🎓 Reddit experts on classic rock music
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where classic rock music are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin is my current favourite song, and I hope you like it as well! The lyrics to this song are in the video's description, by the way.
If you'd like to hear more Led Zeppelin, here are some of my favourites.
If you're interested, Mothership is an amazing compilation album of Led Zeppelin and a great first Zeppelin album (I myself HATE compilation albums, but there's something special about this one.. it's lovely).
If you'd rather buy a studio album, my personal favourites are Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin IV (or ZOSO) that I both highly recommend.
Now, if you don't fancy Led Zeppelin, here are some of my other favourite songs:
These are just a few, but if you'd like me to recommend more, please let me know. I'll be more than happy to! Happy travels in your music search! :)
EDIT: Added more songs because I'm 400% indecisive when it comes to picking favourites..
[Metallica - Eye of the Beholder] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCuaPUVFbzg)
Not the strongest song from their ...And Justice for All album but it does get the message across. It's about the limitation and restriction of freedom of speech and freedom of expression The government, the elite and the media (one of whom or all three play the role of the Eye of the Beholder) assures the people that we have those rights to say, read, watch and do what we want but in reality, our freedoms are actually very limited and restricted to the Eye of the Beholder's liking as explained in this verse:
"Doesn't matter what you see
Or into it what you read
You can do it your own way
If it's done how I say"
In the chorus, it also mentions how they can use what you said or did against you by bending it.
"Independence limited
Freedom of choice
Choice is made for you my friend
Freedom of speech
Speech is words that they will bend
Freedom with their exception"
This, unfortunately, is what's going on to this day especially with many censorship advocacy groups (like the Parents Television Council for example) coming in and certain politicians who will be willing to give up parts or most of our rights to please the elitists, from whom they get big paychecks for doing their dirty work.
[The album Permanent Waves by Rush would be a nice addition to my collection.] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000001ESN/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2QB7Z2PVJMIHO&coliid=I1018XJ8IE5ZWM)
Sorry for the extremely long and even political entry but thanks for the contest. :)
I have been listening to music for a long time; grew up in the 70's but am not mired in baby boomer nostalgia.
I like many genres. An album that is good enough to enjoy in its entirety is an album to treasure. I'll pick three.
The White Stripes: De Stijl
The Avett Brothers: I and Love and You
Warren Zevon was over-looked and under-appreciated. The guy had so much talent. I love his entire body of work but have special affection and appreciation for his first 'official' album, the eponymous Warren Zevon.
http://www.amazon.com/Warren-Zevon/dp/B000002GY5
I'd recommend buying the soundtracks. I listen to them all the time while I'm writing.
SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE ENTIRE SERIES
Miniseries
Richard Gibbs is the primary on this one and Bear McCreary assists. The twinkling bells of Six's theme may seem repetitious at first, but the seeds of BSG's sounds can be found here.
Season One
Great stuff, without question. "Passacaglia" and "Shape of Things to Come" are truly beautiful.
Season Two
Thanks to the arrival of Pegasus and the attack on the Resurrection Ship, the action drums of this album are fantastic.
Philip Glass' "Metamorphosis One"
Thanks to Starbuck's dad, I had to buy this. A truly great piece. Without it, my Season Two sounds empty.
Razor/The Plan
Since these are both Season Two based movies, I placed the tracks here. "Apocalypse" kicks ass.
As far as watching The Plan (I'm assuming you already saw Razor), I would suggest waiting until you watch the series for a second time. Pop it in right after the scene in "Lay Down Your Burdens" wherein in Roslin passes sentence on the duplicate Cylons in the brig.
Season Three
The lead up to "Watchtower" is magnificent and I always crank the volume for the New Caprica action sequences.
Season Four
With "Watchtower" fully revealed, it gets used to great lengths. Includes the full, haunting version of Gaeta's song. Plus, "Kara Remembers" floors me every time and the full orchestral sounds of "Daybreak" are worth rattling the speakers.
Jimi Hendrix - "All Along the Watchtower"
Of course, I have to cap off the BSG experience with Hendrix's version. I mean, c'mon.
Caprica pilot
Lastly, for completeness' sake, I have this one in the playlist, too. I only hope they can release the rest of Bear's great work on this show in the future.
As for watching Caprica, I do recommend it. It starts slow, no question, but it picks up in the last six or so episodes and by the end, you'll be cursing SyFy's name (yet again) for not giving the show another season.
Now if only they'd release a Blu-ray of the series ...
See that's the thing -- I kind of love all of it, even the so-called "crap" stuff from the decade. I love the rock stuff and the disco stuff and the soul stuff. All of it. (well, mostly)
For lesser-known soul stuff, I like the What It Is! box set. And there's some amazing stuff in the 70s-era part of the Quincy Jones box set. But as far as straight-up groups, Earth Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone are where it's at for me.
Rock stuff, I have a soft spot in my heart for Big Star, but I'll take the more popular stuff, as well, like Bowie and Zeppelin and former Beatles' solo stuff, or even the so-called "lighter" Doobies or Steely Dan. And goddam if Loggins & Messina's "Sittin' In" isn't just the most blissful. And holy crap, of course there's Harry Nilsson and his entire catalogue.
But the thing I love most about the 70s is discovering all these bands that are relatively under the radar these days, or groups that artists were in before they got big. Relatively recent discoveries for me include the band Lake and Klaatu and Brian Protheroe.
But I'm honestly equally happy putting on the 1970s station and listening to Brandy or Amie or Angie Baby or pretty much whatever.
EDIT: cleaned up some links
Back in Black Good choice!
PP444 is fine to start with. Next step up is the ART DJ Pre II $67.
RCA cable from turntable to the phono preamp should be limited to 3 or 4 feet. From the phono preamp to an amp or powered speakers can be longer.
The cleaning kit you picked out, the brush is just for light everyday dry dusting. The small cleaning solution bottle won't do anything of value. For cleaning records that need it you need to do full wet cleaning. If not buying a Spin Clean, DIY How to clean vinyl records and make your own cleaning solution • Best way to clean your vinyl records. It is also the most economical! • DIY record cleaning • How to clean Vinyl • Wet and Vacuum Clean a Record On the Cheap. Then put your vinyl in new anti-static inner sleeves.
Considered spending more on speakers and buying stands lager or building your own or use something make shift until you buy stands.
Edifier R980T are designed as computer speakers. No remote and the volume control on the back. Consider Edifier R1280DB $99 that have a side volume control and a remote.
Or lower cost 6-1/2" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair and Mini Amp Bundle $49.
Better speakers and mini amp than the $49 bundle: Dayton Audio B652-AIR 6-1/2" Speakers with AMT Tweeter $40+ FX-Audio FX252A Amp $33 + Speaker Wire and 4 Ways to Strip Wire. Optional 4-Way AV Switch RCA if you want to add another audio source.

When I was 12, I bought this album. It had a Sgt. Pepper's cover on it. I can honestly say that I really do enjoy the Hendrix version way more than the beatles.
I paid 88 dollars for that box set. It was awesome. Catfish blues and the all instrumental version of Electric ladyland are awesome. Amazing songs.
Great Gig in the Sky's voice solo has artifacting even with MP3s. Also symbol crashes chirp in any FFT-based lossy audio compression.
For the best experience - might I recommend DSotM in 5.1? https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Side-Moon-30th-Anniversary/dp/B00008CLOA Comes in SACD and DVD Audio.
James Guthrie remastered it from the original studio tapes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Side_of_the_Moon He's also remastered several other classics in 5.1 - all excellent.
There are a few notable changes:
- On The Run - footsteps go AROUND you
- Gig in the Sky - "if you can hear, this you're dying" is more audible
- Closing base drum (aka. heart beat) - the dub-over of Beatles Ticket to Ride is no longer audible.
I haven't listened to many full albums because I'm just getting into the amazing run of singles released in the latter half of the 70s, so if you're looking for a compilation, try No Thanks! for 100 of the necessary stuff. Such a fertile period, masses upon masses of kids playing with matches... to very good results of course.
I also love:
The Clash - London Calling (obvs)
Television - Marquee Moon (does this even count?)
Stooges - Raw Power (PLAY IT FUCKING LOUD)
Gang of Four - Entertainment! (a dance-off at your own personal shame banquet)
Wire - Pink Flag (so complex, "Ramones went to art school" etc.)
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (bleak but super groovy)
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (so much fun, but also very sad and lonely)

Spotify premium or tickets to a concert would be most appreciated by me! Vinyl records are also always nice, provided the person giving them has good taste. DVD versions of live shows are awesome gifts: Led Zeppelin's two-disc set) with a bunch of performances is my favorite. I also really love Shut Up and Play the Hits; it's less guitar heavy, but it comes with a documentary about the band's last show as well as the show itself.
Hmmm there are these two box sets but they're both 4 discs. Both are all previously unreleased takes, some finished and some rough takes and live songs. These are exactly what you want but idk any 10 disc sets. Happy holidays and happy hendrixing!

Happy Birthday Kramdiw !!
This from your wishlist is Awesome!! and I like the beer pong shirt. Lol. Shirt..
I get that entirely. Last time I checked, the mono box set on US Amazon was $100 for CD alone, and even worse for vinyl collectors. I haven't even seen one copy of the mono CD's anywhere, and I've even drove around my area looking.
That said, it definitely seems like the 2017 master of Pepper is looking like an actually perfect remix. If they restore the mono She's Leaving Home pitch and fix some minor effects the stereo screwed up from the original like the absence of some Reprise crowd SFX, Good Morning transition, etc, it might be my favorite version of the album.
I love Steven Wilson's King Crimson 5.1 remixes.
Pink Floyd's 30th Anniversary SACD of "Dark Side of the Moon" is the best 5.1 mixed album I've ever heard.
Also, NIN "Downward Spiral" is great.
I'm glad you guys liked this. Early Led Zeppelin is some of the best stuff ever. I only said downvote away because I figured the hivemind didn't want this kind of metal. For those of you that do, I highly encourage you to watch this.
I would recommend listening to this compilation and then explore the discographies of whatever bands on it you like the most:
No Thanks! The 70s Punk Rebellion
That covers all the standard essentials of early punk. Here's a couple other favorite comps of mine:
Good Vibrations: The Punk Singles Collection (best punk/powerpop singles from Irish label Good Vibrations)
Killed By Death (obscure 70s/80s punk)

|name|Warren Zevon|
|about artist|Warren William Zevon (January 24, 1947 - September 7, 2003) was an American rock singer-songwriter and musician noted for including his unique and sometimes sardonic opinions of life in his musical lyrics, composing songs that were sometimes humorous and often had political or historical themes. Zevon's work has often been praised by well-known musicians, including Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. ([more on last.fm](http://www.last.fm/music/Warren Zevon))|

I'm really tired of this argument over piracy and lack of physical album sales. Here's why: it doesn't distinguish between a worthwhile purchase and some mass produced cheap CDs in a terrible little case.
It isn't that I don't want to not buy music, it's that I don't want to pay for bad art.
If you stick a crappy, generic, gaudy, burned-DVD on a store shelf in a clear jewel case with jotted, chicken-scratch words that read "Beatles Discography (2009 Remaster)," I am not going to pay money for it. It could be identical in every single way to the box set in terms of quality and quantity. The music would be the same, but I would never, ever buy the DVD. Because it's worthless. Because it's junk.
So here's my point. We don't buy CDs anymore because most CDs are not worth owning. They don't enhance the music, they don't look particularly nice, and they're extremely overpriced. They're not a viable product.
And now, because we have options that make more sense as consumers, we're obviously using them. When I can get online and download an album for free, in 5 minutes, in the same exact quality as I'd get from a CD, why would I honestly want to do anything else?
I can find more albums in higher quality and faster download speeds off of damn near any bittorrent site than I can with iTunes, and the better option is also free.
We have all been raised as consumers, by consumers, in a product-driven world. How else are we supposed to react when given such options? The very forces that brought record labels and physical music sales to power is now bringing them down, and the fall is inevitable.
Until we are presented with a real product that is worth the price tag, we will continue to choose the best option for ourselves. I have absolutely no sympathy for artists that don't create art.
I agree that Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions is brilliant, and a must-have for Jimi fans. But the Who Knows tracks seem only to be on bootlegs. Too bad! Take 1-5: 5:01 ---Take 6: 3:08 --- Take 7: 10:56.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set has some good stuff, too. As does South Saturn Delta. If you have those, plus the ones mentioned at the top (plus Cry Of Love and Rainbow Bridge, although almost all of them is on First Rays...) you have the studio recordings covered reasonably well. The live recordings, however, are a whole 'nother matter. Deserving of a second post, definitely.
Two of my favorites are Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms and Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense. Great music and fantastic recordings!
Other good ones include MTV Unplugged: 10,000 Maniacs and Leonard Cohen: Live in London.
I'm in Canada so I don't know if that counts but I would love A Night of Queen!
The Queen item on my wishlist would be this mug as Daenerys is the true Queen of Westeros.
(/u/scandalousblanche did you see this contest yet?)
Thank you for your reply.
Additional question; which is the better version of the debut album, this or this?
I ask since sometimes, people have issues with remasters of certain albums and prefer the original.
Thanks again
I'm sorry but we'll need you to turn in your Rush fan card for not remembering the title of a classic like "The Spirit of Radio". :)

Symphonic Pink Floyd is amazing:
Us & Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays the Hits of Pink Floyd
This is awesome also: Piano Tribute to Pink Floyd
Here's a sample of what's on the Led Zeppelin DVD.

The Royal Albert Hall footage is my favorite concert of all time. The DVD also includes Madison Square Garden which is mostly IV and Houses, and Earls Court which is an acoustic set.

Audio wise, look up the album How the West Was Won. Contains most of the songs on the DVD and is considered its companion piece.
I like to take this surf music compilation when I'm beaching: http://www.amazon.com/Cowabunga-The-Surf-Various-Artists/dp/B0000033S4 Pretty much any tunes from that set would be a good fit for sun & surf - if you're into reverbrant surf music.
I think it depends a tremendous amount on the kind of music you're going to be mixing. Here are some of my go-to choices:
Blind Boys of Alabama: Spirit of the Century
Steely Dan: Gaucho (link is to the 96khz/24 bit FLAC release)
Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms
Thomas Dolby: Aliens Ate My Buick
BB King: Blues Summit
And last but of course never least, Michael Jackson's Thriller
Assuming you don't already own it, a tool like Smaart and a reference mic would be very useful to you.
Nice, thanks, this one has the pre-order link, and only £18.99 from Amazon.

Saved you a click.
The 4 disc compilation box set No Thanks! The 70s Punk Rebellion is an awesome place to start. I was already a little bit into punk, but this set introduced me to what are now some of my favorite bands and artists.
The top review of the Beatles Mono Box Set on Amazon gives an excellent rundown/review of each album in stereo vs. mono.
Link TL;DR: "Your core, oddly enough, should be the mono box set. Augment this with the stereo Hard Day's Night, The Beatles For Sale, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles, Abbey Road, Let It Be and stereo Past Masters."
Yes. It looks like this: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002P5U.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
The nude cover is way better.
Not sure if you are looking for an early pressing or trying to find this album only in the wild but amazon is selling a fantastic pressing of this album for less than $10.
Depends. On vinyl? CD? They have box sets available for each.

Vinyl: https://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Stereo-Vinyl-Box-Set/dp/B0041KVW2K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506552798&sr=8-1&keywords=the+beatles+box+set+vinyl
If you're looking for original pressings then tough shit. Hopefully this girl isn't tricking you, otherwise good luck, those box sets are pricey.
I like the stuff on this box set It has the best version of Room Full of Mirrors IMO.
I personally prefer the 2004 'Original Master Edition' mostly because it was the first one I hear. I don't think the 2009 stereo mix really adds much, although it is a somewhat interesting companion piece.
So if you don't yet have a copy of the debut I would recommend this one for sure. Having said that, since the other edition includes the 2004 mix as well as the 2009 one you can't go too far wrong.
London Philharmonic: Us and Them
I'm a big Pink Floyd fan also, and I love this album. It's not really branching out, but I think you'll like it.
"Cowabunga! The Surf Box Set" and "Surf Age Nuggets" have some really great songs on them. With Nuggets getting pretty gritty and garagey. Some of the bands are terrible, like you can tell they picked up instruments a few months ago as they go through a guitar scale... but some of the songs are really special. The thing is that there aren't too many super complete albums from the same bands since there are so many flashes in the pan, but see what you think.
BEST ALBUM EVER!
Us & Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd
Upvoting because someone else is honest to admit Phillip Glass is monotonously repetitive.
Nice list BTW !
And for something completely different: Us and Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd by London Philharmonic Orchestra http://www.amazon.com/Us-Them-Symphonic-Pink-Floyd/dp/B0000040UZ/
Something big and flat. The rest depends on personal preference and what type of mouse you have (my laser mouse has difficulty with reflective glossy solid white) Cardboard works, but I use one of these granted, mine was £1 from a charity shop
Cowabunga: The Surf Box. Click on the 'see all tracks' for some ideas. This is a good set if you're throwing a surf themed party.
David Gilmour's Remember That Night is a pretty cool concert if you haven't seen it.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ♫ The Symphonic Pink Floyd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBGeex66_t8
https://www.amazon.co.uk/London-Philharmonic-Orchestra-plays-music/dp/B0000040UZ and that also looks like a Roger Dean cover.
All quite interesting to add to the collection.

how familiar are you with the beatles? I'd say get their box set instead. Trust me, you want all the art and what not that comes with it.

The Beatles Box Set on Amazon: $130
The Beatles Box Set on iTunes: $149
The Beatles Box Set on the most popular music tracker, in every format imaginable including 24-bit flac... literally priceless.
Put in track numbers for each disc, disc numbers for the set, and check the box that says "Part of a compilation" for each song. Selecting multiple and editing the common info is your friend.
Edit: Don't forget to put the total number of tracks per disc (x of __) and same for the discs in the set (y of 3).

I mostly buy from amazon and never had anything damaged or warped, they pack it quite well

Both are sweet... :)
Is this the version you are referring to?
Going to order this on your recommendation - I've been holding off for a while. I want to make sure I get the right thing.
The mono box set, which sounds better, is also available for the same price.
Yea, the mono collection is the one I am going to get. I read somewhere that the mono sounds way better (engadget or gizmodo or somewhere).
This is the one I was looking at, probably get another copy for my Dad too.
John Mayer bluray http://www.amazon.com/John-Mayer-Where-Angeles-Blu-ray/dp/B0019HQIFE/ref=sr_1_1_bnp_1_blu?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1411881733&sr=1-1&keywords=John+Mayer

bought that one for my mother 2 years ago. I recommend it if you are going for CD.
Yep, 30th anniversary edition!
It makes up the bulk of disc 1 of this package: Led Zeppelin - DVD
Essential purchase for any Led Zeppelin fan.
If you're gonna do that, I'd just shell out the extra $38 to make sure you're getting a legit copy.
The Beatles in Mono (The Complete Mono Recordings) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002BSHXJA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wT0dzbJF8EE33
I remember reading that In The Court Of The Crimson King was mastered on a tape deck with poorly aligned heads, this caused the high frequencies to be messed up. There was some attempt at the time to minimise it. Then one of the original masters got lost for decades.
Robert Fripp finally found it and a digital remaster was released some years back in which they were able to digitally correct most of the issues.
I believe the The Original Master Edition is the first pressing of the digitally remastered CD (code DGM0501) amazon link
It is also coded with the HDCD audio codec which gives higher fidelity audio if played through Windows Media player or CD player/audio player with the correct decoder. wiki
Not really. The list price is $250 but Amazon sells it for $129.99.
I already have most of these albums, so I won't probably get the box set. But if I were to buy it, paying an extra 20 bucks so I don't have to rip all the the CD's and the DVD to load this into my computer, I'd think about it.
Exactly. Great live stuff, but the fantasy footage is awful.
Not to get all Led Zeppelin nerdy on you, but they came out with a 2 DVD set of live sets from different eras of their career that is awesome.
http://www.amazon.com/Led-Zeppelin-Robert-Plant/dp/B00008PX8P
Unfortunately, it's not 8.99 and I don't think they released it in blu-ray.

14 CDs for $130. I can't tell you how much the same 14 albums would cost on iTunes because I uninstalled it six months ago.
Here, now you don't have to worry about it. http://www.amazon.com/The-Beatles-Mono-Box-Set/dp/B002BSHXJA
I just discovered the 17 CD boxed set.
Apparently it is so popular, Amazon has had to stop selling it, which is puzzling, because they never had it in the first place. It was only available for pre-order.
Cool video on the Abbey Road page

Not downplaying the grandiose that is Dark Side of the Moon, but you should check out the Us & Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd.

£130 = $206
I beg to differ.
here’s a link to the boxed CD set of the Beatles. gl

This guy is right. Pick up this if you want to hear the Beatles properly: http://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Mono-Box-Set/dp/B002BSHXJA
Edit - that's also why some of the Beatles stereo mixes have wild use of stereo where things will swing wildly from one side to the other for no apparent reason - it was the studio engineers more or less just playing around without the artists.
