Oh! Oh! If you can't tell by my username, I can help here!

First of all, based on the $85 fee I'm assuming you're adopting adult cats? Thank you so much! Adult cats take forever to find their furever homes. If they're kittens THANK YOU for adopting them in pairs! It's more important than most people think! But no matter what, the one time fee means that you're choosing to adopt instead of supporting a breeder. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this! I foster kittens that are constantly coming and going, so I've gotten a pretty good list of cheap things that work well. Sorry in advance for the wall of text. If you need ANY help at all when it comes to anything cat related, please ask!

  • Food - Make sure you give them whatever the shelter gives them even if you plan on transitioning. It's important that you do it slowly. Here is a good article about how to do it. I highly recommend not going cheap here. If you spend money on one thing, a good diet is where to spend it on! I recommend grain free and/or limited ingredient diets, but I'm not a vet so I'd talk to yours about specifics.
    • Food bowl: You wouldn't think a little bowl would be so damn expensive, but it is. I have a dozen or so of these bowls for the kittens since I use many at a time, but I'd recommend starting out with 4 and see how you do there. Basically have 4 bowls (two to give to each cat for food, and an extra 2 for when the dirty bowls are in the wash). Almost any bowl will work, including the ones you have, but if you were thinking of buying one of those $73.12 bowls because you think your cat needs it and it has a silicone bottom, don't. They're a huge waste of money.
  • Litter/box: Skip all the weird stuff/scents to put in your litter box to get rid of the smell. Just get unscented litter and baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda on the bottom of the box, fill half your litter, sprinkle some more, fill the rest of your litter. You will also want 2 litter boxes at a minimum. The general rule of thumb is a box per cat + an extra one. As for litter box, I love this one, and here looks like a cheaper and similar version. As for litter, I HIGHLY recommend clumping because non clumping is a nightmare (we need to use it for very small kittens since they can ingest the clumping and it can hurt them). I use petco's bulk litter and love it. If you have one near you, you can pick up a big bin and refill it as needed for a lower price. Here is the big bag of it, but I think a refill on a 30lb thing is 10 dollars?
  • Scratcher: Cats need to scratch, and they'll do it if you provide them with a scratcher or if you provide them with your own furniture. I would recommend at least one of these for each cat, plus maybe a couple extra depending on how big your home is. I have these everywhere because of of my kitties loves using them as beds. Soft fluffy stuff? Not a chance. Hard cardboard? Now we're talking! He's weird, and one of your beauties may be too. This is the best value one I could find, but really any of them would work. I also like this one because it's bed shaped-ish so they can also lay in it.
  • Vet care: Every year you'll need to get vaccines and preferably a checkup for each one of your cats. I know petco recently started doing a clinic day where they JUST the vaccines for something like 40 bucks or something, but that doesn't come with a checkup which I would recommend. I would ask your shelter about low cost vet clinics in your area, I'm sure they would know! I can't find a link where you can put in your zip code and get a list or I would link it :(
  • Toys: This is probably the easiest category to overspend in so don't. There's a lot of fancy looking toys that are great, but your cat gets bored of them quickly and even the best ones will get destroyed. I highly recommend buying a few kinds of cheap toys and seeing what your cat likes. Then regularly replacing them so it's new and shiny! For toys that'll fit in a bag, I like to have a catnip bag that I put some catnip in with the toys. Every so often I'll take toys out of the bag and the cats lose their minds. If after they get bored they're still in good condition - back in the bag they go!
    • Sparkle balls: These become choking hazards really quick, but cats LOVE THEM. I just bought these and they seem to be holding up well. Just like the food, I wouldn't recommend going cheap on them. The good news though is that even the good ones are still pretty cheap! Your local pet store will usually have good quality ones of these as well. Just don't get those "100 sparkle balls for 2 dollars!" off amazon.
    • Multipack: I LOVE this pack because it has a little bit of everything to see what kitty likes. The only downside is that the tunnel is pretty small. That's perfect for my foster kittens, but not so much for an adult cat. If you get it and the tunnel is too small, donate it to your shelter! Something like this also gives you a cheap way to stock up on a variety of toys.
    • Cat Dancer: I buy these in bulk they're so amazing. The link I'm giving you currently has the price of $4.20, but on November 2nd another seller will have them back at stock for 2 bucks each. I wouldn't buy them at 4 dollars, but at 2 they're a steal. The company also has a thing where you can hook them onto your wall and cats will play with it while you're gone. I bought it but haven't set it up yet. Another thing I LOVE about this is that you can wrap them around something.
    • Fishing pole toy: I call all of these kinds of toys a fishing pole toy. It's essentially a stick with something dangling from it. Cats go CRAZY for them and this is a good and cheap one. I also stick the pole part in couch cushions or between the bed and box spring so it's dangling.
  • Cat tower: Honestly, some cats love them, some cats don't. I would eventually get a cat tower (at least one), but don't let it stop you from adopting! Your local pet store will have tons, but I've seen some very happy people who got a massive crazy one for cheap off amazon. I have 4 (3 for my cats, one for the kitten room) that all get very loved but I honestly have no idea where I got them from or I'd link it to you!

I totally agree with TheCatGuardian's post. We just adopted our first cat from a shelter and he is 8 months old, and honestly he's still a bit of a handful at times (but that should be expected with any new pet). Try to get one over a year, if not closer to 2 years, as ours is still learning how to play nice and not nipping our ankles to get attention. My husband has always had cats, but this was my first pet and we adopted because I've always wanted one. I did a ton of research and here's what I would suggest as far as supplies:

A high sided litter box with rim - to keep them from kicking litter around and the high walls help keep everything inside. I didn't waste the money on litter liners. They seem gimmicky to me.

Pooper Scooper - It's cheap and gets the job done. Nothing else needs to be said about it.

Stainless Steel Bowl(s) - This one gets good reviews and is the perfect size for their food. You can get two, one for wet and one for dry food. Though I got this one for dry and got a cute oval dish at walmart for ~$2 for his wet. Whatever you want.

Slightly larger bowl for water - Make sure they have plenty for fresh water. I give him new water in the AM and evening after work. I know a lot of people rave about water fountains...but honestly I didn't want to spend the money initially, and my kitty seems to be perfectly fine drinking from the bowl. It'd be worth it to see how your cat feels about the bowl...esp since they will be drinking from bowls at the shelter...they shouldn't be too picky. You can spoil them later on if you decide to, but definitely not necessary.

A safety collar - Make sure it is either a break-away or elastic to ensure the cat doesn't get strangled if it climbs and gets stuck on something and is hanging by its neck. I liked this one because it didn't have an annoying bell, though some like the bell to let you find your cat in the house. The collar also ensure that if the cat gets out anyone who finds him will know he belongs to someone and isn't just a feral cat that they can take for themselves.

Scratching Board - Simple and good reviews. Seems like it will last. You can also get one or two cardboard cheaper ones and see what they prefer to scratch on. My cat doesn't really scratch that much...he uses the scratching posts that are part of his cat tree.

Cat Perch - This is the one we got so he can look out the window. It seems like a good balance of expense and functionality...especially at first. The cat might not even like jumping up on things, so at least this is a safe buy since it's not that tall but still lets them get up off the floor.

Cat bed - This one is highly reviewed and really durable. It's machine washable and will last forever. I really love this bed.

Simple toys at first: Wand Toy, Jingle Balls, Ball Circle Thing, Little Catnip Critter. He also likes paper bags, toilet paper rolls, and his laser pointer. I highly recommend the laser pointer...ours is green.

Greenies Treats

As far as food, you want to ask what they feed at the shelter and get a bag of that at first even if you read online that it isn't "the best." We wanted to get our cat on a mainly wet food diet, so we left his shelter dry food out at night, and gave him half a can of wet food in the morning before work, and half a can at night beofre bed ~9PM, and took the dry food away while the wet food was out. We feed him Friskies Pate...it's actually pretty good for the price. People will get passionate about cat food. Honestly Friskies is fine for us now...they sell it in bulk at Sam's.

Litter - you want to use the kind they use at the shelter so they have comfort in that. You can switch later if you want.

You might also want to get nail clippers and a brush. Our cat is long haired and I like using a comb, but it's really up to you.

As far as gimmicks I would assume that if it seems like a luxury it probably isn't necessary. Cats are very happy with simple things. The vitals are what I listed...a bathroom, food and water (bowls), a few toys, somewhere to scratch, somewhere to get up off the floor, and a safety collar. The bed isn't absolutely vital, but it's nice for them to have somewhere that they feel secure and happy...even if they don't use it at first.

Indoor only life is fine for a cat. If you're getting an adult cat, they don't necessarily need the companionship of another cat as they're naturally solitary animals (the reason it's recommended to get more than one kitten is to have a "littermate" to learn from and play with). Indoor cats can live anywhere from 15-20 years depending.

It'd be a good idea to get a free-flowing water fountain to ensure the cat always has fresh water while you're away. I have a Drinkwell, myself. You could choose to get an automatic timed feeder to dispense food at regular intervals throughout the day as long as you have a consistent time to replace the food each day, something like this: Crestuff Automatic Feeder, or a slow feeder like this: Pioneer ceramic slow feeder which I'm presently using. Options like these ensure your cat has regular access to food and water without being allowed to overeat, which can result in vomiting.

If you're away that long, you really need to make sure you do dedicate some time to playing with your cat, especially because indoor cats are more dependent on interaction with you for mental and physical exercise. Toys like Da Bird are great, and if you can, set up a bird feeder or two in front of a good viewing area (I have some on my glass sliding door balcony) as "kitty TV". You'll also need scratching posts/corrugated cardboard scratchers and should get a pair of cat nail clippers and clip the front paws every two to three weeks to keep scratching non-destructive.

ETA: Cats sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, so it wouldn't be surprising if your cat simply adjusted to most of their napping while you're out, anyway. As long as they're getting attention and care every day and they're an adult cat already, they should be fine.

I have been summoned here to help represent Team Supersexy, and so I shall!

The best gift I ever received from anyone ever was a trip to Argentina for my birthday. My dad took me, and it was probably the most fun time I've ever spent with him. It was an absolutely incredible experience!

I shall summon /u/MedStudent14 because we always need more nice people at the cakeday party!

My doggy wants this bowl because she doesn't have a very sturdy one right now >.<

HAPPY CAKEDAY

Love, the cheesiest of cakes!

Some cats are CRAZY food-driven. I've got 4 cats, and 2-3 of them (depending on their mood at the time) are food-mad. And all but one definitely prefer their super expensive prescription dry food over wet food.

To make it less of a food-panic and introduce play, our vet recommended these to stop the scarfing. They work beautifully!!

That, and slo-bowls

And Puzzle Bowls

Keeps them all from scarfing it down so they eat slower, don't "scarf & barf", and it reduces desperation at the next meal time.

Good luck!

u/LakotaSilver · 3 pointsr/cats

Chronic vomiting in cats is not normal! It drives me insane when I hear that vets have told owners that nothing is wrong with their cat that pukes every day. You see any wild cats doing that, vet? Cats are essentially physiologically unchanged from their wild ancestors - they should not be puking out their guts.

Before we look into things - wet food should be a cat's only source of food. http://catinfo.org/ for all the reasons never to feed kibble again. No joke, no more kibble, not even "special magical prescription kibble the vet insists you have to buy". The reason - cats are descended from desert critters who have a low thirst drive. They are designed to get their "moisture needs" from their prey - namely, meat. Kibble is a completely unnatural food for them (and it doesn't "clean their teeth" like some people will tell you!) When we feed them dry food, we literally force our cats into a state of constant dehydration. My cat ate kibble for the first 14 years of her life - I didn't know any better then. Then she was diagnosed with kidney failure - she had lost over 75% of her kidney function and was not expected to live another 6 months. I switched her to an all-canned diet immediately and eventually to a fully-raw diet, and she is still happy and healthy four years later at age 18! She loves her raw food and has the appetite and energy of a cat a third her age.

So I am a huge proponent of canned food diets for cats. ESPECIALLY males - Dr. Pierson's site above goes into some of the horrible urinary tract problems male cats can develop when they are on kibble.

So - we have to start at the beginning to help your little guy. When does he vomit? Does he vomit IMMEDIATELY after eating, or some time later? Does he puke white foam, green foam, or partially-digested food? Have you offered him "cat grass"?

http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=2809 - helps you determine whether your cat is vomiting vs. regurgitating.

This site has a chart that may help: http://www.vin.com/apputil/content/defaultadv1.aspx?meta=Generic&pId=11343&id=5124222

And this is an excellent paper/info packet on feline vomiting except for their recommendations on completely inappropriate kibble diets:

http://www.cliniciansbrief.com/sites/default/files/attachments/Vomiting%20Cat%20Cases.pdf

Basically what we're getting at is, your cat's problem could be as simple as excess stomach acid. You can literally give a cat Pepcid - in a much smaller dose - for the same reasons a human would be using Pepcid. I'm going to link you to Tanya's CRF site, which is a site for kitties with chronic kidney failure (like mine), but the medication/vomiting info might still be helpful:

http://www.felinecrf.org/nausea_vomiting_stomach_acid.htm#acid_blockers

I wouldn't necessarily jump into medicating your little guy with Pepcid off the bat - though it probably won't hurt him - without discussing it with a vet first.

Some of the treatments I'd start out with -

-Raise his food dish. Either get an elevated food dish such as https://www.amazon.com/Necoichi-Raised-Cat-Food-Bowl/dp/B00KAV98ES/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1480926103&sr=8-2&keywords=elevated+cat+food+bowl or https://www.amazon.com/Bowl-Food-Water-Elevated-Stand/dp/B01K5MH5VY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1480926092&sr=8-3&keywords=elevated+cat+food+dish - this can help a TREMENDOUS amount.

-Feed him small portions more often (schedule permitting). For example, if you usually put the whole can of cat food in his dish at once, put only 1/4 of the can. Let him eat it all and wait 10 minutes. See if he vomits. If he doesn't, you can offer another 1/4 of the cat. Space out the meal if you can, or feed him small portions throughout the day. He'll need some adjustment time as he will feel as though he is "starving to death" in the meantime, but this can help if he's overeating or eating too fast and vomiting because of that.

-As someone else mentioned, try a truly "limited ingredient" canned food such as Natural Balance, or try freeze-dried raw food or frozen raw. My cat is on a fully-raw diet, and although it IS expensive, it is literally a miracle. I have a friend in Arizona whose cat was a chronic puker, plus had chronic diarrhea, before switching to a raw diet.

I know I tossed a lot of info at you at once - my apologies! But your kitty's case definitely isn't hopeless and you shouldn't have to be resigned to cleaning up vomit for the rest of his life.

No worries and yeah my older one has gone through upper resp. infection twice now. And the tips I listed is what I do too. Random question but do you use a water fountain for water access for your cats? If not I would recommend one for your kitty and this is the food bowl I use for my two and the bowls are easy to clean :) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002A2NCH4/ref=twister_B003JBIULI?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and sorry for so much info thrown at you.

My little peke-faced rescue kitty has a tough time getting food in her mouth, but not on the floor. This bowl has an inside lip that helps keep the food mostly in the bowl and it’s elevated for easier digestion. https://www.amazon.com/Necoichi-Raised-Cat-Food-Bowl/dp/B00KAV98ES/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=elevated+cat+bowls&qid=1573588804&sprefix=elevated+cat&sr=8-3

u/Sarabi5890 · 3 pointsr/Greyhounds

I have this a bowl that clips right onto the crate to keep it from tipping over (http://www.amazon.com/Kennel-Gear-Plastic-Dog-Bowl-Blue/dp/B002GWVERI/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1406939939&sr=8-7&keywords=dog+crate+bowl). I use an old ice cube tray to freeze peanut butter treats as well. Do you have a fan you could aim at him during the day? Marmet loves to lay in front of mine.

u/AstridDragon · 3 pointsr/Pets

Something like this is good for kitties who eat too fast as well, but less cheap than your idea, good job!

u/mumblejumblebawls · 1 pointr/ferrets

Male or female is just a personal preference. Males are a noticeable size bigger than females.

Assuming you're in the US, most would already be descented and fixed (if you're getting one from petco or a retailer, it'll probably be a Marshall's Farm ferret).

People normally recommend heavy ceramic bowls for food and water. I use this. Removable bowls and a stable base. It may be moved around in the cage, but it won't flip over. I tried leaving water in the bowl, but my furslut enjoys digging up all the water, so she now uses the bottle.

If you've got a few rooms for your ferret to explore through, you might consider getting a couple litterboxes.

u/plepperjam · 5 pointsr/RATS

Tip!
Find either a ceramic cat or dog bowl to put the litter in. They can’t flip or chew it.
Put their poops they’ve already made inside it. Every morning and night (at the very least) go to the cage and pick up the poops and put it in the litter.

My ratties did this too and then ended up chewing it to pieces. Haha

This is literally the one I started with. I have the critter nation cage and I had purchased two, one for each section.

I have the same food bowl for my cat. The little paw prints and says 'Happy Dining' on it. Almost nauseatingly cute for a food bowl.

u/squidboots · 1 pointr/TryingForABaby

Phew! Glad that's all it is.

If she has to go on a diet with dry food (kitty crackers as we call 'em around my house) we have been using this interactive feeder in our house for the past few months with great success. Crackers go in every morning, and they have to fish 'em out with their paws and drag them onto the floor to eat. It slows them down and makes sure they aren't eating out of boredom. Both of our pudgy cats have been losing weight with it - one is back to normal weight, and the other (who has a little more to lose) is still losing.

We tried a couple of automatic feeders for our 2 cats but they never worked reliably.

then we went low tech.

Cat are finicky about water and prefer running/flowing water over standing one. You can look at getting a cat water fountain.

Catit Flower fountain is available for under 25 bucks, but if you are concerned about the cat playing with that, you can get a ceramic model. They would not tip over.

You can also look at something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JHTKQNK

u/gaycryptid · 166 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

YTA - Cat's are not dogs. They are finicky eaters. They prefer to be fed in situations that are familiar and comfortable to them. If they do not want to eat off the floor because it is uncomfortable to them and you're just waiting it out then you're pulling a trick that most people don't even do with kids anymore to cats that understand it even less.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Don't free feed. Cats can over eat if free fed. Feed the recommended amount by halves twice a day or all at once one time a day on a set schedule and try not to deviate. (Side Note: If you do this and you find one or both of you cat gobbles it too fast then there are a ton of active feeders that slow down feeding and also really entertains them. This is my favorite. I just use it to feed my cat treats some times.)
  2. Use a mat like this one. It collects any dropped food and you can just fold it up and funnel it back in the bowls.
  3. Order whisker stress free bowls. Your cats are more likely to eat all of their food though it will increase push out food but the mat will decrease your stress there.
u/meriqa · 1 pointr/Truckers

get a spillproof water bowl they are awesome. We never had any spills unless I overfilled it.

u/Smith2991 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I recently found a puppy water/food dish at a pet store called MudBay. The bowl is shallow, about 1-1/2" and has sloped sides - about 6" wide at the top and 5" wide at the bottom. It has very mild concentric circle ridges on the bottom. it is also thick ceramic about 3/8" thick. I soak it in hot water while showering and it retains heat through the shave. I think it was only $8, which is good because I'll break it soon.
EDIT: Found a picture.. When I break it I'll try an oval shaped one.

I wasn’t sure how to link this, but the link is an example of a non-skid, non-tip dog bowl. My thought is get a large dog size bowl like this and it will be too heavy for the cat to flip it over.

It's never easy. I think you just have to remember that she's lucky to be so loved and few bunnies get a forever home for one year, let alone 9.

Things that have helped our old man with his moulting is giving him lots and lots and lots of greens. They keep his guts hydrated and full of fiber to help push the fur through. In addition to his regular evening salad (which is about as big as he is) we give him a bunch of mint in the morning (1-2 cups) and leave a head of romaine in his pen for him to eat whenever. We brush him at least every other day with a rubber mit too until the mit comes away clean. We also got a bowl that filters his water and makes water noises because he can't see too well and the noise helps him find it and reminds him to drink when he isn't thinking about it. He also likes to rest with his front half up on a pillow, you can roll up some t-shirts and make a stack 2-3 inches thick for her. I think it takes some of the pressure off his arthritic hips and knees. If Momo is arthritic, cetyl-M/myristol has been really helpful. I got some from a friend who has a horse, but if you want I can send you some when I get a tub. It'll go bad before he can eat it all.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0033PR7FA/ this is what you want. It won't stop the dog from sticking their feet in, but it certainly reduces how much water gets splashed on the floor.

I think it would work just fine. There are bowls like this that might work too. Depends on what each one costs and which one you prefer more.

Can I highly recommend this bowl? It helps them eat slower so they stay fuller longer. Really helped my chonk Wallace lose the weight!

Maybe try one of these. Might filter out the bugs and cats like to drink moving water more anyways.

>Pioneer Pet Tiger Diner Ceramic Food Dish/Bowl, Black

>The number one problem with most food dishes is that they allow cats to eat too much. The Tiger Diner fixes all that with a design that challenges cats to fetch out their own food. They will eat only as much as they need, so there's less waste and less overeating. The Tiger Diner also helps aid in digestion and stop stomach upsets due to eating too fast.

It's a food dish that they need to dig their food out. Keeps them from gorging themselves as soon as food is put out, and is supposed to "[satisfy] your cats need to hunt and play".

EDIT: did vs. dig

In that case, you could try a portion control bowl (they have to fish each piece of kibble out of it with a paw, slowing down the rate at which they can eat). If Hercules isn't the brightest, it should keep him occupied for hours.

I used the Tigerdiner bowl for our cat - she decided to be a moron one day and ate so fast that she would throw up. Every. Single. Day.

It works fairly well for our situation, here is where we got it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007DOS9C2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_R-30BbWB7XXYN

Oh, sure! It's one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Tiger-Diner-Ceramic/dp/B007DOS9C2/ref=pd_sbs_petsupplies_1

The one I bought is plastic, though, and my cat is strong enough and smart enough that sometimes he doesn't want to wait and sticks an arm in the hole, lifts, and dumps the whole thing over. I think the ceramic one is heavier and less prone to that sort of behavior. They also make one with a lip on the base so there is less mess, but I corral my cat's mess by keeping the bowl inside an old cookie sheet so the kibble doesn't get everywhere.

I switched to this food bowl after my cat kept scarfing & puking his food. He has to fish out each piece of kibble with his paw so he can't inhale the entire bowl at once.

I had a similar issue with my boy. I tried the ball in the bowl, I tried a slow feed bowl, I tried wet food, I tried an automatic feeder. Nothing seemed to work until I found this puzzle bowl: Pioneer Pet Tiger Diner Ceramic Food Dish/Bowl, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007DOS9C2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EahqDbACC3B8H

They have to stick their paws in the holes and can only get out a few pieces at a time. It's seriously been amazing. He rarely ever throws up now from eating too fast. It is a bit pricey, but it's worth not having to clean up puke constantly.

My cats used to snack throughout the day and then suddenly one of them was gorging herself and puking. To slow Little Miss Piggy down we bought this upside down bowl thing with holes around the edges. Mine is plastic and has a little cover so we just dump dry food in the top and they have to pull each piece out one at a time. The piggy one complained that it was some sort of torture device, but she figured it out. Sometimes they'll scoot it across the floor a bit, but they've never tipped it over.

We free-feed our cats and one was eating too much and making herself sick. We got her one of these which just slows her down - she's not eating as much, has lost weight and stopped being sick so often.
