I somehow managed to score the Rhino Rack for $152.71 on Amazon, which is about 1/3 the original cost. I'm pretty sure it was a return or scratch-and-dent because the package was partially opened and there was a 4" gouge along the bottom of the rear cross bar. I just used some black enamel paint to cover it up.

Rhino Rack 2016-2017 Compatible with Chevrolet Cruze Including Limited 4dr Sedan Vortex RS 2500 Sport Roof Rack Black RS215B

The ROLA Cargo Basket was $119.59 which again, I somehow managed to get at 30% off. I guess constantly scouring Amazon eventually pays off. The basket is pretty well constructed and very strong, but it's also heavy thick steel. I would have preferred aluminum to save weight.

ROLA 59504 V-Tex Rooftop Cargo Basket

I also got the ROLA Cargo Net that fits the rack. I figured it was best to get the matching one in case any of the other random ones on Amazon didn't fit correctly. Also very strong and has just enough stretch to accommodate about 8" of cargo in the basket.

Finally, I ordered a two pack of Cruze logo stickers off eBay and rubbed off the ROLA logo to put that in its place. Adds a nice custom touch.

I have these roof bars on my 2012 Mazda3 hatch, and I'm happy with it. Price is way cheaper than the Mazda OEM bars. Some wind noise beginning at 40mph, but if you listen to music, it's easily tuned out.

As for the bike rack, you've got a lot of options here, but brand wise you're probably looking at either Thule or Yakima. I went with the Yakima Forklift and I love it. As long as you can easily pop off your front wheel, this is fast and extremely stable (plus if you buy the additional locking mechanism for like $20, the skewer key-locks your fork in place). You can't go wrong with Thule either, but I find Yakima is typically cheaper for a similar product.

u/Peakbrowndog · 1 pointr/Kayaking

roof rack. the roof rack (or rails) runs front to back, cross bars run across. neither Yakima or Thule make a roof rack for your car, so you're going to be stuck with a generic rack. Maybe something like this or this.

Ideally, you get a roof rack and cross bars. Canoes don't use J-racks. You could just use foam blocks and ratchet straps, but it's sketchy if you're going too fast or far. I've made 400 mile trips using foam blocks, but you got to be sure and tie it down well and use bow and stern lines.

Here's a great expanation of how to tie it down. It's worth buying the hood tie down things, $7 on Amazon.

First real usage tomorrow with this setup, but I hauled 2 bikes on it to test it and hit speed bumps etc. and it handled them beautifully. Not to mention this entire solution was a solid $40, and probably could’ve been cheaper if I had shopped more carefully.

For anyone else trying this, do it! Super easy to setup.

I have a 2DR with the rear seat out and absolutely love it. Light, nimble, feels like a toy. Excellent city car actually due to parallel parking capabilities. I would only go 4DR if you have hauling needs or anything more than a significant other & dog. If you do go 2DR i'd suggest grabbing one of these: https://www.amazon.com/CURT-18153-Basket-Style-Cargo-Carrier/dp/B00JF5LRN0/ref=zg_bs_15735311_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HR7SDTG5WGZZ1GKJCX0J

In fact I just drove across the country camping with both of them in the car and it was workable with that additional cargo space

Edit: Hard top is pretty easy to move on and off 2DR w/ 2 people, so I went hard

u/alf3311 · 4 pointsr/4Runner

Correct, you don't want gas in the vehicle. If you are looking for something easy you could get a hitch-mounted cargo tray. It will limit your off-road clearance (specifically your departure angle) but if you are just talking about camping/overlanding and not hard-core rock climbing it would probably be OK.

EDIT: I also have to add... I know a lot of people think carrying around extra gas cans looks badass but for most people it's really unnecessary. With a little bit of planning, the 25 23-gallon tank built in is enough for almost anything. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but there are definitely costs associated with the hardware required. Plus it's also a bit of a safety hazard... if you get rear-ended or back into a tree, there's a good chance those tanks will puncture and make the situation a lot worse.

u/gaugasus · 4 pointsr/rav4club

Yep. I was surprised but the Skybox 21 fits quite nicely on my 2019. The hatch even opens fully by just a hair.

I went with OEM crossbars due to the price, these CargoLoc crossbars are great except for the wind noise while driving:

Its from amazon. I saw a guy in a parking lot with a sweet 3rd gen. He had this basket. He said it was sold on amazon as a "Bison Roof Basket". When i searched for it I found that they changed ownership or names etc, and now operate under "Arkensen roof basket". Its a 3 piece and really well put together. Also really fits the size of the roof proportionally as well

here is the link.

Very solid buy and also qualifies for amazon prime which is nice :)

u/hillshmill · 3 pointsr/Kayaking

Does your Grand Cherokee have the side rails that run along the edges of the roof but not across? If yes - I recently bought this set of cross bars from amazon and an really happy with them. I also have a GC and they are the easiest and most secure cross bars I’ve ever installed.

u/jasonjavelin · 2 pointsr/4Runner

I got this one from Amazon!
Steel Motorcycle Scooter Dirtbike Carrier Hauler Hitch Mount Rack Ramp Anti Tilt https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018SCMIR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_zX8KIxtXDNpe1

Been pretty happy with it although I had to loosen and re tighten it a few times to make it straight. If you over tighten the bolt the metal will cave a bit but overall it's been super sturdy. The anti tilt thing it comes with is trash though. I bought an after market pin and it still has some movement but wasn't terrible.

Edit: The capacity is rated for 500 lbs for the carrier but it's all about the tongue weight of the hitch. My KDX is only like 250-300 lbs altogether but I can sit on the bike with it on the the rack just fine to tighten the straps down!

u/phillymexican · 2 pointsr/Dirtbikes

If you only have one bike to transport, another option is to get any vehicle that fits your budget but make sure it has a trailer hitch attachment point!

Step two, get a motorcycle rack hitch! They’re like $50-$100 (I got mine used on Craigslist) and they can pretty much make any car with a hitch a dirt bike transport, just need some straps.

I only got a truck fairly recently so between my teenage years stuffing my TTR into my mom’s van and then using a trailer hitch attachment with my beater car before my Tacoma, I figured out ways to make it work!

Here’s the hitch I’m talking about

Thanks! It was about $120 and it was super easy to install yourself! Make sure you buy the crossbars first! Here's a link to the rack:

ARKSEN 64" Universal Black Roof Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013COCXDC?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

u/BootyButtPirate · 2 pointsr/Kayaking

I have a 2003 4runner so its slightly bigger than your 3rd gen. My wife and I each have 10' entry level sit in rec kayaks. I successfully mount and carry both on the factory roof rack with 2 pairs of cheap Amazon J hooks. I can lift and mount the kayaks solo but its much easy with two people. I put 2 ratcheting tie straps over the kayaks securing them to the cross bars and side rails (not the J hooks). I use a bow and stern lines attached to the front recovery loops and rear hitch. It works well. If I were doing longer distance driving (200+ miles) with the kayaks I would probably get some higher grade J Hooks.

Here is the 2 Pairs of J Hooks (thats 4 total) for about $60.
Link

I bought an aftermarker set of cross rail for my wife's Odyessy and another set of J Hooks. I mount and carry them the same way. The van is newer and and cleaners so we only use it for the drop off vehicle. Here is the after market cross rails (that also fit my 4runner) Link

I hadn't even looked at OEM but everyone seems to recommend them! This is very helpful in my decision. Thank you. Is this basically what you have?

u/NotDavidWooderson · 3 pointsr/cycling

I think that's a great idea, if the drywall support bar doesn't work, look at cargo dividers as well. They're strong and cheap.

u/fortinwithwill · 3 pointsr/Jeep

Mine is the Barricade roof rack from extremeterrain.com and it has a basket on it from Amazon. The roof rack is very good. I go to Moab like 20 times a year and this thing has been so awesome. It looks cool (I have had people stop me on the street to ask where I got it) and it's super tough and adds a ton of storage to the TJ. I installed mine alone in about 3 hours. It's a good purchase.

It's this one

TYGER Heavy Duty Roof Mounted Cargo Basket Rack | L47" x W37" x H6" | Roof Top Luggage Carrier | With Wind Fairing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FNDCSTO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_KDP7ybPW49KGK

It appears to be 100% identical to the rhino, but over $100 cheaper. Only difference is it says tyger instead of rhino. I didn't know the x style came in any other size. Really doesn't matter. I. The three months I've had it, I put nothing in it except my my crushed dreams of good gas milage. Looks cool though 😂

u/Boogerschmidt · 0 pointsr/Kayaking

I highly recommend the very cheap kind that just straps to your roof. 30 seconds to put on, 30 seconds to take off. I have been using this one, and I'm super happy with it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015D19SS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It seems like various Subaru dealers have them at different prices online. My local dealer has them set to about $160 So I would be getting them for free.

I mainly would like to haul firewood, shovel, awning and my huge tent in a basket on my roof. I was thinking of getting this basket from Amazon Arksen since it's length is adjustable

u/dispatch_geek · 2 pointsr/ToyotaTacoma

I use a Swagman adjustable truck bed bike rack in my 2015 DCSB.

Swagman Adjustable Truck Bed Bike Rack

It fits great and is rock solid between my side bed tracks. I mount the two bikes and move it rear wheel to its respective side of the bed and I am able to close the tailgate with no issues.
The bike rack has a lock that keeps it from being undone and both bike carriers lock as well. Then I run a cable through the rear wheels, frame and front wheels that is locked into the rear tie down points in the bed.

I will be using it this weekend. If you are interested I can snap a picture of the setup for you.

u/nokios · 2 pointsr/mazda3

I'm not sure about 2010, but I got a Rola roof rack for my '12. Works pretty well. I recommend getting a wind-deflector though..

u/bentreflection · 8 pointsr/overlanding

this rooftop bag from Amazon. I drove from Los Angeles, through banff, to anchorage (over 5k miles) with it on the roof. It rained everyday of our trip for a month straight and never leaked a drop of water. It's still on my roof and it's rained on us almost every day we've been in ak. Amazing deal.

Also, if you're over landing you need to get an air compressor so you can air down and up if you need. I would also recommend an inverter and an extension cord so you can plug stuff in.

Additionally, I'd invest in some anker cigarette lighter and iPhone charging cables, as well as one of those large extra charge battery packs.

Also this little light is awesome. I use it all the time.

u/dcon555 · 2 pointsr/JeepPatriot

Have this one on my 2015: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013COCXDC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_kIgPBbDF4CGGV

It works well and looks great. Word of caution to check cross bar measurements and styles to make sure the rack you get will fit properly.

u/heathvs · 2 pointsr/JeepRenegade

I bought these 49.75" bars for my '15 TH and they fit pretty perfectly (width-wise) with maybe an inch extra on either side.

u/ducksaysquackquack · 2 pointsr/4Runner

thanks! HERE is the rack i'm using and for the price, i'm extremely pleased. though due to the max weight of 150lbs, i've only used it so far to throw light camping equipment and a cooler up top. also, i wish it was 10" - 12" longer so that i could have my light bar positioned a bit futher up.

u/Macky941 · 3 pointsr/SubaruForester

I got cargoLocs for $46 two years ago for our crosstrek and recently put them on our 19 Forester, great bars for the price. I coated mine with spray on bed liner and they have held up perfectly! They have held plenty of gear, logs, boxes, kayaks, people lol...here's the link:

https://www.amazon.com/CargoLoc-2-Piece-Aluminum-Roof-Cross/dp/B00GA2HKAU

u/DNApolymerase · 2 pointsr/Kayaking

Its a 6' foot bed, but 7' with the tailgate down. I have a truckbed extender ( like this )on the back that gives me an extra 3-4' . The extender is marked with reflective tape and I usually put a red flag on the end (I hope to get some trailer lights on the extender at some point). About 4' extends past the hitch accessory. I've also put foam on the metal extender to prevent damage. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with how it worked out.

Edit: Also, the fisheye lens on the camera makes them look alot longer than they actually are.

u/fadecomic · 1 pointr/XVcrosstrek

I've got budget crossbars and budget j-racks from amazon. The crossbars are CargoLoc, and they have a decent set of reviews on Amazon. They fit nicely. I'm not sure I 100% trust the locking mechanism that clamps the bars to the rails, so I tie them off to the roof rails to be sure. The bars themselves are extruded aluminum and are fine. If you tie a loop of good rope around the rails as a backup, well, that's not that different from the plastic strap that holds expensive Timberline towers onto the rails. The kayak racks are kayak racks. They're just metal bars and some bolts and plates that hold the racks to the crossbars. The ones I got are budget, but they also have very good reviews from users. They're functionally identical to more expensive racks.

I know some will disagree, and I probably would, too, if I used them more regularly. The CargoLocs certainly are not pretty.

Lots of Crosstreks in the crossbar reviews.

u/torooyo · 1 pointr/crv

That's pretty much it. It has all the same dimensions and had capacity, just has a different sticker on the wind deflector as far as I can tell.

The one I have was like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FQT1FF4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sx7XAbN54SN32

I doubt there's really a difference between them though. If you want a really good one I would personally recommend Yakima or Thule brands, but they can be pretty expensive.

u/robjdlc · 1 pointr/harborfreight

Did some digging and it looks like the super cheap ones (https://www.reddit.com/r/CherokeeXJ/comments/c4bex4/found_some_reviews_of_our_15_ebay_roof_rack_and/) didnt work out (https://www.reddit.com/r/CherokeeXJ/comments/c5xynn/that_roof_rack_aint_looking_so_good/) and the ebay/amazon market has leveled out.

Cheapest I currently found on amazon is still the one I bought in 2018: https://smile.amazon.com/MaxxHaul-70115-Steel-Rack-150-Capacity/dp/B073G49NPV/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=maxxhaul&qid=1570734169&sr=8-1. (Though when I bought it it was $65, currently $70.)

All theMaxxhaul, Leader, Arksen, "Direct Aftermarket" stuff on amazon is all the same thing (like, the same exact product with a different label) as the Haulmaster.

u/idokamaroq · 1 pointr/XVcrosstrek

Whatever you do, don't cheap out and get these like I did unless you want to spend all your free time over the next week to try and get them to stop whistling. They whistle loud at anything over 45mph. Once I get that sorted out, I think I'll be happy with these, though. I (140lbs) climbed up and sat on my basket, and they didn't noticeably bend, or even creak/squeak.

u/FRNLD · 2 pointsr/Volkswagen

How long have you had it?

The Rola is one of the ones I have been looking at.

Looks like a nice low profile. Easy attachment to the crossbars?

u/PelloScrambas · 2 pointsr/GrandCherokee

Thanks!

I bought these bars from a friend.

And I bought a Rola rack at a local truck supply store. Sorry...not sure which model specifically.

u/duhalbs · 4 pointsr/SubaruForester

I would get a dash cam for starters. I personally like to keep my interior clean, aside from audio upgrade in the future, I only have all weather floor mats, collapsible cargo storage & cargo net for the trunk. However, I'm planning to do a lot on the exterior since I plan to do a lot of camping & off roading.

Not sure what if your van has rain gutters or if you can get these, but rain gutter ladder racks provide a good base to mount L Bar, prevents you from needing to drill holes, and is easily removable.

Found this on Amazon in another thread: https://www.amazon.com/Subaru-Fixed-Crossbar-Impreza-E361SFJ000/dp/B008216AVM

I'm in the same boat as you, 2012 Impreza hatch. Last season I just threw skis/snowboards in the back, but I'm looking into making things a bit more comfortable for my passengers this season. Looked on the Thule website, and the crossbars alone are $500+ so this looks pretty good.

u/Sirvini · 2 pointsr/JeepRenegade

Which rails are you talking about? The crossbars or the actual rails themself?

I got a decent set of cross bars off of Amazon and I so far they work great. I'll try to find the link and add it for you.

This is the current basket I have right now here . Only thing I did was add a camo vinyl to the fairing. The old one is here , but I don’t recommend it due to its flimsiness. The tow hook is just an aesthetic tow hook from amazon as well, it’s non functional.

u/atnawrot · 1 pointr/vandwellers

I machined some aluminum extensions that I bolted on to these roofrack feet so that I could clear the hightop. http://www.amazon.com/Highland-2006200-Black-Heavy-Carrier/dp/B0002MABL4/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1464196496&sr=1-3&keywords=van+roof+rack

Then used conduit tubing for the rest of the frame work. I happened across some really wonderful tubing connector pieces a few years ago that I held on to because I knew they would come in handy at some point and they helped out big time form mounting the crossbeams.

Used angle beams for nesting the solar panels.

I can answer this one! I have this rack on my Impreza. It's the Tyger rack, and I got mine on Amazon. It's a great rack. I loved the fact that it's pretty deep, but not as stylistically bland as the Yakima rack.

Edit: This one

u/FRDV · 2 pointsr/subaru

Thank you! It's a rola basket with the extension to make it a lil bigger and a yitamotor 34 inch curved Led bar. The curve of the bar matches the curve of the basket almost perfectly. I wrapped the basket where it attaches together with FiberFix just for some extra strength and also the back half of the basket is suspended over the roof without support from a cross bar so it needed the reinforcement.

Hitch basket, roof basket, roof crossbars, waterproof hitch basket bag, waterproof roof basket bag. Roof and hitch baskets are Curt, waterproof bag for the hitch basket is Curt, waterproof bag for the roof basket is Rocket Straps and roof rails are Brightlines. Got everything for less than the cost of the Thule roof basket I originally wanted and one Thule Aeroblade crossbar. Very happy with all of the purchases so far! I did a lot of looking before I bought and after what I saw I decided I didn't want to spend a ton because I really don't need rack that can support a roof top tent and I dont want to start hacking factory parts off my new truck. So I found this very inexpensive happy alternative.

Here is the link to Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013COCXDC/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It requires a bit of assembly and I added a few steps to ensure that for the most part its water/rust resistant, adhesive silicone to fill jointed pieces and lock tight for assembly screws. Added some flat black anti rust paint at places where it needed.

The mounting to my 5th gen took a bit of re-engineering. The brackets needed to be inverted to work with the stock cross bars. Once I did that it held very well and I can shake the whole truck by grabbing the rack.

The max weight limit is 250 lbs but I doubt I'll ever need that for my camping gear.

All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and its 200 less than the cheapest high end one piece universal rack.

Thank you :) The rack is this one by Subaru, I'm not sure on the crossbars but they look exactly like these.

It's a HUGE rack and half the price of Thule or Yakima. Highly recommend. I believe you'll need to purchase the crossbars for it though.

u/Xerous · 2 pointsr/JeepRenegade

I went with a very similar setup and just installed the cargo basket today! I got some decent but cheaper knockoffs of a very similar crossbar (a bit lower profile) on ebay. I had to hit em with some plastidip to black em out. ebay link

and the same rack but just another brand and a bit cheaper: amazon link

I agree the combo of low profile bars and that style basket is a great look on a Rene.

It's called Smittybilt Overlander Tent, we got it second hand from someone. It does not come with the roof rack, I bought the rack on Amazon. Its recommended that you dont have it on the stock roof rack that's built on the jeep. Tent and Roof Rack we did have to trim the roof rack down for the tent.

You can find it with free shipping. Better ground clearance than the harbor freight version and way more adjust ability. You can use it with SUV's or ladder racks too. Maybe not as much clearance as the T-bone but I haven't hit the ground with it. It's solid too. It will rust through when my Hitch rusts through.

Here's another game-changer, a soft-sided rooftop cargo carrier. I got mine for about $39 "used", and as far as I can tell it wasn't actually used, just repackaged. Thanks. Steel plate is a good idea. I have this roof rack basket: https://smile.amazon.com/ARKSEN-Universal-Extension-Luggage-Carrier/dp/B013COCXDC/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=roof+rack&qid=1554443981&s=gateway&sr=8-8

It's not the best but it's pretty solid. I accidentally ran into a concrete ceiling in an underground parking structure due to lower clearance than I thought and the roof rack basket was untouched.

But it's got those skinny little bars instead of big fat one. If it was a big bar/pole, I could have used ubolts. With these skinny ones.. maybe I can use a steel plate. I can use two bolts around 2 of the skinny bars and sandwich it with a steel plate from below.

Hello,

I had a blazer. Frist thing I did was put Thule cross bars on the factory bar. There was way too much play in the factory cross bars...so I ditched them.

Second. Look into a ladder rack. like this one. With that you can slide the boats back a bit and still have solid connection to the truck.

Could be an option. You can have a hitch installed for about $200-300 I think. One option instead of a trailer could be a hitch cargo carrier. If it works that would solve the issue for well under $500.

I've actually taken mine on two (going to be 3 within a few months) cross country road trips from Ohio to California. Have a torklift ecohitch installed which is a no-weld solution that bolts to the existing muffler mounting holes in the frame. Combined it with CURT's cargo carrier. Haven't had any issues yet. basket itself is about 70lbs and we usually have a couple pieces of luggage strapped down in it (Stuff that we don't need until we get to our destination. Mostly clothes;). I believe at last check Torklift rates the hitch at a max 200lb tongue weight with our vehicles. I might at some point swap out for a lighter basket though.

u/TPrimeTommy · 2 pointsr/JeepRenegade

I have these bars on my Trailhawk (along with bike racks) and I have no complaints. I do get some wind noise at highway speeds, but I'm not sure if that's from the bike racks or the crossbars.

Installation was straightforward for just the crossbars, maybe 20 minutes, basic hand tools, and a step ladder.

u/UnderlyVerbose · 1 pointr/GrandCherokee

I got my Rola for less than $200. It's the one you see in the banner pic.

I started with just the standard basket
Later I added the extension

This is just about the cheapest option for a decent roof rack. Other than some minor rust (Mind you I'm in AZ, so rust isn't much of an issue for me) the rack has been great. The weak link in the setup is actually the factory crossbars. They both collapsed on mine under the weight just my spare and HiLift. So that's something to keep in mind.

I bought this one and it worked great for hauling the grandfather of the Helix, my Elite 250, when we went camping with my camper shell on the truck. The instructions were kind of shitty, a basic knowledge of how to use nuts and washers helps a lot because they basically just give you the parts and say go at it. Rola makes a decent one that won't break the bank. I ran one until I could do a "better" rack that really wasn't any better. It comes disassembled and you have to put together. The only thing you'll want to do is seal the joints with silicone as you assemble, keeps it from getting water inside.

Most frames will accommodate a commonly available cargo bar to hold plywood inside of the frame. This is just a quick example I found but these are used in semi trailers all the time and you can get ones specced where the failure limit would likely be beyond the surrounding structure itself. It's more expensive than drilling but they can be re-used, and are handy for many other things. It might even be possible to install inside of windows mark-free with rags on the contact pads. Usually if it isn't a structural modification, and it does not damage the property, they cannot do anything about it. It also makes it very clear it was the landlord being an asshat that led to his windows being broken, not anything LAOP did.
