Well, we were not in any kind of rush to be honest, so while we could have done it quicker, it didn't take too long either. We drove for roughly 10-12 hours per day (some people do like 18-hour days which I was not going to do). Our first leg was 790 miles/11 hours driving + 1 hour lunch + 1 hour casual stops from Winnetka, CA to Grand Junction, CO. Second leg was Grand Junction, CO to Topeka, KS (790 miles/12 hours + 2 hour lunch in Denver + 1 hour casual stops), then Topeka to Nashville (620 miles/9 hours + 1 hour lunch + 1 hour casual stops) - We could have saved time/gas going to Louisville, but my wife really wanted to see Nashville!. Last was Nashville to D.C. (650 miles/10 hours + 1 hour lunch).

Total time for the trip was roughly 50 hours of driving, and over the course of 4 days/3 nights. The money spent on gas was stupidly low because the Mazda averaged 38 MPG. I think I calculated the total being something like $102, which was phenomenal. The hotels were a different story though. We didn't look for the cheapest - we looked for a comfortable place that was a good deal. I think we stayed in a Doubletree in Grand Junction, Hyatt in Topeka, and Doubletree again in Nashville. We averaged about $180/night for around $540 in hotel fees.

As for what we took with us: We had a 1 bedroom condo (leasing) that we had just moved into 6 months before I got the job offer in Virginia, so we didn't have a whole lot of stuff. I was able to break the lease with the owner (so long as I got him a tenant before I moved out), and the new tenant had just moved to the U.S. from Russia and had literally nothing - so I sold him ALL my furniture for a cheap price, gave my TV to my sister, and didn't have to worry about anything else. We then crammed the car with all the clothes we actually wear, donated the leftovers, and packed up our plates/flatware, two laptops, and misc kitchenware into the car. We saved a good amount of space by not using suitcases and instead used boxes from Costco to hold the kitchen stuff, and trash bags for clothes.

If you're bringing a cat, I think you would definitely want to stay in a motel along the way, haha. They don't like being crammed up for too long. If your cat is good with cars, then I'd say let them roam. If they hate cars (like my cat from many years ago did), then I'd say get a soft carry-bag for pets and stick them in it.

And lastly the dashcam: This is the exact dashcam I purchased from Amazon. It has worked great and I have not had any issues with it whatsoever. The quality is very crisp and clear during the daytime, and the mic works fairly well. Nighttime performance is not fantastic, but it gets the job done. One thing that I did was after every leg of the journey at the hotel, I downloaded all the footage from the dashcam and saved it on my external hard drive. At the end of the trip I had our entire trip in raw footage, which I plan to consolidate into a 10 minute film in the near future.

This dashcam ticks all the marks I was looking for (1080p, wide angle, auto on, loop recording) and I think it is reasonably priced compared to the other options with similar specs. Note that you will need your own micro SD card but 8gb should be enough since in the case of an accident you really only need like 2-3 minutes recorded at max.

Unfortunately it will not fit into the GoPro mount out of the box (I honestly don't think there are any on the market that do). But I was able to buy a GoPro mounting kit for around $15 and then used a couple simple tools (hacksaw, sandpaper, epoxy) to Frankenstein a mount using the parts that come with the camera and it works great! If you are really interested I can take and share some pics of the mount I was able to work out.

For me some small but life changing accessories that I can live without would have to be my air vent mount (I had to look for one with a longer clamp since my ES 350 vent was sorta recessed), a car charger, and a dashcam as a piece of mine if my car ever gets hit and run and also just in case someone tries to blame an accident on me. And I also recommend getting a window tint for heat reduction, privacy, and protection of the cars interior and the best one in my opinion is the LLumar Nano IR Tint. And also for the exterior you should check out a ceramic coating (best consumer one is CQuartz UK 3.0, check out pan the organizer youtube channel for more details) or maybe even a clear bra. Air vent mount: kinda just got luckily with some random one at the store, but check out the different options and styles of phone holders and see which one you like best.

I would not get one that cheap with some of the reviews indicating it stopped working so quickly. Below is a link to what I've been using for almost a year (purchased last June), in Texas where it is about as hot as Florida. It has worked great for me so far and it keeps the date & settings saved even if I don't use my car for a few days (losing the date and settings was a problem with other capacitor based cameras I'd used). It is less expensive than the Guardian brand models, night footage might not be as good as those but it is adequate for me. I feel this one was a good deal. But there are plenty of good cameras out there.

I don't know too much about dash cams, but I do have this one and it is pretty good. Amazing quality overall, even at night. One thing I do have to say is to be careful with dash cams in extreme heat since they can get damaged on a hot summer day with the windows up. My Rexing did get damaged this way, but the company sent me a new one for free right away.
If you are looking into buying a dash cam, I would recommend looking at YouTube guides/reviews as well as Amazon reviews. I do recommend them to everyone though as they can be a life saver.

The camera is an alright camera, but the price is way too high for what you seem like you need.

Will you set up the speed camera alerts through your wifes phone? Does she speed?

1 Expensive option. It is nice because it connects to your phone, so you can download/view the video immediately...comes with a "rear" camera that you can install, and all works on Sony technology.

I have a Rexing V1 that works pretty well (there are some newer, fancier models as well). 1080p video and 170 degree field of view with file lengths of 3, 5, or 10 minutes. Auto locks video file if impact is detected and has a button that you can push to manually save a file. Once the card is out of space, it will overwrite the oldest files. If you look in my post history you'll see a question I had about a mounting issue, but it was easily resolved and is working fine now, so I have no complaints.

I have a friend with an AUKEY. The AUKEY camera has a motion detection feature that can activate the camera when the vehicle is off which could be a benefit if someone approached you at a gas station while filling up or when you're walking up to your car from a building. r/dashcams is a good resource for reviews/opinions and features of different ones.

I'm pretty sure this is it. I like how I can hide it behind my mirror. The quality is decent, and it has a battery that allows the camera to continue to record for a certain amount of time after the engine is shut off.

Most of the time I forget it's there until something fun happens on the road. Have had it for over a year and the peace of mind is worth way more than the cost of the camera.

I have this. Saved my family a huge hassle after getting sideswiped. Cop saw the footage at the scene and laughed, "well that makes this easy. You're in the clear". The blackvue is popular and sounds nice, but I didn't feel the need for the wifi or cloud features. So I went with a pair of Rexing V1 cameras, front and rear. For power I made a y-cable and attached it to the extra 12V connector in the headliner compartment. Then I ran power cables through the headliner. The front cable is pretty much out of view. The cable for the rear camera runs exposed for several inches from the rear pillar to the back window — not ideal, but it doesn't bother me.

A year later, I'm happy with the Rexing. Video quality seems fine. I haven't had to use it for anything serious yet, but it helped me identify an object that whacked into me on the freeway.

Here are some of the parts I used. If you do your own installation, pick up some micro2 fuses. It's easy to blow one while working on the power supply. You'll also need a multimeter so you can identify the correct wires for 12V power.

I have an A119. Good picture quality and a decent price. Street Gaurdian has some of the best night vision around. Blackvue is one of the most discrete.

Don't get the Rexing. It is a clone of the A118 and they bought their way to Amazon's best sellers. It is not a terrible cam, but the A119 is better, cheaper, and is not a knockoff with fake Amazon ratings.

This is the one that I have in my car, but there are other cheaper options that should work pretty well also. You can get a perfectly decent one for $50 or even less. The cheaper ones just tend to be a bit more unreliable.

I save little random clips of funny shit I see all the time with the press of a single button. Couldn't be easier. And it's stealthy because it mounts right against the windshield. No suction cup mount was a HUGE part of why I chose it. Can't bounce around, way less likely to fall off, etc

This video from Flex your Rights is pretty good. I used tips from the first section of it to get out of two speeding tickets.

The second section covers how to deal with police when they interact with you on the street and the third covers when they come to your home. Flex Your Rights has other good videos with more example situations.

It's also a good idea to invest in a dashcam, so conversations during a traffic stop can be recorded. A cop's word will trump a private citizen's, but it won't trump an audio recording. I have a Rexing V1, but have heard good things about the G1W, which is much cheaper.

You're going to be surprised at how simple they are once you do put in some time to research them.

Mine is as simple as sticking it to the top of my windshield and plugging it in to the power. It will probably come with one of those power adapters that plugs into the circular-shaped power port (that cigarette lighter thing), but I got one of these and a long USB power cable instead, since it takes up less space and gives me an extra USB plug so I can charge whatever else.

I'd suggest this one, it's the one I have. The instructions are super easy to follow, and it has everything you need. They also have a comprehensive tutorial on their website if you need it.

You don't need to be techie to install a dashcam. You just need the dashcam and a few minutes. It must have taken me a total of 15 minutes to get my car set up with mine, and that includes the time it took to hide the wire properly.

One more note, if you are going to consider buying one. If your car gets hot while it's parked, consider getting a model that is detachable (like the one I referenced - you stick a small piece of plastic that allows the cam to clip on or off) or one that is mounted to the rear-view mirror. When your car gets hot, it softens the adhesive or suction, and the weight of the dasmcam might pull it away. In my case, the small piece of plastic is so light that it doesn't matter, I simply put it on and take it off when I need to. And if it's clamped to the mirror, the heat is a non-issue.

Ive been using this one for nearly 3 years now. There are two newer models one that does 4K and another with a rear cam.
I did have a freezing issue at first but that went away when I swapped with a different sd card. I like how it attaches with double sided tape instead of a cheap clip that will break after you hit your third pothole.

Absolutely, it really depends on what you want. My first dash cam was the Rexing V1 Dash Cam. It is one of the cheapest on the market that is still very reliable. However, it only covers the front of the car. I recently upgraded to a BlackSys CH-100B. This one is a little bit more expensive, but it comes with a rear camera as well. Blacksys has an app that can connect with the built-in wifi of their cameras that allows you to change settings and review footage from your phone. If you want more information there is a subreddit devoted to dashcams. Hope this helps!

Seems like the Lumina Zoom has some quality issues based on this other product listing. Looks like the same product but the huge disparity in the reviews is really sketchy.

Also, the Viofo A119 has a capacitor instead of a battery like in the Rexing V1, which may be more reliable under high temperature.

My last one was a G1W, but I eventually had issues with the suction cup mount so I went with the B40/A118-style this time around. The heat-related issues I've had were more due to physical issues like the mounting hardware and not the battery. FWIW the battery on my old G1W still works even after >1yr in Texas sun in a black car, but YMMV. Probably still a good recommendation. Also recommend hardwiring into the fusebox instead of using the cigarette lighter adapter, if possible.

I've heard good things about this one if anyone is interested. The quality looks pretty amazing from YouTube videos I've seen from day and even night looked decent.

Another thing I thought was neat about this one is that it claims it detects an accident (by g-force) and will lock the video.

I've had a few dashcams and always remove them when I'm out of the vehicle for more than a few minutes. The easiest to remove is the Rexring and the image quality is above average. I also had the G1W-C (capacitor version), but the housing cracked and the ball on suction cup assembly eventually seized. The Rexring build quality is much better than the G1W-C, although I think the G1W-C video looked a little better.

Though they make one that has a rear view camera as well, and at this point I wish I had gotten that version to have front and rear facing cameras.

If you're on the fence there are cheap like 20 dollar cameras that I initially bought and used for a year to get used to having one.

My only gripe is that the adhesive that attaches part of the connector piece that holds the dash cam to the window melts in any temperature above 80 degrees, causing it to fall. I finally superglued the connector to the dash cam clip and it stays perfectly in 100+ degree weather.

I bought a Rexing camera off of Amazon that has been holding up well. Link here, I have this model with an included back camera that cost me $20 more.

You can go with whatever camera you want based on personal preference and budget, but I would recommend you get one that's a capacitor model, not a battery one. The capacitor ones only last a few seconds while the car is turned off fully but that's fine, you won't have to worry about a battery dying and leaking all over your car.

It's really really rough man, I feel like moron drivers are almost attracted to the car too. Just yesterday I was stuck in front of this guy who I could see in my rearview mirror texting and driving. He had to slam on his brakes FOUR times before I finally got a chance to get in the next lane and get out of his way.

Oh and definitely definitely DEFINITELY get a camera. I found this one on Amazon to be one of the cheapest yet high quality cameras around. I paid 150 for it but right now it's only 99 for an easy to install, high quality camera.

I've had a Rexing V1 for a couple of years. $100 makes it a bit on the expensive side, but I'd rather have something I can count on. It has a capacitor, not a lithium ion battery, which is important in high heat environments. I was able to hide the cord pretty easily under the passenger front floor mat, A pillar, headliner, etc. Plugged it into a power port in the center storage box under the armrest.

It would also prove whether lanes were jumped or not! This is the one I have. Took me about 20 minutes to install. Super easy! No, it doesn't upload automatically or use data. You put a micro sd in it. The card I have will hold 16hrs of video. Once the 16hrs is reached, it starts recording over the oldest footage. So you will always have the last 16hrs of footage available to you.

I got the one linked below. It only takes max of a 32GB micro sd, but it'll record 7 hrs at 1080 or about 15 hrs at 720. I got a fuse jumper and ran the cord up my pillar cover from the interior fuse box and just popped it up the front lip of my headliner. This dash cam is great for how cheap it is.

I put mine right behind the rear view mirror. I can’t see it, passengers can’t see it, and no one else notices it when the car is parked. You can hang it a little lower if you want to see the screen, but I’m happy with it invisibility recording.

And for what it’s worth, I’ve always wired mine to a source that turns on and off with the car. It records for a few minutes after it looses power, and I’ve never wanted more than that.

Recently installed this in my fiancée's 2014 Forester. Installation and set up are very easy. Subaru's interior... character make hiding the cable into the interior panels pretty easy. It was somewhat more difficult to install in my 2010 Buick Lacrosse (I know, I'm hoping to have a WRX within the next three years) due to how tightly fit the panels and such were. Easy playback, HD, everything. It's mid-range as far as price is concerned, but that money goes toward night-time quality and overall durability of the camera.

I highly recommend getting a dashcam so you don't have to make any guesses whose fault it is.

I bought this one. It has a wide angle lens, G-sensor (saves recording in a crash) and it’s easily mounted on the windshield, also, the shape of the dash cam makes it possible to be discrete.

Edit: It’s expensive but there are other models that are cheaper but may lack some fancy features. The key is to have a dash cam, be it a $300 gizmo or a $20 Walmart special, anything will help in an incident.

It was around 80 bucks when I bought it and is in Amazon for a little over 50 bucks.

All of these cameras have battery in them instead of the capacitor, so My Cobra 820 is starting to fail on me. luckily i kow how to use it that it isn't that big of a deal for me, but if i forget to press the 3 buttons, before i drive, then it won't record anything. the summer heat made it so when the camera loses power, the next time it comes back on, it will have the date and time reset back to January 1, 2000 at 12:00 AM. But i just press 3 buttons and it records normally.

But if you are willing to drop 250 on a dash cam, I say get a go pro. Set it to record on 1080 with 60fps. It will record much smoother than most dash cams. The only issue i have with having a go pro as a dash cam, is if you want to use it as a regular action camera, but forget to place it back on as a dash camera, or the fact that it is a recognizable item and may be prone to people wanting to take it, while the vehicle is parked.


Do not get a dash cam that records front and back. The reason is that the rear/inner camera usually suck. Also if you are driving at night, the camera won't be able to see you, even with the "night vision" infrared diodes. They don't work as well as I wish they did, and you will use up space with unusable video footage. If you do want dual cameras, either have 2 dash cams set up or one dash cam that has the rear camera that hooks up via a cable, but remember that most of the secondary cameras are usually low quality.

i did a driving test of the cam today and it seems really solid. smooth crisp video and the audio is pretty good quality as well.

its job insurance because if you get in a crash and its not your fault, you can prove that. CDL drivers are automatically assumed at fault for any crash, so proving that you werent at fault goes a long way. like for example if you plowed into someones rear end because he cut you off and then immediately braked, you'd be boned without a cam. its happened to me twice and im not about to let it happen unfilmed if it does.

I use this absolutely in love with the quality, it can slide off the mount if you want to store it but I have mine just to the left of the mirror and have never taken it down and it’s never been stolen

Sure this is the one I got from amazon. It comes with a very long wire so I ran it on the corner and edge of the window to keep it always plugged in. The camera turns on by itself when I start the car, and turns off after few seconds after you turn on the car. Didnt really need to configure anything on the camera itself.

I think theres a subreddit for dash cams as well and they have a lot of recommendations there also.

Absolutely! I can't stop recommending a dash cam in everyone's car. Having one has saved me twice in previous cars, where it's my word against theirs in a accident. I show the police officer the video and it's case closed.

I tapped into 12V ignition power from the sunroof controls, others have used mirror power to feed cams. Also, be sure to only use a "Class 10" SD card to avoid file errors. You can use T-taps (see album link above for example) for a simple connection, I would only recommend using T-taps for very low power consuming devices, otherwise use butt splices (source: 10 year industrial power & controls technician)

It's a rexing v1. Had it about two years and I would recommend it, the only issue I've had is likely due to my own laziness. The manual states you need to reformat the sd card once a month. I don't always do that and have had some videos come up with errors because of it.

The class level is the writing speed of the sd card. Class 10 means it can write at ~10MB/s. My last Dash cam was simliar to the one i'm about to post. I liked it a lot because of it's compact nature, it wasn't too noticeable.

So I didn't have to modify the car in any permanent way. I made it for my 2005 WRX, and just moved it over to my new 2017 WRX last week.

I have a Rexing Dash Cam and I like it a lot. You just run a cable from the cam to an aux port in your car and it does everything else for you. It records on a loop, so if nothing is saved from previous driving time, it goes back and deletes that data so you don't have to worry about your SD card getting filled up. Just turn your car on and you're set.

I've got it tucked up as high as I can get it while still being able to remove it off of its bracket if I need to. It sits behind/in front of (however you look at it) the rear view mirror. I'm constantly going through security checkpoints because of my job and it's hardly ever noticed. I think it's been spotted and mentioned twice in the year I've had it.

Yeah, the tech in dash cams is minimal by today's standards and $100 ones with wide angle lens are more than sufficient for everyone

I have my G1W permanently wired behind the rearview mirror. It's also not a bad idea to have a second one facing out the rear window.

Most cameras have a small display screen, well at least mine does. Your able to replay back video, save videos as your driving by pressing a button, also take pictures with it if your involved in a accident. Just pop it off and it has a battery to do as you need for your records. I got mine off amazon for like 100$ and it has recorded bad drivers which none have hot me yet.

The quality is good but depending on how far away the car is/lighting it might not grab the plate. Rexing has a 4K model but not sure how the quality is with that one. If you leave the mic on, I always make it a point to read the plate out loud so I have it recorded.

There's a more expensive version that I think they just came out with. I would go with the $100 one because I think they fixed most of the bugs. Mine works fine and I bought it about 4 months ago.

I've had the Rexing V1 for a summer and it's been fine. I don't drive often so my car sits outside for usually 2-3 weeks at a time before being driven, and I don't have air conditioning so it never really cools down. I do have covered parking though so my car is only hit for about half the day.

You can find some as low as $57, like this expired Slick Deal. I just ordered this one on Amazon today.

It’s the Rexing Dashcam. I like it because of the slanted shape that fits the slant of the windshield. I do not have it facing the rear yet, but and considering getting one.

This is my video. Glad to hear about this sub, didn't know it existed! For anyone interested, I am recording on a Rexing V1 driving in Pennsylvania. The driver's brakes were fine, he just wasn't paying attention. I was lucky enough to be checking my rearview at the right time. I didn't move further into the right lane because I was thinking that there may be someone there. Thinking back, I probably should have just hauled ass into the right lane anyways vs risk the semi driver not being that far over to the left and catching me between him and the dumb truck in front of me. My Corolla would not have fared well.

Use your phone as navigation. Get one of those smartphone mounts that can be put on your dash or ones that can clip to your air vents to hold your phone. If your worried about wasting data, you can download offline maps on Google Maps..
