For starters it may be worth picking up one of these steel ledger seed kits. That's a pretty solid option to have since you could combine that with your fire safe or safety deposit box plan to add an extra layer of protection.

The main things to consider (imo at least) are:

  1. What are the odds that somebody gains access to this without your permission

  2. Is this spot viable long term, for example if you ended up in a coma 5 years would you be able to come back for it? Would it be safely hidden all that time? Is there a high probability the backup gets destroyed in that time?

  3. If somebody was looking is this somewhere they'd look?

A deposit box pretty comfortably checks those 3 boxes (provided you're able to pay years in advance on it) and there's a pretty insignificant chance of that ever being compromised unless you're a serious criminal or something then of course the authorities would access it and take the contents I'm sure.

A safe of any kind in your residence would protect it in certain scenarios but if your house was robbed or something of that nature that's exactly where they'd be most interested in looking.

I won't give any specific examples of what I've personally done but hopefully this helps you with your approach to it. The best methods will probably be something you cook up on your own, tailored to your own circumstances, rather than something posted online for the world to see.

We bought a simple fire box a few years ago because it seemed like the adult thing to do and it's been great. It's only for the most important, hard to get, or irreplaceable things like birth certificates, social security cards, and passports. We may never need it but it's nice to have things safe and easy to find given the cost.

We didn't need something huge so we just keep it on a closet shelf and it's fairly similar to this one.

I live on in a shared house and I keep mine on a shelf, but it would be catastrophic to my life if someone read them. So, firstly, can you control who has access to them? I never let anyone into my room without me there as well, so I'm always sure that they're not being read. Another thing was that I said, quite plainly, that if anyone from my family read them, then they would never be allowed back into my home again. That tends to get the message across, even if it is a little harsh.

If you can't control who can go into your home, like if you still live with your parents, then my first suggestion is a lockbox or money box. You can get them pretty cheap, like this one. You might need to buy more than one, and check the sizes, but they're strong, hard to break into, and come with a key that you can either keep on you or hide. Again, maybe not an option if you have controlling parents that would demand the key, but no one will read them without your knowledge.

At the more extreme end, you can learn/create a shorthand that means no one but you will be able to read it. Here's one resource that might help. The chances of anyone being able to read it or even recognise it for what it is is pretty low, so it's a safe way if you spend the time to learn it.

If I had that set up, it would be "Wake and Break" lol Actually, I kind of do have that setup, is that an ELeaf? I use the hydro tube, it seems if you had 3-4 more drops of water in there, it would tip over... lol PS I got a nice Black combo lock box on amazon that is a better way to keep it and to travel (sandwich it with foam). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MX6V8QG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Time for my answers - my mischief managed is down the page but I didn't know if you would see an edited answer.

  1. A goblet. In the HP world, the word goblet is synonymous with fire, so I link to you a firelighter

  2. A Broom is something that you would ride while playing Quidditch and every Quidditch player needs a team shirt

  3. Hat is something that ryhmes with bat.

  4. Books are awesome. I have a whole list of Kindle books but also this sneaky wee bugger right here.

  5. Trunk. Heh.

  6. A cape is something you would THROW around your shoulders. OH YES!

I'm heading to college in the fall as well. I picked up one of these and it just came in today. It has room to store my 2 zippos, a few bics, grinder, papers, eye drops, and my 1/2oz. If you take the coin insert out, the space pretty much doubles and you could hold a pipe/small bong/water pipe in it. When locked up, I can't smell my stash. I'd take extra precaution (mines quad bagged, and has dryer sheets) against the smell, but it seems pretty good. It's small enough where you can store it without notice.

$13.95. A 4 number would be better because the aunt would probably have the time and determination to get the 3 number eventually. But OP could just change it pretty frequently.

u/GhostedAccount · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Wow, that thing is so cheap and stupid. It will only work if the roommate is not determined. He could just break it open, try all the combos, or position the pills near a gap and get them out.

You should have gotten a small safe or lock box like this http://www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-CB10-Small-Cash-Black/dp/B000Z8W7I0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319491097&sr=8-2

I'm thinking something like this (Aluminium Credit Card Holder Aluminum / Security Wallet) in my pocket, with something like this (Cash Box 4" Cylinder Lock) in my bag.

u/eruista · 3 pointsr/3DS

I think I got mine at Costco, but they can be found in office supply stores with the filing cabinets or on amazon. Mine's small enough that it can fit under a bed. I don't have one with a padlock, it uses a round key. I think most are like this. Here is a link to one similar to mine: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00KOO594O/ref=psdc_705336011_t1_B00GE586CY

To tack onto this it might be wise to keep all meds in a locking medicine cabinet that only you and your DH have the keys to. Not only will that prevent any accidents with your LO, /u/whtbrd, but it will also keep any guests- wanted or unwanted- from shopping around in your medicine cabinet [that way they can't steal any or tamper with any]. If anyone other than you or DH need something out of the cabinet either you or DH will go get it for them.

Poke around on amazon for a bit. It doesn't have to be something like this either, it could be something more like this, this, or even this or this as long as it locks well enough to keep unwanted people out. It doesn't need to be fancy. Don't even bring up the fact your worried that she might tamper with your meds to your DH, just tell him that your locking all the medications in the house- including yours- up so LO can't get to them and show him where the key is going to be kept.

u/av1cenna · 2 pointsr/analog

It doesn't have to be huge, or expensive. Here's a fire-resistant lockbox on Amazon for $20. There's a bigger version on that same page for $30.

If you want off-site storage, call some local banks and ask what their lowest rate is for a safe deposit box and how big the box is. Most are around 3x5x12", enough to pack a lot of negatives in. You can sometimes find smaller banks that will rent them for $40-50/yr, but pricing varies a lot. You can sometimes negotiate a lower rate if you pay multiple years in advance. Just make sure to pay the annual fee, or they'll seize the contents, obviously.

You can back up your scans for free on Google Drive or Dropbox, up to a certain storage limit.

u/MasterBuilderBater · 3 pointsr/gadgets

I think a Belkin WeMo inside of a lock box is going to be the best solution.

The lock box could have holes drilled at the top (just under where the lid would overlap when it closes) for the cable to run in and out.

u/learnyouahaskell · 1 pointr/videos

You know what kind of thing I am talking about. That's a handy descriptor of the type.

https://www.amazon.com/Jssmst-Large-Cash-Combination-Lock/dp/B0776PLQNL

Even if they have "exposed hinges", it matters more how sturdy and accessible they are, esp. their strength in relation to the securing lock (or cable). A pair like these will make short work of the cable in the OP, for example.

I use Square on the iPad with the Square stand. You won't beat the credit card processing fee of 2.75%. I also use Fresh KDS to display the orders onto another tablet. I can't speak highly enough about Fresh KDS, it cost me $10 a month but is 100% worth it to display orders.

I don't know what sort of amount or strange shapes you may have in your posession, but here's a $20 lockbox that should do the trick (assuming you don't need a trunk):

If you cable lock it then they just possess it with a cable lock in it.

I will be grabbing a cheapo lock box like what you use at a bake sale and bolting it to the floor of the safe. That one isn't quite big enough for a lower with a stock, though. I'm not really worried about that constructive possession crap but it's $15 and easy enough to do.

u/ElectronicWanderlust · 29 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

If she's that nosy, chances are she'll find whatever you try to hide. So I'd recommend that you put it in something that she might find but can't get into: a lockbox. I'd recommend one with a combo over one with just a key (because if she can find the box, she can probably find the key too). They don't have to be expensive, you just have to remember to LOCK it after you put money in it.

That one may be out of OP's price range. Is so, there are cheaper ones with keys. I bought one like this from The Reject Shop (Aus equivalent of Poundland or similar cheapo stores) for about $10 as I had issues with someone taking my opiate medication.

If you think your mum might know all your hiding places, you can buy socks or underpants with zips to stash your cash & cards when you're asleep or out of the house.

It sucks that OP's mum is a thief. I mean it, OP. Hit me up for a free Steam game from my Inventory. It might not be Overwatch, but it might help.

u/Gordonuts · 8 pointsr/mtgfinance

I store my cards in one of these, double sleeved in deck boxes, with some silica packets in the safe. You can store ~1000 cards in each one.

Edit: I bought mine at Target for closer to $30. I suspect the higher price on Amazon is to offset the cost of shipping.

u/IsThereCheese · 1 pointr/Bitcoin

I like the idea of a passphrase that I can back up in metal, ie:
https://www.amazon.com/Cryptocurrency-Indestructible-compatible-KeepKey-hardware/dp/B07F2ZMTD2/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?keywords=metal+bitcoin+wallet&qid=1564245226&s=gateway&sr=8-7

I guess my main hangups are A) the private key not being completely in my control, and B) if recovery or access is at all limited by A.

You have a hw wallet I take it? Which one and what are your likes/dislikes?

Edit: I meant seed phrase, not pass phrase

u/ThatPwn · 1 pointr/steroids

Would this be suitable enough for a gear box or should I look for something bigger?

I need to keep everything hidden, so this would store all the vials/pills/needles/etc.

Just grab a cheap locking box to store your goodies in and stash the vape when you're not using it. When you are, it should be in your hands.

One thing that we registered for was a fireproof lockbox! I saw it mentioned on here once before, it’s not an exciting gift, but it’s very practical for all our important documents/passports/etc!
