Have you looked into Soylent? (Not a joke, despite the name.) It's the first 100% complete food replacement. My friend drinks this as a supplement to smaller meals to get all her required nutrition, but you can also just drink this exclusively and not eat. Crazy, right?! In smaller amounts it adds a healthy dose of all the vitamins & minerals you need to a health shake.

Spirulina powder is also really excellent for you and contains a lot of protein.

Chia seeds are so good for you and add a pleasant texture to smoothies & such!

Kale - fresh or powdered is so good for you and honestly does NOT add a nasty veggie taste to otherwise sweet drinks! Same with carrots. It can be especially good with blueberries or blackberries, and carrots are good with strawberries and apples.

Ooh! I love this game!

PB2 is my jam! I like the chocolate version, but there is a plain peanut butter version too. I love adding it to protein powders that are a little bland.

I buy my chia seeds in bulk.

Hemp hearts are a great source of complete protein.

This chia, flax cocoa mix is really good with chocolate protein powder.. and chocolate pb2... and on yogurt... etc. Love this stuff. Cheaper in bulk. They used to make a berry version too but I can't find it.

This is the kind of supergreens I use, but there are a variety of flavors so I linked you to the search. I just do the original to keep it neutral.

I can make a few recommendations that have worked for me in the past:

  • I used to prepare steel cut oats overnight in a crockpot (with a timer). Honestly I never really enjoyed oatmeal but I liked how healthy it was and the energy it gave me. You can also put in whatever you want to mix things up. My go-to toppings were a handful of walnuts, blueberries, and a tablespoon of this cocoa/coconut flax seed stuff. I used to also put in a packet of splenda but decided to try to back off making it too sweet and instead just put in more blueberries if I needed it.

  • There's a ton of great recipes for this so this one I'm linking is just an example but you can prepare these delicious egg fritata muffin things and keep them in the freezer and heat them up in the morning in the microwave. They're low calorie, the protein in eggs is really good at filling you up, and you can put in a ton of healthy veggies too. Also pretty low calorie.
  • Similar to the oatmeal, just get some plain greek yogurt and put some stuff in it. I did the same toppings as my oatmeal but added a little bit of honey (since I got unflavored greek yogurt which is kind of gross by itself).
  • And my final recommendation is nothing at all! I've been skipping breakfast since the beginning of 2016 and it's been the best change to my diet I could have made. I found that if I ate a small breakfast, I just felt hungry and unsatisfied until lunch, but if I ate a big breakfast, I had a lot of trouble not eating too much the rest of the day. So now, I skip breakfast and opt for a cup of black coffee instead. It helps curb any hunger I have until I eat lunch and then I can eat a large meal for lunch and dinner and also sneak in some snacks. This strategy is called Intermittent Fasting which you can learn a little more about here. I honestly don't follow it strictly but it works really well for me.

Look into KIND bars if you have them available. A few of them are Keto friendly and have the benefit of having little in the way of process crap in them.

I love making chia seed pudding the night before. It's super quick and easy. They have a nice mild nutty flavor to them. All you need are storage containers, a measuring cup, and a measuring spoon. Oh and your ingredients of course. You can also make them in mass a few nights before.

The base ingredients are 3 tbsp of chia seeds and 1/2 a cup of unsweetened almond milk. You can substitute a different low carb milk alternative or even a protein shake. I use this Costco shake when I want a more protein heavy meal. You can use protein powders if you'd like. And that's just for the base. You can add nuts, a couple berries, stevia, peanut butter, cocoa powder, etc. There are tons of recipes online on how to augment it.

Macro's for the Chia and Almond Milk base mentioned above:

Cal: 175
Fat: 11.2g
Carb: 2g net (14.2 carb - 12.2 fiber)
Prot: 5.5g

Macro's for just 3 tbsp chia seeds:

Cal:160
Fat: 10g
Carb 2g net (14 carb - 12 fiber)
Prot: 5g

You can add more liquid if you want as well, or less chia seeds. Chia seeds can absorb 9 times their weight in liquid. You can do 3 tbsp to 1 cup or more if you want. It all depends on what consistency you like. Also the longer they soak the more jelly like they turn.

And it's pretty cheap in my mind. This 2 lbs bag is only $10 on amazon. If you use 3 tbsp per meal, that's about 25 meals worth of seed. Or $0.40 per meal. You'll have to add the cost of the liquid to it as well. But there's nothing stopping you from adding water to them instead.

Ok give me just a few to grab them

Edit 2: You can grab the few I use the most here. As you can see, I like peanut butter and chocolate. A few things to do to make things even healthier...

Add in chia seeds - awesome stuff.

Swap out maple syrup for agave syrup. I tend to use the dark agave.

Use agave instead of butter for binding the all oat recipes. Butter binds okay, but agave works great. Comes out super chewy.

Use parchment paper - this is not the same as wax paper!! Parchment paper can be used in the oven at higher temperatures, something wax paper isn't good for. You'll melt the wax. When you're done, you can use the parchment paper to twist and wrap up the bars for sticking in your jersey.

When it comes to the protein powder additions, use whey protein isolate or whey protein hydroisolate. Its more expensive, but substantially more effective. Isolate has less fats, less lactose, and is absorbed easier. Hydroisolate takes things a step further, reducing the amount of digestion that needs to be done. Since you're making a batch, WPI and WPH will last a long while this way. They also usually taste like shit, but since you're making delicious fudge brownies (in healthy form) and oat bars, it works out.

Do you like coconut? I recently bought a 4 pack of shredded UNSWEETENED coconut from amazon!~ It is amazing. There is totally no need for sweetened coconut, and all the stores around here were strictly sweetened.. UGH! You can eat it in a lot of things! I eat it mixed with natural peanut butter for a treat//fat bomb on keto. SO GOOD!

I know some do not like coconut, soo I will also suggest chia seeds. They are filling and FULL of fiber! You can add them to smoothies, drinks, liquids and they swell up and make a gooey consistency like tapioca.. Though some don't like that you can grind them up and they feel more pudding-like. (With a coffee grinder, or mortar/pestle.) I use them for chocolate pudding. Unsweetened cocoa, sugar substitute and unsweetened almond milk with some sugar substitute. It's great for a treat after a night of the seeds swelling up.

Every night I have a base of either quinoa or rice, prepared in my rice cooker with various vegetables and spices. If rice, I'll roll it up with nori for homemade veggie rolls.

With dinner I have a 12 ounce glass of water with two tablespoons of flax and one tablespoon of chia.

I buy my pinto beans and black beans loose in bulk at the local grocery store when picking up my vegetables, usually around 5 or 6 pounds of each at a time.

Cumin, garlic powder, tahini, and dry garbanzo beans go for a good homemade hummus in a food processor. Needs a fresh lemon or two squeezed into the tahini. Original recipe had olive oil and salt, I leave out the oil entirely and either cut the salt down to a dash or none at all.

I keep oats and almond meal on hand to make pdb cookies with the same food processor, just add a banana or two, cinnamon, nutmeg, almond butter, and raisins if you like. The original recipe called for dates and I said eat me I'm doing raisins.

I got peppermint in bulk to make tea with, both by itself as well as mixing with chamomile, mugwort, etc.

I keep almost all of the above in these convenient cereal containers to both extend shelf life, shelf space, and remove any branding or advertising. Mason jars are also awesome!

Don't forget you can dehydrate your own food as well!

  • 16 oz Mason Jar with Plastic Lid
  • Steel Cut Oats (7 oz)
  • 1 tbsp (2 rounded normal spoons) of Chia Seeds
  • Add Almond Milk to ~9 oz (more than 2 oz)
  • Mix
  • Blueberries (12+)
  • Raspberries (6+)
  • PB2 (2 tbsp)
  • Fill to rim with Greek Yogurt
  • Shake the shit out of it

    Warning: this is pretty calorie dense (~1K kcal, the oats alone are 600 kcal) but you can easily adjust it. First, remove the PB2 (45 kcal.) Then reduce the oats slightly or substitute a yogurt with less sugar, but I'd recommend just scaling everything because this mix tastes amazing and has perfect mouth feel.

Yeah up your fiber intake.

I make these like fruit and kale smoothies and add a bunch of chia seeds in it for breakfast. It's worked better for me than fiber pills.

It's worked way better for me than the fiber pills...plus get other things from fruits/veggies...and sometimes fills me up so I don't need lunch/lose weight.

Eat more fiber.

Here's what I do. Buy a bunch of chia, and a bunch of oatmeal. Chia is your best friend now.

Mix that shit in with your oatmeal, and add protein to your oatmeal. The texture is shit, but it does the job.

Every time you have a protein shake, add a few spoonfuls of chia to it. Shit will fall out your asshole when you sit down on the can like change falling out your pocket in the car, you'll be amazed.

This is what I use. It's good stuff, and you'll be amazed at your poops, just don't eat too much or you'll tear your asshole.

Chia seeds can be pretty cheap through Amazon. I like this one for $6-7 - 2lb lasts me about a month of eating it as pudding for breakfast every morning.

Mix 3tbsp with a cup of milk (or milk substitute of your choice). Stir again after it's set up for a few minutes. I like mine with cinnamon, raisins, and a little vanilla extract.

Try Chia Seeds in a glass of water. They are super filling, I have heard that they are really good for you, and they are less than 50 calories.

Mix the Chia seeds in water and let sit for 15 minutes. They turn into a thick gelatinous drink that should quiet the stomach grumbles for a while.

A couple of things that (might) help. Daily I take a "live" probiotic which I really like. I tell my kids they are "body bugs" that live in our guts and help us digest stuff. Here is the one I take.. And, one thing that made me flow like a faucet was adding Chia seed to my morning shakes. My buddy warned me to start slow - did I listen... nope... did I feel the effects, you bet! This is the Chia that I use. When I blend it into my morning shake using a NutriBullet blender and I can't taste them at all. However, when I only use my shaker bottle to make my shake, you can definitely detect the texture - I'm OK with it, but others can't stand bits in their drink.

Problem is I dont really have any great diet set, thats why Im here trying to reinvent my diet. Didnt even used to eat breakfast dont like most breakfast foods. Due to lack of time and $, food is almost always an afterthought. And to the original question, how much chia is too much before I start overloading bowels as you say?

Chia looks ultra incredibly cheap to me for its nutrients, 6lbs organic for $25.

How about a Chia breakfast cereal, as a substitute for something like oatmeal?

I mix that with at least a 4- to 6-1 ratio of almond milk to chia seeds (depends on what kind of texture you like). Let it sit at least for several hours to let the chia seeds absorb all of the almond milk.

I would just pull out a portion for a day's breakfast, heat in the microwave with butter, add an artificial sweetener, some cinnamon, or whatever.

You can't go wrong with chia seeds . You may have heard of them and they generally get positive reviews for their high nutritional content but less so for their hydrophiliac properties. I would have similar problems with my long runs when I first started running - but chia seems to really moderate and control things if I take it right before I go out.
