This is a great movie about the man behind the Granny glasses. It has home videos. Interviews with Cynthia, Yoko, Julian, Sean, and many others. This is a great movie about John. Any book on amazon rated highly should be good.LINK http://www.amazon.com/Imagine-John-Lennon-Deluxe-Edition/dp/B000AYELY2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1348931424&sr=8-8&keywords=john+lennon Never heard of this, but if you want something really raw get this. Sounds amazing by the way. I'll have to get it some day. LINKhttp://www.amazon.com/The-John-Lennon-Letters/dp/0316200808/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1348931424&sr=8-10&keywords=john+lennon
I don't think I've ever seen a documentary about Paul. But I found this. It has music videos, live performances, narration by Paul, interviews. Read the description on amazon for more details. This is something that I would love to get. LINK http://www.amazon.com/The-McCartney-Years-Paul/dp/B000VRJ37I/ref=sr_1_26?ie=UTF8&qid=1348931817&sr=8-26&keywords=paul+mccartney
The top 3 on an amazon search of Paul Mccartney books look decent if you want to read about Paul.

For George I would highly recommend George Harrison: Living In The Material World. I have watched most of it, and it is amazing. I still need to get a copy of it myself. On amazon there are a few books that look good. I'll leave you to decide on one. LINKhttp://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=george+harrison+book&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ageorge+harrison+book
Ringo doesn't have a lot out there to read or watch about him but I Found some good stuff. This looks really cool and I would love to get one for myself. LINKhttp://www.amazon.com/Postcards-Boys-Ringo-Starr/dp/B000A176RO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348932649&sr=8-1&keywords=ringo+starr+book
You'll have to research more to find a good biography on Ringo.
There you go. I hope this helps a lot. I know I'll be picking this stuff up a some point.
My favorite Yes album is Relayer, so I'd definitely get that one next. I know most people hate Tormato and Drama, but I happen to like them both quite a bit. I basically like everything Yes from 1969-1983.
Another one that gets overlooked in Yes' catalog is the debut. That album is a lot jazzier (due to Peter Banks' guitar work), and the songwriting is a bit less prog-oriented, but awesome nonetheless.
With King Crimson, I'd basically recommend everything else (I'm a fanboy; bite me, haha). Most importantly, I'd go for Discipline and In the Wake first.
Also, pick up as many live albums as you can from KC. They were always a very interesting live act. The Larks' Tongues and Red lineup were probably the best out of the bunch in regards to live performance, but the 80's lineup weren't slackers by any means.
Here's a good place to start with live albums:
[Absent Lovers: Live in Montreal 1984]
The Collectable King Crimson, Volume 1 (Live at Mainz; Live in Asbury Park)
Live at Summit Studios March 12, 1972
These are two of my favorite bands, and I'm probably a little biased in my recommendations, but this should be enough for someone relatively new to them to be content.
Great question!
Rocksmith is ok. I have it, but it, like any lesson plan, is dependent on the player's dedication, and the game seems to fudge enough to make you feel like you're doing great when you know you screwed things up (that's my experience, anyway).
Scott's Bass Lessons is the bass player's equivalent of Justin's lessons, plus some. It's not free, but it is worth it. Plus, a ton of content can be found outside the pay model - make YouTube your friend.
A free resource - started just this month - is Andy Irvine's Daily Funk Club. Andy's a great guy and good teacher. Lots of energy there.
Also, for inspiration alone, get him Victor Wooten's dvd "Groove Workshop" (also at Amazon) and his book (or audiobook - or both!) "The Music Lesson."
Welcome to the bass!

Why yes, I am a bot. I've been requested to comment in this subreddit.
Please let me know if I made a mistake!
Apostrophe / Over-Nite Sensation. Those are two albums (often sold as one) that were recorded in the same sessions. Over-nite hit #32 on Billboard Pop Charts in 1973, and Apostrophe hit #10 in 1974. They're his best-selling albums, and for good reason: accessible rock beats, strong guitar solos, and... I dunno. They're definitely awesome, I say this as a >20-year fan.
And it's a safe bet that if you don't hear a single thing on there that you like, the chances are you good you can turn around and move on to something else! :) So at the very least, it'll be an efficient way to figure out if you don't like his music.
Perhaps that's an interesting question to discuss: if someone hated Apostrophe/Over-nite, what album(s) would you recommend they try instead?
Just want to echo that 30 minutes a day is more than enough. Of that time, I would spend 10 minutes on rudiments and the rest on whatever you want.
>What all will I need to get started? Practice pad, sticks, kit, metronome?
If you buy an electronic kit, I wouldn't worry about practice pads. I'd recommend picking up Stick Control, learning the rudiments, and an introductory book such as Fast Track or Tommy Igoe's beginner DVD. Once you feel more comfortable, I'd recommend picking up Groove Essentials and New Breed.
For stick, I generally recommend starting with Vic Firth 5B hickory sticks. Of all the sticks I've tried, those are the most absolutely average. Weight, balance, size, etc. From there you can move into thinner (5A, 7A) or thicker (2B) as you want, but 5B is a good starting place, hickory is the best wood to learn with (and play with forever, imo, but that's debatable), and Vic Firth is fairly consistent.
Vic Firth's stick size comparisons. The standard sizes used by the majority of drummers, from smallest to largest, are 7A, 5A, 5B, 2B. Everything else is just incredibly minor tweaking that some people like.
I can't praise Can highly enough, they're easily one of my favorite groups. There are plenty of excellent krautrock bands, but Can takes the cake from me. I first found out about Can when I was a huge Mars Volta nut and Damo Suzuki/Omar Rodriguez Lopez put out Please Heat This Eventually. I saw it in a record store, noticed Omar's name and immediately snagged it. I pulled the milky blue vinyl out of the sleeve, placed it on my turntable, and was blown way. Ever since, Can has been one of my favorites.
My favorite Can album always changes. Usually it's Ege Bamyasi, sometimes Tago Mago, other times Future Days. Currently, it's Future Days...based on an lsd experience over the weekend wherein I melted into a puddle on the couch listening to Future Days front to back a couple times over. Highly recommended.
I also highly recommend checking out this Can DVD. Also had another tripped out experience while watching this, and while the DVD is a bit more intense (at times overwhelmingly so) it's a must see if you're a fan.
First...
>What is a good groove bpm?
There isn't a single reasonable tempo (40-220, maybe) where you can't groove. It takes good note placement to groove, and you can have good note placement at any tempo.
Second, you would be doing yourself a huge favor by looking up Scott's Bass Lessons and watching his videos on groove, as well as Victor Wooten's Groove Workshop.
Third, you won't be able to create any type of groove if you don't have good timing or if you don't know how to play different note values.
I'm basing it off this guide:
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-Mixtape-Awesome-Mix-Vol-1-from-Guard/?ALLSTEPS
The tapes are TDK CDing2 tapes. You'll want to go with a 60 minute probably, but they did make one that was 46 minutes long:
http://cdn.instructables.com/FXG/4KFN/I4IWVLUW/FXG4KFNI4IWVLUW.LARGE.jpg
The soundtrack with Spirit In The Sky included is 44 minutes and 36 seconds, so it would work perfectly if you can find them. Glancing around eBay they seem hard to find.
Cosmic Mix isn't based on anything, I don't think you even see it fully in the show. That image is some promotional stuff for the physical release I think and is different than the tape you get if you buy it new. Chances are if the tape was real it would also be on some form of TDK CDing2.
https://www.amazon.com/Marvels-Guardians-Galaxy-Cosmic-Cassette/dp/B016WGFPRS
If they were based on a real label it would probably be fairly hard to find. Cosmic Mix seems to just be the Awesome Mix label but purple instead of orange. You could re-create the labels in Photoshop/GIMP/Paint.net/Paint/Word/Anything from screen grabs of the movie if you wanted to. If not, there's a good PSD version of the label here (nearly 30MB!):
http://www.instructables.com/files/orig/FH1/2I24/I1MQ4BVP/FH12I24I1MQ4BVP.psd
To make it the Cosmic Mix, replace orange with purple.
These are meant to be printed on Avery 5444 labels. The alternative is to print onto 8.5" x 11" paper and attach the labels with a spray on adhesive. This is good if you want to weather it or whatnot.
So to a beginner bassist I would recommend two different study materials.
First buy this DVD, Groove Workshop. It's basically a lecture with exercises on the different components of music as it relates to the bass. One of the largest take-aways is that the notes you play are WAY less important than how you play them. They don't have the clip on youtube, but here is him doing something similar live. On the DVD it's just incredibly well done. He lists all the notes in a G major scale, then only plays the "wrong notes" (notes not in the scale) as Wellington lays down a chordal pattern in G. He then switches to playing in G major and the moment he does this, the G major sounds terrible. When he was playing out of key it was aesthetically pleasing, but when he switches to in key he changes how he's playing and it sounds more discordant.
Second, buy this book on building walking basslines. It's a great introduction to walking bass lines. The point here isn't to remember the notes, but rather the patterns and the feel of "walking".
But for more immediate tips do this. Play the root on the kick, the 5th on the snare, and embellish with the octave and 7th in time with the drummer's fills. You can move up to the 5th by hitting the 4th and down from the 7th with stops along the way at the 6th and the 3rd. If you really want to outline the chords play the root 3rd 5th, but be warned this sounds tired very fast.
The above is just my opinion and is provided merely as a quick outline to start getting the feel of moving around a chord.

> On October 30th, 1992, Nirvana were booked to play a major show in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They were so big at that point in time that they just about sold-out José Amalfitani Stadium, which can hold nearly fifty thousand people. Prior to their set, Kurt Cobain witnessed the negative reception their hand picked opening act received, and was so incensed that he considered canceling the gig. Nirvana ultimately did perform that night, but they were sloppy and their set-list was more than a little unusual, as they purposely incorporated rare songs from their catalogue that they knew most of the audience wouldn’t be familiar with, including a couple of unreleased numbers. It ended up being one of their oddest shows, and it was all captured on videotape by a professional film crew.
>
> Kurt later shared his memories of the gig:
>
> > “When we played Buenos Aires, we brought this all-girl band over from Portland called Calamity Jane,” Kurt recalled. “During their entire set, the whole audience—it was a huge show with like sixty thousand people—was throwing money and everything out of their pockets, mud and rocks, just pelting them. Eventually the girls stormed off crying. It was terrible, one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, such a mass of sexism all at once. Krist, knowing my attitude about things like that, tried to talk me out of at least setting myself on fire or refusing to play. We ended up having fun, laughing at them (the audience). Before every song, I’d play the intro to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and then stop. They didn’t realize that we were protesting against what they’d done. We played for about forty minutes, and most of the songs were off Incesticide, so they didn’t recognize anything. We wound up playing the secret noise song (‘Endless, Nameless’) that’s at the end of Nevermind, and because we were so in a rage and were just so pissed off about this whole situation, that song and whole set were one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.” (from Nirvana: The Chosen RejectsImage)
>
>
> Kurt Cobain in Buenos Aires
> Kurt in Buenos Aires
>
> If you watch the show (which is embedded below), you’ll realize that Kurt was misremembering or embellishing a bit here and there. While they did unearth a handful of rarities from their odds-n-ends collection IncesticideImage (which hadn’t been released yet), as well as “All Apologies” (it later turned up on In UteroImage), they also played most of NevermindImage (but not “Teen Spirit,” which they teased before two songs), and a few of the highlights from BleachImage. One thing Kurt failed to mention that they most certainly did do to annoy the crowd, was open with a strange, jam-like number that those in attendance had definitely never heard before.
>
> Unavailable on any of Nirvana’s archival releases and believed to have been performed at just this show, the track has come to be known by the most-excellent of titles, “Nobody Knows I’m New Wave”—though there is no documentation available to confirm its validity. The go-to source for Nirvana bootleg info, Live Nirvana, believes it is just a jam, largely due to official biographer Michael Azerrad’s assessment in his book, Come As You Are: The Story of NirvanaImage:
>
> > “The first thing they played was an improvised jam, which deteriorated into a fifteen minute fest from Kurt, with breaks when he would stop to glare at the crowd.”
>
> The circulating video of the show begins with “Nobody Knows I’m New Wave,” but lasts less than three minutes, so it’s difficult to know what Azerrad is referring to. Does the tape begin twelve-plus minutes after their set started? Or has Azerrad himself embellished or misremembered the event?
>
> Though the majority of the lyrics were probably made up on the spot (including “I promise to shit on your head”; “I’m new wave/I’m old school”) and the racket they’re generating collapses after just a couple of minutes, structurally it does have a chorus, which makes me think it was somewhat worked out beforehand. Either way, this isn’t the sort of track most groups would start a stadium concert with.
>
> In Come As You Are, Azerrad also notes that the band “had hardly practiced, their enthusiasm was low, and they played badly.” Regardless, there are some great moments, like the especially heavy version of “In Bloom” (though Kurt messes up a lot); when Dave Grohl brings a toy drum kit to the front of the stage for “Polly” (and Kurt cracks a smile); the aforementioned catharsis that is “Endless, Nameless”; and the intriguing opener. Is it a song or just a jam to piss-off the Argentineans? You decide.

This is an interesting question, and I think illustrates a certain bias in the thought process of music educators in the west more than anything. Far from being unquantifiable, rhythm and melody have been studied very deliberately in India, Africa, and the Middle-East, in the much the same manner as we study harmony so intensively. Indian music in particular, is very precise in its quantifying of tala (rhythmic cycles/time) and raga (melodic patterns and modes), with hundreds of specific varieties of each, and a complex system for deriving meaning from them. In some ways this is the major differentiator in musical thinking between east/west, harmonic thinking tends to demand so much attention that it steals the focus from other more immediate elements of musical form.
I'm not sure if this provides much of an answer to your question. In practical terms, you need to study harmony to understand what's been happening in western music over the past 300 years or so. Harmony is not the entirety of music or your training as a musician, just an important element of it that requires a lot of knowledge and practice.
This is an enlightening guide to developing other areas of your musicianship aside from harmony:

Dave is widely known in the rock community for side projects and surprises. In LA a few years ago I was witness to the Foos bringing out Stewart Copeland to come jam night one, and had Lemmy Kilmister play with them night two.
I'm honestly surprised people aren't more familiar with this- and with the fact that Taylor Hawkins can sing. Doesn't anyone own In Your Honor? A side note- their acoustic concert is a whole other kind of amazing- check out Skin and Bones DVD
If the sound has changed, then it's probably due to the room that you have set up in. Believe it or not, it will make a difference. For example, if your friend had it set up in a practice room, then you have brought it home and set it up in the garage, it will definitely not sound the way that it did when you first played it.
Tommy Igoe has a great DVD out that walks you through the basics of drum kit, including setting up. http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Started-Drums-Featuring-Tommy/dp/B00005UV69
I don't have the USB drive, but I have looked into it before.
To answer your Qs. The USB drive has the following albums
Please Please Me
With The Beatles
Hard Day's Night
Beatles For Sale
Help
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles (White Album)
Yellow Submarine
Let It Be
Abbey Road
Past Masters I & II
The tracks are FLAC and don't have DRM, so yeah they are transferrable.
Does it work on 1999ish PCs? Lol, well I'm not sure how the heck a 1999 PC is running reddit (I kid). But yeah, if you download the right media player with the right codecs, then there's no reason it won't play FLAC.

More on the mindset of playing bass than any one specific technique, but I highly recommend Victor Wooten's Groove Workshop or his book The Music Lesson (the audio book version is nice too, narrated by Wooten and features some playing between chapters.)
I'd HIGHLY... HIGHLY... HIGHLY recommend watching Victor Wooten's groove workshop. It completely revolutionized my perspective as a bass guitarist and allowed me to more freely express my musicianship away from being self-conscious about notes. Plus you can listen to some epic Wooten snippets along the way.
https://www.amazon.com/Victor-Wooten-Groove-Workshop/dp/B001DPC4I2
You'll likely be convinced by the end of it that although notes are important to a degree, as a bassist keeping the GROOVE is Priority A. And groove isn't limited to 12 notes.
Maybe off topic, but I just had an idea. I would like to see them put out a high quality atdi version of this. Have consecutive shows where each night is dedicated to an album. Record it in high quality then let the name die. Move on. If these fellows want to create new music together they merely have to pick a different name. I think this is where I'm leaning now. I would love to suggest this to them, but who the hell am I? So long as these guys (atdi members) are happy, I s'pose I am too.
edit: added words that fell off my screen.
Singlehandedly the best advice for teaching / learning an instrument I've ever seen. It's applicable even if you don't play bass: http://www.amazon.com/Victor-Wooten-Groove-Workshop/dp/B001DPC4I2
I'd start with easy songs she likes and go from there. Keep it uncomplicated.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
It's available for pre-order on some websites already. Not sure where you're located but Amazon seems to have the best price from what we have seen so far.

The nice thing about Amazon is you can usually just change .com to whatever your local site is in the URL to get the same product on your regional site. I did that to find it on Amazon Canada last night.
Say what?! I'm located in Germany and just found the Amazon pre-order page for the physical copy. Now I have questions:
http://www.amazon.com/Frank-Zappa-Dub-Room-Special/dp/B000BC8SW4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1290573037&sr=8-6
it combines shows from 74 and 81 , it is official , and being a huge zappa fan myself , it is the one of 5 zappa dvds that gets the most play in my house
You could buy the dvd or bluray. I can highly recommend it. =)

dude please get her this. I dont know what your budget is, but if my fiance got me this i think he would tell you the 2 blow jobs a day were worth the money he spent on it :-)
Yeah, it's a track called "Room Service" from "The Dub Room Special" DVD. I think they took all the videos of it off of Youtube, I can't find any of them.
Here's a link to the DVD though, worth checking out the whole thing: https://www.amazon.com/Frank-Zappa-Dub-Room-Special/dp/B000BC8SW4

Canadian here. Hoping someone can confirm this is the “limited edition”. Although it mentions “special packaging” in the header, the description doesn’t list the packaging details like it does for the American version.

That is very much like Victor Wooten's approach to soloing and improv. I would recommend both his book and DVD
If you can find the FLAC releases, they are the best version. Still available
The tapes are:
Peppermint Tea by Rest You Sleeping Giant
Cosmic Mix Vol.1, the Guardians of the Galaxy tv show soundtrack
This Means War by Volkor X
Also got a CD of the Badass Inc. EP and some stickers from Volkor as a surprise. Those were definitely not in the description on bandcamp lol

Someone pointed out it's back on Amazon this morning so I reckon it's safe to assume more will be incoming.
Eric Clapton's Crossroads Music Festival 2007 is superb with an enormous set list and many big names. And I know some may not like John Mayer, but his dvd Where The Light Is is exceptional! 3 different sets including solo acoustic, the john mayer trio (john's blues-rock band), and finally him and his main band.
Yes. It’s legit. Not sure why some of you are seeing Bieber referenced in the link. I’ve already received my confirmation email from Amazon. - Fear Inoculum Amazon Pre-Order

Hell yeah. There is a reason why a lot of metal guitarists also get into jazz (eg, Marty Friedman).
Here are my recommendations:
The Advancing Guitarist
You'll need to learn how to read musical notation for this, but it's worth it.
Victor Wooten: Groove Workshop
It's a bass video and it's not even about technique, in particular. But it's filled with incredibly insightful advice for musicians of any kind. Highly recommended.

Not quite, mate. Where's your USB Apple?
In all seriousness though, nice collection. I only have the Stereo CDs and the USB apple (since I found one for cheap.) Still need to get the Mono albums in some form (although I probably won't get the new vinyl box, since it's quite expensive and I'll probably just get one or two albums individually.)

I'm not 100% sure they ever released the CD's separately from the box set (they may have though).
You can find the box set on Amazon if you're willing to drop over 200 bucks for it. Alternatively, the standalone DVD set is on Amazon for 14 bucks:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001R0KHDW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ERJXBb5J6AY52
You could always rip the DVD audio tracks and chop them up with Audacity or something like that. That would also get you the full version of Good Apollo (they cut some of the jams on the official CD release). Though it also means 21:13 gets cut off at the end.

One thing that helped me get over that fear was this video right here:
