Hey there! I happen to draw a lot from Americana in my own style, so hopefully I can suggest some things you'll like~

Boots - this is the root of the style, imo. The difference between a punk inspried flannel and jeans and Americana-inspired flannel and jeans is in the boots. Look for an attractive workwear-inspired style. I own the Wolverine 1k Miles, which are out of your price range but should give you an idea of the style to look for. The Vintage Shoe Company makes some good boots that you can find on sale a little more easily, so does Danner, and even classic Timbs can be cool. You're not necessarily looking for an actual work boot, here, but something that looks like a cleaner version of a classic work boot style. I view my boots as my foundation piece, so definitely consider spending more on boots/saving up until you can afford the pair you like best. If you get a well-constructed boot (welted sole, durable high-quality leather, etc.) it can also double as a functional boot - I wouldn't ride in my W1KMs or muck out gross stalls in them, but I would feel totally comfortable doing chores around the yard, light hiking/trail walking, and other outdoor, potentially-dirty tasks.

What you absolutely do not want are busy modern hiking boots.

Jeans - One or two pairs of sturdy jeans in a skinny or slim cut, depending on your preferences, is enough. Jeans don't need to be babied, can go forever without washing (I wash mine only when they're totally stretched out), and look good with like every style. The FFA recommendation is to get an unfaded dark indigo wash, which will totally work. I would get a pair like this first. I will say that, as you're looking for a slightly more rugged/rural style, you should feel free to consider a second pair in a medium or light wash, so long as it is unfaded and undistressed. That means no tears, fraying, whiskering around the hips/knees, or lighter splotches of color on the fabric. These tend to be badly done. Levi's is a great place to start, but you should also do some reading over at /r/rawdenim and see if raw jeans appeal to you.

The most important part is fit - don't settle for jeans that stretch out too much or are too long or tight or whatever. You'll live in these things, so make them worthwhile.

Denim/Chambray - I have to admit I'm a total nut for denim and chambray anything, but especially shirts and jackets. Take a look at the styles here for starters - you might consider buying a denim or chambray button-up, a denim jacket, or even a denim vest. Chambray button-ups are very versatile and pretty popular right now, so they're really easy to find. But once you have a safe option, don't be afraid to try something a little crazy.

When wearing denim or chambray on top and bottom, be careful to wear distinctly different shades. Too close and you can end up in 'Canadian tuxedo' or 'denim jumpsuit' territory.

Flannel - this is an area I have not yet delved into, honestly. But a classic red flannel and a few other colors fit thematically with everything else here, so totes pick some up. I don't have great brand recs or examples pics, though. =(

Outerwear - You'll probably want about three different pieces of outerwear - a light jacket, a rain jacket, and a winter coat.

Light jacket: Consider a denim jacket or vest, as mentioned above. But another alternative is a barn jacket. (Also try searching for 'field jacket' and 'chore coat,' for similar styles) The ideal jacket is something kind of rough looking that is oversized enough to fit a sweater underneath, but not so big as to drown you. If it's washable, that's even better, so you can just soak it after a weekend at the barn and have it be clean in time for classes.

Rain Jacket: I'm a fan of parkas. Penfield sells some more cool styles, too, though I would avoid their bright colors. I prefer rain coats that cover my butt, but short ones are fine. Similarly to the light jackets, look for something that is purposefully a little oversized, for layering, but a relatively simple design (that is, not too tech-y or modern). Muted neutrals are cool. Get one with a goddamn hood.

Also consider some rain boots if your area gets a lot of rain - style isn't super important here, but I've linked two very popular pairs for you to take a look at.

Winter Coat: Wool. This is not the season for wool coats, so I don't have great product links, but wool coats are by far my favorites. I would buy a long coat, one that covers the butt, with a collar but no hood. Shop around for this, because good wool coats are expensive at full price but can be had for cheap late in the season. If you're not a fan of wool, something in the style of a quilted down barn jacket is also neat.

Sweaters - Think a big, chunky, cableknit sweater or cardigan. Layer with everything for maximum warmth and coziness. I'm a fan of 100% wool items, so I encourage you to consider that, but you'll see all sorts of cableknit sweaters when it cools down again in the fall. Again, consider a sweater that is not form-fitting, but rather one that skims your body. Pendleton makes some awesome woolens, and really cool western patterns, too, so their winter selection is something to keep in mind.

Misc Tops - Think 'body-skimming' and 'loose fit' when you're buying tops. The shoulder seams should still be close to your actual shoulders, but the body can loosely hang off of your curves, rather than clinging to them. I personally love Everlane tees, though any airy t-shirt will do. Muscle tees and loose tanks are the warm-weather version of this. Details like cuffed sleeves, racerbacks, and breast pockets can give an interesting little twist to an otherwise 'plain' shirt.

Other Shoes - Beater sneakers are great for walking and lazy days. Anything from plimsolls like Vans to even sportier shoes can be cool. I do think low-tops are a better stylistic fit than hi-tops, and really sporty things like (most) Nikes can be hard to reconcile with Americana. You could certainly wear Nike Frees with a tee and jeans, but they're probably not going to look great with jeans, flannel, and a barn coat.

Sandals are also worth getting if you're somewhere hot. Something chunky like Birks could be cool and totally college appropriate, but these are by far the least defined piece of footwear. The only things I would particularly avoid are thin-strapped, very feminine sandals.

Etc. - Get yourself a nice leather belt.

**

I didn't want to come across as too prescriptive, but I think I totally failed that. If you take anything away from this post, let it be that fit is key: in almost every category, you should look for items that are loose, not overly fitted, but
not too big*. Americana is about items we perceive as 'classic' workwear pieces, and workwear is traditionally worn loose. You don't want to get lost in a coat that's 2 sizes too large, but you're not aiming for a 'feminine' fit, either.

Thanks so much for giving me a chance to ramble. I hope this was at least somewhat useful. If you have any more questions at all, please ask me - I don't get to talk about this much, lol. Good luck!

I shop on Amazon because I get gift cards for work (camgirl). I'll list whatever I find in my order history - Apologies if it includes anything discontinued. I shop on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca as I am Canadian, so I'll include finds from both.

Loves

Bombsheller octopus leggings - They don't carry these on Amazon anymore, but last I checked, they do allow you to pay via Amazon on their website. The size chart was off when I first ordered them so I exchanged them for a size up, and the company was very accomodating. The leggings are comfy and sturdy.

Jellyfish socks - Adorable and well made. Definitely plan to purchase more designs from this seller.

Snowpants - I don't wear these a lot since I'm more the summer outdoorsy type, but they were excellent for walking my ex's dog in the winter and I still occasionally wear them for running errands on foot when it's really cold out.

Burned velvet leggings - I bought these in "blurple" and adore them. They're slightly sheer, so I wear other leggings underneath (these ones from eBay do the trick).

Anna-Kaci search result link - Anna-Kaci is an awesome vendor with well priced attire. I listed the vendor since the specific items I purchased are no longer available.

Thigh high socks - I have found these cheaper on amazon.ca, but this was the first pair I bought. Cute and sturdy! I now have 3 more pairs on their way!

Zebra print scarf - I was impressed by the quality of this one. I did donate it when I was gifted a similar scarf in black/gray as I try not to keep duplicates of non-essentials, but I would still have it otherwise.

Timberland knee high boots - Bought these in black, and they are probably one of my favorite Amazon purchases ever. If I were to ever re-buy these, I'd go a half size up, as I had to get them professionally stretched once they arrived, but holy fuck I love these boots. Waterproof, and fantastic quality. They're my go-to boots and I wear them more than any other piece of footwear I own.

Underbust belt - I'm not huge on the price tag, only because I once bought a nearly identical one on clearance pre-breast-augmentation. I'm glad I was able to buy this one post-op since the old one stopped fitting though. Will buy in more colors if they ever go on sale.

Booties - Pleasantly surprised by the quality! Will definitely consider buying more if I ever want/need them in different colors. Comfier for longer wear than most of my other heels, too.

Suspender Skirt - I love this thing so much, I bought two more on eBay after buying this one in black. This one's definitely better quality than the other two, though. I'd recommend wearing them with a shorts slip since there's not a lot of length to them. I'm actually really sad that they don't ship this to Canada anymore, otherwise I'd buy a couple more colors.

Beechfield beanie - This is definitely more my style when it comes to fit, but isn't as warm as the cable knits. Definitely one of my go-to hats.

Likes

Wet look batwing top - Surprised by the fit/quality for the price. Fabric looks/feels a bit cheap but overall the piece is well made.

Chunky cable knit beanies - I ordered this hat in olive, mustard, and teal. They're comfy, warm, and feel well made. I find them to be a little too bulky for my head, so I'm trying to stretch them out/break them in a bit. Definitely personal preference though, and not a quality issue.

Glitter loafers with spikes - They're gorgeous, but not high quality. I'd put them under "meh" for lifespan, but I did love them up until they started falling apart.

Holo creepers - I really need to wear these more, but my day-to-day fashion is much more casual and I don't party like I used to. Working my way towards wearing them more. The quality is decent but I don't think they'll last forever.

JollyChic search result link - JollyChic is great for cheap-ish stuff. I've bought from them a number of times and rarely been disappointed. Some of their synthetic stuff smells chemically at first (shiny leggings being one) but the smell dissipates after a couple washes. Their customer service is also stellar. Shared the search results since the specific items I ordered are no longer listed.

Iron Fist sweater - Bought in a size small, fits more like a medium. Will be shrinking it.

Waist belt - Great quality for the price (~$13CAD if I recall correctly). Fit is a little stiff, so it can look a little boxy with some outfits as it isn't flexible around curves, but overall still nice.

Meh

Faux fur vest #1 - Not the worst quality, but definitely felt cheaper than a couple other vests I own. Ended up selling it since the size chart was off and I didn't love it enough to exchange it for the right size.

Faux fur vest #2 - Slightly lower quality than #1, but same deal - Size chart was inaccurate, but not worth exchanging so I sold it.

Thermal leggings - Smelled awful at first, but it went away overtime. They are still pretty warm even after washing/wearing them for a couple years now, but they pill, so they're not the most aesthetically pleasing. Great for layering, but would not buy again.

Skull cardigan - It's cute and cozy. I wear it around the house more than out, since I noticed after washing it that the bottom corners started curling up a bit due to shrinkage. Also wish it was a tad bit longer.

Spiked slouch beret - The creases are a little harder than I wanted/expected, so I'm trying to stretch it out/break it in a bit. I have other hats that I like more though, so this one doesn't get a lot of love and might just end up being donated.

Leg warmers - Quality-wise, they should be in the "loves" section, but I bought these back when I was on a wild spree to better prepare myself for winter, and while I do love how warm they are, the patterns/colors just aren't my style.

Digital print tanks - The quality is about what I expected for the material, but I found the fit to be off on most of them (especially in the armpit area). I modified a few for a better fit, but mostly I wear them as slips now. The material is perfect for layering under sweaters that normally "grab" onto cotton camis. They can definitely be found cheaper elsewhere, though.

Fleece lined leggings - I bought these in damask, which I guess is no longer available. They're completely matted on the inside now, and not what I'd call "fleece lined" anymore. Still pretty on the outside, but definitely no good for warmth.

Downright Awful

OURS vendor search results - Seriously, don't buy anything from OURS. Their photos are stolen from other brands and the quality of their clothes are laughably poor. I threw them away rather than donate them because I knew that they would never be rebought, even at thrift store prices. They were the worst. Woooorst.

Bikini - The shittiest shit that ever shitted. Everything about it was just awful.

I relate so much, because I too am a mommy who needs practicality and comfort but would also still like to feel pretty and female sometimes! I think little touches can go such a long way. Things with just a touch or lace, for example. Or jewelry. I mean, if you could find some quality, understated, feminine earrings that go with almost everything and that you really like (matching bracelet or necklace optional) just 1-2 subtle pieces of jewelry alone can do so, so much to dress up and and feminize an outfit. And yes pearls or zirconium can go with black and ripped up jeans. Shabby chic. Also, investing in a nice, polished-looking, grown-up woman handbag, in black to go with your stuff (and in a zip-top tote style with lots on storage and inner pockets to go with your lifestyle if you ask me) might be nice and take your whole look up a notch and do more than you'd think to feminize your outfits. A pair of super comfy but feminine/sophisticated/slightly dressier looking shoes in black could have the same effect. Shoes and accessories can do so much to "upgrade" a look.

OK, sorry if that was a bit of a tangent, because you were asking more specifically about adding soft colors, florals, lace and such. Not about adding earrings, a quality handbag and pair of flats :P
I think the way you can do what you're talking about without feeling awkward is to not overdo it all at once and not introduce too many touches in any one given outfit.

For example, if you go for lace, then skip the pastel colors and stay black. The lace itself is already going to be super feminine, the black will look good with the clothes you already have in your closet, and you won't feel like you're trying too hard and making some glaring departure from your normal style. Maybe something like this top in black?

Same with florals. If you go for florals, go for a subtle floral(this could mean a small print or a dark print or just a low dosage of a lighter/bolder floral- a little splash somewhere).
For example, a pair of black floral patterned rain boots would be practical and comfy while also being pretty/feminine, and they already would go with all your slim/skinny jeans and black apparel. (If by chance you like those, there's also the very similar "black botanical" on this listing. And I am also very partial to that bees pattern!)

And finally following the same subtle-modifications theory, if you want to add some soft color in, you go for a simple tank or tee in a cut you would be fine wearing in black, and let that be enough of girliness for one outfit, leave the lace and florals and skirts for another day... that way the addition feels manageable and not awkward. for example you could do a simple top like this
in the amethyst or petal pink or daffodil, with your black pants or jeans, and your vans and your favorite cardi or hoodie layered on top. It's just same old you with a little infusion of fresh feminine color.

And then just play and have fun with those kinds of small bite-size additions.

You already feel comfortable in black and in sneakers, so how about a pair of black sneakers embroidered with tiny cherries? You don't have to change anything else, wear them with your ordinary clothes. Or, if you want to lighten up the outfit, you just add a feminine cut white/off white tee that will play off the white soles of the sneakers. Nothing else changes, your same black or blue jeans, your same favorite black zip down hooded sweatshirt, whatever. On the other hand if you want to add a pop of color to your outfit, you could paint your nails the same shade of cherry red the shoes have going on. OR you wear a long line tee in cherry red. NOT BOTH, one is enough, and all your other usual clothes can stay. Or some other thing. Whatever floats your boat. Superga has sneaks in pastel ginghams, too.

Those links are just random examples but I hope the main idea I was trying to get across came through!

Sorry I rambled on so long. Good luck, have fun!

Oooo I can actually add to this thread! I've kind of gone crazy over the past week.

Target Universal Thread collection buys:

-Dark high waisted jeans I LOVE these. They fit really really well. I'm normally about a 28 and I picked these up in an 8. I have the issue of having bigger thighs and a smaller waist and these surprisingly fit so great. The shape didn't change much after washing and drying that I could tell. I took them out of the dryer after drying them 75% of the way and let them airdry the rest of the way.

-Gold cami This is actually great despite the reviews. I like the fabric and it looks great tucked in.

-This tee in gold. Haven't worn this or tried it on yet, just really liked the color.

Stuff not from the UT collection:

-This button down in grey. SUPER soft and drapes really well.

-These shoes in Taupe. I never really wear sandal heels, so I'm giving these a go to see if I'll actually wear them. They're actually really comfortable.

Other things:

-I got this Kate Spade crossbody on Poshmark. I wanted a big & comfortable enough crossbody to travel with and stick a water bottle in. Hopefully this fits the bill.

-This jumpsuit in black. I never seem to look good in jumpsuits, so I'm hoping this one works. We'll see!

-These Clarks in black. I really need a casual, comfortable black shoe to wear to work and I think these are it. Hoping the brown bottom doesn't throw off clean lines too much. I liked these Dansko's more, but I can't justify their price.

-These Kenneth Cole shoes at the recommendation of someone on here. Still waiting for these bad boys to come in :) edit: these came in today and they’re seriously the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on out of the box. I’m in love.

-Another of my favorite bra. Note to anyone thinking of purchasing--purchase down a band size because it will stretch out. I'm normally at 36B and I purchase a 34B instead. It's a little tight at first, but it's worth dealing with for it to fit correctly in the long run. I love these because they don't dig into my back and create unflattering rolls.

-Wanted to try this shirt in navy out from American Eagle. Still not sure on the fit. I'm normally a medium and the small swallows me whole. It might work tucked in.

-These Sorel sandals at the recommendation of someone on here. Anxiously awaiting these! Edit: got them today and they’re great, except part of the heel rubs my left foot. I think they’ll be fine after they break in, though.

-These linen trousers in black. I normally wear a 6 and the 4 fit perfectly. Perfect length to wear with wedges. Excited to wear these!

My mom bought me my expensive prom dress, winter boots, and purse as presents, since once I stopped growing she thought it was worth spending more for things that will hold up and keep me warm (and for the prom dress, she wanted to spoil me for getting good grades in high school).

As for things I bought myself:

  • Gold class ring (with matching steel one), ~$450 ($70).

Why did I buy it? At my college almost everybody got the ring. It's very recognizable, there's a big to-do about choosing a student committee to design the unique features for that year's ring, they announce the design, there's a big event when the rings are delivered, and everyone flips their rings around together at commencement to signal that we've graduated. The gold one is for fancy events and interviews, and the steel one I wear every day since it can get banged around.

Was it worth it? Yes. I don't wear the gold one much, but I'm glad I have it and it makes me feel fancy when I do wear it. Other alumni have recognized me by my ring, so it kind of acts as a beacon for that. The company that sells the rings also lets students spread out the payments over 6 months with no interest, so it was less painful for college me and I was proud that I bought it for myself.

  • Frye Martina engineer boots, $210

Why did I buy them? Part of it was for the name, and I wanted a pair of boots that wasn't knee-high. I liked the style of these well enough and they were much cheaper than some other Frye boots I was considering, so I pulled the trigger.

Was it worth it? Mostly. I do like how solid they feel and the leather is very soft and a pretty reddish brown color. They make me feel a little bit too cowgirl sometimes, though, and I can't walk in them all day and still be comfortable (I pretty much wear flat shoes otherwise). I got insoles for them and that helps somewhat, though I also had a misstep while navigating through some sidewalk construction and twisted my ankle. I probably wouldn't buy them again. That said, I am looking forward to wearing my boots again in fall, including these.

  • ONA Capri camera bag, $350

Why did I buy it? I wanted a grown-up leather bag that I could use for traveling--something that could fit a lot of stuff, protect my nice camera, and still look stylish.

Was it worth it? I haven't used it that much yet, but I will on my upcoming trip to Japan (real soon!). I carried it without the DSLR during Outsidelands, and it was pretty comfortable (other than biking there) and kept everything organized well. The strap is kind of long, so I have to choose between having the bag high enough on me or being able to use the shoulder pad, which doesn't fit over the buckle. But it's a lovely bag and I'm glad I got it.

Hi, everyone! big wave. I am very thankful I have found this sub. I love fashion, and admittedly do not know a lot about it. I have always loved looking at outfits online and finally decided now was the time to put myself together!! However, for me, it is the worst time to do this. We are currently on a tight budget, so it has been difficult. I am just focusing on picking up a few staple pieces for the time being and making drool-worthy Pinterest pages for future shopping sprees. :)

I am currently looking for a pair of ankle boots. I would prefer they be around (or below!) a $50 price point. Maybe $60 if they are amazing. I was looking through the ankle boot thread on here with the recommendations and was blown away with the beauty of the boots as well as the price tags. Can anyone recommend a brand that would have quality ankle boots at that price point? Preferably a brand I could find on Amazon, as I have a gift card from Christmas loaded and ready to be spent! I found a pair of White Mountain ankle boots in TJ Maxx on clearance for $22. I know nothing about this brand, though. Are they quality? Fashionable? I have not worn them yet and can return them if I find something else. Also, do I need to cuff my skinny jeans above my ankle boots? I don't wear a lot of leggings or jeggings. Mostly skinny jeans. What is the proper way to wear them? I have been staring at women's feet while I have been out lately and I truly hope I haven't bothered anyone by doing so. I figured it was better to take my questions online than to be a creeper, haha!

I am usually a t-shirt and jeans type of girl, but have really been trying to shift my style to more feminine, flirty, vintage/boho, romantic and whimsical. I really like pink, pastels, and florals and just want to try and dress more girly. I'm looking for ankle boots in brown or black. I have fallen in love with these (in the brown), but, yeah, it's not gonna happen right now!

http://www.amazon.com/Sam-Edelman-Womens-Letti-Black/dp/B017JKZGZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454204865&sr=8-1&keywords=Sam+Edelman+Women%27s+Letti+Boot

They don't have to be so embellished, though, for what I am looking for right now. I don't know if there are any ankle boots that fit the description of the style I am looking to wear, but if there are, I would love to hear them! While I'm on the topic, can anyone suggest any stores that may have (affordable) clothes in the style I am seeking? I'm looking to start building a wardrobe more in the spring when the spring/summer outfits are out but want to start researching where I can shop and how to most effectively spend my money.

Thank you in advance for your help. I really appreciate it as I start my budget-conscious fashion journey! :) Thank you for making it through my long post!

Okay, you want to read the Barking Dog Shoes blog. She's an amazing resource for finding comfortable shoes, and has a lot of things specifically for bunions.

Naot is my favorite brand ever for comfortable shoes, and they use nice soft leather, and have super comfortable footbeds. You should look at them on their website where they're grouped by footbed type though, because a lot of the fancier styles explicitly run narrow. These shoes should be good for bunions, not sure if any of them work for your style: 1 2 3. There's a lot more options if you like mary janes or ankle straps.

Dansko has a few surprisingly stylish options, and many people love them for comfort. 1 2

Alegria has a lot of truly awful shoes, but a few cute ones, and incredible amounts of toe room. 1

Hotter is often well liked. These flats are nice for a more girly look.

Munro uses a combination last, so the heel is narrower than the forefoot. You need to order a wide, because a regular width Munro shoe has an AA heel with a B forefoot, while you want the B heel with D forefoot, which is their wide shoe.

If you want bunion friendly ugly chic, go for Fly London.

Camper might be worth a try 1

Jambu has lots of toe room, although they mostly do casual flats or very chunky heels. Arcopedico has super soft uppers, and some of their styles look good on (never off though, because of the soft uppers). If you've got the budget, a lot of Fluevogs are very foot friendly. The non clog Crocs can be decent, although for bunions avoid the styles that add thickness to the toe, like their cap toe styles. Edit: Josef Seibel also uses amazing leather.

I can't really comment on how stylish the shoes are, because I'll pretty much wear anything to avoid foot pain.

You probably should go to some of the comfort brand stores to try on a bunch of shoes to see what works for you. The Walking company carries a lot of brands, while New Balance carries all of New Balance, Aravon, and Cobb Hill, and there's Ecco, Clarks, and so on with their own stores. You might also have a nice local shoe store that specializes in comfort brands.

Basics, bitches! Lots of basics.

  • I found this Soma wirefree bra and now I wear nothing else unless it's a special occasion. I even fall asleep wearing these, they are so comfortable.

  • I live in Old Navy vintage tees when I'm at home. I'm kind of an expert in pjs and these tops are the best. Super soft, don't shrink when dried on medium, and nice enough to throw a bra on and run errands in. The lighter colors can be sheer.

  • For plain regular t-shirts, I love the GAP favorites line in short-sleeve scoopneck, long-sleeve v-neck, and long-sleeve crew-neck. These shirts are nice and thick and also don't shrink when dried on medium.

  • I love the Bath and Body Works shea-infused socks. I buy a couple of pairs each year, and they keep my feet so warm while providing a little traction on the wooden floors. On really cold days I will wear them with my boots. I wash them with my regular clothes. While the stickies on the bottom will peel off eventually, none of them have gotten to the point that I decided to toss them, and I think I have been buying them for four years? During the winter holidays is usually when they have the best selection, usually with cute little animals!

  • Let's talk underwear. Almost every day, I wear 100% cotton Hanes bikinis. Sometimes I'll go crazy and wear a boyshort. But 100% cotton, always and forever.

  • For fancy/no-panty-line occasions, there's only one answer - the Hanky Panky retro lace thong. Expensive, yes. Worth it? Totally. The thong part is very comfortable, doesn't dig in the front OR back, and the best part is that the high rise of the stretch lace smooths out that little pooch I have in front. It doesn't creep, doesn't bunch, and sits well under tights, skirts, and dresses.

  • The Hanes Solutions Super Opaque Tight in Maximum Blackout Coverage is the best black tight I've found. It's the tight I wear in most of my fits, and while there is a little shine, there is no show-through at all.

  • I am a firm believer in the 'leggings are not pants, cover your butt' school of thought, so I have this high-low hem shirt and this tunic, both in black, to go with my collection of printed leggings. They are both loose-fit and drape very nicely.

  • While buying multiples of clothing isn't unusual for me, there's only one time I bought multiples of boots. I have the Franco Sarto Trooper boot in black, gray, and claret, a dark reddish-brown. The boots are so comfortable and sleek-looking. They go with everything, and the elastic in the back ensures a perfect fit for wider calves. They even have a wide-calf version, although my calves are 17' around and I could still wear the regular size.

  • As far as regular shoes go, I think we all know I'm a big fan of the Vans slip-on.

I spent waaaaay too much money this weekend:

This BCBG blouse from Saks Off Fifth. Wore it to work today and got a ton of compliments. Fits great, super comfortable, and made it through the workday without getting wrinkled. Win!

Bought a similar Equipment silk dress to similar this number, but mine is a solid leafy khaki color. It's a great length. Tech office appropriate but not stuffy.

Just ordered these booties online after trying them on in-store. Soooooo comfortable. And they're water and stain resistant! For the heel height, they are stupid comfortable. I have days at my job that require a lot of time-on-feet but I still need to look professional. These are perfect. Comfortable and still put together.

Discovered a love for Levi's jeans, and picked up their "shaping" skinnies. Very flattering and comfortable. Great length for my 5'6" legs. They run pretty big. I usually wear a 27 or 28 and had to size down to a 26.

Was also talked in to dropping serious dough on a Guerlain perfume by a very convincing sales associate, and sorta regret it...but honestly I catch whiffs of myself in passing and the scent lifts my mood in such a spectacular way. It smells like eating cookies by a fire with my boyfriend, and he's drinking a glass of whiskey. Is that too specific? Either way, it's boozy and vanilla, but not gourmand.
I regret the price, but the scent is just so beautiful it's hard to be mad about it.

Last but not least: I went to some bougie sushi restaurant in SF that had this soap in their bathroom, and I've been thinking about it ever since. It's nice. It's expensive for a hand soap, but the scent is unisex and pleasant, and the bottle is bloody massive.

I may have spent too much time and effort putting together this post, oops! My shoe game is pretty good in the winter because I love boots, and boots are what you wear in the winter. I'll still wear some of my boots in the summer since it doesn't get too hot in Seattle most of the time. I need my shoes to be comfortable enough to walk in, so no crazy heels or flimsy sandals with cardboard soles. My job has no dress code, so I have no desire to own loafers, flats, or dainty heels.

Cold/wet weather shoes:

Black leather lace-up boots: No link, but it's a pretty typical combat-style boot. This boot summarizes my shoe aesthetic. You may notice I have a thing for lace-up boots after looking at the next few listed shoes.

Waterproof black leather lace-up boots: I wear these almost all the time during the winter because they're my warmest, most waterproof boots. They have garbage traction for anything frozen, though.

Heeled black leather lace-up boots: The heel is chunky enough for me to maintain my balance, and the sole is grippier than my waterproof boots. I feel like a badass bitch in these shoes.

Red suede lace-up ankle boots: Can't find a link, but it's the boots in this outfit. I looove these shoes. I saw them on my college's buy/sell page last year for $25 so I snagged them.

Black suede ankle boots: Just another ankle boot. Kinda fancy looking. I'm salty that I bought them for $40 more than they're listed now.

Pointy black leather ankle boots: I originally wanted Acne Jensens, but I wasn't about to drop that much money on a pair of shoes, not even used. So I got these used off of Poshmark. I feel like a badass witch in these shoes. They feel uncomfortably tight in the morning every time I wear them, but they stretch out over the day.

When winter rolls back around, I want to get a pair of the classic 6-inch Timberland boots or something like that. I could really use the traction and warmth for the rare occasion I'm trying not to slip on snow.

Warm weather shoes:

Black Nike frees: I wear this more often than I'd like to admit. They're very comfortable and don't look like complete garbage with my casual outfits.

Gray Vans: Just another casual sneaker.

Mint green converse: I got these originally because they were cheap at TJ Maxx, and I needed a new pair of flat shoes for lifting. I ended up replacing these with another pair (Asics Matflex) with a thinner and grippier sole, so now I wear these casually.

Black reef sandals: My go-to sandal in the summer. Rubber sole, elastic straps. Easy to put on, comfortable, and doesn't look like garbage. Not enough arch support for a long day of walking, though.

Rainbow flip flops: I've still yet to break these in to a point that they're comfortable. I like the arch support, though.
I'm currently searching for another pair of sandals with good arch support. I'm thinking of going down the Birkenstock route, but I'm open to other options.
I also like the aesthetic of all-black high-top converse, but I can't bring myself to buy another pair since they fall apart so easily.

Workout shoes:

Adidas Adipowers: My most expensive shoes, and they only serve a single purpose. Sob.

Asics Matflex: Flat, grippy, but a pain to put on. I wear them in the gym for anything but squatting.

Blue Nike pegasus: Good for running, makes me feel like I'm on a cloud.

I think "nobody cares" is a lazy answer. The OP is trying to fit in with the locals and get some advice on the local style.

Germans do not wear very much makeup and a lot of women here do not wear makeup at all. A friend visiting from LA remarked about it, how when she did her normal routine she felt very "made up" compared to everyone else. On the other hand, especially in Munich people tend to dress more formally than Americans do. Back in the US, I would wear sweat pants and flip flops to go grocery shopping, but if you do that here you look like a homeless person. I almost never go out without jeans or black leggings.

As far as winter fashion, I highly recommend buying a parka-style jacket in a dark color. By that I mean a jacket with a hood and long enough to cover your butt. Something like this. Germans also wear a lot of scarves, I never used to wear them but now I use one all the time. Really helps to keep your neck warm. And definitely get a pair of ankle boots. I never wore something like that in my life (also lived in a hot climate), but they are perfect for walking in mushy snow and keeping your feet warm and dry. Those I recommend to just buy here in Munich, then you can see the local styles and they should not be too expensive. Go to Marienplatz, there is tons of shopping and department stores where you can get shoes and jackets.

Also, if lots of your shoes are heels, just keep in mind you have to walk a LOT more in Munich than you did back home. And there are cobble stones, and stairs, and puddles, and rain, and snow, etc. And Germans do not wear shoes inside the house. So I realized, wearing nice heels just means I have to suffer on the way to visit a friend, and then take them off as soon as I get there! What is the point of that!?! I stopped wearing heels completely after the first year, so consider leaving your strappy sandals at home. It will be too cold for them anyway.

Will you be staying until summer? In summer the usual "rules" are relaxed a lot and you see more people wearing shorts and casual clothes. People in Munich love going to the river and outdoor pools, so there is a little more beach style on hot days and you could get away with more bright colors in that time of year. When I moved here I had brought a lot of sleeveless shirts and sundresses with me, but got rid of them all because it is so rarely warm enough to wear them.

These are so fun

edit: also all of this is already on my WL, i forgot to say that. EDIT: I stopped being lazy and came back and found the ones I was missing, so they're not on my WL but I specified that by each of them

1. Something grey I guess this is really silver... oops.

2. Reminiscent of the rain Not on my WL

3. Something food related that's unusual

4. Something for someone else - My girlfriend had a stroke last year and when she was in the hospital on all her medication she was telling me she wanted a Pooh Bear pillow pet and her grandma got her a "happy napper" in the shape of a bee or something and she spent days telling me she
needed a Pooh Bear pillow pet and I've looked everywhere for one for her since last July but I can't find one!

5. A book you need to read - This is the book A Christmas Story was kind of based on and that's my favorite Christmas movie because it's
hilarious.

6. Under $1
Not on my WL

7. Something related to cats

8. Something not useful but so beautiful I must have it

9. A movie everyone must watch - My best friend saw this a few years ago on TV and when she was telling me about it I thought it sounded so stupid but she made me come over and watch it anyway and it's seriously the funniest movie I've ever seen. Anyone who likes movies that are kind of stupid-funny absolutely needs to see it because I laugh so hard every single time.

10. Something that would be useful when zombies attack - An external charger in case your phone dies when you're not around somewhere you can plug it in when you're out fighting or hiding from zombies would be super important so you can stay in contact with people and make sure they're not turned into/being eaten by zombies

11. Something that has had an impact on your life - Highlighting things for school so I can find them later has been more helpful than listening during class. Except I go crazy and highlight the entire page.

12. An add-on item

13. Most expensive item - My explanation for this is the biggest "first world problem" in the universe, but oh well. I'm a college student and my current computer is a desktop so I can't take it to class with me or work on stuff before class in the student lounge and I can't lay in bed and watch Netflix and when I move across the country soon after graduation, I'm gonna have to pack it all up and move it with me and it's gonna take up so much space and it's just such a pain. Plus, this computer is getting kind of old and slow and it'll randomly just turn off and it's so annoying and I've tried everything to fix it and everything that people who have looked at it have told me haven't been able to help and I'd really rather just get a new computer because it would be so much easier for the future. Wow, that sounded so whiny.

14. Something bigger than a bread box

15. Something smaller than a golf ball

16. Something that smells wonderful

17. SFW toy

18. Something that would be helpful going back to school. - I have class 3 hours a day, 5 days a week and I get starving sitting there that long so I always try to take something with me to eat, but it's so annoying to try and find something to put it in or have it get crushed in the packaging and stuff.

19. Something related to your current obsession

20. Something so amazing you must see it - IT'S A BIG BOX OF GEL PENS, NOTHING IS COOLER! I remember when they sold them at the store by my grandma's when I was like 8 and they were like $2.79 each so I could never get any, when I finally could get them they weren't cool anymore but I still loved them.

BONUS - Something made in Oregon. *Not on my WL

Fear cuts deeper than words ! :)

Posting on behalf of a female friend who is looking for a nice pair of leather boots.

Price range ~$200-250USD. Second hand is perfectly acceptable, so a more common brand/style (to increase chances of finding a second hand pair for sale) which would be outside of this price range for retail would be fine, too.
(I may also be able to convince her to increase her budget for a particularly nice pair).

  • They must be lace-up.
  • They must not have a zipper.
  • The taller the shaft of the boot the better, but it's not a strict requirement that they be taller than an ankle boot.
  • She has mentioned liking quite a few pairs with a thick/wide heel with some height to it.
  • A goodyear welt is a nice bonus but not a strict requirement.
  • Quality should be appropriate for the price.

She says these look great but it'd be nice if they weren't $400USD and we're unsure of the quality (I suspect the quality will not match the price). She says these are gorgeous but the zipper is a deal-breaker.

(I have already run a search on e-bay with filters for size, materials, lace-up and brands from this list.)

Help of any kind is much appreciated, thanks!

Daily Go-To: Black ballet flats. I'm kind of tall (5'8") so I'm rarely looking to add height. I wear ballet flats almost every day; if not to work, then on errands or going out. I like that they're dainty-looking and chic, don't call attention to my feet, and are comfortable and relatively practical. They've been my signature item for more than ten years. After wearing holes to the ground in countless cheap Target flats, my current favorite are the Sam Edelman Charlotte. Comfortable, durable, leather outer and soft fabric inner. Amazing. I wear them with Washable Insoles so they don't get so gross. I've been trying to find a brown pair I like as well with no luck currently.

Boots: I own two pairs of boots: cheap black ankle boots with a 2" block heel, and the Frye Courtney in Cognac. The cheap ones are nice because they still look okay, are relatively water resistant, and were so cheap (I think I got them at KMART?) I don't care about wearing them through mud, slush, etc. The Fryes are, naturally, amazing. Soft leather, sturdy sole, great ankle support, no break-in period. I baby them a little but I LOVE them.

Heels: I wear heels to work 2-4 days a week. I usually wear knee-length skirts and dresses so I find heels to be the most flattering. My favorites are a black Naturalizer t-strap I thrifted that look like character shoes, and Seychelles vintage-look heels. I have the Dolly in brown and black. I also have dark brown wedge sandals and plain black court pumps that get regular rotation. I find the Seychelles sooo comfortable: secure straps, sturdy heels, dainty cut, and soft leather that conforms to my foot instead of pinches.

Sandals: I really just hardly ever wear sandals since I'd rather wear flats. I have dressier wedge sandals I wear to work and one pair of strappy AE "leather" flat sandals. I would actually really like to find a pair of flat sandals I love, but have had no luck finding ones that meet my wishlist. One day.

I don't spend too much money on everyday clothes (I shop mainly at consignment stores) but for me the expenses lie in the work-out equipment.

Three expensive (for me) purchases I don't regret:

Running spandex: Lululemon Inspire Crop II, $86. Why — to run! Worth it — yes; I have had a pair for two years and even though I dry them in the dryer they've only recently started to really wear.

Running shoes: Asics GT 2170, $110 (I paid more like $90). Why — to start running for real! Worth it — absolutely; they are extremely comfortable for my foot/gait type and have held up.

Hiking boots: Vasque Wasatch GTX, $130 (I paid ~110). Why — to go on backpacking trips! Worth it — hell yes! They are supportive but not too heavy, and feel like they're brand-new after three years.

I do regret buying a fugly Paul's Boutique purse in high school, but it's not like I miss that ~100 right now.

My Sam Edelman Penny boots ALWAYS get compliments! Very classic riding boot, so if that's not what you're looking for obviously I'm no help. But IMO they look more expensive than they are, and are pretty good quality considering they're actual leather.

u/TheBluePenguin9 · 2 pointsr/femboy

they were my 2nd pair of heels. They look great, and I found them really comfortable. To confirm they are the same heels I put a link to them on amazon here

Here are the shoes. TBH they'd look pretty great if they had some LEDs in them around the top.

I'm currently wearing these Doc Martens , which I got years ago, and love, they are holding up great.

I'm sometimes wearing these Rocket Dog boots, which I got because they are cheap, they seem to keep water out, and while they are kind of loose, it means they are quick to get on and go out, easy to wear with skirts.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get these.

Personally the three classics for me:

Leather or suede booties with some kind of cut-out to help elongate the leg

Waterproof boots

Riding boots, especially brown ones

I'm not a fan personally of over the knee boots, and I prefer flat boots unless it's a block heel on an ankle boot, like this.

Black like my cold dead heart. You can see them here.
