I have been on somewhat of a quest for the perfect black chelsea boots as well. Before I knew anything about shoes or leather, I had a pair of <$100 Johnston and Murphy black chelsea boots. They were comfortable but really cheap leather and glued rubber soles.

I've since upgraded to the Allen Edmond's Haight, which they don't make anymore. I am pretty dissapointed with these. They fit weird. I'm a 9.5D in all other standard AE shoes, but these fit snug at a 9, loose at a 9.5. I went with the 9 and it's sometimes too small. The leather feels not as nice as other AE calfskin. I so thoroughly dislike them that I'm looking to sell them actually. I've probably only worn them a handful of times. The sole and build quality is excellent, though.

What I tried on around then, and what I wished I would've bought, is the 1000 Mile Montague chelsea boot in predator leather. That boot was so damn comfortable. At the time I tried them on I didn't want to spend that much as I had just bought original 1000 miles at full retail, and also thought I wanted dressier looking leather, whereas the predator leather was definitely more casual. I was wrong on both counts and ended up paying near retail for the AR Haight a few weeks later anyway, and they don't look great with jeans being waxy black calf. (I'm also 4 pairs deep of various 1Ks at this point, thanks in no small part to this sub!)

If you can find the Montague in black (they definitely used to make them in black) I would go for those. Also PM me if you're interested in the 9.0D Haights. The pointier toe is definitely sharp looking, I just haven't fallen in love with them. I would be willing to sell them pretty cheap.

All right, I found two options for you in the men's section, since like /u/ryojiin said they do tend to fit a little wider in general. Also, biker boots marketed to men usually seem to be decent quality rather than fashion boots (and the thoughts I have on THAT is a whole different post...sigh.)

  • These boots seem to fit wide on men so they should hopefully fit. It's near the top of your budget, but that can't really be helped in your case. (Wider foot, somewhat waterproof, decent quality.) It's a good, basic style though, should fit in with almost any outfit.

  • These are legit work/combat boots, and a few of the reviews mention good waterproofing, so I would give these a shot. Middle of your budget, but not as versatile as the biker boots IMO.

I'm sorry I can't find more for you, but doing Find Fashions for overseas folk is a tiny bit harder, especially as the UK sizes don't come in wide like US shoe sizes. (WTF?)

But if you could, I would pop out to some stores and look for shoes in the men's section. Work boots should be sold year-round, and the fit should generally be wider than women's shoes. Might find something closer to the lower end of your budget in person.

Cole Haan Lunargrand Chelsea Boots

They may not be a traditional chelsea boots but man I freaking love them. Super light, waterproof, and imo they look great.
They're also 25% off with the code "25OFFSHOES" right now.

I have these Timberland Chelsea boots up here in Seattle. They have held up magnificently with all the rain we get all the time and they look great in my opinion. Plus, they are a welcome move away from the LL Beans and Bean Boots every other person here will recommend.

I live in a really snowy area and hate changing boots to shoes in the office (unless I have a big meeting/formal event that day). I'm an engineer so I work at a desk job but it's not too formal.

I got these for brown boots.

They're made in Toronto and have sales now and then (40%) off which brings the price way down. Well made and have a good sole and aren't too chunky while still being good in the snow. I can wear them with khakis, jeans, grey or navy pants.

And I have a pair of black chelsea boots for when I need to wear black instead of brown. They're not as heavy duty as the Roots but do the job. They're like this

Between the black and brown the two do the job, otherwise I change into shoes. I also have a heavy duty pair of boots for shovelling the drive way, hiking etc. Not sure if those are "affordable" to you but if you want something to last a few seasons, $150 isn't that bad.

David Duchovny wears 4 items in Californication:

  1. Black/Dark Brown chelsea boots

  2. Dark wash/raw jeans. Make sure these are DARK indigo. His jeans usually are slim with plenty of stacks.

  3. Black tee shirt. Fitted (not loose).
    OR
  4. Dark dress shirt. Fitted as well.

  5. Dark, charcoal blazer.

You have to understand that these are basic items. Hank Moody looks good in these because Duchovny has a good body, good hair, and he is generally good looking.

Another note on boots....I personally hate lace up boots in Minnesota for day to day use. Like someone said earlier, you'll take them off when you go in someone's home. You'll spend a good 5 minutes taking them off and another 5 putting them on. Find a pair that you can easily slip on and off. I got a pair just like these 2 years ago, they work perfectly

Also find sweaters like these

This brand provides nice warmth without a ton of weight...IMO it allows you to kill a layer or two.

If true, yes that is an amazing deal!

Edit: Downvoted without explanation. How funny. $110 on Amazon.

These Johnston & Murphy boots

I'm looking to replace an aging pair of black Gordon Rush boots I bought at Nordstrom Rack a couple years ago. They were my favorite pair of boot- dressy enough but with a little bit of motorcycle flair. I'd wear them all the time with jeans and a black sweater. Wish I could find another pair just like them...

I've never understood the bias against good men's boots by Ugg or Frye, companies that have been more associated with women's boots. But those do look like middle-school girls' boots. Maybe you can swap for some other cold-weather boots (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM5P6BY/ref=twister_B00Z0NSVV2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) or for better looking boots (https://www.amazon.com/UGG-Australia-Mens-Cavitt-Boot/dp/B01LXU9O9S/ref=pd_sbs_309_10?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01LXU9O9S&pd_rd_r=8CZTA5RQMRXPE6625XRF&pd_rd_w=98PW3&pd_rd_wg=yTl0j&psc=1&refRID=8CZTA5RQMRXPE6625XRF).

Cheap dress shoes/boots for a daily NYC walker? I got about a 30 minute walk to/from work and the train station, with some occasional sprinting (gotta catch that train). Suggestions? I'm looking into some Giorgio Brutini boots, the rubber soles would be nice for the flexibility. Chelsea ones look nice too.

u/jsamhead · 1 pointr/EDC

I've been wearing these for the past 1.5-2 years. Super comfortable and sturdy.

u/BigZw3y · 7 pointsr/LARP

Great boots to add greaves or other boot covers to. Ive burned through at least 4 pairs of these over near a decade having worn pairs daily aside from my larp pairs (i am a mechanic by trade, stuff we use on the floors eats rubber). Great for the price and comes in all kinds of sizes

I have that exact pair. While the leather isn't great, the price is definitely right for figuring out if a pair of chelsea boots is something your really want, which is why I bought them in the first place. Also the shape of the Lands End boots looks good.

Edit: Here are some cheaper options as well. Can't really speak to quality though

Hey guys and gals,

I stumbled on a sale for these brand new frye boots:

https://www.amazon.com/FRYE-Mens-Logan-Chelsea-Boot/dp/B00I3986BK

I did a search and frye boots get a lot of flack, but I ordered these for 100 buck. Do you think it is worth the price (original price where I live is 470)? And second how is the sizing on these. My Red wings are 10.5-11 and I ordered these in an 11. These are my first chelsea's and the alternative was blundstones for 170 bucks so these definitely seemed like more bang for buck. Also are they resolable?

I plan to wear two pairs of shoes! One for walking outside and one for inside.

I actually have the boots on now so here’s a pic. https://imgur.com/a/FpklPuw

They’re getting taken to a leather cleaner soon. Turns out they’re men’s 😂 I bought them from a vintage store so no clue why they’re on amazon! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HGHN02/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rNDXDb0Q3N6A8

I have these Rockports and they're surprisingly not terrible. They'll certainly get you through a trip to Vegas.

I'd also look at ASOS and the department store brands if you want to keep it on the cheap side, and maybe something like Bexley if you want to spend more.

u/matherly32 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I want to get chelsea boots on sale now for the winter... suggestions? I like these dr. marten in black. The chunkiness doesn't bother me too much... what do you guys think?

u/osulu91 · 6 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Try some dress boots with rubber soles. I recommend the Rockport chelsea boots. Dressy (not too dressy though), and also waterproof.

I got mine for around $35 at Dillards on sale

They're in the chelsea boot style!
