Just get a portable stereo. If you really need it to fit into a briefcase, yes you can use car speakers. The sound quality won't be that great though because the stereo separation will suffer. The bottom line is you'll get much better sound out of a typical stereo. Not that it's impossible to get good sound out of something smaller but you'll need a more powerful amp and a nice solid construction that won't absorb the sound. You're going to want to re-enforce the construction of the case with thick fiber-board or a pre-made PVC speaker box that fits
Make sure the box with the speakers is sealed. I wouldn't bother using a car stereo to power the speakers because you'll have to also buy a converter to convert the voltage to 12v, high amp that the stereo is built to run on and they are generally not cheap (car stereos or the converter). Instead, do a Google search for 'stereo amplifier kit' that will run right of off line voltage. It will probably still use a transformer plug (those big black box plugs) If you're comfortable working with circuitry, I'd try to get the line voltage unregulated right into the box so you can power your other stuff with it.
If your goal is to have a good quality sound system and save money, you'll end up spending less for a manufactured stereo like I liked up top. There's a lot of stuff about home-made amps on Make Magazine If you want something really unique, check out the Tube Amp guide on there. That would pretty cool to open a brief case to see a bunch of old glass tube transistors in it.
Don't know what to search for. I'm completely new to this and I'm having a hard time finding what I want because I don't know what it's called.
I'm in the market for a high-end stand-alone all-in-one wireless "stereo" (?). I want to be able to play music from my computer (located elsewhere in my home) via wifi?, bluetooth?, and at the very least, aux from a cell phone/tablet. I would prefer if the entire unit was one piece with only one wire for plugin. Doesn't have to play CDs. Something that looks really cool would be a definite bonus. Cool ambient light and/or glass/metal preferable. Budget: no more than ~$1,500.00.
What is what I'm looking for called? If I knew what these were called I'm sure I could do more research for myself. Searching for bookshelf stereos has been fruitless. Most of them have detachable speakers, and are generally too highschool for my tastes. I want something that will look super slick on a bookshelf in a classy sitting room. But I also want it to be functional with minimal wires.
Maybe this isn't the place to post this, but the audio quality isn't all that important to me (though I expect if I'm paying a significant amount that the quality is at least passable). Looks/functionality more important.
What should I be looking for? Recommendations? Cheers!!
Something like these: What are these called?

Actually, that Polk from the third link looks about perfect. What are these things called and can anyone recommend a super nice one? Cheers!
I had this problem so many times. I hated taking 8 AM classes and I had to do it several times over the years and it sucked every time. But I did learn of a few tricks that may help...
First, I'm assuming you have either an iPhone or Android phone, there are several apps that work really well for people like us. I personally have an Android phone so some of the apps I may have used, may not be available if you have an iPhone but I'll post links for both. Check out these links and try these apps. If one doesn't help, move on and try another.
If you want to get an actual clock/alarm that doesn't use your phone, there are some options...
First Vinyl Setup Help
Hey guys, I have recently been really interested in getting into the vinyl scene and had a couple of questions about my set up. Here is what I have so far:
Turntable: Technics sl-j3
Speakers: Sony MHCEC709iP Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System
Questions:
Thank you so much in advance for your time in reading and responding, I really appreciate it. Have a wonderful rest of your day!
Looking for a cheap shelf top stereo system to replace my grandmother's that finally kicked the bucket. Nothing fancy, doesn't need big speakers, just needs to be able to play her old cd's for the holidays. Hoping to find something $50-$75 because my grandparents will barely use it outside of holidays when people come over.
Considering something like this just because of the price but I don't want to get her something too cheap. Honestly if I could just find the stereo/cd player without the speakers for a reasonable price that would be amazing because then I could just go get some JBLs or those $40 monoprice ones and cut the wire myself giving her some actually decent speakers for the price everyone else is charging.
I've also seen this Insiginia system, I know bestbuys house brand which typically means shit, but it has some decent reviews. More than I want to spend but for a simple AiO system I could just grab and go with it would be nice.
So yeah let me see what you guys can find/suggest, I figured this would be way quicker and cheaper than it is turning out to be when she first told me about it but everything now is all about the connectivity/iPhones and it's just way more than she needs.

edit - forgot to mention this philips one I had open in another tab; seems like my best bet so far
I bought this one when it was on sale:
HeimVision Sunrise Alarm Clock,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MZ2WFLJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I initially had a cheaper one for about a year that worked but it finally kicked the bucket. I personally love it (just the simulation in general) and this one Iโve linked is great because it syncs with your phone. The downside of that is I could in theory turn it off from my phone but I usually donโt. I keep it on a bookcase towards the foot of my bed so Iโm required to get up to turn it off and after I stand up I usually turn my overhead light on and it gets me moving. I personally think itโs been great, I really feel like Iโve woken up naturally. The general way it works is you set the time you want to wake up (say 5:30) and starting at 5 the light dimly comes on and progressively gets brighter. Then at 5:30 the sound you pick starts going too. I almost always wake up before the sound starts.
Itโs very bright though so it depends if you live/sleep with someone it may not work for you if you do not wake up at the same time.
The invisible hand of the free market has already designed and built this product. It sits on the shelf right now, waiting for you to buy it. (Amazon) and (Walmart) are two vendors among many.
I bought it and found it 100% effective. You could also read the customer reviews on websites for more user feedback. Here's an excerpt from the first review at Amazon:
> However, I generally don't use the audible portion of the alarm at all. The clock comes with a little white pod, a little bigger than a cell phone, perhaps, but round like a saucer. It had a long, sturdy cord that plugs into the clock itself. You can put it under your mattress or in your pillow case. I find this the coolest, least annoying, most reliable way to wake up I've yet run across. Way better than lights that slowly turn on (they don't wake me up). The body seems hard wired to wake up fully alert when something nearby vibrates, but it isn't annoying like an alarm clock buzz.
> The vibration pod does not need to be plugged in for the clock and audible alarm to work, so if you don't like the vibration, you're not stuck with it.
> A word of caution: if you put the vibration pod in your pillowcase and the cord runs to the alarm clock, I could see potential for getting yourself wrapped up in it. Clearly it's not suitable for use with children, and if you toss and turn a lot, I would definitely think about the ramifications of the cord. The easy solution, of course, is to put it under your mattress. The vibration is strong enough that it will wake you either way, in my opinion
Much like already stated, a few plants or bright colors might add some contrast and definitely attract some eyes. Otherwise, amazing layout, love the room space, wish I had a room that big.
As for an alarm, I recommend using your phone, but if you're not into that (I know some people aren't), the cheapest alarm clock on Amazon will probably work. Although I'd recommend something with more squarish corners to match your PS4. This one looks pretty neat:
https://www.amazon.com/Mesqool-Digital-Dimmable-Projection-Charging/dp/B016QCTX7G/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1484665228&sr=8-11&keywords=alarm+clock
I'm assuming you are asking about a set of speakers (most likely 2-hence stereo). If you only want good Bass just get a powered sub! I'm kidding but realize you're questioning the audiophile sub-reddit here.
If you are talking about something like this:http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MHCECL99BT-Wireless-Music-System/dp/B00MO66IJU/ref=sr_1_5?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1426037868&sr=1-5
Then i can tell you your options are pretty limited and I have the previous model of these and although they are good (I paid $130). You can get much better sound out of a Lepai-20XX amp and Overnight Sensations for a bit more money.
You are probably best off getting http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Primus-Three-way-Floorstanding-Speaker/dp/B0046A8R3M/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1426038067&sr=1-1&keywords=infinity+primus
and something to drive them
Warning: Foul Language Ahead!
Yes. This was Fall of last year, and I don't recall exactly what the issue was, but I think the gist of it was that images and text I tried to use on our listing weren't propagating live. There were/are other sellers selling knockoffs I think that had made some changes to the listing (I really don't understand how it works, but I guess a 'product' is very difficult to actually 'own' even if you FUCKING OWN IT) which were really poor, but those were the features and images showing up on the actual live public listing.
Again, nightmare. Cannot believe how difficult it was to get NOTHING done. Every agent clearly just wanted the ticket to be done with.
I actually researched how to do this beforehand, and advice I got here on reddit boiled down to "put it in terms that will benefit amazon as well, if you can."
So initially I was really polite and nice and said, and part of my request was pointing out how an improved listing for this product would result in more sales, which would be good for both (client) and Amazon. It was only (weeks! of runaround) later that I let some of my impatience show and requested supervisors / etc.
Some of the problems with their system:
Nightmare. Hands down the absolute worst customer service experience of my entire life.
Ok, good now we are getting somewhere. Your options are going to be limited to non recommended gear. I'm talking soundbar, HTiB, or mini shelf system. I'm thinking the soundbar is going to be silly with a projector so I'm not going to even try for that option. The mini shelf system is good but can be very limited...they normally are only stereo (2.0) but some are 2.1 so it could work. I would look at these options
Sony Shelf System $170 2.1 setup with BT, remote ect. This should fit the bill and sound decent for movies.
LG HTiB $160 you'll need an bluetooth adapter but this could work.
Neither one of these options are great. You can't upgrade them and I'm not going to say they will sound good. The Sony will probably sound better than the LG but lacks surround sound.
Here: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-MHCEC719iP-Watts-Music-System/dp/B00EZGB4J6
The MDRs, they have the option to enable the bass boost while running via Bluetooth, not wired though. If you love bass as I do you will love them! Is like having a subwoofer in your ears. I love them!
There's a few reasonably simple options involving a smartphone. I'm going to assume you don't have one.
This will read mp3s from a USB stick, and play them through the speakers. It might be difficult to select your music.
This can play mp3s on a CD (so you could put all your Beatles or Metalica albums on one disk, and play them all at once), or on a USB stick.
Your computer is another option. Not ideal (it's probably not in the same room as you want to relax and listen to music in), but an option. Some good speakers will improve things.
If you have a simple Android phone, and you have a TV with a HDMI port, you can put the music on your phone and play it on your TV with a Chromecast. Stick that into your TV, and use the Google Music app on your phone to select music and play on the TV.
Yeah I would definitely make people aware that the only audio outs are optical and bluetooth and the bluetooth part can be temperamental. I was counting on 3.5mm out. I even moved my 2.1 LG Stereo CM4550 to my bedroom to use as external speakers. And the TV is still having issues connecting to it. So when it can't even reliably connect to their own products, you know it's an issue. I'm pretty sure it's a software issue as well since resetting the TV allows it to successfully connect. It's just if I then turn off the tv and try to reconnect the next day, it won't connect. It will search and see the device but fail to connect. And yes, the LG is on the bluetooth mode. I've done extensive troubleshooting. I'm a Software Developer so I'm a more advanced (read: not completely moronic) user.
I just looked at the 940E specs on Sony's site and it says that for headphone out it has
>1 (Side/Hybrid with Headphone and Subwoofer Out)
So it looks like it does have 3.5mm out. Can you confirm it does have headphone out? Because with my LG I saw a headphone port and assumed it was an out port. It's 3.5mm in. That makes no sence to me because why would anyone want to go out of their way to play something on the crappy internal speakers?
Here is a picture of my bedroom. Yes thatโs my kitty sleeping on my laptop. Tvs are a 40โ Changhong LED, 65โ LG OLED, and 48โ Samsung LCD. I usually use one for watching Netflix or Hulu and the other to simultaneously play PS4. I rarely use the Changhong. Probably should move it to my family room.
Looking for an affordable boombox that can play CDs, as well as take aux input (or bluetooth if not too much more expensive) as well as play tapes
I looked up boomboxes on amazon that take aux and they all have mixed reviews, highest avg. rating is 4 stars
CDs and tapes are a must, as well as good sound ( more powerful/better sound than this )
price range: $30-60
willing to spend more money on adding on to it later! just looking for something to start with.
edit: would a "stereo shelf system" be a better option for audio quality? I wouldn't want to spend much more than 70 or 80 to start with, I wonder if that's heresy on here, but I just want a significant upgrade to the aforementioned bluetooth speaker, that can play CDs and tapes. possibly looking at this ... am I way off base here?
My left speaker is currently pooping out on me, so I'd like to find something to replace my computer audio system. I've been using the TEAC MC-DX32i for what seems to be the better part of a decade, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit for what it is. It has a really nice interface to switch between cd, speakers, and headphones, so I'd like to find something similar to it. Unfortunately, I'll be going to college in the fall, so I won't have the most amount of money to spend nor can I spare a lot of desk space (subwoofer is not a priority). I have a vague sense that I should be looking for monitors and an audio interface, but beyond that, I am so overwhelmed with information I don't know what to do. Any advice as to what I should be looking for is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
JBL LSR308 is better quality and louder if you look at the conversion of watts into Db between the two.
But I think the LG's (Are you looking at these?: http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-CM4550-Subwoofer-Bluetooth/dp/B010XHCQGK) you are looking at have 3 speakers... plus it comes with the main receiver.
You will probably still need the main receiver, or a central computer/laptop. If you already have one of those (I assume you have something figured out if you DJ) then buy those good JBL speakers. If not then I guess you could skimp and get the little LGs (but you get the whole system, which is good).
Have you looked into SONOS? Pricey but worth the investment... hit up the alumni if you can- good luck!
>that can just make everyday life a little nicer, more luxurious etc.
If this is the goal, you can upgrade something he currently has and uses frequently. One way to think about this is to do an inventory of his typical day -- what items does he interact with or consume all the time? So, if he wakes up pretty early and relies on an alarm clock, you could get him a smart sunrise alarm clock or one that projects on the ceiling.
If he drinks coffee, you could upgrade his coffee bean grinder or get him a French press. (I like the Bodum brand, which is top rated on Wirecutter.) Speaking of, I find the Wirecutter website to be a good source for upgrade ideas. I was going to suggest upgrading bed sheets, but that might go over budget and be hard to fit in a suitcase!
And etc. If there's a specific item you want to upgrade, feel free to come back and ask for suggestions!
Try an alarm clock that deaf people use: http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SB200ss-Alarm-Clock/dp/B000EX7LNM
I honestly have no idea on the intensity of this one or others, but they wake people up pretty well. My friend, who is deaf, has one and it would vibrate his entire bed and wake people up in the next room.
I'm thinking about upgrading and buying this stereo system. Is this a good buy? I'm don't want to spend more than $200, and this system looks like a good bet for the money.
I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to this sort of thing, so any help/advice would be much appreciated.

I had the same issue, but would be wide awake at night... Have you tried a sunset alarm clock?? It lights up and gets brighter until your actual alarm time, so it kinda replicates the sunrise. Mine has been amazing, and really helps me wake up and not feel as groggy throughout the day. My exact one is sold out, but here's a similar one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KHTG7SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3A3wCbJ67MSTS

You can turn off the sound. The vibrating part goes under your pillow and trust me, you'll wake up. But it won't wake up your partner which is awesome.
I will be starting my first teaching job in just a few weeks! I will be teaching art to middle schoolers, and would really love a radio for my classroom. I think my students will want to have some music (and so will I) as we work and create things.
I have this, the Sonic Alert an alarm for people who are hard of hearing that vibrates the bed, it's amazing! My boyfriend is deaf and he introduced me to them. You put the puck under your mattress or pillow. It shakes everything and unless you are on horse tranquilizers, you will wake up in the morning. I used to be the kind of person who would set several alarms all over their room, and still not wake up. My bf had the analog clock, which could not differentiate between AM & PM. I got the digital one while still in college (we lived 1.5 hours apart) and never missed a morning after that. I didn't need my mama to whoop my ass in the morning any more. ;)
Took the digital one with me when I moved out, it is still going strong 2+years later. I'm not affiliated with them, I never see this topic and am excited. I used to have a real problem. Your friend probably likes theirs a lot too!
Yeah, I wouldn't pay for a scan. If you want, go order an el-cheapo model from https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stoga-CAN-BUS-ENGINE-SCANNER-Diagnostic/dp/B005FOIC3I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1504119975&sr=8-4&keywords=code+reader+obd2
The better ones are ~$50 and display more info... but that is pretty much the cheapest and will let you see the codes out of your engine that caused the light to come on.

This would help, but I agree you probably shouldn't work morning jobs if it's hard for you to get up. I don't pick up shifts anymore, because I'm already working like 60 hours total between both jobs and close to burning out
Separate units are generally preferred if you care about quality. But if it doesn't matter much and you want an all-in-one, Onkyo and Denon have some OK ones:

https://www.amazon.com/Denon-D-M39S-Component-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B008PQAB3C/
I love this guy's ingenuity, awesome alarm.
This is one you can buy (it even has a little vibrator disc to shake your bed, woah)
Having a good and consistent sleep schedule is very important, especially as you get older. Good luck!
I dunno if vibration would work better than sound, but there are alarms for deaf and hearing impaired people. There's this little vibrator you put under your pillow and pretty much shakes you awake. I've never used one, but I had deaf occupants living in the room under me at college, and their version of snoozing it was putting the vibrator on their night stand. That thing would raise a racket.
And aww crap, I forgot to post a song this week.
My PLX-500 is currently just hooked up to my LG shelf stereo system. It has an RCA input, it's cheap, puts out big sound, and sounds good enough for me. :)
Or perhaps something like this. Seems interesting to me.
here ya go
bought my parents one of these last year and they love it
Here are my tips:
Beyond those, there are sleep disorders you can get checked out.
I have this myself: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EX7LNM/ref=oh_o04_s00_i00_details
anything by Sonic Alert is good.
There will be some effects from placing speakers in a cubby. Mostly from the port if the speaker is rear ported. The cubby will act as a port extension, changing the amount of bass and the sound coming from the speakers, often negatively. The best thing to do is to get front ported speakers like these KEF Speakers.
If you're planning on doing just 2.1, and not 3 or 5 channels, look into micro stereo receivers like this Yamaha. Otherwise, almost all surround AVRs comply with a form factor. Marantz makes a line of slim receivers, but they're still 17 in. wide by 14-20 in. deep.
For that price, you may have to look on the used market. This was the cheapest new buy I could find, and it comes with a 20 wpc amplifier section; so it will need some efficient speakers to perform at its best. You may find CD boomboxes as well, but they're likely to sound rubbish, especially as your grandfather's coming from his hi-fi.
I agree with the apnea conversation. You can also try foam ear plugs like cyclefreaksix mentioned and get a vibrating alarm that shakes your bed to wake you up.

Similar to the one someone else linked but this one has a couple other features I liked and looks more "adult".
Personally, I'm a fan of sunrise alarm clocks. The Phillips one is good, but pricey. I have this one currently, and it works fairly well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KHTG7SC
what would i be looking at for 2 decent speakers with a sub and a receiver in price??
and is this or something like this any good?

Vibrate yourself awake
I have a friend with one that practically shakes the house, and it's placed under his mattress.
What year is the EFF living in? The ability to read and reset fault codes by third party equipment has been the case for many a year or at least it has in the UK. Garages have had the equipment for at least a decade and as a consumer I can buy a fault code reader that'll work on pretty much any car made in the last 14 years for ยฃ11.65 on Amazon.
They use speaker wire so you're going to need an amp which is going to be most simple if plugged into a receiver. You can get them for cheap at recycling electronics stores or on Ebay/Craigslist. Yes, they're quite large.
If you want something relatively small here ya go

I had this problem when I worked nights and slept during the day. Very noisy apartment neighbors. I ended up getting some really good ear plugs, a large fan for some dull noise, and picked up an alarm clock for deaf people. It has a vibrator extension that goes under your pillow.
Once I started doing all that I never had an issue sleeping again. This would be easier/quicker than messing with your door.
Good luck.
This is the alarm clock I got:
https://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-Extra-Alarm-Shaker/dp/B000EX7LNM
So we're a rowing team and we practice inside a gymnasium on rowing machines(here's what they sound like, just to give you an idea), which generate a decent amount of noise when there's a bunch of them going at the same time. The system we used before was 2.1 system that was almost identical to this one. When we turned those all the way to the maximum and set our phone to max volume, it was usually loud enough.
or something like this for just a little more

Maybe go for an alarm clock for the hard of hearing? I used one for a while, and it worked. It has an attachment you put under your pillow and it vibrates really loud. Worth a try!

Something actually designed to go under your pillow and will not likely catch on fire.
Sonic Boom Alarm Clock
I was constantly waking up late and was getting to the point where I was getting in trouble at work. My co-worker suggested this clock and it works GREAT. You can opt for a loud alarm with variable pitch from high to low, you set the pitch, or a giant vibrator you place under the mattress that turns your bed into a vibro-bed to wake you up, or a combination of both. Honestly I only use the vibro-bed mode now as it wakes me up reliably yet does not shock the rest of the family with the air raid siren.
This amazon listing indicates the is a front aux input
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MHCEC919iP-Watts-Music-System/dp/B00EZGB4Y6
Saw a Sonic Alert was mentioned, I had the Sonic Alert SBD375ss and SB200ss, I didn't use the sound part of the alarm, just the vibrate portion of it. Both worked great for waking me up without making a bunch of noise. It's noticeable to anyone in the same bed.
SBD375ss wouldn't power on after two years. Tried swapping power adapters with a replacement, but no luck. Still have the SB200ss, but the original vibrating disc stopped working due to a short in the cable. So I just took the one from the SBD375ss. Amazon shows I bought the SB200ss 7 years ago.
Still have the alarm, but mainly just put lights on a timer as an alarm. I have the alarm and a cellphone as a backup. Sound was never really effective for me, unless it was really, really, loud. I seem to respond better to light and movement.

If you can spend this much 100% do it. Loud enough for basically any decent sized room and very durable

Get one of those.
They have a vibrating pad-thing that you put under your pillow. The alarm is mucho decibels as well, so should wake you up.
Sonic Boom Alarm Clocks is your best option. Most deaf people (and hearing people who are heavy sleepers) use this. It basically has a vibrating disk you can put either under your pillow or mattress, and it will shake the bed when the alarm go off. Optionally, you can hook it up to a lamp which will flash a few times instead, or even pair it together.
My brother has had some success with a bed-shaking alarm clock like this one.
I also have a hard time hearing/reacting to an alarm clock in the morning. When I lived in a dorm in college, I slept in the bottom bunk. I tied a piece of string dangling down from the bed-frame above me, long enough to hang right in front of my face while I slept. I rubber-banded my phone to the string and set the volume to maximum volume & vibrate. It went off right next to my face, little painful but it worked.
This here works for me. You put the bed shaker between the mattress and the box spring. If you turn the audible alarm off, it has the added advantage of not waking up your partner.
Buddy in college had this... Hated him, but never ever had a problem getting up... http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SB200ss-Alarm-Clock/dp/B000EX7LNM
I had similar issues in the past with sleeping through alarms and tardiness, so I bought one of these. It's been 3 years, and it's still doing its job!
You could look into a alarm clock for deaf people, it shakes the bed.
Such as: http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SB200ss-Alarm-Clock/dp/B000EX7LNM
Sonic Boom Alarm Clock
Still use alarm clocks, just one that vibrate instead of buzzing. The vibrating part is usually on a cord so that it can be placed under the pillow. See also https://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SB200ss-Vibrating-Shaker/dp/B000EX7LNM
Disclaimer : I am not deaf myself.
This is an alarm clock that has an attachment that shakes the whole bed. It has both a loud beeping audio alarm and the shaker, and you can use one or both. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EX7LNM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_l1teAbPE5YGFK
Try this little fella. I had a similar problem when I was deployed back in the day. Are you getting too much or too little PT? That can mess with your sleep cycles if you vary it too much. Also, ask your squad leader or platoon sergeant if you can try the night shift, you might be able to find a shift that more naturally fits your circadian rhythm.
If it's your first deployment, especially if it's one of your first real times being away from home, you're going to hit a point where you realize that you really don't want to be there. It's ok, that's natural and it happens. The problem is when your not wanting to be there interferes with your ability to Soldier up, drive on and get your ass to work. Just focus on doing your time and taking your lumps, the deployment can't last forever, even though it's going to feel like it.
Keep on keepin on, troop.
look at what deaf people use for alarm clocks, this one here would shake you right out of your bed
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EX7LNM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1451814356&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=sonic+bomb+alarm+clock&dpPl=1&dpID=31InxIClGtL&ref=plSrch
I use ear plugs because I sleep during the day, and I get paranoid I won't wake up. I use the alarm clock I linked as a just in case. I never have to actually let it go off any more, but it makes me feel better to know it will if I should happen to sleep through all three of my phone alarms.
I've actually got the volume on mute on the alarm clock. I just use the vibration pad.
Get a vibrating alarm clock. They shake the bed like an actual earthquake and don't stop until you shut them off. It's not comfy. You cannot sleep through them. There is no "jingle jangle", it's an earthquake + a screaming BUH-BUNK BUH-BUNK BUH-BUNK (if you put the sound alarm on max volume).
I'm deaf at night because I take my implants out, so I use this alarm. I think the first time we tested it out, I actually fell out of bed in surprise. I use this one but there's dozens of options out there now.
You could also get "Clocky", the alarm clock that runs and hides, so you have to get out of bed and hunt it down to shut it off.
Get him one of these options, tell him to set it one time only, and test it on a day he doesn't have work. But honestly, if he refuses and/or just goes back to setting dozens of alarms over a three-hour timespan, tell him to sleep on the couch until he's willing to work with you to find an alternative that doesn't ruin your sleep.
This thing will fuck your world up in the morning. Try to outsleep it. I fucking dare you.
My dad's deaf but I'm a heavy sleeper so I borrowed his alarm clock once and had to get one for myself because it was so effective:
Sonic boom with bed shaker
If a normal alarm clock doesn't wake you up, you might look into getting yourself one designed for the Deaf. That way, you wouldn't have to ask your NMom to wake you - because apparently, it is such a hardship for her...
alarms in another room. alarms that move. puzzle alarm clocks. or a really loud vibrating alarm clock
I have some suggestions but don't depend on supplements, only use them for emergencies or kinks in your schedule, and never take more than one sleep aid at a time. Magnesium is just a general vitamin, so it's fine. Obviously the goal is your own body clock, not 'a clock made out of drugs.' I'm not sure if your job helps keep your wake-up cycle regular but I'm assuming you came here because your own natural rhythm isn't working for you. Better than any supplement or drug will just be waking up at the same time every day- yes booboo even on the weekends.
Definitely Block Blue Light: Like everyone else is saying this needs to be done on ALL devices. Phone and computer (get a program called f.lux, for mac and pc) and TV if you can figure out how. Otherwise you never produce your own melatonin- AND you might keep making cortisol. Make sure your LIGHT BULBS in your house are warm and orange/yellow, think 'SUNSET,' none of that bright white mortician LED bullshit they keep selling now. I use night lights after sun down.
Wake Up With The Same Amount of Sunlight: Once your eyes detect high frequency blue/sunlight, your body will make cortisol to wake you up. I don't want to wake up at DAWN so I keep mine half closed with the same amount of space open for a strong sliver of light to greet me. Keep the blinds closed and you won't get this, or as much. You'll feel groggy and unrested. If you don't have access to sunlight, you'll need to get an alarm clock that mimics it with growing light in your face.
Melatonin: Not only is melatonin a good idea, but you want to take the SMALLEST dose you can find, otherwise you'll screw up your own melatonin system and make both your own and the drug ineffective. Don't ask me why but most supplements are 5 mg when they should be 1 mg or less. Melatonin is also a really powerful antioxidant, it's kind of like a facial for your sleeping brain.
Magnesium: you really can't go wrong with taking more Magnesium (you'll know when you've taken too much bc you'll shit yourself), most americans are deficient.
"Magnesium plays a part in regulating GABA, a neurotransmitter that is made in the brain. Low levels of GABA have been linked to chronic pain, depression, anxiety and even epilepsy. GABA imbalance has also been implicated in panic disorder and sleep disturbances, according to health expert Dr. Josh Axe." It is also a natural anti-inflammatory that should also reduce symptoms of chronic pain, restless legs, and other ailments you might have, and will even help your digestion.
Valerian: Another "natural" sleep aid is Valerian root, a plant which is believed to mimic adenosine, aka the opposite of taking caffeine. Usually if you've had an active day, adenosine builds up and your brain measures this to make you sleepy- but you might not have enough if you just have an office job. I've found it in liquid herb or tea form. It smells AWFUL. I prefer the tea. This one really knocks you out, but you can build tolerance fast, so I'd save it for your most restless nights.
My uncle is a sleep doctor, I'm a neuroscience grad and I went from the most chaotic schedule ever to just naturally waking up at 8 am. I use blue light filters on everything and occassionally take melatonin or valerian for sleepless nights.
Is the roommate turning off the alarms before you wake up? Or are your alarms going off and he is turning them off?
Currently I am using a sonic-boom alarm clock which also has a vibration function to wake you up (the alarm clock is designed for people who are deaf or have poor hearing) As long as you only use the vibration function, it should not bother your roommate.

Put a lock on your door.
Take the sheets and pillows off the bed.
Set a quiet alarm. Try this vibrating alarm clock that you put under your mattress.
ProTip: If they're letting 'friends' crash in your room without your consent then I'm guessing other sketch things are happening too. Lock your shit up or risk losing it.
Try the Screaming Meanie. Truck drivers use it to wake up because their sleep schedules and pretty much everything about truck driving makes it both very difficult and very important to wake up. It has the added bonus of being portable.
There's also the Sonic Boom Bedshaker Alarm Clock, which is made my a manufacturer of alarm clocks for deaf people. It wakes you up by vibrating your bed and, optionally, beeping really loudly (not as horrible as the meanie though, and more precise volume adjustments.) I have one of these and it works great!
I've also seen the SmartShaker, which is a Bedshaker that connects to your phone via Bluetooth. Personally haven't tried it and I doubt that something that runs on batteries could shake me awake, however, but it could be worth a try.
If you have trouble with going back to bed after waking up to an alarm or turning off alarms in your sleep, I recommend getting an app that requires you to take pictures or scan barcodes. If you need the phone's ringer to be louder for the alarm, try hooking it up to a speaker.
You might also consider getting an old fashioned [Analogue Alarm Clock](
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00PD38UDI/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1448166430&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=sonic+boom+alarm+clock). Those fuckers are loud and percussive and and don't have a snooze button. There's nothing like actual metal clanging together to wake you up in the morning.
If you have some money to spend, maybe a Sunlight simulation alarm would work for you. It simulates the gradual rising of the sun, but at whatever time you need the sun to rise and without having to leave your blinds open at night, with street lights bothering you and such.
Finally, I've found that the very best way for me to wake up is for my husband (or anybody really) to bring me a cup of tea. He can get still-mostly-asleep me to sit up and take the tea, and then I have to wake most of the way up to avoid spilling hot liquid all over myself, and then I fully wake up as I drink it. Obviously, this one is dependent on living with another person and having morning schedules that work together, which may not work for you.
Anyways, as a fellow heavy sleeper, I give you all I know about not sleeping through being a functioning member of society. :)
