I totally agree with TheCatGuardian's post. We just adopted our first cat from a shelter and he is 8 months old, and honestly he's still a bit of a handful at times (but that should be expected with any new pet). Try to get one over a year, if not closer to 2 years, as ours is still learning how to play nice and not nipping our ankles to get attention. My husband has always had cats, but this was my first pet and we adopted because I've always wanted one. I did a ton of research and here's what I would suggest as far as supplies:

A high sided litter box with rim - to keep them from kicking litter around and the high walls help keep everything inside. I didn't waste the money on litter liners. They seem gimmicky to me.

Pooper Scooper - It's cheap and gets the job done. Nothing else needs to be said about it.

Stainless Steel Bowl(s) - This one gets good reviews and is the perfect size for their food. You can get two, one for wet and one for dry food. Though I got this one for dry and got a cute oval dish at walmart for ~$2 for his wet. Whatever you want.

Slightly larger bowl for water - Make sure they have plenty for fresh water. I give him new water in the AM and evening after work. I know a lot of people rave about water fountains...but honestly I didn't want to spend the money initially, and my kitty seems to be perfectly fine drinking from the bowl. It'd be worth it to see how your cat feels about the bowl...esp since they will be drinking from bowls at the shelter...they shouldn't be too picky. You can spoil them later on if you decide to, but definitely not necessary.

A safety collar - Make sure it is either a break-away or elastic to ensure the cat doesn't get strangled if it climbs and gets stuck on something and is hanging by its neck. I liked this one because it didn't have an annoying bell, though some like the bell to let you find your cat in the house. The collar also ensure that if the cat gets out anyone who finds him will know he belongs to someone and isn't just a feral cat that they can take for themselves.

Scratching Board - Simple and good reviews. Seems like it will last. You can also get one or two cardboard cheaper ones and see what they prefer to scratch on. My cat doesn't really scratch that much...he uses the scratching posts that are part of his cat tree.

Cat Perch - This is the one we got so he can look out the window. It seems like a good balance of expense and functionality...especially at first. The cat might not even like jumping up on things, so at least this is a safe buy since it's not that tall but still lets them get up off the floor.

Cat bed - This one is highly reviewed and really durable. It's machine washable and will last forever. I really love this bed.

Simple toys at first: Wand Toy, Jingle Balls, Ball Circle Thing, Little Catnip Critter. He also likes paper bags, toilet paper rolls, and his laser pointer. I highly recommend the laser pointer...ours is green.

Greenies Treats

As far as food, you want to ask what they feed at the shelter and get a bag of that at first even if you read online that it isn't "the best." We wanted to get our cat on a mainly wet food diet, so we left his shelter dry food out at night, and gave him half a can of wet food in the morning before work, and half a can at night beofre bed ~9PM, and took the dry food away while the wet food was out. We feed him Friskies Pate...it's actually pretty good for the price. People will get passionate about cat food. Honestly Friskies is fine for us now...they sell it in bulk at Sam's.

Litter - you want to use the kind they use at the shelter so they have comfort in that. You can switch later if you want.

You might also want to get nail clippers and a brush. Our cat is long haired and I like using a comb, but it's really up to you.

As far as gimmicks I would assume that if it seems like a luxury it probably isn't necessary. Cats are very happy with simple things. The vitals are what I listed...a bathroom, food and water (bowls), a few toys, somewhere to scratch, somewhere to get up off the floor, and a safety collar. The bed isn't absolutely vital, but it's nice for them to have somewhere that they feel secure and happy...even if they don't use it at first.

Luckily I just typed this out for someone in another thread! I have a strategy that has worked 3 times before. I had 2 cats already, acclimated a 3rd permanent and have since acclimated 2 fosters (one was here for 9 months, the other 5):

  1. Choose a bedroom that will be the 3 year old's (preferably the one you sleep in). This bedroom will be closed at all times, the 3 year old will be restricted to this bedroom at all times and the other cat is not allowed in. This is now the 3 year old's territory. As she spreads her scent around she will grow more confident (which is a necessity if you want her to get along with another cat). This room should obviously have its own litter box and food/water bowls.

  2. Put the 2 cats on the same feeding schedule. Do not change either diet at this time, continue feeding them the same food(s) they're used to. Feed both cats on either side of the door as much as you can. Food is a positive interaction, this is to start building positive associations with each other now that they each have a space of their own.

  3. After at least one week has passed (please don't bother trying to rush the cats, just let time do its thing) put up a pet gate. I have this one that's $10 at Walmart. Yes, the cats can jump over it but they typically won't because they both know the other side is another cat's space. And if they do jump over you should be immediately putting them back on their own side. The gate should be up 24/7, when you are home. If you leave for any reason take the gate down and close the door. Continue feeding them next to the doorway, the gate now allows them to see each other when they eat instead of just smelling. If you have treats you can also hand them out by the gate for another positive interaction.

  4. After another week has gone by you can test the waters by taking down the gate. Only under constant supervision, of course. One of the cats will probably start exploring the other space while the other watches. If there is any negative behavior be sure not to punish the cats. They will associate any negative behavior from you with the other cat. Positive talking and petting only. If things go well, great! You should still separate them into the appropriate rooms when you're not there until another week goes by without issue. Continue feeding them in the same place, remember no changes during this process. You want the 3 year old to still have her complete "safety room" whenever she wants. At night separate the cats as well into the appropriate rooms (3 year old = bedroom, other cat = rest of the apartment). If there were any negative behaviors beyond a little hissing, put the gate back up and just continue #3. Some cats take longer, some shorter. Doing this 3 times I know exactly how long it takes for my cats to warm-up to other cats, 2 of them just a week but the 3rd is very defensive and needs the full 3 weeks before she's on "speaking terms" with a new cat.

Cats are very particular about their space and other cats entrenching on it. Cats going into new environments also need to build up their confidence by having a space of their own. Both cats will be very defensive at first because of this which is why such slow introductions are necessary.

My 3rd permanent cat was adopted from a shelter at 2 years old, she spent her entire life there from when she was just 6 weeks. She is still fearful and skittish but getting better every day. Under the bed was her safety zone for the entire first 2 weeks. I just gave her the time she needed and all the affection I could. She eventually outgrew the "safety room" and now her favorite place is in the living room. The best tips I can probably give you for a skittish cat is to make sure they have access to everything in a comfortable space for them. Right now, it's the bedroom for your 3 year old. After this process is over she may pick a different place like what my cat did. It's a great idea to make sure she has a litter box and food/water nearby. My cat also has her own bed in the corner, she's the only one that likes beds so I think it has to do with feeling protected (it has sides like this one, I'm upgrading it so it has a roof too like this one.

I hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask!

  1. Something Grey. Manatees love tea too.

  2. Something reminiscent of rain. I have have a 6 hour thunderstorm on my iPod that I listen too almost every night to help me relax and go to sleep. But, my pillow finally gave up the ghost, so I use ear buds...not as comfy.

  3. Food related, yet unusual. May seem tame to most, but my brain can't wrap around how these will/would taste.

  4. On my list for someone else. Slightly NSFW! For my wife who has sensitive...well, you'll understand when you look at the link. She needs this stuff to be more comfortable. I only have to look at them funny and it's too much for her.

  5. A book you should read. The Red Tent, is a book based on the fictional life of Dinah from the old Testament. She is is mentioned only once I think in the bible, but the author of this book weaves a life story based on how women where treated and lived back then. Dinah lives in a harsh world but learns from the women around her and see the workings of this mysterious entity called God in her world. It is a wonderful read and having to tell you about it reminded me I want it again to reread. Really a great book.

  6. Item that is less than a dollar. This awesome awesome fantastic song!

  7. Something for my kitty Cassie May. I've always wanted one of these for my kitty and this was the perfect opportunity to finally add it to my WL.

  8. Something that is not useful, but so beautiful I must have it. Isn't it a beautiful ring?

  9. A movie everyone should watch once in their life. Because it is so imaginative and awesomely made with the puppets and sets. And David Freaking Bowie and his cod piece and hair are sexy yet so evil. ....you remind me of the babe

  10. Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Keep my shankin' knives sharp yo!

  11. Something that would have a profound impact on my life and help me to achieve my current goals. Currently I have no real space to do my painting and in a month and a half I'm moving and will have even less space to myself and my painting. This would enable me to paint at any table. For without being able to take a breather and paint, I can not be myself and have those moments to detach and relax so I can later go out and be the best adult I can be.

  12. Pesky add-on. To make your hair o'so happy.

  13. The most expensive thing on my list. My phone is currently my only camera. I've always dreamed of owning a "professional" camera to go take pictures of all the things!

  14. Something bigger than a bread box. Vroom Vroom

  15. Something smaller than a golf ball. Tee Tiny!

  16. Something that smells wonderful. Romance by Ralph Lauren. Has been my go to perfume since highschool.

  17. SFW Toy. She's evil but she's suitable for any setting!

  18. Something that would be helpful for going back to school. Everyone needs to look stylish and stay cool for school!

  19. Something related to my current obsession. I've become crazy about all things tea!

  20. Something SO AMAZING! BEHOLD the splendor It's adorable, handmade, and I have seriously become so enamored with it! Thought you might like to see it's awesomeness.

congratz !! :D

Our siberian favorite toy is this one
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B075SZCLZR/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

He absolutely LOVES it, he hides, he plays, he plots against us in there, the wrinkly sound make it super fun for him, and it's extremely robust couldn't find a single tear even with him putting is claw through it.

for a cat tree, it's better that you invest more money in a basic one, than paying for a cheap huge tree, siberian are BIG cats that LOVES to climb and jump and he will throw himself on it and you don't want an accident happening. Molyy and friends does amazing tree, we bought this one
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000OSIJA6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It think he would have love one that his higher than this one but they get pricier, He's spending 80% of his time on it. the top bunk is his bed, he love to run and jump through the loop, playing pick a boo in there, and it comes with the scratching post that is high enough for him to stretch plainly.

this brush is a must have, not a choice YOU NEED IT, Siberian need good brushing often to avoid painful matted fur, get him use to being brush EVERYWHERE very young (especially the butt, and under his "armpits")
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0040QS3PO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Best laser toy ever. you don't have to keep your finger on the button for it to work, it's super bright, and the cat will recognized the toy when he sees it before of it's bright color. we just need to say " Gaspachio wanna play ?" and show him the paws and he starts puring and getting ready to hunt. Make sure to train him to play with laser when he's young by rewarding it at the end of a session with a treat and making him stop on toy (so he has the feeling for catching something) after a few month he will have understand that the red dot CANNOT be catch, it's just fun to run after, and you won't have any mental issue with the cat.

This window bed is super strong, at first we though he didn't like it because we didn't saw him on it, then we realized he's always on it during the day when we're not home. And when we start pulling the curtain over it he starts going even more often since it's an "hidden place"

Absolutely NEVER feed you cat with crap cheap brand, if you can afford a 1k cat you can afford good food and treat for it. and brush his teeth regularly.

Also, plenty of soft hugs <3

u/melini · 6 pointsr/AskVet

Hey! Vet student/cat owner here. /u/ads215 has already answered a lot of your questions, but hopefully I can provide a bit more info on others!

Regarding vomiting: it's true that some cats vomit regularly (though usually not as much as 1-2x per week) BUT there could be an underlying cause, too. Is there always heaving with the vomiting? How digested is the food? It could be because of eating too fast (you can get dishes that help with that, or try something like this), or it could be a sign of disease.

My cat poops 1-2x per day. Again, your cat having a bowel movement only every few days might be normal for her, or it could be disease-related.

As for separation anxiety, it is seen much more often in dogs. Cats are really good at entertaining themselves. Like the other poster said, toys, windows, even little twist ties are great ways to keep your cat busy and active during the day. (Side note: to keep it fun, have "sets" of toys that you switch out periodically. Makes it seem like brand new toys every few weeks!)

I have a Sunny Seat for my cat in the window which he LOVES, he's either there or on top of his scratching post most of the time. Which leads me to another thing - do you have a scratching post for her? It's a behavioural need for cats to scratch, and if they don't have something appropriate to do it on, you can expect other things to get shredded.

Also, her breath - normal cat breath definitely exists, but it can also be a sign of dental disease.

Overall, most of my points go to the same conclusion: I think it would be of great benefit for both of you to visit a veterinarian for a wellness check. You can bring all of these issues forward to the vet, and they can check out the cat physically and figure out if they're normal or concerning. Not only that, but you can also talk to them about looking into pet insurance, which, in my experience with bengals, every owner should have. They tend to need a little extra veterinary care.

It was really awesome of you to take in this cat! I hope that she's with you for a long time, I can see that you're having fun with her!

u/wille0n · 1 pointr/pugs

Congrats! I just got a pug puppy myself a few weeks ago. Wanted to share my experiences I've had so far.

What kind of bed should we get for a pug? I'm thinking about getting this bed in the Medium size. Is this too big for the dog?

My pug tends to like plush things, he's always making his way into my clothes/towels. I got him this one since he loves hiding under my couch, and he loves it.

Is this crate a good fit for the pug? I'm planning to get the 24"x18"x19" size.

Crate training is a god send, especially when it comes to potty training. If you have the time, I would invest in doing that. I have the same exact crate and it works for him. The crate should only be big enough for him to stand and turn around, if he's a bit smaller (younger), you can use the divider so the crate will grow with your pug.

Any suggestions on a leash (retractable, fixed or both?)

My pug isn't old enough to go on walks yet, he hasn't had all his shots so I wouldn't be able to tell you. As a previous dog owner, fixed leash is best until he's learned proper walking manners and then you can invest in a retractable.

What kind of toys would a pug enjoy? I was told we needed a chewing one and a tugging one!

My pug's favorite toy is this one.

Any recommendations for food or treats?

Like what people earlier said, low-calorie treats are good since pugs tend to gain weights easily. When training, I would recommend freeze dried liver treats... my pug loves them!! Food wise, I feed my pug Taste of the Wild puppy formula... them or Blue Buffalo are great bets for your pug.

Good luck!!

I love love love my cats and I think they would love this sunny seat window cat bed thing. Ezra loves to sit in the sun and I bet he would just love it =)

Ok, so I realize that I am probably not going to win with this thinking, but I consider this little brat my baby! He would absolutely love love love this amazing contraption or this .:)) Thanks!

I LOVE MY BABY!

u/gingysnap · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I really want this cat bed off my house/pets wishlist! My cats don't currently have a cat bed, so I'm sure they would find it entertaining. AND LOOK AT IT, IT'S SO CUTE. (MRW) I have a super fat kitten that would look adorable being eaten by a shark hanging out in this cat bed. And it has free shipping and pretty good reviews, so that's cool!

Thanks for the contest opportunity :)

u/rileyfriley · 6 pointsr/pitbulls

Yeah! I like they Nylabone brand. Pit bulls are some of the strongest dogs out there, so don’t underestimate her. Nylabones are one of the only things that have survived in my home haha. I also really like the KONGs because I can put some treats and Natural Peanut Butter in them, and it entertains my pups for a while.
Get her used to you handling her food/toys now, as well. One way I’ve done this, is if I’m taking away a toy, I give them a treat. Good associations are so important. They see it as “okay, my toy is gone, but I got rewarded for letting her take it”.

I also recommend investing in a high quality bed/crate. I’ve bought dozens of cheapy beds and they just don’t compare to spending $80 once.

These are the ones my dogs seem to like the most :

PLS Pet Snugg Bolster Self-Warming Pet Bed (Blue, XX-Large, 39Wx45L), Dog Bed for Large Dogs, Completely Washable, Easy-Clean, Modern Design, Durable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A13YGEG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_x5tQBb4EAQW13

There’s sooo many choices, but my dogs have 5 beds and solely use these.
I also let my dogs sleep with me, but that’s a personal choice. Dog experts disagree on if that’s a good/bad thing.

I’m just throwing anything I can think of that might be helpful lol

Hello~ Thanks for doing this! My name is Briana. I see that you like sewing...I have just started sewing but I'm not too good at it. I am making a small stuffed dog - so far I have just the head. I also found two of my great-grandma's sewing machines (probably from the 40s-60s.) They are hidden in a little table, it's really cool - I've never seen one like that. One of them still works so I'm going to try using it soon.

This is my first Easter as a bunny owner! A year ago I couldn't tell you anything about rabbits, but now I'm obsessed. I adopted my rabbit for a rescue center (after being a foster failure.) Seeing so much rabbit things in stores is very painful because I cannot buy them all.

guess whos back, back again. Jess is back, tell a friend~

The item I would like most an item on my Amazon wishlist - bunny house. My rabbit currently has a fancy 3 story cardboard house, but has chewed up most of the walls on the first story. When she is on the second story, she tilts the entire house. Soon it will be all chewed up and I've been trying to find a good replacement for it - I want to get something that is not cardboard so it lasts longer. I thought that this house was really cute.

Thanks and happy Easter!

Hi,

If you are referring to this one I highly recommend!!
https://www.amazon.ca/Oster-Sunny-Seat-Window-Cat/dp/B005AUM8U0

My cat is 12 lbs. This thing holds up to 50lbs and is sturdy. Only thing was initially when he went on it he heard the velcro and got a little scared. The material moved a little but still stays in place. My cat loves it!! So great to add this to the window and easy assembly. It's also very reasonably priced. I added a little bit of catnip on it to entice him to rub against it to leave his scent.

Hope this helps! I was also skeptical so hope you enjoy it if you choose to purchase one.

I bet your kitty loves it!

Ahhh, thank youuu!

u/million_dollar_heist · 1 pointr/cats

Try getting one like this one, this one or this one

Using catnip or catnip oil will make it more attractive to her. I can't guarantee that she'll never scratch the furniture, but most cats prefer things like this that have a better texture for scratching.

Owning two cats is really in many ways easier than owning one. They become lower maintenance. Of course you have to spend slightly more time feeding, cleaning the litterbox, grooming etc, but the cats are happeir, better behaved, and much more pleasant to spend time with, which in my opinion is worth the small amount of extra effort.

An addendum (in thought) to /u/Spikekuji's post - a heated pet bed (here's an example of one on amazon; and here's an example of just a heated mat - you could put this anywhere) is awesome for when you aren't around during the day. I have two, and both of my sphynxes are big fans of them.

yes my friend I do. I hunted a LONG time to find one that I could disable the auto timer, but this is by far the nicest, most comfortable and most versatile heating pad I've ever had. And it's long

it's hard to explain without seeing it. it's not like other heating pads that have a cloth wrapped around a heating element, the cloth in this is part of the heating and the element is inside it. it's also machine washable, and you can use the stuff in the link below (also bought) for a heated moist therapy. the cord unplugs from the heating pad itself so it can be washed in a machine

this thing rocks. but there's one other option, a pressure activated pad that i had for my outside strays when I cared for them. it stays on as long as they're laying on it. it says it's for outdoors, and i used mine outside, but when I moved I brought it in and my inside cats sleep on it most of the day. it doesn't get hot, just warms enough to make them happy

here's one of my cats on the pressure activated pad

As an aside, semi-circular covered beds like this one are non-heated but great at A) playing into a cat's natural desire to huddle up in a hidey-hole, and B) seem to conserve heat really well.

When I reach in and pet my cat when he's in his shark, he's as warm as if he were lying in a sunbeam.

Ehm, I'm just thinking out loud here now, wouldn't it be amazing
if the programs that let you surf the world wide web would include
some feature to save links to pages you want to review later?
Like for this instance, the www.amazon.com part is quite easy.
but http://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Seat-Window-Cat-Bed/dp/B005AUM8U0 is not an easy string of characters to remember,

Like if it were a book, you have a strip of paper you put between the pages so you know where to open, only for the internet.
hmm, maybe a list feature where you can save internet addresses for easy access, we could call it pagesaves, pagemarks or maybe bookmarks!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember loosing my childhood dog who I'd had for since I was 3 and I was devastated. I'll be sending hopes of comfort your way and just remember you gave her an amazing life... seriously look at those pictures you posted. That dog is happy in every single one of them. You're an amazing puppy mommy and I know it's super tough it feels like a piece of you is gone and isn't coming back. But I always found comfort in knowing I loved that dog so much :) I hope you can find the same comfort in knowing that.

This is [Bella] (http://imgur.com/c2FkjRr) She's just so awesome. I swear she has a heart of gold! She was severely abused by her previous owners to the point where she breathes really heavy and snores loudly. (From having her ribs kicked in) She also has dental deterioration from only being fed table scraps. But after going through all of that all she ever wants to do is cuddle up in my lap or in my arms (of course only if I'm petting her.) But it's so worth it!!!

This is [Edward] (http://imgur.com/CT425GM) It was a mistake. Don't judge me lol. So he is so flipping sweet. I've had him for almost 3 years and he's still skittish but he's starting to come to me without me having to capture him. He was a breeding dog kept in really terrible conditions and it sucked. When I first got him and still had carpet if he got scared by me walking by or trying to catch him to take him out to the bathroom he would pee right where he was. I wish I had video taped it and compiled videos of him since I've had him to see how far he's come :) It's so freakin cool to see :)

[Edward is the only one who doesn't have his own bed right now] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G728ITK/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=26SWLD702LW5B&coliid=I2XLME4P5PV7ZP)

Since the kitten is most likely there because of the heat it generates, I recommend buying a heated cat bed. I just bought one for my short hair cat who is notorious for completely ignoring any cat bed I've bought her in the past. With this bed, it was instant love for her. I'm pretty sure she isn't going to set foot in my bed again. I have another cat who's a long hair who gets in it for a while, seems to get over heated, gets out and lays next to it for a while before getting back in again. They really love it.

u/Lcatg · 2 pointsr/CatsInSinks

This brokered the peace in my house (I ended up getting two). They have a larger one that I have too that the rival cats now occasionally share. It was hard to watch the one cat purposely steal the older cats fav spot. Now they have one. Good luck!

If you have the space, I recommend a cat tower with the sisal scratching posts. It'll function as a climbing playhouse for the kitten as well as a place to sleep. My cat also loves to sleep on these

For when the kitten is a little older, I think indoor cats should have collars too. The bell helps locate where the cat is and if the cat gets out of the house (knock on wood), people are more inclined to report cats with a collar because they'll know it's not a stray.

Glad you took your meds. I find a consistent dosing schedule really does help so I try to do mine with an alarm. Back when I was on BC pills I was religious about taking those on time, I kept them on my bedside table, lol.

My kitty is such a dork, he can't really do walks because he wants to eat all of the grass. If I let him he will eat himself sick. He got shut outside when we were bringing in groceries one night and I ran out about an hour later in a panic just KNOWING he would be gone or my a-hole neighbors dog would have hurt him, but no, he's eating grass ten feet from the door and purring.

I bought him a little contraption on Amazon this 'window mounted cat bed' and it helps him accept that he doesn't always get to go outside. It does come unstuck and dump him out sometimes, so I wouldn't set it up on a high window.

He loves our bed too. He's figured out that he can pull the corner of the fitted sheet off and lay directly on the gel mattress cover when he's hot.

I try to only open the doors if I have pants on, because my yard has 0 privacy (yay fences are expensive) and he bolts right for the garden beds that are like twenty five feet from the door. My neighbors front door is parallel to my back porch and he smokes outside a lot so it's kind of awkward anyway.

However I have gone out at one in the morning to loudly but fairly politely ask my other neighbors to quiet down because it was one in the fracking morning and their music was vibrating my brain. They were nice and turned it off and moved inside, proooobabbly because they thought I was a little crazy with my bed head skull pj pants. Oh well. :D

If you are thinking about an electric blanket, make sure it's approved by a nationally recognized testing agency, has a thermostat with adjustable heat settings, and has an internal temperature control to shut off the blanket if it gets too hot. I use an electric blanket on low heat sometimes when I am at home and my cats love it, but I don't feel comfortable leaving it on when I am not home. When I am not home, they have a heated kitty bed http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Kitty-Heated-Cat-16-Inch-Sage/dp/B00176F9AM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382927540&sr=8-1&keywords=heated+cat+bed a self-warming kitty bed http://www.amazon.com/Lounge-Sleeper-Self-warming-16-Inch-20-Inch/dp/B003YIIJGM/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1382928358&sr=8-8&keywords=heated+cat+bed and a polar fleece blanket I made by sewing thinsulate fabric between 2 layers of polar fleece. The polar fleece blanket is the favorite of 2 of my cats. While my other cat prefers the heated bed.

I got mine from Amazon (this one to be specific). It took several weeks to arrive (it came from China), but for $12 it was well worth the money. There's other sellers as well (I think one had prime shipping, but for $39 or so), though I don't know how good they are.

Sadly mine did not come with the little cushion that was supposed to be inside. I suppose it's okay since my cat likes the hard surface of a floor/carpet compared to a bed, but just something to keep in mind.

7 isn't really a senior as /u/antigoneelectra pointed out, but that's the age when some health ramifications from previous care start showing up. most owners neglect their cat's teeth and it really starts to become a problem when they're 4+ years old. another issue is UTIs (especially in males) which often pop-up again from a neglectful diet (or simply genetics). both are potentially expensive medical bills.
with that in mind, be financially prepared for a thorough vet check-up as well as a possible additional bill of a few hundred dollars.

don't find what i said discouraging, i think it's very responsible of you and also very insightful of you to get an older cat in your situation! i just wanted to give you a little heads-up on initial costs :)

anyway, adult cats love to lounge around so get them a window seat, a cat tree, a vertical scratching post (cats have muscles that need to be exercised vertically), and a regular scratching post.

consider a wet food diet too. either way, don't free feed as cats are prone to getting bored and grazing all day.

If you have a place for it, this is pretty awesome. I have one and it's so adorable to me when I see my kitty laying on it the sun. Had to take it down for the winter though because the only spot we could put it doesnt get much sun this time of year ^^;

I bought my guy a Sunny Seat. Actually got it from Bed, Bath, & Beyond for the same price. Works wonders in a loft apartment. haha

Time to take out those unnecessary queries and clean up that URL!

Invest in a heated cat bed. We've recently been noticing our cat laying on the living room heat vent whenever the furnace kicks in. Bought one of these beds last night. Hopefully it'll be his new favourite spot to lie.

Sharks eat fish (when they're not befriending them) just like german penguins, though sharks are probably much messier about it! (they eat german penguins too, but I don't want to upset you)

Ich liebe Pinguine.

You can get her a bed that only heats:

We have a couple at our house, and they work really well even with our less than skinny cats.

I have a few of these heated cat beds. A couple for 2 outdoor feral cats I feed and one for an older indoor cat. I bought the first one for my 17 year old cat that died a couple years ago. They only warm up when a cat lays on them. They love them. You can leave it plugged in all the time.

For some reason I think it said up to 25 pounds, and it was labelled for small dogs as well, so you might be good.
Edit: I was wrong, it up to 50 pounds! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005AUM8U0/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493664401&sr=8-1&keywords=sunny+window+seat+for+cats

He is one of the most spoiled cats out there. He is my baby, and he knows it! I actually had to go onto disability for depression/anxiety/PTSD, and having him around was one of the things that helped me the most. I didn't even mean to get a cat, he just showed up one November day, cold, wet and hungry. Of course, once you feed a cat, you have a cat. At this point I'm getting help to get off of disability, which I would have done regardless of whether or not I had a cat, but he did make getting to this point easier. Once I've gotten a job and hits some of my major goals I'll be getting him one of these.

But...but..that's not shaped like a shark at all.

Until you can get her to a vet, consider getting some hiding places for her (https://www.amazon.com/Removable-Cushion-waterproof-Bottom-Lovely/dp/B00DZITYGU/ref=sr_1_13?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1481165419&sr=1-13&keywords=Cat+house), so at least she isn't so stressed. If she pees on the carpet in the same spot, you can try putting something down in that area (towel or wee-wee pad) to protect the carpet for now, until you can figure something out. You might also want to consider a consult with a veterinary behaviorist.

I got this one because of the amazon reviews: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176F9AM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It doesn't get too hot and turns off when the cat isn't sitting on it. Had it for 2 years and it still works.

I got this one three years ago https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B005AUM8U0/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it’s holds my 14lb Siberian no problem. Suction cups do a great job

This is the one I bought. It does ship from China and takes like a month+ to arrive, and from what I've seen posted they unfortunately don't ship to Canada.

Though for the record, our cats are scared of them. Probably because our 2 year old chased them with the sharks yelling, "Aaaaahhhhh! I'm going to eat you!! Nom nom nom!"
