Top Reddit comments about Cat Litter Box Enclosures:

How is the ventilation? Does the room receive daylight?

Mind that cats strongly prefer their food, water, and litter to ALL be far away from one another, with litter farthest. I recommend one in each corner of the room (sacrifice on the space between food and water if you must, but not litter). Litterbox furniture can help save space but can exacerbate the smell issue because parts of the urine will accumulate on the inner ceiling of the box, so make sure it's made of a material that can cope with that, like this product.

Floating shelves are a good idea, and you don't have to put food and water on the floor technically. A fountain with a filter may be wise to deal with the small ecosystem, as it were.

Cats are semi-arboreal, so the floor space isn't a real difficulty with imagination (and money definitely helps).

An adult cat on a stable diet who is settled and healthy shouldn't have terrible elimination odor (though every nose is different), I think kittens and fosters can tend toward smellier byproducts.

As to the privacy thing, I do think it matters. From the beginning, I've never hovered over my cat in the litter box or tried to talk to her while she was using it. I might just be lucky, but she's never had an accident (except for the occasional dingleberry stuck to her fur). She has an open litter box, though, and it's fine. It's also easier to clean. This one is pretty good and has a removable rim around it: https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B0035H38W2/ref=acr_search_hist_3?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=three_star&showViewpoints=0

Unfortunately, I have the same issue as you with the cat not covering her poos sometimes. She'll just "scratch" the walls around her or the floor instead of covering the poos. I think the only thing that would solve it is if I got an even bigger litter box, but the one she has is already pretty huge. Maybe I'm a little stingy with the cat litter sometimes, so I'll try to increase the depth when I can.

If fleas aren’t an issue there you should be good without it. Like I said, I’m in the southern US and they are awful. If you have ticks up there I would definitely use something as most will protect against ticks also.

They make harnesses and leashes for cats, so if you start using it while he/she is young they will get used to it and can safely be outside with you. We have a lot of predators here from coyotes to alligators, so mine have always been exclusively indoors (except for the screened porch!).

For litter, I’ve used Fresh Step and Tidy Cats and both have been good. I tried Arm & Hammer once and wasn’t impressed as it didn’t contain the smell very well (cat pee has a very strong ammonia scent). They also make all natural litters now using pine chips and other fancy stuff, but the simple clump and scoop works just fine for us! Some people swear by litter box liners, but if you end up with a cat who likes to really bury their poop (like mine), it just ends up torn up and leaking everywhere. I just get a new pan whenever it gets gross (they’re not that expensive).

Dogs like to eat cat poop so I would go with a covered litter box and scoop daily! My boy is too big for a covered box, so I got one of these to put his pan in! It really helps with the smell and I put it by a window with a bed on top so he loves to lay there and watch the world!

Honestly it's pretty impossible to get any "misses" out of wood, since wood soaks it in. You'd need some pretty strong chemicals to combat that. Maybe consider a litter box that isn't wood? There's some pretty nice ones on the market like THIS ONE. Then you could use softer cleaners for your asthma :)

u/senlei23 · 1 pointr/cats

I had the same issue but I went with this ! works well and you'll have to work with the kitty litter til you find one that masks the smell. For us, Fresh Step was the best and we haven't had a problem. Plus we put her food dish on top (away from our dog).
Seems pricey but well worth the one time expense.

Picking the cat will be easier than you think. You'll feel a connection.

Covered litter box hiders like these are worth their weight in gold: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XC21GBM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ljQQzb73APNCB

Cats like to scratch, they like to climb, and they like to be up high. Anything you can get them that allows for this is good. Cat condos (the carpet-covered climbing tower types) can be pricey but they are worth it. You can sometimes get a good deal used on Craigslist or at a garage sale, and there are plenty of online plans for DIY options.

Laser pointers are some of the best cat toys ever. Crumpled balls of paper are also a big hit.

u/midcitycat · 2 pointsr/dogs

We have three cats and a dog. Both this dog and our previous dog LOVED cat poop. Two key items 100% solved our problems:

  1. Doorway gate with cat door: https://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Extra-Tall-Gate-Small/dp/B000JJFNJK/
  2. Litter cabinet: https://www.amazon.com/Merry-Products-Washroom-Bench-White/dp/B004E8M7PK/

As a bonus, the doorway gate provides a room where the dog is never allowed. This is pretty key to most peaceful cat/dog coexistence situations. The cats need to know they have a space they can retreat to that is safe and all their own.
u/Luciditi89 · 3 pointsr/Pets

You can get a really cute furniture to put the cat box in so it looks nice in your room. I was looking into it but then my roommates let me put the cat box in one of the closets (which I’ve turned into her little room). I can link an example if you are interested. It cost a bit but it will look really nice and probably help with litter tracking in your room

There are lots of great ones out there. You can purchase or use them as ideas to DIY your own.

Washroom Cabinet

Mahogany Cabinet

Bench - this is one of my favorite ideas. Very easy to disguise!

Nightstand - I'm not so sure about having a little box right beside the bed, but with minimal space it would do in a pinch as long as it was diligently maintained.

Hope this helps! :D

Litter cabinets are amazing. I bought this https://www.amazon.com/Petsfit-21x25x35-Double-Decker-Enclosure-Non-Toxic/dp/B00XKX6TFE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1511853246&sr=8-8&keywords=litter+cabinet Dogs like cat poop. Its pretty normal. Of course you don't want them to eat it.

u/levislegend · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I need this litter box cover/table on my kitty wishlist because I have two cats and they are literally the MESSIEST CATS I've ever seen. The litter box is in our bedroom, and like 5 minutes after I sweep it it's covered in litter again. hoping something like this will help stop that!

Thanks for the contest!

u/digitaldays · 1 pointr/AskNYC

I had the same issue for too long. I recently got one of these "scoop free" litter boxes and put it in a cat bench thing and it's honestly been a dream. 2 cats and I can go 4-5 days without smelling anything.

u/drizzlepop · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

I agree to ditch the coffee table, get something black or white. You need a curtain rod, but those beige curtains don't look too bad, especially with the carpet that's there. I'd add some color in the form of cushions and a throw for the sofa.

There are cabinets like this available to hide a litterbox in, which might be a good option if it must be in the living room..

I bought this and did a really nice paint job on it. Looks fantastic, has held up for years.

u/rallyrotties · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

What about a nice looking box that the cats can get into but the dog can’t? Something like [this?](The Refined Feline RLB-MA Wood Cat Litter Box, Mahogany https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000YSNQ0Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MqPiDbX5R49HA)

I’ve seen similar that were made from cheap IKEA furniture. I bet you could come up with something.

u/onkiekat · 2 pointsr/cats

I have this and it is awesome. Designer Catbox Litter Box Enclosure in Espresso https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005AFMJWC/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_roKqub1VBEX48. I put an automatic light in it though, so the kitty can see what she is doing.

u/srmatto · 1 pointr/AskNYC

We bought one of these. Its kind of expensive and maybe you could buy something similar from goodwill and modify it to add a cat entry to save money. At any rate we notice far more odor if the front doors get left open so it is effective, but its not a silver bullet.

We also use the Dr. Elsey's blue box litter.

u/jollygoodvelo · 2 pointsr/cats

My cat got handed in to a shelter because he peed over the side of the tray all the time. We've got a big one with a lid like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001G0FHY2/ - not a single problem.

u/kuffara · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

FYI, this appears to be the exact same thing that you have.

u/LadyVanya · 2 pointsr/cat

You can get really cool enclosures to hide the kitty litter and decrease the amount of litter getting spread around. Here are the ones i have:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004E8M7PK (i painted this one espresso to match my furniture)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0012T6KRU

u/koravel · 1 pointr/cats

Here When you build it, you can have the hole facing the other direction. We usually keep the food and water on top and use a cheap litter box on the inside.

u/wizardbeasty · 2 pointsr/cats

Some cats are just extra crazy. What if you put the litter box inside an enclosure thing to dampen the scratching sound?

u/PigeonGoddess · 11 pointsr/toddlers

I bought this catbox cabinet and screwed in some of those child proofing cabinet door latches. This thing is really long, so if you push the litter box all the way to the back and put a litter mat inside and out most of the litter will get caught.

I also caulked the seams where the wood pieces come together to keep it from leaking if there were any messes outside the box.

u/billybobjoe3 · 1 pointr/breakingmom

We've got two, like, cabinet litter boxes, like so, so gross to clean out. Looks better, but way more work because everyone just has to piss and shit everywhere.

u/Avridt · 1 pointr/dogs

I found a not so cheap solution. I bought this to hide the litterbox. It’s deep and has an exterior entrance and interior entrance (that make a sort zig zag entrance?). Because of that it keeps my dog out no problem. You can make it even more difficult for the dog to get into by putting the entrance facing a wall with just a few inches for the cat to get through. My cats figured it out in a few tries and my dog hasn’t been able to get in for a nasty “treat” in months.

Designer Catbox Litter Box Enclosure in Espresso https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005AFMJWC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mkwhDb5H5XDXH

That’s the amazon link, I think I found it for cheaper on chewy or overstock though when I bought it.
