Fun, thanks for hosting the scavenger hunt!

  1. Something Blue: These journals are so beautiful, and I just thought I would start the scavenger hunt out with something simple and beautiful. Is that too corny of a reason to put them on here?
  2. Summer: Summer reminds me that I will soon be in a place with sun constantly radiating down and burning my retinas. We're all gonna need some sunglasses.
  3. Unusual Food-Related Item: Kawaii Squishies are super cute, smell like freshly baked bread (or cream soda), and are shaped like foods! I had a lot of wiggle room with this category, and while I have tons of things about food in my WLs, I just think these are great to pass out to stressed friends, as well.
  4. Gift Someone Else: A Bidet for the Fiancé Kind of a silly one, but my fiancé loves bidets. I've always wanted to get him one, and so this is my ultimate "I love you" gift for him. I actually thought about getting it for him and calling it his engagement ring, in response to the one he just got me. Do you think it would make him laugh?
  5. Book!: The book Lab Girl by Hope Jahren has gotten a lot of great press, and it seems very relevant to any woman in a demanding science-related field. I think it would be an interesting, and hopefully inspiring, read.
  6. Less Than a 1$: Somehow this shampoo brush is only $.01? Is that real?
  7. Related to Dogs: I haven't owned a dog since my family's golden retriever, Max. He was such a wonderful light in our house, and I think about him a lot. I know that GSD are really smart, so I figured I'd put something a smart-alecky GSD owner might have on here. ;)
  8. Not Useful, But Awesome: I really love oracle cards. I find that they sort of get me past challenges that maybe I'm too stubborn to see for myself. I think they are a good psychological tool, but I also know most people would find them less than useful. Therefore, they are mostly just awesome, and I want them.
  9. Great Movie: I get some flak for it, but my favorite movie of all time is Coraline. I think it is just so thought-provoking and the animation is beautiful. It really has a special place in my heart.
  10. Zombies Attack!: Weirdly enough, I am in the process of creating an emergency plan and some bugout bags for my fiancé and I. It's more of a hobby than worry, but I always thought a couple of these matches would come in handy when the hammer drops.
  11. Life Goals: This one might require a little explanation. So, I just quit my career as an archaeologist to become a creative writer, and my fiancé just quit his archaeology career to become an illustrator. Together we are writing some children's books, creating a comic book series, and hosting a podcast. It has come to our attention that these endeavors require social media presence (something neither of us are very good at). Through our bumbling around, we've found that our pictures are turning out less-than-great for social media, and the problem is lighting. I think this lightbox really neat for anyone who wants to make their pictures look professional on social media.
  12. Add-Ons: Makeup Remover Cloths These are so useful, I thought about even adding them to the Zombie Apocalypse part of the Scavenger Hunt! I sometimes forget to take care of my skin. So I started leaving one of these by my nightstand just for those times when I'm too lazy (or drunk) to take my makeup off. They are lifesavers!
  13. Fandom Related: Adventure Time, come on grab your friends.... No explanation needed really. AT is amazing, and I'm sad the series is ending, but we will always have the comics!
  14. Ridiculously Priced: Okay, let's chat. This watch is over $200,000 and has 4 reveiws? 4 people bought this? Why?! If I was that rich, I'd hole up in my cool-ass movie theater and eat caviar all day. Who needs a watch for that?
  15. Shark or Unicorn: This unicorn color-changing light is on my wishlist. I want it so badly, but have no idea where I would put it. The bathroom maybe? It has to be somewhere that won't get in the way of all my other unicorn stuff. I like when people just happily stop upon a unicorn in the apartment. When they're peeing is a good time, right?
  16. Smells Great: These candles are the scents of a coffee shop and so I know everyone in my house would feel warm and welcome right when they walk in once they are lit. These are actually three of my favorite scents, so you can probably tell that I have a slight coffee-related addiction.
  17. Toy: Dixit is an amazing game. Like...I don't know how to describe it. A bunch of cards with illustrations on them need to be described by the players, and then everyone votes on which description they like the best (blindly vote). It's just a wonderful game for inspiration, and you can make it as complicated or as simple as you'd like. I really enjoy playing it with both my friends and family.
  18. Helpful for Writers: An Imaginative Workbook! I think one of the biggest things writers forget how to do is play! We spend so much time in our universe, trying to make it perfect, that sometimes we forget to just let go and have our imaginations run wild. I think workbooks like the one I just linked are perfect for when writer's block hits, or when we need a pick-me-up to remember why we started writing in the first place.
  19. Current Obsession: My current obsession has become learning how to play the ukulele. I heard on a couple of podcasts that it really boosted some people's happiness, especially if they loved music, but didn't feel like they had the time to learn to play a new instrument. I have been borrowing my neighbor's, but since I am moving soon, I've decided to purchase one from Amazon. They have tons of ukuleles on there, weirdly.
  20. Makes You Laugh: As a person who loves Wes Anderson films this coffee table book always makes me laugh.

Edit: Finished! I love scavenger hunts; it always reminds me what a weirdo I am.

For reference, discarding took about 4.5 months in my 1400 sq foot home and two storage sheds. I have started working on deep cleaning, upgrading necessary yet ugly items, and storage/organizing. I expect this to take another two months. I am watching "Clean My Space" and "Home Organizing by Alejandra.tv" channels on YouTube now to help with the process.

I am trying to keep in mind getting products out of original packaging, if possible, to limit exposure to constant advertising in my home. I am choosing to spend quite a bit on higher quality products that I love and expect to last many years. Fortunately, I have a budget that allows for some luxuries.

Bedroom

I started with my closet and these great baskets from the container store http://www.containerstore.com/s/whitewash-rattan-bins/d?productId=10037633&q=Large%20Rattan%20Bin%20Whitewash. The closet has a built in shoe organizer and I used my label maker to indicate what style shoes go on which shelf – heels, sandals, sneakers, flats and boots. I also labeled the shelf for each basket. Clothes hangers are all white. They used to be all kinds of colors, and I realized that white is more calming. I am now using these for my socks and undies since konmari folding did not quite work for me on those items http://www.amazon.com/MIU-COLOR-Collapsible-Underwear-Organizer/dp/B009A3HTXY. The folding works great for most of my other clothes. I am still pondering how to organize the nightstand drawers.

Kitchen

I bought a couple of 10" bamboo lazy susans for keeping my oils and vinegars organized in my cabinets. I bought some refrigerator organization units from InterDesign and the Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce savers. I intend to get Oxo food storage containers for dry goods.
I upgraded to these measuring spoons http://www.amazon.com/Cuisipro-Stainless-Steel-Measuring-Spoon/dp/B00004SU1I and these measuring cups http://www.amazon.com/Sagler-Measuring-Piece-Heavy-duty-Stainless/dp/B00V5EFWTO.

When I was discarding in my kitchen I found I did not really love my dinnerware so I got this set http://www.amazon.com/Corelle-Coordinates-18-Piece-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B00R790CLY plus matching lunch sized plates. I love the simple clean lines and the durability of the product. I downsized from a 12 person setting to 6 and it is great.

Bath

Have not done much here yet. I don’t have much need for storage organization in the cabinets. Still considering what I want to do with the drawers. Right now the drawers are still organized with small cardboard boxes from Glossybox, a cut down cereal box, and an empty jigsaw puzzle box. I upgraded my plunger and brush to nice stainless steel containers, and got a toilet paper holder that matches them http://www.amazon.com/Home-Basics-Vented-Stainless-Toilet/dp/B00JB20IDW.

Laundry

I replaced my bulky plastic basket with this http://www.amazon.com/Bajer-Design-Marketing-5234-Basket/dp/B0010KZCFC. It now hangs on a Command Hook next to the washer.

Car

I have repacked the car kit and 72 hour emergency kits in these for my car and my son's car. ttp://www.amazon.com/TrunkCratePro-Best-Premium-Trunk-Organizer/dp/B01AHK0J9Y. We live in an area prone to natural disasters so I like to be prepared wherever we are. I bought a car trash container (http://www.amazon.com/Highland-1932600-Car-Trash-Keeper/dp/B0027QWNGO) and created a little kit in a ziplock bag in the glovebox with essentials. Also, found tissues in a round container that fits perfectly in the door cup holder. I also bought a set of matching reusable grocery bags (http://www.amazon.com/ReBagMe-Reusable-Grocery-Reinforced-Handles/dp/B00Y17OIR4) so I don’t have the mismatched set. Finally, I have these on order (http://www.amazon.com/Car-Hammer-Seatbelt-Emergency-Must-Have/dp/B00CB8WM2S). Not organization related, just something I have been thinking that I needed for safety.

Purse

I reassessed what is in my purse. I used a couple small cosmetics bags that I had on hand and now have many things I wished I had at various times. Everything is neatly organized and I know exactly what is in there and why I have it. Everything from safety pins, to pen and notebook (http://www.amazon.com/Marble-Composition-Books-Notebooks-Green/dp/B00WRDIS9I), to a tiny flashlight, a granola bar in case I am out and hungry, a tide stain remover pen, a tiny Band-Aid package, tiny measuring tape (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-33-115-10-Foot-4-Inch-PowerLock/dp/B00009OYGH), my phone, my wallet, and my keys are always on the little hook. Not exactly Konmari minimalism, but those are all things that I wished I had at various times and I am happy that I will not be caught without again. It is a medium size purse, packed just right, with stuff easily accessible.

Home office

I have not done much there yet, but this drawer organizer is working pretty well http://www.amazon.com/Rolodex-Regeneration-Deep-Drawer-Organizer-21864/dp/B002JG48R4.

Command center

I am currently working on a “Command Center” to keep clutter off the kitchen counter. I have not purchased anything for that yet. I am writing down ideas, measuring, and considering products. http://thehappyhousie.porch.com/20-fabulous-command-centers-to-get-your-life-completely-organized/

Other random stuff:

I moved my CDs into a holder http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-DVDW-92-Capacity-Classic/dp/B00005ATMD and they now live on a Command Hook in my car. For movies I transferred them to these Sleeves http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-74604729-Movie-Sleeves/dp/B002JR2V7C and they now live in a small drawer in my living room. I tossed the packaging because it was bulky and does not give me joy.

I am using these in my linen closet http://www.amazon.com/Honey-Can-Do-STO-02986-Nested-Woven-Esspresso. This box for my jewelry http://www.amazon.com/Black-Leather-Jewelry-Travel-Case/dp/B0006JCGUM.

Not related to organizing, but I am loving these brushes for getting tiny spaces clean. So much better than an old toothbrush. http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Clean-Brush/dp/B003M8GMS6

If you made it this far, congrats. Something that I have noticed is that I can now shop with confidence, I can easily toss or donate the old unloved items, and I am organized enough to return those few items that don’t work as well as I hoped. My home feels much more open and inviting. I know where everything is and my clear vision is starting to come to fruition.

A fidget toy might be nice! After looking around, I got one of the vortex balls, because it seems like it would be weighty, fun to play with, and less likely to run away from me than one of the slidey/foldy ring toys... though I caved and got one of those too!

If you do decide to go with one of the vortex balls, check whether you're getting aluminum or stainless steel. That's a detail I only noticed as I was fetching the link, and I had a moment of alarm because I was afraid I got the aluminum one. (I want mine to be heavy.)

Assuming the comments are trustworthy, people really seem to like this seller, and they appear to be genuinely hand-made, too, for what it is worth. The vortex ball also comes in all sorts of colors and could be seen as decorative, too!

Also, I like the idea of the Tile -- tech is fun, and that is supremely useful! I might stay away from the planner and instead get a giftcard to someplace. That is speaking as someone with er... attachment issues with office supplies. Your friend might not be as picky as I am though, so it's just a thought.

You might also get them a dot-gridded journal, like this or this (I've also heard great things about Leuchtturm notebooks, but they are more expensive and I don't have experience with them) -- and then put a post-it note on the cover with www.bulletjournal.com written on it. ADHD-ers tend to love that journal system, at least for a good while, and it is extremely flexible, customizable, and not specific to the notebook you use. (Though the dot-grid allows for the best of a clean appearance and straight lines.) So no concern about planner incompatibility -- and no concern about mourning the waste of a dated planner that was never used. (hangs head for a moment of guilty silence)

For post-its, I enjoy the full adhesive ones, since they can be used for labels and all sorts of things, without a flappy nonadhesive edge (when I am really in a mood, I'll snip off the very narrow nonadhesive edge on these -- and they can also be cut into smaller pieces for smaller labels). You might be better looking in a local office supply store, though -- the colors on Amazon are not always the colors you end up with. (sour look)

Anyhow, hope this helps!

u/teemark · 2 pointsr/bourbon

You don't get all those flavors at once either. You'll get the standard "bourbon" taste up front, then as you hold it and maybe chew it a little, you notice some caramel. Then on the 2nd, 3rd, or 12th taste you notice some oak astringency or some brown sugar.

I don't get nearly all the subtleties that others do, but that's OK, I still enjoy it and try to give it the best description I can. I like to use the 33 Whiskies booklets to help identify flavors and how strong or light they are.

u/sethra007 · 4 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

OP, in addition to reading this link that /u/motherkos provided, please read these as well:

  • My SMIL thinks my daughter is the child she never got to have. Help!
  • My SMIL thinks my daughter is the child she never got to have. Help! UPDATE PT1
  • My SMIL thinks my daughter is the child she never got to have. Help! UPDATE PT2

TL;DR version: The SMIL (stepmother-in-law) kept trying to usurp the role of the mother, due to her own unprocessed grief around not being able to have a child. Her attempts to step into the role keep escalating, and when confronted, she had a serious meltdown/possible psychotic break.

I'm NOT suggesting that your MIL has mental issues. But based on your post, I get the sense that:

  • she seems very determined to be viewed as the Mother, rather than the Grandmother, to LO,
  • she also wants to be the authority on your LO (hence her determination to ignore LO's food allergies--she's probably decided that you and DH are just being trendy or silly, like those gluten-free people, and wants to prove you wrong),
  • and she wants to assert a certain amount of control over you, in a must-establish-dominance kind of way (hence the clapping).

I don't know what's going on with her. The good folks who post here will have a ton of good advice for you based on their own experiences, and it would be a good idea to give their advice careful consideration.

My own suggestion is that you get yourself a bound notebook that you can write in (something like a composition notebook), and start noting down every single time she does something that troubles you, along with date, time, place, who was present, what she did, how you responded, and her reaction to your response.

Why? Because (a) it will help you see what patterns of behavior are there, (b) it can help you explain very specifically to your DH what you're seeing and why it troubles you, and (c) if--God forbid--her behavior escalates to the point where you feel the need to take legal action, you now have a record of your behavior (that's why you use this sort of notebook, by the way--if someone rips out the pages, it's obvious).

Big hugs to you, OP. I can't imagine how upsetting this all is.
u/ThePoorPenman · 3 pointsr/notebooks

Decomposition books (amazon link) are made of 100% recycled paper and soy ink. I have not used these, but I've seen them online and in book stores, so it should be easy to get your hands on one.

Baron Fig has a system in place so every Confidant notebook that gets sold results in a donation being made to plant a tree. Plus, they are a small business that started with a Kickstarter a few years ago. I use one of these notebooks. Great quality for pretty much every pen I use (mostly fountain pens).

My gym essentials:

For the gym

  • Liquid chalk. THIS SHIT IS THE BOMB FOR GRIP. It's been so great when I'm either sweating a lot or I've over-warmed my cold hands with warm breath.
  • A notebook. I liked using this one when my workouts were more varied. Since I'm doing a more simplified routine right now, I've just been using a mini composition notebook because it's compact. A notebook is great for keeping track of your progress, keeping track of your lifts, and making notes about how you're feeling. Especially great if you find yourself having low energy days - you can take a look back at what you were eating during the day leading up to your workout and note things like your cycle, any new supplements you've tried, etc.
  • Water bottle
  • Carabiner with a key ring on it. I don't use this so much now that I'm only using my office gym, but being able to attach my keys to the loop on my Camelbak or the lid arm on my Nalgene water bottle is convenient.

    In the locker room

  • Two pairs of underwear - One pair I wear specifically for lifting - spandexy boy shorts that don't breathe well enough for all-day wear but do a good job of not riding up and keeping my jiggle to a low when I run. The other pair I change into after.
  • The rest of my outfit (top, compression leggings, shoes)
  • Some kind of headband and/or clips and a number of hair ties.
  • Moist wipes. I can't remember what brand I have now, but I get ones that are meant for the face. If I can't shower right often, then I use one after sweating to clean off my face then use the remainder on my chest, upper back where my barbell rests, then armpits, then towel dry everything.
u/anser_penna · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

Moleskine notepads aren't as great with fountain pens. Rhodia notepads are among the best, but ink may take a little longer to dry on them (also depends on the ink you choose to use).

Black 'n Red notebooks are what I would recommend--very affordable, good looking, and they work great with most fountain pen ink.

What have you tried?

What have you liked?

What have you not liked?

Get yourself a little notebook and keep track of what you drink and how you feel about it. These are already set up for wine, whiskey, and beer respectively, but you could also just get a little pocket reporter's notebook and DIY it.

Whenever you're out at bars and restaurants, try something new; provided you're not there at peak hours and the bartender has time to chat, ask for recommendations ("I really like X, what else do you have that's like that?"). If you prefer to imbibe at home, most liquor stores these days let you put together your own six-pack of beer, and nearly all of them will have those little ~2 oz sample bottles of spirits and liqueurs.

u/nostrebhtuca · 2 pointsr/EDC

Been here lurking for a while and finally decided to post my EDC. Since there's been some discussion lately as to where people carry their EDC that is how my list below is broken down. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Head

  • Seahawks Superbowl Champions Hat

    Neck

  • Seahawks lanyard with work ID, keycard, desk keys

    Left Wrist

  • Suunto Vector in Military Foliage Green

    Front Left Pocket

  • EZGO Slim
  • KOBALT Multitool
  • HTC One with White Otter Box Commuter Case
  • Olight S15 Baton

    Front Right Pocket

  • Carabiner with 4x Nite Ize S-Biners Size 0, Gerber Shard and KeySmart Standard Size
  • Gerber Impromptu
  • Kershaw Cryo 2

    Back Left Pocket or In-Hand

  • Rite in the Rain Notebook
  • Rite in the Rain Notebook Cover

For those interested in the EZGO and KeySmart my opinions are as follows.

I like the EZGOs form-factor, but after owning it for a while it doesn't 'stretch' at all for what's in there. I have two credit cards, ID, insurance and a punch card in mine and it's like pulling teeth to get anything out of it. Also, since it's made to fit cards, anything bigger than that can't be accommodated. As a result I have my CPL, vehicle insurance and KOBALT tool rubber-banded to the thing. I've been eyeing the Flipside 3X as a replacement, but their shipping is around $7 which is over 10% the cost of the wallet... hence my apprehension in buying one.

As for the KeySmart, I've had it a couple of days and so far I dig it but with a couple of caveats. They include two keyblanks for Schlage-style keys. I took one of them to Lowe's to have it cut and there was an issue with the blank, as a result their machine could not provide an accurate copy. I purchased a key from Lowe's and they made it without issue. Not sure what kind of weird science is up with the blanks they included, but I would be leery of buying their 'lightweight' and colored blanks as you may have similar results. My second issue may be somewhat nitpicky, but it's next to impossible to open the door with one hand anymore. Hands full of groceries or mail? Well, you better plan ahead on getting your key flipped out prior to getting to the door, other wise you'll be settin' that shit down.

Would I buy the EZGO Slim again? No. Would I buy the KeySmart again? Yes.

I've searched for unlined (or blank) Rhodia and Clairefontaine bound notebooks but they don't seem to be very popular. I'm currently using these notebooks (one for each class) and I love them because it's just a composition book filled with blank paper.

The trifecta of glorious tech rabbit holes for rapidly draining your bank account is fountainpens, headphones (I’m a Bose QC35 guy), and keyboards: https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalheadpens/
Here’s your map:

Fountain pens: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/ -> https://www.gouletpens.com/ -> http://www.andersonpens.com/ -> https://www.jetpens.com/ -> http://ipenstore.com/ -> https://www.birminghampens.com/ For paper you’ll start with a Red and Black http://amzn.to/2twmuRs and rapidly move to Tomoe River which will lead you to Hobonichi Techos https://www.1101.com/store/techo/en/lineup/ (but buy it from Jet Pens).

Keyboards: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/ -> https://www.reddit.com/r/olkb/ -> … this hole has too many branches to continue to document. It is deep. But satisfying!

Headphones: I plead the fifth. Friendships have been lost.

Welcome to our rabbit hole.

Not sure what country you're in, but I personally really like Bluelines. My favorite thing about them is that they provide tabs and all sorts of ways to organize it. None of the pens I use bleed through, but I haven't tried anything fancy like fountain pens.

u/anneoneemouse · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

In 2014 I bought one of these, then went back and bought a case of them because I liked them.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007XZKFSM/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item

Show through doesn't bother me much, so I'll have to look and see what my comp books look like. Bear in mind that I use fine and extra fine Japanese nibs so my pens aren't throwing a LOT of ink....

If you consider buying, I'd reach out to the seller and make sure they are still selling the ones made in Brazil....

Goulet pens carries galen leather product

I had one. Gave it to my sister.

If you want something simply utilitarian:

Rite in the Rain Weatherproof CORDURA Fabric Notebook Cover, 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", Black Cover (No. C980B) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003YTEMGW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ERlWDbHZ8P5W1

I use my Nock occasionally with a Rickshaw 6 pen (the simple one) turned sideways on the inside flap.

https://nockco.com/cases/seeda5

Bible covers work well and there are a lot of hand made (you could have a custom made non-religious) in Etsy

Lochby (formerly Bond Travel Gear) makes a rugged looking one, but it’s short on pen space.

https://www.lochby.com/products/field-journal

Yenderings makes some unique notebook/ pen storage wraps. I really like mine. It holds 12 pens a notebook and has pocket zippered pockets and other hiding spots

https://yenderings.com

I would Give Goulet or Vanness a tru if you want a leather Galen pen/notebook combo.

Here is the link to Vanness. They have the 5 pen case in a very nice Navy Blue

I personally use this case with SIMILAR notebooks. LOVE it.

Refillable Leather Pocket Notebook - Mini Composition Cover - Fits Standard 4.5 x 3.25" Mini Composition Book (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ITXOCLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FeNHzb4F7ETNJ

Mini Marble Composition Books, Thread Bound Notebooks, Red, Blue and Green, 12-ct, 600 Total Pages by Greenbrier https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0127TV3NE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xjNHzbRH50EQK

These are 50-page ones. I use 80-page ones. The 80 page ones fit better in the book. I found them at walmart. Important to note, they are THREAD bound and not glued. They are extremely durable. Even without the case, they lasted 1-2 months of heavy abuse and daily back-pocket carry. The case is more because i wanted a cover that i could incorporate into my EDC long term, like my Case Peanut.

I use notebooks, but I wait until there is a summer $0.10 deal to buy about 200, otherwise they are super expensive. Here are composition notebooks for about $1 each. I you really want them then buy them out of pocket, if not, just put the district person in contact with the school person and make them figure it out.

Like any other, you kind of want a keyboard that matches the way you type. Also, realize, that android specific bluetooth keyboards tend to be "quirky". I've found that I can never get the sort of speed that I can get over a proper keyboard.

That said, I've had experience with a few devices. My favorite has been the Asus Transformer keyboard attachment. Obviously, you'd get the Transformer instead of the Galaxy. (Not what you're looking for, but I'd still recommend it since it comes with extended battery life and additional flash storage.)

I've also got a folding bluetooth keyboard that I occasionally use with my laptop. www.amazon.com/dp/B004L9LT2E/ Battery life on it is fairly good, I'd toss a spare pair of rechargable AAA batteries in your bag so that when it dies you're not screwed.

I've also heard good things about the periboard www.amazon.com/dp/B005MJ6F80/ although I've not used it.

All that aside...

I'd also suggest that going with a tablet may not be a great idea. If you're just looking for something to write on, I'd suggest a laptop. While probably way the hell out of your price range, I'd recommend something like a Toshiba Protege http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006GTDPYM/ or even a used Mac Air. For no other reason than swapping between notes and references is possible. Hell, you could even go for an Acer Timelinex www.amazon.com/dp/B006SONX74/ get about 8 hours of battery life and pack a spare battery for an additional 8.

If nothing else, you won't have to worry about getting a stand for the tablet.

If you do go for a tablet, I'd also recommend packing an old fashioned tablet and stylus http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006IDM7/

It's Blueline notebook I picked up at staples for about $7. It's 7 1/4"x9 1/4", which makes it a bit of an odd duck in the paper industry. It seems like a pretty useful size to me.

I can swear by [Black N' Red notebooks] (https://www.amazon.com/Black-Red-Hardcover-Casebound-D66174/dp/B00015YOR4). They are 5-7 bucks, and they work great for all my pens.

I'd personally go with this flashlight, this pen, and this knife, and this notebook.

A brass notebook seems silly. Ideally, I'd upgrade the knife to a brass bolstered GEC slipjoint. Maybe a higher end flashlight too...like an Olight s1 in brass.

It's certainly fountain pen friendly and smooth, and £2.20 for a 140 page (70 sheet) notebook isn't bad. A few weeks ago Tesco had a deal where they were £1.50 and I bought 15 to see me through the year.

P.S. what university are you off to? I don't start 'till Monday but can't name many other places that haven't started yet.

Also, use a composition notebook like this, where it’s obvious if you’ve ripped out a page, and write in blue or black ink. From what I’ve read this is helpful for legal purposes.

The Moleskin Address Book has alphabetical tabs on the side and looks absolutely boss. Credit goes to Jeffrey Morgenthaler for the idea.

u/sarahmichelef · 2 pointsr/bujo

I've tried loads (I prefer softcover and thinner - I don't want to schlep the weight of a hardback book with 200+ pages)

-Fabriano ecoqua spiral bound grid

-Fabriano ecoqua dot grid

-Northbooks softcover dot grid

-Miliko spiral hardcover dot grid

-Currently I'm using a freebie that The Spouse got at a conference... I think it was made by Northbooks.

These all have their advantages and disadvantages. After about six months in bound books I've bought another of the spiral bound Fabrianos for my next notebook.

u/PiratesSayARRR · 3 pointsr/consulting

I actually prefer quad ruled paper ('graph paper'): http://www.amazon.com/BLUELINE-Business-Notebook-Ruled-A9Q/dp/B000FH1OQ2

Much easier to sketch charts / diagrams.

u/AoifeUnudottir · 1 pointr/bulletjournal

It's the Shine Bright productivity journal. Here are some links for Amazon US and Amazon UK

The grid is about 4mm instead of 5mm so not quite as small as you're looking for. Index built in, numbered pages, one ribbon, back pocket and stickers included. Paper quality feels very thick, but haven't actually used it yet so can't comment on bleed.

Meet you halfway:

This is the de-facto standard. Single-Subject, spiral notebook. Tough. Functional. Available everywhere.

Two things I hate about spirals:

Crushed wires making it awkward to flip pages.
Lack of stiffness demands a table-top.

Ponder a not horribly expensive upgrade:

Black n' Red
Moleskine Extra Large Hardcover

No more spiral. Can write in your lap. Classier look.

Also available in graph-paper pages...
