I'm actually ordering a second one for my mom right now.
So let's say you're crazy like me and want to wake up at 5 am every day. You set the alarm for 5 am and go to sleep with plenty of time. This is only for health issues, obviously, but even if you go to bed at like midnight or 1 am it will still wake you up. You'll just be super tired thrgouhout the day.
So you set the alarm for 5. At 4:30, when you're nice and comfy in bed asleep the light on the alarm clock will come on. It's dim and gentle at first, but over the next half hour it will be slowly getting brighter and brighter.
By the time 5 am rolls around you have already been exposed to light for 30 minutes. A gentle alarm comes on and beeps to wake you up, and you're up! It;s pretty easy.
I like to combine this with Sleep Cycle as it gives me the best of both worlds and I like to take a look at my sleeping cycles.
You can buy the basic form of the alarm clock here, it's $50.
Okay based on that I'm going to suggest a few things you could add to your wish list. I promise I won't be offended if you don't like them, but you might find something you're interested in. :)
Tea things:
First for cute tea things, I highly recommend the flowering tea pot I received it as an Arbitrary Day gift and it's awesome. The teas are delicious and most importantly, to me, the tea pot is sooo cute.
Mana Tea infuser a lot of people have this on their wish lists. I should add it to mine too.
Tea Sampler There are several samplers with different types of tea from this company and a bunch of others. You should look around for sure.
Hello Kitty Stuff:
Add on Hello Kitty alarm clock
This Hello Kitty toy It's adorable.

You're welcome! This is the one I have. It's probably the cheapest on Amazon, but it works great. Most days I wake up before the alarm starts going off thanks to the light.https://www.amazon.com/hOmeLabs-Sunrise-Alarm-Clock-Simulation/dp/B074NB5TNW
Also, you sound like a really sweet kid, and it's wonderful you care so much about your parents. I hope your sister grows out of this and appreciates having you around.
This is the tricked out version of the toaster I currently own and love. It's on sale at Amazon for $54 which is out of your price range I know, but it's a good deal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003TSTOXO/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1426513596&sr=8-2&keywords=KitchenAid+toaster&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
I think the classic black kit kat wall clock is an awesome kitchen decoration: http://www.amazon.com/Kit-Cat-Clock-BC01-Classic-Black/dp/B0019IBD3U
Thank you for the contest - if I win, I like to be surprised!
Oh, that sucks about your doctor. The NHS is fab but soooo variable :(
Ok so I couldn't find anywhere to get the exact one I had but this one looks very similar. Lumie were one of the first companies to make these commercially, and they're very good. You have to be careful as some of the SAD lamps use really bright 'normal' light bulbs but I believe there is a certain type of bulb which mimics daylight more accurately, and Lumie use those. The sunrise/sunset functions really helped me get into a better sleep cycle, which had a positive knock on effect. Hope that's helpful :)
I had the most wonderful time in college. In fact, I stayed for 7 years.
I went to 2 universities and 2 community colleges... with a different major at each institution. We can say I was somewhat indecisive. I spent most of my time focusing on my life socially instead of academically. But man, it was the time of my life.
I wasn't too involved in High School, a little here and there, but when I enrolled in my last University, I told myself I had to get involved. So I pledged a professional co-ed fraternity. It changed my life. It was a community with an alike atmosphere to RAoA. We volunteered, raised funds, had secret santas and ugly sweater parties, fostered brotherhood and friendship, and we were really taught to give instead of take.
I used to be uptight and unpleasant. College helped me open up to the people around me and truly live a happy life. Although, now I find myself with an addiction to pizza.
As for a school related item? I choose this because I have ALWAYS had a problem with waking up. This morning it took 4 alarms to rouse me. I firmly believe if I had something like this alarm clock, I wouldn't have missed so many classes in college, or overslept throughout my career afterwards.
Boo to the regular work week when you're a night owl. :P
I hope you have a grand school year! Enjoy your 3rd year because that 4th one is approaching -- you'll wonder where the time went and wonder if it stole your free time on the way haha.
Definitely not the winner! I've won maybe three contest on here and that's the only contests I have ever won.
[I would super love this, especially since my alarm clock just broke :(] (http://www.amazon.com/Hello-Kitty-Soothing-Lights-Thermometer/dp/B004W82H7A/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1OBUBT1OI12MV&coliid=I2F2QXD1IIZ8TL) One the House Things wishlist !
Great contest thank you!
Everyone's a winner :D
Okay, so I am pretty sure you are just me writing from the past, because I have had the exact same problem... BUT luckily for you, I have determined a series of solutions!
1.) The Alarmy app
is one that requires you to get up and take a picture of something in your house/apartment in order to disable the alarm. It is super helpful to me but it does have the tendency to be a bit buggy sometimes (and not got off), so be forewarned...
2.) I have a Clocky alarm as well and it is also pretty effective. It is one of those alarms that rolls off your nightstand and hides. And it certainly does make the most God-awful, absolutely un-ignorable sound in the world, so there's no danger of sleeping through that.
So that's my collection of knowledge at the moment. Hopefully it helps!
you can definitely use your phone as a timer in most events, although there are other timers available if you want to clout chase (although, i hear that using phones instead of timers is the hot new thing in pf, so be wary). Because the classic 12 button timer that most camps/tournaments gave out has been discontinued, there is really only one option left for good, durable and effective timers:
https://www.amazon.com/CDN-TM30-2-Alarm-Timer-Alarm-Vibrates/dp/B004S0SO9M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1538057146&sr=8-3&keywords=debate+timer
as for stands, get one. once again, clout chasing, but also they are pretty useful. obviously an investment, but it was definitely worth it (i've had mine for just short of 5 years, still works)
https://www.amazon.com/Tabletote-Portable-Lightweight-Adjustable-Notebook/dp/B005IXSXPI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538057268&sr=8-1&keywords=debate+stand
I think it's rather hard to find an ideal gift. I think the gift ideas divide into two groups: just something with math like
http://www.amazon.com/The-Unemployed-Philosophers-Guild-W64004M/dp/B001237296
or
http://www.amazon.com/DCI-Powder-Mathematics-Blackboard-Diameter/dp/B001FVRUFQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454019324&sr=8-1&keywords=math+clock
the remainder of which would be related to his work. A prime example of this is a fountain pen like one has mentioned here. If you can't decide, a composite of the two groups would work as well. A personal favorite of mine:
http://www.zazzle.com/collatz_space_poster-228714821075702815
Hope this helps you index some of your ideas.
I have this model as well. They came out with a newer version though [here] (https://www.amazon.com/hOmeLabs-Sunrise-Alarm-Clock-Simulation/dp/B074NB5TNW/ref=pd_sim_201_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B074NB5TNW&pd_rd_r=W8WZ2R9CQS2CT3ZE7XW3&pd_rd_w=LYwMW&pd_rd_wg=AKEYB&psc=1&refRID=W8WZ2R9CQS2CT3ZE7XW3)
The newer one isn't too different, but the stand is better and I think the lighting is a little better. I ordered it for a friend.
There's a bunch of vendors on Amazon selling these things so I would just try to find the cheapest.
I'm a pretty sensitive sleeper so the amount of light that comes off of these clocks is plenty for me. So if you're a heavy sleeper this may or may not work for you.
Since he's going to be in the hospital a lot, I think the Wake-Up Light would be a great gift to maybe help him feel a bit more energized.
Another cool gift would be a few Lego Architecture sets, which he could work on while in the hospital.
That's what I meant, yes. The idea behind a commitment device is that you are actually two selves, the planner and the doer. The planner may have high hopes, but the doer's the one who has to execute the plan. The problem is that the planner has no good way to enforce the plans, s/he just hopes that the doer will execute because there is a plan. (Seinfeld actually had a great description of this!)
Enter the commitment device. It's the way that the planner ensures his plan is followed through on. The commitment device removes options from the doer so that the doer is much more likely to execute the plan. If you put the groceries budget on a prepaid card that can't be spent anywhere else, you ensure that it can't be flexed out. That is, the planner knows that the doer will be tempted to flex the grocery budget to use for lunches. So the planner sets up a situation where the doer can't flex it. One fun example is Clocky, the clock that runs away from you when it goes off. The planner sets the alarm, and when it goes off, the doer has 3 choices: let the alarm ring, get up, or hit the snooze button. Knowing that the doer will be tempted to hit the snooze button, the planner removes the snooze option by purchasing Clocky. Now the doer must choose between getting up or letting the alarm clock ring while driving around the bedroom. (In the past, I solved this a slightly different way. I had a thing of caffeinated water next to my bed, and I'd drink that, then hit the snooze button. I normally didn't get to hear the second alarm because either the caffeine woke me up or nature calling would.)
Product Reviews, Winter Edition:
If you wake up before the sun is up consider buying a wake up light like this (it helps fool your brain into waking up naturally)
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-HF3500-60-Wake-Up-Light/dp/B00F0W1RIW
Go to bed at about the same time every night if you can- consider taking melatonin (especially if you are taking meds for ADHD). You can buy it at just about any grocery store. I have five kids, two with ADHD like me and the melatonin "knocks them out" safely in about 30 minutes. A good night's rest can be the key to waking up on time.
If you don't sleep well because your mind is racing about what you have to do the next day then write yourself a brief to-do list to remind you. Then tell your brain not to worry and get some rest. Consider meditation before bed as well to help you fall asleep.
Last, if worst comes to worst, find work that fits you - not the other way around. Some jobs can be very flexible about when you show up. Also, consider talking to your boss about your condition, see if you can offer something to compensate:
Boss, I have to accept that I am who I am and I'm probably going to be a little late sometimes. But, once I am here I will give 110% and stay late every day to balance out the time - if it is ok.
best of luck!
I really like southwestern style like this. I think these are pretty cute too. Nice and simple looking.
Worst house we've lived in is this one. The people that lived here before left tape along every border in the house and then painted on top of the tape, who even does that? They also messed up tiling the kitchen and the bathroom floors. They didn't patch most of the holes in the walls and what they did patch, they never smoothed down.
My favourite cephalopod
So delicious!
This is kind of cool.
Thanks for the chance! Really red, escapades, pound cake, click it or ticket, jewel, who's she red, after sex, fifth avenue, jam n' jelly, cocktail hour, watermelon, china doll
Edit: Sorry, guess someone already took the cherry limeade(best drink ever) so I'll leave this one instead lol.
Thanks so much for posting this! I am curious - I saw someone post about using this mirror for their vanity, but they said the color pulled more blue than in the pictures. Would that still be usable for a vanity? I also have a ceiling light that pulls yellow. Would that neutralize the blue at all?
I love the look of this mirror, but want to make sure the lighting is adequate before dropping a lot of cash on it. =P
We LOVE the [OK to Wake stuffed owl.] (http://www.amazon.com/Wake-With-Night-Light-Music-Timer/dp/B0044D0HA2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381716013&sr=8-1&keywords=owl+clock+wake) It is $25 and let's you set a wakeup time. At that time it glows green and plays a soft music. If your little one wakes early they can squeeze the belly and it tells them if it is time to wake up, and if not it tells them to go back to sleep and you can set it to play a certain amount of time of lullaby music.
My 4 year old loves it.
There are a ton of them on Amazon, the most popular of which is the "OK to Wake!". It's $29, but for $10 more you can get an upgraded clock by the same company, the Teach Me Time which does all the stuff the OK to Wake! does but also has a real clock on it and will help your kid learn to read the time.
That said, I'm with /u/hadesarrow, a simple timer on a light or even one of those sunlight simulator alarm clocks would be a better investment. After all the cutesy kid alarm clock will be too babyish for them soon, but a real alarm clock with a sunrise simulator light (or plug for a lamp) will be useful forever.

It is super awesome! It has a sensor to turn it on and even though the light it blue-ish, I feel like its more comparable to natural lighting than the yellowish bulbs that are usually indoors. Plus the light is super even and you can tell if anything is under blended super easily. It cost about $200. You do have to be a tiny bit familiar with wiring to set it up but its not too difficult.

I wasn’t sure if this would work for me so I bought a cheaper one first off of Amazon
Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock with Sunrise Simulation, White (HF3500/60) https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00F0W1RIW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8F7PDbP3DEY00
I got it when it was about Au$65 and yes it definitively helps but isn’t perfect. I am planning on upgrading to a more expensive one but am glad I got a cheaper one first so that I don’t feel guilty dropping a couple hundred on a better one, my husband is planning on putting the cheaper one on his side of the bed when we get a better/brighter one.
I use this Phillips Wake-Up Light to help me get up and it's been great. The light starts gradually turning on half an hour before the alarm goes off at which point it is on full brightness. It is supposed to simulate waking up with the sun, and I think my mind does register it and begin waking up even if I'm not consciously aware of it. However, I have to remind myself to sleep facing the light for the last few hours before waking up (I'm often partially conscious throughout the night so I am able to remind myself, it's disruptive but helpful in this situation). Here's the link to the one I have, although there are other more sophisticated ones.

This one specifically, the HF3500. But in hindsight I wish I'd gotten the one with the battery. And the ability to set multiple schedules.
Probably your phone can do it too with the right app, but this one is super bright.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0W1RIW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Pretty basic but it works for me well. I'm actually looking at some other ones with sweet colors and music in stuff like this one though: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073NMVKZB/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?psc=1
It's not as good as the original Radioshack timer (rip in peace) but it's pretty close: CDN TM30 Direct Entry 2-Alarm Timer-Alarm Sounds or Vibrates - 1 count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004S0SO9M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_71M3CbQNT03T5
I've used this for years and it's great. Has a silenced and non silenced timer, counts up and down, has a stand so you can set down the timer, and let's you put in the specific time you have remaining (useful for prep time).
i set 2 alarms. my phone goes off and i always hit snooze. like you i sometimes do it in my sleep. 9 minutes later it goes off again. if i hit snooze again, then a minute later, my alarm clock goes off. its really loud and i have to get up to turn it off. it really helps to have to get up to turn off the alarm because you definitely have to wake up. you could put the alarm clock all the way across the room and just crank up the volume.
you could even get something like this - an alarm clock on wheels. you'd have to chase it across the house. :) http://www.amazon.com/Clocky-Alarm-Clock-Wheels-Kitchen/dp/B000TAS9XQ
also, some people actually sleep in their workout clothes to help them get moving.
good luck, getting up so early is really hard.

Also have a great day, and thanks for the contest!!
Here's what I use. I just got it last week but so far I really like it! It has a sunrise/alarm setting, and different brightness levels for the clock so you can make it just barely visible at night.
What I'm still struggling a bit with is creating a dark environment before bed! But I'm getting better at that.

I think that you would like this flip down clock, it's very stylish and great for an office
I use one of those alarm clocks that slowly lights up in the morning so it mimics a sunrise. That helps quite a bit. The one I got was a bit on the pricey side I felt, but I do feel like it was worth it:
https://www.amazon.ca/Philips-HF3500-60-Wake-Up-Light/dp/B00F0W1RIW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1541437582&sr=8-4&keywords=light+up+alarm+clock
Also, like everyone else says, take your vitamin D
This one - 'homelabs' - is alright. You can set how long before the audio alarm that the light starts brightening. There's only one colour for the gradual brightening though (but it's quite alright). I have the sound on mine set to the FM radio, to RNZ Concert, which is great (RNZ Concert only has wacky stuff around midnight).
Here's a clock that I think is super cool. And this is something that I need to make a pop filter with [: Thanks for the contest, man. Don't worry be happy
My son was about 2 and a half when he developed the very fun habit of just getting out of bed whenever he liked. We tried a bunch of things, but nothing really worked. Eventually we bought a stuffed owl that tells kids when they're allowed to get up out of pure desperation. Worked like magic, and still works great now at almost 4. Your mileage may vary, but it's probably worth a shot: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0044D0HA2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1413774838&sr=8-1
We have a clock from La Crosse Technology similar to this one and it sets to the atomic clock via radio signal. For an inexpensive clock, it's pretty nice. We've had it for years and whenever I check, it always matches time.is perfectly, to the second.
I've destroyed (unintentionally) more than 10 alarm clocks throughout HS to college.
A coworker gave me a clock with wheels on it, it was a gag gift but it worked:
http://www.amazon.com/Clocky-Alarm-Clock-Wheels-Kitchen/dp/B000TAS9XQ
It does one thing well, it makes sure you stay awake!
I would personally recommend just going to bed early. Making a set bed time will help your body establish a sleep schedule.
This is pretty cool

I could keep going, I love doing this stuff!
I own one and love it. My friend's daughter (she's 3) thinks it's the cat's pajamas and loves to stare at it.
They are $50 on Amazon for the full sized ones.
I got this one before winter because I have the hardest time getting up in the dark as well. Its fairly basic it has brightness, 24 hour clock only I believe, alarm time, and one alarm sound. There are some higher end models with more features but this does the job. Only issue I've found is not being able to set alarms for individual days. So if you dont work on weekends or have different times you get up you'll have to manually change and/or shut it off.
Edit: But overall I would definitely recommend it or another model because it does make getting up more enjoyable and less startling.
I used to have a sunrise alarm clock. It generates an artificial sunrise which kicks in gradually before you need to wake up. By the time I'd set it for I'd have woken up naturally thanks to all the light - but there's a backup buzzer alarm too. It's a far gentler way to start the day.
This sort of thing. I broke mine some years ago, but it did give me good service. It was more expensive than a regular alarm clock, but for me it was really worth it. I was very much a victim of the snooze button too but found that the gradual brightening of the room was a great solution for my lengthy wake-up process.
Dragon ear cuff! It feels so Game of Thrones-y
or
Solar Dancing Sunflower! Saw this in someone's car and almost flipped my shit!

Any of these would be amazing. I couldn't just pick one cause they're all so cool. If you decide to gift me, any one of these would be nice to have.
For about $90 USD, it can be yours! Honestly, it is pretty cool.
I had really good experiences with a sunrise alarm clock. This specifically is the one I have, but I feel like it was a lot cheaper when I bought it, maybe only $60 at that point. Maybe I got it on sale.
Unfortunately, that alarm clock also wakes up my husband who doesn't need to get up for another hour, so I cannot use it now except on a really low setting. But when I lived alone, it was fantastic and I lived in Houghton, MI which is pretty damn far north (at least for North America) so the days were very short.
Also, I got a lot of daylight bulbs and used them in everything save the lamp I used at night. This also helped me stay more active.
We gave my son one when he was about 2.5 years old. We used this one, and it worked very well for him. If we heard him get out of bed early in the morning, we could just yell (from our bed) "Is it green time?" and he would jump back in the bed. He also enjoyed the night light and silly-face features. Around 4 years old we introduced the wake-up alarm as part of teaching him to get himself ready. He figured out the snooze button all by himself. :)
He's 5.5 now, and we recently switched him to this wake-up clock that shows the digital time and an analog clock face together to help him learn to tell time.
Neither are cheap, but they work well and will last a long time. We passed the first one along to a nephew and expect it will be passed around to a few more kids before it's done.
I swear by this alarm clock. It has made me actually get up right away, which I thought was impossible. The key for me was to set it far away, so I have to walk to it to turn it off. It gets so bright (you can adjust the settings on this) that distance does not matter. It also helps me wake up more gradually, so the sound of the alarm isn't so jarring. Another morning thing that has helped me is giving myself something to look forward to while I get ready -- like listening to my current audiobook. It is also nice to start the morning not feeling rushed or guilty about sleeping in. Remembering the positive feels it gives me has made a big difference!
We got our kid one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003D7KV0Q/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
He didn't wake up in the middle of the night, but he did wake up early. Got him that. Taught him that he can't get up till the light turns green. He learned pretty quickly and just stayed quietly in bed and played till the time came.
Since our apartment was so small, we kept our daughter's toddler bed in the same room with us, and we just had to remind her that she needed to stay in bed. Also, we found a color changing alarm clock that was a huge help. It gave our daughter something concrete to focus on - "When the clock is yellow, it is time to sleep; when it turns green, then you can wake up and get Mommy and Daddy." When she forgot early on, we had something specific we could point to to establish the rules; she now sleeps in her own room and stays quiet until the clock turns green (except for nights with bad dreams or illness, of course).
Also, you know your kid. Authors of various articles are writing based on their experiences with their kids, who are different from your kid. Always take their (and my) advice with a grain of salt. You can always try something, and if it doesn't work, change. There is no one way to parent. Children are people, too, with their own personalities and quirks that you will need to work. Establish the goals that are most important to you, and work with your child to figure out how to accomplish it. Changing your mind, or even compromising with your child, does not mean you failed as a parent.
Good luck to you.
[You should get this clock] (http://www.amazon.com/Can-You-Imagine-Melting-Clock/dp/B004RBZ9AO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1375136116&sr=8-2&keywords=clocks) because it is unique (and because i want it to lol). You are pretty amazing for a warlock :).

This what I think someone else was referring to. It runs around. I always wanted one, but never have trouble walking up.
Here's a demo video of Clocky.
More over, I use a sleep tracker. It walked me up when I should naturally wake-up easier. Not sure which phone you use, but both Android and Apple have apps that work well. Related Lifehacker review of sleep trackers.

Woo free money!
I bought a Lumie 30.
Basic, but still not cheap. The alarm noise is dreadful. The buttons are a bit clunky and the selections aren't very intuitive. The clock runs a bit slow. But, it does the job. Good "first" wake-up light to see if these are your thing. You can get them cheaper on ebay, if you have the patience to bid. Spring time might be better to try to find a bargain there.
If you're not already, try and keep good sleep hygiene.
I also use one of these illuminating alarm clocks and it has helped me improve wakefulness.
The last thing I'll say is that I wouldn't assume working EM doesn't necessitate switching sleep cycles (except in residency which is probably the case with most residencies). If you're willing to go out of major metros, you can probably get good terms on your contract and work how you want to work.
Maybe this guy can help. Also make sure your diet is well and you're drinking enough water. Are you getting enough sleep? Too much sleep? You could also see a sleep specialist to check for things like apnea which will decrease the hours of sleep you get per night, making it difficult to wake up.
Been eyeing that clock for some time. How do you like it? $200 is pretty steep for a clock but still....

Not OP but I use this one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00F0W1RIW/
I also find that making it warmer in your bedroom when it's time to wake up helps.
We've had one of these since our son was younger than 2 - similar to the clock idea, but stays in his bed (was in his crib) and helps him go to sleep as well.

I mean, there is a world of difference between looking at a physical object in the hands of a clock and a screen that is lit from the back. To tell the time of the analog clock you only need to get a general idea of where the arms are pointing. With a digital clock you have to be able to read the digits. If you do get a digital clock that needs to be visible from a far it will have to be big (expensive) and the brightness will have to be high (more energy use).
You are free to look up prices if you would like. 14 inch analog clock for ~$22 dollars. Most digital clocks are $15-20 and no where near that size. This $28 clock is 14 inches and is radio controlled to set itself. I doubt that they make digital clocks that big for less than $30. Consider that digital clocks also come with software and other features not necessary in many situations which raise the price of the clocks. Here is a digital clock with a 7 inch display. It is $300 (from the same people with the $30 analog clock).
Digital clocks have more moving parts and include a screen (which must be lit). I think there is no reason to believe that analog clocks would use anywhere near the same amount of energy as digital clocks.
You can verify this for yourself if you want. This small digital takes 2 double A batteries and this large 18" analog takes 1 double A and even includes a thermometer and hygrometer.
Clocky is pretty popular, too.
The middle school math teacher in my building has a great clock with all different kinds of math problems to solve for each number on the clock. Like this one - http://www.amazon.com/DCI-Powder-Mathematics-Blackboard-Diameter/dp/B001FVRUFQ
I love my lumie!!

This will go perfectly on the shelf above your computer!

OP, you should consider getting a sunlight alarm clock! I'm sure it'd help your body adjust to waking up, given that you have the blackout curtains, plus it'd make sure you don't have to worry about your phone running out of battery overnight. I have this one.
Would you be interested in this ? Have had this for a year now but have never used it for more than a month. Mint condition. It's really cool if you are into IFTTT and stuff.

I got one of these an it's pretty good. It's a wake up light that slowly brightens about half an hour before your alarm is scheduled to go off and then starts beeping. And for a limited time its 2% off!
If you don't mind spending a little money I'd recommend getting an alarm clock that wakes you up gradually like this one. It makes getting up a little less difficult.
My Dad swears by this though, but he loves his gadgets.
Not exact (that one looks like it really is from the 1960s) but here is one on amazon I am not sure of the quality of the store and it's pretty cheap, but its something.

Sonya, Your Momma wouldn't tell you this but... question everything. If you don't understand, then ask. Don't ever be afraid of looking silly, because the people that really matter won't think so. Questions lead to knowledge and knowledge helps you grow.
She should have her own clock, so she can tell if it's still to early on Saturday to wake up mommy ;)
I recommend an alarm clock like this one. It simulates the sunrise/sunset. Much nicer than a noisy beep first thing in the morning.
Our 2 and 8 monther finally figured out how to crawl out of his crib (we're surprised it took this long). He's going to move to a big boy bed this weekend. We got him the Ok To Wake! Owl... we'll see if it helps.
Seems like it'll always give a quick indication of the time down to the 1/6 of an hour since the tens digit isn't changing.
I'm fine with that trade for style.
Seems like this is a collector's item now, $55 for one online and it was actually officially licensed Tetris merch.
You could try this owl thing we have. It turns green when it's "OK to wake." She might be a bit too young, but it's worth a try!

You are the hero my sleep deserves.
Maybe not a dog? I've seen ads for this OK To Wake owl. It could maybe look a little doggish to a child. It plays different music and the face glows yellow at night and green when it's ok to wake up.

There's a cheaper version with fewer extra options. It just has a light of one color that slowly increases over time. I don't have DSPD but my partner does, and it helps us both wake up.
Might I suggest getting a wake up light? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F0W1RIW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xgdCCbG6MHHW3
I bought one a couple of years ago because I got blackout blinds for my bedroom for the summer months, which lead to a VERY dark room in the winter mornings.
A wake up light honestly changed how I feel about mornings now. I used to absolutely dread waking up because it took my forever to get energized for the day. Now it's actually kind of nice to wake up to a simulated sunrise.

Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock with Sunrise Simulation, White (HF3500/60) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F0W1RIW/
We got our toddler a clock that glows yellow at bedtime and turns green when it's okay to get out of bed (you set the times). In a couple days she had it figured out and she stays in her bed until 7am, when the clock turns green. It might be worth a try!
This alarm jumps off your table and rolls away, so the only way to turn it off is to chase it around and catch it. :)

EDIT EDIT and one on amazon
It's really nice that for a few weeks at least I'll have an AM reprieve from darkness. I'll still be waking up before the sun but we'll at least have some natural light in the weight room for a bit.
SAD is no joke! I got a light alarm clock to help me get out of bed and it's done wonders! I highly endorse it.
Got this clock as a Christmas gift (Amazon link).
Avoid screens for an hour before bed. I started that and it has been a huge help. Read a book (preferably dry/boring) or if you must use a screen install something like F.Lux to adjust the color temperature.
Oh also check out a light alarm clock. It's life changing if you have to get up before dawn.
My daughter will wake up early to potty. We invested in this:

I have this and it really helps me.
Where's the watch face that looks like this clock?
Nice try. You didn't make this. It exists on Amazon and elsewhere if you need proof.
Everybody that upvoted this, for shame.
Someone I know was like you but they did start exercising and lost a bunch of weight but still didn't help as much as she liked. She picked up a wake up lamp and it's made a world of difference!

This! thank you for the contest.
I could never get up early very well until about three years ago, when my dad had to retire for health reasons and gave me this alarm clock he used.
It's one of those ones that glows brighter and brighter leading up to the alarm going off. In the last three years, the alarm itself has woken me up maaaybe five times. The light is always what woke me up, which is a nice gentle way of getting up.
I know it sounds like essential-oils voodoo bullshit, but I swear this clock rewired my brain into a morning person. I essentially only use the clock as a backup now, I set it for 6:30 a.m. but my brain is up about 6 a.m. anyway.
It’s called the LaMetric Time Wi-Fi Clock for Smart Home.

Is this it?
Philips also makes a much cheaper version ($70). This one has a white light that slowly gets brighter, rather than the colored sunrise simulation.
I don't think Amazon sells this model directly anymore but you may can find it elsewhere. Philips Hf3470 Wake-up Light, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XN4RIC/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_kUlKub1QSJQ0K
They do have one that is 69 bucks but doesn't have FM radio
Philips HF3500/60 Wake-Up Light https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F0W1RIW/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_EVlKub0FCMKFG
They actually have a 10 dollar coupon right now so you can pick it up for 59. I went for the first one because it had radio as well.
http://www.amazon.com/Melting-Clock-Art-Operated-Timepiece/dp/B004RBZ9AO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1313845832&sr=8-2
This looks like the same thing.
I personally like this one: https://www.amazon.com/CDN-TM30-2-Alarm-Timer-Alarm-Vibrates/dp/B004S0SO9M/ref=sr_1_27?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1537932549&sr=1-27&keywords=timer
This is tricky, there is no good way of setting an alarm without waking up your roommate. BUT if your budget allows, there are specific alarm clocks that wake you up slowly to light and "natural" sounds. Personally l haven't used one but I've heard good things.

There's also stuff like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F0W1RIW
You can use something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Wake-Up-Simulation-HF3500-60/dp/B00F0W1RIW?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1
If you do want to splurge, amazon.ca (for us canadians) is selling the lower end philips for $70 right now, which is a decent deal.
... well at least according to the RFD thread
We have used the Teach Me Time clock for about 3 years, and it works really well for my twins.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lumie-Bodyclock-Starter-Wake-Up-Features/dp/B002TEXEAI they expensive though but this tight arse found it worth it for waking up at 5am
solution:
http://www.amazon.com/Clocky-Alarm-Clock-Wheels-Aqua/dp/B000TAS9XQ
It's this(pretty sure at least)
Get a light alarm. I have this one and it's fucking amazing, especially since the sun doesn't rise until around 9 am right now.
(PS: I don't know why it's so expensive. My fiancee bought ours and I didn't ask the price but I refuse to believe she spent $700 on it)
EDIT: Asked the future-wife. She bought for around $70. We're guessing maybe it's discontinued or something, there are newer models for $130 like this one or $50 for this one.
I got this a year ago https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Wake-Up-Simulation-HF3500-60/dp/B00F0W1RIW?keywords=phillips+wake+up+light&qid=1537905858&s=Health+%26+Personal+Care&sr=1-5&ref=sr_1_5 , It definitely works as far as slowly going on and lighting up most of the room by the time the alarm goes off. Would recommend for $50. There are other more expensive versions but this gets the job done.
I personally use this one because I can set it to alarm or vibrate:
https://www.amazon.com/CDN-TM30-2-Alarm-Timer-Alarm-Vibrates/dp/B004S0SO9M/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=cdn+timer&qid=1566922418&s=gateway&sr=8-5
Brand doesn't actually matter that much, but make sure to get one that has numbered buttons so that you dont have to press your three buttons a million times before each speech/cx.
Yeah, that's what I try every morning. I was thinking of buying this http://www.amazon.com/Clocky-Alarm-Clock-Wheels-Aqua/dp/B000TAS9XQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323252311&sr=8-1
I'm going to get this soon.. Maybe it will bring out the inner treasure hunter in you.
Yeah they are. It's this one
I had to go through insomnia therapy before my psychologist was willing to start on a diagnosis of ADHD, since sleep deprivation has similar symptoms. I don't have any experience dealing with Adderall, but I can share some more of the advice I was given.

My SO does use Adderall (not XR, but still), from her list:
I've forced myself to become a morning person during my last semester (the first of my PhD) for the same reasons you mentioned. I made small changes that didn't make it easy, but made it tolerable.
For one, I got a light alarm clock. This one goes on sale regularly, wait and you can get it for $40. It starts filling the room with light for 30 minutes before the back-up sound alarm goes off (which you cannot adjust on this model, but it starts quietly and gets louder). Light usually does not wake me up or keep me awake, but this thing makes your room brighter than the goddamn sun. I find that I wake up easier, probably because something something circadian rhythms sunrise something something.
Once I drag my ass out of bed, I also turn on a light therapy lamp on my desk while I eat breakfast and browse Reddit. This also makes it easier to move around in the morning, and helps with seasonal depression as well.
I'll be honest here, some of these things might be the placebo effect (which of course is still an effect, so I don't really care). My advice is to try various forms of light therapy, but to get things with a money-back guarantee and give it a few weeks to see how things are going. :)
A few weeks into doing this stuff and waking up early, I even started going to the gym in the morning (even though I hate gyms, and mornings) and I've found that it a) wakes me up, and b) makes me feel like one of those obnoxiously productive people who go to the gym in the mornings.
Edit: Still have to figure out how to drag my butt out of bed on a good time on weekends though. It seems like I either wake up at 5am or 11am. Still working on this :)
He's got to cry it out. It's the endgame for all sleep issues with little kids, it's simply a matter of how much guilt and torture the parents want to heap on themselves before they reach that point.
My son and daughter were both like your son, they started out as a awesome sleepers and it all fell apart at about this age. This is rough time for kids, but it's temporary.
EDIT: We introduced this when my son was about 18 months old and it really helped him stay quiet in the early morning hours. The owl tells them "go back to sleep" or turns green and says "It's okay to wake!" after a time that you set.
Well, i have one of these which takes quite the pounding.
It exists, and not only does it exist, it also uses gradually increasing light as well as sound to wake you up.
Edit: It's down to 53 bucks on amazon
its the lametric time. its really nice but very expensive
https://www.amazon.com/LaMetric-Time-Wi-Fi-Clock-Smart/dp/B01IVTVK3W/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=lametric+time&qid=1567607904&s=gateway&sr=8-2
Not the parent, but I have this one and it's extremely helpful for getting me out of bed so damn early.
www.amazon.com/Philips-HF3500-60-Wake-Up-Light/dp/B00F0W1RIW/
Just search "sunlight alarm clock" for more.
Also... when I'm getting up before my fiancee, she just wears an eye mask to bed.
Set your alarm/phone to full volume and set it all across your room on the other side (or at least a good distance away) so you can still hear it but you have to get up to turn it off.
If that doesn't work, you could go for one of these things: https://www.amazon.com/Clocky-Alarm-Clock-Wheels-Aqua/dp/B000TAS9XQ
Here's an alternative idea: a "training clock" typically used for kids. You set a timer on it that changes the color of the clock when it is okay to wake.
Here is one example.
You could set it so that it is yellow from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM and then green from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. That way your mom would just have to look at the color.
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-HF3500-60-Wake-Up-Light/dp/B00F0W1RIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411568655&sr=8-1&keywords=wakeup+lamp
There you go... ;)
If you're gonna use music, for the love of god, make it a large playlist. Easiest way to start hating a song is to make it your alarm.
I switched to using a Wake Up Light. Because of my schedule I usually get 5-6 hours of sleep a night. Couple that with an abrupt wake up from an alarm I felt tired until I got my morning caffeine fix.
With the light it feel like I'm waking up late morning after sleeping in on a Saturday....but everyday!
Yeah, thats what I thought too. It is expensive. Till I see the price I'm like.. Well, this is something I want.
Edit: Here is a $50 one. Not sure there is any difference though.
Mirari Teach Me Time! Talking Alarm Clock & Night-Light
We did some midday practice runs and when the light turned on he jumped in our bed. Read the directions and practice making it work before you present it to the child. We just use the yellow light as the okay to wake. Oh we also opened it up and disabled the night light lights, because we didn't want to be confuse for the airport. Check the pictures, people posted pictures with easy directions on how.
On Amazon it costs $38.76
Apparently it plays the theme song for the alarm as well. Think Geek. Amazon.

in stock at amazon $25 prime
Finland gets very little sunlight in the winter, so bright therapy lamps are popular here. You could try those.
Here's a quick example of such a lamp: https://www.amazon.com/NatureBright-SunTouch-Light-Therapy-package/dp/B000W8Y7FY
There are also alarm clock models if you want it to turn on as you're waking up, here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Wake-up-Simulation-HF3500-60/dp/B00F0W1RIW/
Yeah basically what u/gormand0 linked
I have a bit cheaper version because I’m broke and wasn’t sure if this would work for me. Turns out even this version helped me out a lot.

I got this one through Amazon.

The most common thing I've seen this used for is to display Youtube Subscriber live counts. There are plenty of videos on it.
A Sunrise alarm clock may be easier.
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Wake-Up-Sunrise-Simulation-HF3500/dp/B00F0W1RIW/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1467120921&sr=8-2&keywords=phillips+sunrise+alarm+clock
I don't know if this will help, but there are various clocks you can buy that have a visual 'alarm'. For example we have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/American-Innovative-Teach-Talking-Nightlight/dp/B003D7KV0Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301505747&sr=8-1
You set the 'green alarm' time, and at that time the clock turns green. Then you explain to your kid that they don't leave their room until it is green. At least that is the theory. Our daughter is almost 2, and while she recognizes the green, and talks about it a bit, she doesn't wait for it before getting up.
There are also clocks that have a bunny that walks, etc. same concept. Reviews on amazon seem positive, so I think maybe our daughter is a bit young to have this self control.
Other than that, a baby gate, or child lock on the door combined with using a monitor. If our daughter gets up too early, she cries for us, we come get her, tell her it is too early to be up, and to go back to bed. Then we put her back in the bed and go back to sleep (same ritual as at night when she doesn't want to stay in bed at bed time). The first time we had to do this 6+ times in one night, the next night just a couple times.

Real life?
Here is another version made by DCI.
This is the one I have in my classroom.
Also, when I start my radicals unit, I put post-its with all radicals equal to the hour over the numbers on my "regular" clock in the room.
This: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lumie-Bodyclock-STARTER-Wake-Up-Features/dp/B002TEXEAI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1464127039&sr=8-3&keywords=sunrise+alarm+clock+light
You need that. Had a room with very little light in it a lot of the and that made waking up so much easier! Plus you can set it to automatically dim itself so as you're going to bed you're lulled to sleep.
