I'm glad to hear your parents are understanding--that really helps so much.
> my left si joint doesn't move/barely moves so if we can get it to drop back where it needs to that should fix a lot of my pain
Hey, high five! My left SI is also nearly permanently dislocated. Yay us! Has your doc/PT given you either shoe lifts or an SI brace? The brace didn't help me a lot, but it does help some people. The shoe lift did help. Essentially my SI is rotated up and back, so my left leg is a bit shorter than my right. My PT would get it back into place, but it'd dislocate again within an hour or so of leaving her. The shoe lift keeps my hips level, and helps the SI stay in place. It's pretty cheap, no one else can see it, and it really helped me--def worth a shot.
Also, is it your left knee causing problems? I'm guessing it is. When you see your ortho, make sure he knows about your SI. He won't be able to properly address the knee pain if your whole leg is out of alignment because of your hip--he'll have to address everything as a whole.
Here's the thing with POTS. A lot of people with EDS also have POTS, because our blood vessels are also made of collagen--which for us, is defective. When you move to stand up, your autonomic nervous system makes certain adjustments, to ensure enough blood gets to your brain while upright. It constricts the blood vessels in your extremities, to help 'push' the blood upwards. But our blood vessels can be a bit stretchy, and don't always constrict properly. That means blood pools in our legs, etc, and not enough gets pushed up to our brains. Because of that, our blood pressure drops. Then, to try to get enough blood moving upwards, our hearts start beating really fast. So you get the 'perfect storm', low blood pressure, high heart rate = dizziness and faintness, and general unpleasantness.
Add to that, many people with POTS have lower than normal blood volume, too. So there just isn't enough blood to go around in the first place. That's where salt and steroids come in. For some reason, our kidneys tend to just push all the fluids straight through, instead of adding to our blood volume. The salt/steroids 'trick' our kidneys into retaining fluid. That helps build up the blood volume, and helps us feel better. It doesn't actually 'cure' POTS, it just helps alleviates the symptoms.
Another thing that can help is an SSRI like fluoxetine (prozac) or SNRI like venlafaxine (effexor). They typically used as antidepressants, but they help stimulate vasoconstriction, so more blood goes up. I don't recommend effexor, it has awful side effects and terrible withdrawal. Fluoxetine is much less drastic and has few side effects for most people.
Beta blockers reduce the heart rate by blocking the receptors that are responsible for the effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine. It helps some people, but I'm not one of them. Essentially, my cardio told me that he could put me on a beta blocker and it would bring my heart rate down--but I'd probably pass out every time I sat up. Basically, your body compensates for the low BP by raising the heart rate. Take that away, and even less blood gets to your brain---down you go.
I should mention that not everyone with POTS has low BP when upright. If you're one of those whose BP raises, beta blockers may help you. Ask your cardio if that's an option. If you don't feel he's being aggressive enough in his treatment, don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Or bring your mom in with you, and have her help explain exactly how much this affects your quality of life. I've found that most docs really aren't in a big hurry to treat EDS and POTS--they want to take things slowly and 'see what happens'; mainly because these are life-long conditions. Don't be afraid to ask for more if that slow approach isn't working for you. Be polite, but firm. Sometimes it helps to keep a log of your symptoms and take it to an appointment. I made a list of all the things I couldn't do anymore, and it got the doc's attention.
Also--compression stockings can really help! You can try support hose from your local store, or find compression stockings online (amazon is good). I prefer the thigh-highs, but ymmv. Also, I don't wear them in public, cause yuck. lol The other thing is to avoid heat as much as possible, including hot showers, baths, etc. The heat also dilates your blood vessels and exacerbates everything.
>I spend most of my days laying in bed replaying shows I've already seen on Netflix and I hate it.
I hear you. I've had a really bad flare since mid-Feb, and that's pretty much what I've been doing. I can't sit up for too long, so I browse reddit while laying down, then sit up to comment. lol
If your hands are bothering you that much, you really should see an OT sooner than later. Check with your insurance (or have your parents do it!) and see if you need a referral to see a specialist. Some insurance policies don't require that. If so, you could just make an appointment yourself and save some time. (I'd call first to see if they have experience with EDS--not all do.) If not, bug your primary until they send you.
Again, let them know you can't write, use your laptop, probably can't open bottles or carry a gallon of milk, I'm guessing? Doors difficult to open? Look on amazon for 'arthritis aids'. I know it's silly since you're only 19, but there's a lot of overlap in things that can help us. My geneticist recommended these pens, though I haven't tried them yet. I use the Dr Grip pens, they're fat enough to lessen the pain in my hands when writing. Also, those pencil grips kids use are great--and you can put them on colored pencils and lots of other things.
This got a bit long, sorry for that! Hope some of it helps, though. Just remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There are a lot of us out here; we get it. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and feel free to pm me if you need to vent or whatever. I'm just hanging out at home being bored too! ;)
Ahh you’re too sweet!! Not gonna lie, it’s taken me a long time to love my curls but I’m finally on the right path. I bet yours are gorgeous as well! Especially if you have the volume close to Merida’s - would love to see pics if you have them!! I’m a fan of Devacurl products and I’m using Big Sexy Hair for color protective shampoo and conditioner, too. I haven’t tried the Marc Anthony stuff yet! Do you like it? Does it help with frizz at all? Because that’s STILL my biggest problem, most days 🤣
Yes exactly!! Lol great minds think alike! I also like the Tombow twintone makers, especially for my bullet journal. Such awesome colors and the pen side is really nice, too. And these pens are usually pretty smooth (i think they skip sometimes because I keep them on their side in a pouch) but they are 0.3 and lovely! Pilot Hi-Tec-C Maica Gel Ballpoint Pens
These are so fun
edit: also all of this is already on my WL, i forgot to say that. EDIT: I stopped being lazy and came back and found the ones I was missing, so they're not on my WL but I specified that by each of them
1. Something grey I guess this is really silver... oops.
2. Reminiscent of the rain Not on my WL
3. Something food related that's unusual
4. Something for someone else - My girlfriend had a stroke last year and when she was in the hospital on all her medication she was telling me she wanted a Pooh Bear pillow pet and her grandma got her a "happy napper" in the shape of a bee or something and she spent days telling me she needed a Pooh Bear pillow pet and I've looked everywhere for one for her since last July but I can't find one!
5. A book you need to read - This is the book A Christmas Story was kind of based on and that's my favorite Christmas movie because it's hilarious.
6. Under $1 Not on my WL
7. Something related to cats
8. Something not useful but so beautiful I must have it
9. A movie everyone must watch - My best friend saw this a few years ago on TV and when she was telling me about it I thought it sounded so stupid but she made me come over and watch it anyway and it's seriously the funniest movie I've ever seen. Anyone who likes movies that are kind of stupid-funny absolutely needs to see it because I laugh so hard every single time.
10. Something that would be useful when zombies attack - An external charger in case your phone dies when you're not around somewhere you can plug it in when you're out fighting or hiding from zombies would be super important so you can stay in contact with people and make sure they're not turned into/being eaten by zombies
11. Something that has had an impact on your life - Highlighting things for school so I can find them later has been more helpful than listening during class. Except I go crazy and highlight the entire page.
12. An add-on item
13. Most expensive item - My explanation for this is the biggest "first world problem" in the universe, but oh well. I'm a college student and my current computer is a desktop so I can't take it to class with me or work on stuff before class in the student lounge and I can't lay in bed and watch Netflix and when I move across the country soon after graduation, I'm gonna have to pack it all up and move it with me and it's gonna take up so much space and it's just such a pain. Plus, this computer is getting kind of old and slow and it'll randomly just turn off and it's so annoying and I've tried everything to fix it and everything that people who have looked at it have told me haven't been able to help and I'd really rather just get a new computer because it would be so much easier for the future. Wow, that sounded so whiny.
14. Something bigger than a bread box
15. Something smaller than a golf ball
16. Something that smells wonderful
17. SFW toy
18. Something that would be helpful going back to school. - I have class 3 hours a day, 5 days a week and I get starving sitting there that long so I always try to take something with me to eat, but it's so annoying to try and find something to put it in or have it get crushed in the packaging and stuff.
19. Something related to your current obsession
20. Something so amazing you must see it - IT'S A BIG BOX OF GEL PENS, NOTHING IS COOLER! I remember when they sold them at the store by my grandma's when I was like 8 and they were like $2.79 each so I could never get any, when I finally could get them they weren't cool anymore but I still loved them.
BONUS - Something made in Oregon. *Not on my WL
Fear cuts deeper than words ! :)
For a fountain pen, I would recommend (not really calligraphy, but they do look fancy compared to ballpoints)
For calligraphy, I would recommend
Edit: Like shugpug said, It depends what script you are trying to practice.
Your bag may or may not be EDC by definition but here is a quick pack outline.
Bag: Vertx EDC Gamut
This is a CCW oriented bag, search LoadedPocketz and Youtube for reviews and the bag in action. There's a ton of organization in it for carrying lots of stuff, plus it's loaded with Velcro so you can either use Velcro add-on's or use their Tactigami to convert anything Molle to attach to their velcro.
Organizers - The Gamut is great but you might want to throw in something like a Maxpedition EDC/Beefy/Fatty to organize tools and supplies as needed, plus you can take them out of the bag if you want to be more mobile. E.G. leave bag in car but take IT toolkit with you to a site.
Tools:
Small light with multiple settings you so can use low settings for close up work with minimal reflection, or full brightness for other uses. Lots of lights will work for this purpose, headlamps work even better for hands-free but you'll look like a dork.
Then you have the EDC items you'll hear most people say:
Sorry to hear about your mom my friend, but it is good knows to hear you are back in a good place. One thing that makes me happy is looking at the stars. Just something about the giant space that is the universe puts me at ease and always a smile on my face. Another thing I love to do is write. I love to write, and especially with these pens.. I just think they glide on the paper, and so when I get really into whatever I am writing, the pen makes it seem effortless.
Papa Johns worker with Irma right around the corner.
Top Row (from left to right):
Oakley SI Half Jacket 2.0: $72 with knockoff polarized mirrored lenses bought on amazon here for $20.
Leatherman Pro Wave: Not a special edition of Wave, just bought through Leatherman's Pro program. $55 with the clip found here for $5.
Timex Ironman Classic 30: Great $30-$40 digital watch that through everything has yet to hiccup, let alone fail, once.
iPhone 7: Matte Black. I'm one of those people who actually doesn't love or hate apple of android. I just happen to have a macbook and an iPhone, and that works for me.
Otterbox Symmetry Series: Wanted a $35 case to match my phone and got one. Lint and dust all over the port openings and inside the case?! Works great, just likes to get dirty.
Oakley SI Flak Beta Prism: $117 through Oakley's standard issue, these are the steel frames thanks to some confusing customer service calls. Polarized lenses with their mumbo jumbo technology actually make colors pop a bit.
Middle Row:
Black Leather Wallet: I don't know, probably found at Kohls or something. Nothing special, just gets the job done.
Field Notes Expedition: Awesome $13 notebooks that use a plasticy paper for writing in any conditions. Finally halfway through my first book, as I like to use all of the real estate available on each page. A bit worn, but character, right?
Amazon Special Wristwatch: There's so much conflicting branding everywhere, who knows who makes it. Anyway, have had it for a while and it seems to tell time. The band is a bit weird, but what would one expect for $16?
Car Keys: RIP me. I drive a minivan. sigh. Oh well, it's what I got.
Bottom Row:
Spyderco Tenacious: Perfect $40 knife if you don't want a beater and also don't want your wallet to scream in agony. I just need a good whetstone set to be able to do it justice.
Bose Soundsport Earbuds: Stay in my weird ears. I exercise regularly, but that doesn't mean I like it. Music helps me forget the lactic acid burning my muscles. They don't make the audio-only ones anymore, so here's a $99 pair for apple devices.
Wristbands: Air Force Academy in blue and Domestic Violence in purple. I wear these because I don't want to expose myself to the world of "Etsy." yikes.
Chrome Fisher Space Pen Bullet With Clip: ~$20 and so damn slippery. Awesome pen for being a pen, but I need something more practical for greasy hands. Any ideas? Not looking for anything more than like 30 bucks.
Kizer Vagnino Velox 2: A beautiful flipper on ballbearings. HOLY cow this thing flies out with vengeance and feels like a million bucks. A true gentleman's folder. However, I am not a gentleman... I see some ugly grip tape in it's future to make up for impracticality of no serrations on the back of the blade or handle for grip. Before anyone tries to complain about a 17 yr old with a $200 knife, I found 'er on Massdrop for $82 after shipping. Would I say it is worth the 13 hours of work needed to pay for it? Yes. Yes I would.
First of all this is the item i think you will purchase with this order - http://amzn.com/B00006IE7L
Now for my list.... prepare to get wood ;)
Thank you so much for the contest, I had alot of fun putting this together. Happy Happy cake day /u/ask_seek_knock! and good luck to everyone!
This may not be viable, but I find that my handwriting greatly improves when I use a fountain pen. Because they need to be held in a certain way to work, I find I pay more attention to the writing and make my chicken scratch much more legible. Consider a Pilot Varsity for a cheap way to try it out.
You could also try a pen with a better grip, like a Pilot Dr. Grip or Uniball Signo 207 Premier. Both of those pens will probably reduce some of the strain on your hand and may help you write better.
But, a pen itself won't work. It'll take deliberate practice to improve.
California. We have snowcapped mountains and gorgeous, deep-blue oceans all within the same view. The weather goes from freezing cold mountain air to boiling hot desert winds, right down to perfect, tropical warmth. We have incredibly awesome animals; huge bears, mountain lions, sharks, whales, seals, eagles... just name it! We have it. We used to not have wolves but as of a few months ago a lone gray wolf has descended south enough from Oregon that it officially became the first California gray wolf in decades.
I might live in a crowded city, but just a quick drive west into Malibu and her gorgeous mountain ranges and I get this sunset over the ocean.
California is like hell and heaven, all in one. The great frontier, even to this day. I can never live without the grandness of these mountains and terrain. Maybe, maybe Alaska, but California is just so amazingly wonderful.
I love these pens so much.
One girl at my store always gets the pharmacists something... a personalized badge holder or a neat pen or something. She's the only one who does, because what also happens is that the pharmacists throw a huge party for us and we all do a white elephant gift exchange but then the pharmacists will also get a personalized gift for someone sometimes, like maybe the lead tech or someone who just got married or something. My point is, mostly the pharmacists give US gifts.
Having said that, here are some ideas!
Chill Pill Bath Bombs
Pens that look like syringes
Highlighters that look like syringes
PharmD Coffee Mug
Funny wine glass
Candles in Beakers
Chill Pill Ice Cube Molds
Anyway... hope you find something cool.
Similar to what tyrghast wrote, but using any old pen doesn't work 90% of the time (efficiency-wise)
First, ya buy one of these guys at any office store:
http://www.amazon.com/Zebra-F-301-Retractable-Stainless-9-Pack/dp/B002JP1AH6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321380578&sr=8-1
Take it apart until you are left with the metal tube/shaft and nothing else.
Then you grab a pencil, the circular kind that are commonly used for advertising. These pencils will fit the diameter of the pipe almost perfectly so you don't have to worry about missing part of the puck.
I prefer to have a friend hold the tube upright as I start shoveling the kief into the top (typically less of a mess) with a guitar pick or any other non-porous transporter.
Then, slide the pencil down the tube and put as much pressure as you can on the kief, I usually do this 3-4 times make sure I'm hitting all of the edges with my pencil.
Once you feel like it is compacted enough to hold its own, keep the pencil stationary as you lift the tube. And then you're left with a beautiful pill-sized puck that you can throw into any bowl on its own!!!
Here's a picture of some I made for 4/20 this past year:
http://i.imgur.com/FcZV1.jpg
My dad made me practice practice practice my penmanship when I was younger. So every time there was a scrap piece of paper and a pen, I would practice my signature and alpha numeric characters. As I got older, I fine-tuned my penmanship style and kept practicing. My father's penmanship is very precise with straight edges and few loops. All his letters are the same height (he writes in all caps) with a slight slant. My penmanship is usually pretty vertical and has more loops. I think the only rule is that it has to be neat and legible.
Some things that I found that help me write more neatly:
A smooth pen or a sharp pencil.
At least one piece of paper underneath the thing I am writing on.
Taking my time. If I am writing something that will be permanent (like labeling something with a permanent marker), I may practice once or twice on a sheet of paper and make sure that all the letters will fit and there is even spacing. If writing a letter, I will think about what I want to write first, then write it down (this also helps with editing). If I am filling a form, I will increase the space between all my letters so that way they can all be read clearly.
This is the cheapest pen that BIC makes:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bic_Cristal#/media/File:03-BICcristal2008-03-26.jpg
It's press fit. This looks like every disposable pen ever. Here's another:
https://www.amazon.com/BIC-Round-Medium-Point-12-Count/dp/B00006IE7L
This is what is in the coffee mug at the doctor's office with his name on it and they say "keep it". Here's the "Clic Stic", another classic, also press fit:
https://www.cheappens.com/bic-clic-stic-p/cs.htm
Now once you start getting up to this level you get threads:
https://www.amazon.com/BIC-Velocity-Retractable-Point-12-Count/dp/B004F9QBDC/ref=sr_1_16?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1505412401&sr=1-16&keywords=pen
These are clearly meant to be refilled, and it's even listed as a feature. This is probably what OP was thinking of. These types of pens are extremely common, and yet, I don't think they're more common than the ones above to the point you could call them "most pens".
Up in my office I've got some pens that I bought off amazon like 10 years ago. They are truly trash. They have a threaded back end that barely holds the whole thing together. I looked and looked, but can't find a picture of any of these. Perhaps they will be worth money some day. Anyway, that's what I was thinking of, but apparently they're not very common.
And with that, I've just spend 20 minutes looking at pictures of pens so I guess I should get back to work.
edit - I realized I got totally sidetracked. Yes, you'll notice the press-fit ones usually use a pretty soft plastic for the "press" part, even if they use a harder plastic for the tube. Some of the Bics use the same material (medium hardness) for both the tube and the press part; I imagine these are really efficient because they only have to keep that one material. The ones I mention above used hard plastic for both the end and the tube, which is probably why they had to make it threaded. These are all design decisions that achieve some inscrutable internal marketing requirement, but they are also probably the cheapest way they could be made at whichever factory makes them.
My favorite bolt action pen is the tactile turn. The short version. It can accept the longer G2 inks and similar, you just have to cut them down to size. I think titanium or aluminum is a must - the copper and brass ones are quite heavy. For copper or brass, I like the tiscribe bolt. But, the tiscribe's clip sucks. It looks cool to make the clip the bolt, but in practice the retention is awful. The clip is more of a hook than a clip.
For a less expensive but still awesome pen, check out the Boker 50cal. My brother has been carrying his for 4 years and it still looks like new. I carried one for 2 years with the same result. It can only take parker style ink (or fisher space pen).
Probably the cheapest high quality bolt action pen is this guy. It's just heavy, but it's extremely well made. Won't take G2 sized ink, though. Only parker. Real CF! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FF8X6CJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Sorry I didn't offer to actually sell you anything :) just trying to help point you in the right direction!
The Jetstream pen by uni-ball is exactly what you describe for tip #1.
I'm a righty but have a claw or hook to my hand when writing. What this does is that my right pinky and ring fingers would be dirty like this every day in school from "dragging" my pencil behind when writing.
The Jetstreams dry super quick and are amazingly smooth. Found them early on in college and still keep a supply of them handy. Might be a little pricey but for me, since I don't have to push as hard as a regular cheap pen to get clean solid lines, my hand doesn't cramp up as fast.
I've spent a lot of time on JetPens learning about the different brands.
My personal favorites:
As far as fountain pens, I like the Pilot Kakuno. I like the design, they write nicely, and are pretty cheap.
Muji Gel Ink Ballpoint pens
Pilot Hi-Tec-C Maica
Pilot Juice
Unibal Signo UM-151
If you have are interested in erasable pens (highlighters, markers), I recommend Pilot Frixion. There are a ton of options.
Rotring Rapid PRO technical drawing pen. Absolutely beautiful if you're willing to spend $50. It's the only thing I've owned where people used it and said "fuck, that's a great pen." Though I think the mechanical pencil version is more impressive.
I also really love this faber-castell pen, on the non-technical side.
I would suggest maybe checking out some of the smaller Zebra pens like the (Zebra Mini Ballpoint Pen T-3) (https://www.amazon.com/Zebra-Ballpoint-T-3-Black-Silver/dp/B0018RHUM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499268851&sr=8-1&keywords=zebra+pens+small). It's more around 4 inches but it's a metal body and pretty slim. They're like $5 I think each, but can accept refills. Because it's thin it might be more comfortable clipped to your wallet.
I have a Retro51 Tornado and it's a great pen... I don't love it, though. The refill feathers on some paper (yes, I know I can change the refill!), and it sort of wiggles in the tip of the pen when I write which bothers me. I recently got a Rotring Rapid Pro ballpoint and am really enjoying it. It has a nice weight without being overly heavy, the refill is smooth and free of ballpoint boogers, and I personally love the knurling on the grip.
The Pilot V7 was a longtime favorite of mine. I never thought I'd have good reason to say this online, but I worked at Office Depot through college and got to try out pretty much a million different pens. Being a bit of a penmanship guy it was fun. I eventually landed on the Uni-ball Jetstream Ballpoint - fine tip, just the capped kind, not retractable - and it's been my weapon of choice for at least 10 years. Smoother than hot ice skate blades running on a freshly zamboni'd rink, and no bleeding. Funny how Reddit brings people together like this lol
I'll interpret "guy stuff" as "EDC stuff".
Bonus item: This isn't under $30, but $45 wil buy you a Leatherman Skeletool, which is one of the most universally useful items I own.
Edit: "EDC" stands for Every Day Carry. To paraphrase the /r/EDC sidebar, EDC means the essentials that I carry a daily basis. Things that I either use every day, or want to have with me in case I might need them. Sorry for the confusion, /u/ForgottenEcho and /u/Sanctitas.
Good luck! I know you're stressed about this decision and I hope the hotel doesn't screw you over again!
I think you need some nice pens it's always helpful to have a reliable pen on you.
As for me... this is all I want in the world.
Don't worry about me though. Take care of yourself!
Well, here's the deal: you're flying internationally to Japan, so you will want to travel light. Also, you can pretty much buy anything you need in your mission too. This said, here's my recommendations.
Edit: buy a zebra, not a pilot. My goodness.
Ahh!! That's it! I used to get these all the time, Japanese stationary stores are really something else. My favorite was very small, but 5 stories tall, and had just about everything you can think of.
Amazon has the pen & pencil:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018RF0IQ/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018RHUM0/
Now I just need a justification to buy some. They feel like they most amazing portable pens to insert into moleskin type diaries.

17 - Quikcell S160 Stereo Bluetooth Wireless Headset

When I'm having a shitty day and I get to where I just can't take it anymore I will either sit outside in the sun or in my closet... if it's raining/cold, and I'll just breathe. I love breathing exercises and clearing my mind. If that doesn't work I put on the Coldplay album Parachutes, put on the headphones and just go away to my happy place. :)
A set of cute and useful pens is always a must have, amirite? :D
I have a multifunction drafting ruler with a universal roller attachment for drafting. It does EVERYTHING
ooh, also I got a cheap kindle e-reader and put all my notes on it in PDF for review.
And an espresso machine and grinder! And source your beans at Costco
My roommate got a beautiful printer with 1200DPI scanner for ~100$. absolutely essential.
Andie Graph graphing calculator app if you've got an android phone
Second the whiteboard call. Also, I got these little sticky things for slapping papers on the wall, great for reference while drafting.
one of these or similar.
Dropbox and put EVERYTHING in it
That covers it, mostly. Dollarama has some good mechanical pencils, and I just stole all my drafting paper from my roomie. She doesn't need it, she's in the sciences.
I second Tombow Dual Brush pens, but there is a learning curve. You have to hold the pens at an angle to avoid fraying. Also, certain papers can cause them to fray as well, so you want really smooth paper (such as Rhodia, found on amazon)
To get a good feel for thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes though, I always recommend the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pens. They're much smaller and easier to learn on in my opinion.
Then I moved on to Tombows and Artline Stix Brush Pens.
It's a four colour ballpoint! Not an "artpen" as such and I mainly use it in school when cleaning up notes, but they're pretty fun to draw with as well! it's a bicpen so it's actually decently cheap.
Also got another in pastel tones :)
They look pretty slick, too. Probably my favorite behind the Tornado, which is the best-writing pen I've ever used for its price point. The only reason I don't still use the Tornado is because I received a very nice pen as a gift that I otherwise would not be able to justify buying, and it does write incredibly smooth.
You can get some inexpensive ones on eBay if you're willing to wait on the shipping from China on most of them. I found this brass one for $12, this clipless stainless steel one for $15, and this American flag themed one for $22. There was a long list, I just put in "bolt pen" and did a search. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for, and some of the ones from China will not have a substantial feel in the hand and may have some rough edges in the finishing.
I found some better options on Amazon, including the Bastion. They make two versions, the full stainless steel and the stainless/carbon fiber, and they're both $25. I like the look of the full stainless better, but that bad boy is heavy, so I'd recommend the version with the carbon fiber - it's a little lighter. This one comes in three colors, black, gray, & rose gold, and is less than $14.
There are plenty of options out there, but, if you don't mind and/or want a heavy pen, the Bastion would be my suggestion. I got one of each on their Kickstarter, and you'll probably get the best fit & finish from that one.
OP thought they were getting this:
rOtring Rapid PRO Retractable Ballpoint Technical Drawing Pen, Medium Point, Matte Black, Blue Ink (1904292) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055ZZQFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9Cs8Ab1HWKF0H
But ordered the pencil version. They are pretty cool. My pen is on the way and I’m super excited for it.
For surface scratches and general touch up, I've used Birchwood Casey Super Black Touch-Up Pen, Flat. I filed a handle smooth and used this to touch up. Was pretty happy. 8/10.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00JSAE0ZY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525642943&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=birchwood+casey+super+black&dpPl=1&dpID=310Q
I'm in the same boat -- I love the F-301 but mine are constantly breaking at the plastic threads. I've just ordered an F-701 and some uniball jetstreams. I think this one looks really nice but at the price I have to imagine that it's made mostly of plastic. Anyone have any experience with the Pilot Better Pen?
These pens. I need a lot for work, starting Wednesday, since I will be working with medical records. I've used them before, and they are one of my favorites. They write really smoothly and are super comfortable to use frequently!
For Light Carry:
The Zhigao pens are made for spinning, as well as some others which haven't enjoyed the same longevity (SpinZ, PenZ'Gear). Many people regard these pens as inferior to mods made from the parts of other pens. Also, some people like these or these for unmodded spinning. The first is often used by Ease, a World Tournament competitor, and the second is used by Onacler, who is less well known but still pretty good.
Let's celebrate! I love these retro pens! ($5.46... close enough?)
(Fountain Pen) Here ya go ladies, this is perfect for you! It has a nice grip for your delicate hands. It has a nice smooth tip that goes in and out at your pleasure. It has a nice stiff clip but with a little use, it will surely loosen up! We have them in a few different colors, so it fits any womans needs. It may look small, but it is by no means tiny. Grab one or two, depending on your preference. And dont forget ladies, always put a cap on it!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00006IEBT/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1415854106&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40
I've heard Snow Crash is really good. This is the pen brand that I really like. The ink flows well, when it runs out you can tell it's completely out and there is no ink left. And I like that the ink doesn't smudge at all when writing. It's not very sharp, not like a rollerball pen. But I love it.
In addition to the Parker G2 style, another option is the rollerball & gel refills that are somewhat standard sized. Examples for them would be the Pentel Energel, Zebra Sarasa, Pilot G2, and Uni Signo 207/307. They're all relatively interchangeable. (I believe the Pilot G2 tends to be less compatible than the others.)
For ballpoint (well, hybrid), some Uni Jetstream refills are also the same size, and tend to fit in the same pens. And they write beautifully. (For example, the refills for these pens: https://www.amazon.com/Uni-ball-33932PP-Jetstream-Coloration-Assorted/dp/B0004F7ILA/ )
Inexpensive pens that hold either are the Energel Alloy & Sarasa Grand.
Ok, so I don't have any double-ended brushes for this exact reason, but if by some chance, I just had to have one, I would go with something like this, this, or this. Not sure if any of those would actually work for you since you say you have a growing collection, but I thought they would be worth a mention.
Uniball Jetstream is the best writing pen I've used bar none.
http://www.amazon.com/Jetstream-Stick-Roller-Assorted-Colors/dp/B0004F7ILA
Been using it for years, never went bad on me. At $3 a pop it goes to show that you don't have to spend a fortune to get somethign outstanding.
Mont Blanc, Parker, Cross pens cost tons more but don't match its smoothness IMHO.
Yes it has refills http://www.amazon.com/Jetstream-Stick-Refills-Point-Black/dp/B001B09BMG
That is absolutely AMAZING. I'm so excited for you!
We all need help sometimes, you can't do it on your own.
Pens or highlighters are always appreciated, as they tend to go missing throughout my semester. /:
Update, ordered black jaybird run XT, as well as this neat pen from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FF8X6CJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks again! I'll be sure to post the updated EDC when they both arrive
If you mean unmodded, then Pentel RSVPs and the japanese Dr. Grip Shakers are the most common recommendations (look up Ease on youtube, he competed in the 2015 world tournament with the latter). I'm a huge fan of the Pentel Graphgear 1000 pencils, but they aren't particularly popular. There's also this one JEB guy, Onacler I think, who spins a [Stalogy Low Viscosity Oil Ballpoint Pen] (http://www.amazon.com/Nitoms-STALOGY-viscosity-ballpoint-S5110/dp/B00D7ZN52A).
It's honestly better to use a mod, though. Check out the mod FAQ in the sidebar
That looks 1) awesome, and 2) oddly like one of those multi-colored retractable pens if you take the top off. eg
If you want that box to be there before Christmas, better check with your shipping company when the last pick up date with guaranteed pre-Dec 25 delivery is. I checked today with LBC and for Metro Manila and Luzon, it's Oct 14. Mindanao and Visayas areas normally have an earlier cut off date.
Suggested items for your balikbayan box -- bath soap, corned beef, nutella, /u/ikitmikka's suggestion of trader joe's goodies would be good. My mom loves these zebra pens. I have a box right now just waiting for pick up and I have boxes of barilla spaghetti/penne/bowtie pasta in it. Not sure if your Pinoy Pamilya would want the same. I also have some of my old stuff in it -- bags and clothes that are still in good condition but I don't feel like using them anymore. Ask your wife, she'll know if the old stuff you have are ok. Keep in mind it's perpetually summer in the Philippines. Don't send snow boots and down jackets :)
edit: i suck at formatting
that nail polish stuff works like garbage when you're actually moving.
here's what i did:
These nubs
With this to hold it in place
on a string.
works great.
I'll begin:
Pen Pal Pen Holders - These suckers are awesome for our drive-through clip boards. Makes it look very professional and not as tacky as a string on a pen.
Crocs Yukon Sports Clog - Although crocs are pretty uggly, these look O.K. with khaki pants on and after 14 hours of work standing with no break, my feet still feel amazing at the end of my shift.

By far the best pen I have EVER written with is the Uni-Ball Jetstream. So incredibly smooth and comfortable, the first time I used one I literally looked it up and saved it to my Amazon profile so I would always be able to get them. I prefer 0.7 which it surprisingly not that thin but they also sell them in 1.0
Zebra T3 mini
fits perfectly in my OLPR Leather wallet when clipped in. For anyone interested, I have no idea how OLPR offer handmade leather goods of such high quality at such an affordable price, but they are definitely worth checking out.
these are the best that i've found: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Hi-Tec-C-Maica-Ballpoint-LHM180C3-12C/dp/B00N8LZBYS/ref=sr_1_2?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1458404315&sr=1-2&keywords=japanese+pens
very thin, no bleed through. really vibrant colors.
Mmm I DEFINITELY know what you mean. I can never write with just one sheet of paper; it needs to be lovingly padded underneath.
I've always loved the way papermate pens felt and how sleek they look. The retractable ones are the nicest in my opinion since I just LOVE making the clicking noise :3
For more novelty/aesthetic looking pens, I'd suggest the retro pens from Kikkerland, or the "Borrow My Pen" set from some other sort of seller. Knock Knock also has these funny pens that are very sturdy and on the inky side, but they come in certain phrases like "The Bitch Pen", "The WTF Pen", "Get Crap Done Pen", and "The Procrastination Pen", though the amazon seller doesn't seem to have it.
ALSO! Nice note pads/to do lists are a MUST in an office! Knock Knock has tons of neat-o looking ones. ;D
I bought this mixed set on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBHOTL4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but ended up preferring the "soft" type as it's more flowy. It turned out really pretty though! http://imgur.com/a/z6otH
I didn't know that existed... used the Super Black "Flat Black" instead.. it's not a good match which is why I covered most of the flare. This is what I used.. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JSAE0ZY I'm still looking for a better match in case I need to cover something more visible... Although so far I don't mind the dings/scratches I'm getting on My ARs or my suppressors. It just shows I use them.
It looks like this one to me:
Pilot The Better Retractable Ballpoint Pens, Fine Point, Black Ink

One more tip - many of the items on your Amazon list aren't Prime-eligible, which is identifiable by whether they have the blue "Prime" logo on them.
If an item doesn't have the Prime logo, try to replace it with one that does. People who get Amazon Prime get free shipping on those items, but others you have to pay for shipping.
For example, you've got some Bic pens for $.25 but they cost $5.28 for shipping. You can replace them with this which is a better deal overall.
These work pretty well: https://www.amazon.com/Birchwood-Casey-Super-Black-Touch-Up/dp/B00JSAE0ZY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496249224&sr=8-1&keywords=gun+black+pen
Chances are it's not going to be an exact match (but closer than a Sharpie and will last longer). If you use one, I'd suggest framing off the scratch/blemish as close as you can with tape.
https://www.amazon.com/Kikkerland-Retro-Pens-Multi-4308/dp/B002RMXKSS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1478326667&sr=8-6&keywords=Bic+clic
These are pretty nice.
Came here to say this exact thing.
I enjoy the .7mm pens over the 1.0mm and the capped pen over retractable. But I can't find a capped one that's in 0.7mm.
Edit: Never looked on Amazon. Found my favorite pen ever
Uniball Jetstream. BEST everyday pen I have ever owned.
http://www.amazon.com/uni-ball-Jetstream-Retractable-Roller-70877/dp/B002FSZP5A
This.
Maybe not. That was too snarky.
Things I always enjoy are small cheeses from local areas. Small, dumb nick-knacks from local places. Timber Village is good for that.
Shit, just pictures that have some background behind your friend (They grew up next to a specific, notable area or something. Get them a framed picture of that.)
Or are you looking for something more jokeish? If so, get the pen. :p
Edit: Lmao, guess people don't like jokes.
If you're adamant on getting a ballpoint, then I would go for the Uniball Jetstream. Unlike regular ballpoints, the Jetstream is extremely smooth and pleasurable to use. The price, although more expensive than a shitty Bic, is still pretty affordable.
If you're willing to break out of the ballpoints, I would suggest a Pilot G2 for a reliable and inexpensive gel pen. They write much better (smoother and with less pressure) than ballpoints and, being gels, put down a darker and much more vivid line.
THIS.
These are the best pens known to mankind. I may or may not have stolen a ton of them from my previous place of employment because they are so incredible.
I saw this post yesterday and thought, "wow they make beautiful pens." Unfortunately this isn't that model as they've been discontinued (and are now VERY expensive on ebay), but I believe this to be it's successor.
I absolutely love Zebra pens. In fact, all their 301s are phenomenal; mech pencils, colored pens, gels. Zebras are the only writing utensils I have bought in the past 4 years
Everything is well ground with a dremel. And you can see it but the edges are painted. A little more gloss than the powder coat, but it looks good in person.
The Uniball Jetstream is the best pen I've ever used. Mark it, dude.
Pens should be functional, rather than stylish. That said, plastic pens are mostly shitty, and metal pens do give an air of "I mean business."
This Zebra F-301 is apparently popular with police officers, since it has a metal body, and writes evenly. I enjoy it for my normal office job, and have gotten compliments on it before.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the most classic of Zebra pens, the F-301. You really can't go wrong with them. There is a 1.6mm bold refill if you want to go super bold. I prefer it because it feels much more smooth, but it last a lot less, unfortunately.
If you like it, you can upgrade to the F-701, which has a much more durable and heavy metal body.
The zebra surari with emulsion ink is a good choice too, check a review.
Bic pens are not bad, but I find them too thin and hate when the plastic cracks. The cap/clip is almost useless for me.
The papermate 100 RT looks more saturated to me (and writes more smoothly) than bics and is really inexpensive.
You could get something like a pen holder and attach it to the thing you use the stylus with most (assuming it doesn't have one built in).
Something like: https://www.amazon.com/Pen-Pal-Holders-Assorted-PENPAL-BP3/dp/B005HTU45U
Check this out man: Birchwood Casey Super Black Touch-Up Pen, Flat https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JSAE0ZY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_8DHfMoOi8c7Vw I did the same thing with my bolt release, and this stuff completely covered it.

Thank you for the contest! :D
The one I have was discontinued. The closest thing would be the Rotring Trio, but I also have one of those, and it's not quite as good. The multipen I have is the same design as the Rotring Rapid Pro line, which are all very good pens and pencils.
Hero of time pens
Nitoms Stalogy is a solid start. The Japanese dr grip pen is another good option. If you can’t get either of these an RSVP can be decent.

Thanks for the contest!
On the road I carry a black Uniball Jetstream or black Pilot G2 Mini when size is an issue. The Jetstream writes great and the Mini is small, but mostly they are cheap I will not be upset if I leave them behind. I don't carry a pencil, but if I did it would be a wood #2.
Jetstream RT is a gift from the gods.
http://www.amazon.com/uni-ball-Jetstream-Retractable-Roller-70877/dp/B002FSZP5A
These are on my under 5 list. 4.88 is probably the cheapest useful thing I have.
Zebra T3 mini ballpoint pen, they also have a mechanical pencil like it.

meet the true king of disposable pens
The finest point pens I have are these, the're a set of pens from pilot that are .3 mm, I really like them
May I present: The Space Pen.
>Writes at any angle, even in Zero Gravity. Simply the most versatile pen ever made.
I was gifted one for my b-day and my god is this the best pen ever. I use it every day at work. Write On!
Here is my item - a skull scarf.
Another good idea is to use one of those multicolor pens like this, especially for STEM courses so you can write each step of a problem in a different color (as many professors do).
Fellow lefty here - my favorite everyday writing pens are Uniball Jetstream 0.7. They are the only pens I have ever a) not lost and b) used up all they way. I'm obsessed.
ok

pen used by Onacler
I attached one of these things to my clipboard. Your solution might be better.
It is kinda hard to quantify, but I really think the clipboard has helped my tips.
I think it is a zebra brand. And it looks like the f-301. http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Retractable-Ballpoint-Pen-27110/dp/B001CRVUPE
Because they smear? I'm right-handed, so take this with a grain of salt, but I would recommend these pens as something that's fairly fine-point and writes very smoothly without being as "juicy" as those G2 pilot ones.
I like the Pilot "better" ballpoint; I'm also partial to the Zebra F-301.
How about a Rotring Rapid Pro ballpoint. It's slim and well built.
Uni-ball jetstream. I’m left handed and smearing ink is an issue. This pens ink dries very fast and writes well on paper, telemetry strips, and the smooth glossy front of the patients folder.
[Uni Ball Jet Stream](Uni-Ball Jetstream Retractable Ball Point Pens,0.7mm, Black Ink, 3-Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002FSZP5A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_H8VwCb32FQVR5)
Zebra makes a small pen. I think the model is T3.
E: They look to be close to the size you want, but probably not at the price you want since you want a few of them.
Thank you for your suggestion, I wasn't as clear as I should have been.
Im looking for something more along the lines of this Pen style
Yes, but maybe don't get the 5 pack.
Here's a pen version.
I know you said other than quick-drying ink, but I can't suggest the Uniball Jetstream RT highly enough, they're inexpensive and I've never had any problems with smudging with them.
https://www.amazon.com/Nitoms-STALOGY-viscosity-ballpoint-S5110/dp/B00D7ZN52A
Amazon or their official website is the only place I would buy from
https://www.amazon.com/Birchwood-Casey-Super-Black-Touch-Up/dp/B00JSAE0ZY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484408713&sr=8-2&keywords=birchwood+casey
I'm close with my Rotring 600 FP, 800 mechanical pencil, and ballpoint pen. I also have the semi-matching Rotring plastic stick eraser.
For when I need a pen I prefer the Uniball Jetstream RT. The 0.7 writes finer than you would think. The thickness is comparable to a 0.38mm Pilot G2 (what I used to use).
Couldn't she just get one of these?

I use one of these for math and econ. It makes drawing graphs (especially in econ) a lot clearer

I use different colors for different types of comments. I also use this a lot in research notes too.
Absolutely. I always have an uni-ball Jetstream RT pen on me.

pens because I'm in college and work at a customer service desk, and the pen-caper is so sneaky, I always need more pens
Boom.
Here's one in silver too. This is the one i have http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000WGDFPY/ref=s9_psimh_gw_d0_g229_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=mobile-1&pf_rd_r=0Z86ESJCRGTJZBNK36W9&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2068141862&pf_rd_i=mobile

Pilot Jetstream. It's very smooth, very fast writer, dries almost instantly. http://amzn.com/B002FSZP5A
I carry 2 in my bag at all times, for when my Lamy All-Star is not appropriate. :P
Which dangler clip is that on the knife?
You might like the Zebra T-3 (or T-5 with gold clip). It's the same writing quality as the Zebra F-series pens but extremely small. Not comfortable for extended writing and obviously it doesn't hold as much ink, but I shill for it a lot on this sub since the F-701 is so popular.
It gets stuck less.
Uni-Ball Jetstream Retractable Ball Point Pens,0.7mm, Black Ink, 3-Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002FSZP5A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.QmWDb2KFVBKB
They make really decent short and thin pens. And given this guy's tendencies, I tend to believe size is key point here.
EDIT: Oh no, see #29.
I've used this on the back of my device and haven't looked back: https://www.amazon.com/Pen-Pal-Holders-Assorted-PENPAL-BP3/dp/B005HTU45U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1506711048&sr=8-2&keywords=pen+pal+pen+holder
Unfortunately slightly too fat for the sides
Yeah they aren't great but they work fine for people who don't care for their pens.
For personal use I now use the [Uniballs Jetstream (3 for $9)] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002FSZP5A/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
My favorite for years was the [Pilot Dr. Grip Limited $6/1] (https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Retractable-Platinum-Metallic-36272/dp/B0000AQOA1/ref=pd_sim_229_17?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0000AQOA1&pd_rd_r=Y9VG2SEYTNGV8PHQKQV5&pd_rd_w=QGWBs&pd_rd_wg=nVAZ8&psc=1&refRID=Y9VG2SEYTNGV8PHQKQV5) but you will never ever get that back when you lend it out, and the refills seemed to be poor quality.
What is wrong with aluminum? I think our stem may be made with that.
Edit: The stem may actually be made with steel using this pen, but I'm not certain.
I actually change out the ink to my Uniball Jetsream Pens.
https://www.amazon.com/Uni-Ball-Jetstream-Retractable-Point-3-Count/dp/B002FSZP5A/
I keep the first empty "uni SXR-7" empty at my desk.
Add on item Blue Pens because my almost 9th grader is required to have them! It's pesky b/c they're only about $1, but you can't just buy them! lame.
