The sides are very hot, so if you have children make sure it's out of their reach. Also, the top gets nice and warm so it's convenient if you want to warm up some challah for shabbos lunch ;)

Amazon has 100 cup coffee urns for sale at under 100 bucks. That's over 6 gallons isn't it? It might take an hour to boil but would save money on propane. this one is even insulated:

That was my setup for a while, but I got fed up with how long it took to come up to temperature. Do yourself a favor and upgrade the crockpot to a coffee percolator (I got this one when it was on sale for $30).
I would guess it was a big coffee urn, like people rent for weddings. Something like this but just on a larger (and maybe home/custom manufactured) scale.

Idk how common it is. I personally used to work at a Dunkin Donuts and that's what we called it. It's not a pot, it's the large container with a spout that holds a lot of coffee.
