crispy and fried.

While I prefer to deep fry mine, I use a wire cooling rack placed on top of a bakers pan / cookie sheet.
This works well with just about anything you put in the oven.
Some is. You have to look for it though.
Or just buy a different brand and still call it pyrex like a normal person.
OXO brand pyrex
This. As a person who loves to cook, I am woefully lacking in proper prep pieces....especially bowls.
