Welcome home Kalani!
And I don't really have a hometown. I've moved so much that no place really feels like I'm 'from' there. I am rather fond of my new town though. It's just got a nice but not overwhelming southern hospitality feeling.
And I actually have a request this week if I win! Usually I like to be surprised but I'd love this Seth MacFarlane album cause I've been wearing out my phone battery trying to play it while I'm in the car.
The best true binaural recording I've ever heard is
Cyberorgasm. its basically phone-sex in different situations, but the recording of it is AMAZING.
There is a "skit" where you are in a chair and a dominatrix walks around you in heels. you hear her behind you on the hard wood floor and its like its really happening...Its freaky..and cool.
Listen to it with good headphones (Grado Sr60 myself) and you'll be feeling good or uncomfortable (depending on where you are) in moments.
I looked for it to link on amazon, its out of print - however I KNOW you can get it via torrents and such.
http://www.amazon.com/Cyborgasm-Lisa-Palac/dp/B000005HOV/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1253611812&sr=1-5
I'm a student too and I'm only in my first year but I'm also freaked out about this ;~;
Thanks for the contest o:
I'm not a huge fan of his film appearances, but I'm definitely a big fan of his stand-up comedy. Maybe you should start out there and it might give you a better appreciation of his talent.
Live at The Purple Onion (DVD 2007)
Watts' "Why Shit So Crazy" cd and dvd (which features Fuck Shit Stack) of live shows from around the Brooklyn area is absolutely genius. He's very absurd in his comedy, forthright in his lifestyle, and insightful and genuine with a lot of his songs. I also found his flow of conscious style and wordplay/association to be quite artistic. With a lot of playful editing and visual stylization, I think he really invites a deeper look at the material and it's potential meaning as a work of art, and boy is there a lot with which to work.
I rave, but I do think it's that good and have spent a lot of time watching it and thinking about it. To be honest, it's a wonderful stoner film (or while tripping) as well because of the combination of comedy, music, visuals, and shortish 53 minute length, although by no means exclusively so. I believe it's up on youtube in parts if you do a little searching. I obviously recommend supporting the artist--I did--so here's an amazon link, both of them together for $11:
http://www.amazon.com/Why-So-Crazy-CD-DVD/dp/B003EVQA8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324247594&sr=8-1
There are tons. First, there's only 1 actual album, Grace. Other official releases include:
Then there's a number of live CDs and DVDs that pretty much all have a cover song or two that isn't available elsewhere. Beyond that there's probably another.. oh 40 or so different covers or very different versions of his songs floating around the net. My Jeff extras folder has nearly a hundred tracks in it. Highlights for me include the four songs by Tim Buckley, his father, that he performed at a [tribute event](http://fuelfriends.blogspot.com/2006/07/jeff-buckley-channels-his-father-st.html(, his reading of the Poe poem Ulalume from the cd Closed on Account of Rabies, and Satisfied Mind (though they pretty much all are wonderful).
I just spent all last week compiling about 24 hours worth of Christmas tunes! My favorite albums are:
And personal favorite songs are:
>...she only holds on to it because she is afraid of the concept of no God.
Okay, she needs this:
Julia Sweeney's double-album Letting Go of God.
The way you're describing what your mother is going through sounds exactly like what Julia Sweeney went through on her path to atheism.
Letting Go of God is filled with humor and humanity, and Sweeney really makes a strong, passionate case in favor of a rational, scientific worldview that's filled with wonder, surprise, and joy.
Someone took the trouble of transcribing the entire thing and posting it online as text. Have a look at it and you'll see what I mean.
Seconded. Great choice of songs, played well and fun to listen to. Another good one from recent years is Aimee Mann's "Drifter in the Snow."
A couple more recent compilations I like are Psych-Out Christmas, "A John Waters Christmas" and "Where Will You Be Christmas Day?".
The all-time greats everyone should have are Phil Spector, Vince Guaraldi, Bing Crosby and a rockin' oldies compilation of your choice.

I would suggest The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb. Robert Crumb was an underground comix (with an "x") artist who became popular in the 60's, because he was very counter-culture. It's not an atheist book; in fact, I think Crumb intended it to be some sort of homage to the Bible. But, whereas every other illustrated Bible has sought to polish the stories through their imagery, Crumb presents a very gritty, "warts and all" type of work, and it can be a little jarring at times. Intelligent folks will get the message loud and clear, though, how bizarre the Old Testament really is.
Lighter fare is Julia Sweeney's Letting Go of God. Sweeney is a former SNL comedian, and this comes from her one-person show of the same name. It's funny stuff, and it shows how so many Christians have just glossed over the history of the faith without thinking critically about it. It's also available on YouTube.
Couldn't find the printed version so I got the audiobook. It's very, very good. By the way, is your granny familiar with Julia Sweeney? Tell her that I recommend Letting go God. It's hilarious, I'm sure she will enjoy it. (Tell her she can find it on torrent sites and such)
Could have been a straight steal... we'll never know. In any case, if you are a stand-up comedy fan definitely check out the Bobcat (comeback?) album linked above... great stuff.
Edit: link to album since the link above is just a picture
Fave Albums
In 1991 I was 11 and into classic rock. I was not allowed to go see Oliver Stone's movie The Doors. So, my parents seeing that I was pretty disappointed agreed to buy me the soundtrack.
After listening to this I went a did some research on 3 three songs from this album I wasn't all that familiar with. Tracks 9, 10 and 11
Heroin - Velvet Underground and Nico
Carmina Burana
Stoned Immaculate - Jim Morrison
Coincidentally My parents had a bunch of classical albums in the basement from my grandmother and they had Carmina Burana on vinyl and I gave that a listen. That didn't really do it for me so the next trip to the mall, I head to the book store and buy An American Prayer by Jim Morrison. I was was familiar with Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild side, but had never heard of The Velvet Underground. I head to the music shop and pick up Loaded by Velvet Underground
Loaded really touched me, 2 songs in particular
Who loves the Sun
I Found a Reason
All of this really coincided with the beginning of grunge and the sound that really defines me as a person. The next 3 years of my adolescence was defined by the music I listened to.
1991, 1992, 1993
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevermind
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_Against_the_Machine_(album)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undertow_(Tool_album)
The song Heroin was the impetus for the change in my opinion of what good music was. Thanks Lou.
I own the album. It's really good. Surprisingly, really really good.
Edit: To introduce the album to a friend, I played track 4 for her and asked what she thought. Response- "I think it's unfair that a William Shatner song just made me cry."
Ahh - but the album he did with Ben Folds (Has Been) http://www.amazon.com/Has-Been-William-Shatner/dp/B0002RUPH4 is outstanding. The cover of Pulp's "Common People" always makes me smile.
That joke formed the title of one of his comedy albums of a live set he did, which is pretty good:
I Don't Mean to Insult You, But You Look Like Bobcat Goldthwait
One bit I remember from it had Bobcat talking about filming that scene from Blow when Johnny Depp and Paul Reubens got him to sample their completely pure product. Him and Depp were comparing recent run-ins with the law (Depp with some Drunk & Disorderly thing, Goldthwait for accidentally starting a fire while doing a guest spot on the Tonight Show), and they were like, “Probation. You?” “Community Service.” Then they look at Reubens: “Anywaaaayyysss...”
> Watch the series on YouTube - it's entertaining.
Or, even better, support the artist by purchasing the DVD or CD.
Some of that (guess which parts!) was from his album I don't mean to insult you but you look like Bobcat Goldthwaith
Some good stuff on there.
There's a DVD you can get of the originals, and there are a bunch of pop stars who have done covers. The R&B version of "Mr. Morton" is really good (and I'm not a big fan of hip-hop or R&B).
Found it. Rock it, Skee-Lo.
Edit: Found where these come from: Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks from Atlantic Records. Most of the tracks have been put together with the original cartoons on YouTube as well. I'm so impressed with how well some of these were done.
I remember someone had put out a binaural erotic CD.
I thing it was called Cybergasm or something like that.
I used to have it and the effect was pretty good.
Particularity the French girl that was whispering in your ear.
You could almost feel her breath.
I remember there was a dominatrix scene, a lesbian scene and a few others.
Edit: The one I had was called CYBORGASM Vol 1

Remember to suggest for next week. Also who would like a RMVF Playlist? And for those Weird Al fans like myself out there his new Album "Mandatory Fun" just came out, you can pick up a Physical Copy on Amazon or a Digital Copy on iTunes.
The "greatest hits" album is Strictly Commercial and that's how I got started. Spotify now has a gigantic collection of his work, and I would wholeheartedly recommend that any rock/jazz musicians try out a few of his songs. He was an incredible composer and band leader.
You should check out A John Waters Christmas. Not necessarily new songs, but great Christmas songs that nobody has heard of.
Amazon

CD Baby

Take your pick! I'm pretty sure both are offering MP3 downloads with the CD, Amazon through their AutoRip thing and CD Baby sends a code.
I would wager that "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" wouldn't be that great in metal?
Seriously, I think it's because a lot of Christmas music was written back when they used the genre that was popular at the time. Then, it was "covered" into a new genre, etc... people tend to want Christmas music to be something they can sing to, stores want it to be non "threatening and comforting." Religions are picky about what they like, and a lot of Christmas music is non-secular. Jazz and easy listening is more soothing.
If you are looking for alternatives, try searching amazon "genre and christmas music" and see what pops up. I found this punk rock album.
I can't stand his TV shows or anything he writes...I am only interested in his vocal work. He was very good in Hellboy II: The Golden Army as Johann, the vapor guy in a suit.
And I bought his CD.
Lets not forget about his first cd as well. It comes with a dvd with his original Comedy Central presents and some old music videos.

I don't mean to insult you, but you look like Bobcat Goldthwait
Bobcat Goldthwait actually named his CD, "I don't mean to insult you, but you look like Bobcat Goldthwait"
Apparently the album is released on july 25nd in my country (Germany)....So I just bought the MP3 version for 8€, which is already available.
Also "The Essential WAY" album is pretty rad!
You're in luck, I present to you Mandatory Fun

CD and DVD for $10. I've had it for a while. It's good stuff.
Don't call it a comeback.
No, really. Don't. He's doing a benefit concert to help Thomas' nephew, not doing another movie or anything. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome, but this is only slightly more of a return than his CD of klezmer music.
The easiest "read" for introducing atheism to a Christian is probably a non-read -- Julia Sweeney's Letting Go of God. It is available as CD audio or on DVD video. I have both, and actually prefer her audio performance. The first 15 minutes of it are available as a TED Talk.
