Top Reddit comments about BMX Equipment:

I dont have any elbow guards, but just recently tried out two different knee guards. I'm 6' even. 255lbs.

17.750" (45.09cm) 4" below knee
21.5" (54.61cm) 4" above knee

Guards are a little hard to come by in that size. I've tried two types of knee guards.

Leatt Airflex Pro (XXL)
This fit well and provides a basic level of protection. The pad on the knee is pretty thin, but should protect against most things other than landing on a sharp rock or something. It also has some nice pads on the top and sides of the knee. Unfortunately, one of the guards started to rip in two places after only 4 rides. So I sent it in for warranty consideration.

Amazon Leatt Link

POC Joint VPD 2.0 (XL)
This one fit well, although a little tight. It felt much more substantial in the protection dept. The pad is like a thick hard memory foam. It covers the the knee and a good portion of the shin. It also has an extra pad on top and the main pad is fairly wide, which adds a little bit of side protection. The downsides are that it's a bit warmer than the Airflex and the material in the back tends to bunch up. I've only had one ride in these. The negatives are definitely noticeable, but I didnt really mind it after getting warmed up. I much prefer having them on. I really like how substantial the protection feels. Much better than the Leatt, while not going to the hardshell cap extreme.

wow, I just saw amazon lets you select square taper as a filter! Awesome. This makes it alot easier.

Is the SRAM s600 alright weight/durability wise? Seems like it might be a good option. Also Origin 8 and Sinz seem viable. Any opinions on these??

Demon United Podium Full Face Helmet black/Lrg https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079XR43BW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_UpVbBbCQZNB83

I just got this one in the mail in anticipation of eventually getting my Raptor 2 shipped to me. It's super lightweight and has pretty good ventilation. I definitely like the look of the downhill mountain bike helmets a lot more than something like the TSG Pass.

u/Unholywake · 2 pointsr/ElectricSkateboarding

I wouldn't trust most full face helmets for under $50. If you are going to be using that board going downhill and full throttle you'll really want a full face helmet. If you're just after life-saving protection then I'd go with something like this https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Tec-CLASSIC-SKATE-Classic-Helmet/dp/B0018GYNEO?th=1&psc=1

But if you want full-face protection go with something like this https://www.amazon.com/Bell-Sanction-Bike-Helmet-Hibiscus/dp/B07GT6NDKY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1541343354&sr=8-4&keywords=full%2Bface%2Blongboard%2Bhelmet&th=1&psc=1 (THIS IS NOT DOT RATED)

Now keep in mind that full-face doesn't have a visor and is not DOT rated so use at your own risk(still betetr than nothing). You can get dirtbike/BMX visors on the cheap or invest $200-$300 for a nice downhill longboarding helmet (That is DOT rated) but those are more designed for racing and are very aerodynamic.

I wear that Pro-Tec helmet I linked and take my meepo downhill up to 30mph but I also have a lot of downhill longboarding experience and have been 40+ before. With an E-Skate downhill can actually be more dangerous than a standard longboard due to stopping time and force, especially on an inexperienced rider. The advantage of classic longbaord downhill is sliding stops very quickly and we usually wear gloves with pucks and knee pads. Skate safe!

EDIT: As long as the helmet is DOT rated it should be fine, don't feel like what I linked you is the best of the best, just my informed opinion. For more information on why DOT rating on helmets is important: https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2013/04/08/motorcycle-helmet-standards-explained-dot-ece-22-05-snell/

Definitely get knee pads. I use the G-Form Elite knee and shin guards and they're great. They're super comfortable and I usually forget I'm wearing them while I'm riding. I've also heard good things about the Kali Protective strike knee pads. If you start doing big gaps and drops and stuff you might want to get a full face helmet and maybe even a neck brace.

Try to find a transfer-9 under a hundred dollars. This page often has various medium, large, and extra-large transfers for under a hundred, you have to click around in the color options.

That transfer 9 has like, 4 certifications, including the new downhill. I got one for less than $100. If you compare that to the sanction, the sanction's only got one certification and it's what you would expect, a cheap bike helmet full face but not even with a kid's skate-park certification.

https://www.amazon.com/Bell-Sanction-Adult-Helmet-Retina/dp/B01KP7J9A4/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=bell+sanction&psc=1&qid=1570541894&s=outdoor-recreation&sr=1-2

Scroll down to the chart and look at the certifications. If you can get a $96 helmet at the first link, it's literally like four times the helmet of your sanction.

Good luck!

You talking, something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Demon-Podium-Helmet-Viper-Goggles/dp/B01IWEA1PO/

Never seen anyone riding around town with one of them, but honestly if it was comfortable enough, I like the idea of it and the shade factor, no goggles just sunglasses though!

Also, I wonder how peripheral vision is with one of these?

Well alright, I'll consider myself lucky for making it out unharmed. Definitely looking into protective options now.

The pricing seems a bit odd on things... $120 for a suit of armor or $200 for a t-shirt and some foam. I figure since I don't have a pair of elbow pads if I can get something that is the full upper body (including elbows) that'd be pretty neat.

u/ItIsOnlyRain · 2 pointsr/bicycling

It is called the giro savant it is very bright and has reflective strips on it. In my use I have found it very breathable, comfortable and light and think for the £40 I think it is good value if you cycle a lot. If you want to spend a bit less you can get a giro indicator and stick some reflective stickers on it.

u/Helltrek · 3 pointsr/MTB

I picked these up from Demon United and have been pretty pleased with them. I have worn them on 8-14 mile rides with no issue. the D30 helps keep everything flexible without making you feel like you are wearing hockey goalie pads.

Ah! Yes. Then you need brake pads for v brakes, linear pull brakes.

Kool-Stop Dual Compound Mountain Pads for Linear Pull Brakes Threaded,Black/Salmon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CLSWKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_XFsKDb119BBTN

Anything like this. Personally, i like the pads that have removable inserts. They arent that much more and replacing shoes are a lot easier since you dont have to muck with positioning.

Kool Stop Bicycle V-Type Holder with Brake Pads (Dual Compound) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001T35RSC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PHsKDbR6NBC2N

Velo orange make a set. Clarks. Avid. Really any brand has a decent product like this.

u/mapkin · 3 pointsr/bmx

I'll recommend the KMC K710 chain. I personally think it's the best bang for your buck at $11 shipped to your door. All similarly rated chain is going to be the same, you end up paying for aesthetics and branding. The Odyssey Bluebird chain is $15-20 and it's a 510 chain, the Shadow Interlock V2 is nearly $40. So it really depends on what you find value in.

u/HalseyPlzHoldMeDown · 4 pointsr/ElectricSkateboarding

Most people here will probably recommend something like the TSG Pass, but it’s well over your budget (259USD). Since you’re just trying out esk8, I would think about getting a mountain bike style helmet which is significantly cheaper but will still protect you face/teeth. This one is 89USD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079XQ4QVJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_XhB-Ab06ZZCAF

re-post from silverfish:

Re: cheap FULLFACE helmets?!!!
"I've gotten a Bell Sanction. Very light and affordable, but I had to make my own visor. Runs a size smaller, so if you wear a M for other helmets, get an L."

According to amazon it "weighs just 950 grams"

As an added bonus it looks pretty sick without the visor.

u/ANTI-PUGSLY · 2 pointsr/FixedGearBicycle

These - honestly tried to do this on the cheap and easy so Amazon Prime BMX bars were a quick fix.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002BW3H64/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zDFbBbW0Z1MQP

Keep in mind you’ll need a shim if you’re using a 25.4 stem, which is standard. BMX bars aren’t thicker in the middle like road bars are.

u/SuperFluffyArmadillo · 1 pointr/bmx

Quick trick if you're short cash.
Get a dry scotch bright pad (the green ones you clean dishes with).
Put the pad inbetween the rim braking surface and your brake pad. Push the brake pad in OR squeeze the brake and spin the rear wheel.
It cleans up your rims and makes for a quick and easy fix.

Long term fix. Buy some new brake pads. They're cheap.

http://www.amazon.com/Kool-Stop-Bicycle-Brake-Threaded/dp/B000BMRSCK/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1458062380&sr=8-14&keywords=bmx+brake+pads

u/chamoisjuice · 1 pointr/bicycling

These brakes are called sidepull calipers. They typically come on beach cruisers and cheap BMX bikes. The ones on your bike are very cheap, stamped steel ones. Forged aluminum ones are considerably stiffer, and brake better, as well as being lighter.

Odyssey 1999 brakes are a good option. They go for $15-20 including lever, cable, and the brake.
http://www.amazon.com/Odyssey-Sidepull-Caliper-Brake-Silver/dp/B000AO5N0S/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1395871465&sr=1-4&keywords=odyssey+1999

I don't know of any dual caliper brakes that long enough reach, and enough tire clearance to work with your beach cruiser.

u/mplsbikewrath · 3 pointsr/bikecommuting

Come to Minneapolis!

And yep, it's a Bell Drop. I've known enough folks who spent months drinking their meals (and I've had enough expensive dental work done) to wanna play it extra safe.

Edit: Fucked up faces suck, but I'm glad at least that you're alive. Hope you heal up quick and the other guy suffers some consequences.

u/daredevil82 · 1 pointr/MTB

I use these knee pads, and they work pretty well. There is an elbow pad version as well, but haven't used them.

If you want some hip protection, there are impact liners available. The one for womens is pretty low rated, so you might get away with the men's version.

u/larryt1026 · 3 pointsr/ElectricSkateboarding

I really want one of those myself because of the fox brand. However, there is a cheaper alternative on amazon. Demon United Podium Full Face Helmet black/Lrg https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079XR43BW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jAccBbMGJX1SV

u/cantbelieveitsbacon · 0 pointsr/MTB

Either is overkill if you're not into downhill, both in price and also heavy helmets are not fun to wear.
I can vouch for the [Bell Sanction full-face] (http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Sanction-BMX-Downhill-Helmet/dp/B00479MYE0) as a worthy alternative: it costs the third of these and is lighter. Read the reviews on Amazon.

u/pthu · 1 pointr/bikewrench

Bike cables are made from stranded spun wires that will stretch slightly with use (it's sort of like a ponytail that's kinda loose when tied and gets thin and long when you tug on it, except brake cables are made of metal), which is why bike shops generally offer a free tune-up after the first few months of ownership. It might be time to go through that Park Tool guide anyway.

If you want to upgrade pads, the most popularly recommended pads are Kool Stop in the salmon-colored material. I found these, but I've never used the half-salmon "dual compound" ones before. https://www.amazon.com/Kool-Stop-Bicycle-V-Type-Compound/dp/B001T35RSC

u/Hylian_Legend · 3 pointsr/longboarding

motor cycle helmets are heavy and will take a toll when turning your head.

instead, look into Bell Sanction and Bell Drop.

u/CamouflageTrousers · 6 pointsr/FixedGearBicycle

I use the KMC K710.
