I just did Paint the Point last month in Mineral Point, Wi. Some recommendations based on what I learned (but might not apply due to your medium/type of event).

  1. My plein air teacher taught me that the light changes about every 8 minutes. It's also close to impossible to paint the whole thing in that amount of time. Her suggestions were to do two things: take a picture and work around the light at first. (NB: some events don't allow pictures to be used as references at all)
  2. Be prepared to pack up everything you take out. Especially for oil painters, a baggie to put paper towels in is a must.
  3. Bring snacks and beverages. This removes those distractions and also can be a reason to take a break to get a new look on the subject.
  4. Wear dark clothing. This is generally smart in painting, but plein air in daylight and colors can really reflect onto your canvas/paper.
  5. If you're hiking in, trim down what you're bringing, be mindful that carrying that folding chair may be easy for a block, but a couple miles through trees? Nope. However, I got a SitGo for doing urban sketching and plein air painting and I love it.
  6. If you're in a competition, bring a frame, pen, paper, tape, and an easel to display the art.
  7. If you have business cards, bring them. Even in the middle of the woods strangers will find you and look at your art.
  8. Speaking of, if you're not a social person, headphones will help keep a bubble around you.
  9. Be prepared for things like wind to knock a pochade or easel box over. There are little hammocks you can make/buy that will go under your tripod/easel and can be filled with rocks to help keep it weighed down.
  10. Most everything can be ruined by rain. Be prepared to either cover or put away things quickly-including a wet canvas or pallette.
  11. If you're doing a nocturne, bring a lamp that can do both cold and warm light. I liked this little one which could have the brightness and color changed.

Since you’ve already gotten quite a few responses to all your questions, I’ll answer some of them. I only started cross stitching in March so I’m still kind of a beginner myself although it feels like I’ve stitched for ages!

“Where can you buy nicer hoops for framing completed projects?”
The brand Darice makes really nice hoops, imo. A search on Etsy for “darice embroidery hoops” returns quite a few results.

“What are the top 3 things every cross-stitcher should own?”
A hoop stand to hold your project while you stitch (I have this stand and love it: http://www.michaels.com/loops-and-threads-adjustable-craft-stand/10232941.html#start=6), a magnetic line minder to hold your pattern and help you keep track of the line of stitches you’re working on (https://www.hobbylobby.com/Yarn-Needle-Art/Cross-Stitch/Floss-Thread/Magnetic-Line-Minder/p/34733), and binder rings to keep the bobbins of floss for each project together (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074PHZK89/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ci7KBbKYXGMWC).

“Does anyone use a magnifying glass/light combo and if so, where would you purchase from?”
I have this light (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRU9SP0?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf) clipped to the top of my hoop stand and I absolutely love it. It has 3 different light colours and 2 light intensities for each light colour. It doesn’t really get hot and having the different light colours allows me to adjust the light for the floss colours/Aida colour of my project or depending on the time of day I’m stitching. I don’t have a magnifying glass yet.

“Any other tips for someone who has done 2-3 counted cross stitch patterns but is looking to improve skill?”
LOOP START!! My mother taught me to stitch and that’s the first thing she taught me. I’m always amazed when I read on reddit about people learning about loop start for the first time because I can’t imagine starting my stitches any other way. It only works when you’re use an even number of floss strands for your project. So if you’re wanting to use 2 strands of floss for your project, you only actually pull 1 strand from your floss, fold it in half and thread both ends into the eye of your needle, come in up the corner of your first stitch - but don’t pull your floss all the way through! - and then put the needle down through the floss loop on the back. Voila! Your floss is secured to your project. Also make sure you’re having fun! It’s not worth it to keep stitching when you’re frustrated by a pattern or lose interest in a pattern. Put the project down for a little while if you’re frustrated with the pattern or start a new pattern or work on another project if you lose interest in a pattern. It’s absolutely imperative that you have fun/enjoy yourself when you stitch.

It's legit just an LED light I got off Amazon. It fits perfectly in the mouth of the jar haha.

The one I bought right now is currently unavailable on Amazon, but there are others that are similar that would probably be just as good.
Clip on Light, HQOON Eye-Care Desk Lamp, Portable Book Light Clip on Desk, Bed Headboard and Computers, Gooseneck, 2 Lighting Color, USB Plug, 7W, Durable Clamp, Bedside Reading Light https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SCYGTC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_OzoPBb3JMZ7XT

One that looks similar:
6W LED USB Dimmable Clip on Reading Light,Clip Laptop Lamp for Book,Piano,Bed Headboard,Desk,Eye-care 2 Light Color Switchable, Adapter Included(Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074V34G49/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bCoPBbWDW9ZEX

It's 6W instead of 7W like mine, but it looks almost exactly like it.

u/SupergirlRicey · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

I'm super late but I use a book light almost exclusively to stitch. I have a stand and just clip it to the neck. Sometimes it casts a shadow but I also can clip it to my actual QSnap of I feel like it. I use two when I work on dark fabric, shining both from the front and the back.

[This is the one I use. ](luminolite bk-07 3000k warm led, easy for eyes, clip, car & travel, rechargeable slim 2.1 oz weight. perfect for bookworms book light for reading in bed, white https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077D8QXST/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_dVuaCbRDYE14N)

Edit: I also clip it to my QSnap when it's not on my stand and it doesn't weigh it down at all. Though I have to clip it to my actual snap and not when it's covered in a grime guard, it won't clip on that way.

I just bought one of these Mighty Bright Book Lights, and I'm happy with it so far. It wasn't too expensive, clips onto my book without being too heavy, and shines a nice bright reading light.

My wife ordered one this morning, because she wished she had mine.

u/Quant_Liz_Lemon · 42 pointsr/funny

The description is pretty clear...

> The Tiny Task LED Light isn't your average task light. A mere four inches tall, the Tiny Task LED Light is a miniature lamp reminiscent of traditional desk lights. It's cute. It's fun. And it's functional. You'll find yourself twisting its neck to bring the lampshade head to life. Push the LED on to illuminate the task at hand - or just leave the light on your desk for a little added spunk. We won't be surprised if you start making your own animated shorts featuring the Tiny Task Light.

I just bought a book light that hangs around the back of your neck, hoping it'll put the light where I want it without blazing out anybody's eyes and without the hassle of clip lights. And it is awesome. Bright, aimable, with a wide enough spread to get my whole hoop at once. I look pretty dorky 'wearing' it, but it does an amazing job for what I want.

u/Lumen00 · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

I really like these. It's lightweight, rechargeable, and I can clip it on a hoop or scroll frame. The one is 35 lumens bright. They also have one that's brighter and a smaller one. I had an Ottlite before, and the light was really nice, but it stopped charging all of a sudden after a few months.

u/JBaby_9783 · 3 pointsr/kindle

This is what I use with mine. If you find that it flips off too easily just add some grip to it. It’s worth it. I love this light!!!

u/DiDgr8 · 1 pointr/ereader

Most folks study and take notes in a well lit room and a built-in frontlight isn't needed. If you don't have that, there is always a booklight like this that works OK.

But bigger really is better for what you're doing.

u/Bigstar976 · 1 pointr/suggestmeabook

This is what I’m using and I absolutely love it. It’s rechargeable, each side light has three different brightness settings and you can bend the arms into any position you want. Also works real well for walking your dog early in the morning, btw.

u/ImThaBean · 2 pointsr/DIY

You are looking to make a over bed reading light. Those are expensive as I learned just now. A cheaper alternative is a headboard light. Look at the links below and get some inspiration. Head to your local big box home improvement store and make something out of nothing. McGyvering stuff is the best.

Over bed light, Headboard light, Etsy Inspiration

As for the spiders, depending on the gap, if small, some silicone will do, if its a big gap, some spray in expanding foam will stop it along with some insecticide.

u/stephenadam · 2 pointsr/RemarkableTablet

This is the one I liked best.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B079LYZCJ9?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

The light is a warmer 300k than many LEDs, it’s has 4 stages for light strength, with the lowest being very low and dim (which I prefer). It has a flat profile and recharged by plugging into a USB port. A single charge lasted me 3 weeks with an hour or so of use many days.

I clip mine to my case and then rest my tablet on the case as I write.

u/REUB3N_WILLARD · 2 pointsr/flashlight

My little sister had this same problem.

Now she uses my fulton mx-991/u

It has a warm incandescent bulb
It's extremely durable, mine survived Vietnam,
It doesn't shut off on its own, but it doesn't use a lot of power and runs off of 2D batteries, so it will run for days at a time.

But you can also for find book lights with timers on Amazon like this one

https://www.amazon.com/LIGHT-Fulcrum-20022-104-Multiflex-EcoReader/dp/B008S8X4CC?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

Another option would be a wind up flashlight.

u/100percentstupidbitc · 5 pointsr/CrossStitch

Are you thinking like lamp or just a small light to attach to your project? You can typically find little clip on book lights that you can attach to your hoop or frame like this or something that you can wear around your neck and adjust like this

u/nicolez120 · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

Is this like the one you got? There are so many different lights out there, I'm having a hard time narrowing them all down!

I think you should get yourself this light cause it can attach to a lot of things besides books so it seems like it'd be really useful of sorts. I think it'd be the most uses for your buck so to speak hehe.

Looks like if I were to buy this stuff today, I would end up turning off the kindle's backlight & using something like this LED Book Light, Warm/Cool White 6500K/3000K. Lower than 3000K would be better, but it's fine. Anyway, there it is. :D

u/Blastercorps · 2 pointsr/pens

Hmm, that's an interesting request. Most people want to see more than the word under the pen so they use a book light. And most light up pens are novelties, and use button batteries. I don't know of any high quality light up pens/pen lights. All my searches come up with promotional pens that use button batteries and you have to order 50+ of.

Try the Mighty Bright 47012 Book Light. It's lightweight, rechargeable, and seems to be just what you're looking for. Here's a URL link to amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Bright-47012-Recharge-Light/dp/B00NOP2JC0

u/dubyrunning · 3 pointsr/flashlight

This is the king of reading lights, in my opinion. Has three color temperatures ranging from 3000K to 6500K (love that 3000K at night!) and three brightness settings for each temperature. Has a battery indicator too. Nothing beats a clip-on book light for reading, especially one this nice and feature-rich. Goes for $11.39 on Amazon with the 5% coupon.

You can absolutely do it. Some tips:

  • Make a copy of the pattern before you start. I think all their patterns are downloadable so you can probably easily get another copy but just in case.

  • Organize the floss for your project. I used cardboard strips but if I had it to do over again I'd use these rings and plastic bobbins. Write the color number and the corresponding pattern color symbol on the plastic bobbin in Sharpie.

  • You're going to want to cross off each stitch on the pattern as you go, so treat yourself to a retractable highlighter. I recommend a colored one like pink or blue instead of the traditional yellow-- I've been using a yellow one and when I'm working on it at night sometimes it's hard to tell if I've marked a block or not.

  • I clamped a Mighty Bright book light to the top of my hoop and it's doing an admirable job of keeping me from going blind.

Get in there and start that sucker!
u/alfjan · 3 pointsr/crochet
