As others have said, rollers are superior for improving technique and trainers are superior for improving strength. Simple as that.
Rollers
The reason why people have a hard time adjusting to rollers at first is usually because their pedal stroke and handling are piss poor...riding just this winter has done amazing things for my pedal stroke.
The downside to rollers, as one person mentioned, is the lack of top-end...to counter that you can ride with lower pressure in your tires or buy something like this...looks like they sold out. I own one and it does help quite a bit but my trainer is still WAY harder to top out. I guess I'll also mention that there are other adapters that will allow you to lock your front dropouts in place so that you can ride concentration-free.
Trainers
Trainers are nice because you can just sit on the bike and grind out miles without paying attention...I'll play video games or watch a movie and the time will fly by. Trainers are also great for interval work, especially if you have one that will allow you to adjust resistance while riding.
Recommendation
That said, I'd recommend rollers over a trainer any day. A better pedal stroke requires less strength (makes up for some of it's weaknesses to the trainer) and better handling is always important. Only reason I'd suggest a trainer instead is if you want to grind out mileage without your mind being involved all the time.

I've seen that before but that was when I first started riding rollers. Having tried it myself, I assure you it's far more impressive than it looks. Riding without your hands on a roller is slightly harder than riding on the road (in my opinion) and I was able to do it after about 20 hours. What I find amazing is that he's doing so well in a game that requires intense focus while still staying very stable on the rollers. I'd imagine the reason for that specific training is partially for the fun of playing games but mostly for the mental training to keep track of so many different things at once.
I'd say the most important thing is to get one that is fluid based. They will be a little more expensive, but definitely worth it compared to the magnetic ones. The ride is much smoother and quieter.
If you want to buy one that will last for years and years, but costs a good bit more than the cheap models, check out a Kurt Kinetic. It uses a sealed fluid system, so it's guaranteed not to leak, but also has a lifetime warranty to back it up.

Many people have great luck with cheaper trainers. I had one for a few years that worked fine, but then I got a KK. The KK is definitely a much nicer unit in my opinion. I don't regret spending the extra money at all.
CycleOps is also another brand I've heard good things about, but I've not tried their trainers.
edit: One more tip. In general when shopping for trainers, the bigger the flywheel, the better. Bigger flywheels offer a resistance curve that that is closer to the feel of riding on the road.
The most sustainable, enjoyable fitness is the one you love doing.
For years I was told that cardio was the way to go, the way to stay fit, that thing that will slim you down. And so I did it, for years, and I hated it. And as a result, I was inconsistent. But then I started hanging around xxfitness, and everyone was like, "lift heavy! squatz! bench pressessss!". And so I did -- and I LOVED IT. I've been going consistently, I feel positively challenged, and I am amazed at my progress.
But this is just my example. You need to find something that you love doing. If you love biking, and you own a bike, get yo'self one of these and peddle away inside! Maybe even pop a movie in, and peddle while watching, if that's your thing. Once the chill is gone, then go back outside! I would also suggest /r/bodyweightfitness, if you want strength training without the machines, or pick up a set of dumbbells if it's in your budget.
I think another thing to remember is that staying fit, while it should be fun, also requires a little bit of sacrifice. If being fit and in shape was easy, everyone would be super in shape all the time!
A little bit of background first .. I grew up on a bike, caved into peer pressure to join high school cross country, and never did any sort of lap swimming until a college intermediate swim class (even though my dad was a near Olympics alternate for backstroke in the early 60's). I've been a runner since, picked up triathlon at age 35 for three years when our first was 4mo old. Then went on hiatus for three years until our second was 18mo old with some running stints mixed in. Now I'm 44 and just finished my third straight season. I started back three years ago with focusing on a half Ironman in August of 2016.
Training Plan - A 20 week training plan is just right, and you will do fine to just finish. I recommend the Matt Fitzgerald Essential Week-By-Week Training Guide as it has a ton of training plans for beginners to near pros for each of the four triathlon distances. I have exclusively used this for training since my second year in 2011. He has a new book out called 80/20 Traithlon that I picked up and may use for the 2019 season. His reason for 80/20 is that you spend at least 80% of your time training at easy to aerobic capacity and no more than 20% of your time at higher intensity. This helps reduce injury risk. I also follow the 10% rule of not increasing consecutive weeks in time/distance by more than 10% (with the exception of a one-off week every 4+ weeks depending on training peaks/valleys).
Triathlon Club - Find and get into a local triathlon club. You will gain a world of experience being around those people. I joined the Ann Arbor Triathlon Club in 2014 just to do open water swimming during the summer, and I wasn't even racing in triathlons for another two years! Now I'm the mentor program leader.
Time - I am a family guy as well with a full time job and wife who also works. We have maintained alternate schedules since 2010 so that we do not have the need for third party daycare. School has been a relief that the kids are in 3rd grade and preschool, and their grandparents pick up the preschooler for a few hours a couple times a week so that we can maintain a somewhat healthy schedule. What I've done for training is include the kids! I think I pushed the youngest in the baby jogger over 100 miles each the 2016 and 2017 seasons. I'll sometimes do that while the older child rides her bike on a paved trail. Get a smart trainer! I have a Tacx Vortex Smart trainer I picked up in February of 2016, and it has made a world of difference! It allows me to ride any time (usually after "bedtime"), be safe off the roads (important as a dad!), and do specific interval training.
Training Volume - You should first build up your base for at least three months prior to your 20 week ramp-up schedule. Most of these schedules expect you to be able to jump right in. Otherwise, you'll risk injury and/or disappointment. Getting up to 6-8hrs per week before this ramp-up is good. You can achieve that with 2/discipline workouts per week (6 total). The max you'll reach with a "just finish" schedule is in the 10-12hr/wk range, and that is pretty tough. I think I've only crossed the 12hr mark once, and that was because of having a long workout delayed to the next day into the start of the next week. Three hours is about the max you'll do in a workout, and that would be on the bike. You'll hit around 2hr max run and 1hr max swim.
Nutrition - I swear by Hammer Nutrition products. I use their HEED electrolyte drink several times a week for workouts and Perpetuem for workouts over 2hrs. Their Endurolytes Fizz is great for on-the-go to carry with you in case you need to squeeze in a workout and don't want to pack ziplocs of HEED powder. Keep snacks handy! You will be burning 4000+ extra calories per week! Quick snacks like fruit, figs/dates, crackers with peanut butter or hummus, dry cereal, oatmeal, veggies, and more will help stave off the between meal hunger. At peak training, I think I eat five meals per day with snacking between and am on a 4000+ per day calorie need. Make sure to up your protein and water intake as well. Keep water around at all times. Have Fun - You will have ups and downs along the way. Don't let a bad day or even bad week get to you. These will happen! Just remember to stay the course and focus on the goal. And, most importantly, have fun!

Yes your trainer choice sounds spot on.
as other people have said, Zwift is totally worth the $10 a month(you can run it on your phone or a tablet if you want to focus on the TV... personally, zwift keeps me engaged enough that i don't need the TV.), if the trainer doesn't come with a climbing block they can make a substantial improvement on the comfort of riding a trainer.
It sounds like you currently have a bike, so maybe a trainer would be an option? They can be somewhat pricey but I love mine. I have a "lower-quality" one via Nashbar that I think works great. I especially like that it folds up and fits in the closet, because I definitely don't have space for a stationary bike.
My husband uses a Kinetic trainer, which I have to say is REALLY nice, but if it was up to me I'd still pick the Nashbar based on a price/quality basis.
Also if you go this direction it's only fair to mention you'd want to get a riser, but when I got the first trainer and couldn't afford one I just screwed some pieces of wood together, worked fine.
Hopefully that's something you'd be interested in...I live in a very hot climate in the summer, too, so it's nice to put on a Sufferfest video and point the box fan DIRECTLY at my face.
Do you have a speed sensor (speed-only or speed-cadence) on your bike? If you do, then you can use a program like Trainer Road and their "Virtual Power" - they have power curves on many turbo trainers from relatively inexpensive mag units to more expensive fluid units to actual rollers (side-note - thats an amazing price on those Kreitlers... if I hadn't just gotten my perfectly fine Nashbar set...). It can even directly control "Smart Trainers", like the Wahoo KICKR or take power values directly from a power meter if you decide to upgrade down the line.
Best part is that TR can use things like Sufferfest videos to make your training even more "pleasant".

I had on of these, it was great. There are a bunch of different brands but here is some on amazon. Definitely get the extra lifts that allow you to raise the front of the bike for more resistance. If you are in shape, you will want those for sure. Have fun! I had to get rid of mine when we moved into a smaller place. A great buy though if you have the space.

I have this one. It's OK. It's quite noisy - a deep, bassy whirr - but a) I don't know if it's any noiser than the next one. and b) I can watch TV ok while training; it's not that loud. I do worry about my neighbours, though - and I live in a terraced house, not a flat. However, the noise is also a good indicator of how you're riding: you can hear your flat spots really clearly, and try to correct them by ear.
In terms of quality, it's decent; good and sturdy, and easy to set up. It comes with a special QR spindle that you need to replace your current back wheel spindle with; then you can easily clip in and out of the trainer with a quick flip/lock. On this basis, it's no good if you can't/don't use a QR back wheel for whatever reason.
Krietlers are the best rollers on the market. In terms of functionality, most rollers are similar. However Krietlers offer superior quality in terms of manufacturing. They are also very easy to repair.
If you want to buy a new Krietler, they are pretty cheap on Amazon right now.
If you are considering buying a used roller, make sure it is a Krietler, then you know you can replace parts as they wear out.

I do casual rides of about 8 miles a few times a week. I'm lucky to live in Florida where I can bike year round, but for the nights/rainy days when I want to pedal a bit but don't want to haul the bike up and down the stairs to my studio apartment, I bought this bike trainer
It's only slightly loud (no complaints from the neighbors, anyway!) and easy to hook up, especially if you've got a quick release latch on the rear tire. The thing is though, it's boooooriinggggg. I have to watch netflix with closed captioning on to stay on it for any length of time, but it is nice to have the option, especially if winter would otherwise keep you down!

I did some casual email and phone calls the other day and it worked fine. Since you’re just doing it to move your legs, I’m sure you’ll be fine.
I’m usually a big proponent of finding a good fitting saddle and just roughing out the pain with some good bike shorts until your butt gets used to it. But if you’ll be using this setup for extended time while working, I might look into a secondary saddle and seat post. Maybe something more comfy and chair/stool like.

I have a CycleOps fluid trainer and although it's good for getting that leg work done, it's mind numbingly boring. I HAVE TO have something interesting to watch while I spin. BTW, unless you have your AC blasting away or your spinning outside in the cold night or heavy breeze, you're gonna want a box fan in front of you. And that negates much of the quiet qualities of an expensive trainer.
Personally, I like rollers a lot more. It takes some time getting used to it but once you do, you'll realize how much more beneficial it is in most riding aspects. Only thing is that you have to be super smooth. So if you want to sprint, you have to start smoothly. You'll get used to it.
I use the Kurt Kinetics Road Machine trainer, but it looks pretty much exactly like the CycleOps trainer FLredditguy posted. I watched the setup video he posted and it is almost exactly the same as the Kurt Kinetics one I have. The CycleOps trainer is a bit cheaper (about $30 difference on Amazon), but I can't comment on the build quality or sturdiness of it.
I can say that I have been very happy with the Road Machine I have, maybe someone here has used both and can comment on the pros/cons between these two.

Now YMMV, I'm a guy that has never been overweight or out of shape. The one thing I know from trying to help friends that weren't a fortunate as my family is genetically is that I suck at helping overweight folks fix things. It's very hard for me to know what's safe.
That being said, I would recommend starting with a kettlebell. Something that feels substantial without feeling like you can't control it, or at least lift it off the floor with one hand. Start with just putting it between your feet, squatting down and grabbing it with both hands then standing up - rinse repeat for 10 reps. Then move on to doing that with one hand, alternating. Then maybe move up to swings or cleans. A kettlebell is pretty versatile, there are exercises for most parts of your body with just that one weight.
I'm able to put everything away in my closet for when people come over, but think about that before you buy anything like the bench I mentioned. The other thing you want to keep in mind is that having a bunch of weights makes moving that much harder.
It's a lot spendier, but my personal favorite is the Kinetic. Good resistance, very stable, no vibration, and pretty quiet.

Secondly, I actually like to just set up the bike indoors on a trainer and just watch a show or something while I pedal away. That way you don't have to worry about bike lanes or other cars and what not. Its defnitely not quite the same as feeling that wind in your face, but all things considered it's a fantastic way to get your cardio in.

Do you have a bike? If so, you could get a resistance trainer on Amazon or rollers and ride that. That's what I do in my off-season when I can't ride my road bike outside and I love it. You latch your bike in and then adjust the resistance to what you want and ride like a banshee; set up in front of a TV and either watch shows/movies or play video games while you ride. There are rollers, magnetic resistance trainers, and fluid resistance trainers and they are all good. Magnetic resistance is usually the most affordable; here is a link to a trainer with good reviews that fits most types of bikes. Just an option; you can then collapse it down when you're not using it and it doesn't take up much space.
WT 2018 has lots more vehicles and modes with the same broken repetitive gameplay and worse grind.
That's not meant to discourage you from playing again as it can still be a lot of fun playing WT with friends on Discord.
You probably chose to leave for good reasons though so maybe you can merge the good mental/physical health parts of riding and gaming/socializing by combining the two?
Maybe get something like this and stream while you ride and play indoors? Or just ride indoors and chat online? Or grab a bike riding game like this?

So I've looked at rollers... look fun but don't think I'm there yet lol The two trainers I'm looking at are the conquer and the [travel trac] (http://www.performancebike.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_10052_10551_1111867_-1) (Thanks for suggesting performance bike, u/Xanatos24). Travel trac is more expensive as a base, and I'd have to buy the front tire stand unlike with the conquer. Plus a mat, indoor tires, and maybe a little fan. I've also heard of ways to connect to Zwift without a smart trainer, like with an ANT+?
Is the higher price worth it?
This trainer has really good reviews and a favorable price. I don't have it, but I tend to trust reviews on Amazon.
In southern WI there are just those weeks where it is unsafe. Any time the actual temperature for the day is below 0 I opt to ride in doors and drive to work.
Above 0 having a good pair of winter biking shoes and full equipment makes it completely doable, though you will be slower.
The biggest issue most people face is fogging glasses. I picked up some anti fog construction glasses that work well, though I bought multiple pairs because after 10-15 rides and constantly wiping them the anti-fog is basically gone.
Some people have had luck with Mountain Climbing glasses, but I just can't justify $200-$300 on a pair of glasses that may work.
OP, I don't suggest biking in everything but if it is a nice 20-30 degree day get some gear and enjoy the outdoors.

A couple of months ago I bought my first Carbon fiber bike. It is a BMC Teammachine SLR03 2017. How useful are these, and are they safe to use on a carbon frame?
Another question is storage for winter. I cannot ride anymore this year because of the weather and will be storing the bike in a bed room inside an apartment. Are they any things to take into consideration with storing the bike? Thanks.

I bought the Travel Trac Fluid Trainer to use this winter. It's been pretty great for me so far. Definitely the cheapest of the fluid trainers. If you want to video game while biking, you might want to consider a fluid trainer, which are generally more quiet than mag and wind trainers.

I got this one when it was about 20 bucks cheaper, and it does the job. Came with a front wheel stand..? Chock? Whatever. Kind of a pain to get it dialed to where you want to be, I can see the benefit to ones with a control on a cable, so you can change resistance without getting off the bike, but again, it was super cheap when I bought it.

A bit more than your given price range, but probably the best trainer out there, and it will last you forever, considering their lifetime warranty.
Something like this would be good if you feel like spending the money.

You are going to need to make a stand that will hold the bike and not tip. On top of that, your rear wheel needs something draining the energy (it is is peddling down hill otherwise).
I think I would go with an A frame that has a metal rod where the wheels attach. the rear wheel needs some resistance; I think modifying the wheel to act as a fan would work.

Get an indoor training stand for a bicycle. You can use said bike outside like normal and use the training stand inside to ride while you watch TV. It's light and easy to move. Example

(I think mine is the conquer fake). Mine seems sturdy and the platform at the top is plenty big, although the closed U end of the stand sticks further forward than I actually have room for.
I actually run zwift off my desk top and just run a long HDMI cable to the TV and put a little wireless keyboard on that stand.

It's a bit on the loud side and I've only used this trainer so I don't have fancier ones to compare it to. All in all though it does its job and IMO it does it well.
I also bike. Usually outside. I've been sitting on the idea of adding an indoor bike stand to the home set-up, but haven't yet heard of anyone who actually likes and uses this kind of equipment.

I've got a trainer and I'm trying to build endurance so I can bike to work this spring. Work is 10 miles away.
I'm targeting a cadence of 90ish, and 20 miles in one sitting. I'm trying to add a few minutes to each training session.
My question, what is the approximate ratio of training miles to road miles? Is 20 training miles enough to be able to get to work and back?
Also, right now my training plan is "keep peddling until exhausted". What are some better training tactics?
I got a cheap mag trainer from amazon last November. It worked fine for the winter. Lost like 50lbs. This year I found a cheap fluid trainer on craigslistp; gave the old one to my GF. I'd recommend getting a spare rear wheel for the trainer so you can quickly swap it out for weekends/surprisingly nice fall days. Get specific trainer tires too, reduces the noise and the trainer has a tendency to eat regular road tires.
But otherwise I parked my bike in front of my TV last winter and road for an hour or two each day. Not nearly as fun as in the wild, but Netflix/Video Games/TV helped. Dropped 50ish lbs and proceeded to put in +2000 miles this summer.

Buy a trainer, like this one, a cheap used road bike, and you have an indoor exercise bike. The bonus is you can ride the bike outside too. The trainer, which is the one I have, I linked uses fluid resistance, but there are other (and cheaper) options too.
Echoing what u/draconishex said. We mount our road bikes on a trainer in the basement during winter. There's a ton on Amazon, and I'm sure you could find them on the UK site too.
I just bought an indoor bike trainer for my apartment. It basically tuns any normal bike into a stationary bike. If you already have a bicycle, it wouldn't take up that much extra space. And it is easy enough to put the bike on, or take it off. Here is a link if you're interested
Check out your local craigslist or ebay before you drop the cash for a brand new one. I got a hell of a deal on mine using that route. Fluid trainers are the quietest fixed-wheel trainers but if you don't mind A LOT of noise, you can get a magnetic trainer for a little less.
The Kurt Kinetic and CycleOps fluid trainers are great if you can afford one. But Performance Bike and Nashbar have their own fluid trainers that are a little cheaper and will do the same job if you're not super serious about training.
Rollers are great if you can afford them, because they require you to retain balance rather than having your rear wheel on a stand. The only disadvantages are their size and the lack of adjustable resistance.

Have you considered spinning classes? They usually have loud music and some yelling, though as it goes to the beat this may help? Most of the spinning rooms I found to be less smelly, mostly because they are kept cooler than most other workout areas I have been in.
If that is not really working for you, you can do spinning at home as well. There is a video series called "Spinervals" essentially a spin class you can do at home. all you need is a bike, either a stationary one or a normal road one with a bike trainer.

Kettlebells, push ups and sit ups/crunches or leg lifts. I also try to do pushups and situps ever hour at the top of the hour, no matter where I am. I am in the Navy, so it does not look weird when I do them at work. Right now, my Chief and I are up to 40/40 every hour.
