Backpack/Bag advice? (mainly travel [airbnbs, hostels, couch surfing etc...], but knowing me I might end up in some "wilderness" moments at times such as long hikes and adventures.

So I have ordered this backpack and plan on using it for all my gear (cameras/lenses/laptop/gopros/batteries/etc...) and am currently looking for a 2nd bag that will house all my clothes/toiletries/etc... The biggest goal I want to accomplish with this bag is that i never want to have to check a bag. I currently have a small roller bag that is 20in x 13in x 7in similar to this but I'm not a fan of it. Ive been looking into this one as I feel packing it would be the easiest for most efficient packing but not 100% that it will be okay on all flights as a carry on along with my backpack being the personal item. One thing also to keep in mind with my 2nd bag is to fit my tripod as it wont fit into my backpack.

When it comes to packing: Ive read into several different styles from Rolling clothes, Vacuum Bags, to packing cubes. Ive seen pros and cons to all of them. Ive heard from long term travel to not use cubes because they take up space that can always be used for something else. The downfall to vacuum bags is that people say the lose air, also how to remove the air the best. I have looked at ones with pumps that plug into USB ports for power and ones with the hand pumps to remove air.

PS. Ive see some checklists of things to pack X amount of shirts/ pants/ shorts/etc... and was wondering if anyone has some lists as well i can look at to compare them all and figure out what would be best for me and give me a rough idea of what i can and cant bring.

I'm sure ill have more and more questions as time goes on while I get ready and prepare for my trip around the world in a few months (if everything goes as planned).

THANKS!

u/TheBeneGesseritWitch · 1 pointr/navy

I bought a really nice bi-fold hard garment bag, like this one. The one I have had a hangar in it so that you could hang up the whole pack....The little zippers and pockets are perfect for storing dress shoes and ribbons/medals/belts/covers/neckerchief/neckertab/undershirts and dress socks.

Downside is it isn't a collapsible one so not ideal for shipboard/deployment use, but it's perfect for any flights that require me to bring my dress uniform(s). So far it's survived two PSCes, a trek to c-school, and two trips to weddings. It keeps all my uniforms stored neatly in my closet when not in use, too.

Don't ask r/buyitforlife unless you're prepared to be redirected to Tumi (which runs like, $700+ for a piece of luggage) or Saddleback, which is assuredly not for those of us with enlisted paychecks! (but I wish I had more disposable income because I want a lot of their products...).

A low-end alternative would be to buy one of the clear plastic over-the-door-shoe-holder and put your random uniform items in that. Of course, it's not really easily transportable, should you need to fly somewhere with your stuff when you PCS you'll probably have to ziplock everything before throwing it in your suitcase.

It is uncommon for freshmen to obtain good internships, but you can't get them if you don't try.

/r/malefashionadvice is a fine resource.

Your bare minimum includes: (I assume you are male)

Leather shoes, preferably dressy.
Casual pants (Dockers, Duck Heads)
Leather belt that compliments or matches shoes.
Dress shirt - long sleeve, with button down collar.

Basically this overall look:

example1 example2

That's your bare absolute minimum.

Depending on your shirt selection, you can add a tie to step things up a notch. Recommended if you are dealing with serious employers.

Your next step up is to add a blazer to achieve this basic look:

example3 example4

Your last logical / typical / common step up is the basic suit, which is pretty similar to the blazer look, just more coordinated and less casual.

example5 example6

If you are going to buy a suit, I encourage you to go to a proper suit store.
Men's Warehouse, Joseph A Bank or something similar.

Get something in the $200 to $400 range -- And pay extra to have it tailored or fitted to you.
An off the rack suit can look baggy when they don't fit you well. This can damage your overall appearance.

Pay attention to the tailors & sales people. Think about color combinations so you can mix and match items for maximum re-use.

Dry-Clean the suit. If you are good with an iron, you don't have to dry-clean the dress shirts, but I recommend that you do so anyway. Dry-clean neckties only if you get them actually dirty.

DONT go cheap on the shoes. Spend $100 not $35 if you can. It really does impact the overall look.

You don't need to buy it from the suit-people, they might include one for free, but I very strongly encourage you to invest in a proper garment bag, kind of like this: garment bag and keep your suit(s) in the bag at all times.

That will keep it fresh, unfaded from the sun because you left it in a pile next to the window for a week, and free from animal hair, laundry stink and anything else negative we can think of.

u/Billy_Brubaker · 2 pointsr/AskMen

They make suit bags similar to the one that came with the suit, but generally meant to last a little longer and a big wider so you can fit the shirt and tie in there too.

Cheap $10 version

Amazing $285 Filson version - Filson makes some amazing bags, this thing would last a lifetime and look good.

Or just wear it, those are your two best options. Don't carry it around without a cover since that's how you'll end up wrinkling it or staining it.

u/ravensrule123 · 1 pointr/medicalschool

I've noticed lots of wrinkled suits on the trail. I just got this bag to help out with that and also to make carrying a suit easier. I like this one cause it has space for shoes too.

If there's gonna be a lot of driving, a good back pillow has been super clutch.

u/taxiecabbie · 9 pointsr/weddingplanning

Contact the airlines.

Some airlines actually have a closet in first class that they will use to store your dress while you're traveling. You don't have to be in first class to use the closet (y'know, getting married tends to make people be nicer to you than they might normally be) but not all airlines offer this service so it would be best to call around and find out what airlines will offer this and book with them if at all possible.

If you have already booked, call your airlines and ask if they have this.

Keep in mind that if you bring the dress into the cabin it will count as a carry-on, though. With most airlines (the non-budget ones) you get one carry-on and one "personal item." Assuming that you and your fiancé are traveling together, that means you'll only get one actual carry-on if the other one is your dress.

I would travel with it in a garment bag to protect it. Maybe something like this since it has room for a full skirt.

If you don't have access to a closet, you'll just have to treat it like a regular carry-on item... that is, putting it in the storage above the seat or under your seat. You MAY get some sort of exception for putting it in your lap because it's technically an item of clothing, but probably not if there's a chance that it would impede exit during an emergency (and if it's a giant dress it probably would).

u/exfratman · 41 pointsr/malefashionadvice

As a side note: I'd also say that maintenance is important:

u/Frauleime · 4 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

> How big can my bag be with out needing to be checked?

Your airline will have all of this information listed. Typically the carryon height is 21.5-22" depending on the carrier.

If you're traveling with an actual suit and you don't want wrinkles, I'd recommend getting a bag like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FD5MLVB/ which is basically a garment bag that unzips. For the rest of your clothes, utilize packing cubes to be more organized and space efficient. A carryon is plenty big enough for four days, you just have to be organized.

You can also take a personal bag, which usually measures a max of 18x14x8; if you really want maximize space, you can get a cheap bag with those exact dimensions.

Just wear your coat and heaviest shoes with you on the plane, it's more comfortable than lugging them in a bag. Depending on how crisp your clothes need to be, you might want to get a travel steamer too.

u/ali13a13a · 1 pointr/minimalism

I heard great things about this particular bag:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F6BGPGC/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07F6BGPGC&pd_rd_w=4nlpQ&pf_rd_p=80559f3c-f83b-49c1-8a72-40f936e9df7a&pd_rd_wg=LTyOZ&pf_rd_r=5P1KQ2B69C81RJDKWN1S&pd_rd_r=bdf52798-5a29-11e9-8ded-c79105bf1765

I haven't used it thou. But being able to start off flat and have the bag wrap around your clothes seems really cool. Kinda like the section where you can put a suit as well!

u/p-aeruginosa · 8 pointsr/medicalschool

Good idea to invest in a suitcase such as (Samsonite Aspire Xlite Wheeled Garment Bag, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D3QNMWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kIIhAbXVCGM9Y)

Made specifically for traveling with suits. This plus a hand steamer such as (PurSteam Fabric Steamer, Fast-Heat Aluminum Heating Element With Travel Pouch, 180ml Capacity Perfect for Home and Travel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MG2OOHK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_BKIhAb35ZT7XY). You won’t regret it. Trust me

u/pamface89 · 1 pointr/weddingplanning

I used this garment bag from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D4CXVXM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.PeyDbCS5FPXR

We were able to fit my dress and my husband's tux in it (with plenty of room to spare) and carry it on the plane. The flight attendants said they didn't have closet to hang it in, but we just laid it on top of the bags in the overhead bin. Worked perfectly.

u/felixthegirl · 9 pointsr/medicalschool

I used this last year. There are other very similar ones as well. This bag was nice because it had pockets for shoes and the inner compartment was pretty big. I could fit 2 suits and a dress for the preinterview dinner in the garment part. The suits also held up, I didn’t have to iron or steam much in the hotel.

u/Gettincrunkletoned · 4 pointsr/weddingplanning

I travel next week but I plan on using a Wally Bag. I have heard great things and there was actually a discussion about this just a few days ago where it was recommended there too!

u/Pooker__ · 2 pointsr/premed

This bag works quite well and sounds like what you're looking for. Can be folded to easily be carried or you can hang it upright as well.

u/zozelly · 2 pointsr/weddingplanning

This is the one I got. It’s a bit pricey, but I figured it was worth investing in something good quality (and I was very impressed with the quality of it when it arrived). And my full length dress didn’t have any problems fitting in it.

Garment Bag

u/E466069 · 3 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

yeah, they work and if you want a more rugged bag you can find better ones out there and even better ones but more expensive as well.

This could be your carry on as it should have enough space.

Like I said, the biggest issue will be folding it right before you leave to go to the airport and pulling it all out as soon as you get to the hotel.

u/ninepaw · 2 pointsr/weddingplanning

I'm looking at ordering this bag on Amazon for transporting my dress from North Dakota to California. Seems like most of the reviews are from brides transporting their dresses, and they're mostly positive!

u/sdreamer07 · 2 pointsr/onebag

Saw a video review on this bag (Modoker Convertible Garment Bag). Looked pretty awesome, but no experience with it. The only reservations I have is I believe it isn't YKK zipper, but it's pretty affordable.

u/AnonyMissMe · 1 pointr/weddingplanning

I bought a fun one on Amazon and it works wonders since it has a larger bottom, and is colored so it hides the dress well from FH: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR88BWJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/blueandbrownolives · 8 pointsr/weddingplanning

I’d look into something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Tri-fold-Garment-Premium-Breathable-Tear-resistant/dp/B07N7KY1Q8

Double check your airline requirements for carryon in size before you buy something.

If they try to make you check it, tell them you want to gate check. That way it doesn’t actually go through their system. They will take it from you when you are getting on the plane and hand it back to you when you are getting off.

should just look like a heavy piece of luggage that you put with the rest of your cloths when you move.

u/Nomaddening · 5 pointsr/weddingplanning

My bridal consultant recommended this one. She said the tailor will be able to pack the bag correctly, and it’s easy to carry on. Especially if you tell the flight attendants that it’s your wedding gown.

Looking to buy a travel garment bag for my suit and maybe shoes for some interviews. Anyone have any experience with this bag or something similar to it they can recommend?

came here to suggest this. My dad always traveled with one (and we put my suits in there when traveling together). Totally worth the investment if you're doing a lot of traveling.

u/djd02007 · 7 pointsr/medicalschool

Two things I've heard are you can get a suitcase that can double as a suit bag (something like this), or alternately sometimes can call the airline ahead of time to let them know you're bringing this on so they know. However I have not had success with the latter strategy in my small sample size so I'm going to try for the former and just get a suitcase that I can store the suit in

u/Brown_Sandals · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

I am currently looking for a good travel garment bag. I like the design of something like this, but not 100% sold on the reviews as it looks kind of cheap. Looking to spend no more than $150-200... Any recommendations?

If not, I would steam them in the shower when I get there of see if you want to invest in a handheld steamer(or learn how to iron). You can youtube some folding techniques, but those shirts are gonna get messed up regardless.
