Nice! Since its in a cabinet, and its a single DIN, you should be able to find some great options for great prices. Probably so many options it will be hard to narrow them down! If you want built in Bluetooth, you will probably find lots of good options from good brand names for around $99. If you don't want built in Bluetooth, you can probably find nice options for more like $70.

I've had good luck with Sony stuff for the last few years, so I think you would probably be very happy with something like this. It comes with Bluetooth built in, and also with it's own remote for volume and basic functions. Of course there are tons of other great models and brands out there, so I don't mean to say this is the only way to go. If there is something else you find that you like more, feel free to post it here and I'll look it over for you.

Also just wanted to say you are a good wife! Buying a man a stereo for his boat ... that is just a WIN WIN. :)

Edit: If you think you might someday upgrade your stock speakers, and there is room in your budget, this high powered version might be worth the extra money. But if you were happy with the sound of the original stock radio, I would not bother.

u/iamnotcreativeDET · 2 pointsr/fordranger

if you don't care about power ratings and just want bluetooth/usb, Amazon has a Boss radio they sell for $22 with instant coupon Partner this with a $4 wiring kit and you have bluetooth/usb jams for under $30.

Im sure I will get some audio guys downvoting me for recommending an off brand radio, but after using some of Boss' stuff, I can say its hand on heart a decent alternative to the big guys, they sound pretty good and the cost is really low.

Boss even has a couple of decent double din touch screens for under $100, or if you want to go super cheap, Amazon Prime days has a few of the off brand Chinese double dins for under $50 that get extremely good reviews, and typically have the benefit of being able to mirror your smart phone screen and/or play movies. I currently have this guy in my Honda Civic, and it powers the factory speakers better than the original radio, plus it supports Apple Car play, which $160 is a killer deal to be able to modernize any older car with this feature.

Thanks for the reply. that sucks about the budget, a lot of others found setups that were well within my constraints.

> First, make sure to check all your resources before popping over to your local sound shop and letting them convince you to buy some overpriced shit.

>Amazon and Ebay are your friends! Use crutchfield and sonicelectronix for info and standard >pricing, then check Amazon/Ebay for the BIG discounts. Tell crutchfield or Amazon what you're driving and they'll give you a list of parts that fit.

>Second, even with only listening to rock music, trust me you will want a small subwoofer to fill out your system. Nothing major, it doesn't have to blow your head >off or anything. Just adds a little low end to balance out your sound.

>So, if I were to build a decent budget system for your Ranger, this is what I'd do:

> Head unit (radio). Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, JVC are really the only brands I would consider. Here's a decent Pioneer for the money. ~ $68

>
You'll also need a wiring harness for your aftermarket radio to work in your truck. Not a big deal. ~ $4

> Okay, speaker time. Crutchfield says your truck has 5 1/4" in the doors, 6 1/2" in the kick panels and some random speaker behind the seat. For our purposes, let's say you just disconnect the rear speaker as it will be completely unnecessary. Here are some Rockfords for the doors that won't break the bank. ~ $62 / And here's some 6 1/2" Alpines for the kick panels ~ $62

>
Subwoofer. Okay, now you may reach this point and say, "You know, I'll be fine with just this! Listen to how much better it sounds!" Trust all of us, a woofer is a good investment. For your purposes, I've tried to leave some wiggle room as far as budget goes to allow for a decent sub, box, amp and amp kit. A lot of these people will say build your own box, and if you're handy and would like to try, then go for it! I'm just not as averse to prefab as most people around here, so I say just find a decent prefab wedge box that will fit behind your seat. A little browsing and Bam! box and woofer. That's perfect for you. ~ $109

> Amplifier. You don't need anything crazy. Keeping with the Rockford theme, here's a decent 250w amp for that sub. ~ $103

>
Amp kit. ~ $33

>And the grand total is: ~ $441 ($196 without the stuff for the subwoofer)

>Now, obviously you can play around with the pieces of this system for preference and price, but this was just what I could throw together in 20 minutes or so. Research, research, research. Half of this game is finding parts you like and reading/forming opinions about brands, etc. Hope I helped.

and

>Oh I can answer this one easy. My first truck was Ranger.
>You can easily get a nice sound system going for cheap. Check out Crutchfield for getting equipment. They make >it dead simple to install most components.
>I recommend getting a CD player.head unit that has bluetooth and usb inputs. You can get a pioneer or kenwood for cheap. Or spend a little more for an Alpine.
>Replace the stock speakers with stock sized aftermarket ones. You don't even have to spend a lot of money. Honestly, you could get away with spending less than >$250 on the whole set up.
>You will have a solid system at this point. You can then research adding a sub for the bass.

>Here is some that fit your truck;

>Total of about $220.

I'm sure there can be good setups found for my budget?

u/Adame409 · 1 pointr/Mustang

For the head unit I used a Pioneer 4200nex (this head unit is pretty much the same as the 8200nex(which is the top of the line head unit) but without the navigation. There really isn't a need for that feature since this head unit supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play, they both use their own maps)

For the dash kit I used the ADS MUS1 Radio Installation Kit (if you decide to go with this kit, the wire harness is already included inside the box)

Then I used the iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR module so they would all communicate with each other, that also took care of the A/C, steering wheel controls and will also connect to the ODB2.

I did not install this myself, but the installer told me that it wasn't too difficult, and it was his first time installing this kit/radio into a mustang.

I love it!!! It was worth the all the money I spent!

edit: if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask :)

I had about that budget to build the system in my 75 Lincoln. Here’s links to what I went with other than the sub which is an older Sony 10” in a box I bought used. I run the 4s and 6x9s off deck power and use a cheap amp for the sub. A better amp would be better of course but for my budget I like how this sounds. The kicker speakers have been great for the $$$ although the 4”/6x9 combo is a little high sounding because my car is so long. Your tracker shouldn’t be as bad given it’s not 19.6 feel long like my Lincoln. Haha. If you can fit bigger speakers up front I’d suggest doing so to pull some more mids out. This setup was around $400 and sounds pretty decent considering the price. The speakers aren’t on prime for they price so a little more $ would get them faster. Also don’t forget to budget in wiring as a kit and decent RCAs will raise the cost. Also, check local garage sale sites like on Facebook. People are often offloading stereo stuff when they need money. Just beware of stolen items :(
Best of luck! Hope it all works out!

I bought a cheap DUAL Headunit from Walmart and it was absolute shit. It was way too bright, no way to adjust brightness or color. The bluetooth wouldn't pick up a signal half the time. It felt cheap. And there was no way to display the time while listening to music. I actually uninstalled it and returned it back to Walmart. Went to Best Buy to look at what they had since I could actually play around with those before buying and installing. Found this guy: https://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KMMBT315U-Digital-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B0186TTQUG (I bought it on Amazon because Best Buy wouldn't price match and it was cheaper). I love it! I can color match to my Jeep's dashboard lights to make it look almost stock. I can adjust brightness and dim it at night so it's not distracting. It has great bluetooth and the display screens are clear and make sense while providing all the info I need. I am extremely happy with this unit! I like my cars looking as close to stock as possible so this headunit did the job very well

Don't wait! Get a cheap used Android phone and a phone holder and make sure you get this gadget:

Wireless Bluetooth Audio Receiver for Car Audio with Bluetooth Auto-Reconnect

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G57CWZ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is the only one that reconnects automatically to your phone without the need to turn on manually; it requires a USB port and aux jack.

I was planning to sell my 2013 Fiat 500, but this gadget convinced me not to. Thousands of dollars saved.

Caveat - I do have a pay as you go chip on this android phone so that it refreshes traffic and selects the best route, but will work as a great Spotify deck if you park garage has a good wifi signal that allows the phone to download music.

BTW the receiver also works with my iPhone, so you can stream music from it.

Ok, I'll help with this one. Things you will need: dash install kit, wiring harness, head unit, sub wiring kit, subwoofer, sub box, speakers (optional), subwoofer amplifier, and an afternoon. For the dash kit, start here: http://www.carid.com/2008-pontiac-g5-stereo-installation-dash-kits/ the kit let's you fit an aftermarket radio into the dash. Then the wiring harness, http://www.carid.com/american-international/wiring-harness-plugs-into-factory-harness-mpn-gwh406.html connects the new radio to the car speakers. Then the head unit, i really recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01463W1IU/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?qid=1464928970&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=Head+unit&dpPl=1&dpID=41AY36GKw9L&ref=plSrch it's simple, but has everything you need with Bluetooth and excellent control over your sound profile. Front speakers in my experience are not the most important part of the build, usually for later model cars, the stock speakers are already decent, and just adding a new head unit will seriously upgrade the sound quality. If you really want to replace them, just look up your speaker size for your car and google some good speakers in that size. The subwoofer is going to make the biggest difference in your sound, but i really have to know what you want. Do you want an earthquake in your car, or good balance for sound quality? I can make some recommendations for a sub or amp based on what you want.

u/andy2na · 2 pointsr/AndroidAuto

it definitely behaves like its capacitive.

I don't know of any specific places for 4100 screen experience. I suggest you search Amazon's reviews (4.3/5 stars) on resistive:

http://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B00SKJPKGW/ref=cm_cr_dp_srch?filterByKeyword=resistive&search-alias=community-reviews

  • Don't let the resistive touch screen fool you. It's very responsive considering it's not capacitive. Sure, you can tell a difference but it's not so bad that you'll want to shoot yourself. For instance, scrolling requires a minimal amount of pressure. And on the plus side, you can wear gloves and still operate this unit if you're in cold climate.
  • Screen is very responsive for a resistive unit.
  • The resistive touch-screen works great. I like the pinch-n-zoom functionality in the Maps screen of Android Auto.

    Also this reddit review:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/320o9x/my_not_so_short_review_of_android_auto_in_the/

The removable screen is awesome, worth getting the cheaper 4100 for it instead of the capacitive non-removable screen on the 8100.
u/logoster · 2 pointsr/Android

ok, so looking into it they aren't necessarily audiophile features, but they are still completley unnecessary for someone who just wants something to give them a few modern conveniences (like an AUX jack and bluetooth for example) and not much else (for example, GPS navigation, or a touch screen, both not necessary whatsoever for a good quality head unit)

in fact, looking at amazon now, even around $80 seems to be a bit on the high side for a decent head unit, as i'm seeing pretty good quality ones for around $50-$60 on amazon

like this pioneer for example: https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DEH-150MP-Single-Stereo-Playback/dp/B0091V0A9U/ref=sr_1_4?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1518202740&sr=8-4&keywords=head+unit&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011

or if you don't care about CD playback, this boss unit is on sale from it's usual price of $66 to now about $30

https://www.amazon.com/BOSS-Audio-616UAB-Bluetooth-Wireless/dp/B01CG8N0H8/ref=sr_1_3?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1518202740&sr=8-3&keywords=head+unit&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011

and it has a few more options (not including CD) over the pioneer, as not only does it have aux, but it also has USB, SD Card, and bluetooth if you happen to have a phone without a headphone jack

u/Nuclear-Cheese · 6 pointsr/ft86

Pioneer AVH-4200NEX Does both Android Auto and AppleCarplay. Has native OBDII integration + other native apps. It's the bees knees. I'm getting it very soon. It's expensive, but god damn, it's the best thing out there right now for head units. Also it's has super easy pop-out ant-theft screen, for easily removing it for when you park. (Parts of downtown St. Louis are really ghetto/risky to park)

u/jeffe333 · 1 pointr/CarAV

So, the install parts you listed in your initial response are standard for any vehicle and any stereo? I looked at Crutchfield, but their stereos seemed to be much more than Amazon's, although they may have included the install components. I'll have to look into that. Thank you for that very important heads up!

I found the perfect stereo, although it's quite a bit more than I'd prefer to spend: https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-4200NEX-Multimedia-Receiver-Touchscreen/dp/B01D6HPMZQ

So, I went to Crutchfield and utilized their tool to input the things most important to me, and this is what I came up w/:

  1. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_070AV7225B/Axxera-AV7225BH.html?tp=5684

  2. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_070AV7336B/Axxera-AV7336MB.html?tp=5684

  3. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_070AV7116B/Axxera-AV7116Bi.html?tp=5684

I've never heard of Axxera before. Frankly, just looking at these units, I'm more likely to go w/ the Kenwood or the Pioneer that we were talking about earlier, although I do like the idea that the Axxera's have detachable face-plates.

If you have experience installing speakers in your car you could save some dough by doing them yourself but they’re not the easiest to install in the rear deck. You gotta remove a good amount of plastic to get to the two 6x9s and then there are two speakers in the rear seats as well that you need to remove the rear plastic. The front door speakers are easy but you gotta buy spacers for them. As far as brands go, for the head unit this Sony unit is awesome Sony XAVAX1000 6.2" (15.7 cm) Apple CarPlay Media Receiver with Bluetooth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JDFKQJ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZH9NDbN89V8BH and speakers Pioneer TS-G1620F 600 Watts Max Power 6-1/2" 2-Way G-Series Coaxial Full Range Car Audio Stereo Speakers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A0LZHYS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fY9NDbGY26QS0 and rear speakers Pioneer TS-A6965R 6" x 9" 3-Way... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A0LXRL8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I didn’t look at a ton of models, but most of the aftermarket infotainment centers I did see had CarPlay.

Sonicelectronix.com is the site my coworker recommended and you can filter the results to only show what will work in a RAV4. The one I liked ended up being cheaper on Amazon though.

This is the one I ended up getting. It’s been great so far.

Edit: It also connects to the backup camera and most of the steering wheel controls, if you care about those.

u/jumpiz · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

I have a BlackVue DR550GW-2CH as a dashcam (I have it for around 4 years, installed originally in another 2 cars).

Intsun Vehicle Rear View Monitor (you clip it to your rear view mirror) cost me $20-25 in Amazon (it has 2 video inputs but I am using one). This works by detecting video signal on the channel and turning it on. You hook the backup camera to the reverse lights in order to show up every time you go in reverse.

And a License Frame with a Rear View Camera eSky Viewing Universal License Camera $40.

Installed on a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic. Works wonders and you can't even tell it's an addon. Looks OEM.

My GF's 2013 Scion FR-S got a DR650GW-2CH as a dashcam and a Pioneer AVH-280BT ($180) and a $15 backup camera that looks like the OEM for the car.

Works great too but the wiring on that is a little difficult. It needs to be wire to the fuse box.

Pretty happy with the result.

From Amazon:
April 1, 2019

I was extremely impressed by this inexpensive head unit. It was so cheap, my expectations were very low. Once I hooked it up, I was shocked at the sound and ease of use. Bluetooth connected almost instantly and USB operation was flawless as well. I did some extended tests like testing power output of the amplifier and got 10 watts x 4 channels at 12 volts at 1% THD (using SMD Amp Dyno). I also tested the RCA outputs and got 2V of output at 0.25% THD (clean!). Overall I could not fault this unit for the price. I liked it so much, I came back and bought 6 more! This one is Williston Audio Labs approved!

u/Bovaloe · 1 pointr/Miata

I have a Kenwood KMMBT315U I got off Amazon. Everything is good except the direct sunlight point, which sucks, but for $80 I'm pretty happy with it. It doesn't have a crazy light show display but you can change the backlight colors, which I really like.

Edit: Another nice thing is it should plug right into the existing Kenwood plug you have in there, no rewiring. While not a huge deal, it makes it into a 5 minute job to swap over

u/AtillaTheHungg · 2 pointsr/CarAV

For a beginner setup, not bad. I started with nearly the same quality, as for the deck. I wish you would stay away.

u/elitemouse · 1 pointr/Honda

You might want to look at this guy as well, as he has backup / aux / usb inputs but also bluetooth which I have found to be immensely useful for the car. No fucking around with wires I just switch to BT and have my whole spotify library ready to go, and then I have a thumbstick with 15gb of music on the usb that just stays in the car all the time for roadtrips.

That kit would definitely work for your wiring though, although you can easily route a cable up into the glovebox and just leave a usb in there if you decided to go the bluetooth route.

Keep in mind you'll need a wiring kit for the rsx and a dash kit to get the double din to fit with different trim.

I can not recommend this unit enough:

It has Apple CarPlay as well as android auto depending on your phone. Great sound, customizable lights on the front to match your interior, even HDMI in the back (look up adding a raspberry pi car computer).

I’ve bought two for my wife and I and would buy a third if I had a car to put it in.

Also congratulations on your car! Enjoy it and don’t forget to 👋

FM modulator will let them use the stock radio and get an aux in. They'll use it the same as a transmitter (turn to the station it's set to, flip a switch if it's needed, play away).
Generally gonna run around $100-160 (depending on brand), with installation included, at best buy.

I'd say a simple radio would be something like the Pioneer DEH-150MP or Kenwood KDC-155. Those'll give them an aux in and CD player while keeping it pretty simple since there's no bells and whistles. The pioneer is $60, at best buy, not including parts and labor.

I also installed 5.25's in front and 6.5's in the rear like u/Bageeka did, and can vouch that the sound difference is huge. Oddly enough i also used kickers, since they were like $34 at bestbuy. This isn’t a solution necessarily, but it may fix your speakerphone problem. I used to use AUX in my car before I found this little Bluetooth-AUX receiver. Plugs into both a cig lighter and your AUX, then every time you turn your car on your phone automatically connects to Bluetooth. Pretty handy, and works like a charm.

I’d recommend also picking this up if you’re interested - it silences the weird static noise the BT receiver produces through the car speakers.

If you want to actually mirror your screen, you need this with a radio that accepts HDMI. Carplay is similar to mirroring, there's plenty of youtube videos that demonstrates what it's about, a lot more limited than mirroring though. I don't personally use it but the Kenwood DDX9703S is a beautiful radio, if you want a cheaper radio though this Pioneer is neat as well.

/u/pixelkarma If you're keen on the JBL CP100 I would highly recommend the Sony XAV-AX100. The only issue is it doesn't have Aux in. I love my one, it works/sounds great.

u/Throwaway_Consoles · 2 pointsr/funny

Are you purposefully picking the shitiest stuff you can find? EVERYONE knows that BOSS is the absolute shittiest piece of junk to vomit in car audio. I genuinely wouldn't wipe my ass with BOSS audio.

Or! If you want to spend more than $80 but less than a new cell phone you can get something like:

And if your factory head unit was nicer than the last one I posted, please tell me what car because if it's nicer than that but doesn't have Bluetooth or USB, I need to know.

I had the Sony XAV-AX100, and much like you, I wanted that volume knob. And much like you, I was disappointed when I actually had it. Other than that, the head unit itself was pretty great, sounded fantastic. I ultimately went back to Android head units, but I liked the Sony.

If you can wait a month or so, the Sony XAV-AX5000 just came out:
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-XAV-AX500-CarPlay-Receiver-BLUETOOTH/dp/B07CB3CB1V

currently out of stock, but it is an updated version of the 100, and does not have a volume knob, but easily accessible volume buttons.

Zero reviews. Off-brand. Try to find something that inspires more confidence. Two minutes of research led me to this one that is better from a trusted name with good reviews for a lower price:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01463W1IU/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile

u/verbthatnoun · 10 pointsr/cars

Yes.

Don't buy it.

You will be sorely disappointed with the audio quality and overall build quality of it, good radios start at about $80, and you want reliable bluetooth.

I spent $100 on a Kenwood for my Honda and the bluetooth is fucking terrible, it takes ages to connect. I can safely say I have wasted multiple days of my life getting the god damned bluetooth to work. Otherwise, it sounds fantastic.

Best inexpensive radio brand? Pioneer. this guy is a fucking deal.

For a 99 Mustang, you also will need a handful of accessories to install it, including:

Ford radio removal tools

a Dash adapter kit (because the radio is a different size than stock)

and a wiring harness kit (This only works if you don't have premium or Mach audio)

The harness kit will make it easy to wire it up on your kitchen table, all of the wires are color coded to match the wiring harness the Pioneer radio will come with, once you crimp or solder your connections and heat string or electrical tape them, install will be as simple as "plug and play"

The issue you run into with cheap radios is poor advertising of wattage or power output. I promise that $30 radio doesn't put out 50w x 4. Probably more like 1/4 of that, this will make your music sound like total utter shit.

48v 2 channel amp

Subwoofer amp

8" weatherproof coaxials

Subwoofer

Head Unit

line out converter

Head unit shield

Need to be pretty handy for this setup, but it isn't anything crazy. The amplifiers will power on when you put juice to them so you'll need a switch. You can run off of the main batteries with these amps, and the head unit off of the 12v supply. Those coaxials are meant for wakeboard speakers... I would do 4 per side, depending on how loud you really want to be and how much space you have available. Having a real head unit will make sure the signal has enough signal strength to run the 2 channel, and the sub amp will be fed by rca right from the head unit.

Sub will need a box, might look for one that is sprayed with bed liner for weather resistance.

u/adam4826 · 3 pointsr/CarAV

It would be difficult to find a proper headunit with a cassette, but i can give you a few items to go by.

Headunit - DEH-150mp

(dash kit, wiring harness and antenna adapter of course)

keeping budget in mind, and that that car has 4 4x8 sized speakers, i would get two sets of these adaptors to allow for 5.25 speakers.
I personally use 2 sets of Polk db522
and for the money they sound decent.

You could leave it like that and it would be enjoyable or you can go the extra step and get something like a RF4 channel amp, with amp install kit and be right around your 500 mark.

Keep in mind that i am far from an expert. Just wanted to give you a direction.

I just fit a Pioneer FH-X 700 BT installed. No regrets. Granted, I've only had it for a few months, but I have nothing to complain about. I have bluetooth, USB, AUX, and the usual rest of stuff. I got mine price matched at Best Buy for $130. They have a singe din version similar to this in features, but I took the Double Din just because it's easier to use.

>Some people can't buy a brand new car just to have the newest technology

You don't have to buy a new car. You can buy a new receiver unit for cheap... cheap as in $36: http://www.amazon.com/612UA-MP3-Compatible-Digital-Media-Receiver/dp/B004S50WPG/ref=sr_1_1?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1394303431&sr=1-1

That's probably what this tape converter would cost, but a new receiver will sound 100 times better. Converting from digital to analog in that little tape unit and then sending that analog through the tape deck's read head is going to produce a lot of noise and a lack of clarity - fantastic if you're a hipster, but awful if you care about form or function.

u/shipwreck-ID · 1 pointr/Miata

I bought a decent JVC one from crutchfield because it was a decent deal with speakers bundled. I think speakers plus head unit ran me just over $100. However, I then noticed the Blaupunkt Toronto on amazon for $12 and thought “why the hell not?” and ordered it too.

Installed the JVC speakers and the cheap head unit and I’m pretty satisfied. The screen on the head unit stopped working pretty much the same day I installed it, but I just wanted Bluetooth and a volume knob so it doesn’t bother me and I never bothered to get amazon to send me a replacement. Otherwise works great, connects to my phone quickly, etc.

Main reason I went this route is I don’t have to give a shit about it getting stolen, both because of the cost as well as I think it looks very much like a stock unit. I actually love how it looks compared to most aftermarket head units.

You can get a decent bluetooth/USB capable head unit for about $30. That's what you'd spend on a FM transmitter at Best Buy. Installation is not difficult and any reasonably popular car will have a walk-through on YouTube.

u/Some_Lurker_Guy · 1 pointr/Honda

I put this head unit in my accord recently and it's worked excellently. You can also get an antenna intercept like this and route it out the bottom of your dash and save some money. But I'd recommend getting another head unit if you're pulling the dash apart anyway.

This is what it looks like. There is a gap, but it's not too bad honestly. It's almost impossible to find one that fits fully. I don't think any reputable brands make it in the size we need in the USA. Anything is better than the shit stock one. I hated that fucking thing lol.

I'll throw in that I've had an 09 Corolla S with 5 speed stick and it has never had a single failure of any sort other than the manual transmission having a second to third synchro issue that I've learned to work around. But as most are automatics, even that wouldn't be a problem. I highly recommend the cars for reliability as long as they're properly maintained.

It's the nicest head unit I've owned, but it still feels slightly dated. Weird shit, like there are two USB ports on the back and one is for iOS devices, and one is for Android, so if you want both you need to run two cables out from behind the dash. Even stock Chevrolet radios these days seem to support both out of a single USB. The interface is "meh", I don't love it but I don't hate it. The biggest thing I miss is a physical volume knob, but I would have had to get a smaller screen and I didn't want that.

Honestly the reason I got it is because of The Wirecutter's Review. If I weren't looking for CarPlay/Android Auto, I probably would have gotten a different one, but I love having Spotify & Google Maps in my car.

u/MyNameIsRay · 3 pointsr/CarAV

Dash kit is there, doesn't look too damaged, you should be able to cage mount a new radio.

No antenna adapter required (thanks Honda!) For reference, antenna is the silver end with foam wrapped around the wire shown in pic 2. It will just plug into any new radio.

The red RCA you show in picture 2 should have a white or black one attached too (they come in pairs) I can see the same cable tucked behind the support in picture 3, so I'm guessing it's just jammed away in there somewhere. That would be the subwoofer signal line (or go to an EQ, not sure what you had in addition to the radio/speakers).

The most important part, the harness to the car, isn't shown in any of these pictures. Picture 3 shows the wires in a bundle on the right side (under the yellow plug), but I don't see the end. It looks like this. If you have that, all you need is Metra part no. 70-1721 to plug in and give you all the wires for a new radio. If it's cut off (just bare wires) you'll have to hardwire (but won't need any extra parts). Take a picture and reply with it and I can confirm what you need.

As for radios, you won't have a hard time finding a good quality $100 radio with aux and BT. I'm a pioneer fan, the deh-x6800bt is right in that budget.

Are you going to feed the sound from the phone to the car speakers?

If yes, then you need a car stereo with a 3.5mm jack. Then just buy a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord and then a phone car charger.

If you just want to play over your phone speakers then just get a car charger.

They're great for how I use them. They are shorter in length so there is a little loss in range. They aren't bass heavy, mostly mid and upper. That's perfect for me since I have a sub to do the heavy lifting.

I'm rolling on a 2017 STI base and from all the research I did when I was looking into making my sound system not sound like garbage in my car, seems the general consensus has been that these cars all have terrible head units, the stock speakers actually aren't bad (the head unit is just that bad that it makes them sound bad), and that the subaru kicker speakers are far too much money for what they deliver.

Oem audio plus even keeps the stock speakers in their solution. They do replace the tweeters though and obviously add a sub.

A simple under seat subwoofer seems a far better value to get bass into the system. You can even get a kicker for $200.

I'd ultimately suggest replacing the head unit along with getting a simple under seat subwoofer for an more even and overall solution.

I went with the Pioneer 4200NEX and a Cerwin-Vega under seat subwoofer.

Sounds pretty damn good and I now have android auto (and apple carplay if you're into that).

Basically, fuck the cassette adapter. This is cheaper, as permanent as you want it, and better. No scratchy feedback.

Install an aux port in your car.

Hey, my wife has this exact car, with that exact mileage! Congrats! Did you buy it from a private party or a dealer? What did you pay for it?

  • First things first, learn about your car.
  • Next, take it to a mechanic and make sure everything is okay. At 60K miles, that car needs a major service. It's not very expensive if you don't end up needing new tires. Dealer quoted us $880. I took ours to a local mechanic and it cost ~$500. Got the tires rotated for free at Costco.
  • Check if you have any open recalls: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls
  • Get a car wash and wax to protect the paint from the elements.

    Mods:

  • We got a class III 2" towing hitch put on the car. That gets used all the time. Got it done at U-haul I think. It's been forever.
  • We've tried many different bluetooth options for phone connectivity but they've all been shit. Thinking of switching out the media player for something like this Pioneer system.
  • I haven't done this yet, but I'm looking into replacing the lights with LEDs all over the place in both cars. Looking at Diode Dynamics for this.
  • Got a roof basket.

I would say the installation will probably be around $100-$150

Here’s a link to Geek Squad. Their installation is about $65 plus parts. I would think with a mount kit and the steering wheel control integration you would probably be at around $100-$120

I bought my Pioneer AppRadio 4 off Amazon. (SPH-DA120) it is CarPlay enabled. I really like it but would recommend you also get a matte screen protector for it as well or else the fingerprints get pretty bad. (I had to wipe mine off daily with my OCD)

So I’m guessing stereo + parts + install would be around $450 roughly.

Most mid-upper level head units have the ability to plug in a backup camera. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a unit with Android Auto without a backup camera plug. Also, if it has Android Auto, you're guaranteed to have a USB port, as it's required, and all head units with the above mentioned features will most certainly have an aux input as well.

Also, I hear Crutchfield's customer service is top-notch. You should be able to give them a call with more specific questions.

Here are a few well-reviewed units I'm considering for my WRX with all of the features you listed:

Mine came with a PAC interface module that controls the JBL amp and lets you use the steering wheel controls, also retains the voice navigation. I can't seem to find the exact model that's in my car, but pac-audio.com has the different interfaces. If yours doesn't have the JBL sound system or navigation, there are cheaper simpler interfaces that will still retain the steering wheel controls. (This one is like $129.95 or something), for the radio I used a Pioneer DEH-X6900BT, $99.95 on Amazon, and the install kit and wiring harness is usually about another $25 or so https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KKHSYGE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the thing says about 47 rms, its a built-in class d amp.

also those polk are like 120 rms for the pair. (60 apeice)

if i could tip you in a bit, before i even noticed that only one channel was working, i was usually doing highway driving, going over 60, and with a softtop, it was always alot of road noise. with that being said, i was usually always using my headunit at 44- 48 out of 50 on the volume. you think the crap was clipping and i burned out all 4 of the speakers.

thanks for the help again homie.

I just upgraded my 15 STi (w/ Harmon speakers) with the Pioneer 4200NEX. Its on sale for $200 off. I was able to retain my steering wheel controls with another component. Probably your best bet for seeing Android Auto in a WRX until 2020. I've not aware of any OEM updating existing systems to add Android Auto / Apply Carplay after release.

Order this. Less than $5 and it will give your car bluetooth. It turns on and off with the car, super slick.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/CarAV

Install it yourself, it's not difficult if you can use a screwdriver and wrench.

I'm sure you can get something cheap off of eBay or Craigslist. If you buy new, stick with major brands at least like Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, JVC, etc. Do not buy little off brands, they're not worth the savings as they tend to fail more often and/or sound like ass.

This Pioneer would probably serve you well.

Edit: Stay away from Best Buy and big box chains. They are known to mess up good equipment :( If you want to have it installed, find a local car audio shop that is reputable

u/williamshowalter · 1 pointr/subaru

I use this in my 2011 Outback. Works great. Unlike most the ones on Amazon it powers off with the car and doesn't have an internal battery, so it always connects back up automatically without fail. Only time I've had problems is if I toggle airplane mode on my phone, then I have to unplug it and plug it back in.
Edit: and the 2011 Outback has the same center console layout, so I just leave it plugged into DC and aux in the center and don't think about it.

This hu features everything you want except nav will be handled by your phone through android auto (better nav anyway). You'll also get a lot better sound out of a quality hu. It's $450 currently but I'm sure sure can find one for like $350 on ebay (probably no warranty on ebay). Hu are one of those things that you keep for years, you may be saving a couple bucks now but you're gonna regret it when it breaks eventually.

So I found out that Amazon allows sorting their car electronics by input options and features, so that might be a good place to start. I doubt I'll find something with AM/FM and CB, though, as they require such different hardware antennas (...is that right?) Also doubt I'll find a police scanner, ha...

I'm wondering how important/nice bluetooth would be. Anybody have comments in that regard?

EDIT: the Pioneer FH-X700BT seems like a good place to start.

Also found the Uniden BearTracker, which appears to fit in a standard car stereo slot (1 DIN?)

I may end up going for a simple AM/FM/CD/USB/AUX 1DIN stereo, with a Uniden police scanner or a CB radio in the other slot. Uniden's Bearcat seems cool, but it's expensive... And I'm also reconsidering why the fuck I need a police scanner... Especially at these prices. It was a cool idea, but I don't think I exactly need it right now, so...

u/NickyNice · 1 pointr/CarAV

I don’t suggest an FM transmitter. I used one for the past 2 years and you lose a lot of quality and sometimes they cut in/out, get static, etc.

Just get a new stereo. Here is an example of a unit under $50. Go through crutchfield.com and get the wiring harness and dash kit for free or discounted (it was free for my car)

If you can follow simple instructions (sent from crutchfield for your exact car) and you know how to match colors together you can install it yourself.

u/avamore · 3 pointsr/boston

Here is the Best Buy model

Here is the Amazon model

Both, from what I can tell are the same thing. Best Buy price matches Amazon under the conditions that they are "Fulfilled by Amazon, and are the same exact model"

The new practice for most B&M stores is to get the manufacturer to give them a "custom model" so they can get around the price match against Amazon. (Hence the 4200 vs 4201).

I'm technical, but have no experience taking apart my dashboard to get to the radio. I'm under the gun now, my girlfriends lease is up this month, and my car is never used, but she wants a backup camera, and for 700 bucks, it saves us 300 bucks a month.

u/xPalito · 2 pointsr/350z

Usually just changing the unit doesn't do much difference. I replaced my bose headunit with a pioneer sph da120 but kept the original bose speakers. I didn't notice any difference. I just replaced it because i wanted to have carplay in my car.
But i've seen the Pioneer DEH-X6900BT (never model) is cheaper. Maybe get this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01KKHSYGE/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile

u/thataverageguymike · 1 pointr/BMW

Without iDrive there is no audio over Bluetooth. You'll need a Bluetooth adapter. That particular one is powered by USB and then plugs in the AUX jack under the armrest. Just set your head unit to AUX and you're good to go. I've been using one since October of '17 and it works great.

You won't have steering wheel controls but in order to get that functionality you'd have to shell out close to $100 for a different model that's made specifically for BMWs.

u/tysoasn · 1 pointr/firstworldproblems

You could also look at swapping out the stereo deck in your car. Of course, it is easier and more straightforward with some makes/models than others.

So just to make sure, I can just buy the basic wiring harness, the proper dashkit, and that basic BOSS stereo and I'll be fine? I want to make sure because my bullshit detector was going off when he told me I absolutely needed it, and that the BOSS stereo was not compatible with my stereo, and had the gall to stick to his guns when I told him the stereo that had just had been stolen was an 11-year old basic BOSS stereo.

Once again, I plan on buying this Boss stereo, and this dash kit and wiring harness for a completely stock 2004 Acura RSX. If that looks good, just let me know and I'll order it right now. And of course, I won't be going to Fry's (despite my friend having an employee discount) since the guy that lied to my face is the only one certified to install car audio.

u/praetor- · 3 pointsr/CarAV

The cheapest setup would be to get a basic headunit like this for $55.

If you want a subwoofer your options vary depending on what will fit behind the seat, but the rear outputs from the headunit can be used to power a 2 ohm subwoofer with 70 watts (according to Pioneer) so you can get by without an external amp. If you choose to go this route you'll have to run all 4 stock speakers from the front two channels, though.

u/pppoe123 · 1 pointr/audiobooks

iphone and the iBooks app. Bluetooth headphones is a must. I can work out forever listening to a book. I listened to tom clancy red rabbit this morning for a 40 minute gym session.

I understand you don't like to bring your phone to the gym, but for me it's all about the convenience of one device. I don't even use my point and shoot camera anymore for the same reason, too many devices is too troublesome. Then you have to charge all the separate devices too. Same with my old trusty mp3 player, in college it was great but the phone does it all and more. Then when I get in my car, the phone connects to my cheapo bluetooth adapter and my phone keeps playing the same book. And believe me, if my phone had wireless earphones somehow, you bet I'd stop using the other one I have in a heartbeat.

u/MalteseCow · 2 pointsr/Cadillac

I use this adapter in my CTS4.

  • It connects through the AUX jack in the center console
  • It uses a 12V USB adapter to power it (also in the center console)
  • It connects automatically
  • It stays out of sight
  • The whole setup is well under $10
u/apachexmd · 1 pointr/gadgets

Amazon has these that's usb powered. I have one for my older Kenwood head unit, it has a usb slot right next to the aux port, so it's perfect.

So the only caveat is that it doesn't route phone calls to the aux port from my HTC M8, just media audio.

u/DrBucket · 1 pointr/GooglePixel

I have used This one for about 2 years with no real issues. I have it connected to USB so it automatically turns on when the car turns on and for the most part my phone will automatically connect to it if Bluetooth is on. While playing the audio is great. If it's on and I have I connected and I'm not playing anything and my car audio is up kinda high, you can hear a little electromagnetic interference like a slight buzz and tick but that may be dirty power from my car so your mileage may vary, but it's fine, once you start playing something it totally goes away. My cigarette lighter is in the arm rest in between the 2 front seats so it stays hidden away.

u/stickman1029 · 1 pointr/MINI

So I get your point, its frustrating when stuff doesn't work right. But have you tried the cable they are telling you that you need? If they tell you thats what it is, then tell them to get one and test it out before you pay for it. Seems pretty straight forward right?

For what its worth, I find these factory stereos to be so useless with tech. I had a VW that constantly froze on the Navigation screen if I had a phone call come in, and a Jeep that liked to randomly reject my phone too. For my Mini, I just bought a $10 Bluetooth adaptor off of Amazon, it plugs into the USB and a 3.5mm cord that's like 2 inches long from it plugs into the 3.5 port beside the USB. Bam, I put my phone in a cradle that is on the dash and I have instant Nav/Google Play/Android Auto/Music/ whatever without the bullshit or cords. Its like a nav screen, only I didnt have to pay like $2 grand for it. I get in my car and it instantly connects, every time.

Also just so you know, you might as well go out in your backyard and set your money on fire if you want to go the lawyer route. Again I get where you are coming from, and yes it should work, but they'll just blame it on the phone and theres no way you can prove its not the phones fault. If you read the fine print in your manual I bet it has language thats something along the lines of, "...will work with compatible smartphones," or something to that effect. All they have to do is say they dont guarantee compatibility with every phone and you are up shit creek.

Sorry for the response that's the length of a novel.

Edit: here's the link to the adaptor I bought. It took a month to get here, and youll have instant Bluetooth, won't even need the USB cord for the iPhone.

Yes, I used to own many of these things (including that one) before getting a aftermarket head unit. I've used cheaper plasticky looking ones too (sold on local gas stations for $5), and I can tell you that the quality of the signal you'll get depends more on the vehicle's ground isolation than the transmitter itself. It's a gamble, my car sounded excelent with this thing... almost no noise, my sister's car sounded like ass. Full of static and you had to crank up volume to the max. These transmitters are a temporal only solution. You'll get static from the speakers, sound quality won't be great, you might even hear taxis' CB radios from time to time (which was a lot of fun I won't lie. You could hear them and they could hear whatever you were playing).

Definitely push your budget a bit and get a head unit: https://www.amazon.com/Blaupunkt-AM-Media-Receiver-Toronto/dp/B07NJQVXDW/(Reviewed by Williston Audio Labs on youtube, It's no lemon.)

u/moralesnery · 2 pointsr/AndroidAuto

There are three types of "Android" headunits:

  • a) You buy a headunit that runs full Android (usually 6.0, 7.0, or newer). This headunit will have a laucher designed for use inside a car, and a set of installed apps that will let you use FM Radio, GPS (sometimes with integrated maps), videos, music, etc. If you don't like these apps, you can open the Play Store from that device and download the apps that you like as if the headunit were a tablet or a phone. This is an example of this kind of headunit. You don't need to connect your phone to the headunit.

  • b) You buy a new car o a headunit that supports Android Auto, like this one. This headunit doesn't run Android, it has its own Operating System and a USB port. To use Android Auto, you need to install and configure the Android Auto App ON YOUR PHONE and then connect your phone to the headunit with a USB cable. The headunit will show a warning asking you if you want to start Android Auto and if you agree, the headunit's screen will show Android Auto start menu. All the function, files and data comes from your phone to the headunit screen.
You can't customize how it looks or behave, and you can only use the apps that are allowed to run by Google.

  • c) You buy a new car but it doesn't support Android Auto. Instead of it, your car runs a customized android called Android Automotive that only run in car's infotainment systems. This is very rare today.

I don´t have a Battery yet, that´s the main problem. I´m not sure what type of source I should get, or what I need.

Well, the description of the charger Board I already ordered weeks ago isn´t saying anything about a protection. the title says only "Protection" without any context, so I don´t know. But I´ll probably order a Powerbank PCB, perhaps even with LCD Screen to be able to see the power usage, for this.

What about the Pioneer AVH4200NEX? You gotta remember, I'm a computer guy, so I know nothing about car parts.

I guess I just assumed all sources we're basically the same. I have aftermarket stereo already. My main concern is SQ

I'm digging the interface on the Sony units. Anyone have any experience with them? Looking at this one particularly: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-XAV-AX100-Android-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B01MF9W0GU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1500478091&sr=8-3&keywords=sony+head+unit

I started with this

Then bought this (in black)

And finally got these, so I can put it back to stock after:

Put that all together and you have a modern looking and sounding navigation system in your NA I don’t know about you, but I had been using a cassette adapter, and this is a big upgrade. All it takes it a little soldering and stuffing wires away.

If you check Amazon right now supposedly it has a release date of tomorrow!

(But I shouldn't order it from them because it'll ship from NY and I'll get sales tax)
