If you are looking for something comprehensive send her a link to Wookieepedia instead. It's far more complete than any printed encyclopedia, contains both canon and Legends information and it's constantly being updated when new things are released. It's a lore geek's best friend.

As far as the gift goes, you could still get her that Visual Encyclopedia because it's got lots of really nice pictures. Alternatively, Ultimate Star Wars, The Complete Visual Dictionary, The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary, Rogue One Visual Dictionary and the Character Encyclopedia are all good books that have a lot of great info in them. You could also go with the Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, although it's no longer complete and much of the information is no longer canon.

Whatever you pick, make sure it's from the heart and I'm sure she'll like it.

This was one of my most favorite books as a child. I can't find it at any of the local used book stores and I'd love to have it again to relive my childhood joy!

Thanks!

That is such a good idea! I'll have to remember that if I have a kid. Here are some of my favorites (new and old). I'm not sure how unusual they are (many are Caldecott winners) but they might help.

The Paper Bag Princess

Wolf in the Snow

Drawn Together

Any of Chris Van Allsburg's texts (some are very popular, like Jumanji)

Imogene's Antlers

Dreamers

Mirette on the High Wire

A House that Once Was

Where's My Teddy?

There's Something in My Attic

There's a Nightmare in my Closet

A lot of Boynton books have good meter. Your big boy will likely be growing out of them over the next year or so, though. A similarly awesome book that our almost-3 loves is The Circus Ship.

This is a fantastic list of books and other resources: http://creativewithkids.com/resources-for-talking-to-kids-about-race-and-racism/

And /u/Shostakovich22, the book you're thinking of is Amazing Grace - definitely a great one!

u/star_jump · 9 pointsr/transformers

You first have to decide which continuity you are most interested in. There's old school G1 that started back in 1984 (which itself is at least two different continuities, the cartoon and the comic book. Three if you count the UK comics.) There's the Cybertron series that your Starscream is from which is part of the Unicron trilogy. And there's the Bay-formers movies. While the first two have a little in common, the movie franchise has almost nothing in common with the rest of them other than the basic concept for a few characters. If you're only concerned with the movies, watching the previous 4 is an easy endeavor. If you really want to know more about the lore/history associated with the entire brand, that's a much greater task.

Two possibilties: Dive in to http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Continuities, and don't be afraid to just start link clicking until you've got a feel for how all the different continuities are related to one another.

The other possibility: Though a bit dated, the Ultimate Transformers Guide is a very good jumping off point: https://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Ultimate-Guide-Simon-Furman/dp/0756603145 It's a little G1 centric, but G1 serves as the basis for just about every other continuity.

I didn't think much of Shakespeare, and then I studied King Lear, I reccomend Laurence Olivier's performance, he is so natural in his delivery that the meaning is usually very clear. You might also want to check out Ian Mckellen talking about his portrayal of the character of Lear, and look at some lectures on YouTube. All of this helped my understanding greatly.

This guys lectures are very good:

Also, I got this book when I was in school, and it is a good starting point for Shakespeare, as you can find out what is going on in his plays. Leon Garfield has adapted them into stories.

The Rebel Files gives a length of 150m from the CR90, and the Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles gives a length of 315m for the Sphyrna. Both sources are less than a year old.

I agree that the stated length of the Sphyrna is inconsistent with its on-screen appearances, but that's the only number we have. Feel free to provide better information, if you have a source.

We read (sang) On Top of the Potty over and over and over and over and...well I basically have it memorized right now. Sister recommended it after doing it with her kids and ours enjoyed it, I don't know if I can quantify how much it helped.

My 4yo still holds it in for a day or so, she just doesn't like to poop. One thing that helped was we used to really celebrate when she'd poop and she got a kick out of that. She still wants us to come and see when she poops, but at this stage, you know, they don't poop anymore. She takes a shit. Like, a beastly, middle-aged, alcoholic bum shit that stinks up the whole floor, and we're still trying to give positive feedback but enthusiasm is waning!

Ballerina by Peter Sis

Emma and Julia Love Ballet by Barbara McClintock

Lola's Fandango by Anna Witte

My 4 year old who is obsessed with ballet is loving these books right now!

u/tobiasosor · 8 pointsr/canada

I read a book to my son about this -- it's about a boy who has so much pent up energy he drives his family crazy before he finds an outlet in dance classes. He ends up loving the class. There's a not so subtle theme against gender stereotyping that was great to see in a children's book.

Also, my son picked the book out.

There is actually someone who makes cookbooks for the Wizarding World. I just bought one and have loved every recipe I've made from it so far.

Just as a joke you should give her a copy of the David Myles (Canadian Musician) book "Santa Never Brings Me a Banjo". It's based on his song and pretty cute.

uh huh :) <3

Last year for the fiftieth they grabbed a YA author for each of the 11 Doctors.

Neil Gaiman had Eleven, Patrick Ness for Five, Charlie Higson was Nine, etc.

It's awesome! This is the Colfer one <3

u/Chance80 · 2 pointsr/StarWarsArmada

Here ya go I got it for my son for Christmas it's really good. Better than TFA one IMO.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/books

Great stuff, and some excellent nostalgic recs in this thread. If you're interested in filling up the shelf with some more contemporary (but excellent) picture books, I recommend...

Yoko by Rosemary Wells

No David! by David Shannon

Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes

Bark, George by Jules Feiffer

The Whole Pigeon Series by Mo Willems (board book sets are readily available if I'm not mistaken)

Little Hoot by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (I like her book Little Pea as well)

And two of my own nostalgia picks that I haven't seen mentioned but that really stuck with me through the years:

Drummer Hoff by Barbara and Ed Emberley

Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag

u/gambalore · 1 pointr/StarWars

It's a book. It's good.

u/GarikTheFaceLoran · 1 pointr/StarWars

The Rogue One: Ultimate Visual Guide gives the backstory to all the characters. I recommend you pick it up if you want to learn more.

u/tandem7 · 5 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Drummer Hoff - 14.84, prime, high priority

Atlas Shrugged Part 1 and Atlas Shrugged Part 2 - 8.06 and 10.04, both prime, high priority

total 48.47

There was no Complete Star Wars dictionary in 2016. There was one in 2006. I'm pretty sure this is referencing the EU. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Dictionary-Characters-Creatures/dp/0756622387

u/RyvalHEX · 1 pointr/StarWars

This one is definitely it, I own it and it's in the theme of all the other official Star Wars visual dictonaries.

u/Drafonni · -1 pointsr/PrequelMemes

Overuse of nostalgia with the plot jumping around without much happening are definite weaknesses with the first half of the movie. How bad it really is is largely depending on preference.

In my opinion, the problem with the movie is that it didn’t commit to being a darker movie. You can see into how the story could’ve played out in The Art of Rogue One and The Ultimate Visual Guide.

u/Ser_Duck_The_Stout · 3 pointsr/starwarsbooks

If you're more into world-building than story, I think you'd really enjoy some of the reference books. I'm especially thinking of the visual dictionaries which expand on the characters, planets, and tech from the movies. There's also the Galactic Maps and Complete Locations books too, which really are world building books.

The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary

Rogue One Visual Dictionary

The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary

Star Wars Galactic Maps

Star Wars Complete Locations

Anyone else's parents read this delightful bit of anti-war propaganda to them as children? I remember reading it and thinking "wow, war is so futile." My opinion really hasn't changed since then.
