I have some first-hand experience sleeping on something similar.
I wanted a bed that looks/functions like OP's (held together by friction and gravity, easy to take apart and move), but lack the woodworking skills to make one like I wanted.
----
Saw an ad on craigslist where the guy was selling a dresser, but had a frame that looked like the one I wanted in his room. Sent him an e-mail asking where he got it. Said he made it. Woo Hoo! Asked if he would be willing to make another, and what my cost would be. He quoted me $150 in lumber, $150 in labor, would have to use screws. I said, "yup!"
Went to get it and it looked okay. Wish he'd picked a bit better lumber (couple-a-flaws), but okay. It has 2x6s as the side support beams, 4x4s as the legs, five 2x4 supports running along the inside as weight supports, and a couple pieces of plywood on top for the mattress to rest on. (I live in a dry/arid area: our mattresses don't get moldy on a flat surface.) All this stuff is just screwed together. King-sized bed.
He said: "You're not going to be doing circus acts on it, are you?" Well, duh. That's what beds are for, right? But anyway, it's all good. It was the aesthetic I was looking for, and I thought it'd be sturdy enough.
____
So I get it home and screw it together. Okay. I sleep on it. Okay. I ask some friends to try it out. Too wobbly, they say. Bad design. So I trotted over to home depot and got eight, 4" metal L brackets to screw each side support to each leg on each side. Much sturdier. Okay.
Slept on for about 3 years. Okay! Love the aesthetic. Had it specially made 18" clearance from floor. Love the height.
Getting off one morning, one of the side pieces snaps in half. There was a knot in that piece of wood that gave way.
Boooo!
-------------------------
So, in seeing where it broke, I can see a fix. First, use great lumber. But also: the five 2x4s that are the weight support are just screwed into the 2x6s. What would've worked hella better is to do that if needed, but also make a rail below for them to rest on that's attached to the 2x6. Exponentially increases the strength of the 2x6 and better distributes the weight along it.
----------------------------
It broke a few months ago. It's on my list of stuff to do: shore-up bed. But in the meanwhile, I got this metal frame off amazon... it was SUPER easy to unfold and slide under, and gives the poor, sagging frame the support to get by until I can fix it.
I hate the aesthetics of the new frame, but it was a great price and SO easy to set up, so light-weight to move. Glad I got it, as it will store well (if I ever get around to fixing my bedframe) and is super easy to move/drag out... great port-a-bed.
tldr: My experience with a similar-but-different bed design is that it's not really sturdy enough.
Alright my man. Since you have such a low budget ($700) but don't want your apartment to look like crap, your best bet is going to be minimalism. You're in a great sub for minimalist inspiration. Take this recent post, for example. Not everyone was super impressed, but I'd say he did pretty good for a budget of $195. At the very least we can say with 100% certainty that it looks better than the average undergrad apartment.
I took the liberty of checking out the Halifax craigslist offerings and they are far and few between. However, I did find a potentially decent desk: see here. You might be able to haggle down the price a little with some luck. Otherwise, you might want to look at Amazon for desks (example 1 and example 2). For a desk chair, you could look at Amazon, but you might be better off going somewhere local (even if you go to Walmart) because you want to make sure a desk chair is going to be comfortable.
For a mattress, I'd again suggest Amazon. I'm just not sure you're going to find any better deals than what they have to offer. Mattress buying also involves a lot of personal preference, but "big box" mattress stores are incredibly overpriced. It seems that memory foam mattresses (such as this) are the most inexpensive, so I would look around Amazon to see what you think you'll like. I think I saw a mattress for as little as $99.^(though personally, I'm not sure I'd trust it...) Keep in mind that you will either need (a) a box spring and bed frame or (b) a platform bed in addition to the mattress. With your budget, a platform bed will probably be your best bet. You can even get one with a "headboard" for pretty cheap (the headboard will definitely up your apartment's style a little bit and keep it further away from "garbage apartment of undergrad" level): see here and here.
Alright, I'll break down what we've done so far. I'm in the US and don't know that much about Canadian dollars, so I'm doing this in USD - hopefully it's close:
That leaves you around $150 for other items. I assume you have basic human needs covered (bed sheets-do not sleep on a bare mattress!- and towels), so you could use this money for more furniture or for decor. I would probably try get some attractive and functional bedding (please do not get anything polyester!) in a minimalist pattern. Ikea is really unbeatable for this - see here and here. For a couch, I would either consider Amazon or start scouring Craigslist every day. I would probably forego a coffee table until you have other things that will improve your quality of life (dining chair/table, television, etc.); you really don't need one.
Anyway, these are just a couple of suggestions. Hope this helps!
I just got a queen Zinus "Green Tea" memory foam bed. Currently $289 shipped on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI/
It is pretty firm. I actually ordered a 3" gel topper because of the firmness (you sleep on top rather than sinking into it), but that proved to be too squishy (the topper leaves an imprint of your body when you roll). I have a 2" topper on another bed & imo that is the right level of squish vs. firmness: (the bed is firm to the point where my side wasn't sinking in & was kind of being compressed instead, like when you lay on thin carpet when watching TV or something)
https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Master-Memory-Topper-Queen/dp/B00FJNQBJ2/
Also, I picked up their awesome 18" tall frame:
https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-SmartBase-Foundation-Replacement-Noise-Free/dp/B017YETH8K/
TONS of storage space underneath, easy to setup (2 pieces that screw together & fold in half, lightweight & only requires one person to assemble...literally takes more time to unbox it than put it together), no noise in use, plus with the 12" Zinus bed, it's at a good height to walk up to & fall into bed. You will need a grip sheet underneath, otherwise the bed will slide off pretty easily:
https://www.amazon.com/TRU-Lite-Bedding-Slip-Mattress/dp/B01AS3HADS
I also recommend getting a waterproof sheet (goes underneath the regular sheets), as any spills will sink directly into the foam mattress & never, ever come out:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A2G9VFM/
I got these Mellanni sheets - they are thin, but feel nice:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NLNDU00
Slightly better than the Amazon Basics sheets I have on another bed. I have a plastic bin underneath the bed for storing a spare set of sheets & waterproof sheet (both are washer/dryer-safe). Total comes up to under $600 shipped for a 12" memory foam bed, 2" gel topper, 18" metal bed frame, a non-skid pad for the frame, two sets of sheets, and two waterproof mattress sheets. I was going to get a Casper or Leesa, but those were like $800 just for the bed...I got all that for $200 less, still a pretty hefty investment, but a decent deal. Other than that, you just need some pillows & a duvet or blanket on the top.
The mattress comes vacuum-sealed in a box, so you just undo it from the packaging & let it air out for a day or two to fully decompress. The frame comes in a large but thin box (two frames folded in half with some assembly hardware). I didn't have to mooch a truck off a friend or go to a mattress store or anything...ordered it all off Amazon Prime, showed up in a couple days, put it all together by myself in minutes. Easy peasy. Would definitely order another one!
In terms of affordability it really is hard to go wrong with online. There are several great options to purchase inexpensive, but super high quality mattresses online.
I just bought a mattress online myself, ended up going with the Leesa. But here are all of the choices I looked at:
Leesa - $890 for queen, neutral firmness, uses Avena foam (similar, but better than latex), has memory foam middle layer, cool design, great price (really cool company too, they give back lots of the community)
Casper - $840 for queen, supposed to be a bit softer then the Leesa, uses latex and memory foam
Tuft & Needle - $600 for queen, one of the cheapest options I found, but also seems to be firmer. If you like firmer could be a good fit.
Yogabed - $899 for queen, similar to the Leesa in may ways, has some cool extras, a few unknowns in terms of the foams they use though
Saatva - $899 for queen, the one online innerspring mattress I found, great option if you really want innerspring. Has a euro-style pillow top, not sure how that would feel though.
Nature's Sleep - ranging prices $800-$1300 for a queen, a more traditional retailer, but had some interesting stuff, especially if you're looking 100% memory foam
For your frame there are a few different options. My wife and I had a platform bed already, so that's what we are using. It was around $600.
IKEA is always an option for cheap with a pretty good number of options. Also, there is this metal box spring / frame option available on Amazon. Hard to beat the price on that.
Use the fueleconomy.gov/trip/ trip calculator to see about how much you'll spend on fuel.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the most visited national park in the U.S. Be aware traffic will increase around the peak of fall foliage. It's worth experiencing even for a very short drive. Early in the morning you might have certain areas all to your self. Asheville is a cool town if you've never been.
IMO, the most comfortable tent is an 11' hammock tent. You'll want tree straps, an under-quilt (or camping pad), bug net, and tarp (can be $20 box store heavy duty tarp if you want). Generally speaking Ozark Trail/Walmart camping products are good bang for buck. A tarp may be the only way to keep any tent dry during heavy rain. Backpacking gear doesn't take up as much space. A lot of folks like their JetBoil. I have a cheap PocketRocket knock off and a lot of people are happy with their Etekcity stoves.
Don't keep food or food trash in your car or make sure it's in an air tight sealed container.
Stealth/private camping vehicle ideas:
Tri-fold mattress, blackout curtain, 35% or state legal tint, Rain Guard and ShadeSox (bug/privacy screen), and optional hyper-insulated custom window covers. Avoid covering the driver and front passenger side windows, not as stealthy. Only use a windshield sun shield in the summer. This isn't too terribly similar, but has some similar qualities: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WWF1P78/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got this bed for our guest room and it looks really great imo. Maybe you can look for something similar but in the light ash? Good luck!
Maybe? This is the one I want to get. But I'm sure there are a bunch of other types on amazon. Watch the video! It's great. :)
Oh gosh, yeah I wouldn't either. The East Coast has been getting some awful weather lately!
Congrats on your new place though! Its exciting to live alone. This is my second year on my own and it's been an adjustment for sure! Exciting, but hard. And expensive. lol
I recently bought a new bed, and I looked through this site to determine what would be best. I ended up going with a latex mattress. I'm pretty satisfied with it. The frame depends on what type of mattress you're getting. You'll probably want a frame and box spring for an innerspring mattress, but everything else just needs a foundation. Also, be sure to get a waterproof mattress cover to protect your mattress.

P.S., buy at least a queen if you're going to have another person in your bed. A double will be pretty cramped.

Not exactly the same but we got this one last year and it looks and feels great. We’ve a hybrid firm mattress on top. Combined weight between us two about 350. Honestly cannot recommend it enough.
After beginning to measure my 4th gen for a sleeping platform I realized I recognized the measurements... Because they were the size of a twin bed! On a wim I ordered this from amazon for $40 in twin size. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006MIPW70/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It fits perfectly with plenty of storage space underneath! I did cut the last 3 inches or so off one side until the horizontal support bar so all the legs would fit on the seat backs. Super easy with a tiny hacksaw and even easier with a dremel. There is 14in of storage underneath currently, however I will also be cutting down the legs to allow for more headroom. This is a great option for someone lacking woodworking skills or time! I put an exped megamat duo on mine, but it will obviously fit a twin foam or air mattress.
>Is there from type of frame I can ensemble in my room?
I had a bed that sat on something like this at one point in time. It was pretty nice, but then again, it also had a box spring. So, YMMV.
I also bought one of those memory foam mattress toppers recently and it's pretty much the best thing ever.
haha I was expecting that question: The power went out from the storms that rolled through DC a few weeks ago and my room is in the basement so my roommates pretty much moved down there to stay cool while I was at the beach.
http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-10-inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B003CT37JM/ref=pd_sim_hg_1
That is the one I got and I love it, same issues other people said like heat retention and not much bounce back for sexy times, but if you sleep on your side it is amazingly comfortable.
Yeah, mobile homes are friggin expensive. Sounds good, take care of that van like it's your life blood. Keep the tires inflated so they don't wear out quickly. Check/change the transmission fluid, rear diff fluid, and coolant if you don't know when it was done last. Most people skimp on this.
I'd recommend getting a pistol or a taser pulse and some FOX brand pepper spray just so you don't have to worry about anything. I tell this to everyone, male or female. Things that everyone should have close by in my opinion. I'd avoid making the van look girly on the inside (no pink or purple curtains) for security reasons)
For the van, if you plan on living with him in there, you're going to need a big sturdy bed. I would buy a metal frame so that you have storage space underneath. Like this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006MIPW70/?tag=dazar-20
I wouldn't worry about much of a build because I would imagine there won't be much space left over after a bed, just keep it simple. All you really need is a bed, a sink, a bucket lined with trash bags, a cooler. To pee in, an apple juice container and this, then go out and fertilize those trees :D

Costco is a good option. If you want to try something new I got this memory foam off amazon and am so happy with it! (this is the other popular brand they carry). I work as a server and having this mattress helps my back a lot. Check out the reviews for memory foam on amazon and see if it's right for you. They're cheaper than the cheapest of a regular mattress and in my opinion better than any other mattress I've slept on. Highly recommended.
If you really want to go cheap though, find one on craigslist. If you end up going to a store $400-$500 for a regular mattress isn't a bad price. Might have to go to a few stores and haggle to find this price.

I feel as if I am a pretty light weight person that I don't even sink into my memory foam or even my 4" topper. It is definitely memory foam, both the mattress and the toper. the topper is like this http://www.samsclub.com/sams/4in-topper-twin-dreamfinity/prod14480238.ip?xid=plp:product:1:1 and the cover is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EFBD0ZW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and the mattress itself is this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005A4OQ9W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
the room definitely isn't cold so i dont think that is causing the issue. i just want to feel like I sink into the bed more, it all feels very firm to me.
You can do better than you think!
Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress, King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7EPV8O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tsDdAbAA4MDEK
Quite possibly the best value I've ever enjoyed, no joke.
Look into the Tuft & Needle mattresses. They're CRAZY comfortable and super affordable. My husband did a ton of research and used Consumer Reports and this is one of the highest rated mattresses they tested. We got ours right around when I got my BFP and I love it to pieces. The cool thing is they vacuum seal it in plastic and ship it to your house for free (in the US at least), so you don't have to worry about delivery or anything. And you don't need to use a box spring with it, so you can get a tall bed frame and have all this storage underneath. I seriously can't recommend this mattress enough.
I got a nice, queen size memory foam mattress for 200 dollars off Amazon. I love it
It was over a year ago, im pretty sure this one is it. It's about 30 dollars more than what i paid though http://www.amazon.com/Signature-Sleep-8-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B005A4ON90/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1375058548&sr=8-8&keywords=memory+foam+mattress+queen
I suggest this bed frame I picked one up recently absolutely love it.

Here is a great mattress.

https://www.amazon.com/Full-Size-Fold-Bed-Compact/dp/B001IPVWG2
I got this one 2 years ago and it's still working wonderfully. They changed the shipping price on it though and $48 for shipping is shit. But it is a great little bed frame and folds up super nice in case you have to move.
Also certian... activities will not damage the floor with this one. ;p
I bought this mattress a month and a half ago and I love it! It's super comfortable.
This is the most amazing mattress you can get.
It's only $270, and I sleep so well that getting up is really hard. A friend recommended it, and it's perfect.
Check out this mattress. Fits perfectly in an xtetta with the seats down and the action packer. And it's super comfortable. It does take up about as much room as a cooler
Mine was pretty pricey. I bought this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0092UCN0Y
You can definitely find cheaper ones though, like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/LUCID-Inch-Plush-Memory-Mattress/dp/B0088YV7XY
I know you want to be able to move things easily and for free, and I was in the exact same boat, but seriously... the $50 you'd pay someone to move your bed for you will be worth it compared to sleeping on a futon pad. A nice thick memory foam mattress is so, so, so very worth it.
EDIT: This one's only $220 : https://www.amazon.com/LUCID-Inch-Memory-Foam-Mattress/dp/B00474X5DO/ref=sr_1_7?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1481050459&sr=1-7&keywords=memory+foam+mattress
I was rather surprised how comfortable mine is. It has certainly been better than the mattress it replaces.
FYI, one of the reasons that memory foam mattresses can be so cheap is that they ship compressed into a roll about 16 inches in diameter.
Example mattress
I was going to buy one of the more expensive branded foam mattresses, but my back went out and we needed a new bed now. We bought a cheap queen size this one on Amazon for less than $300. It's been almost 5 years and the bed is still wonderful.
My back just started acting up again, but it appears to be a pinched nerve this time. Pretty sure the bed isn't at fault.
We had a pillow top queen (major name brand, maybe Sealy? Can't quite recall) for 5 years. When we moved, we decided to upgrade our furniture and get a king sized bed. Because we had spent $$$$$ on the down payment, other furniture, etc. we decided to try out a cheap memory foam mattress from Amazon as a "filler" piece until we could save up and comfortably afford a more expensive mattress.
You'd have to pry this mattress out of my cold, dead hands. We have no intention of giving it up/upgrading at this point, because there's nothing to upgrade. I sleep like a baby. My husband sleeps like a baby. We used to wake up with slight back pain/aches - no more. I can toss and turn all I want, and he can't feel a thing. It's been amazing.
I just bought this memory foam mattress off Amazon a couple weeks ago and I love it; $189 shipped to your door. It's pretty cool how it's packaged and shipped; rolled up and vacuum sealed. Can watch the video to see.

If you like memory foam, then this is your best bet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
This is a little bit steeper, but I think it looks great and is still cheap compared to a lot of bed frames: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W4DCTK0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
Not OP, but this is the on I've seen most recommend. There are ones with different heights, but I saw someone suggest getting at least 4-inch thick one for sleeping comfortably. Just make sure to choose the Twin size for Model 3.
Amazon, much cheaper (like half the price or less of other bed-in-a-box stores) and have great reviews.
Got mine on sale and it's great! https://www.amazon.ca/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00Q7EPFT4?th=1
I have this mattress from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/DreamFoam-Mattress-Ultimate-Dreams-13-Inch/dp/B0092UCN0Y I've had it 5 months so far after I tested TempurPedics at Denver Mattress Company in Draper and you'd never be able to tell the difference (except for the price tag) glorious, glorious memory foam
I have the 10" Sleep Innovations mattress from amazon. It has been well over a year now and it is amazing. No need to buy a boxspring either, I just built a platform from 2x6 and plywood, put on a bedskirt and for less than $500 had the best mattress I have ever had.
I got the King Size http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-SureTemp-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B00B9JIGOS/ref=pd_sbs_hg_2/183-6557505-7166700
Before you buy another piece of hardware please do yourself a favor:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006L9VANK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have the queen size version of this bed, but I'm sure the twin size is just as good, just smaller. It's inexpensive and very comfortable. You don't need a box spring or anything, the frame you already have will work.
If you can't afford it, then you need to prioritize your spending. You spend 1/3 of your life asleep, don't spend it sleeping on that disgusting thing.
We got it on Amazon
It weighs what you'd expect a $200 bed frame to weigh, but looks really nice, haha.
https://imgur.com/a/ZkqDDCi
Still not great lighting in my opinion. The carpeted room is the bedroom and the hardwood is the living/dining room.
Edit: Damn I found one I really like, but it's like $150 more than I want to spend. I'm trying to keep it under $200 and it's $325.
Edit2: Here's a few ones I've found today that I like more.

This is my bed. Really nice for the price! Easy to put together :)
I just bought this mattress and it's absolutely incredible. I was nervous about being able to feel the slats since it's only 5" thick but it's not a problem at all and it's the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. Feels just like the memory foam ones that cost 5X as much or more
I’ve heard great things about this bed
And because it folds up, it’s incredibly portable. Perfect for a semi-nomadic lifestyle.
I did a lot of research last year before buying a memory foam mattress. Price was very important to me. I ended up with one by DreamFoam: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0092UCN0Y
It's 8 inches of base foam and 5 inches of memory foam. I am a heavy guy and for the almost 1 year I have had this mattress it has held up well. It does tend to sag a tad on my side of the bed, but then I switched sides and that side returned to normal.
I highly recommend checking out the site http://themattressunderground.com before buying. I found this mattress thanks to them.
Edit: forgot to mention, the only thing I wish I had done differently is I wish I had gotten the king size instead of the queen. With memory foam, you lose a little bit of width of the bed simply because the edges are not rigid like a coil mattress.
I agree, it does look somewhat bulky. Back when I had it, as a 23 y/o woman, I built it alone with a lil elbow grease.
I now have the Zinus Sonoma double bed with the same storage capacity, though it does require drawers or bins underneath.
A more minimal, inspired aesthetic. VERY easy to put together and really inexpensive.
Go on Amazon. Same exact foam, same mattress, more than half the cost. We got a king sized memory foam for $300 and we love it.
This is the one we got, there's other brands for about the same price, this one just has a lot of good reviews
Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress, King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7EPV8O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_iZFJAb574PG48
Second buying one on Amazon! Didn't think I liked memory foam either but I stand corrected. We got this one, basically a knockoff Casper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q7EPFT4?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title&th=1 .. pretty sure mattress stores are exclusively for money laundering.
I'm in a similar situation and was recently looking at this foldable bed frame: https://www.amazon.com/Full-Size-Fold-Bed-Compact/dp/B001IPVWG2
The reviews on amazon seem to be pretty favorable.
Not sure how well it would support a foam mattress topper, but you might be able to slide a piece of wood underneath to help with the gaps.
Insanely awesome memory foam mattress that ships to your front door from Amazon.
put a protector on it and hopefully it will last a long time with your new gf.
http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-SureTemp-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B00B9JIGOS/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1418664447&sr=1-2&keywords=sleep+innovations+memory+foam+mattress&pebp=1418664452036
This bed frame from Zinus is under $100 and makes a great base for a dungeon bed. There's 18" of space underneath, and I have mine up on 4" risers.
There are many other similar models on amazon - even some that adjust (head and feet go up and down) for not a lot of extra money, if that's something you're interested in.
>That mattress that retails for $2,000 probably wholesales for about $1,000, and the cost to manufacture it was about $500.
Unless shipping and store fronts have gotten crazy expensive you are talking about a 40% profit at each step. Retail products normally have a profit margin of around 5%.

If your prices were accurate ($500 manufacture cost, $1000 wholesale price) then no one would be able to manufacture and sell a bed for under $500 and stay in business... but that isn't the case at all. Plenty of beds sell for those prices and the companies have been around for decades. This is like arguing that prescription glasses cost $200 to manufacture and that you can't buy high quality ones for $60.

these beds are rated extremely well and have been on the market for years (the company, Brooklyn Bedding, has been around since the 90s).
this article says differently than what you are saying, and is more in line with what I'm saying. They do seem to be saying I'm not 100% accurate in my assessment of prices but that is to be expected. Note that they source their information throughout the article.
this company has been around since 2012 and pretty much agrees with me.
It depends on what type of break occurred. Was it straight down, through slats, or did the bed break at corners? Additional legs may help. I would have used 2x4s!
It may be unnecessary to buy a new bed, depending on the damage and your preferences. Is it possible to buy a standard bed frame and set it up inside the old bed? You may need to connect things with brackets or wood blocks to get it to fit together.
Alternatively, is it possible to fit a standard bed frame into either of the new beds? If one needs to be a platform bed, you could use 2 sheets of 1/2" or 3/4" ply cut to size (e.g., 2 30" x 80" pieces for a queen bed). I'd put a strip of rubber matting (like a door mat) between the two pieces to reduce squeaking; if that doesn't work, use a scrap piece of the ply to join them, using glue and screws on the underside.
Slats make the bed springier, and usually more comfortable. Reinforcing a few of the slats may help, or adding additional slats, either thicker slats or more, spaced closely.
I have an older bed with approximately 12" of storage underneath. The box springs are old but I got a new mattress that's surprisingly comfortable and cheap.
Under the bed I store my out of season clothes and bedding.

http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-3Q2900CLMCB-Storage-Blueberry-Frost/dp/B002HDHM36/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450288886
I bought this mattress for $420, and it is BY FAR the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. I used to have incredible back pain by the time I went to bed from work, but not anymore. I dare say, that this may just be too comfortable for a bed. I got the California King as well, turned it sideways, and now I have a bed for Me, my wife, baby, and various other animals.
Check out Mattress Lot. They have some good deals, they're local, and will deliver on a bike. They'll even give you a discount if you ride a bike or take public transit there. http://www.mattresslot.com/mattress_lot/Welcome.html
And I use this which does the job pretty well. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HCZ0YGG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I recommend the memory foam mattresses, which are cheap on amazon. I got a California King size mattress from Amazon Prime (delivered in 2 days!) last year:
http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-SureTemp-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B00B9JIGOS
The Full size version is $329 and comes with 2 memory foam pillows.
I know you said you want to test this before you buy it, but perhaps you could test one of these memory foam mattresses out at a furniture store and then if you like it, but it on amazon.
I've been happy with this inexpensive Zinus memory foam mattress from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Master-Ultima-Comfort-Mattress/dp/B005G5SIRG I put on my futon frame that folds out to a platform bed, but you can also buy metal frames from this company. I've had it about 10 months so far and it's still comfortable. I went for this particular mattress because it offered the most firm foam for the money and I prefer a firmer mattress. The prices on these things bounce around all the time, so check camelcamelcamel before buying. I paid $130 for a queen, but the same mattress is now $210. This one is currently cheaper and offers more firm foam: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4N3QJ1
I bought this for my son a year ago, he loves it. He easily stores laundry baskets full of extra clothing underneath to be accessed from the sides. The wooden front panel might make front access impossible, but the Zinus brand has more models without the front panel. Assembly was quick and easy. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WWF1P78/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_TLaVBb89J7T7F
I am very happy with this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006L9VANK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Being able to read the thousands of reviews was a good substitute for not being able to try it out before buying.
Not sure your budget, but this one has great reviews and is only $219
https://www.amazon.ca/Zinus-Ultima-Comfort-Memory-Mattress/dp/B005G5SIRG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=VG98IVE7ZSZU&keywords=queen+mattress&qid=1567889304&s=kitchen&sprefix=queen,aps,177&sr=1-6&linkCode=ll1&tag=glitzandgf-20&linkId=e9022f665daa9d0795340ebc9304d02b&language=en_CA
Oh boy. If your room can accommodate a king, get it.
Admittedly, I don't get to be as close to the wife as I would often like to. But, we have plenty of room now. And when she gets up during the night to take a leak, I don't even notice.
https://www.reddit.com/r/LifeProTips/comments/7z2f6v/lpt_before_buying_a_memory_foam_mattress_do_some/
This seems to be a good discussion.
Linus seems to be coming up a LOT. And for $320 on prime for a king, I'd give it a go. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7EPV8O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_iZFJAb574PG48
Lucid also. I'm 100% happy with it.
Just got an outback myself so I spent the last week looking for options. I have a friend that car camps and uses a 4" foam mattress topper so I know that can work. I saw the tri-fold mattress below on sale and it looks like it can compress so I'm giving that a try. I liked it because it seemed easier to stow than a topper you'd have to roll up. If it doesn't end up meeting my needs I'll return it and go with a mattress topper.
Milliard Tri Folding Mattress, with Ultra Soft Removable Cover and Non-Slip Bottom, (Single 75" x 25") Better Than An Air Mattress https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W67PJ4M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ZgIhAb99C9B9T
Edit: just got the tri-fold delivered. Looks like it'll take up more space if that's an issue for you. The pictures looked like it could compress because it's shipped vacuum packed. You should be able to stack stuff on it no problem but I think a stuff sack is out of the question. Also a little heavy but seems so damn comfy.
I use this fold-able bed frame: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IPVWG2/ref=twister_B001IPWV7Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
really great for a portability as I swapped living spaces recently, lift-able for one person, one fold to fold it up.
And then I combo it with an affordable foam mattress from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00Q7EPPDA/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1493900674&sr=1-4&keywords=mattress&th=1
but you could find some roll-up mattress/futon like you said.
Get your mattress online! There is no reason to spend a lot of money on one, there are really comfortable high quality mattresses available for less than $500. I have this one in a full and have been really happy with it.
A few thoughts:
Edit: Autocorrect "corrected" a word. Fixed now!
I got this one, ten inch tall/king size. My SO and I both love it!
Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress, King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7EPV8O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_057YzbR8MECBT
This what I use. It's the perfect size for my Prius v. I actually use two to make it extra comfy, but I'm sure many will be fine with just one. It being foldable might be a plus for you.

Things I'm planning on next:
New sheets/bedset. What I would like to do is a burnt orange fitted sheet, gray topsheet, and gret/white duvet cover.
Bedframe: Link
Still havent picked up my desk chair just yet, picked up this desk last night, but my office chair is a nock off Herman Miller from amazon basics
Grey curtains
Orange accented floor rug near entrance to room
Of course, something for the walls. I have a grey/white clock I need to put up and would like to get some artwork sometime soon
Yep. mattressunderground and sleeplikethedead were my go-to resources for researching mattresses. I bought this about a month ago and have been very happy so far.
I bought this Sleep Innovations 10-Inch SureTemp Memory Foam Mattress for less than $400. One of the BEST purchases I've made in a while.
They make a single version of this that folds up to be small but is WAY more comfortable than an air mattress https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJ8HX96/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1
Zinus Ultima Comfort Memory Foam 8 Inch Mattress, Queen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006L9VANK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tg38Bb5HKQEBX
I used this personally for 2 years before upgrading to the king size and moving it to the guest room. So far about 50% of guests comment to us about how comfortable the bed is in our reviews.
Ah word, if it's not a daily sleeper than that makes more sense haha.
I'd probably pick Zinus in that case, something like this

we've had ours for a while now and I can say it's the best mattress we have ever owned.
I got this one on amazon for less than 200. I love it.
Zinus Memory Foam 10 Inch Green Tea Mattress, Queen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7EPFT4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_dgkDCbFF84ENY
Zinus Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed with Wooden Slats, Queen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W4DCTK0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_CyErxbJM3YT87
This one has been awesome. Put a memory foam on top of it and it wont make a single noise. Ultimate stealth fucking..
For a bit more you could go with this and this. We have both in queen size and we love them. Even ended up getting our kid the twin size ones.
Need to know your budget and size (twin, full, queen, king).
Do you really just want a frame, like this or actual furniture?
If you want furniture, style is an important factor.
I used this mattress on the floor, for side laying breastfeeding, every night from about 2 or 3 weeks until he was about 8 weeks, and then off and on when he would have bad witching hours / cluster feeds / needy nights until about 11 weeks.
Milliard TWIN 6-Inch Memory Foam... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJ8HX96?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Since 11 weeks, he consistently sleeps through the night with zero witching hours. Thank heavens ! Whew those were some rough first weeks. Good luck mama.
Do you have room to store a trifold gel mattress? Like in a cupboard or closet? Because sofa beds are never comfy, and air mattresses make noise, and may not work for taller / larger people. Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Milliard-Tri-fold-Mattress-Removable-Non-Slip/dp/B00DJ8HX96/
we just got a guest bed mattress from Amazon. Queen size, memory foam - $250 including tax. It's not quite as good as our super-fancy mattress (that we overpaid for), but it's way better than an air bed!
We have prime, so it came in about 2 days.

Millard Tri Folding Mattress - $80
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W67PJ4M
Bought off a recommendation in this sub. I originally went with the REI self inflating sleeping pad and was tossing and turning at night. The Millard tri fold has been great so far.
This is the one we finally bought to get out mattress off the floor. Our box spring broke a while ago, so this was the perfect option, plus extra storage! (You know, once we saved up the money)

I bought one if these for my rav4, it’s amazing. Just make sure you have adequate ventilation. It would be gross if it got wet.
I did not get a memory foam mattress when we did this, I just used a spring one I had on hand. We did later use a memory foam one off Amazon we used with the same setup: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005G5SIRG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This mattress is amazing if they ship overseas.
I'm interested in other's thoughts on Sleep Innovations mattresses as well. I'm saving up for this one right now...

These are surprisingly comfortable. I have two - we take them camping sometimes at festivals but I've also used them at home for myself or guests:

A 4 feels like a truck rumbling by if you are 20-30 miles away. You could have experienced quite a few and not known it. Up close to the epicenter, it can be a wavy feeling that can transform to giant rocking sensations, and you should seek cover.
We've been too lucky in Los Angeles. Too damn lucky. All of the little ones have been wavy and over with very quickly.
I specifically bought a bed frame and left part of it empty underneath with a gallon of water, food bars, stuff for my dog, some shoes, a set of clothes and a other things should I get trapped under there. Here it is if you're interested: https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-SmartBase-Foundation-Replacement-Noise-Free/dp/B017YETH8K/
Bed frames are pretty cheap too bro.
They don't even cost that much.
37 dollars new
Not to mention that you can find a used one for even less.
Really this is pretty safely on the /r/Cheap side of things
Thanks!

I got this mattress and am extremely happy with it. I'd recommend a waterproof mattress cover, as sweat and other moisture can mess up the foam. I built myself a frame for about $50 in wood and screws.
Do you think this would be good?
www.themattressunderground.com is a fabulous resource for mattress buying. Spoiler alert: The mattress industry mostly wants to screw you. Buy independent/factory direct, almost never name brands.
Here's a specific guide to buying based on budget. A sub $500 budget probably means a "throwaway" mattress, which doesn't mean you can't find something comfortable and supportive, only that it's unlikely to last more than a few years.

Here's an excellent value mattress, but $600 for a queen.

Here's an inexpensive frame that would be good for a foam or latex mattress.
http://www.amazon.com/Handy-Living-Queen-Wood-Frame/dp/B002KQ5KQG/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1373595116&sr=1-1&keywords=slat+bed+frame
Edit: I forgot: I'd stay the hell away from used mattresses. One particular reason: Bed bugs are Satan in bug form, and there is no way to be sure a used mattress doesn't have them.
Probably this one. Though I'd probably recommend this one for $50 more.
An 8" foam mattress (Queen) is around $200. A 6" is around $150. Full would be a bit cheaper. If your parents already have a box spring/ bed frames, then this could be a nice replacement.
Highly recommend a fold away memory foam mattress.... I have one in my youngest 2’s room for just such occasions
https://www.amazon.com/Milliard-Tri-fold-Mattress-Removable-Non-Slip/dp/B00DJ8HX96?ref_=w_bl_hsx_s_ki_web_6571948011&th=1
If you're looking for good shoes, try Allen Edmonds, Red Wing, Thursday Boots, RM Williams, and /r/goodyearwelt in general. Of course, comfy tennis shoes are great too and there's a reason old people who stopped "giving a fuck" wear Reebok and New Balance.
For beds, try a lot of the new foam beds that have come out recently. TempurPedic has been overcharging people for too long. This bed will drop down to ~$350 every so often, and it's a great mattress. I also have a $1000 Loom and Leaf mattress which is basically a Tempur Pedic clone but I prefer the cheaper mattress because it's a bit firmer. Tempur Pedics are way too soft in my opinion, and they give me back problems.
One other thing this post fails to mention is exercise. It's hard to think of a better investment than 30 minutes of exercise a day.
I have chronic low back pain. My favorite was an old fashioned water bed with a softer mattress. My wife hated it for a few reasons so we got rid of it.
Now we have a pillowtop mattress with gel in it. "Ultimate Dreams P/T Gel" by Brooklyn Bedding, available on amazon and made in Phoenix. I think it's called DreamFoam Bedding on amazon. If you contact Chuck (like the listings say, he's very helpful).
EDIT: I searched and searched for a good bed and a fair price, these guys were the ones.
Maybe it isn't full sized furniture, maybe it's just a matress on the floor like this one from amazon. Although the length would be tough with angles and stuff.

i have it in a queen, im 230 pounds and its shockingly comfortable. ive had it for about a year and a half.
I have this one. It feels just like a tempurpedic.
This what I got. 20 year guarantee, made in USA. I had back problems before but not anymore. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B9JIGOS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=webtoolandtec-20
Honestly any 10" memory foam off amazon should be adequate.
I get so tired of the whole "you don't need a bed or any other basic furniture" thing being repeated over and over. Yeah, they are inconvenient to move, but there are ways around that without sleeping on a fucking yoga mat.
A bedframe that folds up flat and comes in various sizes.
A mattress that folds up rather compactly, can be used as seating, and comes in various sizes. Can be padded with a mattress pad and blankets.
Still too much? Get a Japanese style futon.
A desk that can be folded down flat. As a single person, I often eat at my desk.
Or if you don't like to eat at your desk, a collapsible small personal table...just sit on your bed.
They also make collapsible chairs.
I understand the desire to not have much of anything because it's a pain to move, but there's a point where it gets ridiculous. There are ways around it. Yeah, having sex on the floor is better than no sex at all, but I won't be having any sex if I don't get a good night's sleep, and I certainly need at least a few inches of padding more than a yoga mat provides.

Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPFT4 $259.00
So, they look a little like this, which is actually the bed frame we have (coz we wanted something tall enough to slide Rubbermaid totes under), and I can tell you that occasionally one of the metal slats will slide out of the holders, but it’s fixable with a little effort. My parents have this one in their guest room (actually in 2 guest rooms in 2 different states, heh), which is all one piece, but looks slightly different than the ones I’ve noticed lately on the show. I had a wooden slatted futon when I was in college, and yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. My college bf got a little, ahem, cray once and basically put his knee through a couple of the slats, so I couldn’t imagine them having standard wooden box springs for long. A former friend of mine (who I’ve mentioned in this thread before) was (is) v large (400+lbs) and married someone who is just as large or larger than she is and they had to build a special bed frame for themselves out of 2x4’s, because previous ones had failed them at, uh...inopportune moments, shall we say. She also told me about how they deal with excess skin flaps during sex and sometimes that memory crosses my mind and I wanna die.
If you want something even more portable, this is what I use, it's very very comfy. https://www.amazon.com/Milliard-Tri-fold-Mattress-Removable-Non-Slip/dp/B00DJ8HX96/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&th=1

Table and I stole a folding chair from my Uni to go along with the table.
A metal bed frame, something like this is just a couple collapsible pieces of metal that fold up really small and will elevate your bed a few inches off the ground. You will need a box spring, or some other platform for the mattress to rest on
Here you go but it went up in price. My only issue with the mattress is the sides are too soft and if u roll too close the edge you'll fall off.

I'm no hostel owner but I bought the 12 inch version of this mattress back when it was well under $300 and I've had it for ~2.5 years with no issues. Two other people I know have bought the same one after trying it.
I have had this model from Amazon since February 2012. I think memory foam in general is too soon to tell if it's going to be BIFL, but it is no different than the day we bought it. We bought another one (the Lucid by LinenSpa line) last Summer for a guest bed.
They are quite firm, but in the end I think it's probably better for my back/hips. I don't think it's particularly life changing, but then I did replace the old (very expensive pillowtop) mattress because of constant hip pain which this does not cause.
If I were going to buy my own bed again, I'd splurge for a thicker mattress with a thicker layer of actual memory foam (you'll see the one I linked is 3" memory foam and 7" regular foam). But I'd still buy this type from Amazon.
fuck no guy you can buy a brand new memory foam king size mattress on amazon for 200$. A 140$ used is bullshit.
