When you start looking as low as $200 you have to really know what you are looking for in the laptop, as conventional laptops do begin to compete in this price range with other devices. As /u/Orangematz said, used/refurbished is definitely a good fit for you, unfortunately I don't know that I could give any specific suggestions in this area. However, if you want to buy new, you may want to consider a Chromebook. You can't run Audacity on a Chromebook natively, but there are some alternative apps available to make this work (see this list for some options).

Alternatively, you mentioned an external hard drive. Do you already have one or would that be included in the budget? If you already have it, you can use this for storage and install Linux on your Chromebook to use Audacity natively (Having an Intel processor in your chromebook is necessary if this is your plan).

If you are feeling very adventurous, you could purchase a Raspberry Pi like the one here. This runs Linux natively and should be able to handle Audacity without issue, although it may take some tinkering to get up and running the first time, especially if this is your first foray into Linux. The Raspberry Pi 3 is missing three things that laptops have, keyboard and mouse, and display. That display only comes with a cigarette lighter power adapter, so you would need a 12 V adapter. Note that this solution has a lot of parts compared to one laptop, and the display is smaller and lower resolution than you are likely to get in a good laptop, so this is really a nifty solution to your problem that adds in a bunch of extra functionality (your display can play audio/video from USB/SD and can be mounted to the back of a headrest while your computer is a neat little hobbyist device that can have a bunch of different uses besides just computer), but not really recommendable if you aren't enthusiastic about those things.

For something along the same vein but slightly less adventurous if you don't feel comfortable with Linux would be to replace the raspberry pi in the previous solution with an Intel Compute Stick (comes with windows). Alternatively, the display can be replaced with a significantly better or somewhat better and significantly cheaper monitor if portability is something you are willing to compromise on (the Raspberry Pi/Compute Stick would still be very portable, but you would need to find an HDMI-enabled display to plug into).

In conclusion, buying used/refurbished is a good idea, but if you are open to it, the "microcomputer" market segment is starting to come up to par with laptops in this price range and could offer some interesting alternative solutions for you. Wow, that was a long comment.

The reviews seem mixed, but I grabbed the first one that said "DVD" and "HDMI" which covers most bases.

and if you don't want to mount one screen to the ceiling I'm sure you could use this:

https://www.amazon.com/WONNIE-Portable-Players-Headrest-Rechargeable/dp/B07PY75JFX/ref=sr_1_3?crid=30H766DHBNHZ9&keywords=head+rest+dvd+players+for+car&qid=1568994794&sprefix=head+res%2Caps%2C183&sr=8-3

or something similar and add some sort of third monitor.

The last question would be sound, which I think is more about preference. They seem to have built in speakers. If they are not loud enough, Do you wanted it routed through the car audio? Aux jack would probably work. Separate? Im sure you could rig something up with inexpensive amazon speakers.

Im a nut about cable management and having things look factory so if I were to do this like this i would spend a bunch of time routing wires and doing custom brackets and such. I think it could work pretty well

We determines that our LO was getting carsick (just like mom!) after the 3rd puking incident on 3 separate trips. We started using dramamine before the recommended age limits as well - started using half a dose and moved up as needed.

We also found that LO looking down at the tablet in the car was not helping AT ALL, but was totally necessary due to the length of the car trip. We purchased this which mount the device to the headrest and makes LO look up: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076SZ62X2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Between the dramamine, headrest mount, and limiting dairy intake before car rides, we haven't had any issues this year.

Good Luck and make sure to pack for accidents just in case (we had to pull over, clean out the car, and change LO on the side of the road in the middle of a midwest winter - was not prepared).

I'm having trouble figuring this out in a living room.

the dock has one HDMI port.

that goes to a SPLITTER?

where in the OS do you assign player A and B to monitor1 and C and D to monitor 2

I'm guessing whatever you saw was 2 switches.. with USB-C networking or ad hoc wifi.

9" 1080p-ish

Super slim design with 1/3 inch thickness, screen ratio is 16:9, high digital screen resolution is 1024x600 pixels.

if it is possible, I can't see how you do it without hardware kung-fu.. some kind of magical black box..

I'm thinking a second console and a pair of "seat back stands" is going to be the most elegant solution.

How are these not workable?

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_23?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=3.5mm+to+1+4+stereo+adapter&sprefix=3.5mm+to+1%2F4%22+Stereo+Ad%2Caps%2C268&crid=19468BGXZBAPV

You have sockets and plugs, but you have not clearly identified them. We assume the Drum Module has Sockets, but are they 3.5mm (1/8") or 1/4" or Both.

And what is on the other end of the cable? If you can find a long cable that adapts 1/4" Plug to a 3.5mm (1/8") Plugs, does that do the job?

There are certainly 3.5mm Stereo to 1/4" Stereo cables. There are 3.5mm Stereo to 3.5mm Stereo cables. There are 1/4" to RCA cables.

Surely the job can be done, but you have to specifically identify each socket on each piece of equipment to know what is the right cable for the job. You also need to identify the length of cables you need.

That’s a tough one. This one from Amazon doesn’t need the bars, but the shape of the top might not make it work. You could do what we did for our kids and just get another used iPad for your other kid to watch. You can pick them up pretty cheap.

u/redpaper8 · 1 pointr/CarPlay

How about this 10.1” media player form amazon? It supports airplay and from a video on YouTube looks like the touch on the screen also works with the phone.

Not CarPlay but airplay screen mirroring.

Bam ! done , holds in any position you want

u/streamstreamstream · 1 pointr/galaxynote10

not the exact model, but i was thinking something like this with a lighter charger. I have two lighter ports in my car, so one could be for the monitor, the second could be for a Qi Wireless car mount.

u/galnar · 1 pointr/CarAV

No, it is an active splitter. Looks similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/BOSS-BVAM5-Signal-Amplifier-Outputs/dp/B00011KLSO

I tore the dash apart and confirmed it actually was a loose RCA cable on the splitter. I reseated it and all is well. Thanks for replying.

u/TaylorR137 · 2 pointsr/Vive

Cheap tiny monitor

Have you made sure in your windows power options that when plugged in, closing the lid doesnt sleep/turn off? On my old macbook I'd have to plug an external keyboard in to wake it up closed.

u/ironfixxxer · 1 pointr/buildapc

I've seen this kind of thing done. You can use a small 7" or so HDMI screen like this. and possibly mount in there. Might need to remove it from the casing though to get it to fit.

I have one of those screens and use it to display NZXT CAM but I didn't put it inside my case.

u/Snatch_yo_chain420 · 5 pointsr/CrownVictoria

Any android double din will do. There's a range of them, but I went cheaper and it works fine.

Here is the thinnest one I could find

edit* I just noticed that it doesn't appear to be battery powered. Here is a battery powered one, but it is much thicker.

u/twitchtvletters123 · 1 pointr/simracing

I bought something similar to this (do your own shopping, I'm not endorsing anything): https://www.amazon.com/SallyBest%C2%AE-Inch-Ultra-Thin-16/dp/B01769QEWA/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=mini+lcd+screen&qid=1565451713&s=gateway&sr=8-5

I just slide it out of the way when I'm not using the gauges.

u/FoN925 · 2 pointsr/PS4

Would something like this work? I realize it says its for use in a car, but looking at the back of the device, it looks like it just uses a standard 12V AC adapter for power.

Edited to add: I'm not sure what kind of budget you have, but if money is no object, you can look at the GAEMS Personal Gaming Environment. They are expensive ~$200-$300+ but they include decent screens and are designed for gaming on the go, when a TV isn't available.

u/WRSaunders · 2 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

We can. Here is one The problem is that outside the RV market, there isn't much demand. Cell phones with downloaded or streamed TV fill most of the niche.
