I only recommend Cocktail Kingdom or Barfly tools to pros who use them hard and can justify spending the money. I have stainless tools, of lesser quality, that I've used hard for 30 years. They still work as good as they did when new. I suppose a good analogy is automobiles. You can buy yourself a Toyota. It's affordable, reliable and does pretty much everything most of us ask of it. You can also get yourself a new BMW or Benz. Are the German cars nicer? Sure! But you pay for the luxury. The only things "Cocktail Kingdom" that I own are weighted tins that I purchased soon after they were released (many years ago). But I was Manhattan based and Cocktail Kingdom was the only brick and mortar store that actually carried weighted tins. Today, we have more options.

I know at least 6 pros who are very happy with this set @ <$40. You get the weighted tins, which is the biggest change in modern bartending. You also get a lifetime guarantee and Prime shipping. If you want one, you'll need to add a heavy-bottomed mixing glass for stirred cocktails, a Y-peeler and perhaps an OXO jigger and microplane. I suggest you save yourself some cash and put it towards ingredients. Otherwise, Barfly sells a decent kit for $171 that you'll still have to add to. Cocktail Kingdom is even more expensive.

TL/DR: The fancy tools aren't necessary at all. If you want the Cadillac of bar gear, however, go for it.

Alright, that we can work with, 20$ budget and no existing bar:

-only two tools are remotely important: shaker and jigger. The rest is pretty much irrelevant, and can be easily replaced with things you have at home. Even the jigger is fairly irrelevant, because it only needs to be precise to itself. Doesent matter if the 3cl mark is actually 3.2
So I'd recommend you take the 20$ and buy a decent shaker, and maybe a small one-sided jigger.

you don't really need a Hawthorne strainer and weird spoon an all that, to be honest i usually can't be bothered to use them when im making cocktails for myself and are not in a hurry. Those tools are made to speed things up at a bar, but aren't a necessity.

i recommend spending the money on ingredients rather than additional tools for now, if you find out you really like that particular kind of cocktail then you should develop the bar in that direction.

I used to have one of these. It comes with a wheel insert that really helps with mixing powder drinks, and I think it'd be very easy to clean. I don't know the true weight though.

u/craiclad · 1 pointr/cocktails

Ahhh perfect. This is exactly the type of criticism I was looking for. Do you think something like this would suit better? I couldn't find anything by bacardi on amazon.

u/BlendsAreMyFriends · 2 pointsr/kratom

I use these to mix my apple cider vinegar honey lemon juice and water drink. Works like a champ. Mine is only 20 oz and I've seen then smaller like 16 oz too.

u/turkeypants · 1 pointr/beer

That's called a shaker glass and wasn't even meant to be a beer glass originally. It evolved from being one half of a Boston Shaker, which allowed bartenders to mix and measure multiple cocktails in one go. Sometimes you still see them with measurement markings on the glass part.

Various people have opined about how it doesn't do much for the beer.

Apparently it became the de facto standard in the 80s because it is cheap and utilitarian. Stacks nicely. Demand better glasses!

u/Mistakk · 2 pointsr/Whatisthis

I think the fact that it is a cocktail strainer like /u/CapnMerica56 said makes the "Cheers" in your comment pretty funny

Here is a link to a set that has one - it fits inside the glass or shaker for straining

Yes! I've encountered this as well...I recommend a parisian style shaker they tend to be smaller..I personally use this one in a high volume cocktail bar without any issues. shaker

u/FunkIPA · 2 pointsr/cocktails

Well, depending on the build, I can fit 2 to 3 cocktails in the koriko shaker tin set from cocktail kingdom. I don’t know what you mean by “multiple” though.

Something like this though, could shake maybe 6-8 cocktails, I dunno. I personally would rather use a regular shaker (or two).

u/ruphuselderbeer · 2 pointsr/ketochow

I wonder if you could source a branded one of these then. Ello Splendid 20OZ Glass Shaker Bottle, Mint, 20 Oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0724Z7ZZP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_aeZVBbFV1RC4M

Here's the OXO strainer. Sucks that it's so expensive there. It's $7 US here, and I do prefer it to a standard Hawthorne, however the standard will certainly get the job done.

I also prefer a French shaker myself. That's certainly a matter of preference. I feel like I'm seeing more shakers other than the standard Boston popping up at high end bars these days, so I'm not alone.

I don't really like the cobbler shakers. When they get cold the cap freezes on, turning them into an unreliable version of a French shaker anyway (still have to worry it might just fly off when you're shaking) so why not just go French?

u/FrobroX · 1 pointr/Huel

I remember seeing a sale on this one from Contigo a couple weeks back. Not on sale anymore, but worth a look. I don't have ant personal experience to say how it is.

That was my thinking, soon as someone hears I tend bar I get another shaker or a bar key/wine key that isn't my preference.

But last year I did get a kick ass Mason jar shaker that was unique.

I think like 3-4 random bitters would be a cool treat for anyone, if you don't like them take them in to work and just use em up.

u/krails · 2 pointsr/SpaceXMasterrace

Yep I bought one shortly after Starship was announced. It’s actually a decent shaker too. $32 on Amazon.

I used to be a vodka-soda-extra-lime person. But after some tweaking, I ended up with something more flavorful and more refreshing.

1oz vodka

.5 oz lime juice

Fill the rest of the glass with flavored soda water. I prefer either La Croix cranberry or (a cheaper and slighly more flavorful) Canada Dry Raspberry Seltzer Water.

Also, just throwing this out there.

It's pretty cheap and has turned my home bartending game around. You can use it for more than just vodka (though that's what I primarily use it for). You can infuse your booze with almost any flavor and it works really well. Highly suggested for anyone who is missing the sugary cocktails and wants to elevate their more plain, lower calorie drinks. I just spent Sunday adding ginger-peach-apricot vodka to iced tea and sitting on my balcony in the sun.

u/chalks777 · 4 pointsr/cocktails

amazon has these: Orange boston shaker, swirly orange shaker, more swirly orange.

ninja edit: Oh, didn't realize you said plastic. Here's a mini one.
