I totally agree with TheCatGuardian's post. We just adopted our first cat from a shelter and he is 8 months old, and honestly he's still a bit of a handful at times (but that should be expected with any new pet). Try to get one over a year, if not closer to 2 years, as ours is still learning how to play nice and not nipping our ankles to get attention. My husband has always had cats, but this was my first pet and we adopted because I've always wanted one. I did a ton of research and here's what I would suggest as far as supplies:

A high sided litter box with rim - to keep them from kicking litter around and the high walls help keep everything inside. I didn't waste the money on litter liners. They seem gimmicky to me.

Pooper Scooper - It's cheap and gets the job done. Nothing else needs to be said about it.

Stainless Steel Bowl(s) - This one gets good reviews and is the perfect size for their food. You can get two, one for wet and one for dry food. Though I got this one for dry and got a cute oval dish at walmart for ~$2 for his wet. Whatever you want.

Slightly larger bowl for water - Make sure they have plenty for fresh water. I give him new water in the AM and evening after work. I know a lot of people rave about water fountains...but honestly I didn't want to spend the money initially, and my kitty seems to be perfectly fine drinking from the bowl. It'd be worth it to see how your cat feels about the bowl...esp since they will be drinking from bowls at the shelter...they shouldn't be too picky. You can spoil them later on if you decide to, but definitely not necessary.

A safety collar - Make sure it is either a break-away or elastic to ensure the cat doesn't get strangled if it climbs and gets stuck on something and is hanging by its neck. I liked this one because it didn't have an annoying bell, though some like the bell to let you find your cat in the house. The collar also ensure that if the cat gets out anyone who finds him will know he belongs to someone and isn't just a feral cat that they can take for themselves.

Scratching Board - Simple and good reviews. Seems like it will last. You can also get one or two cardboard cheaper ones and see what they prefer to scratch on. My cat doesn't really scratch that much...he uses the scratching posts that are part of his cat tree.

Cat Perch - This is the one we got so he can look out the window. It seems like a good balance of expense and functionality...especially at first. The cat might not even like jumping up on things, so at least this is a safe buy since it's not that tall but still lets them get up off the floor.

Cat bed - This one is highly reviewed and really durable. It's machine washable and will last forever. I really love this bed.

Simple toys at first: Wand Toy, Jingle Balls, Ball Circle Thing, Little Catnip Critter. He also likes paper bags, toilet paper rolls, and his laser pointer. I highly recommend the laser pointer...ours is green.

Greenies Treats

As far as food, you want to ask what they feed at the shelter and get a bag of that at first even if you read online that it isn't "the best." We wanted to get our cat on a mainly wet food diet, so we left his shelter dry food out at night, and gave him half a can of wet food in the morning before work, and half a can at night beofre bed ~9PM, and took the dry food away while the wet food was out. We feed him Friskies Pate...it's actually pretty good for the price. People will get passionate about cat food. Honestly Friskies is fine for us now...they sell it in bulk at Sam's.

Litter - you want to use the kind they use at the shelter so they have comfort in that. You can switch later if you want.

You might also want to get nail clippers and a brush. Our cat is long haired and I like using a comb, but it's really up to you.

As far as gimmicks I would assume that if it seems like a luxury it probably isn't necessary. Cats are very happy with simple things. The vitals are what I listed...a bathroom, food and water (bowls), a few toys, somewhere to scratch, somewhere to get up off the floor, and a safety collar. The bed isn't absolutely vital, but it's nice for them to have somewhere that they feel secure and happy...even if they don't use it at first.

Oh man I know some about this one - cat enrichment is a passion of mine, as well as cat training through positive reinforcement!! Cats DO NOT learn from or respond well to negative reinforcement (actually a misnomer, but basically 'punishment' or deterrents), and this might increase his anxiety. Definitely begin this process before baby gets here, as others have said! For you guys, enrichment will be the name of the game. Buckle up, and apologies for the long post....

Give him as many things to do at night as you can - puzzle feeders, try feeding him right before going 'in' for the night with a puzzle feeding bowl, lots of toys. Hide little stashes of food around so he has to 'hunt' for it; you can even make little scent trails. Feeding on a schedule, not leaving it down all the time, makes food much more high-reward and fun to discover. You can also leave worn shirts or bras of yours out, either next to his favorite sleeping spaces or even in them (like cat beds) so he has some 'momma smell' to comfort him when you're separated!!

Put the toys and food away during the day, except for his breakfast!! Night time can become a 'fun' time for him, but only if you do it very positively! Exiling him from the bedroom with negative stimuli (picking him up and carrying him out, chasing him out of the room, shutting the door right in his face) will reinforce the negative associations; try to get a toy that he will chase out and then shut the door once he's left of his own accord.

Some major things to think about are - active playtime, not passive play. These are things that move (either on their own battery-operated or because you drag/swing/point them), versus balls or toys that sit on the floor. Cats have a LOT more energy than we give them credit for! They have an absolutely huge hunting instinct, and get a lot of satisfaction out of using that. Try toys like battery operated laser pointer stand, ones that move with very little jostling, mice that he has to 'hunt'. Here are a few I've used - a butterfly on a wire, a mouse that goes around a track for about 7-8 minutes, a laser tower. You get the idea. None of these are perfect, but they will be new and fun! You might have to come back out a few times a night to turn them back on at intervals, but hey, you'll be up with baby or to pee anyways!! Again, put these away during the day so they are 'new' at night. You can also try cat tunnels like these for fun new territory to explore.

Speaking of territory, try to get him using his 'vertical space' (shelves on the wall, cat trees, etc) as much as possible with treats and catnip. More places to explore means more places to hide food and toys!

In general, look into as much 'fun stuff' at night as possible. He's definitely going to want to explore and get to know baby; this is normal and fine as long as it is safe. Babies actually benefit from contact with animals as it helps their immune systems!! I think that night time is definitely going to be your hardest bit, but just be as consistent as you can and start small. Start with just 15mins locked out, but again, have him chase a toy out and then have something high-value (treats, a favorite toy/game) out there to keep him occupied. Just keep building those positive associations with 'outside the bedroom' and make the bedroom as boring a place as you can for him!!!

Another good page with a lot of the same info, a little better worded haha!!

I am providing links but all of these are available at different retailers.

My girl enjoys the Catit Senses components. You can start out small and keep adding to it.

The Katris modular System looks great and my cat absolutely loves hers! We have them staggered along the wall in my living room taking her up to the point where she can touch the ceiling if she wants.

MousR is fun for cat and pet parent alike. You can control it with your cell phone or you can set it on auto- play to keep your cat entertained. It has an all day setting where it will go into sleep mode and then turn itself back on periodically throughout the day to get your kitties attention and get them to play.

The ultimate way to use up all that cat energy is with the cat-wheel, and this is the best one on the market made by One Fast Cat.

And though it is not a toy, it is important for cats to get adequate hydration and most of them do not. A pet fountain can really encourage them to drink. My girl loves hers! This is a link to what I have but there are different price ranges and styles out there.

And of course kitty has to eat. Cats naturally eat six mice a day in the wild. Doc & Phoebe’s has come up with mice feeders that satisfy the hunt, catch, kill, eat instinct that all cats have. My girl loves hers and I can honestly tell she has been more content since I have been using them. It is good to feed wet food to cats so that they get the additional moisture but I feed a combination to mine, especially since she drinks so well from her cat fountain.

Thank you so much for taking them in!

They're fine being inside a room in a house with food, water, toys (you did get them toys, yes?), things to scratch and climb, and protected from the elements. Your health questions/concerns have been covered really well by other posters. If you don't mind, I'll talk about something else.

If you haven't already, go to Walmart, Target, Petco, PetsMart or whatever your moderately-priced local equivalent is and get some cardboard scratchers (horizontal & vertical or inclined), squeaky toys, a cat pole (<$45 @ Walmart, goes from ceiling to floor with 3 shelves) or pay a bit more and get a tower. The towers are good because it gives the cats high places in addition to integrated scratching posts. However, multiple individual scratching posts are also helpful in encouraging the kittens to use them rather than your furniture or carpet. Spreading them around your home may help with this.

Nearly everyone is running some sort of Memorial Day sale right now so the towers may currently be much more reasonably priced. Also looking at some in person (my local Petco had a couple set up), if possible, gives you a better idea regarding their stability. Also recommend Amazon and Wayfair for the towers- just pay attention to the reviews.

You'll need a pet carrier to transport them; again check reviews and get a higher rated one. Because they're so small now, I would personally get a larger carrier capable of transporting all of them together until they reach a combined ~20 pounds or so.

Try to pick up a variety of toys. My cats always loved the little battery operated critters that chirped or squeaked like birds & mice. Catnip mice are almost universally adored. They'll also love chasing after things so try to get a wand toy as well. Just stroll through the pet dept and choose a few.

I second getting a larger litter box and brushes for fur. There are a ton of brushes on the market but we have Furminator, a wire brush, and another brush with metal teeth for main brushing. If your Sib has long fur then I highly recommend additional brushes that help prevent and/or remove mats. There’s even detangling spray that works great to help loosen tight mats. I also recommend getting some kitty wipes if your Sib has long fur because my kitten had poopy butt quite often.

As for toys, I found that when he was a kitten, he loved Da Bird, the Ripple Rug, and the Cat Senses circuit track. They were easily his favorite toys. Also anything with a feather or fur were (and still are) his favorites. And be prepared to play all the time! My Siberian is over 2 years old and still demands daily play time. As he got older he really got into these Trixie treat puzzles as well as this Meowijuana catnip.

One thing that surprised me the most about my Sib kitten is how much he could get into small spaces and cause trouble. We had to invest in some baby-proofing things like a baby gate and locks for cupboards.

My cat plays hard too. Undercover (different brand names, but I have the purple one) has this rod that rotates in circles with fabric over the top. Two AA batteries will last it quite some time. (SmartyKat Hot Pursuit Cat Toy Concealed Motion Toy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EZTCW94/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_zDtEybK2W9YAK)

The hexbug I spoke of is about the same price but you'll only find it online on amazon or ebay. It's this tiny nano but thing that zooms all over the floor (hard floors only) and when my cat bats it over it gets back up. With this one you just have to make sure it's in a space where it won't get stuck so you have to fish it out (under the fridge for example) (Nano Robotic Cat Toy (White/Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RWU17KS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9DtEybKTBTQHP)

A daily dose of catnip calms my buddy down as well.

Ssscat:
PetSafe SSScat https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RIA95G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PFtEybJ577FA5

You can actually buy cheaper air cans than the brand name for refills.

Here's a different brand--more budget friendly: SENTRY Stop That! For Cats, 1 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EG8LIN0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2HtEyb200JW77

Pheromone diffuser: Comfort Zone Feliway Diffuser Kit for Cats https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I9SI40S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kJtEybF3F4QSX

Remember, chewy.com is your friend. They may have some of these items for cheaper.

Also remember that cats don't understand punishment. If you yell or try to correct, sometimes they'll continue the behavior to seek attention even if it's negative attention. Best thing to do is to be consistent with your reactions and redirect the behavior of possible (example: cat scratches furniture---redirect by placing cat on cardboard scratch pad with catnip each time) and give your cat what he needs. Sounds like he has a lot of energy. So a toy that plays with him when you aren't able may be helpful. Pheromone diffuser was really helpful for my cat when he was so stressed from moving that he got sick.

My cat used to be extremely Velcro. He would cry like hell if I closed a door on him. So I don't anymore. He follows me from room to room most often but does his own thing. When he starts meowing I know he needs play time or food or enrichment of some kind. When I go to bed, he goes to bed. He doesn't sleep with me usually. Most often under the bed or on his cat tree.

Groupon, chewy.com, or amazon, or even EBay are good places to get the items I mentioned for less.

Nutrition is also really important for a cats health. Dry food is actually really bad for its health. Can cause urine crystals, weight gain, dehydration, etc. Even if it's just friskies it's better to have wet food than dry if you're on a budget

As for your boyfriend, try having him see a doctor to get on seroquel if he's able. Its often prescribed to people for sleeping problems. I take it, and within the hour I fall asleep and don't wake up until 8 hours later. Also tends to help with mood problems for some people. Kratom is a great natural opiate/pain reducer that is taken in pill form. You can find it at some vape/smoke shops. It's much less addictive and better long term than vicodine and its siblings.. Obviously I'm not a doctor or anything so take this advice with a grain of salt.

u/CorgisAndCheese · 4 pointsr/bengalcats

It's like a hamster wheel for cats, bengals tend to love them. And you don't have to get a second bengal, a second cat of any breed would probably be good. You also don't have to get a second cat lol.

Other than someone taking the cat, it's not more of a risk than other cats. I do think other cats being outdoor cats are too much of a risk for them as well. That said there are alternatives for letting a cat enjoy the outdoors without giving them free roam such as harness training them, having a catio for them, or a cat proof fenced in house (which is by far the most expensive and not doable without a ton of property surrounding the house but it is possible lol)

Here are some toy suggestions to help with your kittens energy:

this wand toy which I've seen make even the laziest cat chase after I don't know what it is about this toy specifically maybe it's the leather tassels or the fur thing but I've never not seen it drive a cat crazy.

This cat ball track things

This cat dancer toy with the wall attachment Trust me that the wall attachment is super important.

Really thick pony tail elastics Be sure to watch her and make sure she doesn't try eating one.

Plastic water bottle caps, Christmas ornaments, and bouncy balls are also great things for cats to bat around when they're a bit bored.

Also things for her to climb on, a small cat tree is always great.

Good luck! And do keep in mind that she'll be less energetic as she gets older.

u/oldpplfreakmeout · 2 pointsr/secretsanta

My cats love this thing. It's one of those food dispensing balls that they bat around, I call it the cat piñata. One cat even refuses to eat out of her food plate if there's still food in this ball. You'd think she'd prefer to get her food the lazy way, but nope...

One of my other cats loves this little beaver guy. She tosses it up in the air and tries to catch it. It's her absolute favorite toy, she carries it all over the house.

Her sister loves this one. I don't know what it is with them and beavers but they both love their beaver toys more than anything else I've given them. I think it's the crunchiness that attracts her to this one, she likes to carry it around and then plop on top of it and rub herself on it. I don't know.

Their mom loves the toy that comes with this scratching mat. The scratching mat itself is actually pretty great too, they love it and sometimes use is as a sleeping pad.

u/Xenokitten · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

So sorry to hear that. One popular song that might make you giggle right now is "Shoutout to My Ex"

Obvious choice, but Pharrel's "Happy" is pretty "happy" :)

And last, EXO-K's Call me Baby - My favorite song (although I don't speak the language, I just love the beat and watching so many cute men dance in unison lol) The beat is very happy :)

Something on my list under $5 are these cute cat toys :) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051BGO4E/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1QX3Y7YBAG2DK&coliid=I3FT4JMBF8H4G3&psc=1

u/waitwuh · 1 pointr/CatTraining

>do you have any recommendations for things he might be more inclined to play with on his own?

Yes! This circuit toy is a wonderful example of a self-play type of toy that can keep a kitten's attention a bit longer than balls or knit toys, because in the cat's perspective it keeps moving- but less predictably so- after the paws are off :P. As a bonus - it's pretty quiet, and your cat isn't going to lose this one under a dresser or something (because it can't leave the track). This toy was a savoir during my own cat's super-playful kitten period.

Electronic motion toys such as this one are also a possibly more-enticing option for your cat. (Though - the "motion madness" toy the same maker puts out isn't really worth it, IMO, if you see a link to that- it's loud and get struck on things easily).

You can also find corrugated cardboard scratchers that have holes in the bottom of then with dangling feathers or shiny balls inside, such as this one (although i have a cheaper version I got from wall-mart). The benefit of this combo is that your cat may be inclined to go scratch the scratcher and then get "distracted" by the play item, so basically it increases the chance the cat will play with it.

Additionally, you didn't seem to mention any toys that aren't on the floor and are perhaps a dangling attraction - that can matter a lot, as some cats perfer that type of play, and even those that don't can get tired of just one type. Do you have any dangling attractions, such as doornob hanging scratchers, or even posts that include a dangling toy of sorts, such as this one? They also make these tent-like contraptions with dangling toys. If you've ever heard of the "play types" such as "bird, mouse, bug, snake.." - that's ideally what you want to emulate with your options. Even if your kitten prefers to hunt "mice" - chasing a bird or a bug every now and then can break things up more.

Additionally, if you don't have something like an "activity mat", it might be something to look out for on the cheap. Or those tunnels - both can offer a different type of experience (the crinkly kind, I guess).

u/conparco · 6 pointsr/Siamesecats

Firstly, make sure to post pictures when you bring him/her home!

Siamese cats are very smart, and that means they bore easily. My kitten (~9mo) loves to play fetch or with the feathers on a stick because we are interacting with him and paying attention to him while he plays. But really, each of my Siamese cats (like all cats) has had his or her own favorite toy, so get little things here and there as you see them and just note what yours likes! These are my kitten's favorite. He is seriously obsessed. I get them much cheaper from a pet store near where I live. But my older guy prefers these, which I find at Wal-Mart.

I would suggest making a "warm box" with a heating pad under a soft blanket and maybe something over the top so you kitten can hide in a warm and cozy place, especially when he/she is stressed out after the move.

Another thing that I would consider an essential is some sort of perch for your cat to get up off the ground and observe the room, like a cat condo or something similar. I made one out of scrap wood and carpet, so it doesn't have to break the bank. :)

SCRATCHING POSTS! I personally do not have the patience for putting the little nail caps on them, but I find that if they have different options for scratching, they resort to the furniture less.

I am so excited for you! Your new kitten will have a great and loving home and your life will never be the same, I promise!

Hmm, well, just like people, individual cats have different preferences and interests. Definitely get some little mice (or similar-sized toys) that he can bat around. I like to look for sales on the multi-packs at PetSmart for some variety. Some cats like longer toys that they can hold with their front paws and kick with their hind legs. I would also get a long "teaser" type of toy (something like this or this), and a laser pointer is usually a safe bet.

Additionally, while not a toy, something for him to scratch is also pretty important. If you don't have room for a scratching post, there are other options like those refillable corrugated cardboard scratchers.

Congrats on your new kitty, and thank you for adopting from a shelter!!

How comfortable s she with touching her paws? I'd suggest soft paws if she's comfortable, or you could have the vet do it for you. They still allow cats to retract their claws, so they're humane, but they can't scratch up your apartment. I suggest this only because it seems so stressful & it's a quick fix for now.

For food, maybe a toy that forces your cat to play with it would fit her personality. Maybe a cat toy like this, or this? You'd have the problem of her knocking them around... but well, that's the point. It's meant to be enriching & fun for a cat like yours. You can put a food mat underneath it, so that when treats fall you don't have to worry about your floor getting dirty.

I don't have any advice for the water dish though, since you already switched it to a heavier one. Good luck!

u/grumpycatabides · 3 pointsr/guineapigs

Your pigs are such adorable little buddies! They look like a reverse Twinkie and an Oreo cookie stuffed with peanut butter. Or maybe I'm just hungry. :)

I think critters secretly laugh at us for spending money on gear for them while they happily play with something free instead. I bought my cat a massage center and she won't even acknowledge it. Cleaned it and covered it in her beloved catnip? Nothing. Brushed it against her so she could see that it felt good...nope, the only 'massage center' she's interested in are my hands (naturally, since I'm quite allergic to her). But the cord that hangs from the windows blinds? Awwwww yessshhh happyfunplaytime!

I'm going to summon /u/iamadudette and say she would like this for her ADORABLE cat, Bubby.

She's probably one of the most talented people I know, her art is incredible, even if she doesn't believe it! I chose her because she's one of my best friends and she deserves good things.

Kindness is key.

u/Lunar3 · 6 pointsr/breakingmom

I think everyone reaches a point when they just feel like they have had enough, you simply tossed him into another room where it was okay for him to throw up. You didn't throw him up against a wall, smack/hit him or try to hurt him on purpose you wanted him out of the room and if he wasn't getting out himself it was kind of like an instinct to toss him into the other room. I don't see it hurting him at all and I am sure he landed on his feet just fine, you'd be surprised the height cats can fall from and be perfectly fine.

How are they toy wise? Maybe you could buy one or two of those interactive cat toys, like this or this to help keep them more engaged with each other and with a toy so they don't feel so needy?

u/LoveaBook · 2 pointsr/CatAdvice

Try a free-feeding puzzle feeder. My cat got to a chonking 16 pounds (which is large for her size). We purchased a Catit puzzle feeder and she lost the weight in a few months. And she’s maintained herself at a perfect (for her) weight of 8.5 lbs for over 2 years now. Because my girl is a natural borne ✨Diva✨ my husband was against it at first, but it’s cheap, so...what’s to lose? I spent a couple minutes poking my fingers in and knocking bits down to show her the idea and she took to it like a fish to water. We now have a second one, of a different style and different maker, that we put elsewhere in the house and fill with a different flavor/type of food. Both my cats love them. The idea is to prevent them from easily eating too much when bored and to make eating more stimulating, like a hunt.

They can eat as much as they want for as long as they want, but they have to earn every last kibble of it. My (former) fat cat seemed to live in front of the feeder at first - knocking food down most of her waking hours. But now it’s just a few times a day, and maybe a single tablespoon’s worth of food at a time.

This is another Catit puzzle feeder. They also have a variety of puzzle feeder toys - if you’re OK with bits of kibble all over the house. This is just one example.

(We actually just had to put our former chonker on a special renal diet. (She’s 18). We picked her favorite puzzle feeder and changed just it to the new, specialty food and left the normal food in the other. My two girls haven’t had a stitch of trouble telling which is which. I think the only downside - as they see it - is that they’ve lost the diversity of two feeders. (According to the stuff I’ve read, they recommend multiple feeders spaced around the house to engage their instinct to search out food.) But I’ll be damned if I’m going to have multiples for each type of food spaced around the house. After all, there’s only so much room in my house.)

I'm actually a grad student as well, and am always looking for ways to keep the critters busy while I'm gone or studying. I've found a few helpful toys, though the best entertainment I have is a bird feeder on my deck, they will sit and chirp at the birds for hours.

I've heard good things about this toy, unfortunately you can't set it to go off while you're gone. But it has a setting to turn off after 15mins so you can set it and leave.
http://www.amazon.com/FroliCat-BOLT-Interactive-Laser-Pet/dp/B0021L8W6K

This one is amazing, it was recommended to me by a vet. If your cat is food driven this will keep him busy. You can put treats or cat nip in it, or even their whole meal.
http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-SlimCat-Food-Distributor-Ball/dp/B0018CG40O/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1348904553&sr=1-1&keywords=food+ball

This is also great for food motivated cats, one of mine will walk over and move the sliders around asking for treats. If he seems particularly bored I'll put most of his meal in this and make him work for it.
http://www.amazon.com/Ethical-Seek-A-Treat-Shuffle-Bone-Puzzle/dp/B0038WP1YC/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1348904645&sr=1-2&keywords=dog+puzzle+toys

I have this one as well, this works better for when you're home and can turn it on and off, there is no timer. My cats love to chase things under blankets, and they come running when I turn this on. It is kind of loud, so I put it in the other room while I'm studying so I don't have cats all over my books.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11539790

Hope this helps! I would highly recommend starting with the food ball or the laser light as they're a little cheaper, but I also know us pet parents like to spoil our critters.

u/Moarisa · 3 pointsr/AskVet

No medical advice re the vomiting (tech here, not a vet!) but some suggestions for pacing out meals. I've heard of people having success with putting a solid plastic ball in the bowl with the kibble. Kitty has to eat around it and can slow things down. Some special food bowls have raised areas or ridges inside so he will have to work a bit more to get the food.

There are several kinds of treat balls that you can put food in. They usually have some kind of adjustment you can make in hole size so the kibble comes out faster or slower. You can start the holes big while kitty gets used to it and gradually make them smaller for him.

You can also buy a variety of other food dispensing toys like the CatIt Digger which he will have to work at to get food out of.

I also have a cat who would gobble down everything in sight without a breath in between if given the chance and now use a treat ball and the digger to give him his breakfast every day.

u/Uniquorny · 1 pointr/CatAdvice

Russian Blue are very attractive specimens. But a cat is just a cat. Each have their own personality and preference. Most cats will only occasionally use a scratching tree, except to sit on the highest perch as if they were King/Queen. Don't skimp on the methods of entertainment. Give your friend a vast array of choices. Catnip toys, with jingly or scrunchy sounds are a good start. My feline pal is quite fond of the Purrfect Arch. Interactive toys, such as laser pointers are always fun for you and your cat. The diet of your Russian Blue won't really depend on the brand or flavor of the food, but RB's have a tendency to eat constantly and become overweight, so the strict diet you heard about may consist of the time and frequency of the feedings. If it is a kitten under 6 months, you should feed them three times a day; breakfast, lunch, dinner, just like you would. After 6 months, you can take it down to two feedings a day. Small treats in between are okay. Don't be scared, just give your pet love and attention.

Here are my kitties! The blonde one is Lyra and the black one is Duke.

This toy is Duke's absolute favorite. He doesn't know how to meow, but he squeaks and screeches whenever I pick it up. He loves to drag it around the house. Sometimes I wake up and he left it for me in the bed, or if he'll drop it on me while I'm on the computer. We have tons of toys and there are others he likes, but he treats that one like it's his safety blankey or something.

I need another 50 degree day so I can air the house back out. I hate when the air gets stale and... gross. NY and MI sound pretty similar right now. Just wet and dark. Also, pork loin is AMAZING. My dad grills it up and its just amazing.

We don't have a trader joes but I ordered some dark chocolate almonds of theirs and holy crap, they are like crack. Polished em off last night. They hit that sweet and salty note because theyre rolled in sea salt and turbinado sugar. I got them the first time in a reddit gift exchange and they changed my life. But between trader joes and that food, I think I may have to come visit.

As far as going full on grizzly on the door jamb, go buy those combs for cats that go on corners. Like this, but sub catnip with weed or something Just get like 40 of them and bear it up.

Also, we do get usps on Sundays. Its always so weird when they show up on a sunday at 11am. Though my m-sat mail doesn't come in til 5pm.

Well Splotch is back to her normal eating, which is excellent. She's got a funny little tummy it seems. Though I'll mention when we take her for a general check up in the next couple of months. And hopefully today we can get her to play with her catit super roller thing. Currently half the blue bits aren't on to encourage her. But it's mostly me batting it around going 'Look!'

Played around with watercolours yesterday. That was fun, even if J wasn't impressed with my colourful kitty. Might see about doing a bit of needle felting today.

P.S. Having a cold on and off for more than a month sucks. The last couple of days have been dreadful. I just slept on Sunday.

2 months old? And you are wondering how to "tame" him?! I rescue cats, mostly kittens and there is only one way to "tame" a rambunctious kitten-PLAY WITH HIM! Wear him out. He is a little body with all of this energy that he needs to get out...he is doing what every kitten does if someone doesn't play with them...he knocks over plants, he tears stuff up, he is a terror. Find some toys that are interactive for when you are not there but play with him twice a day for 15-20 minutes or more. I recommend a laser pointer for playtime with him. That wears a kitten out more than anything.

Use a spray bottle, squirt him when he does something you don't want him to do-BE CONSISTENT and don't let him see it come from you. You want him to think...gee, everytime I step on this table, water comes from somewhere and I don't like it. If he knows it comes from you, when you aren't there he will do it.

Here are some toys I like to use for these little guys.

Also, do you realize that he will be this way for a few more months? Don't play with him using your hands (he will think they are toys and might bite you) and get him a scratching post. He is at the point, if he is two months old, that he can be neutered as well.

Good luck

I like turtles, turtles are awesome. I've been wanting this catnip squirrel for my cats because one of them is obsessed with squirrels - she 'talks' to one every morning at the window. It's precious. If I ended up on a deserted island, I'd be screwed - the sun would fry me in minutes and mosquitos would eat me alive. With that said, at least I could have a little squirrel toy as a friend. It would be my Wilson.

I have several cats, including one medium haired and one long, so this is a constant battle in my house. I gave up on black clothes a long, long time ago because one simply cannot win that war.
What you can do to help somewhat is get an shedding blade. This is the one my cats love and it's really durable—the dog version should work if you can't find a cat version. A brushing arch will allow kitty to brush himself somewhat as well.
Also, if you can afford it once a year and live in a warm climate, I highly recommend an annual grooming session where they shave all but his head (and possibly tail, up to you). I have a long haired calico that gets hers done in May of every year and her fur is just back to normal now for winter season. While it may require sedation, after it's done she loves it, almost as if she's a new cat (seriously!) and the summer cat hair everywhere problem is minimal, so it's really worth it.

A bored kitty is a destructive kitty! Figuring out her preferred type of toys (tracks, balls, crinkle, wands, etc) can take a little time, but giving her lots of toys and scratching targets can make a big difference keeping her from destroying your things instead.

Teach her what "no" means, just a stern voice and then redirecting to something good (such as, when she scratches the couch, say no, then put her on the scratching post and praise her there) makes life a lot easier later. "Get down" can be helpful, too, but some cats ignore that one even when they know what it means (looking at you, my fluffy girl!)

Hands are not toys. If she tries to bite or claw your hands, say no, remove them from reach, and replace with a toy. If she, like one of mine, thinks this means hands are an EXTENSION of toys, then you have to say no, remove hands, and walk away or otherwise remove attention. Then give kitty a toy from a distance.

Here are some of my favorite toy options, none are too expensive and they cover some variety so you can learn what kind she likes:

  • toy pack
  • jingle balls
  • and most especially CatIt track (or basically any other CatIt product.)

Also a slightly more expensive one, but the Ripple Rug is hugely popular with all my kitties, they like to burrow in and attack stuff, I can hide toys in there, they pop out the holes and attack each other or wand toys.
u/1337GameDev · 1 pointr/CATHELP

Oof...

This will likely be an annoying process.

It could be a variety of things:

  1. Health issue
  2. cats don’t like brand/kind of litter
  3. cats don’t like shape, color, etc of litter box
  4. cats are bored and see it riles you
  5. cats are intact males and are marking
  6. cats are altered males who developed the marking habit before being altered
  7. cats found a scent there once, and now go there out of habit
  8. cats hate locations of litter boxes
  9. cats are stressed from something
  10. Cats want the litter box cleaner
  11. Cats don’t have a good diet
  12. They are just unruly and do this for fun / laziness

First and foremost, eliminate health issues, and take them for a vet checkup and do standard blood work to check for abnormalities.

I would recommend renting / buying an upright carpet shampoo machine.
I bought gf a bissel one for $350 and it works very well.

Then, after shampooing, use an enzymatic cleaner, such as “Natures miracle.”

Then, I would look at the little box. Move the box closer to where they pee, and away from noises, running water, etc.

    Then, I’d try new litter.
Cats can be sensitive to the smell, dust / powder, and even the grain size.

You can also attempt to clean the litter box more, and scoop it every few hours. Me and my gf bought the “Litter Robot,” but a lot of people can’t justify the $425 price tag to have it auto scoop for you.

You can also get a different litter box.
My cats love our “igloo” style one (also stops our dog from eating the cat droppings).

Then, I’d invest in a cat tree, with 3 levels to it. Chewy has a decent one for $80 delivered that me and gf bought 2 of for our cats.

Some random toys also work well if they are bored, a variety: a catnip infused one, a ball, a spring shaped one, a mouse, a string (this can be controversial as it can encourage the cat to chew long slender objects - such as cords, and shoelaces), and a “ball stuck inside a bowl” kind of toy.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077B9PHKD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_zd6qDb0X9EEDQ

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005UMC1SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Gg6qDb5YM13YQ

Then, try and get a toy that is some kind of mouse or feather, on a rope with a stick and exercise them for a few minutes every day.

You can also look at their diet, and if they are not getting enough water (which sounds odd, but cats can act out in odd ways when their diet isn’t correct). You can try wet food, if you are t doing that, and adding a little extra water to it to form a small soup. Watch their reaction over time, and if they pee more, this might not be the issue (they may pee a few times with the increased water intake, so watch over a few days if you do this).

If you have an older style basement, with a “French drain,” your basement might be moist, and encourages mold growth, and could be stressing the cats. You can attempt to fix this with a dehumidifier (sealing some ingress points in the basement). This is assuming they pee in the basement that is.

Hopefully this helps. In the end, it might not, and the cats just might be a bit unruly, which does suck :/

Edit: I just noticed, the litter box is on a different floor.

Cats “should” have a litter box PER floor, and realistically one extra per cat (most cats get get away with sharing).

We have a cat that eats too fast then vomits, and we got one of these to slow her down. https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Senses-2-0-Digger-Cats/dp/B015P13QMM It definitely helps, she has to pull each piece of food out with her paw. It took her a little while to figure it out, but now she's a pro. Still a little bit pukey but much, much better. I'm actually thinking of also buying another one made by the same company that is shaped like a tree, and alternating them every few months.

Sometimes it takes my cats (both about a year old, have had them for 10 months) a little while before they take to a new toy so if they don't like something now, they may grow to like it later.

However, two toys they absolutely love and never get bored with are springs and a ball track, similar to this but they come in many different sizes.

I also often give my cats pieces of meat as a treat- chicken, sushi, lunch meats. Only in small amounts and they've never gotten diarrhea from it. Keep the amounts small and it shouldn't be an issue for him. Pet stores also sell kitten milk for relatively cheap if you want to give him something special.

As for chewing on cables or scratching things he shouldn't, just be persistent in shooing him from doing those things. It can be a pain in the ass sometimes but just be vigilant. Spraying them with water or canned air is really effective. My cats had to learn that destroying certain things was wrong and it took some time. Now I just have to give them a "hey!" and they stop.

If you notice them scratching up your furniture, give him something of his own that he can destroy. My cats love cardboard boxes and those cardboard scatchpads. I also bought them this small cat tree that they absolutely LOVE.

I had never owned cats before and used to think they were all just assholes and that's just not true. They can be very loving and obedient pets. You just have to work to get the behavior you want.

I want to be friends with Hanners and Viktor, truly. well....I haven't really figured out pups yet, but I would like to meet some cool cats to see if I want help overthrowing my human. In addition, I need help defeating [this terrifying creature] (http://www.amazon.com/FroliCat-BOLT-Interactive-Laser-Pet/dp/B0021L8W6K/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1FC6W7IXTUVPL&coliid=I1YVB78XW2WUUN) Perhaps you, Hypnocat, would be an able bodied warrior up to this task?

Thanks for hosting! The kitties would love these mice or this squirrel since they can't get the real ones outside.

u/pumpkinbread987 · 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Definitely get your cat's teeth checked. Also, your cat might be eating too fast. I highly recommend trying a slow feeder/interactive feeder. There's all kinds of different types. Here's a link to one my friend uses (sorry I don't know how to format on mobile)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015P13QMM/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1484204812&sr=8-5&keywords=cat+feeder+puzzle

It's a Catit Design Senses Super Roller Circuit Toy. I got one of these for my mom's kitten a few years back, she still loves it.

u/mickmudd · 1 pointr/Wishlist

Yes, yes they do :) Catit It does not come with seeds or soil. You have to get that separately.

u/april_glowers · 1 pointr/cats

Oh, that inspired me - evidently there are new cat toys that are self-running laser pointers.... something like this: http://www.amazon.com/FroliCat-BOLT-Interactive-Laser-Pet/dp/B0021L8W6K/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1426122481&sr=8-4&keywords=laser+pointers+for+cats

It looks like it only stays on for 15 minutes though.

u/iheartgawker · 2 pointsr/kittens

I would also add some catnip and toys that allow you re re-fill them with catnip. After a month or so the catnip goes stale and my cat ignores the toy, but once we fill it back up he goes nuts! Something like this is great.

u/misplacedhippie · 2 pointsr/cats

some cats like http://www.amazon.com/FroliCat-BOLT-Interactive-Laser-Pet/dp/B0021L8W6K

I got my cat a friend to play with.

u/Old_Clan_Tzimisce · 4 pointsr/aww

She's not necessarily rubbing against those things to scratch herself or groom herself, though. My cat does all that and most of the time she's doing it to mark the thing with her scent.

Try getting your cat something like this. That one is $10 on Amazon (so costs about what it would cost to make your own) and my cat loves it.

u/OneFleurAll · 2 pointsr/GiftIdeas

You said he likes prank gifts, so what about this majestic pooping dogs calendar? Or you could get him this cat grass and planter for his feline friends?

u/DumpsterFolk · 2 pointsr/cats

If it's specifically your stuff, try buying her some toys and sleep with them for a few nights before leaving them around. Also rub your feet on them.

My cat has this stupid mint leaf toy that I bought on a whim at the supermarket and it's ended up her favourite. Any of the Pet Stages cat chews should be a great size for chewing and batting about. My cat also has a plush toy meant for dogs that we throw around. Getting your scent on a stuffed animal might be comforting to your kitty.

u/HalNicci · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. I thought this was a pretty neat bed.

  2. I have this catnip toy on my list for my cat. My dogs got his other toy and took out a rattly thing it had in it. He still loved the toy, but now it has completely disappeared. I think he would like this one, also, he has never tried catnip before.
u/lindab · 2 pointsr/Pets

I got one of these for my stray cat I just took in. I work from home and had to move the toy out of my office because the sound was driving me nuts, she plays with it constantly. I'm glad she likes it though. My husband's cat has no interest in it.

How about springs such as these. They can both spin and bounce. If she's not into mice, you can also try plastic balls (some of them with jingle bells inside like these) or crinkle balls since some cats enjoy the sounds they make.

u/JavaMoose · 1 pointr/videos

It's a toy from CatIt, I had one for my kitties, they loved it. Well made stuff.

u/the_real_penny · 3 pointsr/aww

Yup! It has a ball in it that can light up. I love it because it keeps the cats busy and the dogs can't eat the ball. The track also comes apart so you can change up the shape if you want.

Oh man...! Interactive toys? Until she got older and lazy, my cat loved her [scratcher ] (https://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Turbo-Scratcher-Cat-Toy/dp/B000IYSAIW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1481180797&sr=8-6&keywords=cat+scratcher). And those little plastic [jingle balls] (https://www.amazon.com/Hartz-Play-Midnight-Crazies-Toys/dp/B000BO96K0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1481180915&sr=8-3&keywords=cat+jingle+balls). She likes those hartz ones, I guess because they are easier for her to pick up and carry. We used to find them in bed with us all the time!

Anyway, those two things really helped us get through those kitten crazies. Now we just have to deal with her stealing our pillows and kicking us in the head while we try to sleep!

u/IllusionOf_Integrity · 2 pointsr/cats

Definitely. I got this thing for my cat and she goes nuts rubbing her face and body against it

Best $10 I ever spent

u/justanotherkatlady · 1 pointr/cats

Would a slow feeder toy be a possibility? I let my cats forage food out of one and it's legit just sit and use one paw to get the food out.

This is pretty much my cat arsenal. Not sure if these will work with your man but figured i'd put them out there. I also buy cat sticks for them to chew on but usually you have to supervise them because big chunks get chewed off.

I thought, man, this really reads like an ad. Then I clicked your link, which is a tracking redirect, and it has a referal ID hanging off the end of the Amazon link.

For anyone who doesn't enjoy being tricked by people to make money for them by pretending to be regular redditor, here is a direct link without the referral. (It's catnip mouse toys, btw.)

In fact, this account does this on a regular basis when looking at its history. Always a link to ammoscanner.com that redirects to the same Amazon affiliate ID (3917-20), and never with disclosure.

The mouse wand toy is also my annoying/hyperactive yet cute/adorable cat's favorite toy. I also have the other toy you linked and yeah it's not a toy he plays with every day, maybe twice a week if we're lucky.

I recently bought this for my cats. It's still not as entertaining as the wand toy but it usually works for about 5-10 minutes every couple of days, especially when i tie different things to the end of it.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZTCW94/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But no matter what toy you get him. You and Eleanor will always be his favorite "toys" so just get in the habit of having a designated play time where you wear him out. Also, there's another toy similar go go cat wand mouse toy which has a longer string to it and is a bird instead. I use this one when I'm lying on the couch or in my computer chair because I can idly flick it around (due to the longer string) while I'm watching something else.

u/InvincibleAgent · 1 pointr/AbsoluteUnits

I've heard good things about this feeder. The cat has to work for it.

u/Relenq · 2 pointsr/cats

My cat has a roller track that he can use autonomously. We don't tend to see him use it that often nowadays, but he does occasionally play with it in the mornings while he's waiting for us.

He also has a tall cat tree where he can sleep/watch out of the windows, and he often uses the windowsill in our study to watch for birds. He also has his pick of cardboard boxes scattered around the apartment and often chooses to play/sit/nap in them on his own.

We also have a tunnel feeder, and a treat ball -- both used to keep him occupied and thinking at meal times.

I bought [this laser pointer] (PetSafe Bolt Interactive Laser Cat Toy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0021L8W6K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WtKRBbZPXM13E) for my cat, but he's too lazy to play with it. But, it's my dog's absolute favorite toy. He chases it up walls and all over the place. When I turn it off, I literally have to hide it because he drags it back out and turns it back on and drives us insane lol

u/QThirtytwo · 6 pointsr/Cinderblock

This is what worked for us. It really slows down their eating so they don’t stuff themselves. And my lazy fat one is too lazy to dig out more than she needs so she got to a healthy weight pretty fast. Also, we give them a can of wet food at night.

u/ugottahvbluhair · 2 pointsr/cats

I think this is the laser I bought. It turns itself off after 15 minutes. Sometimes I set it up in the basement and shut the door so my cat can play without the dog. Since your dogs keep stealing the cat toys you might want to only take them out when you can supervise or when the dogs can't get to them. You could also get a cat tower that has toys on it. Hopefully the dogs wouldn't try to climb it.

u/screen317 · 1 pointr/aww

My Velcro adores stuffed mice. These are his favorites. Since those constantly get batted under the sofa (I rescued 5 of them this morning), I also got this which won't fit under there. He carries it around, attacks it, snuggles it and loves all up on this darn rat.

I also built (ok, glued and used a staple gun for padding/upholstering) a cat tree (I hate the ones in the shops) from a couple of Ikea LACK tables - a side table and a coffee table - and he climbs on and off those all the time when I'm home, so I assume he does while I'm at work as well.

Solution

Adopt a cat after you move. Gives an extra level of stress to the new kitten.

However, try to get the second cat right when you move in, so that the original cat doesn't have a lot of time to establish territory

Dems do not have the ability to beat him in the field because all their complaints can be used against them.. they are full ass hypocrites..

This is why I support tulsi.. she isn’t in this to say orang man bad.. she’s in it for us.. beating trump isn’t the mission, empowering and protecting Americans is the mission..

To average voters.. dems want to tax you more, and take away your rights and hate on everything America.. republicans want to lower taxes, shoot guns and have screaming eagles with American flags..

If we were serious about winning we would change our image.. we love our country and only want to make it better.. we shouldn’t get lost in the weeds trying to please specific constituencies.. (looking at you warren) dems need a little more empathy for their fellow American.. we are all doing the best we can even if that isn’t good enough..

It’s called a “self groomer” and made by a company called CatIt. I couldn’t find a specific listing on the PetSmart site, but here’s a listing on Amazon for the one we have.

Update: I found the exact one from the video on Amazon, dubbed “2.0”. It seems really the only difference is the colour (grey instead of blue).

The other cat might benefit from a food dish that forces him to eat like scooper cat. I tried one of these for my puker (so I didn’t have to feed him 10 pieces of kibble at a time), but he hated it. To add a little to what's already been said...

Because they're purebred, their immune systems are often not the greatest. This means they can't be outdoor cars, so you need to blow off all their energy. Add in their high energy levels and intelligence, and you will need at least 45min a day and a variety of toys (that auto-laser will interest them for about 2min, before they figure it out and just punch the laser in it's origin spot) to make sure your Aby is exercised enough that it will let you sleep through the night.

Because they're purebred, they are expensive and people in the world will realize this. Seriously don't let them outside; they will be kidnapped. I have had people try to take mine from me when I have them in a carry bag and am taking them to the vet.

They are incredibly three-dimensional. Clear off the tops of all shelves... no, just clear all breakables off every space you have. Install more shelves. You do not have enough shelves.

The breed is prone to a few health issues that you need to watch out for and try to pre-treat with specific high-quality foods. Bladder/kidney issues and bad teeth. Brush your cats teeth as often as you can. May I recommend welders gloves to help save your fingers from the fallout of this activity.

They can get depressed if left alone for too long or not given enough time/attention. Depression can make them sick. Ideally, get two Abys. Otherwise, have another cat or dog around.

They will usually attach themselves to one person. They will love the entire family, but will super-freakishly-obsessively love one of you. If you are the kind of person who closes the cats out at night so you can sleep, an Aby is not for you. Being separated from you like that will cause destructive behaviour. Either embrace sleeping with your pet in a glorious snuggle-pile of love, or understand that everything you own will be broken. And not just 'cats push things off shelves' broken. I mean, they will dig into your bag, find your headphones and destroy them. They will learn to open doors, zippers, containers, cupboards and drawers. They are smart as fuck and have no problems with using their powers for evil.

I'd really appreciate a new flash drive, I have to take classes online to finish high school and a flash drive is required. My parents wont buy me a new after I lost one and broke the other within three years. >.<

I could also use this three-in-one charger. My ipod charger broke last night and my phone charger is starting to go as well. :(

One last thing, this chewy cat toy, my cat has recently taken up chewing everything he can get his paws on - that's how my ipod charger broke, so this would be really helpful as well.

Thank you very much for the contest!

u/Denmarkian · 2 pointsr/diyelectronics

If you're too broke to afford a $17 laser toy then I'm afraid you won't be able to hack one together for cheaper. The cheapest small dev board I can think of is itself $16 and you'd still need at least 3 servos, a mirror, ball joint, laser, power supply, wire, and a soldering iron.

Work her out with a wand toy like Da Bird to get her started, then set this on the floor and turn it on when you get tired. My cats go nuts for it!

u/MagneticFlea · 2 pointsr/cats

My cat did this - making up for lost time when her teeth were too sore to eat.

We had to switch to wet food for half of her diet and put the dry food in a game that slows her eating (there are several devices, we used this)

u/alkaliphiles · 7 pointsr/cats

My girlfriend's two cats go ballistic if there isn't food available at all times.

My cat eats til she pukes, too. To try and prevent that, we bought two puzzle feeders. My cat also tends to harass us until we go with her to monitor her eating.

Since we got the puzzle feeders, our cats eat a lot less food overall. But mine still needs a chaperone.

u/szor · 2 pointsr/Wishlist

Emmy is irrationally obsessed with these mice. (addon, if that makes a difference.) We had to take them all away from her when she lived at my parents' house because the dog liked to eat them (and puke them up) but now that she's living in my apartment, she can have them again! The one remaining mouse is already lost, and she's been in the apt. only 2 days.

Apples don't make great pets.
