I strongly suggest to not be ideological about sound design. You will get much better results by using a variety of approaches.
So I will suggest two books.

That has a lot of theory and practice stuff.

But overall I just encourage you to experiment with all the tools available to you!
I'm not a great programmer or anything but here's my advice for what it's worth
Always take a bottom-up approach to a new language especially when it differs in fundamental concepts
For java I would recommend The complete reference or The new boston tutorials on youtube if you are a complete noob
I didn't have the same problems when starting out with java because I was already using OOP concepts with C++

Also, for those interested, you can buy the 8th edition of this book used on Amazon for a fraction of the cost of the 9th edition. A quick comparison of the table of contents shows an almost identical chapter structure, and there was less than 2 years between publications, so it's likely that not much changed between the two books.
Someone more knowledgeable in JAVA updates and the differences between them could probably better answer if anything significant happened between 2009 and 2011 that would justify the difference in cost between the two editions.

Ooohh... I will have to add that to my TODO list. I am currently reading through Practical Unit Testing with TestNG and Mockito, and it's pretty good so far. Admittedly, I got it to learn more about Mockito, but it's also a really nice introduction to TDD.

A great and intuitive textbook used at a lot of high-powered CS intro classes. Particularly useful for a "interview-level" understanding of OO and proper use of key data structures. Probably not enough info on algorithms, but you can use knowledge from this book to implement the key ideas in "Algorithms Unlocked,"

Software dev that has worked at many enterprise companies. I don't recommend you study any language or technology other than what you can't use right away. There is so much out there that is niche/obsolete/ever changing/saturated. I have studied so many things that I have never used and quickly forgot.
You need to study design concepts/dev methodologies/software architecture/design patterns/best practices.
Nothing beats working under a mentor.
Courses teach you what to think as a developer but you need to learn how to think as a developer.

I personally think Building Java Programs: A Back To Basic Approach, 4th edition by Stuart Reges and Marty Stepp is really helpful. It's what I started with.
I used this one in my CS days: Absolute Java
I liked it. This is the newest version. You can find an older version for real cheap.
If you want a deeper understanding of concurrency, the go-to book is Concurrency in Practice.
For Spring, the go-to book is Spring in Action.
The best book I've read for OOP is Agile Patterns, Practices and Principles for C#. The first 1/3 of the book is Agile stuff, but the rest is a wide variety of topics in OOP. There used to be a Java version of this book, but the newer version is C#. But the C# code is nothing to different than what you would do in Java.
Some of the previous students have recommended this book as an alternative to the Java Software Solution book. Apparently this one covers 1213, 1223, and even 1233. I'm also starting this Summer and picked the book up. Not sure about MyLab Programming though, what is that supposed to be for?

Try Core Java for the Impatient. Haven't read it myself, but it's sibling "Java 8 for the Really Impatient" which brought me up to speed (from Java 7) and it was a really good, fast overview.
If Core Java is remotely similar, it should be exactly what you're looking for.
