Hi r/watches! Most of the women who have written to this sub for engagement watch advice either have very different budgets or SOs with very different styles than mine, so I was wondering if I could ask for your guidance/approval! I sort of doubt whether I have the guts to propose myself, but regardless the idea is to have the perfect watch on hand when the time comes (he's told me just to ask) -- plus, I'm going to see his best friend and also his brother over the course of the next month, so I'd like to have a solid idea of what I'm aiming for to run it by them!
Here's the breakdown: I have told him to absolutely never spend more than 3K, but for a really lovely watch, I'd be open to stretching a little beyond that (I have ~2.5 saved now). He's in tech (well, we're grad students for now, but eventually) so definitely a desk job type. He dresses fairly nicely for his field-- on a normal day, he wears a causal collared shirt with jeans or khakis-- and is about 6'2" with a slender but not super-skinny build, probably about 175 or 180 lbs (1.9 m/80 kg). Lower-maintenance watches would probably be better suited to him, like ideally no date, because I lack confidence that it won't just trick him into thinking there are 31sts in months where they don't belong. However, I want this to actually be a nice gift that will last and potentially eventually go to one of the many children we plan to have, and I'm sure he will bring it in to have it maintained.
I am strongly inclined to go with a leather band over a bracelet. Style-wise, [he seems to like this sacrilegious watch I bought him for Christmas before I discovered this sub] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HG08YEG/ref=wl_it_dp_v_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3BSX9GDNHBET8&coliid=I3H27771YTNYAK). He's said these are his favorite grad-school-priced watches 1 [2] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNDC33-Classic-Leather-Chronograph/dp/B004JY6X90?ie=UTF8&colid=3BSX9GDNHBET8&coliid=I2YQVOOD2BMDOD&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl) [3] (https://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-BM8475-26E-Stainless-Leather/dp/B005MKGOOY?ie=UTF8&colid=3BSX9GDNHBET8&coliid=I3SE95ENY1DIU9&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl).
I think that Nomos' watches looks very sleek and sophisticated (and he likes colorful watch hands), and the Tagente seems to be a favorite on here for weddings and engagements. Personally, I think that some of the TAG Heuer Carrera 1964 Chronographs are beyond stunning, but I'm not sure I have the know-how to handle a grey market purchase. Is there anything else that might be worth considering in this price range/based on the styles he likes? Would you be OK with getting a simple, sleek watch like a Nomos Tangente Gangreserve or Tangomat as an engagement present? (I know most girls seem to want something glittery, but I'm much more on the simple side of things -- is that OK in the watch world?) Is there a reasonable place to look for one of those beautiful Carerras (or my understanding is that a Chronograph might not even be appropriate for this type of occasion?)
I really appreciate the resources you've put together here because I've already learned so much. Thank you for any thoughts or guidance you have -- I am kind of in shock that I'm doing this but also really excited!
You actually started out exactly where I was a few years ago. I'm still learning, but here are a few things that I've picked up along the way:
Alrighty, lets give this a go.
> What colours look good with what?
It depends. You can't go wrong with a black or navy watch face, with a steel case. Stay away from anything gold since it can look super tacky if not done exactly right. If you want a more casual/military look you can get a watch with a PVD (black) case, but these don't age very well in my experience.
If you want something that is sporty, orange watches can look amazing, such as the cult-favourite Seiko Orange Monster.
>Should my watch match my pants?
Doesn't matter, sorta. For 99% of what you will be wearing, as long as you match the watch (in particular the strap, more on that later) to the occasion everything will be just fine. You don't wear an Orange Monster to a funeral, nor do you wear a dress watch to the beach.
Changing the strap on a watch can totally change the looks. You can take a sporty Fleiger style watch on a bright NATO strap and put it on an ostrich leather strap. It can now be worn at pretty much any formal event including weddings and funerals.
> Hair?
That's a new one. I honestly have no idea how one would match a watch to their hair, but seeing as I am currently wearing my watch on a bright orange NATO and have a mohawk (long story) I guess it is sorta possible.
Serious answer: Don't worry.
>When should I go for simplicity and when should I go for elegance?
It is personal preference. I like watches that are as mechanically complex as possible, since it appeals to the engineer side of me. I also like my watches to be extremely readable, since I use them for flying at night, where I NEED to be able to read them in the dark with a quick glance.
Others like their pieces to be as minimal as possible. It is up to whatever you like. On the other hand, you need to make sure your watch fits the occasion. No massive dive watches while meeting The Queen.
Now that we have your questions out of they way, here are my suggestions for some quality watches on a reasonable price point.
If you are looking for a good-for-everything watch, you have a few options. If you are looking for an automaitc watch (no battery, purely mechanical) you really can't beat the SKX007. It has excellent durability, classic looks, and the lume (glow stuff on the dial) is excellent. There is no battery to die, although you may need to get it services in a decade (or get a new one). Leave it on the bracelet for a sporty everyday look that can go with a suit, to a wedding, or a funeral. Throw it on a NATO strap (how I wear my watch every day) for comfortable everyday wearing. Get different coloured straps for different things, and change it up. A new strap can make it look like a totally different watch.
If you want something that will do almost any occasion without a mechanical movement, basically any Citizen Eco-drive will do the job. I myself like the Citizen Nighthawk, although it might be because I'm a pilot. The slide rule on the outside is great for addition/division (how much to tip, how much tax, etc.) and it will tell a second time zone.
If you are looking to make a statement, there is nothing that tops the Seiko "Orange Monster". This thing is built like a tank, the utomatic movement is proven, and the lume is out of this world. It also comes as the "Black Monster" if you want to be a bit more subtle.
If you are looking for a dress watch, I would recommend the Orient "Union" as it has a durable, in-house movement and great looks.
If you are looking for something badass that will be great for nighttime, there is the Traser Code Blue. It is a very durable quartz watch designed for military operations. It has vials of tritium (hydrogen with two neutrons) and will glow without any exposure to light for at least a decade.
If you are looking for a digital watch, I would recommend either the Casio Mudman if you are looking for a large, indestructable watch (That is also allowed for space travel by NASA) or the Casio F91W which is much slimmer, but less durable.
Possibly one of the best deals in "stylish" watches is the Timex Weekender. The come in a million different colours, have an electric illumination, and are very stylish and durable.
STAY AWAY FROM FASHION WATCHES!!! These include brands like Fossil, Nixon, etc. They are basically the same movement out of a $5 Wal-Mart special in a shiny case. Stick to reputable brands such as Casio, Seiko, Citizen, Timex, etc. If you are unsure about a brand, find a thread on the Watchuseek forums about that brand and that thread will probably tell you all you need to know. Also, stay away from Invicta. That company has shitty quality control and makes sub-standard products.
My advice would be to get the SKX007 on the bracelet, and then grab a few NATO straps. I have had great customer service interactions with Clockwork Synergy. Their straps are of decent quality, and their service is second-to-none. If you have a little cash left over, grab the F91W for chores are hiking, or anywhere you may need a stopwatch and illuminated face (i.e. Flying).
Three completely different watches I'll recommend for you because I'm not really sure of your style or what you want and I'm not sure you are either. All of these are from good brands and have good movements at a good value and you can't go wrong with any of them.
Tissot Le Locle
http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-TIST41142333-Analog-Display-Automatic/dp/B000JKSS8M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421482962&sr=8-1&keywords=tissot+le+locle
Great movement from a good brand, available in several color combinations. Don't own one yet but I plan on it. Fantastic watch and a beautiful piece.
Hamilton Field Khaki Auto 42mm
http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H70555533-Khaki-Field-Black/dp/B000EQ0BM2
Another fantastic piece. Very very versatile, not really sure if it's your style as its more of a military design but it's built like a tank and has a very iconic history. The Hamilton field Khaki was commonly worn in WW2 and a couple other wars. Same great movement as the Tissot, highly recommended.
Obris Morgan Explorer II
http://www.obrismorgan.com/explorerii.html
Going a completely different direction is a divers watch. Also very versatile and sporty at the same time. This one is from a smaller brand but it has a very respectable movement in it and the brand has been highly regarded in what they have put out. While it is the cheapest that doesn't mean it's the worst by any means it's just the best value of the three. It comes with a Miyota 9015 which is just as good if not better as the ETA 2824 which the other two have and a sapphire crystal. It's a great value if you like the looks of it I would highly recommend it.
While I wouldn't recommend the Versace or really any fashion brand at all it's your choice in the end. If you like it but it, wear it, and love it but I would highly recommend any of the three above. There's plenty of options out there but these three should give you a good variety. If I had $1100 to spend on watch(es) I would buy these three in a heart beat because with these three you would have a watch for every possible occasion in your life. Obviously you're not going to buy all three but any of these three are versatile enough to wear pretty much anywhere. Best of luck!
Most bras use the UK sizing when you are in the post DD size. There are a few exceptions.
Bravissimo has huge selection, as well as figleaves and amazon carries a lot of them. If you want to try on IRL nordstrom will carry your size in most stores.
If memory serves (see i dont even remember because UK sizing is king) 32K = 32H which is one band and cupsize larger than me. You have a lot of options but for me i prefer panache (particularly cleo which is a sister brand) bras mainly because they cater to smaller bands and deep (vs wide) cups.
Next step is figuring out you breast shape and trying on bras. Fyi after 20yrs of cramming myself into too small bras my initial size worked until i had the mythical “tissue migration” and went up like an extra cup size so i would warn you about buying a ton of bras initially because boobs can sometimes inflate after years of being compressed ;)
I really like the panache cleo marcie, its been my goto for several years (and sizes) now. But i probably tried on tons of sizes and styles over the years. But if you are full on top its a great place to start and has come in a rainbow of colors over the years.
Amazon isnt a bad place to start ordering bras because of free ship and returns and there are lots of shapes and styles.
Try a few and post fit results here (you dont have to post pics, just this fit great in this way but didnt work because of this...)
Odds are good you will need a deep cup vs a shallow one because generally H cups are. So panache is a good place to start. Freya is another brand (i found the bands were not firm enough when i tried them, but this was years ago) bravissimo has their own line of bras, curvy kate makes bras in your size (ive never tried them as ive heard they run wide and shallower, but i cant say for sure)
You can literally search 32H bras on amazon and scroll through options.
Goddess comes in US sizing, and a couple other brands but UK tends to be the popular big boob bras. The brits definitely have us beat bigtime on better bras ;)
https://www.amazon.com/Panache-Womens-Underwire-Sports-Bra/dp/B005X5FG2O
These can be pretty compressing so i preferred going up a size ie 32H when i wear a 30H in other bras, but id start with your size and go up if you need to. Just be aware of sister sizing. Ie 30H = 32GG = 28HH. Go up a band go down a cup, and down a band go up a cup.
So 32H = 34GG is one band bigger but same cup. Confusing but bras can be ;)
https://www.amazon.com/Panache-Cleo-Marcie-Balconnet-Bra/dp/B00BKZXPZ6
https://www.amazon.com/Panache-6951-Jasmine-Underwire-Bra/dp/B01N9DCFV7
Id highly recommend using a unlined cup bra like marcie or jasmine to find correct fit. Lots of girls want/are used to foam cup bras but they dont mold to you like a “cut and sew” bra and make it hard to diagnose fitting issues. There are some foam cup and spacer options out there in your size but id start with the inlined for fitting purposes first.
Check out bravissimo’s site too and filter by your size. The options will for sure blow your mind ;)
Most "minimal" quartz watches have <10 USD movements in them so what you are paying for is fashion. These are the MVMT, Daniel Wellington, Nixon, Fossil, ect. You can buy them if you like the way they look, there is nothing wrong with that, but know they are built fairly cheaply and marked up to +$100 for no reason other than fashion. You can checkout DHGate and buy a fake DW watch for $7-12 from China that will be identical in quality to the actual DW watch, and could potentially even come from the same supplier! (not recommending, just commenting)
It really depends on what styles you like and how much you want to spend.
Watches I would recommend that are in my opinion minimal:
Casio Men's A158WA-1DF.
Its not super aesthetically minimal, but its ultra cheap, I think it is relatively stylish, impeccably reliable, easy to read, good features (light, alarm, stopwatch, long battery life). This watch got me through a year aboard a Nuclear Submarine and served me well as an alarm clock, stop watch, and time keeper. It dresses up and down very easily, and I wore it to dinner in foreign ports as well as in the engine room taking logs on equipment. I still have it in my rotation. At 33mm thick, with an 18mm band that tapers, this watch has a very low profile, minimal wrist presence. For 12 bucks you cant not want one.
Junkers Bauhaus
Much more expensive, especially for an entry level piece, but very well made. Mechanical, Japanese movement, built in Germany, certain to impress watch enthusiasts and normies alike. Its automatic, meaning it does not have a battery, and a mechanism winds the watch up due to the movement of your wrist throughout the day. This also means that if you dont wear it for a few days it can stop running, but all you need to do is give it a shake and set it again to get it going. There are some quarts models by Junkers that are cheaper, also even some models with Automatic Swiss movements, worth taking a look. Some cool features this watch has are the power meter, so know by how much the movement is wound as well as ability to perform as a 24hr watch for military time. Easily made a dress watch but good as an everyday casual watch as well. 41mm case, so it will wear very modern (ie large).
Sieko 5
This watch is not as minimal in the aesthetic sense, ie the face has more than just tick marks at each hour, and it has both day and date functions. It is another automatic, and I will argue that it is still pretty minimal. At ~50-60USD is is a perfect entry level choice for a first automatic/mechanical watch, and comes in several colors. Well made for the price. At 37mm it wears much smaller than most popular fashion watches (one of the reasons I recommend it as a minimal watch). It will suit you in both casual and fomal settings, and will appeal to both watch nerds and every day people. Not gaudy or pretentious like a Swiss made, gold piece, but it has some character and soul. I would recommend if you buy this watch to also pick up a band, as the one supplied from Sieko is uncomfortable and unattractive in my opinion. The watch will do well on a Nato band, or a light tan leather band (check out the amazon reviews user photos)
Casio Men's MQ24-7E
Another Casio, not as versatile since it is very casual, but undeniably minimal. Very similar to the watch worn by the Pope. If you want ultra cheap, reliable, and analog this is a good choice.
There are many, many other good choices out there. Good Luck, and I hope this helped!
So the event came and went very well- a great Fourth overall, really, so I thought I'd share what I ended up going with, and say thanks for your help.
I was most attracted to this look (thanks, user tintinrintin), or at least the color combination, so I set out to create something similar. The Falling Down image changed my mind about short-sleeved button-ups (not saying I'll never give it a try but, once I saw that, it was all I could think of), so I decided to go with long sleeves and roll them up, which is a look that I already enjoy.
I'm a tall guy, so I can only shop at certain online retailers (and NO brick-and-mortar retailers). I went straight to Gap.com, where I usually have good luck.
I picked up 2 shirts: this one and this one. Long story short, the cut / fit of the 1969 shirt was terrible, and the sleeves were so tight, I couldn't possibly have rolled them up. the first shirt, the "Clean Chambray Shirt," fit great, and seems reasonably well-constructed. I'll likely buy another in grey.
Down low, I picked up 2 pairs of pants: these ones and these ones. Again- the cut / fit of the 1969s were terrible. I'm only slightly muscular (so far), and I could barely fit my thighs into these. I couldn't even bend over to get my socks on.
On the thread's advice I stayed away from boat shoes, but I still wanted something slip-on. I went with these. I ruined the great price by paying $15 for 2-day shipping but, when they arrived, I was happy with them, and the total price.
I tried cuffing the pants (do you call it rolling the pants when they end up above the ankle?) and, while my companions felt that I could pull it off, they preferred the way that the legs stacked on the shoes.
I picked up this belt mentioned in this article that Party-Mafia linked to, and I think it's a great, inexpensive belt.
Lastly, I wore this watch, which I've owned for awhile (and love), and one of these little guys because anchors.
Thanks for the help, MFA. I love this sub and I hope this crummy reply, in some small way, repays you for the help and inspiration that you provide me.
I've nursed my twins for 16 months now (and pumped at work for months 3-11). Here's my thoughts:
Bottles: I got tommee tippee. Medela makes bottles for the pump you can pump right into. My girls loved them, but they drank the milk SO FAST. Even the "slow flow" nipples were way too much. Everyone told me to get so many bottles but we were fine with about 10 between the two of them. I'd get no more than a couple of any brand to try before committing.
Formula: You don't need more than a small can on hand. It goes pretty far if you're just using it to supplement. They also sell these ready to use "nursettes" that just come with a disposable nipple you can screw on. This is probably what they'll have at the hospital. Depending on the hospital you can probably also get them to send a couple of packs of it home if you ask. Super convenient.
Pump: You need a pumping bra. Life changing. I had this and loved it. Also Lasinoh makes great bags that are great for storing/transporting the milk and cheaper and tougher than the medela bags.
Other: You might want to get some of the cheap nursing tanks that you can wear under any kind of shirt. Then you can just wear regular clothes out and about, and lift up the outer layer and pop down the tank without having to expose post-baby stomach.
Other than that, it's kind of personal preference. I never used lanolin or nursing pads, despite buying a ton. I leaked for the first two weeks and then never again. And I ended up liking a throw pillow better than any of the big nursing pillows.
Good luck! The book "Work. Pump. Repeat" is a fun informative read for those of us who like to be over-prepared ;)
i think either are fine watches, and perfectly worthy gifts, but in my honest opinion neither strike me as "last forever family heirloom" material. The Citizen is not what I would call a timeless design and is likely to look dated at some point. The Shinola is a little more classic but... it's a cheap quartz movement in a well-designed but somewhat cheaply made case. And while there's absolutely no shame in wearing or enjoying either of these watches, neither seems like the kind of thing that will be treasured for generations either.
In the end, though, the best gifts are the ones given with thought and consideration for what the recipient might like. You love your husband, and I bet you know what he'd like. Follow your heart, engrave something thoughtful on it, and I'm sure he'll love it.
For my tastes, in this price range, if you want something stylish I'd look at a visodate, or if you want something a little plainer, try something military-inspired like this junkers or Hamilton field watch. For something a little dressier, also consider a SARB033. Also, I believe all of those watches are available in either black or white if that's a preference.
The designs of those watches are all much more classic and likely to age a bit more gracefully.
Depending on what you are looking for, here are a couple of recommendations to keep your eyes peeled for while shopping. You might be able to find them at various stores around town, but I’ve sourced mine from Amazon with no issues:
Casio Men's AE1200WHD-1A Stainless Steel Digital Watch - World Time
This guy looks sharp, has a metal band, and hosts quite a few features such as: light, alarm, timer, stopwatch, and date display. Kind of a “dad watch” but very clean and practical for the price.
Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Duro Analog Watch, Black
This is a cool diver watch that is a huge bang for your buck. It looks quite a bit more expensive than it actually is. Has a one-way rotating bezel (dive function) that is very secure, a locking crown, and you can swap the band to tailor the look to what you are wearing. It is actually water resistant and I have seen people use it while diving. I put a striped nylon strap on mine to get that James Bond Rolex Submariner vibe.
Seiko Men's SNK809 Seiko 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Black Canvas Strap
This is probably my personal favorite. You can get it in a couple of different color schemes and I got mine (black) for around $60. This is an automatic watch so there are no batteries. It winds as you move, which is great if you wear it everyday, but not so much if you swap it out for a couple of days. It’s pretty small and lightweight and the lume (glow in the dark, Seiko is usually regarded at being very good for it) on the face is insane. While backpacking I’ve woken up in the middle night with the face still glowing as if I had just flashed it with light. You can swap the band on this as well, and I’ve found the NATO straps to be a little nicer than the standard canvas strap. It’s isn’t as dressy, but definitely a great watch. The movement is also a pretty unique Japanese movement that scrolls like most higher end watches instead of “tick tick tick” which can be loud and annoying at times.
There is also the Timex Weekender option. They are pretty cheap and you can find them everywhere. They are available in a ton of color options so for $100 you could probably grab a few different styles. They make a bunch of designs of them as well, but they are definitely just cheap everyday watches and can be quite loud.
There's not a whole lot to go on here, what is your goal? Some people would recommend the sidebar, but personally I think it's a bit much and it tends to homogenize how some people look.
I would say, start off with finding some well-fitting casual clothes. Some white t-shirts, a pair of nice blue jeans (Try Levi's, 511's or 513's. Or spend a little more and get something nicer, like Second Narrow or 3sixteen.), and most importantly some footwear would be a good start.
For footwear, I'd recommend a pair of sneakers. What you get is up to you. Some recommendations I would make would be:
Vans sk8-hi's
Vans Old Skools
Adidas Stan Smiths
Air Force Ones
I'd also suggest a pair of boots, but it might be out of your price range. I'm a fan of black boots, although most people on this subreddit would recommend brown ones. Some nice boots to start off with would be:
Thorogoods (the plain toe is nice as well)
Chippewas
Clarks, although personally I would recommend you get Sand or Oakwood instead of "beeswax". The beeswax ones do not age well, and they are kind of boring.
Doc Martens I am a huge fan of this model in particular
Finally, I would recommend a black jacket to start you off with. What you get is up to you. It could be a bomber, a trucker, a varsity, a parka, an m-65, or whatever. An olive jacket would also be good, though maybe not as cool.
Other than that, it's hard to give you recommendations without knowing what you like.
Don't cut your hair.
(also, your face reminds me a little bit of The Arm, if he was less menacing.)
I'm looking for a watch with a few specific characteristics, and don't really know where to look. I usually buy the cheapest casio watch I can find at walmart and they work just fine, but there are a few features I'm looking for and I'd rather just get something that fits the bill, so, in order of importance:
Comfort: most of these watches seem to have rubber/silicone bands which I find very uncomfortable and stiflingly hot. I'll also mention I have very, very thin wrists. I've found metal and leather bands more comfortable, and have never tried cloth.
Features: I need a good light, and I brew gongfu tea often and need to time brews, so accurate, big and easy to see second counting is helpful, but not like, dire.
As far as calendars go, if I can get the date and day of the week, I'm happy. Not expecting any fancy calendrical complications in my price range, which brings me to:
Looking for something under or about $100. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-AE1200WHD-1A-Stainless-Steel-Digital/dp/B0094B79CI I was considering this one, but it seems like it has some complications I just don't need. I prefer analog, but this doesn't matter too much. I like minimalist styling but also like when things have a very distinctive style or features (the world map above being an example).
I get that this is ridiculously general, but anything helps.
Edit: as far as styling goes, just saw this post https://old.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/9mfe4w/junghans_an_unexpected_gift/ and I love this very bare, old-pocket-watch looking face
My favorite Citizen is the Nighthawk. It's got the same slide-rule system that this one has (which lets you do unit conversions, calculate fuel mileage, arrival time, and also all kinds of arithmetic by rotating the crown on the left, which rotates the outer bezel inside of the crystal) , but ditches the Chronograph function in place of a really cool and intuitive dual time zone/GMT hand. In addition, it's a bit more water resistant and suitable for just about anything short of saturation diving. It's also a really nice, timelessly-styled piece that's probably always going to look cool.

I own several Citizens and they are without question great watches. Think of them and Seiko as the Honda and Toyota of timepieces; while they lack the cachet of European brands (TAG Heuer, Rolex, etc), they make up for it with extreme reliability and build quality. Their highest end pieces have legitimately comparable build quality and features to those brands for thousands less.

As far as Citizen Eco-Drives go (as opposed to mechanical self-winding watches, which are more expensive and ironically less accurate), they generally are bulletproof and maintenence free, with a lithium-ion battery that does not require service for 20+ years in most cases. They tell time with excellent accuracy (I have one that only deviates a few seconds every three or four months) and are about the easiest watch to own, as they charge themselves without any special action required.

If you're really curious about watches, feel free to join the /r/watches subreddit. Very active, friendly community.
I'd always recommend buying a solid automatic watch. Watches like MK, DW, fossil, etc, are cheaply made with Chinese parts and usually run on quartz and are meant to be replaced when they start to break down. Investing in an automatic can really ensure you have a great watch that will last.
Like mentioned, the skx007 is a great watch and will last you a lifetime. You can also mod this watch quite easily as well and the movement will last forever. Many watch enthusiasts love Seiko, myself included (have 3 will probably get more). Seiko 5's are also solid entry-level watches and many come in around the $100 mark depending on model: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK789-Automatic-Stainless-Steel/dp/B0018N0HL0/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=seiko+5&qid=1565104496&s=gateway&sr=8-4
The Orient Bambino is also a great entry-level automatic dress watch with a few different dial combos: https://www.amazon.com/Orient-Bambino-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless/dp/B01N45HWRM
For a cheaper diver, the Orient Ray/Mako lines are good as well: https://www.amazon.com/Orient-FAA02004B9-Display-Japanese-Automatic/dp/B01AK5TQXG/ref=sr_1_2?crid=K6K5EI9K3HA7&keywords=orient+mako+2&qid=1565104421&s=gateway&sprefix=orient+mako%2Caps%2C187&sr=8-2
If you can spend more you can look at Hamilton's Khaki line or Jazzmaster, Seiko Sumo or Seiko Sarb033, Sinn Watches, Chris Ward, Squale, Junker's Bauhaus or Max bill if you like the Daniel Wellington Style.
You can even look at used/vintage and get a nice Omega Seamaster for ~$500
What watches does he have? What type of watch do you want - sport, dress, dive, aviator? Where is he going to wear it? How much can you spend?
This is a very cool thing you're doing - happy birthday to you and your brother.
I'm a bit of a watch nut and generally go for automatic watches, so that's what I'll stick to here....unfortunately none of them are as trendy as the larger Hugo you've mentioned. I'm not as familiar with the trendier stuff...but I can offer some input.
In that price range, I normally recommend Seiko. Their dive watches are pretty solid (http://amzn.to/1wX9UCd) and right in your range, but if you're looking for something a bit dressier the SARB line has some great pieces....although a bit higher than you mentioned - http://amzn.to/1tteaIk. The Seiko movement isn't as well known as the Swiss movements, but it's great all the same. For the money, they're hard to beat.
Going a bit cheaper, you can look at the Chinese made watches. Sea-Gull has some good looking ones. I've actually had one for a bit, but the quality wasn't the same and I ended up letting it go. The materials aren't as solid and the fit and finish isn't the same as Swiss or a Seiko. At the same time, you get a whole lot more shoved in the watch for quite at a much lower price point. For instance - a Chinese-made Sea-gull tourbillon starts at $4000ish, while a Swiss-made one will start at....$35000. That said - this is an attractive sea-gull: http://bit.ly/1wUHdab; and here is a dressier one: http://bit.ly/1yOyFks
Another option is to go vintage. You can get some cool watches at great prices - Omega, Jaeger Le-Coultre, Girard-Perregeaux. While I generally wouldn't recommend eBay due to the amount of fraud you'll find, here's a good looking Seamaster currently for sale - http://ebay.to/1zqa1tC. A more reliable source for used watches is http://www.watchrecon.com/. It's an aggregate of several watch fora and you can see what's currently for sale.
Best of luck in your search.
Get some Iron Rangers factory seconds. They go on sale from time to time down to $160. Great, great boot. I got some of the Red Wing insoles for around $25 that made a world of a difference as far as heat is concerned. Size .5-1 size down. If you have wide feet, don't size down to .5 size down, depending on your foot size.
You also have the Chippewa Service Boot. I got my brother some for Christmas and they are actually really nice. The "Cordovan" option looks lovely and is a lot more versatile than one might think as it's a more burgundy color. But it really works in occasions where you would wear this sort of thing.
The Thorogoods Moc Toe is a great boot as well for a different look. These can't be dressed up as easily IMO, but good boots the same. Red Wing has a similar boot if you'd prefer the look of it. It's also a good boot.
For all of these, get some nice wool socks. Darn Tough makes some good ones but I don't like the looks. Anonymousism also makes some good stuff provided you like the colors, but IMO are a bit overpriced. My favorite wool socks came from J. Crew last season. They are thick, warm, look good, and were reasonable priced.
If you have any other questions, let me know!
It's a bit harder to get diagnose fit and for some people to get the best possible fit in a moulded bra, but if you're not at all open to wearing a non-moulded bra, that's totally your choice. Your measurements put you between band sizes as well as between cup sizes, so you're likely to wear a 32 band in some bras and a 34 in others (in addition to being between cup sizes).
I'm putting only amazon links in here for ease of shipping/returns. Everything I've linked is available on Prime, but it might default to another seller if the size you choose is out of stock or they have a lower price so just pay attention when you're adding stuff to your cart as other sellers will have their own return policies.
For absolute basic, 'everyday' bras, your best choice to start would probably be Freya Deco. This bra runs bigger in the band, so you'll probably do fine in a 32 band here.
Personally I prefer the fit of the Parfait Jeanie to the Deco, I find the cups/straps are a little closer together so it's much more comfortable for me. (Also it's $20 cheaper, though, I'd still pay the extra money for something that fit better).
Strapless bras are fairly difficult to come by in larger sizes, the Deco Strapless is what I would consider the most useful one, it also comes in a longline version which may be more supportive if you don't find this sufficient. It is tighter in the band than the regular Deco, so you may take a 34 in this.
Panache Sport is probably the most consistently recommended bra on this sub, it comes in underwired and non-wired versions. It's not moulded, the cups are seamed and made of flexible foam. The underwires in the wired version are padded, so it's pretty comfy. You'll probably take a larger band in this based on the fact that you're lifting and doing yoga, and not running.
However, since the Panache sport is an encapsulation bra, it's really not my first choice for yoga. I prefer this Shock Absorber which is a strong compression bra, to just flatten my boobs as much as possible to get them as much out of the way as they can get. This runs tight in the band, so I might suggest trying a 36 band. The sizing is kind of weird on this as well, the boob section never gets any wider, it just gets taller (I own this in a FF and H cup in the same band size), so if you try it and think it doesn't provide enough coverage and is showing too much very squished cleavage, just size up even if it's a cup size much larger than you would normally wear.
$250 is a bit of a tight budget for the number of bras you want, but really not impossible once you've narrowed down your size. Even based on Amazon-pricing, if you like the Parfait Jeanie, you can get 3 of those, the Deco Strapless, and a sports bra for $260.....but you can also get 3 Decos, the Deco Strapless, and a Panache Sport from here for £161 which converts to $213USD. You can also often find new with tags bras on ebay from UK sellers that are selling off previous seasons' printed or fashion colour bras.
>a good first everyday watch that would be fine in situations such as interviews
Formal and semi-formal situations? I'd go with a simple dress watch.
For budget and great looking, consider a Timex Easy Reader, $30, it's a white dial watch with leather strap, great for what you're going for.
What's your budget? Around the hundreds, I'd go with an Orient Bambino, it goes for around $120-$150. It's very classic, minimalist, has a dome crystal, and is not very distracting. It's an automatic too. There's 4 versions of the Bambino. I personally like version 1, and version 2 with blue hands.
A little higher, Timex has been doing some great reissues. The Timex Marlin, $200, is pretty understated but eye catching. It's a manual wind movement watch with a call back design. This will probably be my next watch.
Lastly, Tissot has some great automatic's. The Tissot Visodate, $400, is a fantastic watch for the price.
All these watches can be had for much cheaper if you're open to looking at the gray market (watch exchange forums, ebay, etc.). I hope this helps, at the very least to show what's out there. Cheers and best wishes!
Invicta pro diver - ~$85. has a Seiko automatic movement and a huge aftermarket following
Parnis sub Homage - $112. decent all around watch...nothing fancy, but has a Miyota movement which is reliable
Tisell Marine Diver- ~$220. r/watches favorite. uses high beat Miyota movement
Phoibos Great White - IIRC can be found for about $200 or slightly under on Ebay. same movement as the Tissell. seems to be a newcomer to the homage game. nice offering from everything I've seen.
Steinhart Ocean one - $500 - higher end, swiss made, ETA movement. great watch from what I've seen.
all are pretty good bangs for your buck. the Cyclops kinda goes hand in hand with the "Looks like a Submariner" aesthetic. it's going to be hard to find something that doesn't look VERY similar to this watch.
Hi! I’m back!!
Although I thoroughly intend to write my birth story when I’m ready, I just finished my first piece since the baby arrived so in celebration, I’ll pair it with something useful.
I really appreciated posts like this while I was pregnant so here goes:
Things I didn’t know I needed:
(AKA things I have frantically ordered on amazon at or around 2am)
•Bottle Drying Rack This probably seems obvious, but when we didn’t get this from our showers we were like... idk why we can’t just use a towel??
•Safe way to cosleep My husband built a BEAUTIFUL Sidecar Crib, but it was attached on my side of the bed and it took 2.5 weeks for me to have healed enough to climb in bed around it safely with the baby. This way, I didn’t have to bend over to pick up baby or even spit up to check on/soothe him.
•Lactation Suppliment My lactation consultant approved. This one worked well in my breakfast tea.
•Better flanges My poor nipples were so sore and the flames that come with the Medela... well I’m not sure who they’re supposed to fit but not me. My doula practically ordered these for me. GAME CHANGER.
•Pumping bra I was cutting holes in sports bras. This is better.
•Nipple Shells Another kind reddittor sent me in the direction of this AMAZING INVENTION after I posted a photo of ice packs tied to my nipples with a burp cloth because I refused to wear a shirt my nipples hurt so bad. I will be purchasing these for EVERY PREGNANT WOMAN FOREVER. They keep your nipples dry, collect drips, apply counter pressure to keep your nipples shaped correctly for latching, and most importantly omg nothing touches the precious nips and you can wear a shirt!!
•Car mirror
Me: that seems extra, he’s in a car seat and safe why would I need a mirror??
Hormones; HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH YOU FOOL
•Car adapter for my breast pump Cheaper than batteries
•Shade for his side of the car because anything that wakes up my sleeping baby is the devil. This one has a bonus that allowed me to roll the window down and it was HOT in the south
•Better suction for the breast pump Again- just better than whatever they send you
•My Breast Friend we got the boppy but this one saved my back
•Heating pad Turns out I’ll do ANYTHING to keep the baby asleep when I transfer him to his crib including preheat the darn thing (on low!) before I lay home down
•Stroller Caddy You’ll want somewhere to put your keys, phone, and coffee
•Baby K’tan An easier way for my husband to wear the baby.
•Leggings I had a pair of these before, and they are SO COMFORTABLE on my postpartum body that I bought 5 more in different colors!
•Extra pump parts for whichever pump you have
•A hands-up swaddle I found at Target
•Wine.
Anyway, hope this helps! Best of luck to all of you!
I'll earn some contempt from other MFAers for this, but I'm excited that you are eager to be a more sartorial Man's Man instead of the twinks, ironic nerd, preppies, and drop-crotch streetwear I keep seeing here. I appreciate their styles, but I want to see more blue collar style.
Footwear: Invest in some good boots Timberlands / Redwings / Thorogood
Pants: You want a slimmer chino, but you need to be able to move in them, so not too slim. Alphas / Land's End / Gap
I wouldn't bother too much with Denim, a single pair of slim fitting dark wash jeans if any for the time being. Quality denim is going to be out of your price range right now. Just don't get any that are pre-distressed.
Shirts: Fit will be an issue here. Your natural build is going have narrower shoulders than men of your height. Since we base successful fit on shoulders above anything else, you might be left with very tight fit throughout the chest and waist. Trial and error will be the only way to go about this, but I'd say avoid slim fit here. I could have this completely backwards though.
No Graphic T's /Henleys / Chambray is nice here in FL / Any patterned button downs (stay away from pearl snaps- we're trying to avoid flair)
Outdoor jacket: Timberland Waterproof!
Avoid
*Jewelry - unless it has sentimental value, rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are not what you are looking for
Haircut note: I'd recommend cutting the sides and back much much shorter, and you can leave whatever length on top. Right now it looks very youthful and wild instead of professional.
So this is my first ever automatic, I picked it up at Indiegogo actually, and was a little hesitant at first about spending money north of $100 on an unknown brand, but after doing some research on the movement, I went ahead and pulled the trigger!
I'm actually pretty glad I did. I don't own any automatics, and my only other real watch is a hand-me-down PRC 200 from back when Michael Owen was still relevant (I love it to bits, but it needs a good servicing really), so this was a really exciting buy for me.
It's a 26000 bph movement iirc, so the sweep isn't Rolex-esque but it's infinitely nicer than my jumpy quartz, so i'm still ecstatic about the change.
This thing's really caused me to get bit by the automatic bug though, so much so that i've already lined up my next purchase (The SNZG15).
-----------------
Tl;dr Excitable student buys first automatic watch from unknown French brand on Indiegogo, he lives happily ever after.
DW is a very "cheap" brand. It markets more than it prioritizes its quality. Simple quartz watch that boomed off of instagram and youtube promotions. Now, if you go through my posts about 3 months back. I asked the same thing, i ended up buying one, i ended up returning it. I picked up this Bulova http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Stainless-Steel-Leather/dp/B000WUKJ0O
Bulova is a part of Citizen which is a very very reputable everyday watch brand. My first ever watch was a citizen eco drive that was all black leather straps and i loved it very very much. I would say look for brands that are very reputable and stay off marketing too much. Best everyday bang for your bucks - TIMEX (!) ( super casual not too businessy, and im a business person. i still have a weekender regardless, its awesome.) Bulova/Citizen (perfer citizen but bulova makes great dress watches for cheap and have good quality. Im SUPER pleased with mine and my two favorite watches are both my everyday citizen and dressy bulova).
Other recommended watches from me to you
EDIT: how could i forget Seiko as another recommendation. Great bang for the buck metal linked dress watch if youre in a everyday business setting. switch from metal link watches to leather bands and bam. eyes on wrist everyday as you walk in the office!

Hello everyone, I'm selling a ~10 months old in my hands but literally a brand new G-Shock in Pink and Gray dial. I bought this from Macy's during one of the sale with intent on gifting on my cousin's birthday but she ended up asking for a Fitbit, sooo.. after hanging out in my hands for a long time never been worn once, I'm selling this as part of purge to my collection.
I am throwing in another brand new Casio classic as a gift!! It also has never been worn once, just impulse purchase off Amazon a long time ago. To be clear whether or not you'd accept this gift will have no affect on the price. I do care about this watch and would really prefer it one goes to someone who would also appreciate it and give it some wrist time instead of hanging out inside my watch case.
I accept PayPal and ship within US. I have sold a ton of watches here on /r/watchexchange from Sinn, Longines, and Omega to Seiko and Orient with 100% of buyers satisfied. References and all the good stuff available upon request. Thanks for your interest!

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, you need to decide what you are looking for in a bit more detail. Is it a particular look or style? Is it an automatic or quartz movement? There are a lot of options even once you get these two aspects narrowed down. You can always buy the watch and strap separate as well, to get the combination you are looking for.
I personally have a Citizen Nighthawk on a black Hirsch Liberty strap and a Citizen Eco-Drive with blue hands on a brown Hirsch Liberty strap. These are very likely much cheaper than you are looking for as a grad gift, given the $700 limit listed, but the Citizen Skyhawk is closer to your limit and is really nice too.
When it comes to automatic movements, it will be quite easy to get to the $700 limit. Hamilton is a favorite, with both the Khaki Field and the Jazzmaster being good possibilities.
My only advice is to stay away from "fashion" brand watches. A little reading in /r/watches, particularly the buying guide and sidebar, should help you a lot.
Good luck!
Hey. It's my 25th birthday and my brother wanted to get me a nice watch around the 500 cad budget. I wanted some opinions.
Some that I considered:
I know it's a designer brand but I really really like the design of it!
Kenneth Cole kc3981:

Seiko sarb033:

But I also loooove the NTH nacken in blue with it's ceramic glossy bezel and embedded lume and snowflake hands (I just wish the indeces were like outlined in silver or something, would have been a dream) - but that watch is on preorder right now.
(Link for the curious:
https://watchgauge.com/products/copy-of-nth-nacken-modern-blue-no-date-pre-order-v2)
Also the tissel marine diver in black is really really nice too, but that's also a hard one to order and receive quickly.
So, these are watches that I considered plus some that I like, I'd appreciate any opinions or advice :) also I don't mind homage watches (clearly), so yea.
And I already own an orient Bambino v4 (in grey and gold that's wonderful).
Thanks!!!
Hamilton's khaki line is tough to beat in terms of fit and finish for the price, but some other options are:
I personally think the Khaki is the best all-around value/best looking, but you may fancy another one more so. Either way, take your time and find something you love. Hope you find what you're lookin for!
Have both, they have different appeals.
For example, I like my Eco Drive as a very clean thin dress watch on a bracelet. The Chris Ward equivalent would be a Malvern Slimline, which is $350 but automatic and thicker at 9mm instead of 5mm.
Other simple comparisons - for a generic dress watch the $175 C5 Malvern (quartz), $350 C5 Malvern (Auto), and $140 Citizen Eco Drive. Chris Ward will come with sapphire crystal, better presentation/warranty, a much better bracelet/strap, but a 20% higher price tag. Also the automatics have a transparent back to see the pretty movement.
For sport watches you have the famous $230 Citizen Nighthawk, the $220 Citizen Speedy Style, the $250 C7 Rapide (goes on sale ~$275), and the ~$250 C8 Flyer Quartz (goes on sale~$275). Once again, CW comes with sapphire quartz, 5 year warranty, and better bracelet/strap. But you also have to wait for one to go on one of these clearance sales for the good prices.
Divers, $250 C60 Trident vs $200 Citizen Promaster. Trident looks more traditional, following the Omega Seamaster design, comes in 38mm and 42mm, sapphire crystal, and can come with a nice bracelet for ~$50 more. For reference, a new bracelet for the Citizen will be upwards of $100.
Both brands have their own unique watches, with Citizen having more very different designs. Instead, Chris Ward has a few core designs where you select a different movement (auto vs quartz), face color, leather strap or bracelet, and size (generally have something like 38mm vs 42mm or 40mm vs 43mm). Chris Ward designs tend to be cleaner, but there are fewer.
Of course it comes down to preference. Chris Ward will be a bit more expensive, but higher quality (sapphire vs mineral, Swiss movements vs Japanese, etc). Citizen will give you more unique options to pick from in terms of design.
If someone wants a traditional watch (Diver, speedy style, clean dress watch) I first point them towards CW if they're willing to spend $150-$350. If they're looking for a Pilot then the Maratac Mid Pilot ($250 sale price), CW when on sale, or Laco if they want some pseudo history. However under $150, first instincts are Citizen and Seiko. Obviously this is just the initial recommendation, and any variety of preferences can change the follow up.
Seiko SARB017 Alpinist
Price: $375-$400
Movement: 6R15 automatic, hand-winding, hacking
Style: Casual/outdoors
Size: 38mm
Link: Amazon Seiya
Similar models: SARB013 in cream and SARB015 in black.
Description: Another great Seiko in this price range, and a sub favourite. The green sunburst dial with gold markings is just stunning. The inner rotating compass bezel is more stylish than useful but, like the cathedral hands, just fits with the coherent overall theme - it's not called the Alpinist for nothing. 50 hour power reserve, great lume, 200m WR, sapphire crystal, and all the build quality and accuracy you expect from Seiko in this price range. Looks good on a bracelet but, to my mind, best on a brown leather strap. The latest in a line with a strong history as well - there are some really nice vintage Alpinist models out there.
I think that the BEST value at the entry level for watches is the Seiko SKX Diver and an aftermarket Super Oyster Bracelet.
It will cost closer to $300 all in, but you're getting a more durable, water resistant, and much cooler watch.
I like the Seiko Alpinist better on leather, but it will cost a little more and you will need to replace the leather straps pretty quickly if you are wearing it everyday.
I have a JLC Grande Date and a Breitling Navitimer on leather. They are some of the best leather straps available, but they still wear out fast. I know you say you want a leather strap, but I'd strongly recommend a steel bracelet like the one I linked if you want something nice that will last.
I don't know what the price is supposed to be, as it says 9999.99 right now, but that looks a lot like a Hamilton Khaki Field to me, but a bit more simplified.
The Hamiltons have a little more going on on the dial usually, but you can get a Khaki Field brand new for well under 500 USD. The dial isn't as simple on the Hamiltons as what you posted, but they're similar in design, have decent automatic movements, and are pretty decent mid-level watches IMO.
If you'd be okay with something with a date window...
Khaki Field
Day / Date
Khaki King
Aviation / Pilot (with day/date) Khaki Aviation
Not quite what you're looking for, but a much cheaper option with a similar style would be the Seiko 5 SNK809, which can be had for around $60 brand new.
Seiko 5 SNK809
I just bought a Seiko 5 Sports SNZF17K1, a step or two up from the SNK809 in Seiko 5's and I love it so far. But it doesn't look anything like what you want...
Seiko's 5 and 5 sport series are great, fairly inexpensive, automatic watches.
I've seen some reallllllly cool Soviet and Russian watches that are really simple like what you want, but I honestly don't know what to tell you to look for as far as those go.
Hey there! Definitely not an expert here (I'm sure one of them will check in) but I used to have the same problems. Sports bras are the worst with a pendulous shape- I felt like I was always trying to escape out the bottom of a too-big band! I was jealous of my friends who could just buy a cheap one off the rack in some store labeled in "S, M, L" sizing and make it work. That was definitely not going to happen for me. Looking back, I think most of them had firmer tissue and were self-supporting, so they had a completely different shape than I did.
You'll definitely want to measure yourself according to the sidebar guidelines so that you have a better size to start with. Then, there are lots of sports bras that have adjustable bands and straps, and even different types of hold.
My favorite turned out to be the Panache Sports Bra (I like both the wired and non-wired for different activities). I get incredible lift and support, and absolutely no movement. It's on the expensive side, but I've never been more comfortable in a sports bra and I don't dread working out anymore. Plus, Amazon has lots of sales, so I've rarely paid full price. If it works with your measurements, I recommend trying it! If not, there's lots of other styles to try, and this sub was very helpful in making a few recommendations for me when I was looking. Hopefully you find something that works for you!
I used to buy a lot more stuff, but lately I've been trying to slim down to just a few, high-quality items. Of the things I own, here's a few that I really love:
Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?
If the
formerlatter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound). In fact, fuck it, here's a list of shit I dug up. I love internet-window-shopping:
Young-looking Seiko automatic diver
Hamilton Khaki
Another (larger) Hamilton Khaki
Khaki Pilot (very diver/aviator-esque look)
A Tissot auto chrono
A fairly dressy Hamilton
A nice and clean sporty Tissot
A rather large but eye-catching Hamilton
Yes, I know I went kinda overboard on the Hamiltons, but I was working off the impression your watch example and fondness for divers gave me.
EDIT: got my former/latter mixed up. I blame Mr. Walker's magnificent amber restorative.
I agree with LawsListens on this, and we have very similar opinions. I think this is a case where you need to determine what makes it seem cheap to you. For some it is the seemingly random colors on many of the plastic models.
My favorite cheap black model is the Casio F105, but they got it down to blue and grey on black. I think putting these on a nato strap makes them look really sharp, and much less cheap. If you want a silver case look at the Casio A158, or the Royale ( AE1200 ). I have the F105 ( and a couple G-Shocks, but these are way too thick based on what you said ).
There are some nice "Ana-Digi" models that have a small LCD display on an analog watch, and might give you some of what you want, like this AW49, or this AW80. I have never bought any of this, but they seem like a good middle ground.
If you want something a bit more "office acceptable", you probably need to go pure analog, but you are going to give up a number of cool functions that you may use from your digital. If you want something that is inexpensive and tough Casio Duro MDV106, it is a 200m diver, with a stainless steel case, and a screw down crown. These can usually be found for $45-60, but it has some size to it at 44mm. Probably my favorite, under the radar pick is the SNK80x, personally I like the SNK807 ( navy blue ) or the 803 ( beige ), but they are all the same great watch, and usually under $70. I own both of these.
Everyone on this subreddit recommends to steer clear of fashion watches, but I like to recommend that you get a watch that YOU WILL ENJOY AND LIKE. You will ultimately be the one who will be wearing it anyways, so why not get that Mickey Mouse watch you been eyeing?
But as a fan of horology, I'd recommend these watches that have similar designs to what you linked above.

Not exactly sure where to find a panda styled chronograph with time indicators at the 12 and 6 area, but here is one from Seagull. I'm personally not a fan of the Seagull brand. Mechanical movement
Little more than 300, but it's a fan favorite among this community. It also comes with an automatic movement
This Seiko 5 - SNZG15 is my first automatic watch. I’ve owned this watch for 2 weeks now but I didn’t want to post it here until I received the dark brown leather NATO I ordered for it. I think it compliments the watch nicely and gives it a more sophisticated look from the cheap strap it comes with. I was torn between this watch and the Seiko SNK809 but after looking it over I chose the SNZG15 because its larger in diameter (42mm vs. 37mm) as well as it is waterproof up to 330ft (100m). If anyone else owns this watch I’d love to see what straps you recommend for it. Thanks!
FYI on Amazon it states that the band width is 20.6mm. This is false. Order a 22mm

Hey guys,

So i'm really wanting to treat myself because I just graduated from an unpaid internship to a job and I realized the best way to do that is to buy myself a watch :)

So i'm really interested in the Tissot more than the Alpinist, but I used to be infactuated with the Alpinist a few months ago. However I just discovered this one and I absolutely love the Seastar. I can't tell if im just hyped about it, but really what was going with the Seiko was the fact that it's discontinued and it's a good "investment", or at least will keep some type of value. The Tissot is a swiss brand that has lots of class, and seikos seem to be a little too popular, but obviously for good reason.
Any thoughts on this hard decision??

Tissot : https://www.amazon.com/Tissot-Seastar-Automatic-Chronometer-T120-407-11-041-00/dp/B07D2B9DRV/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1538185145&sr=8-2&keywords=tissot+seastar

Seiko : https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000KG93BQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538185257&sr=8-1&keywords=Sarb017
(really don't like the seikos band, makes it a lot more casual than id like it to be)

The Panache underwired sports bra: http://www.amazon.com/Panache-Womens-Underwired-Sports-Bra/dp/B005X5FG2O
I am a 30JJ and love Love LOVE this sports bra. The band is nice and firm, and the wires are very well padded and don't hurt or dig. I also love that it has a hook to convert the bra from normal to racerback straps (I find I need the extra holding power of converting to racerback after a while on a run!)
Have fun getting back into the gym! I'm just getting back into after the holidays too and it feels great to be sore (good sore!) after a workout!
There are several!
The Christopher Ward C60 Trident 300. It's the quartz version of what I personally feel is one of the best Diver watches on the market.
Casio MDV-106. Another quartz diver, and also pretty inexpensive!
Actually basically any Casio watch. The F91W, the A158W, CA-53W, any of the Edifices, etc.
There are also a tonne of quartz Seikos out there. I can't think of many of the top of my head, but like all Seikos, they're great quality for a decent price.
If we can bend the rules to include Solar watches, that opens up to both more Casios, as well as Citizen's lineup of watches. My personally favourite is the Nighthawk (A pretty cliche choice, I know), but they have watches in so many styles, include dressier ones. Another Neat one is the Altichron which has a manual compass and altitude display.
That's also not including more high end Quartz watches, such as the Seamaster 2541 that Pierce Brosnan wore as James Bond in Goldeneye (I know that piece is no longer available on Omega's website, but it's easy enough to find secondhand).
So basically, I think I'd be okay lol
You need to be realistic. Outside catching a deal on eBay, you are not going to find boots in your size for less than $100. Your best bets in that range are Thorogoods (Plain toe, Moc toe, Chuka boot, and Lace-to-toe) and Chippewa (Apache GQ - brown or tan, lugged or smooth sole) on Amazon.com
Chippewas go up to size 14EE. Thorogoods go up to size 14EEEE in some styles but mostly just to 14EE. You may not need to go all the way up to size 14 or all the way up to EEEE though. Boots typically run one full size larger than you sneaker size so you may be looking for size 13E or 13EE.
My advice is to buy from Amazon.com Their prices are already low as hell, and on top of that you get free returns (which is hugely important when selecting shoes) and they are running a permanent 20% off shoes coupon.
If you Google for "Amazon shoe email" and sign up for the email you will receive a 20% off coupon good for shoes. After you sign up for this email list and receive your coupon the next step is waiting for your size to restock on Amazon. Perhaps setting a camelcamelcamel alert for your size and a high price will help alert you when they are restocked. Size E-EEEE seem to go quick when they restock, so having this alert will help.
Here is my advice: I know you only want to spend $100, but that is unrealistic. You should do what it takes to make your budget flexible up to $120 total. This opens you up to the Thorogoods and Chippewas I mentioned above. Next, go checkout these: http://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-Apache-Lace-Up-Boot/dp/B004TK2RPS and these: http://www.amazon.com/Thorogood-American-Heritage-Plain-Toe-Boot/dp/B002QQ8XB4/ref=pd_sbs_shoe_3 They are both available today in size 14EE. Order them using the 20% off coupon. You don't have to keep one or both, but this will allow you to see if size 14EE is the right size in each company's boots. If you like a pair keep them, and send the other one back. Notice the large lugged sole on the Chippewas. This will not be as versatile and will be much more casual/work-y than the smooth soled Chippewa, but those are not in stock right now in size 14EE for you to have shipped and try on. Once you have your size down you can make a better decision exactly what shoe you want and you can wait for it to come in stock and at a price you like.
My experience with sports bras and gymnastics (which has it's own 360 concerns) has led me to search for the elusive racerback encapsulation DD+ bra. Racerbacks are only style I get support, good distribution of pressure and full range of motion in, while encapsulation personally feels much more comfortable then compression. Both the Panache Sport and Freya Active (which are very popular, so give them a try too) have j-hooks which are completely inadequate and a bit flimsy.
I've temporarily settled on the Bendon Extreme Sport. It's a cup size small for me (only goes up to a G, alas!), but the best fit I've found: great top and side support, convertible straps for a true racerback and really strange wires (they have a sort of swoosh shape when worn) that somehow work. Worth a spot on your list for sure.
With my amazing ability to estimate quid to dollars I'll try to help you, friend! A beautiful pair of work boots I often suggest are Eastland moc toes.
http://www.eastlandshoe.com/product/mens+lumber+up+boot.do?sortby=ourPicks&carousel=true
They should keep your feet dry and they are simply stunning casual boots for extremely cheap and they will last much longer than a year I believe.
A more pricey option is Thorogood who are pretty great Red Wing impostors that last a long time!
http://www.amazon.com/Thorogood-814-4200-Moc-Toe-Boot/dp/B002QQ8XRI
Here's there moc toes in 6". There's a %20 off code for all thorogood boots on Amazon I believe BOOTUP14 that might still be working and those aren't very expensive at all if you'd even look to spend £150 on boots.
For about 150 pounds Red Wing sells beautiful moc toes. Red Wings Mocs can look really stellar in every look.

Tell me what kinda look you're looking for and maybe I can be more specific.
For something that is on the dressier side but still can be worn casually I have these choices (links from amazon for reference)
This is in black https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Casual/dp/B001AE9XRQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1542165206&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sarb&dpPl=1&dpID=41KkNyg6A%2BL&ref=plSrch
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Presage-Jewel-Automatic-Watch/dp/B074KL4SP6/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1542165206&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sarb
My recommendation is to stay away from divers, pilot and chronographs if he wants to wear them on classier occasions. Of course a lot of people love to break the rule, which is totally fine.
But these watches can be worn to work (aren't too flashy, seiko is mostly known to watch enthusiasts anyway), have lot of color choices amd can be worn on classier occasions.
The SNE057 looks pretty damn close, but that it's solar and the stock bracelet is different. That lug shape is pretty unique and rules out most of the 5 series, I believe. It's such a nice touch though. It reminds me of the lugs on the Omega Aqua Terra. I'll keep looking and edit this post if I find anything.
edit: Here's an SNE057 with a blue face that has the right bracelet but square chapter ring markings rather than triangle.
edit 2: SNE039 is a lot closer. Black dial and correct bracelet and chapter ring markings are on the money, but the "solar" marking at 6 o'clock is still not matching.
edit 3: That's all I've got. Perhaps someone here can tell you the non-solar equivalent to the SNE039. Best of luck.
EDIT 4: Success!!! The Seiko SGF719
For the money, I'd go with the solar version though...
Edit 5: Hopefully the last - The SGGA49 looks identical to the SGF719, but cheaper, for some reason.
Sure thing! There is a brand called Hamilton that has some comparable models at a higher quality. They're an American country over 100 years old, and they're well known for making great watches. Here are some options that are similar to some Timex styles:
The company "Junkers" also makes excellent quality timepieces. "Junkers" is the brand name, they aren't junk watches haha. They're in the $300-$400 range usually, here are some good options. Long Island Watch is a great retailer for picking up good watches.
And also some more options from Graf Zeppelin, another quality watch maker:
Good luck in your search! Feel free to PM.
No worries, we're all learning. An under $100 mechanical mostly points to one of the Seiko 5 models. There are so many it's hard to list them all. The SNK80X are the most popular, but not exactly minimalist. Something like the SNK789 might be more along your line, but you can pick any of the Seiko 5's and it will be fine.
Tiny bit above budget, the Citizen NH8350 also comes in black and a much sought after blue sunburst. Nice mechanicals for a great price.
If you want a true Bauhaus minimalist watch under $100 though your best bet is quartz (you could even build a nice small quartz collection for under $100):
-Timex Fairfield
-Bulova 96B104
-Citizen BI5000-01A
Oof, yeah Grand Seikos are exquisite watches with ridiculous hand-finishing. What do you think of these options?
Similar to the GS on /r/watches, a Seiko SARB035
Another watch that has a similar style, Seiko SARY055
A classic choice for a first automatic watch, Hamilton Khaki Field
I just think this one is cool. Spinnaker Bradner SP-5057-02
Always happy to help someone who's interested in getting a nice watch! If you'd like more help, let me know which style you like most and I can look around some more. Otherwise, good luck!
First suggestion:
Doesn't check all of your boxes but hear me out when I say I would get a Seiko SARB033. In my opinion, the SARB has a quality worth every penny and is a fan favorite that will look amazing for your wedding and there on.
Second suggestion:
More to your requests is orient. Orient has a lot of open heart watches under 300 dollars but I just happened to like this one and if im not mistaken, most of their movements are in-house.
Hope this helps
Hey man, Hamilton is a pretty well respected brand around here, and their Jazzmaster series are all very decent watches with good movements. In fact, they may be a bit more expensive due to the value of their brand!
Have you also considered a Tissot Visodate? They seem to be very popular with the r/watches crowd as of late. Very similar style and similar size as well.
For a smaller wrist, have you considered something slightly smaller at 38mm? The Tissot PR100 automatic might be a good place to start. Food for thought.
Tissot and Hamilton are both owned by the Swatch group, which also owns higher end brands such as Omega.
Good luck on your hunt - remember at the end of the day it's really your decision, and as long as you find something that you are comfortable with, you're golden.
The new Tissot Heritage series Visodates would fit the bill nicely. Bulova makes a similar, simple design.
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Leather-Dress-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O
Citizen has some Eco-Drives that are nice and simple.
Hamilton Jazzmaster is a very popular and highly regarded watch around these parts. That would be an excellent choice, although most are a bit larger than you're looking for.
I sell a lot of vintage pieces and have plenty that would fit the bill well within your price range if you're into vintage watches. Great option for a smaller wrist as vintage pieces tend to be much smaller than today's huge watches.
If you're interested in seeing what I have, feel free to PM me.
I have an automatic Stuhrling that i just wear occasionally as a beater that I'd sell you for pretty cheap, if you were interested. PM me if you wanted some pictures and details.
Seiko 5 circlejerking aside, that's probably your most popular option buying new. That said, I'm personally not a fan of the <$100 SNK models. The 37mm case fits well on a lot of people but looks like a toy on my wrist, and just not a fan of the overall design.
Some other suggestions around $100 if you were buying new:
You can go beyond your budget for a little bit and check out the Tissot Visodate. It's the first thing that came to mind when I read your post. Available both in Black and White, double sapphire crystal, automatic Swiss movement, can't be wrong!
The Orient Bambino might also fit your description, and it seems to be gaining lots popularity lately. It also comes in a very comfortable price. It's Automatic and available both in black and white, though it does not have Sapphire. Personally I'm in love with the black, also looks terrific with a Honey Calf strap. It's in the style of mid 20th century dress watches though said to be larger than the average size of these, so take a good look at the sizes.
Also, congrats on your graduation and good luck!
Okay I'll do my best to help you even though I don't know as much about digital watches as I do mechanicals. My first suggestion would be the Casio F-91W because who cares what others think; if you like the watch keep wearing it! All jokes aside here's another Casio A-158WA-1. I think the A158 ticks all the same boxes as the F-91W except it looks a little more classy than the black plastic resin. Another alternative to that one would be the Casio F-91WM-7ACF this obviously is another F-91W just in a different color scheme. If you'd like a little calculator action how about a fancy Casio EAW-DBC-611-1DF Data Bank.
All suggestions I've given have all been less than 10 mm's in thickness. From all the looking I've done it really doesn't seem that you can get a digital watch that's less than 10 mm's thick that's not a Casio F-91W clone of some kind haha. Hope some of these suggestions could help.
Why everybody, I am looking to buy a everyday watch for under $100. I’m really just looking for a watch that will go with everything and I can always wear. So far the ones I’m considering in no particular order
Timex Weekender
This is nice because it’s cheap, and I could swap straps. However a lot of people complained of how loud it ticks, and it’s not water resistant
Timex Weekender Chronograph
This was my initial choice, but I have since second guessed myself and now am leaning elsewhere. I feel like the case is too thick, and it’s not too water resistant.
Invicta Pro Diver
I’m iffy on the metal band. I do enjoy the actual look of this, just not sure if it’s too classy.
Seiko 5 Automatic
This is the watch that’s in first right now. I would definitely purchase a leather strap for it off top, but some people reported it didn’t keep time well.
That’s my list. Overall, I’m just really looking for advice. I’m not very watch savvy, and would appreciate help by some of you pros. Let me know why these watches are good or bad, and offer some insight. I appreciate it!
Interesting, you can't even tell it's solar powered. I'll see what other suggestions I get before I buy it but it's looking good, thanks!
EDIT: I found this EcoDrive. It's looking like a winner! Thanks again! :)
Hello, r/watches! I'm entirely new to watches and was hoping for a couple suggestions for versatile dress-watches in the $300-$500 dollar range. Pardon me if my terminology is off.
I work as a programmer and I'd like to add a little bit of "gravitas" to my outfits. I tend to wear jeans/chinos and button downs, but sometimes I will go with jeans/tshirt combo. My shoes are either some nice sneakers or boots. Basically, I want a watch that I can wear anytime that says "Even though I'm a nerd, I have a little good taste."
I took a look at some of the popular watches on this subreddit and the one that really caught my eye was the Seiki sarb033. I love the clean, simple look and coloring of the dial and it seems like a watch you could wear with most any outfit.
I'm wondering if anyone here knows of any good watches that are similar in style and price to this watch.
TL;DR: Want a watch that will lend a bit of class to my simplistic outfits and will help me offset the "young programmer" vibe.
Sorry if this is vague or beating a dead horse!
EDIT: I don't know enough about watches (yet) to care about extra functionality or the difference in movement: I'm going mostly for aesthetic.
The black one you linked is the first "Swiss" automatic I ever purchased, and I absolutely love it.
You mention that you want a 38mm face, but the one you linked is 42mm (which I have, and recommend). The 42mm really isn't a large watch, I personally think the 38 would be to small, but I don't know how large your wrist is.
Either way, it is a fantastic every day kind of piece, the leather is really comfortable and nice looking, and the face doesn't seem out of place with casual wear or slightly dressed up.
Good luck!
Never heard of the Reverie before but I found the swirling dial rather stunning. Having said that, you're paying almost every single cent for the look. Yes it's all stainless steel, sapphire crystal with AR coating, and an entry-level Miyota movement.
For about the same price, you can buy a Seiko Alpinist, which looks somewhat similar to the Sea-Spirit. The size of the Seiko is more in line with the traditional dress watch size (38mm), similar but probably slightly better movement, better water resistance and Seiko's own in-house made crystals are some of the best money can buy.
For me, the Seiko is one of the best looking watch at its price point.
So many ideas after looking though this. So far I have a few watches in mind that I can easily buy and probably will.
I currently own a Maratac Pilot 2013 Large and I had a Vostok Amphibia (which unfortunately broke and I got a refund), and various other quartz beater watches (Weekender, etc). So I am thinking I should maybe just save up some money and buy something nice than what I have. In the future I'm definitely looking into a Stowa Antea, Omega Speedmaster and possibly an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Mid.
This is a husband birthday watch. Seiko Alpinist and it goes under a suite
But if it's out of your price range then the Seiko SKX007 is a 10/10 watch choice and is super popular in this sub. Very cool, useful tool watch that is super comfortable to wear.
Also this Seiko 5 might be a bit more dressy in that price range
A nice leather strap can be purchased as well and it's very easy to change or take to any watchmaker or even some mall kiosks and ask them to change it.
Hi guys,
Today I’d like to offer up a few well-priced pieces I no longer wear. Prices included Con. US shipping. I take PayPal (F&F preferred) and have good feedback here.
Without further ado, here’s the photo albums w/ timestamp: https://imgur.com/a/YiEaH
Orient Mako Orange -$110 SOLD
The Orient Mako line is well-known for punching above its weight class, and the Orange dial version is probably my favorite (I prefer it to my Gen 1 Orange Monster). This iteration also happens to fairly sought after, as eBay vendors are asking $197 and up (there’s an Orient Mako XL for $148 for bigger-wristed folks).
This watch keeps good time and is good cosmetic condition. Crystal is flawless. Bezel (a common problem with Orient divers) clicks smoothly. Case and bezel inserts has minor use marks. Watch will come on the pictured Nato strap as well as the OEM bracelet that’s sized to 7” wrist. 41mm case x 22mm lug width.

Citizen Eco-Drive AT0200 Field Chrono - $65 SOLD
This is a popular and well-reviewed field watch, and for good reasons: almost fool-proof Eco-Drive tech, one of the more legible chrono dials I’ve seen, robust lume, and nice touches such as the red second hand and matching red WR100 text. 39mm x 20mm.
My sample is well-kept and in good cosmetic condition. Crystal has a tiny hairline scratch near the 2 o’clock marker. Cases has normal wear marks. Caseback is spotless. Watch comes on an unworn NATO band.

Seiko Solar SNE039 - $58 SOLD
I love mechanical watches as much as the next guy, but it’s nice to have a grab-and-go quartz when you’re in a rush; if said quartz watch requires minimal long-term maintenance due to being solar-powered AND also bears a tasteful design, all the better! This was almost my exact rationale for getting this watch, only to receive something similar from the Mrs soon after that I end up wearing instead.
Watch is in near mint condition and bracelet comes with all links. Please refer to this Amazon product page for more information. 37mm x 19mm
Pics: Wrist shot, Lume , Closeup
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your time.
May I ask why brown? it's not the most versatile of colors. If you are shopping based on color you will most likely prefer a quartz watch (that is, battery powered).
Another question: how brown do you want to go? like just the dial, band or the whole watch? What kind of band do you prefer? People with hairy arms often complain about metal bracelets being hair pullers. Others like me can't stand plastic bands. What size or dial style are you looking for?
My advice would be to stick to well known brands like Swatch, Seiko, Citizen or even Casio. Hard to go wrong with any of them.
Some of my personal suggestions (pay attention to the size because some are small):
The following are not entirely brown, but you may like them:
There's an almost infinite variety with Casio. Here are some choices I think are interesting:
Hope this helps.
After I did a bunch of research and talked to other full time working Mamas, I ended up with the Medela Freestyle- I love it. It's a double pump electric and a rechargeable battery. So, just my $.02.
But, other advice, seriously La Leche saved me as well, I went to a few meetings before hand and when I had some problems, I had numbers to call and helping voices to guide me through.
The other thing I HIGHLY recommend is getting a hands-free bustier. I got this one (http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Wishes-Hands-Free-Breastpump-XS/dp/B00295MQLU) and love it. I can work on the computer, walk around my office, whatever while pumping. And, you can just use it over your nursing bra, so you don't even have to get naked in the office. Worth it. Good luck!
Firstly this was a highly interesting thread.
As for my list of brands, which I for simplicity sake try to stick to (makes it easier with sizing). This list is a work in progress since there are a few staple wardrobe items that I have yet to find any specific brand that fits my size and budget.
Work/everyday
Shirts: Eton
Dress pants: Hacket
Dress shoes: Carmina (although this is my most diverse category)
Weekends/casual
Jeans: Levis
Outdoor clothing: Fjällräven
Casual shoes: Converse or Haglöfs depending on how outdoorsy I am feeling.
Accessories
Since most of these items are intended for at least 5-10years of use its a bit of a stretch to say that I have decied on a brand for life but for completeness sake:
Wallet: Mokkolabs A small Estonian etsy shop I have had one of these in brown for 4years and it ages beautifully.
Watch: Seiko SARB017 still looking for a few strap options, currently I am using the original leather strap and an original seiko bracelet depending on mood and outside temperature.
Underwear
Undershirts/boxers: Dilling I believe that this is a danish company. However they make excellent merino wool underwear and provide easy shipping to the Nordics.
Aw, shucks...I just try to be the person I wish had been there when I got started with my various hobbies and whatnot.
Regarding Tissot, that's a great reason to look into their stuff! There are a ton of people in /r/watches who have them. Here's one of our brand discussion guides from a while back, and here are some of the Tissot watches that have been posted here in the past. There are a lot of great-looking vintage ones in there. I remember when this one was submitted and I started to salivate.
And while I don't personally own a Tissot, I do have a lack of dressy watches in my collection and I personally love this one. It's a timeless style, with a bit of retro goodness. I'm adding it to my Amazon wish list to taunt myself.
Good luck with your search, and feel free to message one of us if you have any questions going forward!
You could just keep buying MVMT and just make sure to get it at a fair price - IE, 50%+ off - via gray market sellers.
Maybe Timex will have something with the same minimalist design you like, but sadly the legit brands in your price range (Casio, Citizen, Seiko, Orient) haven't quite nailed the minimalist aesthetic. They've given it a shot to try to claw some of the market back, but honestly I think the results are not great. For example, here's Casio's attempt at a minimalist watch: https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MQ24-1E-Black-Resin-Watch/dp/B000GAWSHM/ref=sr_1_14
The price is certainly more honest than the $200 MSRP that Daniel Wellington will try to charge for cheaper/worse quality of build and components, but the design is still just a little... off, right? Too much text, hands lack refinement, didn't quite nail that minimalist aesthetic. So if someone looks at this Casio and decides they want a DW instead, I can't entirely fault them. I would just recommend that they find someone selling that DW watch at a more honest price (IE, around $50).
If you start moving upmarket into the $500-$1k range you can look at legit brands like Junghans, Nomos, Hamilton, etc. that do the minimalist design right. These will last longer as the construction and component quality will be higher.
Or you could just buy a MVMT on ebay or joma for $50. At $50 it's not really a ripoff; it's basically disposable. Watch enthusiasts will sneer at the brand and might assume you got ripped off at full retail price, but most people won't care. And you will basically never meet a "watch person" out in the real world unless you actively seek them out.
I'm not positive but I don't think roughout will do very good in wet conditions. Also I think if you don't like the color of the boot don't buy them, get some boots in a color you like. I'm guessing you want those because you can get them cheap locally, but if you're trying to stay cheap maybe something like this or this might work better for you. Or look for some used Red Wings.
Something with a lugged sole will grip much better than the wedge sole on all of these but I think unless you're running around in snow/ice very frequently you'll be fine, plus you could always get some cleats for them. It'll be pretty impossible to make any boot completely waterproof but they'll be quite water resistant as they are without any conditioner/wax.
Also, check out r/goodyearwelt.
It's a pretty casual belt, in that it's very thick and hearty. Works great with streetwear/workwear, probably not as well if you're dressing up.
I have it in Sunset Brown and it matches my Amber Iron Rangers perfectly. They go together like they were made for each other. I'm now buying the Natural leather to match better with my Hawthorne Iron Rangers. Yes I own two pairs of IRs because I'm a crazy person.
I think the belt will look great with sperry's.
I was need some help deciding on a entry-level skeleton watch.
I did some digging in the side bar but could not find (with the exception of one or two) any good skeleton watches. I've always had a fascination with those style of watches and would like it to be my style of choice for my first watch.
Edit: To give you a better idea, I was wanting a skeleton watch with the characteristics of a dress watch. Slim, shallow, not bulky, dark leather strap, black, mechanical, and with the face missing to see the functioning guts. Imagine this: Citizen Eco-Drive Men's BM8475-26E Stainless Steel Watch with Leather Strap https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005MKGOOY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_o6hYxb55G7QEW , but with a skeleton face.
This watch would be something that I would wear everyday, with or without dress clothes. And something I thought would be really neat if it was also to be a diver. Sometimes I can be in rather unfavorable conditions (ie water), so for it to be water proof would just be unbelievable.
Thank you guys for your time.
Right now this $10 Casio is the only slightly dressy watch I have.
I like it but the crystal (plastic?) has gotten more and more scratched from general wear. I don't think I want a nylon band since the watch will get wet frequently if I wear it while working.
I don't have a lot of money to spend but would like to get a slightly nicer analog watch with a date function for under $100. I plan to use this watch while bartending so it will be splashed in triple sinks for a few hours every day. But I might just wear the Casio I have now while working since it's already slightly dickerd and only $10.
So far I've found these two through Amazon:
$21 Tonnier
$29 Timex Easy Reader
If someone had a gun to my head I'd buy the Timex but I'm not in a rush to buy and need to do more research.
I'll link a few more to get an idea of the style I'm looking for. Definitely looking for a smaller watch that won't get in the way or snagged on stuff.
$25 SONGDU
$22 Biden
$20 Curren
$24 VAVC
Didn't do much research into those last couple but just linking the style I'm looking for and I'll add some more on. I like high contrast black/white faces but I'm also cool with red/brown/blue accents but the more color neutral the better.
In my opinion there really isn't an end or a limit to the # of items to have, each is unique and can be used in its own way.
At 250, I would probably consider a watch, possibly sunglasses other than what he has, or a few button downs/shirts for the summer
I always would love more shirts especially if they're in a pattern I don't have or a fabric I don't wear that I might have wanted. You could go with some floral for the spring/summer? Try club monaco and Jcrew for some nice options (i've definitely been wanting to buy a few). For watches, I have citizen eco-drives and I've found them to be really great watches - you can definitely find some around that price range too.
This nighthawk isn't too bad imo: http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BJ7000-52E-Nighthawk-Stainless-Eco-Drive/dp/B00074KYC8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1394682195&sr=8-6&keywords=citizen
Good luck!
Have you ever double checked your size at /r/abrathatfits? I am asking because most stores tend to fit everyone busty into DDD sizes which often results in bad bra fit that can be the main reason for painful and uncomfortable bras. I went from 32DDD to wearing 28GG bras from UK bra brands and have stopped having issues with shoulder steps digging in and band not providing enough support. Not to mention that the bras make my boobs look way nicer. Before, I would attempt to alter the band too but it never worked too well.
There are lots avaliable on the internet, in different pretty colors, styles and patterns from bust friendly UK bras. Sometimes it's harder to find plain ones. Most are fairly pricy, but I have found lots of $40 bras on sale in my size before. Nordstoms if you have one near also stocks lots of DD+ sizes in all kinds of styles, brands and colors!
For sports bras, I really recommend Panache sports bra. https://www.amazon.com/Panache-Womens-Underwire-Sports-Bra/dp/B005X5FG2O It's supportive, very comfortable and makes exercising not a terrible experience. There are lots of sales too so if you don't mind the more colorful styles, you can generally find a discounted style fairly easily.
Context, budget, and desired features
I am a mid thirties dad, with a desk job in the maintenance field. I work with my hands very frequently, am outdoors a lot and I normally dress casually. I will wear colored shirts once in a while, and often wear jeans or khaki shorts. I have a fossil watch with a bracelet that I got as a gift about 10 years ogo and quickly stopped wearing it after I got a cell phone. I'm sick and tired of pulling my phone out and being chained to it. I tried a smart watch, but I'd much rather live a simpler life with my EDC. I would like a watch for every single day, in the future, I could see getting a piece with more bling for dressier occasions. My budget is up to $300, but I'd rather be around $200, so that I'm not too hurt if it gets broken or lost.
Movements
As of now I am gravitating to non battery operated due to the cost of battery replacement with a water resistant model costing $70 to keep the guarantee. I realize that I can do it myself most likely, but I want a quality piece, and don't want to mess it up.
I don't mind solar.
Romantically I want a auto, but would prefer one with a winder also.
I'm worried that I would forget to wind a mechanical.
Size
My wrist is around 8 1/4 inch. I prefer a 38-42 mm.
Wanted features
Black dial
A simple face that is not busy
Replaceable strap
Date
Sapphire crystal
Brushed, not polished body
I'm not sure how bracelets work, I don't mind as long as it can be switched out to a nato.
*A black body would be nice, but I'm concerned about the looks of scratches showing though.
What I have looked at
Timex Men's T49961 "Expedition Scout"
I like the looks of this watch a lot, but the overall quality is lacking.
SEIKO 5 SNZG15J1
The only thing that I don't like about this piece is that the numbers are not placed at the outside edge near the bezel.
Citizen Eco-Drive BM8475-26E
I'm not a fan of the large numbers and the painted body will not likely hold up.
Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive
I really love this piece other than the polished body
Hamilton Khaki field HML-H69419363
This is a front runner other than being on the small side of my preference and me forgetting to wind it.
Hamilton Khaki Field Auto #H70555533
This I like, although I would need to buy used.
Are there any other that you can recommend? The only place that I've really looked is Amazon. I cant seem to find a better retailer.
I'm just getting into watches again and this is my first automatic. I've been enjoying reading this subreddit and watching a lot of Youtube watch channels and picked up that the Seiko 5 line is a great entry level watch. Most people recommend the 809, but I didn't want to go for that one as I've already got my eye on a few other higher-end Flieger-type watches, so I wanted to find something different in the Seiko 5 line and this one caught my eye: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK789-Analog-Automatic-Silver/dp/B0018N0HL0. I've had it a week and it's been great. It's surprisingly high quality and looks even better in person than it does in pictures. I just put it on a NATO yesterday and that's been a nice change, too, although the bracelet it comes with is not bad, IMO.
I use the Medela Pump in Style Advance (free through my insurance). Are you going to be pumping due to a return to work? The version my insurance provided doesn't include the extras that came with the PISA when my sister purchased hers in 2011 (prior to Obamacare), like the backpack, the battery pack, the cooler bag, and freezer pack. My sister gave me hers, so I use all of these things and would recommend purchasing them or something like them if you will be pumping at work.
I also recommend a Simple Wishes hands free pumping bra. My lactation consultant recommended watching this video to learn tips about maximizing production: http://newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/MaxProduction.html, and I use these techniques throughout my pumping sessions every day.
I pump twice a day at work - at 10am and 2pm - for 20 minutes each time, not including set up and take down time. I keep my milky pump parts in a gallon ziplock bag in a mini fridge (that I bought on sale at Best Buy for $99) behind my desk after the morning pump session. Since they are refrigerated, I don't have to go rinse or wash them in the communal office kitchen sink between pumping sessions. I take them home every night and wash in hot, soapy water, and then I sterilize them in the Medela sterilizing bags in the microwave. I let them dry overnight on the Boon grass lawn drying racks. I have multiple sets of pump parts and bottles because sometimes they don't fully dry overnight. I also wash and reuse the ziplocks, but I plan on replacing them with PlanetWise clear storage bags (which are top rack dishwasher safe) to reduce waste. I keep one complete set of extra pump parts and bottles in my desk at work just in case I forget something - it's already saved me once!
To stimulate let down at work, I bring a slightly used burp cloth that smells like baby (smell is one of your strongest senses!), I watch videos or look at pictures of baby, and it sounds weird, but I close my eyes and visualize my hungry baby. The visualization plus the smell of the burp cloth does it almost every time.
Please let me know if you have any more specific questions!
ETA: My daughter was 20 weeks when I went back to work and she only took 5-8oz the first week at daycare, but I think that was just her adjusting to the transition. Now she takes between 10-14oz on average. I usually pump about 12-13oz. I built up a small freezer stash before going back to work just in case she outpaces me.
Seiko SARB033
Price: $345.00 [Amazon]
Movement: Automatic, Seiko 6R15
Style: Dress. Sports. Sports-elgance. Daily-wearer.
Size: 38mm w/o crown
Link: Amazon, Seiya
Description: Seiko needs no introduction, and this is one of the most popular Seiko watches in this range. The whole SARB line is loved across the internet for the value they present in this price range, and the SARB033 perhaps most-so. It is one of the most affordable SARBs and offers a clean, classic style and Seiko's in-house calibre 6R15 with hacking and hand-winding. The whole SARB line has, until recently, been exclusive to the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM).
The watch comes on a comfortable steel band, and has a display caseback. The face is black with applied luminous hour markers and dauphine hands, also lumed. The lume isn't incredibly strong, but works fine. The watch also has a date function. Crystal is Sapphire, flat, and quite scratch resistant.
I have owned this watch and absolutely loved it. It's a go anywhere watch with a real dressy feel. An excellent mechanical starter in the sub-$500 range with office and casual appeal.
Hello, I really like this watch and the price but would like a different color. I’m looking for a similar color scheme as this watch , more of a dark watch with blue trims or highlights while still having luminescence. Is there any watches that fit this description or should I just settle for something. Any help would be incredibly appreciated
Edit: even a version of this where the orange spots are blue would be amazing
I don't think it's terribly big but it's far too thick for your hand IMO. I'd look for thinner options if you want an automatic watch with lume (the stuff that makes the dial glow).
Unfortunately, you can't really get an automatic for that low unless you look at used options. BUT, I'd give the Seiko 5 lineup a glance.
Here's a watch that perfectly fits all of your specifications, That is: Under $100, Automatic, has Lume on the hands, and it should fit your wrist size.
Here's another:
And another:
I'd return it and keep looking around. The watch gave you a good idea of what wrist sizes you should be looking at. All of the watches above are between 36mm and 39mm respectively.
Look through the Seiko 5 lineup. Alternatively, look around the used market or try to hunt for deals when they come up. Massdrop always has watches for sale so it's worth a shot there. There's also /r/Watchexchange to buy watches from other redditors. You can't do much with $100 but if you try something good will usually come along.
Ok, this is so eerily similar to my own situation that I felt I had to comment. I haven't lost my Easy Reader (yet), but I've been looking around a bit and I've liked both the Bulova watch mentioned by DanOlympia (it comes with a brown strap as well) as well as this Citizen eco-drive. I saw the Citizen on someone the other day, it looks really good, it's not too expensive on Amazon, and I think it's pretty good quality.
I only ever wear a watch when I go surfing, but I recently kept forgetting to take it off for a few days and actually kinda like the convenience. It was a cheap Casio, so now I'm looking for something that serves the same purpose but looks nicer for daily wear.
Some of my main criteria:
-somewhat slim form factor. Something I don't need to take off to put a shirt on, for instance. I don't want a behemoth on my arm.
-let's say $100 or under. Cheaper is better. I don't want to have to worry about keeping it safe. I could be convinced to spend more if it's truly durable.
-analog or digital are fine. I don't really need all the functions that my Casio has
I always fed for about 15-20 minutes on one breast and then swapped him to the other and fed for another 10-15 minutes, then pumped both. I found if I didn't, I tended to get uncomfortable and leaky before he was hungry again.
Also, originally I thought it was a waste of money, as they're not cheap, but a good hands free pumping bra is a blessing. It lets you actually do things while you pump, even if 'things' is just play a game on your phone or eat lunch, otherwise you're stuck there holding the flanges on your boobs, which is a pain. I kind of felt like a cow in a milking bay, but the extra 15 minutes I had to do things was so useful I dealt with it. :)
I liked this one from Amazon. I think like most parenting, it's trial and error and trying to work out what works best for you and your baby. There are very few 'right' answers. :)
If you're spending that much, I'd make sure it's a mechanical watch. Some might disagree, but I wouldn't get anything quartz for more than about $100 unless you need it for some sort of specific use.
Now, that aside: Tissot is a good first choice, since they make quality pieces at accessible prices. The differences between the pieces you mentioned might just be movements, since I think at least a couple of those are quartz and some might be mechanical.
In that price range, my favorite is the Tissot Visodate. It's got the sort of style I think you might be looking for, while still not being too formal (i.e. appropriate for a college student that's going to have dinner with a professor and go to a party later that night).
Make sure you check out the buyer's guides in the sidebar - they're there for a reason, they're very helpful for people to get to know both what they might like and what they might ultimately end up buying.
https://www.amazon.com/Casio-Quartz-Resin-Sport-Watch/dp/B001AWZDA4/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=casio+watch&qid=1557862168&s=gateway&sprefix=casio&sr=8-4
OK, so I paid $16, not $12. There are less and more expensive options, but this is the one I have and it’s perfect.
I get that a lot of those who workout like to use apps on their smart watch or phone during their sessions to track stuff...
I keep track of lifting progressions in a journal that I bring to the gym. The idea of being connected to the internet while working out makes me cringe.
So like someone said in the comments, I just chill in between sets and focus on my breathing I guess. I genuinely think you’ll do better at the gym without checking your phone sporadically through a session. Being disconnected just lets you focus on the exercise and nothing else.
So I love this classic design. Seiko reissued this design for their “solar” watch. Here is an amazon link
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNE039-Stainless-Steel-Solar/dp/B0043ZT04K
Myself, I purchased this new at Costco for $99 when it was released (thinking around 2009) and I love it. It hold its charge and keeps great time. It has been in rotation as a daily work watch. It is so classy and nearly perfect IMO.
It is such a classic. Grand Seiko actually used the same design for one of their versions: SBGT037 9F83-0AH0
ELI5 quartz watch: vibration of a quartz crystal measures watch, most common modern type. Automatic watch uses kinetic movement (such as wrist moving back and forth while walking) to power a spring which keeps the watch moving, with a power reserve for when it's sitting (like in a case, or you're at a desk).
Chronograph is just a fancy term for stopwatch, but otherwise minimalist is pretty easy to work around. No shame in being a noob, we all were at one point.
On the pricier side, the Seiko Alpinist is a fairly minimalist. Rotating compass on the inside, brown leather strap, green background. Automatic movement with 60-hour reserve.
Slightly less pricey is the Seiko Prospex SRPA21, or the "Pepsi" diver. Diver watch, pretty good entry watch, also an Automatic movement as well.
In the 100-250 range, you could look at any Citizen Eco-Drive watch as well. There's too many variations to list out, but my favorite would be this stainless steel CA0621-05L. Chronograph feature, eco-drive is a quartz solar-powered movement unique to citizen, but other companies do solar powered quartz as well (namely Seiko with the Solar line).
Do you want a completely yellow sports bra? Panache has a great sports bra that comes in actual bra sizes, and the geo print has some yellow in it, but not an overwhelming amount. It's also just a fabulous sports bra in general, I highly recommend it.
The coral colorway (it's called Print Multi on amazon for whatever reason) has a nice bright but not neon yellow edging to it.
So I feed my 3 month old daughter at about 5:30-6:00AM. I usually leave my house around 7:00. I've been power pumping the last few days to increase my pumping output (20 min on, 10 min rest, 10 min on, 10 rest, 10 on, and quit) but normally I would only pump 20-25 minutes. After that first pump of the day I pump at 11:00 for 25 min and then again at 3:00 for 25 min. Those sessions usually get me enough milk for the next day at daycare (four 4 oz bottles so total of 16 ounces). I'm going to start pumping right before bed to maybe work up a little stash! The car pump gets me the most output since it's earlier in the morning.
I have the Spectra S2. I really like it. I think it retails around $300 in the US if insurance wouldn't buy it. If you are committed to pumping while at work I would definitely invest in a dual, hospital grade pump. My pumping bra is this one. When I'm ready to pump I just pull my shirt and bra up and strap on the pumping bra. So far I have no complaints! I have yet to find a pumping bra I would wear in replacement of a real bra.
When pumping make sure to have the correct fitting breast flanges! That's really important. Mine were too small and my supply started dropping just after a week. The correct fitting ones make a big difference in comfort and output.
Umm... DRINK all the water and EAT all the food!
That's kind of a review of my setup :)
> Or is Amazon just crossing out a really high price to make it look like a good deal?
Yes, yes it is. That's a very common tactic to sell cheap watches, chinese companies are especially guilty of this.
If you like the bold black look you could try to save a bit more and go for a Citizen. With the Citizen you'd get a nice and well-made watch from a good company that will run for the next ten years without even changing the battery.
I'm not sure if he wears/needs a watch but my wife picked this up for me recently and I LOVE it!!! It has a secondary 24 hour clock to set for zulu time (the hour hands for it are planes) and a built in E6B (flight calculator for time, fuel, speed, etc.). I've never met a pilot who has not admired it.
Edit: my wife just told me that after adding this to her cart and checking out on Amazon the price dropped another 20%, not sure if the sale is still active or not but it puts it closer to your $200 goal. Good luck and let us know what he ends up getting!!!
I’m 10 months postpartum and a 30G and I sooo feel you. That said, here are the two bras that worked for me!

Freya Women's Pure Uw Moulded... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JUPMJPA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I also recommend this wraparound bra for pumping (it goes over any existing bra or just over your boobs and is super adjustable) instead of a dedicated pumping bra, if you end up doing that:

You're on r/watches, so answer is going to be Seiko. I tend to agree in this case. Fossil is known for making oversized, overpriced, mediocre fashion watches. Seiko has been a quality watch and clock manufacturer since forever. The citizen is nice too, but I'm not a huge fan of the dial setup.
If you're willing to save up longer and are interested in mechanical watches, the Seiko SARB033 would be a really fantastic option, and offers a lot of value at its price.
At a lower price point, the Seiko SNE039 is an affordable quartz solar watch that scratches the same itch.
I'd suggest this citizen as well.
I mean, buy what you like, it's your money and your watch. But if I was going for that style, I'd pick from these. I can't say enough good things about the Seiko SAR series though.
If this post is not allowed, mods, please delete. I'm trying to help out an obvious newcomer to the watch world.
Why does it have to be that color?

My recomendation is purchase an SKX007, and put a Super Oyster bracelet on it.

Best bang for buck watch, and can be dressed way up or way down. Sporty watches are in. There is nothing more timeless and iconic (imo) than a diver and the SKX007 is a legend.

It's the move, and I'm sure somebody on here will sell you this exact watch. You'll love it.
W86 is a great watch for sure.
But my personal favourite for the gym and pool is this one. It has 100m water resist, it's a bit bigger and feels more substantial than the W86 or F-91w.

You said you are new to watches so maybe this next watch is for a few months down the line, but this is my all time favourite. Super durable, solar powered, atomic timekeeping, countdown timer, world time, 200m water resist and (in my opinion) great looking. I've worn this watch, hiking, swimming, gardening, camping, working on the car, woodwork you name it! Perfect timepiece.

To build on what Coffeeshopman said, if you're going to invest a hundred dollars, it may as well be a hundred well spent. The brands they listed are all Japanese and offer a good value of reasonably well made watches at lower price points. Citizen may interest you in particular as their Eco-Drive watches run off of batteries which are recharged from sunlight and artificial light, requiring very little maintenance.
Furthermore, you may need to investigate what kind of watch you want ( e.g., quartz vs. automatic, which is to say, battery-operated vs. self-winding mechanical gear operated) and what features you would like (some watches you linked have a chronograph / stopwatch for measuring elapsed time). There are pros and cons to these things, but most people on this subreddit heavily favor automatic watches.
Based on these ideas and your aesthetic guidelines, I've pasted a number of links below. I hope they are of some use to you. You will note that Casio is absent. This is merely because they are better known for watches that are more sporty in design and which are typically digital.

Its not exactly a formal watch, but the black/gold look is simple and elegant. For skinny wrists, the band grips nice without dangling. The band also isn't metal, but you can't generally tell. Its a low-profile watch all-around.
The usual story with this watch is: Bought it for casual use/crappy throwaway while traveling, but ended up wearing it 24/7 and bought another when it wore out. I think some of the reviews even say that. My dad and I both had one (stocking stuffers) and loved them. He only wears a different one now because it was a gift, and I don't wear watches. (Skinny wrists run in the family)
Maybe my experience will help. I have an average/narrow wrist (6.5") and am not into really big watches so I bought a Seiko SNK. The size works well, as I said I wanted something small and this fits the bill but I wouldn't go any smaller. Also if you have some size on your arms you can size up even more. No regrets though, great watch for the price.
If you have a larger wrist, like 7.25" or more, you might be happier with a SNZG15. It's also in the Seiko 5 line, has similar styling as the SNK, a bit more expensive but is 4mm larger and $40 really isn't much extra when you're talking about inexpensive, high value automatic watches.
Another one to look into is the Orient Defender. 42mm, slightly pricier than the SNZ15 but still a good value. Because it has a larger face it will tend to look a little larger on the wrist than the SNZG despite having the same size case.
If you are breastfeeding/pumping I LOVED this pumping bra. I would pump at night while washing dishes or bottles. Lol. Made life easy. I also agree with the above comments- nose frida snot sucker is amazing and I LOVE my ergo!

I got this watch from my grandmother for Christmas, and while I love the thought and I like the face of the watch just fine, the faux leather strap really doesn't do it for me.
I'm curious what you guys might recommend for this face? Would a bright orange NATO strap look stupid because the color of the oranges might be just a bit off? What about a black strap with an orange stripe? Or something completely different. Would love to hear your suggestions.
Thank you!
I'm getting married soon, and I'm thinking about purchasing a semi-nice watch to wear on the date and mark the occasion! This wouldn't be a gift; it would just be for myself - and I'm still a student, so I can't afford all that much. Recommendations outside of the newest buying guide for a dress watch in the sub-$1000 range would be appreciated!
Right now, I'm looking strongly at two options:
Tissot Visodate - Pretty classic.
Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece - I don't know anything about Maurice Lacroix, but I really really love the look of this watch. Given that it's twice the price as the Tissot for what I believe is still an ETA movement, though, I'm not entirely sure I can justify it.
Thanks very much for your help!
Had to be my boots. Nothing special, just Chippewa Apache's, but they really work with the Americana workwear style I've been moving towards. I especially like how they look with my red laces.
This year I made a big shift in my wardrobe. I had been dressing pretty well, but this year I made an effort to decide what "my style" is, and to really make sure my wardrobe matched with that. I settled on an Americana Workwear look, that I think matches well with how people dress in central PA, where I live. I used to feel out of place, like I was dressed a little bit too New England-y.
I'm glad to see someone on here that isn't automatically suggesting some flieger styled auto. Yeah they're awesome and have a history of being a pilot watch, but honestly something quartz is much better suited for actual flying. I'd recommend something like a Citizen Nighthawk or a Seiko SNA411. Recommending an automatic old school flieger to an actual pilot is sort of like recommending an M1 Garand to a modern infantryman.
These 2 Citizens should fit the bill:
Citizen AW1236-03A
Citizen BM8475-26E
THIS is a search I did on Amazon for Citizens under $150. There are plenty here that would fit your requirements.
Also, if you find one with something other than a leather band, switching it is super easy. Clockwork Synergy have a line of band that are great quality and easily interchangeable.
A $14 Casio. Which I'm pretty sure was only like $10 or so when I bought mine.
Been faithful for several years now. 10 year battery. Has the date always displaying which is nice because I never know the date.
I also like I can just dip it in oxivir or whatever to get it clean without worrying about killing it.
I'm about to become a grad student, and I joined MFA wanting to up my style quotient accordingly. I've gradually become interested in style over the last few years, perhaps partially as an outlet for the visual sense I developed through art and graphic design as a kid (I've since gotten interested in music and writing instead as creative outlets). I can also see that some of my interest in style has come from feeling insecure at various times and wanting to control and shape the way others see me. I've also undergone several shifts in personal identity and outlook that have provoked me to dress differently over these few years.
Right now I'm getting ready for a year of studying abroad (a philosophy masters program in Belgium) and I've been using MFA to get a sense of the possibilities that there are for personal style. Some of this amounts to just being aware of various products and brands. I think I first got clued into Bonobos on here; per MFA's influence, I bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds recently (then resold them since they didn't fit); I purchased my first MTM shirt (which I recently posted to MFA asking about the fit of) through seeing what difference a good fit can make in photos people post to MFA. Right now, I'm trying to budget so that I can get both a pair of brown Red Wings and a pair of APC jeans before I leave for a year abroad so that I can wear them both pretty much every day. I think I may need to save for living expenses instead, though. One thing MFA has helped to teach me is how to plan a wardrobe in advance (know what kinds of pieces to be on the lookout for) and to not only get a good price, but also to get the right item at the right time.
If I were to receive the coupon, I'd like to think I could justify the expense of the Light Gray Three Piece Suit or the Classic Navy Blue Suit for job interviews and class presentations in the coming year. It'll be more practical, though, for me to get the Partner Pink Pinpoint Oxford and a silver tie clip as staples to work into and enhance the wardrobe I already have. Thanks for doing this awesome contest, veroz!
You could take a look at these Timberland Earthkeepers. They're waterproof, and will suit you for how long you'll be out.
I definitely agree with /u/riley212 though, in that most places will have clear sidewalks and it shouldn't be that much of an issue. The Chippewa Apaches that were mentioned also look pretty good.
As far as socks, smartwool is good, Kirkland Wool Trail socks will do you if you want cost effective.
I know that when you talk about expanding your budget, the thought of laying down more money can be pretty painful depending on your situation, and I would hate to encourage you go to beyond your means. That said, if you were willing to go up, here are the kinds of things you can think about, which are much better than what you're looking at now:
First, the Victorinox INOX, which seems like the perfect watch for what you're describing. I tried one of these on in a store the other day and they are fucking tough as shit. When I was there they just threw it at stuff. Hard. There are some intense videos of them being tested on YouTube. I'm probably gonna get one for my mountaineering uncle for Christmas. I really think this watch would suit your needs perfectly - it's got a solid military heritage.
The
Hamilton Khaki
is a popular field watch. I want the titanium version (much more expensive). You can find one for ~300, Amazon's not the cheapest place to buy.
If you are willing to come up to ~300, Seiko and Citizen have some pretty tough diver's watches in that price range. I'll second /u/JoCoLaRemix's suggestion for the Seiko Monster, which I think is hideous, but has a good reputation.
Happy hunting!
The prices are a bit inflated at the moment because it was recently discontinued. But the seiko sarb033 is pound for pound one of the best most versatile watches under 500$
Often time you'll hear people talk about the rolex explorer as "the perfect 1 watch collection" what this basically means is it can function in any circumstance. The sarb checks the same boxes. Simple black dial, sub 40mm so can work as a dress piece, 100m water resist and a metal bracelet so you can dress it down and go swimming. At first I didn't like it because it was too simple. But the simplicity of it is it's greatest strength. Pretty much the only watch you'd ever need.

Posted this the other day -
Looking to buy my first pair of boots and want something that I can wear this Fall but will also hold up well in a Colorado winter. Want to wear it everyday in winter and most days in the fall. I looked at the boot buying guide and like the Chippewa Apache Lace-up Boot. Is this a good winter boot? What color should I get that work best? brown or black? Dark brown or light? I wear a size 12US in Nike running shoes and I tried on some CDB and the 10.5 was the most comfortable. What size should I get? I'm a little nervous that I will buy a size too small or have wider feet than I thought and the boot being too narrow. Is this a good place to post this or should I just make my own post?

Someone said it was weird to go down 1 size and half and not just size and recommended I get sized up.
Went and used the brannock thing·a·ma·jig and it seems I am in fact a 10.5? I don' know how to read the side part if I'm wide or not, can anyone tell me?

Congrats on your promotion buddy!
If you really want to stick to your budget, one of the best budget watches that will last a long time, have an automatic movement, numbered dial and a beautiful but small face is the SNK807. You could also use the remainder of your budget and purchase a nice metal bracelet to complete your criteria and end up with something like this.Other than that I would suggest purchasing this Invicta however there are no numbers on the actual dial. Happy hunting!
came here to say this. I like these watches for their slim, simple look, but I've had one that battery didn't last more than 6 months; another where the time-set pin got unscrewed which rendered the watch nonfunctional (couldn't set time).
It's worth it to buy a mid range watch (self-winding too!) if you want longevity.
EDIT: I know everyone has different views of frugal, but sometimes we're just looking for deals... the ROI on a mid-range watch will be greater for one of these (amazon.com) from my experience. I'm sure there are other great watches out there as well.
I couldn't give it up! I want to be able to pass it on to my kids and have them wear the first watch I bought. I have a strong feeling it will be able to last that long.
Thank you! I knew there was a word for them, but didn't know for sure.
What would you recommend for tool watches? I really like the look of this Citizen BM8475-26E but the crown looks huge and I sort of want a chronograph.
About that price range, yes. Thank you!
My personal opinion is no. The general advice is to buy a watch from a watch company, rather than a company that puts its brand on another company's watch.
What draws you to this watch? It kind of looks like you like simple black watches. Do you like large watches? Do you like field watches? Do you care about quartz (battery powered) vs. automatic (a weight swings around in the back and winds the spring; less accurate, kind of cooler, more expensive to service in five years). Like pencilcup said, field watches are a very casual style.

Or maybe you'd like something more like a flieger watch?
http://www.countycomm.com/maratacpilotlarge.html
Or a black Orient bambino?
I've been there. I found that buying actual running shoes and workout clothes (rather than wearing old college tees and cotton leggings) was a great motivator. I told myself that I didn't buy these things just to have them go to waste (and a small part of me liked showing off my ~fabulous shoe and shirt combos~). As I started exercising more, my matching game became A++ and I invested in more expensive items (specifically, a good, supportive sports bra)
I would start off buying cheaper workout clothes rather than diving into "nicer" brands like Lululemon. Old Navy and Target (and apparently Forever21?) have great affordable options. I've also gotten great deals at TJ Maxx, Marshalls and outlet stores
Seiko Alpinist
Price: 350 - 450
Water resistance: 200m
Movement: Mechanical
Size: 38mm
Link:
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ
Description: Amazing looking watch with a eye-catching, yet classy green sunburst dial with a polished silver body providing a nice contrast. Classic field watch from Seiko released in honor of pioneers who explored the mountains. The numbers are in gold, with gold hours, minutes, and seconds hands filled with lume. It has an inner dial that functions as an approximate compass when aligned with the sun. There is the day, white on black background at the 3 o ' clock position.
The stock leather strap is a bit stiff out of the box, but it softens up and forms to your wrist after a couple of weeks. I rubbed in a bit of 99% aloe vera to speed up the softening process. It worked and added a nice patina too. I absolutely love this watch. AMA.
The Bauhaus style watches appear to wear very big even if their measurements aren't physically big. Take the Braithwait for example - they are 40mm but check out the dial, it stretches across almost the entire 40mm width, with hardly any bezel, and minimal detail on an otherwise spartan dial. That is going to appear very big on the wrist.
My tip is, when looking at these styles, try to keep it back closer towards the 37mm mark if that is what he is used to wearing.
Check out this one as an example. I have recommended it elsewhere as a good budget minimalist watch but by a happy coincidence it works out to be that perfect size. 98H51 is similar version with a two-tone case and a bit of detail on the dial.
I wear a Casio W800H-1AV all the time when I guard and teach. It has a stopwatch which I've used to time myself doing lap swims. I`ve swam tons of lengths, dove down 5m, and spent hours in the water with it without any problem.
It's $12.19 right now on amazon
It's 100m Water Resistant, the only thing to note is that the watch face can get scratched pretty easy. But it's really easy to use and it's cheap.
Absolutely love it and highly recommend it. Sometimes I don't know what I'd do without it.
I've seen this Bulova watch on here, but it's a great option:

I have the one with the bronze sheen and I love it. The strap is a little ehh, but that can swapped out if desired.
How about this?

Watch Disscusion On FMF
Got this on eBay recently for about US$40 shipped. Unlike modern day digitals designed to have the same "retro" look/feel (e.g. this Casio), this thing has a case made completely from stainless steel instead of silver-painted plastic, so it's far less likely to just fall apart after a few years. Also unlike modern Casios (including the G-shocks, which are the only ones I would trust to last a long time), the harder to use recessed pusher at the top left is only used to adjust the time, not to do every day things like reset the stopwatch, which should be quick and easy. 70s/80s digital watches really are better built and better thought out than most of today's.
The crystal is in pretty good condition for a 30+ year old watch (older than me!). Unfortunately the bracelet it came with is a horrible painted plastic thing that doesn't fit properly and rattles around a lot, so it's going to have to be replaced. Tracking down the original bracelet for this would probably be more effort than the watch itself was worth, so I'll probably just try to find a generic bracelet that has the correct taper to match the casing, or maybe even a black NATO or similar?
It's not as pretty as all the lovely divers that get posted here, but it's a lot more practical for me as a daily wear-to-work watch, since I never have to worry about forgetting to adjust the calendar for new months, and it comes with a chronograph and countdown timer, both of which I'll use often. I also really like that it shows the month and the date on the front screen, in that order - as an Australian living in the US who is trying to avoid rewiring his brain too much, I like that when I'm filling out forms I can just read the date off of my watch in the American order without having to think about it.
Can you give us specific functions you may want? There are several aviation-specific watches, such as those offered by the company Citizen:
There are also other Citizen chronographs that aren't pilot-watch-specific. Some of them will cost less than $200, but at this point, I'd consider a G-Shock Aviation series. Specifically, the GA-1000-8A (I like the colors, but it comes in several other flavors).
EDIT: I see you were looking at the G-Shock already. It's pretty cool looking - and durable.
I love my Spectra -- well as much as one can love a machine that sucks your nipples. I started pumping in the hospital with a Medela Symphony, and I get so much more milk with the Spectra.
I exclusively pumped for several weeks while LO was getting the hang of latching, so here are some tips:
I'd recommend getting a power invertor so you can pump in the car if you ever need to. I have this one from Amazon and it works great.
Prepare a "pump bag" to hold all your supplies -- hands-free bra (I have the Simple Wishes bra), pump, storage bags and bottles, permanent marker to label storage bags, a little container of olive oil to lube up my flanges (helps to prevent rubbing), small kitchen rags to wipe up milk, extra pump parts, etc. I use an LL Bean tote bag to transport everything.
In between pumps, I store all my pump parts in a gallon ziploc bag and stick it in the fridge so I don't have to wash them after every pump.
Vintage Seiko Blue Bell-Matic - $150?
I bought this model from this seller about a year ago. I wear it a lot, but I need a better band for it.
Seiko Rose Gold Kinetic Chronograph - $558
I saw this watch in San Juan on my honeymoon. My wedding band is titanium with a stripe of rose gold, and the watch matched perfectly. I should have bought it.
Graf Zeppelin Hand Wind Chronograph - $800
Or the Junkers with the power reserve indicator for $550. Decisions, decisions.
Tissot Retro Visodate Automatic - $488
Or the rose gold Le Locle for $400.
Grand total = $1996
Update: I just read the rules again and realized that my Bell-Matic is in violation. However, I'm attached to it and cannot manage for the next ten years without it. So screw you all. :-D
You're basically looking for a dress watch from the looks of it. I set some filters and tried to find you a watch under $150. Also threw some expedition watches into the mix. I hope you don't mind that most of them are from Bulova. Their dress watches look pretty great.
I don't have the hugest wrists so the SNK809 sits really well on mine, but if you're looking for something a bit larger within the same Seiko 5 family I'd recommend the SNZG15 at 42mm. Similar design and looks pretty slick in it's own way as well.
A nice leather strap on it would probably change up the feeling of it to more refined.
I have a similar model:
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Strap-Calendar-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=pd_sbs_watch_1
And it's extremely versatile, and I put a new plain brown leather strap on it and have gotten a lot of compliments on it. Also, the brown + gold lends itself well to a dressed up outfit or jeans and a button up.
The black + silver is also a good colour combo and I think the best feature of this watch is the size of it's face and its simplicity. Also, it's a good watch if you have thin wrists, like I do.
Sweet man, Twin Cities?
I have Iron Rangers with lugged soles similar to the Brooks Brothers version, but the new Iron Rangers in Oxblood have a half-sole that would probably work well too if you want the style. Other "MFA-Approved" Red Wings would be the Moc Toe and the Beckman.
Out of those three I would recommend the Beckmans because their soles are the most useful unless you're willing to shell out the money for the Brooks Brother's Iron Rangers. I got lucky with mine and bought a pair of Iron Rangers with custom lugged sole off Grailed for about $200.
I see alot of people mentioning Skagens, so I figured I would post some Bulovas!
Here
and
Here depending on what you're looking for.
They're the nicest ones I have found for the price, but I'd recommend checking out the other models listed on Amazon.
Good luck!

Get this! I wore it my entire 100 year, and I plan to wear it through my 200 year as well. Me and a ton of other cadets bought them for our candidate class, and now it seems like half of our squadron has one. Super cheap, works great, and has survived mud, water, and impacts.
Let me just start off by saying I have no clue about anything with watches. I'm a total newbie. I've been wanting a nice watch for so long, and coming across this subreddit and searching around has really been a wild ride. I realized that I really liked the leather straps + bronze combination, so I was looking for something of the sorts. Well, I went to a Military base and bought this Guess U0494G2 for around $55, due to a massive sale. I used to have a very cheap Casio MQ24-1E, which I never really liked. This watch, however, is one of my favorites, and I can't wait to wear it around! :)
If you have nothing but negativity to say, please just keep it to yourself. I'm very happy with this purchase, and nothing can really change that.
Probably the SARB033. I'd buy a leather strap (not a nato) for dress settings and use the provided steel strap for business settings. I feel that the watch face is versatile enough to fit both business and dress settings. The watch hands are a little too dressy but i think it'll work in a workplace setting.
I honestly think that a Quartz watch would be better in the long run but I'm a fan of Automatics so there's that.
If not the SARB, then I'd probably get a [Hamilton Khaki King](http://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-mens-watch-h64455533.html?utm_source=googleproduct&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=googleproductsearch&pt_source=googleads&pt_medium=cpc&pt_campaign=(ROI). I think it's versatile enough for most business and dress settings as it is. But i like a little variation so i wouldn't splurge on the Hamilton if it means i can't get a second band for it.
Oh man, MFA is almost information overload, but thanks for pointing me there.
Jackets, I like Filson's Mackinaw Cruiser, Tin Cruiser, and Packer. I think I might just have to bite the bullet and pay for the quality. I know my Grandfather has had one of the Mackinaws for close to 60 years now and it is still in heavy use. I really like the Packer, but it would need a wool insert to be warm enough I think.
For Shoes, I like this from Red Wing, but it is pricey.
Yes. It's this one.
It's awesome because it is super adjustable (big issue for me with my smaller ribcage and bigger boobs) and is wider so it actually covers and provides a little support. And the holes are nicer.
No problem. I saw you replied to the other guy that you were from Northwestern, me too! I'm gonna be a junior in Weinberg. go cats.
Although I don't know exactly what socks you're talking about, I have heard of Darn Tough, and yep, that's the kind of sock I mean. I'm talking about wool hiking socks that you get from REI or another outdoor store. I got a nice thick pair of REI brand wool socks for 7 bucks last year, and they've been no worse for wear since then.
About the boots, I can't give you any personal recommendations, as I've been using a cheap off-brand boot for the past two winters (before I got into fashion) and am in the market for some Red Wing Beckmans or maybe one of Chippewa's new service boots. Another cheaper option that people suggest here is Chippewa's Apache boot, because the price sometimes drops below $100 on Amazon, if you use their coupon. Again, I do not own any of these boots myself, I'm shopping for them as well, so I suggest you look into it some more. Make sure you also learn to take care of your leather boots, that can really help stretch your money.
Worst months are definitely January/February. Usually when I go home for winter break it's only in the 30s or 40s in Chicago, and then I come back in the new year and the temps are in the teens. Yep, the fall months are pretty nice, they start getting down to 60s and 50s but that's pretty much sweater weather. So, you definitely have a lot of time before having to make any of these purchases.
Let me know if you have more questions!
Very nice collection, I'd recommend buying a few lower end pieces to compliment a your higher end ones. Plus its a good way to branch out the collection. I'd recommend the ones below.
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SARB017-Mechanical-Alpinist-Automatic/dp/B000KG93BQ
https://www.amazon.com/Orient-Anniversary-Skeleton-Limited-SDK05005T/dp/B01CZ6385A/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1506040216&sr=1-3&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=Orient+star+open+heart
Edit: Id probably go for the Alpinist though, your collection is very monochrome and could benefit from the bright green sunburst dial of the Alpinist. Really any brightly colored watch would work here. You also lack a "beater" or field watch and I think this watch is a superlative one.
I recommended the Orient because of it's open heart design, I believe all collections should have at least one open heart or skeletonized piece
but any skeletonized piece would be fine.
I would also get a dressy watch, as most of the watches in your collection are sports/diver watches.
I bought mine from Seiya, great guy with great customer service. But right now, looks like Amazon is your best bet
Yeah man definitely. I think the Thorogood Moc Toe is your best alternative to RW at your price. I personally have the 8" version but these are honestly your best bet. There are some different color options too.
Give this watch a try: http://www.amazon.com/Casio-A158W-1-Stainless-Steel-Digital/dp/B000GAYQJ0
I wear the slightly larger A168W model. This watch is fashionable atm but the style has been around since the 80s and is pretty proven to look good with most anything. It even looks great with a suit.
I recently purchased a Panache sports bra and love it! http://www.amazon.com/Panache-Womens-Underwired-Sports-Bra/dp/B005X5FG2O
However, my breasts are full on bottom. But the shape of the bra seems like it would hold in the top fullness. Maybe someone else here will have experience with this one and full on top? Good luck!
I usually recommend these Thorogoods for workboots in that price range. I have a pair and they are very comfortable despite being a little heavy. Also the plain toe version, which is a few bucks cheaper. I don't know if you can get them in Norway though.
You might have luck finding a pair of used red wings in good condition for around $150. Check the FMF weekly thread and ebay. Make sure you get something with a wedge or other thick sole. I like the vibram christy soles myself (same ones on the thorogood boots above).
i second this, or pay a little bit more for a metal strap:
amazon link
i have some watches that are "nicer" then the casio a158wa but i reach for the casio 70% of the time. it's small, thin, comfortable, easy to adjust the band (no removing links) and it gets a surprising amount of compliments because of it's 1980s appearance. and it's <$20.
[Hamilton & Khaki Field 38/42]
Price: $380 - $450
Movement: ETA 2824 Automatic with 80-hour reserveMovement: Hamilton H-10 Automatic with 80-hour power reserve (Thanks /u/InternMan for the correction)
Style: Sports, Pilot, Outdoors, Field
Size: 38mm or 42mm
Link: Amazon 38mm : [Amazon 42mm] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQ0BM2/): Joomashop 38mm
Description: Great all around everyday watch. Perfect entry level Swiss piece. The bracelet is very comfortable. Watch is a strap monster with the black dial.
Edit: Pricing, I guess prices have gone up. If it's your first Joomashop you can save $30 sometimes.
I love these too. The Casio F-91W is the classic (and has some interesting history. From what I've seen, though, you should absolutely not buy it at an Urban Outfitters or American Apparel. They will charge you well over twice what it costs on Amazon. (It should be <$10.)
Perhaps more in line with OP's style, though, might be a A158W-1 or a A168W-1 (or one of the 'related items'). Those bracelets class it up a bit.
What I wear most of all though is a Seiko a bit like this, which was a gift from my Grandfather. So 'vintage' digitals like that might be something to look at, although they will be a little more expensive.
There's also /r/watches.
I would go with these guys, they tend to hold up in weather a bit better than Red Wings (Vibram grippy sole): http://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-20080-M-Apache-Lace-Up-Boot/dp/B004TK2RPS
There are a few Amazon codes floating around on the search for them as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion/search?q=chippewa&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all
I like mine a lot (Columbus winters, lots of ice), but the break in process is pretty painful, but they're very nice boots. Eventually I'll sno-seal them as well. I wear a 13 in Converse/other true to size shoes, but wear a 12 in these.
It depends on the type of watch you'd like to get him. Seiko makes watches similar to the Tudor North Flag (which seems to have a Rolex Explorer I vibe going). Maybe an Alpinist, which is popular on here nowadays? The Longines Conquest could also stand in nicely, and it's sub-$1k on the grey market.
Bronze may be a good substitute for gold, and he seems to like tool/dive watches, in which case Halios is an option (the Tropik B also works with his wrist size). No display back though.
In the "quality $1k" category I also always think of Stowa. They make a beautiful marine watch with white dial, workhorse ETA movement, and display back for under $1k after converting to USD and dropping VAT.
Thanks for your help.
I've taken the plunge but have gone for a SNK289 instead: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0018N0HL0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00.
Went for this strap by Hirsch http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009NK6OHG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I've got a black face Skagen with black leather strap coming for Christmas which I intend to use for work (black leather shoes/black leather belt.)http://www.amazon.co.uk/Skagen-Analogue-Leather-SKW6104-Quartz/dp/B00O13IJ82/ref=sr_1_12?s=watch&ie=UTF8&qid=1450886945&sr=1-12&keywords=black
Went for the SNK289 as it has a white face and the brown leather strap will go well with my smart casual wear which tends to be brown leather shoes, brown leather belt.
Nice to have some variety.
I don't spend a lot on my watches, so it's probably my nicest one. I've been eyeing Hamiltons, but I can't seem to pull the trigger. I can afford it, but the reason that I can afford it is that I try not to buy things I don't need.
My other watches are:
Seiko Solar
Seiko 5 Automatic
Orient Automatic
The Citizen is my nicest watch and I like it. It's worth $130, which is what I paid. It's been ~$200 on Amazon for a while and I haven't bought it because it doesn't seem to be worth that price.
Invicta 8926OB [black dial]/ 8928OB [blue dial].
8926OB:

8928OB:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JQJS6M/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awd_PNwKwb0BTVJ1G
I have them both...along with about 40 other watches lol. They have the Seiko NH35a self winding movement in there. Solid daily watches sub $100USD in my opinion.
Also might be worth checking out Skagen if you are a fan of minimalist, light weight watches. I have one in my collection and love it.
Skagen:

Feel free to dm me if you have any questions!
I have a feeling a lot of people will suggest a weekender. it's cheap, clean, and thanks to nato straps you can mix and match it with a lot of different outfits.
I personally don't like the weekender because of how small it is on my wrist. If you want something that's pretty clean and classic looking, yet is still relatively flexible I recommend an Invicta.
It's a blatant ripoff of a Rolex Submariner but I've gotten several compliments on it. It's a nice intro watch
http://www.amazon.com/Invicta-Collection-Stainless-Coin-Edge-Automatic/dp/B000JQFX1G/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1411955275&sr=1-3
*edit: words
I would recommend trying out a wired sports bra if you can. Having a bra that encapsulates your breasts instead of compressing them really helps with comfort, support, and prevents uniboobing. I have this one by panache and I love it.
My humble opinion:
For <$500 I'd say go with an Orient Bambino or something from Seiko's SARB line. Both really punch above their weight if you aren't too hung up on brands. Tissot Visodates are nice too if you want something swiss. Don't forget swapping bands is super easy and an awesome way to change up your look without buying another watch
I really like the look of this Timex classic (Amazon India lists it as model no. TW2P484006S), as well as this similar Casio.
However, they're both rather small at 34mm and 32mm respectively, and I prefer a larger size (about 40mm and above). Do you know of a similar but larger minimalist digital watch by any brand that I could check out?
I'm not particular about its features, though things like a backlight, multiple time zones and 50/100m water resistance for swimming would be nice.
Thanks a lot!
You cannot go wrong with a Seiko 5. Absolutely beautiful watch, automatic, and very trust worthy. Just don't fall for a crappy Invicta.
Edit: You also can't go wrong with Citizen watches. I'm not a huge fan of them, but my old chief used to have the Citizen Nighthawk and it looked great.
I also exclusively pump. I do both sides at the same time, because when I was breastfeeding he would eat off both sides each time. I make sure to pump every time my LO gets a bottle. I find that a pumping bra (such as this one) is useful for letting me multitask when pumping. I use a boppy pillow to prop my LO up after feeding (once he was a few weeks old) so he can be next to me while I pump. I can interact with him and make sure he’s happy. He’s not a fan of lying flat on his back.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions!
Best: Ventus Mori. (image from worn&wound preview article)
I intended to back the kickstarter, forgot about it, and hadn't set a reminder, then after the kickstarter ended, I saw it again, shit myself thinking I'd missed out, so when I saw they were available for pre-order on the website, I pulled the trigger immediately on the brass bezel version with regular lume. I even lucked out because right before they started shipping, the guy who makes them emailed me to ask if I wanted the vintage lume version instead, because they had some of those left, and I said yes after spending a long time looking at the photos. I'm glad I switched because the vintage lume looks really awesome, and goes really well with the warm brass tone of the watch case.
Don't have any pics of my own to share because it's actually a birthday gift, and it's not actually my birthday yet, but I had a good look at it when it arrived and I love it.
Worst: Casio A158WA-1
Not a costly mistake, but despite looking really cool, this thing is unwearable because of how the bracelet constantly catches on my arm hair. My wife wears it and seems to be getting on with it, my arms aren't even that hairy but it just wasn't happening.
The watch that everyone on this forum is sick of hearing about because of its bang for your buck is the Seiko 5. The Seiko 5 is actually a line of watches and while most people think of the military looking ones there are actually several dress versions of the Seiko 5. Here is one example, and at this price you can afford to get a leather band as well. This way you can have both the metal bracelet and the leather strap to interchange as they are relatively easy to change.
Also take a look at some of the FAQs on this sub and you can google it as well but you may want to read about why we all love mechanical watches so much.
Good luck!
I exclusively pumped for a year! My boy was born at 37 weeks and just wasn’t big enough to get a good latch, so I began pumping when his weight gain wasn’t where it should be. Here’s some tips that kept my sanity throughout that year.
Simple Wishes Signature Hands Free Pumping Bra, Patented, Pink, X-Small/Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00295MQLU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_py8IDbNKRZTJM
You can do this! Best of luck!
I bought a smart watch U8 its called( to celebrate losing 2 stone). Then last month, I decided to buy a proper watch for my birthday.
I missed out on a second hand, Seiko 5, on Ebay. Showed my friend, & he bought me a brand new one from Amazon. SNK789
Loved it, but since I missed out on ebay, they kept showing other Seiko 5's from India. So I bought another, just to wear daily, to keep the new one for special occasions, like the weekend.
Found this community, & I have been looking at other watches on Amazon & ebay. Damn! I keep buying watches now. I just bought a Casio Diver's watch
I got an old display cabinet from a charity shop, I volunteer at, to display all my old film cameras. But now, it has more watches than cameras.
I need to un-sub from here.
I feel like you should invest in 100-150 dollars and get a reasonably good quality watch. You will use it for longer and be overall more confident. I have always favour automatic watches over quartz so therefore I feel like this is a great diver watch to start a collection at a reasonable price.
http://www.amazon.ca/Invicta-8926C-Collection-Coin-Edge-Automatic/dp/B000JQFX1G/ref=sr_1_1?s=watch&ie=UTF8&qid=1310889740&sr=1-1
Does he want an analogue or a digital watch? Either way, I would recommend a quartz watch. Quartz watches are much more durable and less delicate than automatic watches. A digital watch will be more durable than an analogue.
Even though it's not a G-Shock, a simple Casio digital with 100m water resistance, like the Casio W800H-1AV would probably do the trick.
If he prefers analogues, maybe something like a Timex Expedition
Or a tough solar, solar powered ani-digi like the Casio AQS800WD. This watch has the advantages of both a digital and an analogue and does not require battery changes like most quartz watches.
It's a Japanese quartz movement, so that's decent. I wouldn't say the list price is $590, more like $100 maybe.
Not a fan of the flashy red face and busy dials along with the metal bracelet. Personally, if I want a pop of color, I'll change the Nato strap on my Weekender, or I'll wear my Casio G-Shock.
Is it a good deal? To some, but not to me. I'd rather fork out an extra $40 for something like this which is much more versatile, well known, and probably more reliable.
Hope this helps.
Tell us a little more about what you are looking for! From the watches you mentioned, it looks like you want a black watch. Are you looking for something sporty, classy, or just an all around daily? Are you looking for something simple, or something with a lot of complications on the face of the watch? Ill link a few for reference
Seiko 5 I would change the strap to something that appeals more to you if you don't like it. Great starter watch though.
Invicta Pro Diver Ive heard some debate on the quality of these watches, but for your purposes I think it would work well.
Casio G-Shock Solar Sporty solar G Shock similar to the one you linked.
Seiko Solar Another Seiko but this one is on a metal band and is solar powered.
Timex Weekender Another great starter watch that comes in a million color combinations. I got one for my brother as a gift off Amazon for $17 when they were having a sale.
SEIKO SARB 033
Price: $330
Movement: Seiko 6R15, Automatic
Style: Dress
Size: 37mm (without crown)
Link: Amazon Page
Image: link
Description: The exquisite Seiko SARB033 is powered by the premium Seiko 6R15 caliber self-winding movement that can also be hand wound and hacked. It is the same caliber that powers most of the Seiko Prospex line of watches. The movement has a generous 50 hour power reserve. The case has a fine brushed finish and the black dial sports luminous hands and silvertone hour markers. A date display is shown at the 3 o'clock position. The stainless steel bracelet has a deployant clasp with a dual push-button release. A scratch resistant sapphire crystal is used along with an exhibition back that allows you to view the movement in action. Water resistant 100 meters. This is definitely a luxury range watch that is available at an affordable price. An excellent timepiece for sure.
This is my current watch, I have no desire for a huge faced watch, I don't want it to be metal. I am looking for an upgrade for this watch, functional, digital display, durable, reliable and with a nice simple clean look. Date and time are really the only features that are required, a stop watch feature would be a bonus.
I'm sure this isn't a watch that most here enjoy but I love my current watch, I just want to upgrade it in style and durability. Sometimes this watch will reset and I don't know why, I suspect it gets bumped and or it's just low quality.
https://www.amazon.com/Casio-W800H-1AV-Classic-Sport-Watch/dp/B001AWZDA4
To add to that as well, these are equivalent to Chippewa's more "luxury" level line-up of service boots which make use of better materials than their entry level Apaches, which themselves are great boots and can often not be found for much cheaper than $120.
To summarize, this is a good deal.
Also, great username.
That's a pretty beautiful watch for $135, don't think you'll get much better than that for under $150-200.
EDIT: Might suggest checking out these as well over on Amazon:
Invicta, black face, steel band, auto watch, ~$80
or
Invicta, blue face, steel band, auto watch, ~$75
I was looking into buying some Iron Rangers. I can get Copper ones for cheaper than on Amazon at a store nearby, but I think they only have Copper. I can't decide if I want Copper or Amber - the copper pair I tried on looks lighter than it does on Amazon, and I'd like a darker boot since I don't have dark brown shoes. Does anyone know how the Coppers looks like after some wear and tear and care (e.g. the red wing leather dressing)?
I actually just purchased (still on the first week) a Seiko 5 SNZG15 and absolutely love it so far. It's slightly larger than the SNK809 (42mm for the SNZG15 vs 37mm for the SNK809), so that might factor into your decision. Here's the Amazon link. It's a gorgeous watch, looks even better in person.
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNZG15-Automatic-Stainless-Steel/dp/B006I22GT2
Welcome aboard and excellent choice of watch! 11.6 is going to be the case thickness. Their website doesn't list it directly, but Amazon and Jomashop both have the band width listed as 20mm. This is one of the most common widths thankfully so you'll have plenty of options for straps. Hope this helps!
Invicta; Pro Diver 8926
Price: 70-80 dollars
Movement: Seiko NH35A movement w/ Handwinding & Hacking (Aka, seiko 4r36)
Style: Diver
Size: 40mm
Link: Amazon Black, Amazon Blue
Description: One of the few Invicta watches I'd actually recommend. Yes, it's a blatant homage of the Rolex Submariner, but you're still getting pretty decent build quality for what you're paying. It's a solid movement seen in watches three times it's price range and is a solid all around watch. I'd personally recommend removing the cyclops, mainly to make it less homage-like. It's also basically the only diver under 40mm at this price point. Actually, it might be the only automatic diver at it's price point period
This might fit pretty well. it's legible and since it's solar powered it shouldn't ever need a new battery. looks pretty easy to set too, at least there won't be a 60 page manual for it.
edit:didn't read all of the other post, he already picked something else.
I would recommend sticking to brands like Casio, Timex, Citizen, or Orient. Brands like Sturhling, Invicta, Nixon, Fossil etc. aren't quite as good quality and frankly won't be too well received here, not that you should care too much what other people think. Citizen makes really good pieces in that price range, check out these:
