Hey there, P90X and Insanity grad who lost his body about two years ago after work/marriage/children. I've made it a mission to get my weight/health back on track since the beginning of the year, and like you, only have 30 minutes a day. Unlike you, I'm much more cardio focused, but lifting has been a huge help for me. So that said, I've been doing Max:30 since the beginning of the year, along with the lifting workouts from P90X3, and a few other programs sprinkled in as well.

Anyways, that's my backstory. I have sort of a ramble of thoughts that I figured would give you some food for thought on all of this. Also I've added headers, because this got super out of control.

Thoughts on T25 and Max:30

First, I've done T25 (just individual workouts, not the whole program) and Max:30, and I've gotta say, I was super disappointed with T25. This is actually the one I dreaded, which is a word I saw mentioned, it was truly painful to want to hit play because it's not a very intense program at all. On the flip side, of every BeachBody program I've done (I've done a lot of them) Max:30 is truly the best one I've ever done. Like, it's absolutely perfect. It's 30 minutes, no frills, you get straight to business and after 30 minutes you're done.

Like you're thinking, though, 80%+ of Max:30 is cardio. The remaining 20% is a lot of body exercises, and those are mainly bundled into the Tuesday/Thursday workouts from the program. Ironically, those were my least favorite workouts in the whole program (and a few other Max:30 grads I've spoken with have agreed).

For that final reason, on my second round of Max:30 (currently on Week 2 of that program) I've completely swapped out the Max:30 body-weight routines for P90X3 lifting ones. So far I'm super happy with the switch.

The best program to gain muscle mass

As far as gaining mass goes, the single best program is Body Beast. There's just no comparison. I did this one back in 2012 and my upper body has never looked better. It's a truly amazing program. This is the program I want to do the most, I'm super itching to get back into it, but I need to focus on cardio for another 30 lbs and don't want to start that program until I've hit the weight goal.

The problem with Body Beast is the DVD lengths. They're all over the place as far as time goes. All under an hour, but in the first block just barely. BUT, in the second block, the bulking block, which is actually the longest of the three blocks, all of the DVDs are around 30 minutes (the longest is Bulk Legs at 38 minutes).

My approach to 30 minutes

So, looking at all of that info, and a ton of info I haven't mentioned about many other home workout programs, I decided a while back that I just need to write my own programs using combinations of BB programs. Between the Insanity, P90X, P90X3, and Body Beast workout schedules, you can start to see a symmetry to them, and from there it's pretty easy to figure out how to write your own programs based on the outlines of these programs and your specific goals. Mainly I stick to P90X (M, W, F are lifting, one day of stretch in the middle, one of rest at the end, and the rest cardio) outline, but right now I'm doing a modification based on the Max:30 schedule.

I swear I'm getting to a point here

Anyways, after this long ass ramble, I wanted to let you know I wrote out a mass gaining program for myself that I'm planning to start in June. I'm basically using the Body Beast schedule, but I've swapped out the cardio workouts for Max:30 workouts, and for the lifting workouts that are excessively longer than 30 minutes I'm using P90X3 substitutes (ie. Body Beast Chest/Back is close to an hour, so I'm using P90X3 The Challenge on that day). If you have BB On Demand, or just happen to have a ton of BB DVDs lying around, you can easily put together a program like this on your own.

Bonus thought

Alright, one final thing because I love to preach about it. Kenpo X and MMX get a lot of flack because they may or may not be intense enough for people. I'll leave my comments as to why that is aside, but I like to share my only non-BeachBody program: The Bas Rutten CDs (Amazon Link for those interested). I found these on an MMA training forum many years ago when I was trying to spice up Kenpo X. Basically, this is Bas Rutten (old MMA fighter) calling out combos, and you deliver them. That's it. He does 10 2 minutes rounds or 7 3 minutes rounds, and the set includes CDs for Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA. Hands down, this is the single best marital arts cardio workout I've done. I come out soaked every single time, even when I shadow box it (it can be done on a bag or shadow boxed, your choice). Here's a video of a guy doing the MMA CD on a bag, to give you some idea of what I'm talking about. For those unsure, 1 = jab, 2 = jab/cross, 3 = jab/cross/hook, and 4 = jab/cross/hook/cross (or uppercut on the fourth). And Defense (only seen in the MMA one) is a sprawl or burpee.

I cannot express my love for these CDs enough. And especially, I love that the boxing one (though all of them, really) is a cardio workout that uses arms, not legs. This is an excellent way to get some extra shoulder work in while also getting cardio.

Anyways, that's my ridiculous ramble. Good luck out there fellow dad!

In general you don't want to use the same gloves for heavy bag work and for sparring because you will compress the material over time and risk injuring a partner. For heavy bag gloves I would go with 14-16oz for your size and as far as brand, a bit depends on your body type and preference.

Some people like harder gloves that have less give and others prefer ones that may be softer and less responsive but easier on your hands. Also, I would recommend that no matter which gloves you get, make sure they have adequate wrist support (thicker wrist straps made of leather instead of elastic and straps that double back will be the most secure). The brands you named all have quality gloves but there are two others I would recommend:

Title Gel Bag gloves $99:
These are fantastic gloves that will hold up and can take a beating. They have great wrist support and are really easy on your hands.

RDX Bag Gloves $69: These are a bit more dense and have a more snug fit but if you prefer harder gloves these are a good option. Wrist support is good and once you break them in they really form to your hands.

Favorite headgear- AIBA approved Sting or Adidas head gear (found here: https://www.stingsports.com/us/productdetail/?prodid=771&catid=37 and https://www.amazon.com/adidas-AIBA-approved-Boxing-Guard/dp/B009P8U2F6) , most international competitions use them and I feel like these two brands understand that headgear is mostly to reduce cuts, and designed their headgears as such. If you are looking for a budget the ringside competition ones are also nice and can be bought with cheek protectors if that your thing. (http://www.ringside.com/ringside-competition-boxing-headgear-no-cheeks-13.html)

For shoes the Adidas Box Hog 2s are really well liked by everyone I know and I plan on either those or the Nike KOs soon. (https://www.amazon.com/Adidas-Box-Hog-Boxing-Shoes/dp/B00EA18MWS and here's the Nike KOs if you really want to break the bank: https://www.athleteps.com/boxing-shoes/
and if you're looking for budget I recommend rival's boxing shoes. They are a fair price and come in many different styles (http://rivalboxing.us/collections/footwear/products/low-cut-boxing-boot-with-mesh) keep in mind a lot of sporting good stores will carry cheap wrestling shoes which will also suffice and you may prefer if you want to be able to try them on. If you do go that route the two best brands are Asics and Adidas.

Groin protectors are all personal preference depending on the shape of your body and how much you want to trade off comfort for protection. Title and Ringside should have anything you need on this front but it's very subjective so get what you like best. Some people like the full groin protectors (me) and some like just a basic jock strap.

You didn't mention it but for gloves I highly reccomend anything Rival. Have never had a problem with them and everyone I know who uses them (from their budget to their high end stuff) love them. for budget I recommend their new RB7 gloves (http://rivalboxing.us/collections/gloves-bag-gloves/products/bag-glove) and for high end I recommend their evolution series. (http://rivalboxing.us/collections/gloves-bag-gloves/products/rival-rb11-evolution-bag-gloves)

Hoped I helped!

Good cross training shoes (training for strength, speed, skill) need ankle support and good grip decent flexibility and sturdy and not be too spongy or too archy cause it makes weight lifting especially legs difficult and or less productive. Also, being lightweight and breathable.

Boxing cross trainers are really good all around shoe if you are going to be doing a lot of different types of workouts in them i.e. the following 3
They r in order of top rated and most to least expensive.

Adidas Pro Bout Boxing Boot, US6 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089B5RMI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_s2KxDbMRAYNFA

adidas Box Hog 2 Mens Boxing Trainer Shoe Boot Black/White - US 9.5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EA18MWS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sYKxDbAMSGPMX

adidas Men's Combat Speed.5, Silver Metallic/Black, 4 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XWN9T2Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QYKxDb2A164FE

If you are mostly going to stick to weightlifting and caliestenics work having a flat sole and lightweight shoe with moderate flexibility is a pretty mix to go for but i wouldnt recomend much in the way of cardio with the following, (probably not the best for long distance running for example) decent for jumprope or stair climbing though

Hightop Converse allstars or pf flyers
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Top Core Colors (6,0 D(M), Classic Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWTMEBY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_j5KxDbRMZ5J8S

Or even Vans and some Asics
Like the half cabs
Vans Men's SK8-Hi(tm) Core Classics, Black/White, US:9 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VSUC9A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_y6KxDbTH3JV4B

ASICS Men's Matflex 4-M, Granite/White/Black, 9.5 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GY6MHRI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_d7KxDbHZX5K80

If you are going to do mostly a lot of hard impact running you should maybe go for tennis, basket ball, and cross country shoes due to the shock absorbent soles and slightly wider base of the shoes to distribute the shock a bit more evenly. The higher arches generally found in these types of shoes make some weight lifting less than desireable i.e. the squats and deadlifts for example due to forcing you to be in an awkward center of gravity like putting more of ur balance and weight onto the balls of your feet versus the heels which is good for running and sprinting and cycling and jumping (jumprope, tennis, basketball) but not for squats and weight lifting because you are supposed to load your weight on your heels for compound movements to have the appropriate load bearing distribution on your body and fully engage your core to prevent injury.

It all really depends on what you are doing.
If you are going to be rock climbing a lot get good rock climbing shoes. If you are going to hike a lot get good hiking boots. Most timerland boots are reliable and comfortable and designed for that. If you are going to train on grass a lot i would reccomend soccer cleats or turf shoes. Like the adidas mundiales or the nike predators.

I myself own a decent mix

For most all around training i use the adidas box hog 2.

For pure weightlifting or calisthenics i wear my converse.

For soccer and grass and turf training i wear my adidas mundials.

For hiking and bouldering i wear my timberland hiking boots.

For casual going out i wear doc martens usually.

For hospital work i wear some really cheap but super comfy sneakers with thick gel inserts cause you are standing around a lot and walking a lot. For 12 hours at a time. Before i worked in the hospital i was an emt and wore steel toe workboots geared toward firefighters and paramedics with gel inserts.

For everything else there's mastercard. Jk.

> which is cool because we never get to use these strikes during kumite.

Unless you're a total dick. lol.

A heavy bag is probably a much more versatile tool for you given your living situation. You will definitely get feedback from hitting it that will help you improve your technique by testing the structure under force. Plus you can incorporate some lateral footwork as well. Although I definitely enjoy striking the makiwara, I think a heavy bag more closely resembles the physics involved when hitting an opponent. A makiwara increases in resistance the further you punch through it. A heavy bag has less resistance the further you punch through it.

For me, I went a slightly different route. I bought the Century Versys VS1 "Fight Simulator" (groan). It's basically a 100lbs sand base with a foam core tube zippered on top. It is very much like those inflatable punching bags you may have played with as a child. You hit it and it bounces back. It doesn't take much to knock it over, but when you prop it up against a wall, it works quite well as a makiwara albeit with a much softer striking surface. However more importantly, when propped up against a wall, it provides adequate resistance that increases the deeper you penetrate with your strike.

It's a good piece of kit. I use it to practice striking drills. Compared to a heavy bag, having the top move around better simulates how someone's body would respond to a strike to the head or neck. Unlike the wavemaster bags with the large plastic base, the soft sand base is quite short giving you full range to practise anything from low leg kicks to strikes to the head. I also pick it up and do sumo squats with it to work my legs. Aside from the noise it makes when you hit it, it's actually pretty quiet. And it's got a small footprint, so you can easily drag it out for training and then move it off into a corner when you're done with it.

Check out /r/amateur_boxing for lots of helpful tips. Not many of us trolls there, but I like to think I represent well.

Handwraps, specifically mexican style handwraps and gloves. I love Venum gear, but for a beginner, really anything will do. I used the $20 Everlast gloves from Dicks for the first two years. I'd recommend 14 oz or heavier.

Out of curiosity, are you a member at a boxing gym? Thinking of joining? I ask because seriously, good form above all else. I've been boxing on and off for 6 years and the only reason I've stuck with it so long (and gotten pretty good at it) is because of my coaches. I won't get way into it, since this isn't a boxing subreddit, but there is so much more to boxing than just punching things and it is a WHOLE NEW WORLD that awaits you out there.

u/Mekire · 2 pointsr/taekwondo

I quite like the BOB bags if I have to choose one and have limited space. They make really nice targets for round kicks and hook kicks. The wavemaster type standing bags are quite nice too but not particularly versatile. You can use them for assorted drills but best for round kicks in my opinion.

If you want something with more variety you could consider one of the multi station things like this too. In all honesty when I had one I usually preferred to use my other bags rather than it, but it might be to some people's taste if you have limited space.

Honestly I find sidekicks and back-kicks are often better trained with a partner holding a blocking shield (who knows how to move in order to absorb impact), but that might just be my personal taste.

I don't much care for hanging bags honestly.

I think if you have a partner available a set of slap paddles and a blocking shield will go really far.

u/D1screet · 2 pointsr/amateur_boxing

1.) For the most part, as long as you stay away from the cheap varieties from companies such as Everlast/Century, you should be alright. You could very well go with the Cleto Reyes Training Gloves (16oz.) and not regret it. A slightly cheaper recommendation would the Ringside IMF Tech Bag Gloves, although I must warn you that they are quite (notoriously) well-known for being very stiff when used brand new and will need to be broken in with use. A far more primo option that you could take would have to be Winning gloves. Not much else to say here except that most of the links I provided point towards Velcro (Hook and Loop closure) gloves, although if you did want gloves with laces, you could easily find lace variants of the same gloves on Amazon.

2.) Those 10oz. gloves are meant more for competition and actual fights, rather than mitt work; I would definitely recommend that you communicate with whomever you're planning on training with for what they would like for you to get, as they could just as well have you use your 16oz. gloves for mitt work as well.

3.) The Meister Focus Mitts have worked out pretty well for me, seems pretty sturdy and well built and has held up for me. There's a ton of different brands out there, as long as you pick one from a reputable producer, you should be alright.

4.) Ringside has some good heavy bags around; but I would probably be a bit more concerned about where/how you're going to hang it, first.

I'm currently en route to self-publish and the short answer is that it's not the "easy" route. It is the Oregon Trail of writing.

Everything that your publisher and agent would have done for you, you have to figure out yourself to stand out above the pile of crap.

Feedback? Figure it out.

Editing? Figure it out. It's anywhere from 200 - 1500 dollars.

Copy Editing? Figure it out. It's anywhere from 200 - 1500 dollars.

Advertising/Marketing? Figure it out. It's anywhere from 0 - your wildest imaginations.

Financial Support? Hopefully you have a decent bank account or have loved ones who can support you.

Emotional Support? Steak, diet coke, and cake with coffee helps me a lot. Also this

Guidance? Unless you have a mentor in the field, internet will be your best friend.

OH right and Cover Art? Books are judged by their cover-especially in the world of ebooks. This can be anywhere from 0 - 600 dollars.

Even after all that, your precious book will just be a glint in the pile of poop that you desperately hope people will notice (unless you had lot of marketing money/success).

And unless you sell enough copies to be noticed by a traditional publisher, you'll have to deal with the social stigma of being the lowly 'self-published' author.

If you end up becoming the 99% of the ebook authors (I should say 'non-erotica' authors), you'll be mostly doing it for self-gratification as your wallet wouldn't be able to justify you doing this as a career (unless you really don't mind living off of about 500 dollars per book).

My choice to self-publish was based on personal circumstances and because I liked the challenge of doing it all on my own. It was a hard choice to make and it's been very, very difficult choice to deliver. There are many times I wonder if I should just make traditional publishing work (though given the nature of my book, I've been told it might be too much of a gamble for traditional publishers).

And with increasing number of people self-publishing these days it's only going to get tougher.

So the point of my long reply to you is to not discourage you from self-publishing but to sort of give you the sense of reality behind the decision of self-publishing.

It's definitely not the easy route and most writers don't like the idea of self-publishing because you have to spend so much of your time and effort on things that has nothing to do with writing. You have to be a businessman and a writer at the same time and you have to be able to look at your book as a product and a novel.

If you're interested, I started a blog detailing the impact the choice of writing as a career had in my life and the things I've learned about the craft and business of writing: Aramiru.Wordpress.Com

It's working its way up to more of the "business" side of things that I've discovered behind wriitng and my choice to self-publish. In fact, that should be my next-next-next post.

Winning gloves are a huge investment for someone to make without knowing if boxing is truly for them.

I tried a lot of gloves and the two that I felt were the most supportive for padding were Ringside IMF Bag Gloves and Hyabusa Tokushu Regenesis Gloves. I went with the Hyabusa as they felt like they needed less breaking in and had excellent wrist support.

u/unnamedstripper45 · 1 pointr/amateur_boxing

Been adding Heavy Bag into HIIT workouts and after a couple weeks decided I'd like to break the bank for some proper wraps and bag gloves. Haven't been able to find a good store nearby, but online selection is pretty good: they have about 3-4 different sets each from TITLE, Ringside, Hayabusa, Venum and Cleto Reyes. Was wondering if I could get some recommendations for those brands.

-8.7'' wrist, looking for 16oz gloves

-Flexible for price, $150/1100rmb max

-6in1ft, weigh about 210 pounds (hence the workout!)

-Training/bag only going 2-3 times a week.

Based on some research/recommendations been looking at this set in particular:

Hayabusa Tokushu

Also choosing between these wraps, not really sure what to look for other than 180 inch.

Fairtex

Ringside

Everlast

Revgear

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest getting a hanging bag either 50 or 75 pounds. Everlast is a cheaper good quality brand and easy to find in most sporting stores. The most important thing is to get hand wraps and the heaviest gloves you can find, Everlast is also a good brand here. There are many youtube videos showing how to properly wrap your hands it is very important in preventing injuries.

If you have never hit a heavy bag it is easy to fuck up your hands and wrists especially if you have any strength. Any injury will kill your motivation to continue using the heavy bag. The last thing you want is a trip to a orthopedic physician because you broke your hand or wrist.

The standing heavy bags i don't have as much experience with, i would imagine they are more expensive and less useful. the ones i have trained on i had to actually hold back on because they usually have plastic behind the bag which hurts like hell if you ever feel contact with, also they rock around alot and make a bunch of noise.

Get a round timer as well for a few bucks. Altogether i dont think it would cost you more than 150-200 dollars for this setup.

These are the gloves i use http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11218525. Expensive but worth every dollar as i never get sore or have injuries to my hands in years.

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=24519766 is a good starter bag. I upgraded to 100 not long after using this as it swung around too much.

http://www.amazon.com/Everlast-Double-End-Heavy-Anchor/dp/B001XSN8M0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394591683&sr=8-1&keywords=heavy+bag+base These are also really nice to have but are not necessary.

UMMMMM kay.. ok so I'm an idiot.. so i dont get it.. went right over my head..it was early am and no coffee.
I guess you mean just teh name "chamber of secrets"
sorry if i thought it might had been something real.
and dint find the idea of an imaginary product called the "chamber of secrets" as funny as a very real vibrating broom stick.
at any rate it helps if your not a douchebag and just explain your joke.

ok for a real product.. if you want to make boys smile.
get them a sockem bopper.. the only difference between this an a blow up sheep.. is the shape.

sorry if i find this very real product funnier than some inside joke about how 'chamber of secrets" can be a double entendre for pussy.

one of the best investments was when i got my husband a punching bag. All in all it was about $175. its a regular punching bag and it comes with a stand like this. We got it with the stand because we rent and know we're going to be moving sooner rather than later. its substantially cheaper if you can just hang it and get one of these. I got a cheaper pair of gloves and googled "punching bag workout". I started doing a quick circuit that takes about 10 minutes but it works out every muscle in my body. I do that and do weights too. You dont have to start off buying something big. I got a kettle bell for $8 from marshalls, a jump rope for like $3, and hand weights for $5 at target. So you can start off with something inexpensive like that. Less than $20 and you already spent less than you wouldve for a month at the gym.

I've used one of these with MMX in P90X3 and it definitely helps change it up a bit. Just remember to wear some form of hand protection. I chewed up my hands pretty good before getting some light sparring gloves.

If you're interested in a fun, exhausting workout that can help you with punching a bit I'd suggest Bas Rutten's MMA Workout. He was the UFC heavyweight champ so he knows a thing or two about punching stuff.

http://www.amazon.com/BAS-RUTTEN-MMA-Workout-CD-DVD/dp/B00CXS6T02

I really enjoy it. You can probably find it...elsewhere if you look around but Bas is good people so I'd buy it if you like it.

u/sylkworm · 1 pointr/martialarts

Jump rope, run, do body weight exercises (push-ups, pull-up, air squats, crunches, burpees, etc), stretch out, buy a set of rings and do pull ups and ring exercises.

I have the Bas Rutten workout, and you can do them with air punches/kicks if you don't have a bag. The kickboxing CD has 10 2-minute rounds with 1 minute rest in between or 10 3-minute rounds with 1-minute rest in between. If you can do the 2-minute round set with good technique, you have pretty decent cardio. IF you can do the 3-minute round set, you're bangkok ready.

There's also the Precision Strike app that you can get for your phone, where it calls out combinations and does round timers. I used to use it more, but I find I like the pacing of Bas's workouts better.

Finally, you can always just pull up a workout video on youtube. Some might require you to work a heavy bag. Some won't.

Any thoughts on TITLE Leather Training Gloves as first gloves?

For bag work and some sparring. The reviews are great and they are recommended in some 'best budget gloves' lists, should I get them?

Also what weight should I go for? I am 80kg/180cm or 175lbs/5'11" is 16oz okay?

u/Anubis77 · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Everlast sells a pretty good heavy bag stand with speed bag attachment. I bought one from Sports Authority for a little under $300 for the stand and bag. It uses steel tubing and it holds up pretty well against punches and kicks -- Here you go

u/justDoItAlreadyyyy · 1 pointr/amateur_boxing

I don't know if they are the same, but I have a pair of these. They are OK starter gloves IMO. Upside: Cheap, and they work for bags and mitts if you are punching properly and not too hard. Downsides: They have little in the form of wrist support and are relatively compressed in the knuckle. I replaced them with these which have a double-wrap around the wrist for extra support.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I have the Regenesis in 14oz.

u/HedonisticFrog · 3 pointsr/amateur_boxing

These are what I use for bag and pad work. They absorb impacts very well and are holding up very well after three months and I hit hard at 230lb. The only sign of wear is the red rubbing off onto the white palm a little bit.

These are what I use for sparring. They were a little tight at first and hard to make a fist for the first couple of uses but they feel very comfortable now. They also show no signs of wear but they haven't been used as much. I also got them on sale for $50 so if you're patient you can wait until they go on sale again.

I'd recommend getting bag gloves and sparring gloves since the soft foam of sparring gloves will break down faster on a heavy bag and bag gloves are pretty hard for sparring.

u/kawifit · 2 pointsr/P90X

Kenpo with a heavy bag is one of my favorites. Nothing like letting out the weeks frustration on the bag. It will exhaust you and work your shoulders more.

Amazon has an 80lb everlast bag for 41 bucks. If you have prime it ships free. With gloves, hand wraps, and a ceiling mount I spent like 70 bucks and love it. After P90x I'm going to look in to more heavy bag workouts.

http://www.amazon.com/Everlast-4008-80-Pound-Traditional-Heavy/dp/B00076ZE76/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405605397&sr=8-1&keywords=everlast+heavy+bag

u/artfuldodger8 · 1 pointr/Boxing

I don't think those will have enough padding for use on a heavy bag. The gloves that marcosro posted are a very good pair for the price. (Way better than similarly priced Everlast gloves.) If you only want to get one pair of gloves, I'd recommend getting a 16oz pair of those as an "all-purpose" glove that you can use for mitwork, bagwork, and sparring. (16oz may seem big, but you won't want to use any less than 16oz for sparring.)

Alternatively, you could get "heavy bag gloves", which are lighter and have denser padding, but these would only be good for bag work. They also have less protection, so I do not recommend them over the Title training gloves that marcosro posted.

Edit: here's a link to a good pair: http://www.amazon.com/Boxing-Leather-Training-Gloves-12-Ounce/dp/B002XUJ9X4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421341164&sr=8-1&keywords=title+leather+training+gloves

i was super skeptical with this purchase, but decided for the price i bought my new gloves vs the price of this, it was worth a shot.

Totally worth the investment, I've been using this for the last 3-4 months and the freshness of both the gloves and the deodorizer is still there. I literally just leave the deodorizer in the glove after training and it absorbs the sweat / leaves a VERY nice smell in my gloves.

Actually local sports store usually carry the low-end style gloves. Everlast makes good gloves, but they're not the same ones you find in the store. If you want cheap and effective, I'd go with Title. I've got these and they've been good for me for the last half year.

  1. Cut two small holes opposite each other and insert a dowel rod with about a half inch on either side.

  2. Drill a small hole in the exposed ends of the dowels as close to the sides of the containers as possible and insert a large headed nut and bolt it to the dowel rod.

  3. Cut the screw top off the jug so you can fit your hands inside and grip the dowels.

  4. Wrap the entire outside of the jug with 10 to 15 layers of bubble wrap and tape into place. More is more, in this scenario.

  5. Congratulations. You have now made your own Soccer Boppers. Have fun with your friends.

Nice! I never taught the face bite in self-defense classes. Primarily because it's just hard to practice. You go through those BOB dummy bags pretty quickly.

I love Canadian Bacon. I think a lot of Michael Moore's political stuff gets preachy (and deceptive at times), but that movie is hilarious. Steven Wright as the Mountie is great, and Rip Torn saying "If this were a decent, God-fearing country, I'd be allowed to beat the two of you to death" is one of my all time favorite movie lines.

This is a must have. Bas breaks down the techniques really well. Also the CD workouts are intense and will definitely have you ready to start working out in a gym. We used to start our workouts with the all-around fighting track back when I was training seriously.

Edit: I'll add one thing that I think is important. Training too much on a heavy bag can lead to pushing your punches. It's good to alternate between shadow boxing and bag training.

First are the Hayabusa Tokushu Regenesis Boxing Gloves: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PFIOGHK/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I128KUG5BFJDKV&colid=2GCMKUBNUJTKZ

Second are the TITLE INFUSED FOAM IGNITE CEL-TECH BAG GLOVES: https://www.titleboxing.com/gloves/boxing-bag-gloves/title-infused-foam-ignite-cel-tech-bag-gloves

I save a few bucks on the title gloves. I mainly will need them for mits and the heavy bag. I don't want to buy 2 pair of gloves out the gate, so i was wondering if either of these will give me that 2 for 1. Thanks guys!!

u/cbrndn90 · 1 pointr/amateur_boxing

Hey everyone -- I picked up some sweet Hayabusa Tokushu Regeneses off Amazon (on sale from their usual $130) earlier this week. Pretty stoked. I did a lot of research beforehand and read a few reviews that stated cutting the thumb strap was preferable over leaving it in place. Wanted to test the waters and see if anyone else had these, and would recommend one way or the other?

The Bas Rutten Training CD will get your stamina built up quickly. As a bonus, you get even more practice in!

Throw a polar chest strap on, get that HR up to 160 or so, and go at it for half an hour. In a couple of month's you'll be a machine.

u/vicious_armbar · 2 pointsr/asktrp

If you want to learn how to properly strike so you can fight then your best bet is to find a boxing or Thai boxing coach at a boxing gym or mma school to teach you the basics.

Most MMA schools let people pay a "mat fee" [a cash payment at the door] instead of buying a membership. This is much cheaper if you just want to work on one aspect [striking for instance], or won't be able to come to the gym that often. Talk with the owners of local boxing/mma gyms around your area. In my experience they're always willing to work something out with you.

If you only want to hit the bag for fitness, and don't care as much about fighting or proper technique then you should download the Bas Rutten MMA Workout. Bas is a famous mma fighter, who crossed over from kickboxing to MMA. He goes over how to properly punch and kick; then he has 4 different workouts that you can use on the heavy bag [Boxing, Thai Boxing, All-Round Fighting, and the All-Round Workout].

Here's some reviews for it: http://www.amazon.com/BAS-RUTTEN-MMA-Workout-CD-DVD/dp/B00CXS6T02

Here's a torrent where he explains how to properly strike. If you're only interested in the striking part you can just download those video files and skip the others to make the download go faster: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/4087165/Bass_Rutten_Big_dvdA_s_of_Combat

Here's a torrent his workout routines: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/3438981/Bas_Rutten_MMA_Workout

Remember to seed the torrents!

As another poster said you're going to want to get some non-elastic hand wraps and some bag gloves. If you repeatedly hit the heavy bag with any kind of force without these items you're eventually going to injure your hands.

If you want to mix it up you can practice striking on the ground. I've been doing this drill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyLOxIJqi0o

After 4 rounds at 5 minutes each you'll be pretty tired.

I use Meister MMA Glove Deodorizers. I put them in my SPES heavies after every practice. It really helps to cut down on the build-up of smelly bacteria. I originally used them with my boxing gloves and they work great for that too. It's a scented desiccant that pulls moisture out of the glove when you aren't' using them. they also keep your gloves together in your bag.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I might give this a try with a spring and swivel.

Seems like a water-filled bag anchor would also help by reducing movement? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001XSN8M0/

Trying to decide between a lighter bag (60-70lbs) or heavier bag (90-100lbs). Thinking the heavier bag would move less and create less vibration. Or should I not think about bag weight in terms of noise/vibration, but only in terms of appropriate bag weight for my skill level and size (which would point toward a lighter bag)?

Okay, well first order of business is getting the bag up. Do that asap.

Gloves and wraps I would buy off amazon.

u/RSquared · 2 pointsr/martialarts

Might want to go with Thai-style pads rather than focus mitts. I've seen them as cheap as $30 on MMAHQ.com (a deal-a-day website like Woot but for gear).

Generally, they're easier to hold but not quite as satisfying to hit. They don't give as much "pop" as mitts and the holder can't shift them quite as quickly. Since you guys are just looking for the basics, I'd consider picking up Bas' workout - it's made for heavy bag but with a partner you'd quickly pick up where to hold for each other and when to switch the pads up (for knees and kicks), and the DVD would at least get you some help with the form of the strikes. Plus it's Bas, he's goddamn hilarious.

I have Everlast bag gloves, entry model, that I usually use for mitts and when traveling. You can orient the controllers however(ring up on thumb or down under pinky), I prefer this way for a realistic block and punch deflection. Just be sure to calibrate your gloves in game and you're good to go.

These are probably closest to my old school ones that Everlast makes now. www.amazon.com/dp/B000JF4HP0/ Title boxing still makes traditional leather ones if you're willing to pay a little more for the quality.

u/jezreeljay · 5 pointsr/Fitness

Going HAM on a heavy bag, especially for a beginner, is a very bad idea. YOU WILL FUCK UP YOUR SHOULDERS. With poor technique, you will also break your wrists / hands.

There's zero benefit, motivation or otherwise, to tracking punching force. If anything, it's a vanity stat.

But to try and be helpful, here are some really good boxing / martial arts resources for someone trying to do it solo:

Just a note, but my self defense instructor, as well as the cop who volunteered his time to assist with the class, was very adamant that you should NEVER take a weapon that you can't use/completely control into a fight. If you can't use it properly, it's better not to use it at all because an attacked can take it from you and use it against you.

My class was a national program that I HIGHLY recommend. It's called Rape Aggression Defense, and while it covers home invasion and safety tips, as well as basic self defense, it also teaches you how to get an attacker off of you if they're between your legs, trying to get on top of you, etc... It is women-only (my instructor specified that trans women and trans men were allowed), and there are other classes for men and for children.

I took the class with my best friend, who had only just realized that her then-fiancé had raped her a few months previously (she was sexually abused as a child and had an Ndad and a crack addict possibly-N mom. She had a shattered, possibly nonexistent normal meter before she met me), and going through that class at the time was one of the major reasons she decided to leave him, despite everyone in her "family" telling her that it wasn't reeeeeally rape since they were engaged. The class helped open her eyes to his abuse, and gave her the courage to get out. During one class, we learned how to kick hard enough to knock over a 200lb martial arts dummy. After she knocked it over, she ran up to me, a huge grin on her face and happy tears in her eyes, and told me, "I just imagined it was [Fiancé's] face!" That class let her stop feeling like a victim, and made her realize that she was in control of her life.

Most of the women in that class were survivors of sexual assault, and every one of them had a similar experience that she did. One woman just broke down sobbing during one class because she no longer felt helpless or damaged. The class had a full lesson on consent and how assault is never the fault of the victim.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that self defense classes, especially like RAD, give you more than just the physical tools and muscle memory to protect yourself; they teach you to use your voice (literally, in this case. The teacher told us to STOP letting society tell us to be meek and quiet while being abused, and to scream "NO!!" if we need to), and how to trust your instincts. They help to fix your broken normal meter.
