I obviously don't know you or your SO, but I wanted to let you know that even with minimal disability from my MS, I still find the talk toilets and grab bars absolutely useful. I was actually shocked at how useful they were, because I'm not in any terrible state where you'd think I'd actually need them. Specifically the taller toilet, and the double bar that can be pushed up and out of the way, are super useful.

Your grandma is using the towel rack to balance herself getting out of the shower or to help her while hoisting herself up off of the toilet. I had the same problem where I repaired the towel rack once and she just pulled it out of the wall again.

The more permanent solution is to install a grab bar mounted to wall studs, and to use the grab bar as a towel rack.

You will want to get a studfinder (a simple one with magnets that finds the large nailheads in the studs will suffice) and a 16" or 32" grab bar. The grab bar gets screwed into the studs (which live in the wall and are 16" apart). The grab bar is now your new towel rack. It has the added benefit of letting her balance herself and support her entire weight without issue.

Products I recently installed in my grandma's bathroom:
32" grab bar &
Toilet Safety Rail

Patch the holes from the existing towel bar with spackling compound and a spackling blade, sand flat after it dries, and mount the new grab bar into the studs. Good luck!

Edit: Adding a shopping list:

  • stud finder
  • spackling compound
  • spackling knife
  • 16" or 32" grab bar, whichever is more appropriate for the space
  • pack of drywall sandpaper
  • optional: toilet safety rail

Wow, thank you! This is a great idea. I have been slowly moving forward with an office like this and had been thinking about these two as a way to possibly mount the monitors.

I can't think of anything designed to go with a closed door hinge. However, if you have a smooth metal door, can you use a portable handicap suction mounted handgrip stuck to the door? Just an idea to consider.

The only other thing I can think of is to see if they'll allow the installation of a support grip just outside the door that's short like this as long as you bought it and agreed to pay for the install, (as well as the removal when you leave - I think that's required when the modification is reversible), unless you get a waiver in writing, of course, before moving.

The only other thought I have is to use a retractible leash for your keys that you can attach to your clothing, or bag, like this so that your keys are not attached to your cane for the purpose of getting indoors. I'd say, use the key leash, hook to your belt or bag strap, and do it that way.

Look for it in your local sex shop ( and I even found those on amazon - just google "sex shower suction" ).

Also - for less expensive versions, you don't have to search for specifically sex stuff:

Just make sure beforehand that it sticks strong enough.

Something like this requires no drilling. There are nicer/heavier duty/ more expensive ones out there. It may be nice since the knee issue is temporary.

If your ceilings aren't too high, you can use something like this (not that actual one, way to pricey), and use a clamp that grabs onto the pole, and ends in a 1/4 20 to screw the base station on to.

Might a grab bar be solid enough to work with a clamp?

No,but there’s more. Searching for 41818 on Google I found this https://www.amazon.com/Faucet-41818-18-Inch-Contemporary-Polished/dp/B00I2HHGVE

Okay...so this is a bit of center, and perhaps not the solution you may be looking for. However what about philips hue bulbs. It's totally overkill, however it gets you around having to run an extra wire. http://www.meethue.com/en-US

You can get this or something similar to control your lights if they are the regular screw in lamp base type.
