I'm 16, so I may be able to help you a bit with what would look good on you, since I wear this stuff.

  • Docker's Alpha Khaki: Grab a few pairs of Dockers alpha khaki's, they have them at Macy's - if you don't have a Macy's near you, you can order online. The grey, navy, and tan are all good colors.

  • GAP's skinny selvedge: We here at MFA love raw jeans, but not every teenager can afford them. Gap has some fairly cheap ($35) 1969 jeans that are fairly nice. Get them in a dark indigo wash. If you don't like the gap jeans just remember get a pair that is slim (but not skin tight) and dark indigo is a great color to get them in.

  • Target's Merona V-neck: Your shirt seems kind of odd in this photo, the V is really deep, and as others have said it's best not to get such a deep V unless you are more on the muscular side. Target's merona brand has a great V-neck shirt that is pretty good on fit and has a lot of colors. Their crew necks are good too, but its just personal preference. I personally like the crew necks more because they fit my body type better.

  • OCBD's (Oxford Cloth Button Down): This is a button up shirt made of oxford cloth (heavier than the average "dress" shirt, lighter than flannel) and has a button down collar. You can get these at a variety of stores but MFA typically recommends Jcrew, get them in slim. If that's too pricey gap makes some fairly ok OCBD's. Its a great shirt for fall/winter with layering and spring by itself (but you can layer if you feel like it, might be too hot) its not much of a summer shirt because it can get hot if you are in 80 degree weather+

  • Shoes: Van's authentic's are good shoes. Off white is a good color. Once it get's to fall/winter you may want a boot. I own a pair of red wings, but obviously everybody can't buy them since they are fairly expensive. The Katahdin's are also good, but again - to a teenager they might be pricey. You could go with Clark's but they aren't great for winter (the crepe sole has a tendency to absorb water, which isn't good if you want dry feet) but they will do OK if you aren't walking around too much in rain/slush. If you want boots you may have to pay a bit more... but it will be worth it since they will last, and they are very stylish. If you get the right pair, you will definitely get some compliments.

  • Sweaters: Cardigan's, Sweater's, they are great. I actually made a post about this today. Jcrew has some great sweaters, a bit more expensive than other brands but I hear they last for a very long time and are high quality. Banana republic also has some great options. Gap makes a great cardigan that I am going to buy tomorrow.

  • Jackets: Get one in black/olive/or brown. The guide over in the sidebar is great for jackets, they are a long subject and it would be hard for me to cover all of them in this comment. EDIT: Also, vests - if you can pull that shit off, wear one, on the right person they look great. Like this

    As a few final tips:

  • Make sure your belt matches your shoes in color.

  • Make sure your pants fit you well, you shouldn't be able to fit more than 2 fingers in between your waist and your pants.

  • Shirt and shoes shouldn't match.

  • Button up's shouldn't be too long, if its long it is meant to be tucked in, and it looks odd because me and you usually wouldn't be tucking in our shirts.

  • Fit is very important. Make sure it fits well before you buy it (but not so well that when you wash it, it shrinks up and you can't wear it).

  • As others have said, cut your hair.

MFA is a great community, but a few people criticize things pretty harshly, don't feel offended if this happens, its happened to most of us here.

Five top value watches

This is my opinionated list of the five best value watches on the market, based on personal experience. I own all five, so I do have first hand experience of them. These watches cover a wide range of styles and there are no homages amongst them.

From left to right these are:

  • Timex Expedition Military Field
  • Seiko Black Monster
  • Magrette Moana Pacific Chronograph PVD
  • Seiko Cocktail Time
  • Hamilton Intra-Matic

The Timex Expedition is a no-brainer at $45. It has fresh clean styling, lovely skeletonized hands and a really nice cut-away detail for the hour markers in the chapter ring. The Indiglo back light and 10 year battery life are just icing on the cake. Yes, it's a quartz movement and has a mineral crystal but it's unbeatable at the price. I wear this watch regularly despite owning watches that cost vastly more. Good review over at Worn & Wound.

The Seiko Black Monster the undisputed top dog in value-for-money mechanical watches and a gateway drug for many. It simply has it all: fantastic build quality, excellent bracelet, best-in-industry lume and a lovely face. This is quite simply the most pleasant to read watch I own. That it's also one of the cheapest is amazing. The only real downside is that it has a Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire but in practice this isn't a problem as the bezel stands proud of it, protecting it nicely. $205 from Amazon.

The Magrette Moana Pacific Chronograph PVD is a much lesser known piece from the boutique New Zealand brand. This is one of those watches that is just impossible to capture in photos due to its jet black, but very glossy, PVD finish. In the flesh it looks like something that costs 10x more. The movement is a hand-wound Chinese Seagull item, but users generally report that it is reliable, and it looks great through the display back. It sports 500m water resistance, sapphire crystal and comes with a rubber strap also. $500 direct from Magrette.

The Seiko Cocktail Time is easily the best value dress watch that I know of. It's stunning looking in the flesh mostly thanks to the way that the sunburst face and chisel hands reflect the light. The blued second hand is a lovely touch also. I have it here on a Hirsch leather strap but the one it comes with suits it nicely too. Bizarrely, many online retailers use a shot of this watch that completely fails to capture its characteristics e.g. compare this review with the product page on Amazon. $440 from Amazon.

Finally, the Hamilton Intra-Matic. This is really a first-rate re-issue from Hamilton. It's a gorgeous slender piece (10mm), with really refined detailing. It's subtle and understated, but has a nice ETA 2892-2 movement, sapphire crystal and a very nice pebbled leather strap that suits the aesthetic beautifully. It dresses up or down quite comfortably. Check out the Worn & Wound review. The stainless steel silver-faced one in 38mm size is definitely the one to go for IMHO. ~$600 from Amazon

EDIT: Fixed Magrette model name, thanks /u/KORNSTAR

Hi folks! I posted a thread to MFA a few weeks ago and was told that I might want to x-post it here, too. I tried posting it as a text-only post but it got auto-moderated away, so now I'm posting it as an image. Apologies if this is inappropriate for this forum or if there's not interest in it here!

Initially, I'd asked MFA for tailoring advice on my upcoming nuptials and made a followup post, linked above. The fit wasn't quite perfect (especially given my limited budget), but I'm happy with how everything turned out. If you want to read more about the wedding itself, look here or here.

For reference, I'm around 6'1" and 195 lbs.

>Items and Costs

My outfit consisted of the following items. I waited for sales on the bigger things and bought them well in advance of the ceremony, and in the end everything cost around $600, including alterations.

Shoes: AE Walnut Strands - $100. I got them at Last Chance in Phoenix, AZ. They had maybe half a dozen pairs at the time in various sizes, as well as tons of other AE shoes. As I understand, they sell returns, exchanges and poor selling/overstocked items from Nordstrom. I've also gotten beeswax CDBs there ($30) and Chuck Taylors ($15). The shoes themselves were well constructed and pretty, though I used a bit of brown shoe polish to darken them slightly (they were too orange for my tastes before).

Pocket Square: Golden Bronze Royal Silk - $20. There were gold bits in the paisley pattern on the tie that I thought it went well with. I also like the blue/gold/brown/bronze color combo. The PS was larger and a bit thicker and stiffer than the other ones I own, but didn't pose any problems for it.

3-Piece Suit (bought as separates): Bar III Midnight Blue - $250. I waited for one of Macy's twice a year sales, found a coupon code that stacked with the sale, and bought a couple different sizes of the various suit components, returning the ones that didn't quite fit. The fabric and everything seemed nice! And I rather liked the color. My only other suit right now is a lightweight, light grey seersucker 2-piece, so I might get a Bar III Charcoal at Macy's if a good sale comes up some time.

Boutonnière: This gold thing from Amazon - $10. I wanted something small and pretty that went with the other parts of the outfit and ultimately chose this.

Tie: Bigass Paisley from thetiebar ("23037: BIGASS PAISLEY-BROWN"), though I can't seem to find it now... - $20. The quality and construction seemed good, especially at this price point!

Shirt: Costco Slim Fit Light Blue - $20. I liked the fabric and color, but before tailoring it was pretty billowy, even with a "slim" fit. The fabric's also not very soft, and after 9 hours of wearing it I developed a bit of chafing on my neck from the collar.

Undies (lol): ExOfficio Boxer Briefs and Airism V-neck - $15. Picked them up on various sales over the years. Super comfy! Great for backpacking, too!

Socks: Target Anchor Socks - $4. I got my grandpa the same pair (once upon a time he was a sailor). They're not the best built socks, but I liked the pattern and color.

Belt: Bought at a thrift store a long time ago... - $10

Watch: Timex Expedition - $25. I got some flak for going with this over a more formal watch on MFA, and it was a close call the day of (I brought a few watches with me) but ultimately I ended up feeling this one the most. I bought it through a recent sale on here, actually. It's become my go-to wear-with-flannel-and-jeans watch.

Ring: My (now) wife made me mine! Cost for the silver - $5. She ordered some wire from riogrande.com, cut it, bent it into a circle, soldered the two ends together, and then shaped and polished it. Pretty straightforward overall!

Alterations on shirt, pants, jacket, and vest - $130. The tailor made some changes to the shoulders and back of the jacket to accommodate some injury-related asymmetry, took the jacket, shirt, and vest in at the waist and through the torso, shortened the jacket sleeves a smidge, and took the butt/thighs out on the pants (I had to go 2" up in the waist so that was a little loose, but fine with a belt, so I didn't take it in. The legs/crotch/butt were still a bit tight though, so I had him take those out). According to him, the jacket was a bit small for me (it was a 44R) and that caused the dimpling on the shoulder, but I don't think that was too noticeable. Originally, the outfit looked like this.

Alrighty, lets give this a go.

> What colours look good with what?

It depends. You can't go wrong with a black or navy watch face, with a steel case. Stay away from anything gold since it can look super tacky if not done exactly right. If you want a more casual/military look you can get a watch with a PVD (black) case, but these don't age very well in my experience.

If you want something that is sporty, orange watches can look amazing, such as the cult-favourite Seiko Orange Monster.

>Should my watch match my pants?

Doesn't matter, sorta. For 99% of what you will be wearing, as long as you match the watch (in particular the strap, more on that later) to the occasion everything will be just fine. You don't wear an Orange Monster to a funeral, nor do you wear a dress watch to the beach.

Changing the strap on a watch can totally change the looks. You can take a sporty Fleiger style watch on a bright NATO strap and put it on an ostrich leather strap. It can now be worn at pretty much any formal event including weddings and funerals.

> Hair?

That's a new one. I honestly have no idea how one would match a watch to their hair, but seeing as I am currently wearing my watch on a bright orange NATO and have a mohawk (long story) I guess it is sorta possible.

Serious answer: Don't worry.

>When should I go for simplicity and when should I go for elegance?

It is personal preference. I like watches that are as mechanically complex as possible, since it appeals to the engineer side of me. I also like my watches to be extremely readable, since I use them for flying at night, where I NEED to be able to read them in the dark with a quick glance.

Others like their pieces to be as minimal as possible. It is up to whatever you like. On the other hand, you need to make sure your watch fits the occasion. No massive dive watches while meeting The Queen.

Now that we have your questions out of they way, here are my suggestions for some quality watches on a reasonable price point.

If you are looking for a good-for-everything watch, you have a few options. If you are looking for an automaitc watch (no battery, purely mechanical) you really can't beat the SKX007. It has excellent durability, classic looks, and the lume (glow stuff on the dial) is excellent. There is no battery to die, although you may need to get it services in a decade (or get a new one). Leave it on the bracelet for a sporty everyday look that can go with a suit, to a wedding, or a funeral. Throw it on a NATO strap (how I wear my watch every day) for comfortable everyday wearing. Get different coloured straps for different things, and change it up. A new strap can make it look like a totally different watch.

If you want something that will do almost any occasion without a mechanical movement, basically any Citizen Eco-drive will do the job. I myself like the Citizen Nighthawk, although it might be because I'm a pilot. The slide rule on the outside is great for addition/division (how much to tip, how much tax, etc.) and it will tell a second time zone.

If you are looking to make a statement, there is nothing that tops the Seiko "Orange Monster". This thing is built like a tank, the utomatic movement is proven, and the lume is out of this world. It also comes as the "Black Monster" if you want to be a bit more subtle.

If you are looking for a dress watch, I would recommend the Orient "Union" as it has a durable, in-house movement and great looks.

If you are looking for something badass that will be great for nighttime, there is the Traser Code Blue. It is a very durable quartz watch designed for military operations. It has vials of tritium (hydrogen with two neutrons) and will glow without any exposure to light for at least a decade.

If you are looking for a digital watch, I would recommend either the Casio Mudman if you are looking for a large, indestructable watch (That is also allowed for space travel by NASA) or the Casio F91W which is much slimmer, but less durable.

Possibly one of the best deals in "stylish" watches is the Timex Weekender. The come in a million different colours, have an electric illumination, and are very stylish and durable.

STAY AWAY FROM FASHION WATCHES!!! These include brands like Fossil, Nixon, etc. They are basically the same movement out of a $5 Wal-Mart special in a shiny case. Stick to reputable brands such as Casio, Seiko, Citizen, Timex, etc. If you are unsure about a brand, find a thread on the Watchuseek forums about that brand and that thread will probably tell you all you need to know. Also, stay away from Invicta. That company has shitty quality control and makes sub-standard products.

My advice would be to get the SKX007 on the bracelet, and then grab a few NATO straps. I have had great customer service interactions with Clockwork Synergy. Their straps are of decent quality, and their service is second-to-none. If you have a little cash left over, grab the F91W for chores are hiking, or anywhere you may need a stopwatch and illuminated face (i.e. Flying).

YES! Be careful for a lot of things with vintage watches.

If you go vintage, you will want to make sure it is the correct (original) watch you think you are getting. This is difficult sometimes since they don't always have the original box or paperwork (In which case you need to have people who are experts let you know if it is original. Can be a PITB). There are some cool vintage watches in your price range, but vintage watches may need a service (cleaning, oiling, gasket change) done to them before they should be worn.

Here's 3 routes you could go that I think would work:

  1. Ask him what he wants. If you don't need it to be a surprise, then ask him what's next on his list (he might have) and buy it for him. If it is new and in your price range, that is great! If it is vintage, you might be able to buy the whole thing and get it serviced for $600 too! If it is pricier than your budget allows, maybe split it, contribute the $600, or use the $600 to pay for part of it and a service (if the watch is not bought new and needs it).

  2. If you want it to be more of a surprise, then ask him what style he likes or wants and buy a new watch within your budget in that style. Too many people on here are throwing around great watches, but none of them know what style your son likes or wants next in a watch. Check with him or get a picture/list of his exact collection and we might be able to make a guess.

  3. Buy him 3 SKX007s. You will assert yourself as the alpha parent, and he will love you forever.

    Don't do #3 though. Seriously. It's a bad joke.

EDIT: Just saw the collection. I have no idea what he would want next. I would talk to him and ask now that you have more of an interest in watches yourself. He doesn't have a diver, but that might not be his style (so maybe, as long as he isn't against the diver style). He has a lot of black and stainless. I like that combo myself, but he might want to change it up. He might even want a nicer beater like a G-shock which would be great since many fall into your budget. I would talk to him and listen to what he likes or wants next if it is something specific or a certain style in particular.

EDIT 2: Suggesting talking to him since, if he is like me, he may have certain things about watch design he can't stand and would never want on a watch, but then see something that breaks his rule. We are a weird creature, people. Can't explain why we like what we like and don't what we don't sometimes. I'm sure he'll be happy his mother is taking an interest in his interests and cares enough to do this for a gift! All the best!
u/JewWhore · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'd say buy 2 or 3 for $50 to $100 each. I bought 3 watches (for less than $100 total) before I finally figured out what I like wearing. My first watch was a chronograph on a steel bracelet. I learned very quickly what I do and don't like in chronographs (this one had many features I disliked), and I figured out that, like you, I dislike steel bracelets. I still have that one, but I don't wear it. After that I figured out that I like divers, so I ordered one of those. It turned out I didn't know enough about watches and bought something that didn't fit at all. I figured out where I went wrong, and bought a third watch. It is the one that /u/fragilestories recommended, the Casio mdv106. I wear this watch daily. I think it was nice to have a few and wear each for a while, and doing that let me get the perfect watch. Now that I know what I like, I know that when I spend $200 to $300 on my next watch it will be great. I am planning to upgrade to the Seiko SKX007, which will be my first mechanical watch. I guarantee that I will wear it every day once I have it.

Think about what you want to use your watch for. Will you look at it in class when writing the date on your papers? Get a date window. Want to time things? You need a chronograph. Figure out what features you will use and go from their. Or go for what you think looks the coolest, even if it has different features than you would use.

Also, look through this sub and think about what looks you like. Do you like numbers? Roman numerals? Symbols? What colors do you like? What straps do you like (these are pretty easy to change, but you will have to add straps into your budget if you want something other than what the watch comes with).

Here are 3 watches that will give you a good variety. These 3 will let you rotate watches, change your style, and figure out what features you like and don't like. The three together fit your price point (or are very close).

I love diver's watches, and would start with this: Casio mdv106:
https://smile.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467354240&sr=8-1&keywords=casio+mdv106

I like some chronographs, especially the ones symmetrical across the right and left faces. The Timex weekender is great:
https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Unisex-TW2P623009J-Weekender-Display/dp/B00QIJ62M2/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1467354305&sr=1-3&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+weekender

Maybe you'll find you don't like any complications on your watch (I personally do not like date windows. I think watches look better without them. However, I do use it every day on my watch, so I have a begrudging appreciation for them). Here's another Timex without anything but an hour, minute, and second hand:
https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Weekender-Fairfield-Quartz-Casual/dp/B0194L6AMC/ref=sr_1_7?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1467354305&sr=1-7&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+weekender

Tl:dr You won't know what you like until you've worn a few different watches. A $150 budget is enough to buy several watches, so do that and pick a favorite.

u/[deleted] · 14 pointsr/TeenMFA

At least 5 hoodies/cardigans/sweaters Hoodies and sweatshirts are gonna be your most casual bet, followed by crew sweatshirts and thicker cardigans. Thinner cardigans and vnecks are gonna be more smart-casual additions to your wardrobe. Colours like navy, grey and dark grey are gonna be your best bets year-round.

I’ve been lurking on this sub for about a year now (username checks out) but this is my first post. My wife gave me the box as a wedding gift when we got married last month, so I figured it’s about time to share my collection. As you can probably tell, I’m not really a fan of bracelets, so I’ve been experimenting with nato and perlon straps. For reference, I have 6.75” wrists. And sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures, collecting watches is my new hobby, not photography! Below is a little story about each watch.

Timex

I’m 28 years old and I was never a watch guy until I saw a picture of someone wearing this watch last year. I knew nothing about watches when I purchased it, but for $50 I decided to pick one up. I love the clean dial and I think the black case goes well with the light brown band, but the loud ticking was a bit annoying. This was my only watch for about two months, but after spending a lot of time on this sub I decided to venture into the world of automatics. This is now my “beater” watch, and since the box only holds four watches, this one has been relegated to the nightstand drawer.

Seiko

After reading r/watches high praise for Seiko 5s, I purchased one as my first automatic. I went with the blue dial because the Timex was black, and I really enjoy the color, especially in the sunlight. The stock band was pretty crappy, but I love this watch now that I switched over to a leather nato.

Tisell

After purchasing the Seiko I was getting more and more interested in watches, and fell in love with Fliegers. I wanted a Stowa but couldn’t justify the price. After seeing a picture of a Tisell posted on this sub, I knew this would be my next watch. This is now my go to watch for work. The band is surprisingly good and the domed sapphire crystal really makes this watch stand out. My only complaints are the power reserve and lume could be better.

Orient

Spending more and more time on this sub, I knew I was getting hooked. The Rolex Polar Explorer II is one of my dream watches but I can’t quite afford one yet, so I had to find another white dial watch to hold me over. Again, based on this sub’s love of Orient, I decided on the Mako USA, and I’ve been extremely happy with the purchase. I wore this watch at my wedding and bought my groomsmen black and blue Makos for their gifts. Everyone was extremely pleased!

Citizen

This is my most recent pickup, and what I’ve told myself is going to be my last watch for a while (yeah, right). The rest of my collection is made up of pretty simple/basic designs so I needed something a little louder. At first the dial looks a bit cluttered, but it’s actually very easy to read. I prefer mechanical watches, but if I’m going to go quartz, the Ecodrive is pretty cool tech… I guess it’s time for me to learn how to use a slide rule!

u/Valarauka_ · 19 pointsr/Watches

So I've worn watches since I was a kid, but only recently got into mechanicals and I've been fascinated ever since. I've always been a one-watch guy, but that "one" has gone through a ton of evolution before finally reaching here.

For the longest time I wore super cheap Casio models: F91W etc., progressing to other sporty digital plastic stuff like the Timex Ironman.

Wanting something classier looking, but still not knowing anything about watches, my next move was to a snazzy-looking Guess piece, which lasted me a good while until a tragic end involving an unscrewed crown and a dip in a pool. D:

Looking for a replacement is when I found this sub and fell headlong into horology. Pored over all the buying guides trying to figure out what I liked; picked up a Timex Expedition to tide me over while I did my research.

Right off the bat, I knew it had to be:

  • a chronograph: in equal parts because I love the look of chrono subdials, and because I love timing things.
  • automatic: more impressive engineering imo, and less needy for a daily wearer.
  • with a display back: because I'm not going to get a watch for its movement and then not even be able to look at it.

Okay, so automatic chronographs. Christopher Ward seemed like a well-regarded entry-level brand; browsing their collection, I found and was initially smitten by the C700 Grande Rapide (pic from here, it doesn't seem to be listed on the CW site anymore). "Valjoux 7750" -- hmm, what's that? Thus I discovered a somewhat surprising fact - auto chrono movements are few and far between.

Suddenly presented with so many other 7750s, the luster wore off a bit. The ubiquitous 12-6-9 dial with boxy day/date cutout that I saw on almost every watch I looked at just wasn't doing it for me anymore, though I did find and fall in love with the IWC Portuguese -- sexiest watch ever, particularly in blue/silver, but a little too dressy for my style. Not to mention way more than I wanted to pay -- although Hamilton does a credible homage in the Maestro, for a lot less dosh -- but they put the date cutout back in. The Carrera 1887, while not a Valjoux, fell into the same bucket.

Speedys seemed a lot more my style -- more tool than bling -- but the Pro wasn't automatic, the Reduced sub-dials just looked way too small and far apart, and the DSOTM was a bit too large for my smallish wrists (and again, mucho dinero). Although the cal. 9300 is a stellar piece of work; maybe someday!

Throughout my search, one other name kept coming up: El Primero. Arguably the first, in my mind the coolest (hi-beat, integrated, column-wheel), certainly the only one still standing from the original three movements that launched in 1969 -- the other two being the Seiko 6139 and the Chronomatic from an alliance of Heuer, Breitling, and a few others.

I was initially looking at the classic A386-style dials; hadn't even heard of the Rainbow series, but when I saw this one while idly browsing listings on WUS I immediately fell in love.

Hope you enjoyed the read! I feel like I could talk about chronographs forever now...

Most "minimal" quartz watches have <10 USD movements in them so what you are paying for is fashion. These are the MVMT, Daniel Wellington, Nixon, Fossil, ect. You can buy them if you like the way they look, there is nothing wrong with that, but know they are built fairly cheaply and marked up to +$100 for no reason other than fashion. You can checkout DHGate and buy a fake DW watch for $7-12 from China that will be identical in quality to the actual DW watch, and could potentially even come from the same supplier! (not recommending, just commenting)

It really depends on what styles you like and how much you want to spend.

Watches I would recommend that are in my opinion minimal:

Casio Men's A158WA-1DF.
Its not super aesthetically minimal, but its ultra cheap, I think it is relatively stylish, impeccably reliable, easy to read, good features (light, alarm, stopwatch, long battery life). This watch got me through a year aboard a Nuclear Submarine and served me well as an alarm clock, stop watch, and time keeper. It dresses up and down very easily, and I wore it to dinner in foreign ports as well as in the engine room taking logs on equipment. I still have it in my rotation. At 33mm thick, with an 18mm band that tapers, this watch has a very low profile, minimal wrist presence. For 12 bucks you cant not want one.

Junkers Bauhaus
Much more expensive, especially for an entry level piece, but very well made. Mechanical, Japanese movement, built in Germany, certain to impress watch enthusiasts and normies alike. Its automatic, meaning it does not have a battery, and a mechanism winds the watch up due to the movement of your wrist throughout the day. This also means that if you dont wear it for a few days it can stop running, but all you need to do is give it a shake and set it again to get it going. There are some quarts models by Junkers that are cheaper, also even some models with Automatic Swiss movements, worth taking a look. Some cool features this watch has are the power meter, so know by how much the movement is wound as well as ability to perform as a 24hr watch for military time. Easily made a dress watch but good as an everyday casual watch as well. 41mm case, so it will wear very modern (ie large).

Sieko 5
This watch is not as minimal in the aesthetic sense, ie the face has more than just tick marks at each hour, and it has both day and date functions. It is another automatic, and I will argue that it is still pretty minimal. At ~50-60USD is is a perfect entry level choice for a first automatic/mechanical watch, and comes in several colors. Well made for the price. At 37mm it wears much smaller than most popular fashion watches (one of the reasons I recommend it as a minimal watch). It will suit you in both casual and fomal settings, and will appeal to both watch nerds and every day people. Not gaudy or pretentious like a Swiss made, gold piece, but it has some character and soul. I would recommend if you buy this watch to also pick up a band, as the one supplied from Sieko is uncomfortable and unattractive in my opinion. The watch will do well on a Nato band, or a light tan leather band (check out the amazon reviews user photos)

Casio Men's MQ24-7E
Another Casio, not as versatile since it is very casual, but undeniably minimal. Very similar to the watch worn by the Pope. If you want ultra cheap, reliable, and analog this is a good choice.

There are many, many other good choices out there. Good Luck, and I hope this helped!

MVMT watches are well known for being low quality "fashion" watches. These fashion brands are usually aimed at a younger audience so it makes sense they advertise on podcasts. In my eyes they aren't even worth the ~$100 price point. Sure they'll last a while, but so has my 10 year old Timex I got for 20 bucks, or some dollar store one I got as a kid.

If you are actually looking for a quality ~$100 watch, look at Seiko, Citizen or Orient. /r/watches is a very good place to learn, and you might find, like countless other beginners, that the Seiko SNK-809 is for you (my first "good" watch was the SNK-807), which is $50-$70 and a real mechanical automatic ("perpetual" for those of you across the pond) movement. Anything from Seiko 5 range is an incredible starter automatic watch.

Do some research if an automatic movement vs quartz movement is right for you (quartz is the basic battery operated watch that the "guts" can be found in watches ranging from $500 Movados to dollar store watches). I REALLY like seeing how things work so I really appreciate the mechanics behind an automatic watch. The downside to them is that they aren't as accurate as quartz (a normal range of inaccuracy is like +-10 seconds a day). But you'll never have to change a battery if that is any consolation. If that puts you off, keep in mind that a $10,000 Rolex has an automatic movement good for +- 5 seconds per day. And as a final PSA, stay away from Invicta. Their automatic movements, cheap pricing, and flashy looks may look enticing, but quality control is horrendous. Just as with any potential purchase, do some research on a watch you think looks promising. Give the model name a search on google or /r/watches and try to find a consensus.

For those of you who have been thinking they want a watch but haven't started exploring styles (which is the demographic companies like MVMT pander to with their styles) here is the classic "diver" style watch with the Rolex Submariner. A cheaper automatic dive watch I've been wanting for a LONG time is the Seiko SKX007, which obviously pays homage to the Sub, but is about $5800 cheaper. I'd replace the bracelet with something better than what is there though. Maybe I'll get it after college...

Another well loved cheap diver is from Orient, the Mako, though I prefer its big brother, the Ray, even though that is even closer looking to the Submariner.

The absolute best in budget vs quality in a dive watch is the ~$40 Casio MDV-106. You can get a decent 22 mm steel bracelet for almost the price of the watch and it will look fantastic if that is your preference. I've borrowed my brother's a few times and the thing feels like quality and has been put to the test plenty of times to prove itself as a real dive watch. He goes swimming, hiking, plays sports with it, drops it on concrete, etc. Rugged yet elegant looking. Good size too. Highly recommended first diver or first watch!

If you are looking for a real dress watch with "minimalist design" that doesn't look tacky like MVMT's (sorry, just my opinion), there are plenty in the Seiko 5 line like I said, or the lovely Orient Bambino.

Came back to say that if you don't really know if you want a watch, don't think you need to spend $100 on your first. Who knows, you might not like how it feels or looks on you or whatever. For the absolute cheapest of cheap, get yourself a Timex or Casio quartz watch. These brands are well renowned for their reliability. This way you'll end up spending only $15-20 on a watch that will last and work forever (obviously with battery changes along the way).

Sorry in advance, the images are out of order and repeat.
Was in India when I bought the Titan. Had instant Buyer's remorse because my heart was actually dedicated to the other Titan of the same edge series found here . Only the one shown here has silver accents, but the one I wanted in the show room was all black (shiny black instead of silver. So the watch was thin as a razor's edge all blacked out. Never could find an image of that exact watch anywhere on the internet nor have I come across the watch since.) Anyways the one I have looks great for interviews in a grey suit and considering it was a gift (bought) by my grandmother, I wasn't going to complain. This is my [titan watch] (http://www.amazon.com/Titan-1518SL01-Ultra-3-5mm-Watch/dp/B007NM72UE/ref=sr_1_106?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1398352723&sr=1-106) and it's the nicest watch I own and thus have only worn it 7 times... :-s The strap on this watch is such nice quality. I'm half considering to sell this watch off because I just don't wear it enough!
The [citizen Ecodrive] (http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8240-03E-Eco-Drive-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000EQS1D8/ref=pd_sbs_watch_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0AG5MCX6N98YERK52EHT) I bought at duty free when I was on an Alaska cruise. This was/is my daily watch until I got the Luch just a month ago. Durable, extremly light, simple design and has date and day which I find to be extremely useful. Never have to worry about winding/charge/ battery because the whole face is a solarpanal. for $100 2 years ago, I thought it was a bargain. Wore it every single day, absolutely love it. The strap is getting well worn down, any suggestions would be appreciated. Was thinking about going for a dark/deep brown leather strap of sort.

Lastly, my Luch russian watch, mechanical hand wound from the 70's I got recently from my girlfriend as a late valentine's gift. Was stalking a simple design JUST like this on e-bay forever and I wanted to buy a mechanical watch to add to my collection. Saw this on the listing and absolutely fell in love. With a price $60 shipping from Ukrain, I thought it very reasonable. Never did see the exact same watch listed again (especially not in this quality). I don't even know the precise model of this watch. I expected to get ripped off and get a non functional partially broken mechanical watch but it works like a charm and keeps time well (as far as I can tell). Though I'm not sure how many turns I'm supposed to wind it so I know I under-wind the watch thus have to keep up with it more frequently. Still new to mechanical watch care/ maintenance. However, this is my daily watch now, unless I'm getting dirty or wet, I use my Citizen.

That's all I got, these 3 watches. Hopefully my collection will grow over time. Cheers.

I'm 16 now, and I hope to continue collecting in the future. I've listed my watches in the order I got them, and why I got them (if there's a reason). I'll also include an Amazon link if you'd like to check it out, and the photos were taken in front of my windows, which I haven't cleaned in a while, so ignore that \^-\^

Sekonda 'Party Time' (3363.27)

I got this 5 years ago (when I was 11) in Heathrow because I thought it looked nice. My tastes have changed a lot. The battery died, but I thought I might as well show it in the collection!

Amazon

Apple Watch Sport 42mm Space Grey
This subreddit doesn't seem to like smart watches much, and I get it. The battery dies within a day, and I hardly use it nowadays. I got this for my birthday, sometime in April this year, and it got me used to having a watch on my wrist at all times. It's on a cheap metal bracelet, which I wouldn't recommend getting.

Amazon (Bracelet)

Citizen BF0580-57L (non Eco-Drive)

My first real watch! I got this from the US site, because I won an American gift card in a contest some time ago. I needed a watch for exams, since I started my GCSEs and they banned smart watches (for good reason). I don't wear it as often as I used to, but it was with me throughout most of my exams so I love it nonetheless.

Amazon

Citizen BM6010-55E

I got this after starting my first 'job', which was tutoring maths for primary school kids. Nothing really more to say about it, but it's a nice casual watch which I still wear pretty often if I'm just going out for groceries or to run errands.

Amazon

Bulova 96B104

Honestly, I just needed a dress watch that I could wear with a suit (for prom in this case) during formal occasions. The strap it came with was horrible and tacky, so I replaced it with a Hirsch Osiris which feels amazing and looks great.

Amazon (Strap)

Timex Weekender

I had some extra money on my Amazon account, so I decided to buy a watch I could wear during the summer (since I was going abroad and it would be really humid), and I saw great feedback on the Weekender so I bought it and an extra NATO strap.

Amazon

Seiko Presage SSA083J1

The one watch I keep wearing; I absolutely love it. I got it after getting my GCSE grades (5 As, 8 A*s and an A\^), and I wear it with me everywhere. It's a bit inaccurate, so I'd like to get it adjusted soon (does anyone know a good place in South London?), but I expected that with an automatic.

I'm taking a break from buying more watches for now, but I'd like to buy a Diver or Field watch some time in the future

Well this is not so special; sorry. Everyone comes to MFA with some backstory but every wants the same thing; to dress better. And the best way to do that is to read the sidebar. But I'm going to help you out while you read.

The best way to dress like Tony Stark (in my own humble opinion) is to dress casual-formal; that is to say dress up to formal then take it down. What this is going to entail is wearing jeans/denim with a button down shirt. Lose the tie though. So basically, the first piece of advice I'd give is Denim+Button down. Check out the denim guide; I can't speak too much about quality (I get what fits) but I personally buy from Gap, and their stuff is decent quality for the price. If you want to take it a step up, Raw Denim is the way to go. I know almost nothing about that so I can't help you there. Now when it comes to button downs, there are a couple of places to go. If you are anywhere near a Uniqlo, go there. They have extremely good quality stuff FOR THEIR PRICE POINT. You could probably pick up a good smattering of colored shirts; If not there, some other places that will have interesting patterns/color+good quality are J.Crew, Epaulet, Gap/Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers. I would recommend getting a bunch of colors and patterns, along with a few solid colors. Blue and Red are good colors that will match many colors of Denim. Get a few patterned shirts as well; I would recommend trying to keep the over shirt color 'light' though; nothing like Black and Green. If possible, stick to a pattern that is one color and white (e.g. blue and white).

If you want to take it a step further up, you can try out the Chino/BD style, which is more or less wearing well fitting chinos with a button down. This requires as much work as the denim/bd look, but you will end up with a slightly more monotone look (the most common chinos are khaki/black/grey). For this reason I would recommend that you consider getting some multi-colored pants; Red, Yellow, Green, Blue pants along with the standard colors will make you stand out. Some places to get these things are (again) J.Crew, Epaulet, Gap, Levi's, LL Bean, Lands End, and Bonobos. Bonobos tends to have more colors/patterns than others, but they are also much more expensive (less so with a referral) but I would recommend going to somewhere like Levi's or Gap and getting a pair of their $30-$50 colored pants. This look requires a lot more color matching, but the result makes you POP to the ladies.

As for the shoes, the shoe guide is quite good. Avoid sneakers, and perhaps look into getting a pair of these or These, MFA's favorite shoe. Both are different than sneakers and different than boat shoes. These are most winter/full pants shoes, so you'll have to look into a different pair for the summer.

I hope this helps.

If I were you I'd check out JCPenny if you can today.

They have several non-iron Stafford OCBD's for $15. I bought one of their fitted shirts and it fits and feels amazing. They also have gingham broadcloth shirts on clearance for $11. You can spend around $50 and pick up 4 nice shirts for work from them.

While you're there I'd also check out the Stafford wingtips if that's what you're looking for. Right now they're $50 and are widely accepted as one of the best buys for the $$.

If you're fine with chinos you should swing by H&M if there's one near you. I picked up two slim fit chinos (not skinny) for $15 each, and they fit me very well. I had to size down a size, but the fit is on point.

Shoes shirt and pants should be first I think. Once you pick up the shoes you want, you'll want a matching belt. At your budget I think I'd try somewhere like Marshalls for a cheap $5 belt that would last you a few seasons, until you make enough to buy a better quality one.

If you don't have to wear a tie, maybe consider investing in a watch. The Timex Weekender gets circlejerked a lot, but I think it's a wonderful starter watch. You can buy a couple of straps eventually, and that would let you have another piece to help rotate work outfits.

To recap:

  • 4 shirts for $50 at JCPenny

  • Stafford Wingtips for $50 at JCPenny

  • 2 pairs of chinos from H&M for $30

  • A starter belt for ~$5

  • Timex Weekender for ~$30

Which leaves you with $35 to work with. You could buy a better belt for $40, or buy a couple of watch straps. You could buy more expensive shirts, or simply more shirts. Maybe more pants? All up to you, but I'd suggest the budget that I outlined.

Once you move to San Francisco, I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to Uniqlo in person to try on their OCBD's. The fit on their stuff can vary sometimes, but trying it on before you buy would save you that headache.

    Good luck, hope that helps

Descriptions with links

  1. Moleskin mini-notebook.

  2. Zebra F-301 Bold: Notebook and pen get dropped into my shirt pocket. On weekends, whether they come along is completely dependent on whether my shirt has a shirt pocket.

  3. Seiko 5 SNK793: Just got this last week actually, but I really like it. I had a Hamilton Jazzmaster before and, while a quality piece and I love the style, the case was just too big/heavy for my liking. I found myself wearing my Timex weekender on a NATO strap more and more. This has a very similar case size, although slightly thicker/heavier due to automatic movement. Something classy/understated enough for work.

  4. Maratac Copper AAA: I really love this thing. This is not the newest version (rev 3), so it only has low/high, but that's all I really need. Feels very solidly made, I have dropped it numerous times and it has nary a mark. Despite the exterior being solid copper, it isn’t as heavy as I thought it would be and I never even notice it in my pocket, even in dress pants. I leave the clip on so I can set it on my desk/counter and not have it roll off, but often don’t bother to clip it to my pocket. Sometimes I’ll clip it to my coin pocket in jeans but usually just leave it in my right pocket with my keys. I don’t know what to say other than that I really love this thing.

  5. Leatherman Squirt ps4: Very small, disappears into my pocket. Even in dress pants at work, I don't feel this weighing them down at all.

  6. Keysmart with 2 apartment keys: The rivets tend to come loose, which is a little annoying. May throw some Loctite or something on the threads to keep them be. Otherwise, I like it.

  7. Nexus 4: Love this phone. No intention of getting rid of it anytime soon. Unless they come out with a phone that will bake me cookies or dispense coffee, the only reason I'll move on is that this one dies.

  8. SOG Fielder: SOG Fielder. Just like guns, black means you obviously want to kill people but any kind of wood stock/handle means you probably just have it for utility. /s I actually really like this knife. Very classy, feels good in the hand, good weight. I get lots of compliments on it.

  9. Crappy wallet from Wal-mart or something

  10. Springfield Xds 3.3 in 9mm in a Crossbreed minituck
  • Love this pistol. Fun to shoot at the range and feels great in the hand. Well built, well balanced. So far, nearly 2k rounds in, no FTFs, no jams, no light strikes, nada. Trigger is a little stiff, but that kind of comes with the territory for a gun designed for CCW. I ordered the PRP trigger kit to lighten it a bit. Also, I’m probably going to have night sights installed soon. Nothing wrong with the stock ones, I just want night sights :).

Minituck holster is great. I hiked 10 miles in the White Mountains last weekend and hardly noticed this setup at all. Will most likely go with Crossbreed for future holsters. I can successfully tuck in a shirt around the gun if need be with this one. (I do not carry at work because my employer does not allow it)

Almost a year ago I made a post about how “working man’s” watches need to be recognized too. I posted the super beat up watch I wore to rock climb and it got a surprising amount of love. The next guy up to the task is nothing but a Timex Easy Reader with a black nylon NATO strap, and has been nothing short of reliable, functional, and even fashionable when necessary. Every feature on the watch, even down to the strap does not go without a use.

When in the midst of time-sensitive and sometimes dangerous activities like rock climbing, checking the time needs to be as fluid and easy as possible. The watch itself also needs to be inexpensive, lightweight, and durable. You may think this is a tall order, but surprisingly, Timex’s lower end watches fit the bill. This is why I chose the Weekender last time, and it’s why the Easy Reader has proved itself an amazing next choice. The giant digits prove its namesake and the bright red second hand provides nothing but reading clarity. The lightweight case and durable nylon strap allow me to climb with confidence and efficiency, as if the watch weren’t even there. The day/date feature is the cherry on top, making this thing a virutal wrist-calendar without sacrificing simplicity and legibility.

Oftentimes when I am out on a climbing trip I like to find a place to swim as well. Naturally, Timexes are freaking cockroaches, and the “WR 30M” label need fool no-one. This thing is straight up waterproof up to at least ten feet. And when camping, I make frequent use of the indiglo feature, as I hammock camp and there is nothing more frustrating than trying to reach for your phone in pitch darkness while stuffed in an Eno.

I’ve even worn the watch “out on the town” and have still gotten compliments on its understated and universally applicable design characteristics. In terms of fashion, this watch is a chameleon. It compliments anything I wear it with.

If you are an outdoorsman/woman but don’t like the gaudier sports watch options marketed to the outdoors, trust in the basics. They’ll do the job just as well without making you look like there’s a Squirtle strapped to your wrist.

Depending on what you are looking for, here are a couple of recommendations to keep your eyes peeled for while shopping. You might be able to find them at various stores around town, but I’ve sourced mine from Amazon with no issues:

Casio Men's AE1200WHD-1A Stainless Steel Digital Watch - World Time

This guy looks sharp, has a metal band, and hosts quite a few features such as: light, alarm, timer, stopwatch, and date display. Kind of a “dad watch” but very clean and practical for the price.

Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Duro Analog Watch, Black

This is a cool diver watch that is a huge bang for your buck. It looks quite a bit more expensive than it actually is. Has a one-way rotating bezel (dive function) that is very secure, a locking crown, and you can swap the band to tailor the look to what you are wearing. It is actually water resistant and I have seen people use it while diving. I put a striped nylon strap on mine to get that James Bond Rolex Submariner vibe.

Seiko Men's SNK809 Seiko 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Black Canvas Strap

This is probably my personal favorite. You can get it in a couple of different color schemes and I got mine (black) for around $60. This is an automatic watch so there are no batteries. It winds as you move, which is great if you wear it everyday, but not so much if you swap it out for a couple of days. It’s pretty small and lightweight and the lume (glow in the dark, Seiko is usually regarded at being very good for it) on the face is insane. While backpacking I’ve woken up in the middle night with the face still glowing as if I had just flashed it with light. You can swap the band on this as well, and I’ve found the NATO straps to be a little nicer than the standard canvas strap. It’s isn’t as dressy, but definitely a great watch. The movement is also a pretty unique Japanese movement that scrolls like most higher end watches instead of “tick tick tick” which can be loud and annoying at times.

There is also the Timex Weekender option. They are pretty cheap and you can find them everywhere. They are available in a ton of color options so for $100 you could probably grab a few different styles. They make a bunch of designs of them as well, but they are definitely just cheap everyday watches and can be quite loud.

Looking to get a new watch. I have a Samsung S2 classic and it just looks tacky with the band that it has. I'm going to get a new band for it, but I also want to expand and start a collection.

I want a nice, affordable watch that will look great on a brown leather NATO band.
This is what I've been looking at : Citizen Men's BM7100-59E https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004JKBEUM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=PPVS3DXW0J9G&coliid=IGA2E46UICJEF

I've also been looking at the Timex Weekender and from I've read that isn't a bad choice for the price, but a lot of people say it can be loud. It is a simple watch, and that is what I really want though I do like the chronograph look and function.
If anyone has had any experiences with the watches I listed I'd love to hear or other suggestions that would be great. I'd just like something that will look nice on a leather nato. The price range I'm looking at is about $50-200 bucks.

Right now I'm just looking for casual watches to wear. My great-grandfather had a nice gold Caravelle that Id like to take off it's expanding bracelet and put on a simple black leather band if I need something somewhat classy-ish.

There was a post I saw the other night listing decent starter watches, I'm just having a hard time deciding. I just don't want to blow money on a mistake because I know next to nothing about watches and maybe there's something I'm not thinking of that someone more experienced than me could pass along to a noob.
Thanks for taking the time reading this and I appreciate any help given.

u/J_F_Sebastian · 1 pointr/Watches

Thanks. I think I have pretty much given up on automatics for now, at least for a daily wear watch. I did some maths: based on my age, life expectancy statistics published by my government, the fact that I seem to get maybe 2.5 years out of a cheap $15 Casio digital before the plastic lugs break, and allowing for 2 unexpected re-purchases due to loss, theft, house fire, whatever, if I just keep buying Casios for the rest of my life I'm looking at $320. If I get an automatic and service it only every 10 years (which I understand is less often than ideal), and the services only ever cost $100 (which I understand is on the cheaper side), then an automatic is going to cost me a lot more than $320 over my life (unless I die 20 years early than expected, which I hopefully won't!). Even the services alone would cost more than the Casios, and that's ignoring the cost of the watch in the first place!

So if I'm going to switch from cheap Casios, it'll be for something quartz. To make a fair comparison I need to expect to buy 3 nicer watches (the first one, plus the two contingencies for loss/theft/fire). My budget is then $107 per watch and each watch needs to be able to last on average 17 years. That $107 needs to cover the watch and things like battery replacement, it's total cost of ownership. This is difficult, but not impossible: this Eco-drive I would trust to do it, if I treated it carefully, and it is a nice looking watch. I also admire the technology in it: I love that if it doesn't get light for a long time, it shuts down the mechanical part that drives the hands and date to save power, but keeps the quartz oscillator running in a lower power mode. Once it comes out of storage, it wakes the mechanics up and runs them fast/slow for a while until it drifts back into sync with the quartz. That's really sexy (for me).

However, I use my Casio's stopwatch very regularly, to keep track of e.g. how long the French press coffee I make at work every day has been brewing, or how long it's been since I started a drier running at the laundromat. Being able to just start a stopwatch going is much more convenient than remembering the time I started it and doing arithmetic every time I look at my watch. That Citizen, lovely as it is, would force me to use my memory and do arithmetic. It's not like I'm lazy or stupid, but the reason I wear a watch at all in this day and age is for convenience, and the Citizen would simply be less convenient than my Casios.

Now, if I could find a $107 watch that I could trust to last 17 years which has either a chronograph or a rotating diver's bezel, I think the switch would not cause me to lose too much convenience. Well, I'd lose the perpetual calendar that all digis come with, but that would annoy me 7 times a year, instead of many times per week, so I could live with it. But that is a real challenge, getting that much watch for that price. I'm also worried that analogue chronographs are just inherently impractical: there will be times of day where the hour/minute hand obscure my view of the chronograph hands and I won't be able to read it, which is the kind of thing that would really bug me (obvious placement of form over functionality in a utilitarian device drives me crazy).

It's insane how hard it is to beat a dirt cheap digital watch in terms of time-keeping bang per buck. The only upgrade that seems to make sense for me is to get a G-shock, which I can imagine lasting 17 years and can definitely come under my budget, even with battery changes. However, again, I use my stopwatch all the time, and the stopwatch reset button on G-shocks is almost always deeply recessed to lie flush with the case, making it very hard to operate. If I have to struggle with the edge of my fingernail or a pen to use my stopwatch, I may as well just use my damn cell phone.

Yes, I'm probably drastically over-thinking things, but I kind of enjoy taking a hyper-rational approach to little things like this (yeah, yeah, I'd be a lot of fun at parties. If I went to them). It means that if/when I actually buy a nice watch, I can be totally secure that I made the right choice for my situation, so I can't really regret my decision if I see a different really sexy watch later down the line.

Sorry for the gigantic reply. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

You need to read a lot from the sidebar. It will help. I know it's a lot to read and it's intimidating, but it's worth the time investment. Also start paying attention to what you think looks good. Movies, pictures, people on the street. whatever. with time you'll get better.

Everything is too big. Since corsair_002 did an amazing job, I'll try to just give a few specific recommendations. You dont need to take them, but it might help you get at least 1 good outfit going.

  • Get some slim fit tshirts in solid colors with no graphics or branding. Navy blue, dark grey, & medium grey are the first ones I would get for you. You are going to want to pay attention not only to where the shoulder seem lines up, but also to the diameter of the sleeves. Being so thin means that most mall brand shirts will not fit you in the sleeves. I would only buy shirts that fit you there. It makes short sleeve shirts really look good on a person.

  • Get some slimmer jeans. levis 513 or levis 511 in a dark wash like the rigid dragon color on the 511s. I would try the 511s first. if you are too uncomfortable in them, either give it a few days to get used to it, or try the 513s. Whatever the inseam is on your jeans now, you will want to try 2-4 inches shorter. You have what's called stacking, and when keeping things simple we dont want that much of it.

  • while plimsolls are awesome and cheap. Try van authentics in the color labeled "true white". Dont worry about keeping them white. They look better when they are a bit beat up. Dont expect them to last more than a year.

  • after you get plimsolls get some boots. clarks desert boots in the color labeled "beeswax" are cheap and look good. Chippewa gqs are the next cheapest, but decent looking boot. These will last you a few years.

  • ditch the glasses. Get contacts and get some sunglasses. I like rayban wayfayers, since you have what looks like brown hair I would get the color labeled "tortoise shell" with the green lenses.

  • I would grow your top hair out just a bit more and cut the sides shorter. Your haircut, glasses, & outfit are making you look boring. If I was you, I would fight that with a killer haircut. it can add a lot of attitude to your looks.

One thing you dont want to do is get some slim jeans, nice footwear, dope shades, a new haircut and then wear a big old baggy shirt like this. You are a slim guy. Keep it all slim.

There are so many great options under $500! As you noted, Swiss Made is pretty much out of the question at this price point, but that's okay. The brands that you are mainly going to be looking at here are the Japanese brands: Seiko and Orient. Here are my favorites from cheapest to most expensive, including links to where you can buy them.

  1. In my opinion, the absolute best automatic watch to start out with -- especially if you're not sure if you'll be collecting watches long term -- is a Seiko 5 ($55). With its solid automatic movement and exhibition caseback, it's an incredible value for the price. Swap in a brown leather strap and you have a very attractive watch for under $80 total.

  2. Of course you already know that the Orient Bambino V2 is another great option -- very similar to the Seiko 5 but a bit less casual and more high end in appearance. Retail on this one is $300, but it can usually be had for below $200. Long Island Watch had it on sale for $117 very recently but unfortunately it is now sold out.

  3. If you want a tool watch, something a little bit more rugged, definitely go for an Orient Ray II ($185) or a Seiko SKX007 ($199 - bracelet version linked but also available on a black rubber strap). I personally own both of those watches and they are both awesome.

Hope this helped. I would also recommend checking out some watch reviews on Worn and Wound. They specialize in affordable mechanical watches so there are plenty of pieces on there under $500. I could have mentioned some but there are too many good ones to name really. Take a look, maybe something might catch your eye!
u/crazindndude · 3 pointsr/Wet_Shavers

I have 3 watches, for different roles. They're all quite inexpensive because I'm not big ballin' just yet, but IMO look good and perform great.

  1. Seiko SNK809 "Seiko 5" - This is my dress watch. I swapped the band for a nice black leather with a butterfly clasp. Wear it pretty much only with a suit, which I've had to do a lot lately for interviews. Understated, elegant, and the only automatic I own.

  2. Timex Easy Reader - This is the workhorse. I bought a couple of nylon NATO bands and ditched the stock band. I wear this at work and pretty much in any casual setting. If I ding it or spill something on it, not the end of the world. Got it on sale for $15. Quartz movement and 10yr battery. Solid piece of work, classic Timex.

  3. Timex Expedition Chronograph - I like Timex. They make good stuff and it's functional. This is my most recent acquisition, Amazon had 50% off Timex watches for Cyber Monday. Also got a couple of NATO bands for this one - here's the black/grey stripe one I'm currently using. This watch kind of sits the middle ground of beater and dress. I wear it when going out for pretty much anything except work or formal stuff.

I want to recommend the $40 Casio MDV106. I have one as my knock-around watch. My only reservation is the crystal. It's cheap something, and has scratched up fairly easily. And with your lifestyle that may be a deal breaker. It's fine for a $40 watch, but could possibly be too scratched up for you. It's a great watch otherwise. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY

I don't know if the olive green is Army specific, or if it is also relevant to Marines – but the Victorinox INOX in green would be pretty cool: http://www.jomashop.com/victorinox-watch-241683-1.html

A cool Seiko, that's probably top of budget if SKX007 is the baseline, is the SBDN023. It's the new solar Tuna. There are a few color ways, but I'm linking the one that matches the SKX007 color which also seems to be the cheapest. Very cool watch. Wish I had a reason to own it. http://www.shoppinginjapan.net/lowercase-sbdn023

Another cool top of budget Seiko could be the SUN019. It's a horse of a watch, another I wish I had an excuse to own. Kinetic, which should be OK, but do google around and see if they stand up to physical abuse. https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Prospex-SUN019-Kinetic-Divers/dp/B00MCB9CJK

And as far as quartz divers go, Citizen's EcoDrive gives you a bunch of options.

The only link you provided that I approve of are the Sperry Top-Siders. I found the Ice to be very versatile and the solid black have recieved compliments as they aren't very common. Both versatile. Good with shorts and could even be formal enough for a summer wedding. Oatmeal, Sahara/Brown Buc Brown for a basic, well, brown.

For a watch I'll make a few personal suggestions. Of course, the Timex Easy Reader, Brown & Black. Bonus: Black face. This Seiko for a silver watch and I like this black Citizen Eco Drive as well.

Get some basic chino's in a good slim fit like the Dockers Alpha Khaki and some basic flat front shorts from Patagonia.

American Apparel for some staples. Cut down on your graphic tee's and get some plain stuff! I really like the Tri-Blend 50/25/25 Track Shirt for tee's, so comfortable. The black is actually a really dark grey, because of the nature of 'the blend', I really like it and it matches these dark grey twill plimsolls I have perfectly. They have great thin sweaters and cardigans too, browse what's available on Amazon, go on their website to see better images and what else they offer.

I don't mean to totally disregard your choices, I'm just showing you some items that I like, some good basics, and that's all I can muster before I head to bed.

Also, are you sure you're really a 32 inch waist at 6ft 150lbs?

u/Dougiebrowngetsdown · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

These watches are similar to the raymond weil:

(1) Daniel Weillington
(2) Bulova

Granted both significantly cheaper and most likely not as well made but it affords you the opportunity to seek other purchases while obtaining the same desired look.

As for shoes, you mention the Daltons, are you looking for a boot? If so, I can't really help you, I'm not a boot guy. Daltons are very nice, but also so expensive, but if you plan on taking care of them, perhaps wait for one of AE's (or amazon's) sales you should get them. Worth the investement. But, I'll give you some of my suggestions of shoes to pair with suits (and even jeans/less formal wear):

J&M from Macy's Either color is awesome.

Also these J&M

Both are awesome. Very comfortable, from a reliable shoe brand.

Woodbury Grain Briefcase from Cole Haan Very nice, it's youthful and professional. Not bulky or gaudy either, just a simple nice design.

So, both of the watches you linked are described as "fashion brand" watches. This means that a popular clothing company has taken a pre-existing quartz movement (usually) then put it into a casing of their choosing and branded it. These watches generally won't break, but they are usually poorer quality than watches made by genuine watch brands at approximately the same price point.

Timex is a good starting point for watches. They look good, hold up well, and generally have very few issues. They're also fairly inexpensive. They typically use quartz movements. Quartz movements use circuit boards and batteries to operate the watch. They're accurate, but the cheapest method for creating a watch.

The second primary method for a operating a watch is automatic movements. These can either be hand-wound by the dial on the side of the watch, or they use a small weight in the watch to automatically (see: name) wind the watch as you move. As your arm moves, the weight spins around and winds up the watch. Automatic watches are more expensive generally, but usually also higher quality.

A good brand for automatic starter watches is Orient. They have a number of offerings in the ~$100-$150 price range that are very very good quality for the money you're paying.

Here are some specific recommendations for watches that are a great bang-for-buck ratio:

  1. Orient Mako II (automatic, $169, "dive watch" style).

  2. Orient Bambino (automatic, $159, "formal" style).
  3. Timex Weekender (quartz, $37, casual)

  4. Seiko 5 Automatic (automatic, $70, "formal" style).

Generally speaking, most watches from Timex, Seiko, and Orient are all great, quality starter watches. I personally own an Orient Mako II in pepsi, which I love. Feel free to PM or check out /r/watches for more information.

Ok, I've been obsessing over this recently as it's my choice of Halloween costume as well.
The pic from /u/iforgotmypen came from here but if you follow that you'll be spending just under $400. This guy made a 'replica' of the backpack and is selling it for $185, but I found this backpack on ebay which is remarkably similar. It ships from Hong Kong, so if you want it by the 31st you'll need to order quickly. On this, you'll want to hang a vertical flashlight. Here is the cheapest one I could find. Yes, it comes in black. There's a lot of discussion over the watch but if you don't want to spend $925 for a Stowa Flieger (hard core drugs indeed) then this is decent knock off. If you're planning on attending a Con of some sort, you may not want to haul around an actual brick. The coup d'état would be to have one of the promotional foam bricks they made for the release, but these are extremely rare and expensive. I found this prop brick on etsy or you can find a DIY guide online. I would recommend visiting your local Charity Shop to secure the flannel. Several different kinds have been used by others and it's so dirty in the game it's hard to tell what the original pattern was. Green with brown lining and two pockets should get you close enough. Most seasonal Halloween stores carry all the plastic guns you'll need for your arsenal. You could duct tape plastic scissors to a wiffle-ball bat if you wanted to get really creative. The guys at Volpin Props were toying with the idea of making the flamethrower but I wouldn't recommend attempting it on your own (though I love the beer can diffuser.) That and the beard and you're set ;) Would love to see the end results. Good luck!

u/Ubel · 10 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I absolutely love the style of that watch but as someone else with thin wrists, I could never wear it.

I wear a 36mm Citizen Eco-Drive and that's pretty damn close to my limit..

Also I must say I really recommend that watch for under $100 as being a well made stylish watch.

And it's SOLAR POWERED and even after 20 years the specially designed lithium battery inside with still retain 80% of it's original capacity. It will work in complete darkness for 180 days before dying.
Also 12 hours of sunlight is enough to power it for something like an entire week in complete darkness. It's insanely efficient.

I don't even go outside often and it charges so well from ambient light that I've never had the battery go low. Eco Drives are amazing watches and I highly recommend them for anyone that wants something that pretty much never needs maintenance.

(I've heard having seals changed every few years is good for ensuring water resistance though)

I know I sound like a Citizen salesmen or something, but I'm just an honestly impressed 22 year old who loves the hell out of the first good watch he bought.

u/Apokk_ · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm sure I'll get raked for this but...

You should start with the loved/hated "MFA Uniform."

Some of the big ones that are helpful for beginners:

Shirts: Given your claim of being tall/skinny/long armed I'd doubly recommend Oxford shirts and rolling the sleeves in lieu of t-shirts, as an OCBD is suitable for nearly all occasions. A rolled sleeve will disguise if the sleeves aren't the correct length, and will also help you to seem better proportioned. Prices vary a lot, but you should be able to find some affordable ones at virtually any retailer.

Jeans: Fit is obviously the most important for jeans. Trends favor "slim" jeans but not everyone can rock it, so don't worry if you end up with "regular," but for the love of God avoid boot cuts or the like. A big thing you need to know is that jeans fade over time, giving them a more desirable appearance (better contrast/visible texture). Because of this you should get dark jeans (which go better with most clothing) and allow them to fade naturally over time. Here is an album of Levi's 511 "Rigid Dragon" jeans after 3 years of wear, to give you an idea of just how radically the colors of your jeans will change over time. Wear them as often as possible and wash them as rarely as possible (wash inside out only, cold water, do not machine dry), as washing causes the color to set in. If possible just get some Levi's jeans, they're not that expensive and they'll last a long time.

Shoes: Three words my friend: Clarks Desert Boots. Get them in Beeswax and they'll not only go with almost any outfit, but will be appropriate for almost any occasion outside of formal ones. CDBs run big, so get them in at least a half size smaller than you usually wear. Try not to get them wet, they're meant for moderate dry weather.

That's some starter advice for you, I hope it helps.

P.S. Don't buy stuff right away, try to keep an eye out for sales.

u/percypersimmon · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

There are a lot of intro to suit things in the sidebar.

Here's a quick run-down from what I know:

You need two suits, navy and charcoal. Both should be single breasted, 2 button (unless you're over 6'5" then 3), with notch lapels. The cut should be slim without being skinny, but you can get away with a slimmer cut @ 18 than you can in your late 20s.

You can stay simple with white, but I like a lighter blue with a bigger check like this, but again, a matter of preference.

The white shirt makes it easier to pick out a tie. If you're doing plain white, or a solid then you really should get a striped/patterned tie or at the very least it needs to be textured (silk knit). If you were to do a checked/striped shirt then pick a different pattern for the tie (e.g. checked shirt gets a regimental striped tie). You may or may not want to do a pocket square for an interview. I personally wouldn't for something as traditionally conservative as law school.

I think you should look at yellow for a predominant tie color, it's good for interviews.

I would look into getting brown shoes if you are wearing a navy suit, get a decent pair too as you'll want these for several years as well (try to get some leather bottomed oxfords).

Match your belt to your new shoes. The watch is a little weird, just seems like a hybrid of too many differing styles. Something as simple as the (perennially recommended in MFA) Timex Easy Reader is cheap and effective. It'll balance the look without overpowering. Leather strap is also better in a suit than metal.

Get a nice haircut before as well (well a few days before so it doesn't look too new when you interview).

Buy the suit in enough time to take it to a tailor, this really isn't negotiable, you must do this even if it looks like it fits off the rack. There's always a tweak. Also be sure to wear the shoes/shirt/etc you're going to wear to the interview to the tailor when you go to get alterations.

u/shadowbanningsucks · 2 pointsr/Watches

At your budget I would concentrate on the brands; TImex and Casio. Both of these brands make inexpensive, but good quality watches. Anything you get from either of these brands will likely be a good watch, it's just a matter of finding the style and features you like. You will have a large number of models to choose from.

You are not likely to find a good automatic for under $50, so you might want to stick to quartz watches. (You can get a very nice quartz watch for under $50.) If you want to swim with it, look for a watch with 100m water resistance (200m is obviously better, but unnecessary unless you scuba dive).

A few ideas...Casio MRWS310H-9BV solar powered, and 100m water resistant.

Casio Dive watches, the best divers you will find for under $50 or under $20

Timex Weekender a great inexpensive watch. It is very versatile and looks good on a variety of straps.

u/kurazaybo · 7 pointsr/Watches

I think the models you chose are this (burgundy) and this (black).

About the color, the burgundy is interesting and at your age you will have no problem with it, unless we are talking about very formal occassions, but if you want to look sharp I think a neutral color like black or white dial would work better. Perhaps silver and navy would work too.

Both are chronographs around 42 mm wide and 11 mm thick.

Functionally, both are more of a sport watch. The burgundy is a 60 min chrono, so you can time up to 60 min only. The subdial at 3 o'clock tells time in a 24 hr format and I think the makers only include that to make the dial look busy. The black one also goes up to 60 min only, the subdial at 12 o'clock indicates fractions of a second in a format I am not sure I understand. If you are interested in the chrono function (which I use a lot almost everyday), I think you would be better with the ability to time hours.

Seiko is a good brand and I'm sure will last 5 years or longer. I think you will be fine with any of the two.

If I had your budget and wanted a chrono, I would go with a casio. Here is one model and here is another that I think you may like. Both are chronos with a black dial that count up to 12 hours. Price is lower than the Seikos but you loose the date. I would say that quality will be similar to the seikos too and size will not be much different. I would personally choose the second. My only complaint about Casio at this price is that the metal bracelets can be noisy and pull the hair in your arms. This chrono has a clean look that is quite versatile.

If you don't care about the chrono and just want a versatile watch with a busy dial, there are options with leather straps that would look better in formal wear and save some money for a future watch upgrade.

This one uses the subdials to display an anual calendar, meaning you will rarely have to readjust the date (like on february 29 only). It also comes in black and I think it would not look out of place if you wear it with a suit.

The most versatile and elegant watches are simple and thin like this.

Hope this helps.

Recommendation Request : "thank you" gift for a friend. He geeks out on mechanical watches on a deep technical level, but he he can't quite spare the cash to treat himself right now. He just did me a big favor and I want to show my appreciation.

Price: $200, maybe stretch to $250 for a perfect match.

Features: The only nonnegotiables would be selfwinding automatic, and a see-through caseback.

Style: simple, classic, elegant. Style references at higher price points would include :

  • Hamilton Pioneer Auto

  • Frederique Constant Classics Automatic

  • Seiko SARB065

Browsing the Buying Guide, the Seiko 5 SNK809 is almost perfect, but the dial is too busy - more like a field watch than the classic/elegant designs I'm looking for.

Orient Symphony ticks all the boxes on paper, but if I'm going to top out my price range, I wonder if I can't find a prettier movement.

I feel like there must a be a Seiko 5 that fits the bill, but I haven't seen it, yet. I'd also be open to buying used to get him a little more for my money, but I don't really know where to start shopping secondhand in this price range. Thanks for any advice!

Multitool - It doesn't have a knife so I take this to school. It's not the best, but it does small things great. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058RX9NU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_Rc1TDbRPMMDB0 )

Flashlight - For the size, it is really bright. It doesn't last forever, but it is rechargeable. I recommend it for something small. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GQRJLDP/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_6g1TDb65T465P )

Knife - This sub knows this knife. ( https://www.bladehq.com/item--Benchmade-Bugout-AXIS-Lock-Knife--98607 )

Necklace - Totally normal carbon fiber dog tag. ( https://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Panchenko-Dog-Tag-Folder--29966 )

If anyone has any questions about any of this stuff, leave a comment and I'll do my best to respond. To clarify, the knife goes in my pocket and I put on the necklace after school.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my post! Have a good rest of your day everyone!

gotcha.

the black on black might be a tough one, but I know Timex fairfields come in an all black look. don't get hung up on the strap, that can be changed easily to whatever you want. Timex is cheap, but they are quite reliable and people love them. they do tick rather loud though.

you can also find something from Tissot which is a VERY well respected brand. their everytime lineup is very minimal and the quality here is amazing.

this Bulova is also a really nice minimal dress watch with that "ultra thin" vibe.

and while it doesn't look the same as these others, the orient capital is a REALLY nice quartz dress watch for $100. that domed crystal is a thing of beauty.

Hey guys, looking for recommendations. I already have a couple watches in mind but I'd like to know your advice and watches suggestions. I have a certain preference for: Orient Bambino, Seiko cocktail time and the seiko presage... If you have any watches in mind that you think I'd like, your help is appreciated! And just so you know, my wrist is around 75mm. I like moderate-big watches (for example, I have the Casio MDV-106 which is 44mm and I like it, maybe I'd like a slightly smaller watch though).

Also, I like the curved glass of the Feice.

The best outfit to go with a pair of Golden Fox Chukkas. We'll start from the ground up.

Socks: Chukkas for me are a great boot to wear in the spring/summer/fall. Nice and light, less insulation than a typical winter boot. One of my favorite parts about the summer is baseball, so a pair of socks like this should be a given.

Pants: Again, let's keep it nice and light. A pair of J. Crew 484 chinos in Navy sounds like a good plan since they match the chukkas in formality and I absolutely love the classic combination of a navy and tan.

Shirt: I've always been a huge fan of chambrays, especially in red. Again, fits in well with the summery vibe.

Accessories: Gotta go with the classic Timex Weekender. The nylon strap on these just look too good, and the watch doesn't even break the bank either. As for a belt, I'd go with a DIY belt with matching leather to the Golden Fox chukka for a personal touch.

EDIT: I wanted to enter the other contest because I am a goofball. I'll expect my commission checks every two weeks when these become Amazon best sellers.

The best thing about the current outfit is the belt. Even that may be a little narrow/formal for the event, but it will do. You have four main items to focus in on this week. The most important being new shoes in a similar belt color and a watch. If you have the money new chinos and shirt.

Stafford Wing Tips for $42 are a good choice and can be found at your local JCPenny's. Read up on dress shoes and get something less formal. (Lighter shade of brown and brouging)

For the watch, a $27 Timex like this is a good deal and gives off a casual vibe. What ever watch you chose, get it from a reputable watch maker instead of a mall clothing brand. Timex, Seiko, Citizen.

Your current pants are baggier than what MFA typically recommends, an inch or two too long causing bunching by your ankles, and that is why you are seeing comments about poor fit. For your pants, I would get on the casual/slim end of the spectrum Gap's Lived in Slim khakis or a little more formal because of the leg creasing and fabric: Express Photographer. Pick a Light Brown, Lighter grey for less formal and a darker grey or navy blue for a little more formal.

For the Shirt I would highly recommend the Uniqlo OCBD. Sadly you may not receive in time so I would recommend J Crew's slim shirts. They fit similar but are a little more pricey. To make it more casual, get a shirt with a button collar, in a light summery color or patterned in a pleasing pattern like this.

Hope this helps and have fun next week!

>a good first everyday watch that would be fine in situations such as interviews

Formal and semi-formal situations? I'd go with a simple dress watch.

For budget and great looking, consider a Timex Easy Reader, $30, it's a white dial watch with leather strap, great for what you're going for.

What's your budget? Around the hundreds, I'd go with an Orient Bambino, it goes for around $120-$150. It's very classic, minimalist, has a dome crystal, and is not very distracting. It's an automatic too. There's 4 versions of the Bambino. I personally like version 1, and version 2 with blue hands.

A little higher, Timex has been doing some great reissues. The Timex Marlin, $200, is pretty understated but eye catching. It's a manual wind movement watch with a call back design. This will probably be my next watch.

Lastly, Tissot has some great automatic's. The Tissot Visodate, $400, is a fantastic watch for the price.

All these watches can be had for much cheaper if you're open to looking at the gray market (watch exchange forums, ebay, etc.). I hope this helps, at the very least to show what's out there. Cheers and best wishes!

u/TheBigBadGRIM · 2 pointsr/Watches

Good start. My first watch was a Protrek 3000 (black) and then bought your cream dial Bambino along with an Orange Monster. At this point if you wanna fill that third cushion with a watch, I would recommend a G-Shock.

  • It's far different from the other two in terms of style.
  • It's a watch you don't need to be cautious of while wearing because of it's amazing durability. YouTube videos of torture tests will convince you that your G-Shock could possibly outlast all of your watches even if you beat it up.
  • If you get one with Tough Solar + Multi-Band 6 atomic timekeeping, you'll have a watch that recharges itself and corrects itself to perfect time every few days. Then you REALLY will never have to worry about it.

The G-Shock GWM5610-1 with classic square look costs $95 on Amazon and the other colorful options are more expensive but really beautiful.

If you don't want a G-Shock, I would recommend you hold on to your money and just look and learn about watches. You might find that you'll gain interest in specific watch designs and your interest might come and go without you having to spend anything. When I first started this hobby, I got really into open heart watches. I came so close to buying one at one point. Eventually I got sick of looking at them and was glad I never got one. Don't buy on impulse. Buy a watch like you're buying a vacation package, not candy. Eventually you might end up spending as much as an overseas vacation on a single watch. Spend very wisely.

You have a few choices. You could either go quartz or automatic. Quartz is where you have a battery (and sometimes solar charging), and automatic is when the movement of your wrist winds a little spring in the watch. Automatic watches require resetting every few weeks because they are not as accurate, but some people think they are cool. I will assume you don't want to deal with that, but if you do, something from Seiko would be your #1 best bet for sure.

http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRP309-Classic-Automatic-Watch/dp/B00AJK9CL4/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1457419081&sr=8-15&keywords=seiko+diver

This particular watch (which is what I am wearing right now) looks delicate but by all means, it is not. It is meant for scuba diving so you can swim with it and it is very durable to the point where I have accidentally used it to block a lacrosse shot and it survived without a scratch.

If you want to go Quartz, and for 200$, probably solar, you will want to go Citizen.

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-AW1361-10H-Avion-Stainless-Leather/dp/B00KCF7JL6/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419158&sr=1-3&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=citizen+watch

I don't have a citizen myself but they are very highly reviewed over at /r/watches.

You could also go another rout and get a G-SHOCK, which is probably the most durable watch you can buy.

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-GWM5610-1-G-Shock-Solar-Watch/dp/B007RWZHXO/ref=sr_1_6?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419331&sr=1-6&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=gshock+solar

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-G9300-1-G-Shock-Resistant-Multi-Function/dp/B0058W91N2/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419343&sr=1-1&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=gshock+mudman

(Both of those are solar power).

I would encourage you to look above your price range a bit, especially if you want to go for a Citizen, because it allows you to get something like this that will last you forever, but you can still get something great for under $200.

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-AT4117-56H-Nighthawk-Stainless-Eco-Drive/dp/B00GTNPXUE/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419426&sr=1-3&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=citizen+nighthawk

The watches I listed here are much more versatile than most of the ones you linked to, (except for the G-SHOCK, don't wear that with a suit!) I will wear my Seiko Orange Monster with anything from a swim suit at the beach or with a black suit at a formal event. Buying from any of these three brands and not from a fashion/clothing brand that also makes watches will guarantee that your watch will last for a very long time. Feel free to PM me or ask for help at /r/watches if you have any more questions or want any recommendations.

Hey r/watches! This is my concise collection of budget watches. I’ve been collecting for about a year now and have been having a great time with the hobby. As a student, I can’t really afford anything expensive, so I’ve been looking for budget pieces with good value. Here are my pieces:

Sea-Gull 1963 : Got this from Long Island Watch and it has been great. I initially had a problem with a pusher falling out, but I emailed Marc and he sent me a replacement right away. The customer service at Long Island Watch is phenomenal; Marc responded within a few hours of my email the day after Christmas. He even offered to upgrade me to the sapphire version, though I declined because I prefer the acrylic.

Nodus Trieste : This is a great diver from a new microbrand out of California. I got the STP 1-11 version, though the version with the Seiko movement is probably a better value. I love how this watch resembles the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe, but avoids being an homage. The unique umbrella hands are also a great touch. The watch runs well within the promised +/- 5 sec a day, losing about 5 sec per week. I haven’t seen any on this sub, so let me know if you want a review.

Seiko SNK807 : This was my first automatic and I honestly couldn’t be happier with it. The lack of hacking and handwinding is kind of a bummer, but for under $60 I can’t complain at all. I put a high dome on it and polished the bezel a little bit ago in order to keep things interesting.

The straps on the Nodus and the Seagull are from cheapestnatostraps.com. I really like the NATO on the Nodus, but I’d stay away from the leather NATOs. The strap on the Seiko is from Barton , and I 10/10 would recommend.

DW-5600E is the basic (but still great!) no frills square.
Tells the time, has alarms and stop watches, counts up and down, an auto backlight, and calendar to 2039. It's dive rated to 200 meters, and has an electronic luminescent backlight, much like indiglo if you have a Timex.

GWM-5610 is all of the above, along with world time, and has the two biggest features for some: solar charging and atomic radio syncing.
For many, this is the THE "square." It's robust, self sufficient, and has a classic look without looking too dated or too ultra modern. The display is slightly different than the 5600E.

GLX-5600 is most similar to the budget 5600E above but has an additional bit of display for tide and moon information. Still as tough, still as cool looking.

GLS-5600 is a more recent, stylish variant of the 5600E. It come in 4 neat colors (black, white, green, and sand) and features a moving seconds complication on the face. Also, it features a "Low Temp LCD," this LCD is rated to go to -20 C. Honestly as you're wearing it on your person, a normal 5600E can go pretty cold as it also has your body heat. Possibly most importantly for some people, this model comes standard with strap adapters and a really comfy clothes NATO strap standard.

GWM-5610-1BJF is the Japanese only, blacked out model of the radio/solar 5610. These can be imported pretty easily through Amazon, so of cost isn't an issue, don't let the import bother you. The Japanese models also usually feature slightly more supple, softer resin straps and a screwback case, like on a mechanical time piece.

While not exclusively a 5600, if you need a big honkin' watch, the GX-56 is basically a thick 5600. Huge buttons and case, has all of the features of a 5610 with a cool moving seconds graphic like the GLS.

Many of these can be found in various colors and feature variants, so as a recap/guide:

5600 - standard square G Shock

5610 - radio/solar square model

GLX - surfing/tide model

GLS - stylish colors, comes with NATO strap

GX-56 - huge "King" G Shock

BB after model number - blacked out model

JF after model number - Japan import

Hopefully this helped. I had a lot of fun making this.

Okay, ironic is a slippery word and it's meaning is very specific and a bit esoteric. However, like "pretentious", many people nowadays use it to describe something a little different from what it means. In this use, I meant it in the sense that kids wear and purchase things that they don't necessarily genuinely like, but wear for a value of humour.

For example, the Three Wolf Shirt gained a lot of popularity in "hipster culture" because it was "cool", but not for the reasons the creators intended. Hip kids who wear it are not especially fans of wolves or The Mountain's other designs but found a special absurdity in this particular design.

So, a GnR shirt might be worn "ironically" by someone who wants to invoke a sense of nostalgia or humour (especially with a more over the top design, like this) but doesn't actually listen to or even respect the band. They wear it strictly for its fashion properties.

This gets really murky when kids who actually love a band like GnR (or Poison, Scorpions, etc.) wears a shirt like this, but wears it in this style. It is very hard to tell when kids are "being ironic" or expressing genuine support. My favorite example of this is the fanny pack. It was originally marketed towards yuppies and soccer moms, then, later on, hipsters started wearing them out of irony. Certain people took this to mean they were "fashionable", so people wore them because they were convenient and stylish. They never were and still aren't, but now you've got all these idiots walking around with fanny packs and no one can tell who's "cool" and who is a nerd.

Moral of story: Don't wear things out of irony because you still look like an idiot even if your friends think it's funny or kitchy.

u/Fuiste · 0 pointsr/Watches

This Invicta diver works great on the steel band it comes with, and I personally think a weathered brown leather strap would look great too.

It's a pretty clear "homage" to the Rolex submariner, but for the price you're getting a pretty good quality automatic movement in a watch that looks great with anything from jeans + t shirt to business casual.

If you want something more minimal and are willing to ditch the steel bracelet, then this Timex is a great option. I've got one that's still ticking on its original battery after about 10 years. They're bone simple bulletproof watches that look good with any outfit.

u/-reTARDIS · 14 pointsr/moto360

Deleted my other post on this as I figured everyone would rather see the pics than a link to the band...

I originally assumed I'd do the stainless band since I have the stainless/silver 360 but have to say the grey leather strap really grew on me while I was trying to figure out what kind of metal bands were out there that'd work.

If it wasn't for the lack of a easier to remove clasp on the leather strap that came with the 360, I might have even kept it on there.

I found after a full day of wearing the leather band though that moisture was getting stuck under the watch due to sweat and hand washing.

Since the leather strap is to much of a pain to quickly remove every time I washed my hands, I'd just not bother.

With the metal band, the quick release clasp on the bottom makes it very quick to remove/loosen the watch to dry under there after each hand washing now.

Here's the matte black version

Here's the stainless steel verson

You'll need to either use the spring bars/pins that came with the watch or buy some like these.

Best Buy also sells the same Pebble Steel bands for the same price as Amazon which is where I got mine from.

Some tips with removal and install. The spring bar/pin holes in the Moto 360 are made from plastic. Be extra careful with removal and putting the new ones back in. If you misshapen or break those holes, you're screwed.

If you don't have a proper spring bar tool like this, you'll need a jewelers sized flathead screw driver.

Getting the existing bands out is the easy part, I found putting the new band back in with the spring bars that came with the leather strap to be a lot more tricky in the metal band. I found the best way was to try and compress the springs on both ends of the bar and go straight into the opening. If you try to put one side of the spring bar in first then compress the other side, it didn't want to fit.

I enlisted my wife with her tiny little hands to assist and it made things a lot easier :P

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

u/Silent_Explosions · 2 pointsr/Watches

I posted this in the last thread, but nobody was able to help me. Hopefully someone can this time, because my family wants gift ideas, and this would be a great one.

I'm a college student that has a limited budget ($150 or under), and has wanted to get a watch for a while now. It turns out that I'm pretty particular with what style I want, I tend to like a minimalist type of design. I wanted a leather band, and the date. I also wanted something that was kind of dressy, yet something I could wear on almost any occasion.

Anyway, I finally narrowed it down to one that I like, and two that are close. The Seiko SGEH14P1 is the one I prefer the most, followed by the Seiko SUR023P2, and the Seiko SARB065.

My question is, does anyone have any advice about these watches? Or suggestions of similar watches that you like? I don't want to be disappointed with this purchase, it will be a while until I can afford another watch. Also, where is the best place to buy, Is amazon ok? Because the amazon page seems kinda sketchy, and I don't want to buy a knock off, or something that's broken. Also it seems hard to find it anywhere else.

Thank's for all the help!

u/tappman321 · 8 pointsr/Watches

If you want a chrono, a Seiko SSB031, mecha-quartz is a good value for $125. You get a smooth sweeping chrono hand, which is nice to have on a quartz watch. If that doesn't fit your style, you can look up different SSB models to find one you like.

If you want a field watch, Citizen Men's BM8180-03E is a nice quartz watch for $90. You can get a Timex Expedition for cheaper, but I think the Citizen is a better value for the price point. The Timex Waterbury is a nice watch for $100-$150, and I really like the look of the watch (might be overpriced for what you get but I just really like the look).

And also check out some G-Shocks. They don't get much love here, but I honestly think if you just care for a watch you can use, and don't care about looks, a DW-5600E is the best watch you can get in your price range.

u/G19Gen3 · 8 pointsr/Watches

I like automatic watches. I've also got a wife, child, and house to pay for. I also love to beat the shit out of my stuff because it just sort of happens.

Enter the SNK803. Automatic. Tough. Most importantly, easily replaced if I destroy it. But, I don't like the matte finish of the case. I DID have a dremel tool. Do I have an autozone? Yes I do. Do they carry mother's mag & aluminum polish? Every day. So I polished it up. Not mirror, a shiny satin finish. But now I need a quality strap. So I ordered a John Allen Woodward Alligator for $1,100...NO! What goes best with a satin finish and a beige face? Simple leather! This is a Ritche Genuine Leather NATO strap for a timex weekender. Happens to come in 18mm. And you know it's high quality leather. How? Says so. Genuine is right in the name. Only the best straps come WITH a tool to remove the pins.

Now I've got a watch that looks great, keeps great time, is a tiny mechanical wonder, and looks just as good at work as it does hiking. With a grand total of maybe $60 and an hour of work in it.

u/mseffner · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm looking to buy a watch for myself, but I've never worn one before and I know nothing about them. I want something simplistic for everyday use that will be low-maintenance and last at least a few years. I am an early 20s male and my wrist is about 7''. I want a gray/black/silver analogue watch with a date display and a non-metal band. Budget is under $100.

Through my searching, the best I've found so far is this Citizen. This Casio is okay, but has a bit too much going on for me. I like the look of this black Citizen, but it seems like it would be unreadable. Watches that I like the look of but are too expensive are almost anything by Tayroc and this Tissot PR100.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Edit: Thanks to the help of /u/timmythetoole and /u/WordOfMadness, I've decided on the Seiko SNK793. While browsing through watches, the idea of a blue dial has grown on me (it would match my eyes), so I chose this over the SNK795. I think I'll use it with the metal band for a while to see if I can get used to it, and swap it out for a leather band if I have to. Thanks guys!

u/pancake-breakfast · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Fellow big-foot here. The struggle is real. I have wide-ass feet (wide ass-feet?), and have a terrible time finding shoes.

MFA is split on the sneakers thing, but I love a pair of New Balances just because they have consistently made shoes in my size. Depending where you work and who you are etc some simple, classic sneakers can look good with jeans and a button-up.

I love their classics line with jeans, and there are a bunch in size 15.

Generally, most classic, clean shoes work well with jeans and a button-down. I've been wearing a pair of white nike blazers recently which also come in a 15.

The MFA-favorite, the Clark's Desert Boot comes in a 15.

It looks like neither Apache nor Chippewa come in a 15, but you could probably peruse this post to find a brand that makes some. Even if they're a little expensive, always just buy the right pair of boots the first time! I skimped on my first pair, and I'm just counting down until next winter when I can justify buying the right pair.

GOOD LUCK!

u/ninjamike808 · 1 pointr/Watches

You'll probably love that watch, it's very lightweight, so after a short while, you'll forget it's on your arm.

I really like this style of watch. It's a manual wind, which is old school, but I like the skeleton/ open heart style.

This is a bit flashier, so you might not want to wear it to too formal of an event.

An everyday watch that is rather plain. There's also a chronograph version, too, if you feel like timing stuff.

Here' an eco-drive, titanium watch that barely meets your dress watch budget. Some people would wear something like this as a dress watch, but I'm not sure if you would...

I didn't even know Seiko Kinetics got that cheap, and I'm not sure if that's too big for you, but it looks good.

Personally, if it's quartz, I don't really care for it, but this Seiko is nice. The thing about quartz is that it just won't last, but at $60, you can replace it.

If you don't like any of these, I think they're a good start and could lead you to find something that you'll love. That's one thing about watches, you should make sure you love it, especially if it's an automatic. Some one put a lot of time into it. Now, these Seikos, Orients and Bulovas aren't hand made, and might not have original movements (well Orient does) but they're artwork. You don't just throw art on your wall, you pick something meaningful. The guy who throws art on his wall is the same guy who throws an ugly watch on his wrist, or an expensive watch that has no business being as expensive as it is.

u/Veeg-Tard · 1 pointr/Watches

I think that the BEST value at the entry level for watches is the Seiko SKX Diver and an aftermarket Super Oyster Bracelet.

It will cost closer to $300 all in, but you're getting a more durable, water resistant, and much cooler watch.

I like the Seiko Alpinist better on leather, but it will cost a little more and you will need to replace the leather straps pretty quickly if you are wearing it everyday.

I have a JLC Grande Date and a Breitling Navitimer on leather. They are some of the best leather straps available, but they still wear out fast. I know you say you want a leather strap, but I'd strongly recommend a steel bracelet like the one I linked if you want something nice that will last.

u/VashTStamp · 3 pointsr/Watches

Both the watches are capable of having a NATO band on them. Personally, I think that the classic silver T2H281 would look best with a wider variety of NATO bands. It's also kind of the watch I like more in general of the two, so I could be a little biased.

You are going to want to buy a tool to remove the spring bars in the band/strap which hold the strap to the lugs of the watch. Different watches have different lug width. Both of the watches you were looking at where 18 mm lug width, so you are going to want to order an 18 mm NATO band to accompany, along with your spring bar tool.

AND since I am being extra nice today I went ahead and showed you what a NATO strap entails and how to put it on.

Step One: remove the strap with the spring bar tool.

Step Two: notice the spring bar within the strap, remove this and place back in between watch lugs.

Step Three: The watch should now look like this after the spring bars are put back on, lay out the NATO strap next to it exactly like so.

Step Four: Weave through the watch spring bars like so, and then weave the main band through the metal bar I am holding in order to secure the watch to the NATO band.

Step Five: End result with complimentary wrist shot, showing the spring bar tool and leather band I removed (which I happen to often wear). Loop excess strap through the bars on the NATO strap like pictured.

Good luck my friend, Cheers!

u/skepticaljesus · 2 pointsr/Watches

I think the watch you linked is a Kent Wang, right? Reviews on those are only so-so anyways, as seems par for the course with KW stuff. There's better ways to spend $400.

Do you care if your watch is quartz or mechanical? If this is your first piece, I'd recommend sticking quartz. They're cheaper and lower maintenance and down the road if you feel like you've got the bug you can upgrade to mechanical, but in the short term I don't think it's really worth it, especially if you just want a nice stylish piece.

For some nice, clean low priced pieces that are a good value and have a smart design, check out the Timex Weekender, Braun Men's watch, Rider Bauhaus, Orient Bambino, or pretty much any Seiko 5.

Those last few are mechanical rather than quartz. At this price point it doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot, just get something you like the look of.

u/keyek · 12 pointsr/Watches

After searching /r/watches and considering both the Bulova 96B104 and the Orient Class I chose to go with the Bulova. I have a really small 6 inch wrist and needed a nice dress watch that wouldn't look out of proportion on my wrist.

I loved the minimal look of both watches but I wanted to have a seconds hand, plus I preferred 37mm over 38mm so I went with the Bulova. I'm really happy with my choice. I wish I had a better camera to capture how nice the Bulova looks.

The Bulova is a great size for my wrist, it looks proportionally bigger in the picture, here is one that shows a wider perspective, but it still looks more proportional in person.

My only criticism is that the leather strap could be better quality, it just seems a little too thin and delicate. However, its not something that distracts from the watch or is worth overlooking the watch. I may replace the strap later on, but for now I'm going to see if it grows on me.

u/johnwclark · 1 pointr/Watches

I agree with LawsListens on this, and we have very similar opinions. I think this is a case where you need to determine what makes it seem cheap to you. For some it is the seemingly random colors on many of the plastic models.

My favorite cheap black model is the Casio F105, but they got it down to blue and grey on black. I think putting these on a nato strap makes them look really sharp, and much less cheap. If you want a silver case look at the Casio A158, or the Royale ( AE1200 ). I have the F105 ( and a couple G-Shocks, but these are way too thick based on what you said ).

There are some nice "Ana-Digi" models that have a small LCD display on an analog watch, and might give you some of what you want, like this AW49, or this AW80. I have never bought any of this, but they seem like a good middle ground.

If you want something a bit more "office acceptable", you probably need to go pure analog, but you are going to give up a number of cool functions that you may use from your digital. If you want something that is inexpensive and tough Casio Duro MDV106, it is a 200m diver, with a stainless steel case, and a screw down crown. These can usually be found for $45-60, but it has some size to it at 44mm. Probably my favorite, under the radar pick is the SNK80x, personally I like the SNK807 ( navy blue ) or the 803 ( beige ), but they are all the same great watch, and usually under $70. I own both of these.

u/Captain_Canadian · 2 pointsr/Watches

The Casio MDV106-1A dive watch and Infantry NATO strap are linked to their Amazon pages. The Casio was $38, and the strap was $8, both with free shipping, for a grand total of $46.

If I were to do it again I might try a 22mm strap instead of the 20mm one. The fit is just a bit loose and the spring bars could also be a bit stronger I think. The Lume isn't that great, but the actual dial has a really nice clean look, and the red second hand stands out pretty well while reading it. The bezel also rotates which I didn't expect to see in such an inexpensive watch.

All in all, though, this thing looks surprisingly good for the price, and I was getting compliments on it even with the stock rubber strap.

EDIT: As others have pointed out, the actual size of this watch is:
Case Diameter: 44mm
Strap Size: 22mm
Thickness: 12mm
As a result, my strap is just a bit small at 20mm since I bought it before the watch arrived.

The best way to spruce up this wardrobe is to do it better than everyone else. Some of your freedom is restricted, but not all of it. There's a thousand light blue OCBDs out there, a thousand hairstyles, a thousand tie designs, a thousand belts, etc. etc. Make sure everything fits well and is well designed. Here's a few ideas:

OCBD: Uniqlo, Gap, J. Crew Factory. Spend a few bucks and get it tailored so it fits perfectly.

Pants: Dockers, Topman, Gap. Look for skinny, slim, or tapered fits. Get them hemmed to no break, and if you're wearing them with boat shoes, cuff them a bit, if you're allowed to.

Belt: Everlane, Tanner, Norstrom Rack. I know, I know, you're a student and spending almost $100 on a belt seems dumb. That's just to give you an idea of the kind of design to look for. Nordstrom Rack usually has a good selection of nice designer belts.

Sneakers: Jack Purcell, Superga, Tretorn. Not sure whether "solid black" means no white allowed?

Boat Shoes: Sperry, Sebago, Dockers. Get brown. Trust me. And please don't wear socks with boat shoes. I don't care what the school says.

Ties: Seersucker, Knit, Stripe. With ties, look for unique fabrics and prints, like chambray, linen, and seersucker, floral, stripes, and solids, etc.

Extra Stuff: A nice watch, cool sunglasses, and a classy tie bar.

Hope this helps?

This Seiko 5 - SNZG15 is my first automatic watch. I’ve owned this watch for 2 weeks now but I didn’t want to post it here until I received the dark brown leather NATO I ordered for it. I think it compliments the watch nicely and gives it a more sophisticated look from the cheap strap it comes with. I was torn between this watch and the Seiko SNK809 but after looking it over I chose the SNZG15 because its larger in diameter (42mm vs. 37mm) as well as it is waterproof up to 330ft (100m). If anyone else owns this watch I’d love to see what straps you recommend for it. Thanks!

FYI on Amazon it states that the band width is 20.6mm. This is false. Order a 22mm

I own one, and it's the gateway drug to watch collecting. It's a good, cheap, starter watch - but you'll probably end up getting something more expensive if you really like it.

Pros: it's a good quality, good looking, dirt-cheap (for $30 on Amazon, you can't go wrong.) "basic" field watch, NATO straps are cheap and come in dozens of colours/patterns, the quartz movement is extremely accurate, the battery life is good (haven't changed mine and I've had it for a year), the mineral crystal won't scratch easy so it's a good beater, and if you press the crown the face glows green for night reading (their "indiglo" feature).

Cons: it's simple, there are no complications like date/day, it is loud, it only has a water resistance of 3 ATM (so just splashes), and (I could be wrong) but I don't think it has spring pins on the lugs so you're stuck with NATO straps. Also, if you get right into your watches, you might want a mechanical over a quartz (even though they're more of a hassle, they're just somehow cooler - the Seiko 5s mentioned are automatics). Personally, I don't love the polished case either - I prefer a more subtle brushed steel look. If you do get one, be aware you can get them with a white or black face. The watch is 38mil in diameter, too, which is about the smallest you can get for a men's watch - so be aware if you have a big wrist it might look small.

This is a great alternative if you want a mechanical watch, but it's a little more expensive - but still great value.

u/HectorTheOwl · 2 pointsr/Watches

Most Seamasters are considered divers. I love them as well, but are significantly out of my price range too. Seiko has a few nice divers, most popular being the SKX007, or the SNZH57. Both are great value for price.

Another route you could go is Steinhart. They make a lot of homage divers (some are pretty much straight up replicas of Rolex's), which some people dislike, but again, great value for price.

u/bscepter · 3 pointsr/Watches

I've been eyeing this guy for a couple of years now. It almost seemed too good to be true for the price, but now that it's on my wrist, I can see why this has become a cult watch of sorts.

Fit and finish are excellent. The rotor is finished with Geneva waves, which is a nice touch on an otherwise undecorated movement. And the face is just gorgeous. It’s not as blue as it looks in the Amazon listing, but it does have a hint of blue, depending on the light. It comes with a patent-leather strap on a deployant clasp, which is a classy touch.

The only issue I have is its size. Up until now, my largest watch has been my 16610 Submariner, which is a 40mm watch, including its bezel. This is a 40mm watch with a larger face than the sub, so it just seems huge to me. Plus, my dressier watches (Datejust, Vulcain, Omega) are vintage, so they’re smaller (36mm, 35mm and 34mm), which makes this seem quite large. I’m sure I’ll get used to it though.

In any case (pun not intended), it’s a heck of a lot of watch for the price.

spreading out the money over three pairs will get you three pairs of crappy shoes. If you need to start from scratch basically, two pairs for 150 would be doable. Since you're 17 and in high school, I'm assuming you don't really do much walking around in puddles/snow since you just walk from the car/bus to the school and back for the most part, is that right?

Do you have something to wear in the snow when it does snow? What do you normally do?

If that's the case, you can get away with getting some three-season shoes instead of a winter boot.Clark's Desert Boots in Beeswax leather is something that is recommended a lot (the subreddit logo is even a desert boot) because they look good with virtually anything besides shorts. The only problem with these is that even though they are a boot, they are a desert boot and are made primarily for warm climates. Even if you treat them with a waterproofer, water will still get through the seems and they won't keep your feet very warm. If you don't do much outside walking, that's not really a problem though. Try them on in a store first and then shop around for a good deal. You should be able to find a pair for like $70 or even less.

If you wear shorts, you need a pair of shoes to wear with those. A pair of light grey or off-white converse will fit nicely. Light grey is a little less harsh and you can wear white shirts with them. I have a pair of white Jack Purcells but when I wear white shirts, it feels a little too matchy-matchy. Chuck Taylors are a little cheaper (~$45) but they are more ubiquitous, while Jack Purcells look a little nicer imo (at ~$55).

you should have like 30 bucks left over after that, just save it or grab a pair of leather laces for your Converse. If you have to pick just one, I would pick the Converse if you're planning to wear shorts. If not, then go with the Clarks.

Oh, just remembered another option instead of the Clarks for you would be this LL Bean Blucher Moc. You can wear these with basically anything, including jeans and shorts, and they should be able to take more weather than the desert boots will. If it gets wet where you live, you might consider these instead of the Clarks or instead of both. When it gets cooler, use some of your other cash for some wool socks and that should look really great while still being functional.

If you don't have a winter boot and if it snows a lot where you are/you spend a lot of time outside, you might consider getting a pair of boots with your money instead. These fit your price range, look good, and should last through a lot.

Also you should check out /r/TeenMFA and /r/frugalmalefashion because there are a lot more kids in your age and with your type of budget restraints.

Despite not really liking watches, after a lot of pestering from friends and family I've decided to buy a Timex Weekender, but I have some questions regarding the watch face and strap. For reference, the attire I would most likely be wearing with this watch would be your basic bastard /r/MFA uniform (ocbd, dark wash slim fit jeans, etc)

  1. I can't remember if I read this here or just overheard it somewhere, but I seem to recall a lot of people recommending you replace the base strap on the Weekender and use something else? If so, can I get some recommendations here? The cheaper the better, I'm not looking to spend too much on this.

  2. If we take a look at this Amazon listing for Weekenders, which watch face would be considered the most neutral or versatile. If you can, let me know if any of these watches work with their included straps, or if I'm better off replacing it as asked in question 1.

  3. What's my best bet in terms of finding a good deal on these? Should I try walking into various stores (walmarts, etc) and see if they're on sale? Or should I just keep watching the Amazon listing and pray it goes on sale there? Budget is a little tight at the moment, and I do have an event coming up within the next couple of months that the watch would be useful for.

    Thanks in advance!
u/honicthesedgehog · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Surprised to see that Timex isn't getting more love. They make really solid pieces for a pretty affordable price - you can find their Weekender and Expedition lines for under $30 (and great cream dial options), either of which could be worked into business casual. I have a Fairfield Chrono that is one of my favorites for business casual outfits.

Another fan favorite is the Seiko SNK8 line (with black and cream options) - these are automatics instead of battery-powered which is fun (especially with the clear case back to see the movement), but you have to reset the time if you don't wear them every day. Seiko has all sorts of decent options under $100 too.

Orient (a Seiko subsidiary) is well known for being a quality entry-level brand. If you prefer diver style watches, the Mako/Ray automatic divers are stellar, and the ridiculous amount of Bambino models are fantastic dress watches that can easily be dressed down.

If you're looking to take the one quality watch versus several cheaper ones, I can't say enough good things about the Hamilton Khaki Field. It's pricier (~$450) but it fits with almost anything (casual, business casual, even masquerades as a dress watch at times) and I pretty much wear it almost exclusively these days. Of course, if you're willing to spend $500+, there are a dizzying amount of options out there.

Two other notes: don't worry too much about the strap color. Most default straps are low-quality and you can easily replace it with anything you want (spring bar tools are like $5). Second, I think the real issue most folks have with fashion watches is that they're just straight up overpriced (aka it's a $10 watch sold for $100+) and you can usually find off-brand versions of most everything on Ali Express. That said, if you really like a certain watch, forget the haters and just buy it - it's going on your wrist, not theirs.

u/luckynumberpi · 1 pointr/Watches

Repost from an old comment of mine, but still relevant.

I originally got started with a Citizen Eco-Drive chrono. Mine still runs after 10+ years, and looks great on a black leather strap with white stitching.

It's solar powered, and Citizen's solar tech is crazy good. After a year in a box it starts ticking the moment it comes out, and with regular exposure to light it'll just keep going. No battery changes needed, and it has quartz precision. Like I said, mine is over 10 years old.

That's where I recommend starting – simple, hands-off operation. Only once you've started to develop a budget and a more genuine appreciation should you venture into the land of automatics. Going to college you definitely want to be on time, and you don't want to have to care about setting the watch every time you don't wear it for a few days.

Though I don't own any myself, Timex is a reputable low-cost vendor to consider as well. Their Expedition series is nice, as well as the some what odd Flyback. If you happen to be into pure digitals, then Casio is the king.

u/ireallyhatepants · 8 pointsr/Watches

I've always been a little hooked on watches, but I only recently started grasping what made some watches worthwhile, and others, well, not so much. In the case of this Seiko (SNK805), I'd been searching for something like it for a while. I'd never owned an automatic, and it was proving pretty hard to find one that wasn't at least several hundreds dollars. I know it's nothing special for a lot of people here, but I'm absolutely floored at the build quality and overall appearance of a watch that cost me less than $65.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the strap it shipped with, but that was an easy fix via a $15 leather NATO strap, purchased from Amazon.

All told, I love the watch. But after discovering how awesome automatics are, dear God, do I fear for my wallet's future.

u/Crunchatize_Me_Cptn · 2 pointsr/Watches

The Timex Fairfield Chrono is a good pick, though at your budget I would recommend the upgrade to either one of the Tissot Everytimes for the sapphire crystal or one of the Citizen AU1080 for sapphire in addition to solar power. For something a little more "sophisticated" looking there's the Tisell Bauhaus or one of the Junkers quartz Bauhaus watches.

Clean dials (Bauhaus, especially) are usually pretty versatile because they blend better with more outfits without clashing, though they can get a little dressy. For more simple dials that aren't too formal:

-Seiko SNKN47

-Citizen "Chandler"

-Citizen "Corso"

-Citizen "CTO"

-Messerschmitt KR200-SS

-Bulova Accutron - Quartz movement, but has a nice sweeping seconds hand similar to that of a mechanical watch instead of the ticking motion of a standard quartz.

You could go another route which is the dressy chronograph. You don't want it to be too big though. Depending on wrist size and your overall build I would say 42mm tops, around 40mm or less is best. For example:

-Citizen AO9000-06B

-Bulova 96B262

-Orient Panda

-Seiko SNDC31 and SNDC33 - These two would be my top pick for the dressy chronograph, or the Orient Panda.

You could probably get away with wearing a diver too. Divers are tool watches so I personally wouldn't wear them with anything past maybe business casual (James Bond wears his diver in a tux on a Nato strap no less, but he's fucking James Bond so he gets a pass). Some popular ones are:

-Seiko SKX

-Orient Mako II

-Orient Ray II

This watch-face is called "Das Slick" and was made available by a developer named "jdixl" on the Pebble app store. Its online link is available here. The developer did a great job of all the graphics, animations, and proportions of the different pieces. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any contact info for jdixl, but hope I can still perhaps find a watch that was his inspiration for this face.

As Pebble products are in a tricky state of being these days, I have been looking for a different watch to switch to. This watch-face was my favourite on my pebble watch, so finding something close or identical would be really awesome.

If you don't think you know any relevant info... I would still appreciate your advice. My taste is more towards slim and simple watches, I like Timex Weekender watches, and recently ordered one with an even slimmer profile called Timex Easy Reader Day-Date. So far the Timex Easy Reader is the closest I've found to the Das Slick face. Perhaps you can give me some suggestions or ideas based on that info & the picture in this post.

Thanks for your advice and time guys.

A lot of people recommend the regular Weekenders but they tick really loudly. They look great and are worth their price but the tick bothers me.

The best watches I've found for under $100 are:

Seiko 5 in your preferred color

Casio MDV Diver

Timex Weekender Chrono (Doesn't tick loudly)

If you choose one of these it's really easy to switch out the strap with one of these (spring bar tool)

I own all three of these watches and they are great. You can also check out different straps on Amazon or sites like cheapestnatostraps.

Ehh, for $60 you don't have much to lose with sturhling (look up mushroom brand on here or watchuseek to get a better understanding of why they are so bad, basically they are constantly "on sale" for astounding deals, and pretend to be swiss or German while being made in China)

Honestly I think the only two new watches worth buying (you can get some interesting stuff at flea markets if you are lucky) would be the Casio mdv106 or the venerable Seiko snk809. I have the mdv106 and have beaten it to hell and back and it still looks and runs great. I don't have an snk809 but I have a couple Seiko's and they are all fantastic watches, probably the best you'll find for the price, do a quick search on /r/watches for "snk809" and you'll find plenty of happy owners, just be warned that its a small watch.

Honestly though, if you love the look of the sturhlings then buy it, for $60 it really isn't that bad of a deal

Wonderful stuff, thank you. The moon does not need fingers to be noticed, as plainly seen here.

I'm not gonna lie: I don't find this sort of writing helpful at all, not for my purposes anyway. It is too smart and learned, it picks its points and makes them with examples and therefore asks you to justify thinking another way.

But most of all, this writing does not yield to its own subject, namely, the resolution of the dualisms which appear one after another during contemplation, resolved through either a re-orientation of the language in Dogen's case, or the dialectics of Nagarjuna. These particular learned words sit entirely outside of these systems they describe. Let me explain.

This sort of writing is perhaps useful to confirm one's own experience, but as a guide, if one identifies too closely with this sort of writing, if one follows its logic and hopes to absorb its meaning directly from the text rather than from the moon they are pointing to, one will be stuck.

Without being a zen practitioner like you (I'm not anything really), I'll apologize straight away for trying to characterize something you know much more about. But zen advocates exactly this direct observation of the tao. The koans to me are language behaving like an escape artist, getting itself out of the way. Less Jesus and more Houdini. They are like self-defeating booby traps, elaborately wrapped gifts which when opened yield nothing, and then even the box is gone. They are words that play along with the tao, rather than words which purport to exist outside and therefore are able to point at it, presupposing some privileged place from which one can point towards totality.

This is precisely why I find religion so unsatisfying, and precisely why I find adherence to scripture such a problem (I am not in any way reading your comments to mean you take the opposite view). By asking for belief in words, religion presupposes authoritative, clever individuals who are entitled to require your disbelief in experience. It's exactly the opposite direction you need to be going.

I really am glad to have this, it was this watch (in a different color) that sparked my interest in watches, and I'm glad I get to have the pleasure of owning this piece. I saw this a few months ago, which as well piqued my interest in this sub, and the wonderful world of watchmaking. After this I've been interested in the Seiko 5 SNK793 as a first automatic watch, something I can wear that's a bit dressier.

On a side note, it also seems to have gotten my mother interested, as right after I showed her the Seiko I'll be ordering, she went and ordered herself a Seiko 5 SNK803. So it's nice to pass on the interest.

u/cyco · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

It seems like you're already getting advice on the "new jeans" front (also check out the links on the side -->), so I can offer some shoe recommendations if you want.

Basically, there are a LOT of options in between "gym shoes" and "dress shoes." It really depends on your style. You could go with a simple canvas shoe like these if you want to stick with sneakers. For a slightly classier look, Sperry boat shoes are comfortable and never go out of style.

I love my Sperry Topsiders, especially now that it's getting warmer out, since you can wear them without socks and they go with shorts as well. But I live in an area where "preppy" style is the norm, so boat shoes are almost required :P

For shoes specifically with jeans, another common MFA recommendation is desert boots, especially Clarks. They're a great casual/going out shoe with jeans, and a good summer pickup as they are meant for warmer months.

Hope that helps! Also check out this guide for summer shoes.

$180 can definitely get you something decent. Where would you wear it? Are we talking an office setting, something casual with t-shirt and jeans? Something that can get beaten up outdoors or you can rock at the gym?

Lots of ideas out there, but it's like saying "What kind of shoes should I buy for $180?" -- really depends on what you're wearing them for!

A few popular ones:

The Casio "Duro". Known for it's classic design, can be worn on all kind of straps, and Casio is a well-respected manufacturer of quality affordable watches. It's also water resistant to 200m, which means you can take it literally anywhere and it'll operate like a champ.

If you want an upgraded version of the Casio, this Seiko is well-loved in the watch community and, if you spend a few dollars to get it serviced every 5 years or so at a local watch shop, will easily last you the rest of your life. Classic divers watch with a handsome metal band, and will pair well with any outfit short of a black-tie event. It doesn't take a battery either, because it's automatic!

Finally, if you don't care about water resistance and want something that will pair with any kind of "everyday" activities, consider the Braun. It's a great design because it's not flashy or too fancy, but will quietly just WORK with whatever you're wearing: suit, t-shirt, date night, bar night, whatever. Comes in black too.

The Casio MDV106-1AV is a perfect daily use watch and does look like the Rolex Submariner but is a great watch in it's own right. It is quartz rather than automatic but considered by many to be best available budget dive watch. You can purchase the bracelet for it for less than $30.

If you must have an automatic rather than a quartz then the Orient Ray II is a great option that is also similar to the Submariner in terms of design but again a quality time piece in and of itself.

And if you aren't bothered about having the Rolex style looks, the Seiko SNZH55 is designed along the lines of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and also an excellent timepiece.

Posting another one of my favorite cheap but stylish watches I've added to my rotation. I purchased the OD Weekender a few weeks back and something about it just didn't float my boat. After scouring the web for a decent Nato strap seller, I purchased this strap along with two others from The Nato Strap Co. and immediately fell in love with my Timex's new look.

Though I love the Weekender's high looks/price ratio above everything else, I especially like how easy and readily it accepts new Nato straps. I look forward to purchasing and photographing more in the future.

Thanks for taking a look!

That outfit make you look like a high schooler. Though if that's the vibe your going for awesome, but I doubt it.

I'm going to assume you're in your early 20's and not a high schooler, nor do you wish to look like one.

The biggest issue with this outfit is that there is no unity between the pieces, it looks like you just threw on whatever was in your closet that day. My goal is to keep your overall style the same, but make it look a bit less immature. Try out some of these tips, and I think you'll be amazed at the difference.

  1. Can't tell if the white on your feet are socks or the shoes, but if they are socks, ditch em or get no-shows.

  2. Those glasses look like they came form one of those cart dealers you see at rest stops, buy some decent shades without the stupid reflective coating. (I'm a big fan of the classic RayBan 2140's, though I wear 2132's cause they go with my face better).

  3. It looks like you're wearing a red beanie, which goes well with the red shoes. That being said, I hate the shoes, they stick out like a sore thumb and detract from the overall look of the outfit. Either try swapping them out for a more neutral color or add more color to the chest part of your outfit (ideally a aqua as it goes well with red without looking like christmas)

  4. I REALLY (I mean REALLY) hate the button-up over graphic tee looks. Is just screams high school. Obviously that's subjective, but I absolutely can't stand it. I used to do it when I was in high school and thought I looked like the shit. That being said, if you are going to do it, I say ditch the graphic tee and go with a solid color that compliments the color of the button up (For example, I have a red checked button up that I wear over a teal v-neck). Personally, I like to button the shirt up to the third button, so the tee underneath just pops up the top. Like so

  5. That shirt does not fit. The shoulder seem does not look like it lands on the apex of your shoulder bone like it should. Also the sleeves on the shirt are billowing like mad. Also your sleeve rolls are sloppy (though that may be intentional).

  6. I would ditch the metal watch for a cloth band one. A popular option (and one which I love) is the Timex Weekender. Metal bands are typically more formal than that outfit, so it looks out of place as hell.

  7. Jeans look fine, I like slimmer, but that's personal preference.

As for your point about shoes not being as important as people say, I have to disagree. Look at this and this. Just changing the shoes has a profound effect on the overall look and formality of the outfit.

P.S. This is my favorite outfit for going out, though sometimes I go more basic with just a V-neck.

Thank you for your input! Yes I was indeed misguided... I really liked you suggestion of the Timex Fairfield, but I have the impression it'll a tad big with 41mm, but I really appreciated the idea of buy a separate band, it open the options quite a lot. I would like to, be within $200CAD overall:

For watches, I've owned smart watches (pebble and a moto 360) and own many analog watches. I prefer analog to a fitness or smart watch any day of the week if your primary purpose is to have a watch on your wrist (and not an extension of your smart phone).

For watches, I have 3 recommendations, all under $100:

  1. Timex Weekender: This is a cheap, <$40 watch. Nothing too fancy but it's become somewhat of a staple. [Here's a link.](http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T2P4959J-Weekender-Display-Leather/dp/B00LW3RCW8/ref=sr_1_1?
    s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1464118386&sr=1-1&nodeID=6358539011&keywords=timex+weekender)
  1. Seiko SNK809: This is a fantastic automatic watch. I have one on my wrist right now. It's a great intro to automatic watches. Link Here.
  2. MVMT watches. I've read a lot of good things about these. They have a very minimalist design which a lot of people like. Link here.

Watches are extremely personal. The colour of dial, bezel, and strap can be endlessly customized. Gold tones are very popular right now though a black strap/silver or white dial will always be a classic.
Another thing to consider is the size of the bezel. You'll want to pick the right size of watch depending on your wrist size.

I am looking to get my dad a nice dress watch as a father's gift at my upcoming wedding. Due to the cost of the rest of the wedding I'd like to keep the price under $100. He doesn't wear a watch everyday, but he keeps commenting on my collection and how much he likes them. Three options I have come up with are:

Seiko SNK793: He has commented on liking my SNK795 before, and even with a nice leather strap this will be under $100.

Orient Symphony: Orient is my favorite brand, and I know my Dad would really get a kick out of me telling him that. Plus this is a nice watch.

Citizen Eco Drive AW1236--03A: I don't know a ton about Eco Drives but they seem like a great option for someone who doesn't wear a watch every day.

u/stylefish · 8 pointsr/Watches

If you want to just mess with the movement, I would suggest a 7S26 as it's widely used in Seiko's 5 series (most people's first foray into automatic watches) and has good documentation.

If you'd rather buy a watch in case you want to delve into modding, I would suggest the SNK809 due to it's price which is usually ~$55 and has dropped to $41 during sales. It's powered by the 7S26 so the documentation I linked above applies as well.

For just taking apart the movement, you'll need a movement holder (the "vice" you mentioned), set of small screwdrivers, and small tweezers at minimum. For taking apart a watch completely, you'll also need a caseback tool, hand removers with dial protector, and crystal and hand press with dies and tips. I'm probably forgetting some essentials, but you can peruse Esslinger's tools page to get an idea. Finger cots, Rodico, and air blowers are usually nice to keep the movement clean for reassembly. I'm not familiar with the lubricants used, but if you ever decide to clean the parts with an ultrasonic cleaner, you'll want to look into those.

Aside from that, watching some videos and checking out some picture albums like those posted by /u/Slyvix will prove informative regarding workflow. His latest one was particularly enjoyable and includes lots of nice pictures.

I have $300 to spend on a watch, and I am getting absolutely lost in everything. I currently don't have a watch, I've just started in the corporate world (recent college grad), and am looking for something that I can look professional in, without looking gaudy. All I know is that I like simple and clean (design, not the song), so not really a bunch of complications (though a date complication is definitely a plus), and I'm a 5'9 average build guy.

I mostly wear business casual to work--black shoes, a colored button down of sorts, and slacks. Almost all dark colors.

I've googled around, and here are designs I like:

Emporio Armani Classic Chronograph

Seiko Cocktail Time

Emporio Armani AR2457

I'm conflicted for a few reasons. The easy answer is to get the cocktail and move on with my life--I know it has the best construction, and it's absolutely gorgeous.

However, due to weird religious conflicts, I'm not sure I can buy an automatic watch. I couldn't wear it on Saturdays, when I tend to be at my dressiest, so I was wondering if there were alternatives y'all could recommend!

In terms of the Armanis--I'm aware they're fashion watches, I'm aware they're often made by Fossil and what not, which means decent construction (but not what you're paying for), I used them as an example of appearances that I like.

So! Any thoughts?! =D Thanks in advance to all you kind folks!

u/GreenLizardHands · 1 pointr/intj

I wear an analogue watch, and have for about 15 years. I wore Fossil watches for the first 5 or so, and have worn the one I wear now for the last ~10 years. It's easier to tell about what time it is at a glance with an analogue watch. And really, that's how we think about and understand time, with approximations.

If you are like me, when you look at a digital watch and it says 7:43 pm, your brain will translate that to "about 7:45pm" before it uses the information. So, seeing 7:43pm vs 7:45pm doesn't make a difference in what it means to me. In either case, I know I have about 15 minutes until it's 8 o'clock.

For this reason, I find an analogue watch to be more intuitive/easier to use.

However, if they often need to know precise/exact times (i.e., they need to know that it's 7:43pm and knowing "about 7:45pm" isn't good enough), a digital watch might be a better option. I can't really come up with a scenario where this would be important (and one wouldn't have the time to just look more closely at an analogue watch), but I'm sure someone's job involves this sort of thing.

The thing that I like most about the watch that I've worn for the last decade is that it's low/no maintanence. It's one of the Citizen Eco-Drive watches that runs off of solar power. So in the ~10 years, the only service it has needed is replacing one of the spring pins (and it only needed that because I was a doofus and broke it while removing a link).

But really, you should just ask him. INTJs aren't all the same in their preferences for things. They're similar in that they come up with systems. A watch is a device that they'd be expected to wear all the time, i.e. it would become part of their system. In a bygone age, it would be a welcome part of any person's system (saving them the time of finding a public clock somewhere). But nowadays, everyone is carrying a phone around with them which they can use to tell time, and so they don't see the need to wear a watch, and may even consider it a burden.

TL;DR: INTJs come up with systems, but we don't all come up with the same systems. The only way to know what watch would best fit into your INTJs system (or if a watch would fit into their system at all) would be to talk to them about it.

EDIT: If you really want to get them a watch, maybe consider getting them something like a Timex Weekender or Timex Expedition Scout. They're no-frills, all practical options, and are low enough cost that they can be considered a safe "experiment" to see how he likes having a watch as part of his system. From there, you can find out what he likes and doesn't like, and us that knowledge to get him something more expensive for his birthday or something down the line.

Hey I also bought that one! I wore it for a day and decided it felt like a toy. I didn't mention it in my original post because I didn't think it was important, but I've decided against getting the steel Timexes. They're a little too light for me, and the Indiglo is a bit off on them. Definitely check out the Expedition Scout Metal or this one if you wanna give Timex another shot. They have a nice weight and look to them so as not to feel cheap or like faux metal. If not Timex, I've only heard great things about the Seiko 5. I actually plan to get this one next. Good luck!

u/myrmagic · 5 pointsr/Watches

The Seiko SKX007 is one of the highest regarded under $200 mechanical watch on most watch enthusiast sites followed by the SARB035 if you don't mind spending a bit more.

The Seiko SKX007 is a very versatile watch. It has a proven track record, a pedigree that spans decades and meets all the requirements you stated above. I wear mine every day and love it. It's a little big on small wrists (some people get the SKX013 because it's smaller) but IMO it's the best bang for your buck and will last you 20+ years if you take care of it and get it services once or twice during that time. It will serve you well and you will be hard pressed to find another watch that comes close to it.

As you can see I'm a huge fan of this watch. I wasn't when I first started looking at watches but I use mine ever day, more than I use my cell phone. It's just great.

Items list:

Phone: Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Otterbox Commuter, Nite Ize Steelie, InvisibleShield Glass

Wallet: The Ridge, Aluminum in gunmetal, cash strap

Watch: Seiko 5 SNK805, Shinola 18mm extra long leather strap

Breath Freshener: Using the Altoids Smalls tin to carry Altoids Arctic mints or Trident Original gum

Multitool: Gerber Dime Red

Knife: Buck Vantage small, Rosewood Dymondwood

Light: Massdrop Exclusive AAA Brass w/ Nichia 219 option. Basically a Lumintop Tool Ti, but custom made for Massdrop in brass.

Pen: Kaweco Supra, medium nib, Kaweco Blue ink cartridge (for now).

Die: SkullSplitter Dice d12 in Antique Brass

Flame: Vertigo Z-Plus butane double torch, Zippo High Polish Solid Brass case

Keys: ExoTac Free Key, Corter Leather & Cloth Bottlehook in solid brass, Transcend 16 GB JetFlash 720, cigar punch cutter, Prometheus Kappa Quick Release (brass), 2012 Dodge Avenger SXT

Parts of my EDC I'd love to acquire brass version of:

  • I wish they made a brass Ridge wallet. Machine Era made a brass minimalist wallet similar to the Ridge at one point, I think.
  • A brass pocket knife. I've seen a few but none that cause me to want to part with my current knife.
  • A brass cigar punch cutter
  • A brass USB drive. They have a gold colored version of the JetFlash I use now, but it's not brass.

BRASS IS THE BEST ALLOY KNOWN TO MAN. FITE ME.

I bought this watch about 4 months ago or so. I love it. was around $50 USD and it was automatic. I plan on one day getting a Hamilton but for now this will do. I replaced the strap with a leather one and the watch feels like a whole new watch. Feels so different I'm enjoying it. Maybe doesn't really go with my uniform but it's OK. For now I'm happy but i have been eyeing a chrono though ever since i found out about automatic thats all i want so not sure if ill get a quartz chrono or save up. Dat Omega Speedmaster though.

Edit: its this watch with this strap. Make sure its the 18mm if you go for it they have a 20mm and 22mm.

Hey man, as a small wristed fellow I do sympathise with you. If you're looking for some cheap aviation style watches, here are a few I would recommend.

  • Seiko 5 SNK803 - a classic, well loved, 37mm and pretty cheap as well
  • Tisell Pilot - more expensive at £159 but arguably worth it considering you're getting 40mm case, miyota 9015 movement which is pretty solid, sapphire crystal with ar coating, SuperLuminova and 100m water resistance.
Hope I've been of help, good luck!

Why everybody, I am looking to buy a everyday watch for under $100. I’m really just looking for a watch that will go with everything and I can always wear. So far the ones I’m considering in no particular order

Timex Weekender

This is nice because it’s cheap, and I could swap straps. However a lot of people complained of how loud it ticks, and it’s not water resistant

Timex Weekender Chronograph

This was my initial choice, but I have since second guessed myself and now am leaning elsewhere. I feel like the case is too thick, and it’s not too water resistant.

Invicta Pro Diver

I’m iffy on the metal band. I do enjoy the actual look of this, just not sure if it’s too classy.

Seiko 5 Automatic

This is the watch that’s in first right now. I would definitely purchase a leather strap for it off top, but some people reported it didn’t keep time well.

That’s my list. Overall, I’m just really looking for advice. I’m not very watch savvy, and would appreciate help by some of you pros. Let me know why these watches are good or bad, and offer some insight. I appreciate it!

u/tigerbravo · 2 pointsr/Watches

You've got a ton of options to choose from. To make the most of your budget, Seiko, Orient, Citizen, and Tissot are some brands to look at. Since you don't like sport watches, if you're just looking for one watch I would recommend the Tissot Visodate which is most of your current budget. You could pair it with a cheap Casio digital for weekend/outdoors wear. But hopefully you'd be able to expand your collection in time.

If you wanted to split your collection a little more evenly financially, there are tons of fantastic options in the $200 range. For automatic dress watches, look at the Orient Bambino range, I would recommend one of their 2nd generation models. Pair that with a Citizen Nighthawk or a G-shock for example and you'd have a highly respectable and seriously versatile two watch collection for your budget.

That isn't to say this is a better option than the Tissot and Casio. There are just a ton of options in your range. Some great value in automatics, and some great tech in quartz if you're looking at the right stuff. Hope you find something that suits you!

u/jppbkm · 7 pointsr/malefashionadvice

A: Congrats on deciding to dress more fashionably. I don't think that you should necessarily conflate this with dressing "more grown-up." Many grown-ups dress sloppily/non-fashionably/wear clothes that don't fit.

B: Good job reading the sidebar. For additional information I am a big fan of Alan Flusser's book "Dressing the Man." It focuses on what, today, is a formal wardrobe for the average man. It explains many of the "why"s of wearing items/fabrics/patterns. I also recommend the "Basic Men's Fashion" series of articles on the website fashionbeans.

C. There are a few keys to spending your money wisely. First, fit is key. Ask questions and read up in order to understand how each article of clothing should fit. Second, certain things are in or out of fashion. Pleated pants, for instance, are really out of fashion (with the possible exception of suit trousers). When in doubt, simpler is usually better when it comes to styling. Third, figure out what colors work together and what colors work for YOU. Your complexion will play a part in choosing what to wear.

D: It sounds like you may want a separate set of clothes to wear in the lab if there are really accidents as often as you say. It would just be unfortunate to buy some nice clothes and ruin them the first week.

E: The shoes are rather unfashionable. Some would even say "ugly." Ideally, shoes should be shaped to fit your foot. A squared or extremely pointy toe is a no-no. The toe of these is rather bulbous looking. Rather than coming to a smooth round toe they kind of flare out. In addition, the sole gives them a chunky look. This contrasts with the leather and the stitching just throws everything off. The shoes seem unable to decide whether they want to be a work boot style shoe (brown leather, chunky sole) or a more casual sneaker type of shoe (toe shape, contrast stitching).

F. It is sometimes said that your shoes should be the most expensive part of any outfit. Shoes can be pricey but when well-cared for they will really last. It is also a lot easier to find shoes that fit (for most) than pants or shirts as foot sizing varies less than body sizes. I would recommend a couple of the following classics.

  1. LL Bean Moc

  2. Clark Desert Boot in Beeswax

  3. Converse All Stars

  4. A nice clean penny loafer in brown leather.

u/phukka · 1 pointr/Watches

Frederique Constant

Very simple design, very elegant. Easy to wear as a daily beater, can be used to dress up or dress down. Quartz movement, which may be a downside to you. Moderate price range.

Orient Sun and Moon v3

Probably my favorite of the three choices I'm giving you because of the unique Sun and Moon factor. You can easily replace the leather strap with a nato to dress it down and not look tacky. Sapphire crystal allows this to be a daily beater, too.

Seiko SARB065 Cocktail Time

While not my favorite for this occasion, this is one of my grail watches. Gorgeous piece, should look far better in person than what Amazon shows (you can search this subreddit for some pictures that will blow your mind.) The color is incredibly unique and will probably get you some compliments by itself. Marginally harder to dress down with, so maybe not quite as versatile as the other two options.

These are just a few suggestions where there are literally HUNDREDS of watches that can fit your needs, from some really nice Timex pieces to stuff far more expensive. I'd advise against most divers because they're not traditionally dressy pieces. One possible exception is this Rotary Ocean Avenger, which is absolutely gorgeous in person, not as huge as most divers, but may be harder to find online, but easily found in jewelry stores. I'll probably be picking one of these up in the future (with my neat ~80% discount as a jewelry store employee), the collection is amazing, but it's still a quartz movement and overall lower quality than other options (unless you go with a Swiss Made Ocean Avenger.)

u/Frith_Inle · 26 pointsr/Watches

Hey nice looking watch man! All I know is that it uses a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, a common quartz movement in today's watches. Nixon is mostly associated with skaters. surfers, snowboarders, and other street sports of similar kind. As others have said though, they do not get much love around /r/Watches because they are considered a fashion brand. My first watch was a Nixon Timeteller years ago. It was good, then I lost it. Then I found it again recently.

Watch collecting can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you lurk around this sub for a while you'll see lots of different styles in all different price ranges. I love watches, but at the point in my life that I'm at right now (that being a broke college kid), I promised myself to stay in the sub $200 range for the time being. Got my very first watch! It was a difficult decision but I ended up with a Bulova Precisionist 98B257 in all black stainless steel. it has a Japanese quartz with a movement said to keep 10 seconds to the year. The dial is loaded with goodies from Day indicator between 4/5, tachymeter, a chronograph accurate to 1/1000 of a second, water resistant to 300m. Its all black red finish is perfect for my daily work attire, and easily matches my day wear super happy with this purchase! Also a great match to my red on black pc setup. now I cant wait for my Seiko 5 SNK807 too deliver.

It's mostly a rule, but here is the reasoning:

A) It's not something you will be able to pass down to your children or grandchildren. They wouldn't want it if did make it that long. It will be such an old technology that it wont interface with anything they might have. It's would be like your dad giving you a bunch of 8-tracks.

B) It's made of plastic and will get scratched and eventually destroyed. It wont even make it through your lifetime, which means you are plopping down $300 (give or take) on something that will last 3 years... maybe 4 if you are lucky. Lets be generous and say it loses about $50 in value each year before you have to replace/upgrade it. That's a lot of diminished value. A bottom of the line respected mechanical watch can last you 10 years easy, and a lifetime if you take care of it. You can get it for $140.

C) Watches have souls. Listen to [John Meyer talk] (http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/video-talking-watches-with-john-mayer) about his watches. The all-time top post on /r/Watches has meaning. Its 70 years in the making. A watch from a company not yet in the lexicon of culture passed on from a man to his heirs. My bet is that he never heard his Great-Grandfathers voice, but they both heard the ticking of that watch on their wrist.

D) As far as fashion goes... all I see here is the 5th all time top-post

E) Would you rather wear this or this

F) I would never hide a pebble in my ass.

u/goatboy1970 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Okay, that leaves you with plenty of options, then.

First direction you can go, and this is what I would probably recommend, is a metal band like this Seiko 5 or this Orient (use the code iloveorient to get 50% off at checkout). You should be able to get away with wearing these two watches with a suit on down, though wouldn't be appropriate with a tuxedo or a super-important interview. Both of them have well-respected automatic movements made in Japan. The Orient is a bit larger than the Seiko, as it's an homage to the Rolex Submariner, the most famous dive watch in history. It's look is both sporty and classic, so it works well in a wide variety of settings. The Seiko is slightly more formal than the Orient, but it also works in a variety of settings. For the record, metal bracelets aren't technically formal, but they'll work in most offices, and it sounds like it won't be an issue for you. Also, you could choose another color for the watch face, but the navy blue works with both black and brown ranges, so it's again safe for many settings.

The other options is to go with a leather or canvas strap on something like this Seiko 5. This is very similar to the other Seiko, but slightly more casual. The idea with this one is that you can swap out the straps (which you can do with the other ones, as well, but the metal bracelet is more of a leave it on for any situation). This allows you to change the look easily to dress it up/dress it down. You can throw on a brown or black leather strap for dressier situations or throw on a canvas NATO strap for casual outfits. Straps are around $20, and you can easily change the straps with a ~5$ springbar tool.

If you want to just one watch and just to leave the bracelet on, I'd go for the Orient. If you want to be able to change the look of it up, go for the second Seiko 5.

Looking for a recommendation, as I'm torn between a few diver watches and time is running out for me to make returns on Amazon:

Casio MDV-106

https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-MDV106-1A-Black-Analog-Reverse/dp/B009KYJAJY

Love the look, as got a cheap straight end-piece steel bracelet for it that I think looks pretty nice. Appreciate the no-frills features, and the fact that if it gets banged up, the low cost paid ($62 CAD) makes it easy to replace. Don't like the fact that it's almost not worth changing the battery on it due to the overall price paid, and I feel odd buying NATO straps and silicone straps for such a low-cost watch.

Citizen Promaster BN0150-28E

https://www.amazon.ca/Citizen-Mens-BN0150-28E-Casual-Watch/dp/B016R90VBK/ref=pd_sim_241_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=10SYNG7NDN8BK97N1E3N

Got it for a nice sale on Amazon ($187 CAD), and have another watch with 20 mm lugs so I can re-use existing straps. Love Eco-Drive and a 5- year warranty. Only dislikes are how cramped the watch face looks, and I'm going to have to get an aftermarket steel band for it as well.

Orient Mako II

https://www.amazon.ca/Orient-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Diving/dp/B01AK5TQXG/ref=sr_1_2?s=watch&ie=UTF8&qid=1519609215&sr=1-2&keywords=orient+ray

My favorite watch for aesthetics, and it's currently on sale for $208 CAD. Wary about getting an automatic, as I've never had one before. Not sure how I feel about their inherent inaccuracy, as well as the inevitable maintenance costs of $80 CAD +. every few years.

If anyone could offer some opinions on these three, I'd really appreciate it!

u/Nixtrix · 1 pointr/Watches

You don't see many of those around here because people here don't generally like open-heart or skeleton watches because the lower end ones are either bad movements and not really showing off anything remarkable or they just don't look good in most people's opinions.

If you were going to get an automatic I would suggest brands like Tissot, Hamilton, and Orient. Not saying Bulova is a bad brand, they do make good watches but the ones i listed may be some others to look around at so you can find something you might truly love.

I also found this Seiko so maybe this wildcard will be something you'll like! Hopefully that helps! :)

u/Big_Hoss_Butt_Floss · 80 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I mixed up your response above and for some reason I though you preferred the "busy" watch. Sorry, here's a better reply for simpler styled watches:

Tissot again makes some simpler watches. The Le Locle (linked) is one of their trademark pieces that is a bit above your price range but is certainly timeless. It is more expensive because it is automatic and not battery powered, but they make similar quartz movement watches.

Seiko's simpler watches are nothing special, but their dive watches are very popular among watch collectors, especially the "Sumo" and "Marine Master" models which are more expensive than your budget allows. These are definitely "casual" watches which could be worn every day, whereas the Tissot might trend on too formal.

The Bulova Precisionist series is probably too busy if you preferred the simple model I originally linked; I've been waiting forever for them to make a conservative, simple Precisionist to add to my collection to no avail. The original one I linked is probably the simplest one they make.

Another option, stepping outside the three brands I originally picked, would be to go with a Hamilton. This is a historic American brand, now owned by the same company as Tissot. Their quartz movement watches start at just under $300. Many of these are military styled but they make some slightly dressier, very simple ones as well.

I'll leave you with one last option which is often overlooked, and that is a Chinese brand called Orient. They are very affordable, much under your budget, and while they are not built as well as fine Swiss watches they are certainly good watches from a dedicated watch maker. They tend to be popular as an affordable mechanical watch brand, and I have no personal experience with their quartz watches, but they have a fairly dedicated fan base so they are probably worth checking out.

As a watch nerd I would rank the Hamilton watches as head and shoulders above the others, but in your price range your options are more limited stylistically.

u/jaeun87 · 3 pointsr/Watches

I know it's a little over, but this Orient would be a pretty decent choice.

Don't buy an Invicta or August Steiner as those watches tend to be junk (lower quality than other competitors). For Seiko, there are a few good automatic Seiko 5 watches that are loved by the watch community, but they are not dressy like you wanted, or come with leather bands. Maybe if you're okay with something not dressy, these are pretty cool watches as well:

College bars, jeans, and casual environments?

Sounds like you should probably be looking at Desert Boots (you can grab a good pair for $50 if you look carefully. They take a bit of breaking in, but then they feel great afterwards if you size properly), bucks (bad picture), boat shoes (pure summer shoes), and work boots.

Here is a boot guide, shoe guide, body type guide, and a general beginners guide.

Keep in mind that at your size you are limiting yourself a little bit. It is harder to find things that fit, and depending on your proportions it may be difficult to find things that fit well off the rack. Even at 183 cm 100 kg (6'0" 220) I ran into a lot of trouble. If you wish to make a change in that department as well as in fashion, I highly recommend /r/fitness, however that is entirely up to you and it is still possible to look good at your size.

u/ChromatinNazi · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

hey! 1st of all, I would suggest giving it a look at this guy!. He regularly posts here and I think in /r/frugalmalefashion. Great tips and looks!

I have had very good luck for all my outfits buying the Timex Chronograph which I wear almost every day and also this watch from So&Co which I saw previously recommended and I really liked. But that is just my style.

However, what really has changed my game has been straps. Just a couple of watches and a diverse set of straps and you are pretty much set! I cannot believe how easy it is to adapt my watch to any circumstance! Just mix and match! I remember I started with this basic set and just worked my way up from there.

Good luck!

Hamilton is a really solid brand. The Khaki is technically a military-style field watch, but it is done in a way that is very elegant, which makes it great versatile everyday watch. Personally, I'd save up a bit longer for the mechanical or automatic, but if you feel quartz is better suited to you, then go for it. Macy's is an authorized dealer for Hamilton, so you will get the peace of mind of a manufacturer warranty.

Also, if you wanted to give mechanical a shot without spending too much money, an option would be to try a cheap Seiko SNK809 / 807 / 805 / 803. You can get one for under $100, and it has a similar style to the Hamilton Khaki, plus the day of the week.

u/RamonTico · 1 pointr/Watches

I love the Tissot's, they are great quality and starting with a quartz watch is the way to go in my opinion, and if he wants to learn more about watches than he can start getting into automatics. I love how the Vinceros look, but they are fairly cheap chinese watches from a technical standpoint and their branding adds 100$ to their real price, so I would stay away from there, but as a starter watch it is quite nice looking.

Also, I love how these seiko's look, they have a metal bracelet, but it is much easier to buy leather straps than it is to find metal bracelets, so having both would be nice:

u/narwhalpiguy · 4 pointsr/gshock

If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.

My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

Hey fellow midwesterner,

Try looking at /r/frugalmalefashion for deals. You can really get some amazing deals there.

But besides that, here are the few things I can suggest;

Tshirts: [Uniqlo Supima Tshirts] (https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/men/t-shirts/short-sleeve/supima-cotton/), H&M Basic Tees (Just because they are cheap and fits me perfectly), Wohven (Tshirt subscription for $8 per month which delivers good quality tagless plain t-shirts).

Again, there are some of the basics, cheaper options that I can think of. Good Luck

I rather like wearing a watch, and decided to add a dive watch when I started diving. The first thing to decide is movement - battery, solar, or mechanical. For diving... I honestly think Solar is a great choice. No battery to replace, but also doesn't need service like mechanical. Citizen uses the "Eco-Drive" name for their solar, while Seiko just calls them "Seiko Solar". Seiko Kinetic is a similar thing - quartz watch with a movement based charging system - but they have a reputation for crapping out. The solar ones are basically bulletproof.

As you may know, if you want to dive a watch, simply getting something that says '200m water resist' isn't really enough. Watches that meet ISO6425 standards (which are specs for dive watches) will show 'Diver's 200m'. The proofing and testing is different, and the '200m/20atm' watches aren't necessarily dive ready. Wikipedia has a reasonable explanation of the testing differences. At the very least, you need a screw-down crown. Anything that says "Diver's 200m" on it will have that and be sufficiently reliable for diving work. Anything that says '300m' should be sufficient for at least basic diving... anything lower you're just going to have to ask the watch community about that particular watch specifically.

So - all that aside. Recommendations based on the digging I did while I was shopping. I ended up with an Orange Seiko Solar Diver. The Citizen Promaster divers are nice as well.

The 'Entry Level' seems to be this Casio. It's battery powered, but should last a long long time. It doesn't say Divers 200, but they have a reputation for lasting.

Cheap end of mechanical, the Vostok Amphibia. It's a completely different concept than the more traditional dive watch - uses soft seals and pressure to seal itself, rather than a hardened case. 'Automatic' or 'Self-Winding' mechanical, but it has a bi-directional bezel, meaning you can't really use the bezel for timing like you can on a true 'Dive Watch'. You can get em with a little scuba man on them, though. There's a bunch of different style Vostoks, but they're all functionally the same. Good watches.

Moving up in price a bit, Seiko makes some very nice mechanical dive watches. There's the SKX007, the SKX009, the 'Monster' watches (Available in Black, White and Orange), and some of my favorite looks - the Blue Lagoon and Turtle.

If you want to throw stupid money at the problem, my buddy has one of these Marathon watches which he loves dearly. They're one of the few divers you can get with actual radioactive tubes, so you don't have to charge the lume hands up in the sun.

Are you taking about wrist watches or a stopwatch you can wear around your neck?

If wrist watches I have some recommendations (I’m into wristwatches myself so sorry if I get a bit too excited). What is your budget?

I like to wear chronograph watches while I’m working directly with clients. That way I can start timing something right from my wrist and stop it with the same ease. All of our RBTs have tablets for data entry but a lot of the time (especially during bx) I find this to be faster.

Anyway depending on what you would like to spend there are a few options.

If you want a digital watch I would recommend any of the Casio G-Shocks. They are rugged, will take a beating and have a stopwatch function, most of them with lap/split time functions. They come in a huge range of both prices and features but they’re all great.

If analogue is your style (mine is) then I have a few recommendations. I was wearing the Timex Expedition Field Chronograph for a while. It’s a great watch for the price (about $40 or so) but it has a brass case and will get dented, as well as having a more scratch prone crystal. Currently I wear a Citizen Avion Chronograph , which is stainless steel and solar powered (so you don’t have to fiddle with a battery change every two years). It’s a bit pricey if you’re not into watches, about $140, and although it has a stainless steel case it’s crystal is not as scratch resistant as more expensive watches will be. I also sometimes wear a Seiko SSC031 which also has a chronograph but is a bit pricey (it’s a dive watch).

Of course you don’t need any of those. A cheap $10 watch or a $5 stopwatch will do the trick. I just like watches.

u/MTeson · -6 pointsr/Watches

If you don't care about the chronograph functions of the watch and just want something that looks more or less like that Shinola, your best bet is to buy a Seiko SKX007 and then modify the bezel insert, which is actually really easy to do. The Seiko SKX007 is one of the most iconic and cleanly designed watches ever made. It wears small and compact on the wrist compared to a lot of monstrously large watches from fashion brands, and it is an absolute tank that you can wear for years and years like an old friend. You can remove the rubber strap and outfit it with a classy NATO strap or even leather and it looks great as well. And since it's a dive watch, you can wear it swimming without a care in the world.

The bezel modification is easy - Buy this part from Dagaz and then with a hairdryer, heat up the black bezel insert that's on the watch. With a pair of thin pliers (i used my leatherman) the bezel should just come off and leave most of the glue still there. In any case the new ring will have paper you can peel off to reveal glue, and you just stick that sucker on there. It's super easy. Took me five minutes, and the original black ring is still usable.

For bonus points, go buy a double-domed crystal from CT Horology and swap it out. That will actually require a watchmaker/repair shop to do it for you. The place I went to charged me 25 dollars. You have no idea how much nicer it improves the look. The original flat crystal is fine, functional, looks great, but the domed sapphire is a whole new level, and doesn't impact the water resistance of the watch (if installed correctly).

The price of the Seiko, the bezel insert, the crystal, and the installation of same, is all under $400, and it really doesn't take any work to get it to look that way.

If you care about the chronograph functions of the watch, then I dunno. That green/black look is hard to come by. Even on the Rolex GMT Hulk there isn't a chrono.

Model: [SKX013K2]

The Seiko SKX007 is widely considered one of the greatest values in the dive watch category. This article over at Hodinkee explains this much more eloquently than I could ever hope to. This watch has received plenty of love and attention on r/watches, and for good reason. For it's quality and value, you can't get much better than the SKX007. But what about those of you who prefer a watch with a smaller case?

Well have no fear friends, the 38mm SKX013 is made just for you. This is nearly identical to the 007 (same movement, with slightly different aesthetics). And so I was thrilled when my father recommended this to me after expressing interest in the 007 (he's a life-long watch collector who also owns an 013). Read this execllent review over at WUS that convinced me even further that the 013 was the right choice.

"But I'm not a fan of jubilee bracelets!" That's a valid concern - but I can tell you from experience that the jubilee bracelet is EXTREMELY comfortable. If you're in the anti-jubilee camp, the 007 and 013 are available with rubber straps as well. And if you like Pepsi bevels, check out the 009 and [015].

hate to sidetrack your thread, but have you considered these? a daily driver for a carpenter, first thing that comes to mind is a g-shock. indestructible, holds perfect time, and features you could use. I listed a few others for you. Personally. I would get one of these 3, and wear a 007 after work/weekends. IMO, wear and tear is only cool on vintage watches. I agree, 007 is a super sturdy watch, but i'd be a little funny shaking it that much during hard work. Cheers! :D

This is a great start for your BoB but it seems like it's really a get somewhere bag (or should be). Here's a few comments.

  • Get rid of the candles - unneeded
  • Remove the passport (you won't be escaping to another country!) In its place, put a photocopy of your license.
  • Put your meds in a sealed, vacuum packed bag - if you don't own a vacuum sealer, get one, you'll soon be vacuum packing everything!
  • For the gloves, get a pair of Mechanix
  • Change the credit card to the cash - when the power is out, cash is king - keep many small bills
  • Watch the prepaid phone plans, the sim cards may expire - remember - any charged old phone can still call 911 without a plan!
  • a small solar charger for your phones and adapters for multiple phone types would be a good addition
  • Learn how to clean a fish
  • Replace the digital watch with a automatic or solar one, something inexpensive
  • Add something to carry water

    Good luck!

I'm sure some will laugh at this suggestion, since this is recommended by someone no matter the question, but have you looked at the [SKX007] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5MI3Q)?

I love minimalist watches and also love this dive watch. It doesn't hit all of your buttons, but it is reasonably rugged and good for getting wet. And, somewhat minimalist in design. There are a variety of (water-friendly) straps and bracelets available for it. And... there are lots of folks who would help you modify it: [a sterile black dial] (http://www.dagazwatch.com/apps/webstore/products/show/5239183), [a plain black bezel insert] (http://www.dagazwatch.com/apps/webstore/products/show/47551), [even some more minimalist hands] (http://www.dagazwatch.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3415547).

I don't know anything about [these guys] (https://www.artificehoroworks.com/shop/stealth/), but they advertise a "stealth SXK007" that's admittedly out of your price range (but well below the Nomos).

Another out of the box minimalist option: [Casio black-on-black G-Shock] (https://www.amazon.com/Casio-DW5600MS-1CR-G-Force-Military-Concept/dp/B001QFYDEC/). You're unlikely to find a more rugged waterproof watch.

This isn't technically under $100 but it's pretty close. I just got it and I love it. I like the way it looks better than the Weekender it replaced and the Seiko 5. Sure the Eco-Drive is a quartz movement but hey its accurate, won't run out of juice, and is surprisingly well-liked on /r/watches.

you might like some of the Timex watches, these two are my favorite

i've gotten a lot of compliments on the 2nd one (which i own). the only problem i find with it is the the band is kinda wonky, but it's nothing i'd worry about. for the first few weeks i thought it was a lot more fragile than it was, but i found that the trick was to just have it 1 notch less than too tight, so that it fit on but it had room to move as well.

the band problem is remedied by the 1st one, but imo the band looks sexier on the 2nd.

timex is really one of my favorite watch companies because they have a lot of watches with the aesthetic i like.

if you want, i can post a picture of what the watch looks like on my wrist. i have very small wrists too and the fact that i found one that i love surprised me.

u/PureDrifter · 7 pointsr/Watches

Here are some things to consider before buying and installing a strap :)

  1. Strap Width: Figure out what your watch's strap width is, usually called the "lug to lug" measurement. Watches commonly have 14-24mm wide lugs. A ruler works just fine. Length is usually not an issue unless you have far larger or slimmer than average wrists, if the stock strap works, you should be OK. WPT: check amazon/other sellers, often times they list the strap width. It's listed here as being 22mm for your watch.
  2. Strap Style: Purely up to you, some common styles other than the typical leather are Aviators (stitched+rivet for strength), NATO/Zulu (one piece of fabric/leather, very secure and simple), and of course, bracelets. Look here for more examples, though the relatively recently introduced Leather NATO isn't shown.
  3. Tools: I will say this once; BUY A SPRING BAR TOOL! They are available dirt cheap from amazon and ebay, and will greatly reduce your frustration level when it comes time to swap straps. (Note: No tools needed when swapping normal NATO style straps as they thread through the spring bars. You will need a tool to remove your stock strap and install the bare spring bars however.) Also a spring bar tool will reduce the odds of your tool slipping and marring/scratching your case while you try to compress the bar. Important thing to consider, especially if you have a plated or treated case as you can't just polish out scratches. I bought this one though there are a couple cheaper.

I am a huge fan of amazon for basic tools and even some straps. For NATOs I like to use www.natostrapsco.com as they have competitive pricing, great CS, free (USPS) shipping, and almost always have an extra 10-15% code on their facebook page. Their leather NATOs are very nice as well.

Here's a pic of a new strap I put on my Pulsar:

I think you know what brand this sub loves... But not without reason! In that range you really have to look at Seiko. There are a few watches you could buy, the Sarb033 is at the top of the spectrum. However I personally own and love it and It's a beautiful watch with good bang per buck, you do get something for your money! If your dad is into divers there are a few options as well. Either the turtle or the diver icon of Seiko, the SKX. Both really good watches as well. I hope I could help you and your dad.

Both Casio and Fossil are pretty well respected for this price range. They aren't as traditional, though, but still solid quality.

Casio has a nice diver as /u/wolfquinn mentioned. I own this, too and love it. Casio focuses mainly on digital watches.

Fossils tend to be more trendy or large. I own one, but don't wear it much because of its size. It is good quality though.

If you are looking for a similar watch to this Sturhling, I would look into certain models of Timex Elevated Classics or certain models Timex Expedition.

Seiko SKX007K

Really tough watch, which is good for a gym setting, not too flashy (because if you're thinking too much about how your watch looks at the gym, you're not working out properly), rubber strap is better than nylon or leather because of sweat. Plus, it's something that can easily be worn outside of the gym as well, just a great watch overall.

Having said this, I really urge you to look at a digital like this G-Shock. Provides a lot of functions that might be useful in the gym that you won't get with a watch like the easy reader or the Seiko I showed, they're tough as nails (I've had one for about 10 years now and is still in great condition), and they look right in a gym.

u/350ZisBae · 1 pointr/EDC

That looks good.

I too keep my EDC in a micro pocket and quite like it.

I somehow fit a Tide pen as well as a Sea to Summit T6 cutlery set.

But dude, you're getting a TON of nice gear, but you like ruin it with the watch.

If you can afford it, get this Timex with a nice NATO strap or the Chums "The Band" strap.

If you can spring the extra cash, go for this Timex

You won't regret either watch, I have both and couldn't be happier, however I'm a bit more of a fan of the T49905 because of its black casing.

Personal preference though, really.

Also don't go the Tacticool-Wanna-Be-NAVY-SEAL-My-Daddy-Is-A-Lawyer route. The SEALs don't use this Luminox and just because it's labeled as Navy or Marines doesn't make it the best or cool.

I will also suggest a copy of the Pocket Ref as well as a small iFixit screwdriver kit.

I purchased the big kit and keep the small screwdriver and a custom set of bits:

Two reasonably sized regular screwdriver

T6, T7, T8,

All three Pentalobe (for fixing Apple products)

Assorted phillips.

Congrats. I'm getting married on Friday, and I'm struggling with the same thing. I have a Hamilton, Tissot or a Movado (vintage, non-Museum) that might be appropriate. Still not sure what to do. I might also go watch-less because time is not supposed to be of concern during this kinda event.

The rule of thumb is the watch should be low-profile and simple. Something like this would be perfect, and you could get some use out of it afterward, too.

The Invicta is more of a sports watch, so it's definitely not appropriate. It's also huge at 44mm. It might be cool if you were a college kid out at a night club trying to get laid, but that's obviously not the case anymore. :) Don't let this watch ruin your life.

Armitron is a very low-end brand. You're better off going with a dress Timex from Wal-Mart. (Timex is respected around here because they offer decent products for prices anyone can afford and don't try to be more than they are).

Or for something with a blue face, that might do. A lot of non-watch people like Skagens, too, so you might want to get one of those.

I hope that helps.

Of course, the rules aren't all that important these days. I know a dude who wore Chuck Taylors to his wedding. Nothing wrong with that; it's the lovey-dovey shit that counts.

u/notaneggspert · 1 pointr/Watches

Right now this $10 Casio is the only slightly dressy watch I have.

I like it but the crystal (plastic?) has gotten more and more scratched from general wear. I don't think I want a nylon band since the watch will get wet frequently if I wear it while working.

I don't have a lot of money to spend but would like to get a slightly nicer analog watch with a date function for under $100. I plan to use this watch while bartending so it will be splashed in triple sinks for a few hours every day. But I might just wear the Casio I have now while working since it's already slightly dickerd and only $10.

So far I've found these two through Amazon:

$21 Tonnier

$29 Timex Easy Reader

If someone had a gun to my head I'd buy the Timex but I'm not in a rush to buy and need to do more research.

I'll link a few more to get an idea of the style I'm looking for. Definitely looking for a smaller watch that won't get in the way or snagged on stuff.

$25 SONGDU

$22 Biden

$20 Curren

$24 VAVC

Didn't do much research into those last couple but just linking the style I'm looking for and I'll add some more on. I like high contrast black/white faces but I'm also cool with red/brown/blue accents but the more color neutral the better.

Hi guys, looking for something similar to the Timex Men’s T49905 Expedition Rugged Field Chronograph Black/Brown Leather Strap Watch here

I like the black/dark case and face. Chronograph would be great but not a necessity. Band could be leather or NATO. I would like something that is durable and rugged as I plan to use it for camping, canoeing, etc. but also could go well in a casual setting.

Budget is $100-200, although I do like $50 price tag on this one, some of the reviews raise concerns about the durability and quality of the watch. If any one can offer any similar recs or has experience with this watch it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Closer Shot of Face

First step towards owning a collection of watches and I'm very happy with my purchase! It fits perfectly on my wrist and looks great.

I purchased the Seiko 5 off of Amazon: Here

I also bought a leather strap for the watch, but I couldn't find a 16.8mm one so I decided to get a 18mm one and people said something about the leather being able to stretch or something to that extent. If anyone has any experience with band swapping on the SNK809, any help would be appreciative.

Thank you all for inspiring me to get into watches!

u/greedhead · 5 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

It kinda depends on the rest of your style - what does a typical outfit look like for you?

Clark Desert Boots or another pair of chukkas might be a good start - they can fit well into most any casual outfit.

Vans Authentics, Jack Purcells, or Chuck Taylors are also good starter shoes and are usually good quality for the price - you can probably find better sales on other sites. This may be better if you dress more like a typical college student. I'd avoid the bright/loud colors for fall shoes.

Those are just wide suggestions based on knowing nothing about you. Examples of your usual style would help.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_FITS · 9 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

My current setup:

  • Seiko 5
  • Timex Easy Reader
  • 8 nylon nato straps
  • 1 brown leather nato strap

I'm in for about $150. I've got 22 different combinations, and 2 watches of known quality. His quick-release system is interesting I suppose, but that's the only thing here that is innovative.

EDIT: After giving it some more thought, I really do like his simple designs as well. It's difficult to find a nice clean design without including horribly intrusive branding as well.

> Doesn't a $500 watch keep time just as well?

Actually, most $10 watches keep better time than most $50,000 watches. Why? Because a $10 watch is a modern, highly precise quartz watch, whereas a $50,000 watch is an old-school mechanical watch, and strictly speaking obsolete.

So the first thing to understand is that people don't buy mechanical watches because they expect superior timekeeping. They buy it for one (or both) of two reasons:

  1. They want to impress other people by owning something expensive.
  2. They think mechanical watches are cool.

Mechanical watches exist in all price ranges, from a $55 Seiko 5 to a $1.5 million dollar Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie, and beyond.

What's the difference between those? The Seiko is steel, has a relatively simple self-winding mechanism that can mostly be assembled by machine, and all it does is tell the time, day of week and day of month. The Jaeger-LeCoultre is an all-mechanical 27 function watch that can:

  3. Play the familiar Big Ben tower-clock tune to mark the quarter hours;
  4. Play a tune on demand to tell you what hour it is, down to the minute;
  5. Tells the date of the year, keeping track of leap years;
  6. Has dials telling you how much wind remains in the timekeeping and the chiming springs;

...and a bunch more things that are rather more complex to explain. Any of these functions are easy to implement on a digital quartz watch, but doing them in a completely mechanical watch is crazy complicated. The watch has over 1,300 really tiny parts.

Basically, expensive watches are bought as status symbols, as toys, or both.

Oh, all that assumes that we're talking about new watches. There's also the sort of person who spends $50,000 on old watches. And by "old" I mean at least 100 years old—heck, you can easily buy 300 year old watches for that kind of money. Those have a different appeal than new watches. Nobody buys a watch that old in order to be able to tell the time.

Which brings up another point: a good mechanical watch, if it's taken care of, will last longer than any of us. For example, say hi to this 1868 watch made by the National Watch Company of Elgin, Illinois. Yup, it's almost 150 years old, and it's in excellent shape. Today's quartz watches won't last nearly as long.

Context, budget, and desired features
I am a mid thirties dad, with a desk job in the maintenance field. I work with my hands very frequently, am outdoors a lot and I normally dress casually. I will wear colored shirts once in a while, and often wear jeans or khaki shorts. I have a fossil watch with a bracelet that I got as a gift about 10 years ogo and quickly stopped wearing it after I got a cell phone. I'm sick and tired of pulling my phone out and being chained to it. I tried a smart watch, but I'd much rather live a simpler life with my EDC. I would like a watch for every single day, in the future, I could see getting a piece with more bling for dressier occasions. My budget is up to $300, but I'd rather be around $200, so that I'm not too hurt if it gets broken or lost.

Movements
As of now I am gravitating to non battery operated due to the cost of battery replacement with a water resistant model costing $70 to keep the guarantee. I realize that I can do it myself most likely, but I want a quality piece, and don't want to mess it up.
I don't mind solar.
Romantically I want a auto, but would prefer one with a winder also.
I'm worried that I would forget to wind a mechanical.

Size
My wrist is around 8 1/4 inch. I prefer a 38-42 mm.

Wanted features
Black dial
A simple face that is not busy
Replaceable strap
Date
Sapphire crystal
Brushed, not polished body
I'm not sure how bracelets work, I don't mind as long as it can be switched out to a nato.
*A black body would be nice, but I'm concerned about the looks of scratches showing though.

What I have looked at
Timex Men's T49961 "Expedition Scout"
I like the looks of this watch a lot, but the overall quality is lacking.

SEIKO 5 SNZG15J1
The only thing that I don't like about this piece is that the numbers are not placed at the outside edge near the bezel.

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8475-26E
I'm not a fan of the large numbers and the painted body will not likely hold up.

Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive
I really love this piece other than the polished body

Hamilton Khaki field HML-H69419363
This is a front runner other than being on the small side of my preference and me forgetting to wind it.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto #H70555533
This I like, although I would need to buy used.

Are there any other that you can recommend? The only place that I've really looked is Amazon. I cant seem to find a better retailer.

u/Bells_DX · 1 pointr/Watches

So I'm a bit of a newbie to watches and I figure a good way to start my collection is with a Citizen Eco-Drive, however, I'm really not liking the strap in terms of aesthetics or in terms of functionality. With the leathery underside, I'm concerned that it'll get sticky when wet like my current no name Walmart watch with a faux leather strap.

With this in mind, I've decided to look into getting an aftermarket metal bracelet for it, but my question is: how do I know what's decent and where should I buy it from?

I've heard that solid links are better than folded links, so I'd like to find a solid one, but what else is there aside from making sure it fits my watch? I see a couple "solid link" bracelets on Amazon for $20, but can I trust those to be any good? I'd prefer to spend around $100 or less, but is that a reasonable price for a quality bracelet?

u/Jardun · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I would like to throw in the Seiko 5 as a very viable option to the Timex Weekender. Little more expensive, but it goes on sale pretty often for like $50. It's a great way to introduce yourself to automatic watches, its really versatile and looks much better than it does in the bad pictures on the amazon article. Get a couple NATO straps like almost any of these that aren't to flamboyant and you are set for most occasions. Of course, if you just have loads of cash to blow then go for something nicer, but this is the ultimate basic watch in my opinion.

u/direstrats220 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

awesome, those shoes arent really my style either, just sort of a safe, classic look at a low price. Honestly both those shoes you linked look pretty cheap and awful. How do you feel about these Allen Edmonds? Much higher quality, very classy, great dress shoes, and can even be dressed down.

Are you looking for casual shoes, work shoes, dress shoes, or a combination? another mainstay classic are the Clarks Desert Boots, a great shoe for at the office or at the bar with your friends.

u/TrentWDB · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Yeah thats true, fashion oriented questions might be better here, but /r/watches does do fashion as well as functionality... Also you might want to give it a try and specify that your mostly focused on fashion (although 'that' they might not take too lightly too xD). I know they do respect cheaper watches as well over there, the Seiko 5 for example gets a lot of love

u/Hericus · 6 pointsr/Watches

My first automatic watch arrived this weekend, and I couldn't be more pleased! I decided on the SNK807 due to affordability and popularity in this community. Plus I have a tiny wrist as you can tell, and I think its 37mm case fits great! I bought 5 NATO straps from cheapestnatostraps.com and 2 perlon straps from Wrist Candy Watch Club.

NATOs -

I like them, they seem to wear comfortably and don't feel cheap, even though they were only about $6 a piece. My only complaint is that one of the straps I was sent is not what I ordered. Hopefully I can get in touch with them and sort it out.

NATO regimental strap Australia - blue, red and white

NATO regimental strap - navy and white. This one I accidentally got in 16mm, my own fault - d'oh!

NATO regimental strap Le Mans - light blue, black, and orange.

Eton NATO strap.

NATO regimental strap - gray, black, and white. I believe this is the one I received, this is the one I ordered.

I also purchased a spring bar tool from them and would not recommend it - the end was incredibly sharp and drew blood when I accidentally poked myself with it while changing out the original strap. I'm sure it would come more easily to someone who is more familiar with changing straps, but as a beginner, it was a very unpleasant experience.

Perlons -

When these arrived I was somewhat disappointed - my expectations of perlons was that they are more cloth-like, while these feel very plasticky. This just be the nature of perlons, and I was unaware of it, it's my first time hands on with them. I started wearing the blue one yesterday and it has seemed to soften up quite a bit, so they may just need some time on my wrist! I like the fact that they're adjustable, but one improvement I think they could make is to add something to stop the loop, because without the watch they can easily slide down and off the end of the band.

Beige perlon.

Blue perlon.

I will probably end up buying a leather strap for it as well, I've seen some pictures of the SNK80x on leather and I think it looks really handsome. Any suggestions?

I'm super excited to finally own an automatic, and glad I stumbled upon this subreddit! My wallet might not be as happy, I'm already lusting after a diver, probably going to pick up an SKX013 next!

u/Stunkinafuck · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm not a fan, personally. They're not most flattering and if you're just going to have one pair (I'd recommend having two biz cas shoes if one at least one is leather to give them a day to breath), I'd go with brown because I think its a little more versatile.

This guide is pretty helpful and has some links to further guides. But hard to go wrong with some oxfords, derbies, chukkas (the meme itself, Clark's Desert Boot in beeswax is your budget option), loafers, etc.

A lot of people will recommend getting some Allen Edmonds and similarly priced and they're not wrong. They're beautiful shoes that'll last you for years. If you can swing it, I would. But if you're not prepared for the investment and want something cheap, the Stafford shoes at JCP really aren't bad at all for the money. Here and here if you want boots. And they're on sale. But thats on a budget and they will crease, so use shoes trees after use.

Explore some of the styles I mentioned and check the guide. Don't just pick what I like, ultimately you have to like it.

Also, if you can get away with it at work, some nice clean and minimal detailed sneakers can be worked into a biz casual, depending on how casual we're talking. Like Greats Royale. But only if you can get away with it. I would definitely still get some nicer shoes.

u/karmapuhlease · -2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I don't think you dress all that poorly for a 19-year-old college student, for the record, but if you want to change your style to something (a) more mature and (b) that she will be impressed by, do the following:

Step 1: Go to J. Crew (probably J. Crew Factory, if there's one near you - similar stuff, and much cheaper)

Step 2: Buy 5 button-down shirts you like, 2 polo shirts, 1 pair of dark blue jeans (can also get this from Levi's, which might be preferable actually), 1 pair of Driggs pants (navy, brown, or dark green)

Step 3: Buy a nice pair of casual shoes. I've been getting a lot of compliments on these recently, and this is a great price for them (I paid 79 euros for them when I was travelling in Europe this summer, didn't know they had U.S. locations until I just checked). /r/MaleFashionAdvice has been recommending Clark's Desert Boots for a long time, and you can't go wrong with them either.

Seiko SKX007

Price: $200-$250

Movement: Automatic, 7S26

Style: Dive

Size: 42mm w/o crown

Link: Amazon product page

Description:
A "forum favourite" and excellent watch for any new collector is the SKX007. The SKX line of Seiko dive watches are widely loved for their classic looks, workhorse durability, and appealing price point. The watch is available on a rubber strap or steel "jubilee-style" bracelet, and there are dozens of aftermarket bracelet options to suit anyone's desire.

The watch has the look of a classic dive watch with its black rotating bezel and luminous markers. A version with a "pepsi" red/blue bezel is offered (SKX009) and is also quite popular. The watch has a hardlex (mineral) crystal and is rated to 200m, which is more than enough for all-weather wear and casual swimming / recreational snorkeling.

There isn't much else to say here, but please feel free to add comments with your experiences with / love for the SKX007. It is a rugged, classic, reliable watch and is so well-loved for good reason. Anyone looking for a sub-$250 watch would be mistaken not to consider the SKX007.

Personally:

  • A nice pair of chino's in black, navy, or stone
  • A pair of nice chino shorts that sit above the knee
  • Plain coloured tee's with no prints - I have black, white, navy, charcoal
  • A nice leather belt
  • A few pairs of shoes - Personally, I have Clarks, a pair of leather woven boat looking shoes like this, and some sneakers (eg. Nike Roshes) in white or black.

I feel like those are essentials, anything after that is a bonus. You could add extras in like a simple watch (eg. Timex Weekender; straps are customizable), a suit/business attire, jackets such as a bomber jacket, or whatever else you think you need. It all comes down to what styles you are into tho!

Good place to go for inspiration is r/malefashionadvice or r/frugalmalegashion if you have a strict budget. They have essentials guides for ya over there.

You won't find a good skeleton watch in that price range. If you do find one it may look nice, but more than likely it'll be very cheaply made and won't be built to last. For around 150 you have a ton of options. I'd recommend the

Seikon SKX007

or various Seiko 5's 1 2

Orient Mako, it comes in a variety of colors

Deep Blue makes a nice dive watch, this is the quartz version, the mechanical version is a little more expensive.

You can also look into homage watches like Alpha but these are lesser quality than the ones listed above. I'd stay away from brands like Invicta, Stuhrling, and even something like Skagen. If you're going to shell out $150 might as well get your money's worth.

u/daxelkurtz · 1 pointr/Watches

It's good to think about the investment, but don't worry that you'll be wearing them for eternity. There's selling and trading any time you want. But more than that - one day, you will have some money to spend. Maybe not a lot, and maybe not every day, but I promise, it'll come.

I'd consider:

A Vertigo Diver One V2 (about $250) - the blue I think is particularly cool.

A Timex flieger (<$40US) - first watch I ever bought. I totally still wear it.

The Bambino ($150)- a fine little dress watch, modern and sleek.

A black-on-black diver, such as the Orient Ray Raven ($200) - this is a fine watch that also is a little different.

The perfectly lovely Seiko 5 (also comes in black, blue, beige) ($55), and/or a titanium Seiko ($88). A lot of watches that cost a hundred times as much as these will deliver less to you. I'm tempted to say "most," even.

u/ImADude13 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Alright - with all of those things considered...here is my advice. This Seiko 5 is well within your price range and can work in both casual and professional settings. I have one myself, and it's much better looking in person than in the stock photos. Additionally, at only 38mm wide and 11mm thick, it is quite small and won't look big on your wrist (I don't know your measurement, but you should be good). Now, you said you like leather - I suggest putting this hadley-roma strap on it. You may need a spring bar set to help you out, but it's really easy. These three purchases will still put you in at around $50 under budget and a sweet looking wrist piece. Also, if you're looking for what the final product will look like, here is mine with the exact same set up

If you follow this sub-reddit, I think you'll notice a trend of what is considered good and nice.

Most people here will recommend an automatic over a quartz, but quartz has it's place for certain applications. I actually prefer hand wound mechanical watches over the other two.

For formal, most people will tell you to look at Seiko Presage line to start your watch obsession.

Other choices are usually from Orient, Tissot, Tissel etc.

https://smile.amazon.com/Seiko-Automatic-Analogue-Rubber-SKX007K/dp/B000B5MI3Q?sa-no-redirect=1

For a tool watch, Hamilton Khaki line is very popular.

For a first nice but really inexpensive, Casio Duro.

Check the sidebar for FAQ, lot of good info there.

Now, that is the common recommendations. If your taste leans more to bling, there are plenty to choose from - heck you can get a Rolex with a diamond bezel, but those don't get too much screen time around here.

Recommend me a watch as a new pilot in the airline industry:

Most pilots have some kind of watch on, I'm trying to graduate from wrist bracelets go a grown up watch. I used to rock the Citizen Eco 37mm that I really liked, the size was just right and the style was simple and classic. Never worn a steel clasp wrist but would consider it if I could find the right one.

I'm flying with captains that are older than me so it could be a nice ice breaker when they see me reach for controls etc. My wrist is small however so I don't know what would be a good fit. Budget is around $300 I'd like it to show at least the date, stopwatch function would be cool too but not important.

I frequent /r/watches but I'm no expert and they would be able to give you better recommendations. That being said, I'm often at constructions sites doing work with concrete, vibrating machinery, heavy chains, etc so I do have experience working in rough conditions while still needing to look presentable when I'm at the office or laboratory.

Off the top of my head, here are my recommendations:

Bernhardt Field Watch. I wear this daily and my last post on /r/EDC has one which you can look at my history to see. I highly recommend this.

Seiko 5. It's an automatic so the moving parts have a higher chance of failing but it is used by many as a beater watch. It's tough enough to withstand a lot and cheap enough to replace. A leather band replacing the NATO strap will make it look more presentable. Again, I own this watch as well and I posted a picture of it in /r/watches.

Luminox has a reputation for being tough but the aesthetics might be close to G-Shock

Hamilton comes to mind as well, they make pretty good watches but I have no idea how well they hold up. The one I linked seems pretty robust.
