Thank you for the detailed response. I really appreciate the educational opportunity and your generosity in providing it.

Investing in the SSD before anything else seems like the clear winner. Thanks for underscoring that further.

Some discussions I came across and that I mentioned in another comment in this discussion thread also came to the conclusion that an SSD is the single best investment for the vast majority of situations, so it's nice to see the strong consensus :)

Thanks, as well, for the insight that useless RAM is something to avoid, especially based on your experiences as a computing veteran; and as an experienced builder, I would presume.

I remember having useless RAM sticks in the past after making a minor upgrade to a much older machine (~2001, maybe), and I recall it being frustrating even then to see the RAM go to waste.

Thus, a single 8 GB stick seems to be the way to go to start my new machine off well.

In terms of deciding between upgrading my current CPU or just investing in a new machine, it would appear that the consensus seems to be directing all funds toward a new machine is the better choice, especially due to the greater access to new technology. Thanks for the feedback.

>Don't bother using that ancient 8500gt or whatever, god no.

Thank you for that :) That seemed to be the conclusion I came to as well.

I'm pretty amazed that the iGPU of a CPU wafer is superior to a more massive GPU, but I guess that's what technology improvements can achieve over time.

In terms of the OS, your comment about an unsupported OS refers to when Win 7 reaches the end-of-life, in 2020, right? Or do you have a concern for those of us who plan to use Win 7 from 2017-2020 as well?

I presume this is what you are referring to regarding Kaby Lake's need for Win 10:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3112663/software/microsoft-made-em-do-it-the-latest-kaby-lake-zen-chips-will-support-only-windows-10.html

If this old machine is still running in 2020, I would definitely plan to migrate over to the unactivated Win 10, at the very least, or change the OS entirely to Linux.

Linux seems like it might have more compatibility issues than an unactivated Win 10, but at least it seems it would be more secure than an unsupported Win 7 installation.

However, this all presumes that your concerns are for when Win 7 support ends entirely in 2020, as opposed to now, when Win 7 is still being supported.

As Win 7 is under extended support until 2020, and it appears that security updates will be provided through the extended support period, there's likely not a security risk to continue running Win 7 through the extended support period, right?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14085/microsoft-business-developer-and-desktop-operating-systems-policy

Or are you still concerned?

This looks like the type of USB stick with a memory card reader that you were referring to:
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-SuperSpeed-Windows-Certain-Android/dp/B00OJ5WBUE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495240886&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+memory+card+reader

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I guess I just need to more aggressively search the internet for products to meet my needs, since it appears they are usually already on the market.

Thanks, again, for all of your help :)

Thanks /u/lamic

I looked through your post and recommendations, it looks awesome! I know I really should wait for the Hero5 but I'm not sure if I can wait.

I started to put a list of things I want/need into a spreadsheet, to start looking at Price. I have Amazon Prime so I'm thinking about ordering everything through Amazon.

Can you take a quick look through my list and see if everything checks out and if I missed anything for "Basic" operations? Then could you make any more recommendations, or let me know what my next purchases should be?

  • GoPro HERO4 SILVER- $338

  • Memory Card Lexar 64GB- $35, Looks like the cheapest one between Sandisk Extreme and Lexar, Lexar currently is the cheapest on Amazon

  • Batteries - Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack)- $22, Read a few reviews and people said they like these batteries a lot. Should give me enough juice and let me know how long I can record with, until I'm completely dead.

  • Protection Lens - $7 I really just need to lens protector, in the reviews people are saying some parts don’t fit the Hero4 only the Hero3. Or should I put the $20 version off the actual GoPro site?

  • GoPro The Tool$4, Like you requested and reading some comments it looks like it would be worth it.

  • A basic Card Reader - $7, did a quick google search on best card readers this one popped up for best for it’s price.

  • SANDMARC® Pole - $40, Looked up some reviews and people tend to like this one. It seems like is always recommended to have some kind of stick or holdable mount to start off with. Also could you go into a little more detail about mounting the GoPro?

  • Pelican Case -$25 I like the idea of it being waterproof and I like to be organized with my stuff. So this looks like a perfect fit. And it will be an awesome case to travel with.

  • Kingston 5-in-1 Mobile Companion - $35 I was watching some videos and it seems like this could be a cool little gadget to have. I would mostly use it for “mobile uploads to Hard Drives”. Working in IT I know how important it is to have backups, and this will let me get around bringing a laptop to the resort and other stuff. This is the video I’m referring too that shows you how to upload to a HD with out a computer.

So with everything in my cart I’m sitting at $488 which is with in my budget.

I’m still reading about the remote. That might be something we add down the line. I think I’ll be pretty content with just my phone app or getting the “waterproof touch screen” case cover too.

Do you think this is a good setup? Will this get me going? Do you have any recommendations, or anything that I should add or not buy yet?
u/mobilesnow · 9 pointsr/Surface

Here are a few. I’m boarding a flight so I can’t get you the URLs but searching and googling will help you out.

  1. Download and install the latest working Nvidia drivers (390.77) as that unlocks the Nvidia control panel so you can manually select which apps use GPU vs dGPU. I’ve caught a few games trying to not use the dGPU and this fixed it.

  2. Adaptive brightness: there are two things that cause your screen to dim on its own. One is via the camera and the ambient lighting in the room. This you can disable in settings. The other is based on the brightness of the onscreen content. This is an Intel GPU Setting. You can either install the Intel drivers and disable it via the Intel control panel, or you can search here for the quick registry edit to resolve it.

  3. Your power cable can plug into the bottom of the tablet when it’s undocked to charge just be tablet portion.

  4. If you’re a digital artist, Lazy Nazumi is great for getting rid of any pen jitters you experience. Most have no issues unless you are a doing very detailed linework.

  5. Seer is an amazing application that lets you press the space bar to preview any file similar to MacOS (it made my switch 10x easier)

  6. Auto Hot Key is a great app to remap any key command and all sorts of other useful features. It might look intimidating at first but once you dive in it’s really straight forward.

  7. The Baseqi micro sd adapter sits flush with your SB2 and lets you boost your storage in a pretty elegant way. Make sure you get the right size as the 15” version is a bit deeper than the 13.5” version. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0798MPVT2

  8. After trying 3 different laptop sleeves I found this one fits perfectly as though it was custom made. Bonus it has an elastic pouch that is flat when not used but otherwise fits your power cord. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00359EXWE

I’m sure there is a lot more but that should get you started hopefully!

Most dash cams won't have a USB Flash drive for memory, but will more likely have a Micro SD card, that can be put in a USB memory card reader. Example

  • A118C ($50-$60 USD) - Where to purchase + Known Problems of A118C - Similar problems to A119, similar average build quality, similar parking mode (lackluster), fair/good video quality.

  • Xiaomi Yi ($45 USD) - Known Problems Excellent video quality Day/night/shadow - Ultra wide lens fish eyes. No parking mode. Heat tolerance problems. Build quality average/poor.

    > At the same time I'm also on a budget, something less than $50.

Of the two I would pick the A118C, but if you increase your budget to 90-100 USD many more options open up. You could also pick the G1W-C(B) but built quality complaints, and strange occurances, and annoying bugs, build up on that one. Also Xiaomi Yi heat tolerance and build quality often leads to RMAs and failure.

    ---

A note for Micro SD Cards: Sandisk Ultra is not made for Dashcams.

What is recommended for dash cams: Lexxar 300, 633x, or Transcend High Endurance or any MLC card.

    For more on this issue:

  • What Micro-SD Should I Buy for my Dash Cam?

  • Dash Cam 101

  • and the best resource: https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/mlc-microsd-cards.10294/

Anyways if you are still reading this I suggest fully researching a dash cam b4 purchasing, and it's competitors. Many purchase based off of price, but there are much better dash cams with very slight difference in price. Also many underestimate the value of an Excellent parking mode, Excellent build quality, and dual cams.

Lackluster = not automatic, no built in low voltage cut off feature, not buffered. Motion sensors aren't all created equal, video quality is nice, but fair works, also an excellent parking mode can't be replaced, neither can excellent build quality.

Many complain about Fair video quality:

  • Thinkware F50 1-CH ($69.99 USD) - Fair video quality, Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode. - Lacks a Wifi/cell phone app, but format free technology helps and reliability is top notch. ($69.99 USD) - 2nd vendor. ($90-110 USD) - 3rd vendor. - There is a coupon code for this one in the video description.

The level of expectation for all dash cams should be: Read the plate out loud, and record via audio. By footage is nice to have, but should not be expected. Even Excellent video quality might miss the plate, especially at speed, and at night. Also pen/paper write down the plate #, and call the police with telling them the number.

I've traveled to quite a few places with my kit lens. It's pretty damn good.

You still have time to fill out the rest of your stuff, if needed:

Filters:

Singh-Ray Filters makes a "ColorCombo LB" filter. Works like wearing a pair of polarized GOOD quality sunglasses outdoors. I never took it off. Excellent quality and helped when the sky was overexposed and when I generally wanted to get a more intense color.

Lens:

Your kit lens will be more than fine for anything during the day. But at night is different. The kit is meh at night. You definitely want something to capture night time. Maybe some star time lapses? Those are always cool.

Leica 15mm F1.7 My wallet hurt when I bought this, but to be honest, it's on my camera more than it's not. It makes the night look amazing. The quality is awesome too.

Panasonic 25mm f1.7 - compared to the "nifty fifty" on a full frame (25mm*2=50mm). This is our "go-to" as a second lens (for day and/or night), but to get an idea of how 'zoomed in' it is, take your kit lens and rotate it to "25mm". That's how this lens is. Too much for me, but it's still worth mentioning.

Panasonic 45-150mm f4.0-5.6 - I just bought this lens from Amazon Warehouse for $100. It's very well built and serves it's purpose (when I want to zoom in on something far away).

Microphones:

If you want a better microphone get the Videomic Pro+. The difference between this and the others are that the mic turns on/off automatically when the camera turns on/off and it has a USB rechargeable battery.

Batteries:

Speaking of extra batteries, you're going to want more. There are three types: cheap non-decoded, cheap decoded, and OEM (which are decoded).

Non-decoded means you won't know how much battery you have left in the camera. Obviously that's dumb. Spend a little more and get decoded. I really like these OAproda 2 pack + charger. No battery lasts as long as the OEM, but it's close enough. Plus, the OAproda charger is much thinner than the others and charges via USB.

SD Cards:

I love these SanDisk Extreme Pro. I purchased the 128gb because I NEVER want to be in a position that I can ever possibly run out of space.

You'll want a way to copy the files to your pc. This Transcend USB 3.0 works amazingly, and it's $9 for a two pack.

External Drive:

You WILL run out of space on your laptop. You can either purchase 3-4 SD cards, or you can get an external HDD. Each has it's pros and cons.

Battery Pack / cables:

Whether it's your phone / headphones / batteries / tablet / whatever, I suggest the Anker PowerCore. These things are beasts. One of these made sure I was able to fly from here to Australia without worrying about battery levels.

You'll also want to carry extra wires. Whether MicroUSB, USB-C, or Lightening, I would never use anything else but Anker PowerLine

International Charger:
I used the BESTEK Travel Adapter and loved it. Plenty of ports to charge stuff on. It has a small fan (to keep it cool) that some people say bothers them, but I'm the lightest sleeper and it didn't bother me. Barely heard it.

I'm going on a cruise in May and would like a way to backup my pictures and to edit on the fly, preferably with my tablet. My camera doesn't have Wi-Fi capabilities, but even if it did the Wi-Fi on a cruise ship is so amazingly slow (think dial up speeds lol). I know I may need two different things to do both of these. Any suggestions?
Right now, I'd like to look into a cord to transfer to my tablet, can I edit raw on an app on an Android tablet (Lightroom?).

I'm also looking at an external hard drive for the main backup, do they make ones that hook up to the camera (sl1) or that accept sd cards?

I don't want to spend too much, but I'll probably have $100-200 or a smidge more if necessary.
Any suggestions would be great!

Edit: For anyone who's interested, I did end up getting a card reader and I had an OTG cable that was recommended to me previously to connect my camera to my phone so I could do a time-lapse (I should have realized it would have worked fine, but I had tried my dad's cable that looked exactly the same before that and it didn't work for what I wanted it to). So, it worked perfectly! Nothing else needed and I can transfer pics from my SD card to my phone/tablet. I'm still looking into an external drive or something for storage, but as long as they're on the SD and tablet I feel a lot more comfortable. Thanks everyone for your help!

What I purchased:

OTG Cable $4.99 USD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LN3LQKQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

SD Card Reader $6.29 USD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009D79VH4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

Not expensive at all!

Hiya,

HDMI Cable:

MicroUSB Power Supply:

8GB SD Card:

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Memory-SDSDUN-008G-G46-Newest-Version/dp/B00M55BS5O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458167735&sr=8-2&keywords=8gb+sd

SDHC Card Reader:

http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Information-Card-Reader-TS-RDF5K/dp/B009D79VH4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458167758&sr=8-1&keywords=sdhc+reader

All together that comes to $75 and will play games from the Atari, NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Gameboy etc. If you buy that SD card then I have an 8Gb image file already put together for it with over 4000 games that I could put up for you to download, you then just write it to the SD card, pop it in the Pi and plug it in, it will auto boot to a nice menu controlled by the control pad, select your game and play, then just press "Start + Select" to go back to the menu to select another game/system. It's very easy to use as all the hard work of aquiring the games and artwork has already been done.

You can get the more powerful Pi 2 or 3 and a bigger MicroSD to have more roms but that pushes the price up and will need more work to setup.

I have aspergers and my wife is type one so I understand some of the difficulties your son faces, I hope you can use this to help make him happy. My sister has an autistic son also and I put together one of these and he loves it, she got him to write a one sentence review and score out of 10 for each game. It became something they could do together and talk about, and also helped to convince him to do things liek help with cleaning his room etc so that he could do "one more review before bed" as she thinks it important to always push him that little bit to give him the best chances later on in life.

Anyway, here is a video showing the system in use so you can see what you think:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDWebx6D2Zc

Also with the addition of another SD card, usb keyboard and mouse and it also works as a computer with web browsing and programming tools for kids (Scratch).

Hope this helps, let us know if you want the 8Gb SD card image uploaded for you to download (not to be re-distributed though)

Regards

I actually just finished setting up a similar setup for my high school's football team.

From the info you have given me, I would recommend the following.

Camera: Canon Vixia HF G20 - I personally have a lean toward canon cameras. Regardless of that, it is a great camera with great low light capabilities, dual SD card slots for longer record times, 32GB of built in memory, full hd recording, AC wall power adapter for longer record times, and more.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/909792-REG/Canon_8063b002_32GB_VIXIA_HF_G20.html

SD Cards: San Disk Extreme 64GB or 128GB - Great cards with good speeds and since the g20 has dual sd card slots, using two would then double your record time. With a 64gb card, we usually get 8+ hrs on a single card. If you go for 128, or dual card, you will get more record time. If you are going to need to be able to shoot for a long time and then shoot again the very next day and do not want to have to off-load the cards, it would be easier just to get a few more cards.

If you get a lot of SD cards, I find it useful to have one of these to protect your sd cards.
https://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Black-Memory-Protective-Replaces/dp/B005D2JE2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474933767&sr=8-1&keywords=pelican+sd+card+case

I would certainly hope that you have a dedicated computer for your uploading tasks.

If your computer does not already have an SD card reader, that would be a good thing.

https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-SuperSpeed-Windows-Certain-Android/dp/B00OJ5WBUE/ref=zg_bs_516872_1

You did not really specify how often you would be doing shoots and for how long you would want to store the data for. In terms of short term storage, you could just use the hard drive on your computer if it is big enough or you could get an external drive, large enough for the last few (~3-5) shoots before you transfer it to longer term storage or delete the footage. Within this you have two options, hard drives or SSDs. The difference being transfer speeds and cost, SSDs are faster and more expensive. Here are two options.

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA1000400/dp/B00TKFEEAS/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1474934311&sr=1-2&keywords=1tb+hard+drive

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T3-Portable-SSD-MU-PT1T0B/dp/B01AVF6UO8/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1474934377&sr=1-1&keywords=1tb+external+ssd

In addition to all this gear, I would recommend uploading to youtube because it has a much better uploader and I think the user interface is a trade-off that is worth it. Especially since you will be uploading a lot of footage.

More detail about what you want would also help in giving advice.

You can email me (jcdprofilms@gmail.com) or PM me if you would like to discuss this more.

u/deckyon · 5 pointsr/Surface

I will be testing this out. I raid regularly in WoW, and this past weekend, the SB2 worked great. Averaged between 40-60 FPS in raid at its native resolution with the graphics settings at 7 for normal world, and 5 for Raid. No, it isnt as good as my dedicated gaming and editing machine, but more than passable for me. I knew it wasn't going to get as good of performance as the other machine, but I bought it for travel to game and edit videos.

It is closer to the other machine for editing, only being slightly slower for scrubbing and rendering of 4K. My main machine is near to real time (5 min video takes just over 5 mins to render on the main machine.) I will give it a godo test tonight, but the initial testing had it rendering out the same 5 min video in a little under 7 minutes. Completely acceptable for a travel box.

Photoshop and Lightroom perform fantastically. While I havent done official tests or anything, they perform as well as my main machine. And being able to set them up to always use the GPU, they scream. and I love using it in tilt mode (with the screen flipped and folded over the KB.

I opted for the 15" i7, 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I have a 256 GB MicroSD I use for storage and got an adapter that is meant for the SB2 15". I will link it. This saved me a good amount of money. There is a huge jump between that 256GB and 512GB SSD. With everything I need, and using the MicroSD as a scratch disk, I still have over 100GB free space. Windows, WoW full, Premier Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom and various other apps related to CCE.

https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-MicroSD-Adapter-Microsoft-Model-351A/dp/B0798MPVT2

The SB2 you mention (even the 256GB SSD) can easily be a full desktop replacement so long as expectations are within the real world and the device is used as designed. I see mine being used more than my main computer.

Raspberry Pi 2 Model B

Supports CEC. Comes with 4x USB 2.0 slots, an HDMI, quad core ARM A7 processor, 1 GB RAM, and an ethernet port. Also has GPIO pins but I don't know of any Kodi related uses for them. It is an extremely low power device (uses about $3 worth of electricity per year) and requires nothing to keep it cool (e.g., no fans blaring in the middle of your favorite movie).

Base cost is $35. Requires a microSD card, an HDMI cable, and a microUSB charger, all of which can be purchased for approximately $5 each. An existing microUSB charger, such as from your cell phone or a device like a Kindle or Chromecast can be used, of course. Optional components include a case ($10-$20 or 3D print your own), USB wifi dongle ($10+), and an external hard drive ($50+). A few companies put out bundles that include a Raspberry Pi board and various components such as this basic one and this more complete one. A wireless keyboard ($20+) can also be handy. Product links are provided as examples; there may be better deals or smarter purchases to be had.

You'll then want to use a minimalistic Linux distro such as OpenELEC or OSMC, both of which are designed specifically to run Kodi and have optimized builds for a Raspberry Pi. OpenELEC seems to be more popular and is what I use myself. Installation is easy -- you just download and write to your SD card (oh yeah, you might need an SD card reader, $5). If you'd like you can also install a "real" Linux distro and install Kodi in that as you would on a regular desktop computer. You can either store your media on an external hard drive connected to the Raspberry Pi or on a separate computer or NAS and share your files over your LAN.

Pros:

  • Cheap base cost
  • Low power
  • Very hands off after initial setup
  • CEC! Use your TV remote to control Kodi
  • Hardware decoding for h264
  • As it is full-fledged computer you can easily add in additional software such as emulators, a web browser, etc.
  • More of a DIY solution (may be a con)

    Cons:

  • A few plugins (typically they are Windows dependent) and more computationally intensive skins may not work
  • May get pricey if you need to buy all the separate components
  • Can not handle 10-bit x264 (aka Hi10p; rare outside of anime fansubs) or HEVC (aka h265) files.
  • No 4K output, max resolution is 1920x1200
  • More of a DIY solution (may be a pro)

Halo=3.4GB, Halo 2=4.4GB, GTA San An=2.9GB, DJFFNY=2.8GB, SW KOTOR=3.7GB, Battle for Bikini Bottom=1.7GB. I'd say average is maybe 2 to 3.5GB. All these sizes I listed are in xbe format, ftp'd to hdd.

I put a 2TB in mine, and I can now see it was overkilll for what I wanted. I have a few more modded xbox's I'm gonna upgrade soon, and planned on going with 500GB, but the 1TB is only a few bucks more, so I'm gonna do that.

I used these parts...

The adapter comes with a molex splitter, so you dont need to buy one if you go that route. I've read that the HDE adapter also works, but is 50/50 on if you get a working one, so that's the only reason I went with Startech. I'm very happy with that 80 wire cable, also. Before ordering, I read countless reviews of other cables being crap, and not being a tight connection, or even having a connector that works. This one is awesome, its a little snug, and hard to bend, but I eventually got it in there and look semi professional. The 3 connectors are spaced a little weird for xbox, so you can only use it one way, and just barely have enough spacing between the hdd cradle and dvd drive. The cable is very firm, I was worried it was going to be low quality, but its nice.

Here is an outdated upgraded hdd list to browse through... http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list

Next time, I'm gonna try the WD10EZEX. I've read it works fine.

I have the following games installed and am only using 94.2GB.

GB-569, GBA-1140, GBC-564, N64-212, GENESIS-810, NES-820, SNES-787, XBOX-27, PSX-5.

Since this is my main xbox, I'm gonna eventually load it down with as many original xbox titles as I can find. After that, I've read that CoinOps and Final Burn are worth checking out, so thats also on the list. Once I find out the games I like, I'm gonna make the 1TB purely for games I enjoy, nothing extra. I do love the Favorites tab in Rocky's Emustation, makes finding a game you love out of thousands very easy.

I haven't found out how to get the PSX games to show up in emustation yet, but I know it has to do with the bin/cue area. The bin's are large files, but the cues are only 1kb. I think I saw Rocky post somewhere saying you have to load from cue's, but I'm not sure how.

If you are into N64 at all, check out EarthWormJames' 212 pack. Very sweet. I can link you in pm if needed.

I've been thinking of a summer trip like this. I have both a Hero 3+ Black and a Hero 4 Black. Alas, I will only use one of them for my trip (probably the H3+).

My recommendation would be to buy 2x/3x GoPro Hero ($130). Have them strapped to you, your handlebar and maybe one close to the road just behind your front tire. If everyone in your riding crew has a GoPro Hero, you can combine the different perspectives of all your GoPro's for a sweet post production video.

A 3-axis gimbal would be nice to stabilize one of your GoPro's. Is it worth it though? Maybe. Even if one was willing to put in the funds for all this, where would one mount the gimbal stabilized GoPro?

I'll be watching your thread for ideas from others as it would be nice to get ideas from others on this. Good luck and happy riding.

Oh, one more thing. You might want a back up solution for all those SD cards for a 10 day trip (http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-Multifunctional-wireless-Accessing-compatible/dp/B00INMB23Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425946115&sr=8-1&keywords=portable+backup+disk+with+micro+sd+slot).

u/Mbellotti · 3 pointsr/ipad

I've recommended this hub many times. It's what I use to backup my photos while traveling. It may not work with all external hard drives, but I use a larger flash drive and it works great. But if it has its own power source it sounds like it might work.

Alternately you could go with one of these. They are bit more expensive, but seem to work a little easier.

Also, I think it's a bit easier to use SD cards for this scenario without a computer. I use this adaptor and haven't had any issues. Makes life a little easier while traveling not having to worry about bringing a separate reader.

Hope all that helps a little.

  1. I went with this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013QFRS2S/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522885721&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=wd+2tb+hdd&dpPl=1&dpID=519l6PabkxL&ref=plSrch. Works great!

Also note that you’ll need a data adapter to use the drive. I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EOJNGC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1522885867&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=startech+sata+adapter

Also will need a Molex Y power splitter and an 80 wire ide cable (upgraded from the stock 40 pin) Everything all together should be around $75.

I reccomend using Chimp to clone your hard drive since you have a 1.6 and can’t tsop. I watched this video and it told me everything I needed:
    https://youtu.be/lBC9599ww6I

  2. As you stated before, JCRocky5 has his softmod package which you can burn to a dvd-r and easily install xbmc and set it as your main dashboard.

  3. Tbh not many people I know do the ram upgrade, it’s uses are limited but would help a bit with some emulators. The 2 popular snes emus run fantastic without the ram upgrade, as does the genesis, gba, and nes. The psx and n64 ones are a bit more finnicky, but many of the popular games have compatibility settings which make the games run quite well.

Number 4 I’ll let someone more experienced help on.
u/barnes80 · 2 pointsr/raspberry_pi

Great post OP, thank you very much. I started progress on my magic mirror following these instructions and wanted to post my experience so far.

Already had:

  • Rasberry Pi A+
  • Old monitor, stripped from casing to reduce size.
  • VGA to HDMI converter cable to allow using my monitor with pi.
  • Micro Usb cable for power & ac adapter.
  • USB Wifi stick ( Mine worked perfectly with raspbian jessie without any additional work) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704140&cm_re=wifi_usb-_-33-704-140-_-Product

    Things I needed to purchase:

  • 16 gb Micro SD card (It was practically the same price as 8gb) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q57SEE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
  • USB Hub. I accidentally purchased this one thinking it was powered. Luckily I was able to power the keyboard, mouse, and wifi without an issue. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003M0NURK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

  • USB card reader (since my computer doesn't have one) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009D79VH4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

    Issues Encountered:

  • WiFi wouldn't work: Turned out I plugged it in while pi was already running. Spent a lot of time trying to debug before realizing that I just needed to restart. My wifi dongle (linked above) was able to work immediately without any additional work.

  • Calendar not loading: In calendar.php I left the "$_GET" portion when putting my google url in. Line should just be:

    $url = 'YOUR_URL'

  • Screen won't rotate: I changed to all lowercase display_rotate=1 and cleaned up some white space and screen rotate worked properly. Not sure what the problem was exactly but working now.

I will probably be removing the news and compliments because I am using a smaller screen and want to leave more open space.

I also am looking for a solution to showing events from multiple calendars. I keep my google calendars separated by type, like bills, appointments, etc. These are kept on separate calendars so I can filter which is viewed. But I'd like to consolidate this data on the mirror, or rotate between calendars. May modify the source myself if nothing already exists.

But to get everything running on the pi took about 2hrs including resolving my issues. Building the frame will probably take longer as my wood working skills are pretty sub par.

this guy has the right idea. but when replacing everything you should highly consider upgrading the components.

hopefully your ipod is a 5th or 5.5 generation ipod classic video.
this is the best ipod classic model to upgrade into a higher capacity ipod (128gb, 250gb, 500gb)

then buy these parts on amazon...

the first item is a 128gb & 256gb mini SD card. this will give you the best/fastest performance possible for the size/price. booting from a flash card will be much noticeably faster than your ipod.

the next item is an SDXC to CF adapter, which will allow you to connect the 128gb SD card onto your 1.8 ZIF.

the third item is the CF to 1.8 ZIF adapter for iPod.

the last item are the tools needed to do everything.

connect it all together and you got yourself a super fuckin cool ipod.

check out amazon and ebay for new cases, faces, whatever. you can even get the aftermarket U2 ipod covers and install them.
ipod motherboard.

cheers.

EDIT: last item is actually a higher capacity battery + tools.

It depends what you need. I initially thought 32 GBs on my Nexus 5 wouldn't be enough, but once I chose to download my ~1000 or more songs on Spotify in normal quality instead of 320kbps, I now have tons of free space. Your usage may be different, but depending on what you use it for, a Nexus 5 may be the better option...and if it is, you should get it instead.

  1. Compatible with Ting.
  2. Android L is coming.
  3. It's downright gorgeous. (get it in red)

    MicroSD card holder.

Get an OTG cable and a good SD/MicroSD reader, and you're golden.

I went looking for decent SD card readers recently as I wanted to speed up Raspberry Pi card flashing...

If all he wants is SD cards, I'd take a look at something like a Kingston MobileLite G4. Yes, this is not an internal card reader - but most internal card readers that exist are of rather low quality. For example, they aren't UHS-I/-II compatible to read faster cards. It's around $10.

If your father wants CF cards or MicroSD without hunting for an adapter, take a look at this Kingston Reader. It's around $18.

I haven't used these readers; I'm planning on snagging one in the near future, but hopefully someone else can pop in with experience with them. The Wirecutter really likes the all-in-one; meanwhile, Legit Reviews liked the MobileLite G4.

I'm suggesting these two because reviews seem to hold that they're fast, cheap, and at least a recognizable brand. I have no idea how fragile or reliable they are. That said, they're the way I would go.

Also, to echo some of the other comments on here: Get your Dad an SSD at least for the OS and some programs. It doesn't have to be big - 128GB is absolutely safe, 60 can be really crowded. You can snag a bunch of 120GB SATA SSDs for around $55-$60. Another option is an NVMe SSD, since your MSI motherboard supports it - see port 10 in the diagram. I've been happy with a MyDigitalSSD BP NVMe SSD - and 128GB of REALLY fast SSD for $70 is a steal. (As a guideline, SATA top out around 540Mb/s ideal, while NVMe are often 1500Mb/s or higher.)

Start a little SBC (single board computer) project. For a server with only 1 HDD/SSD then an Odroid HC2 is pretty sweet. Some people even buy lots of them and cluster them together as one giant server. I was thinking about getting one to backup Windows to. There is specific software out there for sorting and looking at pictures. I forget the names, but some of them might have an app.

I believe that you'll need a card to run the OS off of, so could buy here or off of Amazon and you'll probably need a USB to plug that into to load the OS (unless you already have one). Not sure what size Micro-SD card would be best, so you'll have to research.

This is a usb key with a micro usb on one side so you can plug it into your phone directly.

The other is a wireless drive that allows me to connect to my android phone or iPad or even my laptop. it's called the RAVPower FileHub Wireless SD Card Reader with Built-in 3000mAh External Battery Pack black and white

The device creates a wifi network and allows the device to connect. Now there are other wireless drives out there but the nice thing about this drive is that it uses USB or SD cards for storage so moving the data onto the drive is very easy. I was able to get a nice cheap SD card for storage. Also as a nice bonus it has a little battery backup.

u/rdjarvis · 7 pointsr/PSP

Couple of things you need first: A big MemoryStick Pro Duo, or better yet, a MicroSD-to-Memory Stick adapter and a MicroSD card between 32 & 128GB in size ( stay under 128GB to avoid menu lag). Here’s the adapter I used, with a 128GB MicroSD from Walmart:

PSP Memory Stick Adapter, Funturbo Micro SD to Memory Stick PRO Duo MagicGate Card for Sony Playstation Portable, Camera, Handycam https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F68FCHD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rk6tDbC8YBTDB

Then you’ll need to install custom firmware. It’s basically installing a modified version of Sony’s operating system, that allows you to run unsigned or unofficial apps and games on your PSP. The best step-by-step guide for doing so, with download links for what you’ll need, is here:

https://hackinformer.com/PlayStationGuide/PSP/DEVICE_PSP.html

Once you’ve got ample storage and custom firmware, you’ll need emulators. I got most of mine from here although in some cases there are newer/better versions available on the respective product github pages or in the forums:

http://wololo.net/emulators-for-the-psp-ps-vita-the-ultimate-download-list/

http://wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?t=44039

Installing emulators is usually as simple as downloading with a PC, and extracting the eboot.pbp file and other included/required files & folders from the downloaded archive and onto the PSP MemoryStick into the correct folder location, usually something like “MS:/PSP/GAME/EMULATOR_NAME/“

However, in addition to the emulators, which function as the game consoles you want to play, you will also need the games themselves, which are collectively called roms. These you will need to place in a “roms” or “games” subfolder in each emulator’s folder. Those you’ll have to hunt down yourself, though; the legality of distributing roms varies by region, and may be against the rules to share here.

Once you get all that lined out, you’ll have to figure out each emulator’s controls, options and menu schemes; these are homebrews, that is, apps made by hobbyists and enthusiasts in their spare time. They often don’t have a unified menu structure or common user interface.

But once you get everything figured out, it will be totally worth it.

Edit: reworded homebrew extraction instructions for clarity(?)

Heh. Well, despite your snarky comment, I've decided to provide a suggestion. Perhaps this might be a bit more useful.

A super simple search at Amazon revealed a highly rated Best Seller product that reads SD cards and hooks to a USB port. It's $6.99 with free shipping.

Its also small, like pack of gum small, so I'd imagine you could carry it in a pocket.

So, I'd imagine that would solve your issue.

Yeah, everyone expects Microsoft to announce an update to the Surface Book in the fall, possibly November timeframe. Though of course, this is all just speculation.

Between the two existing models, I would say that for gaming you would definitely want the 2016 edition with the Performance Base. I have the 2015 Core i7 / dGPU OG Surface Book, and the graphics are just too limiting for a good gaming experience. On the newer model, you can likely run most current AAA PC games at 900p/1080p with decent settings and framerate (there is a sub for dedicated Surface gamers called r/sufacegaming I believe... check there).

For your use case, the only real benefit of the 16Gb model, in my view, would be if you expect to run more than 1-2 virtual machines as part of your programming / CS workload. 8GB is still a lot of memory. You can expand the storage of any Surface Book by getting one of these: BASEQI Micro SD Adapter for Surface Book and an appropriate micro SD card.

Good luck.

u/Halo_Chief117 · 3 pointsr/originalxbox

To upgrade the softmod, use this Quick Upgrade from Rocky5's Softmodding Tool. You just FTP it to your the root of the E partition and run the default.xbe file. If you haven't nulled your EEPROM, you need to do that as well so if the HDD dies, you can easily replace it. You can run Rocky5's Softmodding Tool Extras Disc from your HDD or use ConfigMagic to do that.

Also, if you have a SATA HDD dock or some kind of SATA to USB adapter, nulling the EEPROM would allow you to easily build an upgrade HDD on your PC for the Xbox. You may even be able to hook the HDD directly into another slot in your computer, but I can't remember. I want to say yes on that though. Anyway, you'd use XboxHDM2USB beta 3 to do that.

OR, you can use Chimp 261812 to clone your HDD to a larger one. You will need a molex splitter, IDE to SATA adapter; this one is recommended a lot but others work too. And you will need a 40-pin 80 wire IDE cable; 24 inches is recommended. You'll boot you Xbox as normal, load Chimp, and it will tell you when to hot swap the DVD drive with your HDD you're upgrading to. It's pretty straightforward.

As for the DVD drive, they are interchangeable between Xbox consoles and are not locked to the motherboard. I don't know much about those, but you can try cleaning the laser or adjusting it doing a laser pot tweak. I think that's what it's called. Someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in on that.

And lastly, since it's pretty much obligatory here, remove the clock capacitor in your Xbox if it hasn't been removed and your Xbox isn't a revision 1.6 or 1.6/b.

I have the surface book and have had it for over a year.

I have the first generation i7, 256gb 8gb ram, iGPU

Lightroom + Smartpreviews works beautifully.

There are few quirks which might be addressed in the new generation. The USB3 ports can cause interference with the Wifi if the dongle/flashdrive is unshielded. The USB ports are also underpowered and struggle to run some portable hard-drives (in my case an SSD in a 3rd party enclosure) Both of these problems can be fixed using a hub and a USB3 y cable.

The internal storage was the biggest problem for me initially but has been mostly solved by using this a MicroSD Adaptor that sits flush in the base also sometimes the screen detachs if I sneeze or jar it in a similar way and takes a second before I can use the keyboard again.

Despite the above issues I am very happy with the device. The dock works great and computer is a pleasure to use as both a laptop and a tablet. I work on it, play games on it, read comics on it and if it broke today I would go out and buy it again.

> Which one are the "best"

Depends what features you want the most. Some cameras are "best" for sheer video quality, others are "best" in a two-camera setup, others are "best" in terms of being able to copy videos off of the camera on-the-fly....

> how they work (do you have to buy space to save the video and just basic information, I know, stupid questions)

Most dashcams record to a microSD card. Some will come with a card included, but it's recommended that you buy your own - a "high endurance" card with at least 32 GB of storage.

The dashcam will record video to the card non-stop. Even when the card fills up, the dashcam will just start overwriting the oldest videos with newer ones.

Most dashcams have an "emergency save" button which will cause the currently-recording video to be saved to a special folder which is protected from automatic overwriting.

Typically the most straightforward way to access your dashcam videos (e.g. to save for court or to post on YouTube) is to pull the card out of the camera, and pop it into a USB card reader on your computer.

I've had really good luck with the Vilros starter kits off of amazon. They give you a good combination of stuff cheaper than the parts on their own. This is the last one I got:

https://www.amazon.com/Vilros-Raspberry-Complete-Starter-Black/dp/B00MV6TAJI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1481083146&sr=8-2&keywords=vilros+pi+kit

Comes with a power adapter and SD card. It also comes with an HDMI cable to hook it to a TV. Since it's a Pi 3 (the latest model), it has wifi built in. As long as he has a usb keyboard he can use, this kit should be pretty much everything he needs to get up and running.

You might want to make sure his computer has an SD card slot (like you use to get pictures of of camera memory cards) to download and load the operating system onto the SD card. Most laptops have one, look for a little slot that says "SD". If not, get him a cheap USB one like this:

Lol i actually found one of your threads on it. I'm curious when people say to format it, but am finding some posts stating you shouldn't format the sd cards on their own. But there are several add ons out there that sit in the SD card slot and add storage to your computer. https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-JetDrive-Storage-Expansion-TS128GJDL330/dp/B00MTHLURE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484262147&sr=8-2&keywords=Transcend+jetdrive+lite

You really can't go wrong with any of them - but this model is a good "starter" Mac that gets a lot of people to join the dark, I mean, good side. Even if you got that model used from eBay or even Gazelle or Swappa I'd still recommend this model.

u/YouthMin1 · 1 pointr/mac

It's a little more than you might spend for it on eBay or Craigslist, but newegg.com is a reputable site, and you won't have the hassle of dealing with scammers or anything along those lines.

As for wether or not it would be a good upgrade, across the board the answer is yes, with the exception of storage capacity. That said, the SSD will be a much faster internal storage, and if you need more storage, you can always add something like this to your SD card slot.

It will be more than capable of editing HD videos, and should even handle smaller 4k videos just fine. If your budget is under $1,000, this wouldn't be a bad machine to buy.

That said, have you considered looking into selling your current machine and maybe going for something a little newer?

Yes, Ubuntu is very flexible with the location of your install as long as it remains plugged in while the device is on.

>Also, could I buy an SSD (but not an SSD meant for the NUC), one of these: link2

Yes, but you could also put that SSD in some models of NUC like this model.

>and plug it into the NUC with one of these cables:

>And then install Ubuntu on that?

yes, but you could have better success with an external enclosure that stores the whole drive rather than that model that is meant for hotswapping. Like this.

Just a few weeks ago I modded my BW iPod 4th Gen. I used this SD to CF adapter, and this CF to IDE adapter. Sadly, it looks like it's out of stock. The one that the other person linked looks good. Always read the reviews.

I also recommend checking out this thread over at MacRumors. It has a lot of invaluable information about this mod. OP did it with a photo, but many others have done it with BW 4th gens, and there are even a few third gens. Reading through it gives you an idea of the issues other people have run into and how to fix them. Also a good place to go if you run into issues.

Best of luck to you! Let me know if you have any questions.

You can always buy an SD card reader for like 10-20$ in your local electronic store.

I actually bought myself this https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Reader-RS-MMC-Support-Warranty/dp/B006T9B6R2/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483024542&sr=1-5&keywords=SD+card+reader

Its just a few bucks and it works perfect.

Steelhax and Basehax are pretty easy to setup once you have acces to Homebrew. Steelhax works with a free to play game from the Eshop so you dont even need to spend money on it.

Basehax works fine aswell. There are guides for both secondary entrypoints in OP's post.

Lucky you! Mine is currently being held hostage at my local post office, because of course it arrives in town on a holiday! For the screen protector I’d recommend a Zagg. That’s what I’ve had on my surface pro 4 for the last few years and it’s great. I’ve got one sitting at home waiting to be put on my surface book 2 once it gets here. And if you’re wantinf to get a Micro sd card I’ve heard really good things about these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT7ECA2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KGvJBbPK46YDP

They’re nice because they sit flush with the side of the surface book and they match the silver aesthetic. The one I linked to is for the 13.5 inch though, so just change it over to the 15 inch model

I like this adapter, it fits perfectly in the memory stick slot, unlike some others which stick out ever so slightly.

You'll want a pretty sizeable SSD for offloading pictures quickly as well as their in-use storage while editing.

You'll probably also want to set them up with a pretty sizeable hard drive because professional grade photos eat up space quick. I'd also highly recommend setting up a RAID1 for them to protect them in case of hardware failure and minimize downtime for them. Along with that, make sure they have serious backup plan in place, and if they don't make arrangements for them whether that be an external drive, or something like CrashPlan if they have fast internet.

Processor requirements typically aren't too crazy for doing standard photo adjustments (color balancing, etc), they'd likely be fine with and i5 or R5 and higher, but if they are trying to batch convert a bunch of photos between file formats often (like they shoot in raw, but deliver finals in JPG), a faster processor will help with that significantly.

RAM requirements are typically more dependent on the user's workflow. A single picture open to edit doesn't take much. But I've seen some photographers that open one picture, edit it, then move to the next, and I've seen others that have 100s of pictures open at once and are constantly flipping back and forth. That second user needs a lot more ram then the first.

Biggest consideration will be the monitor, you'll want something with decent color, probably an IPS panel, and if you can afford something professional grade that come factory calibrated, or you can add a colorimeter to the build, that'd be a solid choice.

Also consider including a high quality USB 3 card reader like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VAGX6MW It significantly helps speed up the offload of their data from their camera to the computer.

u/MoogleMan3 · 85 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Great deal!

Another fantastic deal is the 200GB for $34.99. It's a good day to grab either.

And FYI, as soon as you get any microsd card, run it through h2testw to see if it's legit (if it's sold and shipped by amazon it most likely is the real deal), and then crystaldiskmark to test the speed. Make sure to use a usb 3.0 port and card reader.

u/that_fury · 3 pointsr/Filmmakers

Not a Mac, but my set up is a Surface Book with dGPU, 256GB SSD, 8GB of RAM with an i5 processor.

Then I use a 200GB Micro SD for extra storage when the slot is free, with this nifty little adapter. The adapter is also available for earlier Macbooks too.

Really just depends what you're going for. At the end of the day, software is software. Pick whatever suits your tastes in terms of hardware, as long as it's a bit of a powerhouse when you need it to be.

I chose the Surface Book for it's incredibly well calibrated display, and 1700:1 contrast ratio.

Also, it's pretty.

u/themraustin · 2 pointsr/Surface

It works great for me. The biggest advantages over the SP4 are the battery life, screen size, and form factor. The 128gb can feel limiting sometimes, but I got this for external memory (since I never use SD cards). It fits fine on small college desks. The battery is about 10 hours with 50-75% brightness and light use, plenty for a full day of classes.

I should mention that MS advertises a 1 year battery life for the pen. This might be true (I haven't had it for a year), but the included battery only had enough charge for a month. It uses an AAAA battery too, which isn't generally sold in stores. So I recommend ordering a few AAAA batteries (I think I got a 4-pack for $5-10) just in case.

This. A lot of people use:

Has the added benefit of a microSD reader which allows you to put all your games onto a card and frees up your jump drive for kernel updates when the time comes (instead of backing up and formatting every kernel update). Personally ordered this when I reached Psycho Mantis and it worked like a charm, makes the setup look cleaner too. Honestly didn't know about the statue thing haha

u/mdaffin · 280 pointsr/raspberry_pi

BIOS and now UEFI are a bit of firmware designed to make it easy and convenient to boot typical computers with possibly removable storage on a vast array of different hardware and to be able to toggle and change different settings. They are both quite large and require an extra dedicated chip on the board which costs a small amount and takes up valuable real estate on the board (and larger boards cost more).

BIOS or UEFI firmware is required by x86/64 systems as the CPU is not able to bootstrap itself and so requires an external chip to do so.

The ARM chip in the PI however has its own internal firmware that bootstraps the CPU and rest of the system with out the need for an extra chip. This firmware is programmable but there is limited space for complex firmware like traditional BIOS and UEFI firmware. As such they tend to use simpler firmware that can boot from a single device in a set way with no way to configure this after boot most of the time. The pi chose to load from an SD card instead on some ROM chip on board to make it easy to install to and backup images on the device and be able to swap out the os by simply changing the SD card. It also moves the storage off the device reducing its stand along cost as you have to buy the storage separately.

Sd cards where likely chosen as they are cheaper the HDD or SSD which are far to large for a position typical use case, require more power and are much more bulky. Though I don't know their actual reasoning.

On the pi 3 they added experimental support for booting from a USB device which you have to enable explicitly (and cannot disable). This is a new addition to the onboard firmware and was likely harder to write and fit inside CPU which is likely another reason they started with SD cards.

> I always lose that micro-to-full sized SD adapter too

If your laptop has a full sized SD card slot then just store the adaptor in there when not in use. Otherwise you can tape/bluetack it to your positive case or just store it inside the case or even on your PC/monitor.

You can also get SD card to usb adaptor like this and attach it to your keychain.

That's why I've had to use SD cards in an adapter in Slot B. It's an extra step, but it actually hasn't caused me any trouble (to my surprise). I got an SD to CF adaptor and use the Apple branded SD to iPhone card reader.

I have one of these in all of my cameras.

And then I pop the card out and into one of these.

This has been 100 percent reliable for four years, and the best way I've found to move only selected photos from my camera to my phone on the fly.

One nice benefit to running an SD card in one slot has been how cheap giant SD cards are, too. When I'm on assignments where I do video it's nice to have a giant backup available.

  1. I'm not sure if your drive is lockable or not but most SATA drives are.
  2. Chimp will format the partitions for you. (C,E,F,G etc.)
  3. There's a Startech adapter that seems to be the most reliable. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EOJNGC2/ref=twister_B01JZ8Z7C8
  4. Chimp will format the drive to FATX for you.

The adapter has jumper settings for master/slave/and cable select. When cloning your original drive you'll want to set the adapter to slave. You'll also need an 80 wire IDE cable. Using the original 40 wire cable doesn't work with SATA drives.

Lastly you'll need a molex Y splitter to power both hard drives at the same time while cloning. Also make sure you have an original Microsoft controller. I've heard 3rd party controllers don't work with Chimp, though I can't verify this since all my controllers are Microsoft S controllers.

I have the Sentey USB 3.0 10 port hub, which is 7 ports of USB 3.0 goodness and an additional 3 ports for charging devices (the hub is powered by a 12V 4A adapter). Anker makes a nice hub too.

Add the Transcend USB 3.0 SD/Micro SD card reader for the SD card reader.

As far as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are concerned, you're better off getting something like this Gigabyte PCI-E card which will give you 802.11ac support as well as Bluetooth 4.2.

I got you fam. I followed Nintendo’s support documentation on this (https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27595/~/how-to-transfer-data-between-microsd-cards-for-use-on-nintendo-switch). I was moving around 40GB from my old 64GB to my new 256GB card. To do this I needed to buy a usb reader alongside my microSD card (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009D79VH4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MCeDCbV3G5PM2) so that I could actually access and move the data around. Some computers might have this slot already. I ended up using the SD adapter that came with the microSD card as well bc I felt weird shoving in the delicate micro card directly.

The whole process Nintendo listed out actually took quite a while - maybe like 4 hours tbh. The part that took the longest was a full OverWrite to reformat my new microSD card using their recommended 3rd party application (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/).

After everything was done, the data on the new card worked seamlessly. It was fairly simple, just slow! I’ve heard some people skip the reformat and have had success. I was too nervous to do that.

Feel free to DM me if you get stuck - I did this just two days ago so it’s top of mind.

The build quality on those adapters are all more or less the same. They're pretty cheapy. I initially purchased this one and the adapter cracked after several months. They're cheap enough that I just bought a couple of replacements. I saw an identical one on Canadian Amazon as well.

Note that the one you linked comes with a USB adapter and an SD card adapter as well, so if you don't need those extras it might be cheaper to buy them separately. Look around; in this case, might be better.

About the firmware, you're better off updating. With 6.61 you can get permanent CFW using Infinity. Also, the adapter you linked should work just fine on 6.61 despite what the product page says. The changes between 6.60 and 6.61 are basically non-existent.

The PS Store does not still work on PSP anywhere AFAIK. If you want to make a purchase you'll need to do it on another device then transfer it to your PSP either through Media Go on PC or through a PS3.

The security settings are just a parental control. AFAIK, there's nothing like a lockscreen for the console. To configure the parental controls, try 0000; it's the default. If not, you can reset the passcode by doing a factory reset of the console. Just go to settings > system settings > restore default settings. Wait for the system to restart, go to the security settings, enter 0000, and turn off parental control. I just looked at my console and it was set to level 9. For some reason, I never changed it, but it has never interfered with anything I've tried to play.

Apple decided to put a software power limit to the USB CCK (Camera Connection Kit) a few years ago. The hardware is capable of outputting 100ma, but Apple limited it to 20ma. The trick works by making it think that there are 4 ports instead of one, meaning the iPad gives the hub 80ma, and then the hub can give 80ma to the usb stick. I believe that is how it works anyway.

Might I ask where you will be getting the usb sticks from? Will they be given to you (in lectures or from friends etc), or is it so you can plug in a usb stick back and forth from a computer? The reason I ask, is if it is for your use, I have found that the SD card CCK is much better for this. The SD card reader has no power limit, so no hub is required and it works for any card (formatted in FAT32/HFS+) - so 128gb cards work, and most likely 256gb cards when they become reasonably priced :P. Its a lot less messy (only one cable sticking out), and for the times when I want to plug it into a computer with no SD card slot, I can use a USB 3 to SD card reader;

Something like this (I'm in the UK so not sure of the best US equivalents)
http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Information-Card-Reader-TS-RDF5K/dp/B009D79VH4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407942666&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+3+sd+card+reader

In terms of speed its the same as USB 2, and when it comes to mounting them in iFile its exactly the same as USB CCK. And I think the same price for the SD kit over USB and SD card prices are the same as USB sticks too.

Let me know whether that sounds better or if you still require USB. It really just depends on how often you are going to be doing it, I certainly wouldn't want to take out the hub in the middle of lecture or something - would kind of defeat the purpose of the mini :P.

Mac user here, I am going to be ordering a GoPro Hero 4 Silver in a couple weeks. While I am unsure of your Mac specs, I do know that my Macbook Air (2014) has a dedicated SD Card slot. I would recommend taking your SD card out of your GoPro and try to upload the photos/video directly from the SD card.

If your Mac does not have a dedicated SD Card reader, Amazon has the USB SD card readers pretty cheap.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: If you don't mind letting me know if this works since the only computer I have at the moment is a Macbook.

u/ThreeDigitIQ · 2 pointsr/technology

Nothing scientific, but I have had issues with write speeds and very 'hot to touch' drives. Now, before buying a new drive, I check the Amazon reviews. There is almost always a comment discussion about the perceived heat. In this case, my son yelped when his arm touched my sandisk. I went looking specifically for "cooler" usb 3.0 drives with a very small profile. I was lucky and found a review on amazon of someone else that compared heat for the SanDisk Ultra Fit CZ43 32GB USB 3.0 Low-Profile Flash Drive Up To 130MB/s Read- SDCZ43-032G-G46. It is important to note that I use the smallest profile drive I can find. That does not give much room for heat transfer. So, my heat issues could likely just be related to personal preference to slim form factor.

u/mredofcourse · 1 pointr/apple

As others have pointed out, making the connection is the easy part, it's the software that's the issue. The best way to deal with that would be a USB->WiFi device. There are plenty of those on Amazon, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00INMB23Q

It features a battery backup, SD card reader as well as USB ports all for $40.

But... You're a bit trapped by any device like this in terms of the software it's running and the app you have on your device. Also at issue would be how well the app or even if the app ran on an iPhone 4.

You need:

  • A RaspberryPi - newer versions have a better CPU (but you can get a Zero for $5). If you want to play N64, go with a newer Raspberry Model B.
  • A +5.1V micro USB power supply (for RetroPie, a 2.5A one works well)
  • A USB Keyboard
  • An HDMI cable
  • A gaming controller of your choosing (USB cord if you can/otherwise bluetooth)
  • An SD card - these can come pre-loaded if you shop around

    Optional:

  • A nice case (according to OP's friend, Legos).
  • SD Card Reader/Writer (if you didn't buy an SD card preloaded; some laptops have them)
  • A bluetooth dongle (for PS3/PS4/XBox/XBoxOne/etc.)
  • A wifi dongle (if you don't want a hard wired connection)

    Download RetroPie

    Follow video here:

    https://retropie.org.uk/documentation/installing-retropie/

Might I add, you can setup SSH on the retropie, so you can connect to the machine and upload ROMs without having to use a USB keyboard. Google for old ROMs, I've used LoveROMs in the past.

Total build time ~1-2 hours. Total cost $30 - $65.

  1. Get a USB card reader. I use this one from Kingston.

  2. I think the closest thing I've seen to nailing the Apple aesthetic for a PC case is the NCase M1. It's small and a little on the expensive side, but it's super clean. All the panels are aluminum as well.
u/TableSurface · 1 pointr/Surface

The Ars Technica review provides a more detailed overview, and I agree with their findings: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/11/surface-book-with-performance-base-a-lot-more-graphics-in-a-little-more-weight/ . The 965m is a massive step up from the original ~940m.

In short: The tablet portion is identical, battery life improved, no throttling, improved cooling to accommodate the 965m, fan noise slightly louder (but nothing unusual for ultrabooks).

One observation that I had is that the slightly heavier (and thicker) base also improves on the balance of the whole system. It doesn't feel like it wants to topple backwards as often when its in my lap.

Also: If you had a flush mount microSD adapter, I can confirm that it fits in the new base.

hmmm how about ebay, you can use a debit card with PayPal, just don't buy the sd card off ebay because it will be fake but an adapter should be safe to buy on ebay, you should be able to buy the sdcard locally, just buy from a reputable dealer in greece. Hello from a Greek living in Canada.

You can also go to a small computer shop in Greece and ask if they can order one for you, might cost more for their effort, but if you don't have a debit card/credit card then that's your only choice. Do you have any friends with a credit card/debit card/paypal? if so then ask them if they can order it for you.

You're probably not going to have much luck fitting the SATA drive into the device, even if you can find the right series of adapters.

I would suggest replacing the drive with an SD card in an SD-CF adapter into a CF to 1.8 IDE adapter. What you have is the same kind of drive used in the old iPods, so there's actually some demand out there for adapters for that interface. Readily sold online, even on Amazon.

CF to 50-pin 1.8 IDE

SD card to CF

And of course you'll need an SD card, but probably best to find one around the size of the old drive, like a 32GB or so.

Thanks for the link!

Have you had any issues with something like that? 1TB is huge for what I was expecting.

I was looking at something like this or this.

The added charge and USB or SD card ability I found appealing, although the Seagate is tempting.

u/LastSummerGT · 2 pointsr/ODroid

Correction, I ordered from AmeriDroid, the US vendor for the Odroid products.

Yep, they come ready to play out of the box, because it's annoying to set up the OS manually.

If you choose to get a blank eMMC here's what you need to do: go to the new and improved [wiki] (https://wiki.odroid.com/start) and click your product, in this case it's C2. Scroll down to the Software(OS) Release section and choose which OS you want followed by the specific version. Instructions to setup the OS image are under the **THIS** link. The eMMC modules are a great speed bump, though programming the OS onto them is a bit finicky when it comes to the USB adapter. I had to use a eMMC-to-SD adapter plugged into an SD-to-USB adapter. If you search around you'll find forums of tested adapters that pass/failed the image flashing.

Transcend was a popular one but I chose a cheaper one that still worked. Sorry if you already knew all this, I hated looking all this up so I figure'd I could save you some time.

Taken from the linked comments:

> Another fantastic deal is the 200GB for $34.99. It's a good day to grab either.

> And FYI, as soon as you get any microsd card, run it through h2testw to see if it's legit (if it's sold and shipped by amazon it most likely is the real deal), and then crystaldiskmark to test the speed. Make sure to use a usb 3.0 port and card reader.

u/HobGadlingson · 3 pointsr/photography

That sounds like a hardware problem to me. What are using to upload the images? What kind of computer are you using to edit the images? Are you copying images to a local drive? Or are you copying the images to an external drive?

I also have an a7iii. For me, I take the card out of the camera, and I put it into one of these. 70 or 80 RAW images usually takes two or three minutes to copy over. I am copying from a USB 3.0 reader through a USB 3.0 port to an external USB 3.0 drive.

You could try making sure that you’re not shooting uncompressed. But I really like shooting uncompressed, so I wouldn’t recommend that. Keep in mind that the image files from our cameras are huge. So if you are using an older computer and USB 1 or USB 2, it would be normal for it to take a while. Also, I don’t use Lightroom, so I can’t comment on its efficiency. I copied my images into file folders, and then I use adobe camera to process them. It works really well.

If you need a Memory Stick with more storage and have 30 dollars left over, consider buying this 128 GB Micro SD Card at https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-128GB-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B073JYC4XM/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=SD+CARD+128+GB+SANDSIK&qid=1558658866&s=electronics&sr=1-2-spell (Make sure to get it shipped by Amazon and not some other retailer for maximum chance of getting an official and not counterfeit card) along with a Micro SD Card to Memory Stick Duo adaptor like https://www.amazon.com/Funturbo-MagicGate-Playstation-Portable-Handycam/dp/B07F68FCHD/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=PSP+Memory+Stick+Adaptor&qid=1565311107&s=electronics&sr=1-3 to allow it to fit inside the PSP, and be patient while it tests your SD Card. Use h2testw to verify that the SD card is legitimate before using it in the PSP system. Counterfeit cards will show "The media is likely to be defective." on h2testw along with a large amount of bytes next to the word "DATA LOST."

u/Kristosh · 3 pointsr/Surface

Sounds like you've thought through every aspect! Now, I'm guessing you're not considering the Core m3 model? Because I believe that with all the accessories is still cheaper than the SB and it is a TERRIFIC device! The processor speed on an m3 is equivalent of i5's just a couple years ago, it's stout.

With what you've described, I'd go for the Entry Level 128GB SB and buy a 64/128GB mSD Card here which will sit flush with the body of the device!

I can totally get by with 128GB though, I was completely fine with the 64GB in my base-level SP3!

As far as SB accessories, you shouldn't need a battery pack. I get between 8-10 hours depending on usage and I can't imagine you have anywhere near 8 hours of classes in one day?

This is actually something I began last year and have only really posted a few teasers here and there. Well now that I've finally had time to clean it up and go back and add in the original cable I figured I'd share it with you all.

This "Stealth SD Mod" as I'm calling it, uses a MicroSD card and reader, however, you could just as easily use a small USB thumb drive in place of the MicroSD card and reader.

The way the stock USB cable connects to the inside of the controller actually presented itself as quite a problem, and not wanting to cut the cable, or destructively dremel away any of the controller (mainly due to my OCD) only made things harder. Fortunately, I was able to find a solution. Once assembled, this non destructive mod is Plug & Play.

This is actually an early prototype of something a little more advanced I'm working on.

Parts Required

  • Question: Does the controller have to be connected to Port 2?

    Answer:
    >Currently yes it must be connected to Port 2 (Player 2). The reason for this is when connected to Port 1 the system doesn't recognize the controller. This is something I think we can fix in a future update.

  • Question: Does the controller still function as a controller?

    Answer:
    >Yes, absolutely. Keep in mind however that the draw does exceed the allowed amount, so the USB Current Limit Mod is still required.

  • Question: What about USB Brown-outs?

    Answer:
    >While the power draw on this is incredibly low you'll still need to perform the USB Current Limit Mod in order to use this (Or use a hub, but that sort of defeats the purpose).

  • Question: Can you still use port 2 for other things like USB Thumb-drives, hubs etc?

    Answer:
    >Yes, absolutely.

  • Question: Can I bring my modded controller to a friends and play on their system with it?

    Answer:
    >Only if they have a powered USB hub or have performed the USB Current Limit Mod

  • Question: Does it throw off the balance of the controller at all?

    Answer:
    >The difference in weight is negligible (Stock 130g vs modded 136g).

I love a challenge like this - tight budget but packed with things we want.

We have the latest Ryzen 3600, 16GB of 3000 MHz RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, 8 GB graphics and a powerful wifi adapter all packed in a discreet case. However, I added a separate SD card reader off Amazon (rather cheap too) in lieu of looking for cases that had inbuilt SD card readers.

For the guides, Wololo is a great resource. They have tons of information. Or just google it.

For the 2000's you'll want to update to 6.61 and then use Davee's 6.61 Infinity. There are ton's of guides for installing it, and it is pretty straightforward.

For memory, use this and slap in a 64gb or 126gb microSD card

For batteries I bought 2 of these

So far they have been good, and I get about 5-6 hours of use, depending on what I am doing / playing.

One of them messed up the first time I put it in the PSP but I got in contact with the company on Amazon and they shipped me another no questions asked.

And you will only really need a pandoras battery if you want to use TimeMachine ( boot a different firmware than what is installed on your NAND ) or somehow brick one of the PSP's ( pretty hard to do if you are careful )

But do note, that the batteries I listed cannot be used as a pandoras battery ( they have a fake PCB that does not correctly read a serial number / can't be written to ) So you will have to find an original if you want a pandoras, or one of the ones sold specifically as a pandoras.

Edit: Formatting, and more information

  1. SDCard reader/writer - In order to write OS images onto the SDcard you'll need a writer on a PC to copy any software onto the SDcard before moving it to the Pi to boot.
  2. USB Power supply - The Pi Zero has low demands on power (random USB chargers may work) but it's a good idea to get a good power supply.
  3. USB OTG adapter - The Pi0 only has one micro-USB port (the other one is power in only). If you want to plug a normal USB device in you'll need an adapter.
  4. USB Hub - Since the Pi0 only has one USB port you'll need a USB 2.0 hub to plug in multiple USB devices, such as a keyboard, mouse and USB network dongle. If you plan on plugging in USB devices that need more power (like external USB harddrives) then you should get a powered USB hub.
  5. USB Network Adapter - Speaking of which, if you want Internet on the Pi0 you'll need a USB Wifi adapter or a 100M Ethernet USB adapter.

Or alternatively, you could use the Pi Zero's OTG Ethernet Gadget capabilities to connect your Pi0 directly to a PC/Mac using only a single USB cable: https://gist.github.com/gbaman/975e2db164b3ca2b51ae11e45e8fd40a

The only potential difficulty is if your Windows computer doesn't have a card reader. In that case, just buy a cheap card reader (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-Hi-Speed-Reader-FCR-HS4/dp/B00VAGX6MW) or leech off a friend who does.

The one i used was completely flush and allowed my to add my own SD card

Just make sure its for your modle (to get flush), also some report issues with sleep , never had the issue but i only used it to store movies, dropbox (or what ever i was using at the time .. this was 2013), games (Steam I think) and iTunes

advantage is that you always have it with you, also u might be able to encrypt it so that data protection can be taken care off

I would really encourage you to think about upgrading the hard drive after you softmod it. Playing backed games on discs can get expensive since most of the games are 6gb+. Even a 80gb IDE drive would be a massive help!

The hardest part of modding is finding a flash drive that works.

What you will need.

Flash Drive (should work)

Nice write-up! I just ordered a SB2 13.5" i7 with 256GB SSD and a micro SD card adapter:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT7ECA2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_uhWFAbD27M6MP

...almost a perfect solution except for the fact that I won't be able to reach the files while only using the tablet. It won't be a problem very often though, and I should be able to adjust my work flows accordingly.

u/RazHawk · 1 pointr/miniSNESmods

First off the controller you linked is a third party controller, not official nintendo. From what i've heard and read here is that 3rd party knockoffs don't work on the snes mini.

For the USB hub, i only use the angled otg adapter so I don't know about the hubs from experience. But the one always mentioned here as the best by others is from Inateck: https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8

u/PartyClass · -1 pointsr/PSP

You should just get something like this.

It's a Sony Memory Card shell that you can insert a microSD into. No need for solder. Works great, supports up to 64 gb, other ones might support more. Get 64 gigs for under $20

u/colbaltblue · 1 pointr/reddit.com

I haven't read anything about that yet, but as I understand it the x4 is still fairly new to market. My main interest is that this will make nand flash much cheaper and more dense, also extending the life of the SDHC form factor. All of my flash memory and readers are microSDHC. Also here is my favorite new reader which is smaller than the pico drives:

http://www.amazon.com/ELAGO-Mobile-Reader-World-Smallest-EL-RD-012/dp/B002HGFKR8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1255818584&sr=8-2&tag=fire-fox-20

(also it works for the Chumby!!)

u/ZenKantAC · 1 pointr/SVExchange

Are you free right now? I can help if you'll do a few battles so that I can check mine too. Oh and if you don't mind spending a little money the easiest way would be to just grab a cheap SDHC to USB adapter and use the KeySAV or KeyBV methods. There's a bunch on Amazon for like $7. Link

High FPS gaming = i7-7700K, and fast ram, and a gpu above the GTX 1060. Since the 1070 is overpriced currently I went directly to a GTX 1080. In Germany the 1080 Ti is too expensive anyway, which makes this the right pick. The disks are as requested, and the case is a good one, also fits colour-wise (black).

I would not add the SD card reader as a requirement to the case, too uncommon by now. Rather get an USB model like https://www.amazon.de/Transcend-TS-RDF5K-Kartenlesegerät-MicroSDHC-microSDXC/dp/B009D79VH4/, it only costs 8€.

For a gaming PC wifi is really not the right choice. You should connect via cable, and if ethernet is not an option look at powerline adapters. But you can add a wifi card like https://www.amazon.de/Gigabyte-GC-WB867D-I-Netzwerkkarte-Braun/dp/B00HXCGKZC/ if wifi is really the only way to get this machine online.

The display remains. You should get a 144Hz display, and if you really want a second one that one could be a regular 1080p 60Hz display, you won't play on the two at the same time, right? A sound combination would be https://www.amazon.de/AOC-G2460PF-Reaktionszeit-Displayport-FreeSync/dp/B01BV1XBEI/ + https://www.amazon.de/dp/B015510R4M/
u/kheszi · 1 pointr/prius

You don't need a laptop, just get an OTG USB hub that supports simultaneous access to multiple devices, like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468527555&sr=8-2&keywords=otg+hub

Then buy yourself one 256GB microSD card, and one 256GB SD card. Plug everything in, and now you have 500+GB of music available to any Android device that supports OTG USB interface. Connect to the car via Bluetooth and you're good to go.

u/BabyPuncher5000 · 3 pointsr/originalxbox

An IDE to SATA adapter, so you can use a hard drive or SSD that isn't 10+ years old and ready to kick the bucket.

I've had good luck using this one, just make sure you also replace the ribbon cable with an 80-conductor cable.

u/uzuhl · 6 pointsr/GameDeals

Getting one of these for my PSP was one of the best decisions I ever made for it when I started modding it.

It's worth so much more than it costs in entertainment value alone.

u/construktz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Then I would just get this Acer Chromebook 14.

It's very high quality for what it is and offers a 1080p IPS display in an all aluminum chassis with great battery life. You can backup photos from an SD card for sure. This one just doesn't have a built in card reader, so you'd just need something like this. It's cheap enough and you'd just need to plug the external into another USB port to do the transfer.

That, or you just sync stuff to Google Drive. Either way it'll do it for you.

u/FaberfoX · 2 pointsr/nexusplayer

I'm using one like this. I had issues ar first with the storage merging using a micro sd card, it would work for a little while and then stop being recognized, so I replaced it with a really old WD Passport 120GB USB HD I had and so far had no issues. With this hub, the drive works without needing an external power supply. I also tried just a micro USB otg adapter and a regular hub, but that didn't power the drive. I also used an ethernet usb adapter plugged into the hub until recently, when I replaced my router with an AC one. I haven't tried moonlight as I have an ati card, but remotr works pretty well.

u/Stupifier · 1 pointr/unRAID

Good Luck!

u/Deksloc · 1 pointr/Surface

I don't really play games on my computer, mostly just Civ, so it's one of the few games I have installed on the SSD. I actually just ordered the BaseQi microSD card adapter so the memory card will sit flush in the SB for more semi-permanent capacity. I'll just be using my memory card for regular files like documents and photos.

Programs that depend on fast read/writes, like games or photo/video editors or whatever, I plan to put right on the main SSD.

edit: Scratch that, I'll probably also put some emulators on the SSD, but I can put the games on the memory card, even if the read speed is slower than the SSD. It'll be easier that way to balance storage and performance, and it'll still be way faster than if I were using the original CDs/DVDs games would have come on.

Parts List - There is a decent list in brewpi docs as well but I will list what I bought below as well. BrewPi Doc's Build Planning

What I purchased:

Arduni Uno - RevC

RaspPi Model B

4GB SD Card
and SD Card Reader

2 Solid State Relays

LCD Module

BrewPi Arduino Shield You can buy this assembled for 10 more Euros. I chose to solder it myself.

2 DS18B20 Single Line Temp Sensors

Some kind of case to hold it all. BrewPi makes their own but I chose to hack up a cash box for all the electronics.

This does not include the things needed for the chamber (cooling and heating elements), the rectangular wall socket to hook up to the relays, wiring, etc. Amazon also may not be the lowest price for everything either so shop around.

u/suckingalemon · 1 pointr/PSP
  1. Sure. Look up a YouTube video. Cool custom housing options are available.

  2. Not sure about this as I own a 1000 and have actually never held a 3000. Regardless, there isn't much you can do about it.

  3. You could try this. It would allow the PSP to see both memory cards as one.

  4. I think that's a game dependant thing. Pretty sure the PSP digital Store has been closed though.

  5. I've never bothered with one. I just use the official little pouch thing.
u/Ythan · 1 pointr/AndroidQuestions

That's really weird. I haven't heard of a problem quite like that. If you have access to a PC with a microSD card reader, I would try and back up your data, reformat with the SD Card Formatter from the SD Association, restore your data, and see if that helps. If you don't have any way to read microSD cards on your PC, you might consider something cheap like this since it will make it a lot easier to deal with these kinds of problems in the future.

u/burfdl · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

If you look inside a rectangular USB key/port, you'll see four gold or silver stripes. Thats where the data/power goes, and the only parts that need to touch for a USB device to work. The metal 'box' around them is just to make it easier for us clumsy humans to plug in properly. You can actually get USB keys that have no box, like these micro-sd card ones that just wedge themselves between the 'tongue' of the usb port and the outer edge: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0028R3NCU/ref=psdc_430545031_t3_B001U7R1CM (not a BIFL recommendation btw; they're cute but break easily).
So, the box can be made of thick, strong metal in stead of very-conductive-but-pretty-weak metal, and survive for a long time.

u/Koofteh · 6 pointsr/TeslaModel3

Is that your delivery appointment?

I didn't have any 'introduction' appointment, just picked up my AWD from the dump warehouse on Powell Street. I've heard of people waiting literally all day to pick up their car at that location so my only advice would be to have nothing else planned. 😁

Also bring something for TeslaCam, you never know when an accident can happen. I was hit soon after getting my car and my dashcam stuff was still in the mail. I recommend a high-endurance microSD with a good quality card reader for long term reliability but for now you can just use any USB flash drive you hand handy.

u/Snoot_Boopins · 8 pointsr/octoprint

That kit is overkill if you are just running Octoprint and don't want a case. All the Pi needs is a power supply cable (for power, obvs), an sd card (which operates like the Pi's internal storage like an HDD/SDD in a standard computer), and a USB cable to connect to your 3d printer. This is assuming it is a Pi model that has a wifi antenna built in (all models after the Pi 3 B+ have this standard) otherwise you will need a wifi adapter or an ethernet cable to connect to your access point.

Outside of the Pi itself, you will need an sd card reader to flash Octoprint to the sd card.

Hope this helps!

Yea for one more euro might as well. Your HDD is fine as well.

As for that card reader. That's weird. Even my SD card reader gets warm, but too hot to touch? That's concerning. Since it's Kingston, I'm sure its ok but here's the one I have: Transcend 3.0 reader

And don't format after every use. That's overkill. Only format before using the card in your cam for the first time or if you have to switch the card between different cameras. You don't have to format very often.

u/D00zer · 1 pointr/answers

When you want to load a new OS on your eMMC there's a two-part adapter to get from the USB-A port on your computer to the eMMC chip.

  • The $9.90 item is definitely the first piece, a USB-A MicroSD card reader, I can't tell if it includes the second piece also..

  • The $1.50 item is just the second piece, the MicroSD to eMMC adapter, because many people already have a MicroSD card reader.

I already had this card reader and it works perfectly with the $1.50 MicroSD to eMMC adapter. Ameridroid lists them both separately and together, and when together it says "eMMC to microSD Adapter + Transcend USB3.0 reader/writer [0091 0106-NE]"

Just a note, that is very expensive. Idk about integrated solutions like the one mentioned above, and whether it's competitively priced, but you could put together a CD player, USB hub, and SD reader for much less money. And if you stacked them together, maybe taped them together or put them in a 3D printed enclosure, it wouldn't look much worse.

CD player: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83ZR7447

True, if you want to spend the money an m.2 drive can have huge capacity in a space around the size of a stick of gum.

Otherwise literally any 512gb stick of memory will achieve 4mb/s read/write. If space is your ultimate concern, get a microSD and an ultra compact USB reader. I've seen readers that store the microSD inside the port itself.

No, it isn't, and here's why:

This is $6, weighs less than a gram, has no moving parts to break and is smaller than a stick of gum. Much like the HDD shown, it too requires a laptop or desktop to be useful. This is handy.

This is $179, which is more than the DJI unit, but it has a built in card reader AND a battery so you can use it in the field AND wifi so you don't even need to dig out a cable when you get home. That is handy.

Any known issues with connections? It seemed to be the best rated around here.

I have this one and i definitely don't recommend it. I used it for about a week on my modded snesc and it never felt like there was a tight connection between the adapter and the snesc. I switched to the dev reccomended inatek one and it snaps in the back nice and snug both the snesc and the psc. Extremely helpful if you plan on removing the usb drive often to add games or update stuff.

I'd go with the i7. It is nearly twice as fast, because it is an 8th gen CPU. (5000 benchmark v. 9000 benchmark) and I think you'll encounter better battery life on it as well.

You can always opt for a 128gb microSD and the adapter it needs to expand storage for about $70.

I think its worth trying an adapter especially if you already have spare micro sd cards already. I have this one and it works well for me. Duo adapter

I also got a couple of these and the one I have tried so far worked fine as well. duo adapter from ebay

u/PM_ME_MEMES_PLZ · 2 pointsr/ipod

ok so for the cf adapter I used the digigear found here. it works great and would highly recommend. for the sd card itself I used a 128gb sandisk microsd with an adapter. Now for the battery, I bought an ipod mini on ebay found here. Honestly I really cheaped out on the battery and so far for the day I've been using it it's been good. Reviews for the product are pretty mixed so I'll PM you in a few days after I've seen if I got fucked or not. It was $6 though so worst case scenario I'll bitch at the seller if it fails and buy one from ifixit for $15.

I really like my GO for travel, but M2 sucks and the 3000 is really a much better gaming experience. The chiclet buttons on the GO kind of suck and if you have normal human-sized hands, it's hard to hold. With softmods and CFW, you can do a non-permanent on just about any motherboard now. 3000 was three steps or so. Easy. There's no weird storage splitting (GO has onboard and M2) so you don't have to move around your saves or plugins. With a 3000, you can get dual and single memory card adapters. I have both and they work. You can go up to 128gb now, I think, but it's slow if you go that high. 32gb is easy and fast.

3000 has fewer emulation issues. I find that my GO has dumb random bullshit that for some reason crashes the unit with some SNES games. Even scrolling in the menu causes crashes ONLY on the GO.

IMHO, 2000 is best, but 1000 feels best in my hands. 3000 is okay, GO is really great for travel because it's so compact.

u/emoinatuxedo · 1 pointr/PSP

When it read the 27GB was that with the 32GB card or a 64GB card?

Yeah it may be a dud. I've never owned a Cr5400, just generic ones, but it's possible to exceed 64 GBs, I myself have dual 128GB cards working. Here's the adapter I'm currently using.

Also here's my general spiel on adapters:

  • To get the PSP to recognize two cards: format both cards in the adapter with the PSP ('System Settings'/'Format Memory Stick'), then swap the cards and format again (may require one more swap and format).

  • After loading files onto the cards, don't swap them as you could corrupt your data.

  • You won't have the advertised speeds of the mSD cards while transferring via the PSP (It'll most likely cap around 6-7 mbps).

  • You may want to buy more than one adapter since they break easily.

  • You'll experience slow down when booting up or opening large folders (the larger the card(s) the longer the boot up) [NOTE- you won't experience slow down when booting or running games]. Additionally you'll experience slowdown when booting up Homebrew that looks at the entire PSP directory (e.g. PSP Filer).

To help mitigate boot up time, go to the 'recovery menu'/'configuration' and enable 'hide pic0 & pic1.png'. Additionally try using GamesCatagoryLite and go to 'system settings'/'Catagory mode' and change it to contextual.

Here is the dictionary definition of a motherboard. "a printed circuit board containing the principal components of a computer or other device, with connectors into which other circuit boards can be slotted." Another way to think about it I'd that a motherboard is the foundation of a computer. Every other part of the computer (excluding the case) slots into or goes on to the motherboard. It is what provides the connections between all of the parts.

As far as an SD card reader, I don't know of any modern motherboard that has one on the back or a specific connection for one. Since you don't have any 5.25 inch drive bays on the s340 I would suggest getting a USB SD card reader. This is an example of one- https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006T9B6R2/ref=psdcmw_516872_t1_B000Q3IUV2

Moving the saves over is pretty easy. You'll need to softmod your WiiU. It's only temporary and very easy to do. You just need an SD Card 32GB or less and a USB to SD Card adapter.

If you have games that you want play online, I'd also recommend dumping: your files needed for online, mii heads, and friends list app while you're at it.

Here's a video guide for that.

Now after having watched that video you should know what I'm talking about going forward:

You just need to open the homebrew launcher with the browser exploit and then launch 'Mocha CFW'. Then you'll be back at the homebrew menu. Now, launch 'SaveMii Mod' and then you can use that to dump all your savedata to the SD Card. Then you can plug the SD Card into your PC with a USB to SD Card Adapter and move the files into Cemu.

Here's a video showing how to use SaveMii Mod (start from 2:03).

Just remember to launch 'Mocha CFW' before launching 'SaveMii Mod'.
___

Then (obviously) you need to dump your game(s) from your WiiU to get them on your PC.

You can dump them with FTPiiu everywhere.

The 00050000 folder stores installed games.
The 0005000E folder stores installed updates.
The 0005000C folder stores installed DLC.

If it's a disc game, then you'll need to use DDD. Here's a video guide showing how to use it. Select the disc option.

But you'll still need to dump the DLC and updates with FTPiiu everywhere.

Actual memory sticks are going to be almost impossible to find in a physical store, and if you did find them they are going to be very expensive for very little storage space. You should get a micro SD card adapter and a micro SD card, they are much cheaper and can hold a lot more games on them. This is the one I use and it works perfectly. Just make sure that you get a large SD card and leave the adapter in the PSP, they can be brittle. You can use a USB cable to transfer games onto the PSP.

I would recommend an SD card that's sits flush with the MacBook Pro, you can get up to 128gb. Make sure you pick the MacBook you have. Link below. I have one of these. u/the_settlements · 3 pointsr/PSP

If it says pro-c in the system information after turning the system on (not from sleep mode) then it's permanent.

What the CFW does is allow you to use homebrew apps and games as well as pirated games (which is obviously not condoned, but who listens to us?) There should be instructions online on how to put homebrew apps and games on the PSP. Last i done it, it was a basic drag and drop between folders.

As for the memory you can use any Pro-Duo if it's a PSP and M2 if it's a PSP Go. There's also Pro-Duo adapters that allow you to use 2 MicroSD cards in it. Probably the best way to go since the max Pro-Duo card out there, I believe, is 32GB.

I can tell you from my own experience that these converters work perfectly:

You can get this usb sd card reader from amazon for $6. It works pretty well.

u/Threnulak · 4 pointsr/DataHoarder

No problem. Here's a rundown of the fastest cards, but you're going to pay a price in size for those speeds.

Honestly, though, I've never needed anything super fast. I don't shoot HD video directly to my SD card, I don't run apps from my SD card, and I don't move large blocks of data around all that often (and when I do, I use a USB 3.0 adapter).

EDIT: Here are some more benchmarks that better show the differences between the different kinds of speeds.

u/mh732 · 2 pointsr/Modding

IDE hard drives were the standard back in the ps2 era and today, they're really hard to find and extremely limited when it comes to max capacity compared to today's standard, SATA.

A better option is to pick up this compact IDE to SATA adapter from StarTech (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EOJNGC2/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_ZWYDybGVEG2KF)

I got one for both my softmodded ps2 and chipped og Xbox and it allowed me to connect a modern day 2TB 2.5" SATA hard drive perfectly. The HDD and adapter fits inside the ps2 enclosure with room to spare. A much better option than spending a fortune on a larger old IDE hard drive on eBay.

Another Alternative:

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro 13" with 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM and a Transcend JetDrive Lite 330 (128 GB) installed:

https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-JetDrive-Storage-Expansion-TS128GJDL330/dp/B00MTHLURE

I use the Transcend JetDrive Lite to store my large mp3 collection, pictures, documents, etc. and I really like it. It sits almost flush in the SD-CARD slot and out of the way.

My 2015 Macbook Pro is set up with 2 partitions (Sierra & Windows 10) and I use the Jetdrive to store most of my documents, music, pictures, etc. on it. The Transcend JetDrive Lite 330 is factory formatted as exFAT so both MacOS and Windows can access it.

If you have a 15" display:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K73NT1C/ref=s9_acsd_al_bw_c_x_3_w

This is another storage idea that may save you buying a new SSD you do not use your SD-Card slot...

u/KazakiLion · 2 pointsr/PlaystationClassic

Interesting project idea! I’m not sure you could get it down to that size without a custom PCB, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. You’d need a USB-A Out Breakout Board, a USB-A In Breakout Board, a small Micro SD Card Reader, a small USB Hub PCB, and a 3D printer. If you stuck to using breakout boards, you could still probably get something close to the size of an original PlayStation memory card.

u/GER_PalOne · 2 pointsr/3dshacks

I have a question. I read on multiple guides that you need specific card Readers like this and others saying just use any reader. In the Pic the guy also uses just the normal smallSD to bigSD adapter so obviously not that mentioned in THIS GUIDE. So whats true now?

u/JezzaX86 · 2 pointsr/Surface

I personally got a 256gb SD card and mater to it to the Base QI adapter. It works for my needs and is far more mobile than an external SSD. The drawback to any external storage on the surface book though, is that it becomes inaccessible when removing the screen, so the other alternatives are to look at cloud storage options such as One Drive, which will cost more long-term due to subscription costs. So, I'd suggest weighing up what suits you best.

As for the contacts, use a Q-tip and LIGHTLY go over them with specialised contact cleaner.

u/kims681 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Okay, so if you're going to video edit on Final Cut Pro, then go with the MacBook. FCP just works much better and is only on Mac. However, if you want to edit on Adobe Premiere, then go with this model. It has a 940M dGPU which helps with video editing.

If you want more storage, try to look for a different configuration with 512GB on other retailers. Or, you can use an SD card to hold documents and movies with BASEQI Aluminum MicroSD Adapter for Microsoft Surface Book https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT7ECA2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KgaBzbQDD4KX3 which allows it to not stick out of the laptop.

u/iamkoalafied · 3 pointsr/3DS

No problem! Just in case you don't know, you will need to use your computer to transfer data from your old sd card to your new sd card. If you don't have an sd card slot on your computer, you will need to buy an external one to do the transfer. They are pretty cheap. This is the one I got but there are a lot of others, just make sure it accepts regularly sized sd cards and not just micro sd card.

Surface Book 2 i7 here.

As a traveling programmer, light gamer, and part time student it's probably my ultimate laptop. I can take it out in a coffee shop and not get stares and then game in my hotel room on a TV.

I can flip the screen around to get a nice drawing pad to map out my work. When I'm at my office I have a surface dock that lets me hook up two extra displays. Theres plenty of IO and also has expandable storage. The keyboard is much nicer than any Macbook atm as well.

Here's a must have for any Book owner.

The only downside is dont upgrade to 1903 just yet as microsoft still hasn't patched the GPU bug. Other than that I think it ticks all of the boxes.
