If you prefer a high sRGB coverage and would be okay with matte screen, then I would recommend this ASUS Zenbook because of the following:
The lid is made from brushed metal, it can be opened easily with one hand and the case is made from metal as well, so overall build quality is great.
The display part flexes easily, and the keyboard bends a little if you are hard typer.

It is very light at 2.5 lbs, it has 2 USB 3, one USB type C, HDMI, and micro SD.
USB type C doesn't support Thunderbolt 3 or charging and it also doesn't support DisplayPort Alternate mode which means you can't connect external monitors using the port.
The ram is not upgradeable, so what you buy is what you get, major con if 8 is not enough for your usage.

Keyboard has four-stage backlight and page Up/Down, Home and End keys don't have their own keys, meaning you would need to use Fn keys to use them, and Key travel is short and feedback is very mushy so it is not the best option if you are used to mechanical keyboard or fast/frequent typer.

Touchpad very accurate and fast as it comes with Microsoft’s Precision, and supports multitouch gestures.
Touchpad has a glass surface which is very smooth and the buttons are firm.

Screen doesn't have PWM-flickering (which is a good thing), and it is very bright.
Color coverage is above average at 93% sRGB and 60.4 RGB like you want and it’s suitable for video editing, and photoshop.
High brightness and the matte display makes it great for outside usage.
Screen is IPS, has great viewing angles.

Because of how small and light the laptop is, it does throttle under intensive work for long period of time (over 30 mins in intensive work), but in short bursts it works very well.

Fan gets loud under heavy work, but not to the point where it would be annoying.

Sound quality is good, but bass is minimal.

Battery supports quick charge ( a big plus), and Asus claims it can charge up to 60% in less than 50 mins.

Battery life on average usage had from 7.5 to 9.5 hours.
NVIDIA MX150 which is one of the best for this range but still not great for newer games Benchmark(use the same website to check the benchmarks of the other GPU from the right hand list), and it will run minecraft, and stardew valley smoothly.

And if you prefer a glossy screen but lower sRGB coverage, then I would recommend this Acer Swift 3
NVIDIA MX150 which is one of the best for this range but still not great for newer games Benchmark(use the same website to check the benchmarks of the other GPU from the right hand list) and it will run your games smoothly.

the casing made of brushed aluminum and looks very premium.
It comes with 2 USB type 3 and 1 USB type C.

The keyboard is a chiclet keyboard, typing on it feels spongy, but you get used to it quickly and it’s backlit like you want.

Drag and drop sometimes doesn't work as intended, but that is easily fixed with software.

Screen is glossy Full HD IPS, with very good viewing angles, the screen flickers at 200 Hz in a brightness level of 20%. if you have sensitive eyes might find this unpleasant (or you can get a headache if you are really sensitive).

The main (and maybe only) con about this laptop is how dim the screen can get, it is not usable in direct sunlight, and the coverage of colors is average (39% RGB and 61% sRGB).

Has very good heat management, and it doesn't throttle.

Speakers provide very clear sounds, and the maximum volume is pretty loud.

Battery life is very good at around 9-11 hours of usage on light to medium usage.

If you prefer more powerful GPU, then I would recommend this [Dell Inspiron] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CD3MRZD/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20) because it has a great balance between value for money, battery life, and very good performance, here is a little detailed review of it:
Screen hinge in the center, which makes the display very stable.
You can open the display with one hand without any problems.

Comes with 3 USB and 1 USB type C that supports Thunderbolt.

Comes with Intel Wireless-AC 9560 which promises 1.7Gb/s but only delivers 485MBit/s (shouldn't be an issue unless you have such a very high speed and the need for it).

Easily upgradeable since you only need to remove a single screw to access the back of the laptop to replace/upgrade ram and storage.

Comes with chiclet keyboard with average sized keys.

The typing noises is not audible (except for the space key).

The touchpad is large and defined by red accent, the keys (left, right) are in the touchpad itself (not separate keys), and gives a quiet clicking sound when pressed and supports gesture controls with several fingers.

Display is the main con of the unit, it is not super bright (to the point of issues in direct sunshine).

Screen has low sRGB and RGB coverage (57% sRGB and 36% AdobeRGB) and low constractions.

Screen doesn't come with PWM or Screen flickering (it is a good thing because screens that have it put strain on your eyes).

Screen is IPS so it has good viewing angles, but also has slow response rate when compared to TN panels.

Fan noise is another small con, while the sound is low under light usage, it does get loud while gaming but not to the point of it being annoyingly loud.

Heat management on it is very good, and its main selling point along with value for money, CPU/GPU don't throttle(much it is still within acceptable level) and don't get hot to the point of internal damage (however, it does hot enough to be uncomfortable on your lap).

Speakers are user facing, so there is no muffled sound, however, it doesn't offer much base.

It comes with GTX 1060 Max Q which will run your games on medium to high settings. You can check the below link to see how the 1060 Max Q GPU (scroll down for the FPs and settings expected or ctrl+f then type the name of your game).

So, I'm guessing you want a one-for-all machine for college?

If you want to maximize build quality: XPS 15. The 7300HQ ones will be a good option. It's got long battery life, and a decent GPU to boot. Too bad it's running an SSHD combo. An SSD based system would be much faster

If you want the best performance at the smallest amount of money, your suggestion was already nice, but if possible, I'd recommend stepping down from that NVMe drive and going instead with a bigger SSD if you can. If the customizer doesn't allow for more, this combo is a very solid option for the price already though

If you want to maximize performance, then the Sager would be the best option imo as it's customizable and very easily upgradeable. If you're a bit of a storage freak, this thing can contain 2 M.2 2280 SSDs, with 1 slot capable for NVMe drive, and 2 more HDD/SSD slots in the 2.5" form. Other than that, there's the GL502 from Asus, same performance basically but slimmer since it accomodates only 1 SSD (M.2) and 1 HDD/SSD

If you want the cheapest possible option: HP Pavilion Power 15 At $700 this isn't gonna be wrong. It's cheap, cheaper than the lowest end Dell 7567, but it comes at a price. Build quality won't be as solid as the Dells, but it will have all the features it has. Tbh, I won't go HP unless I am really strapped for cash, or if I'm willing to go big and get the Envy, Spectre, or Omen series.

Alright, budgets aside, the fastest machine would be the Asus and Sager (Tied in first place), Dell Inspiron 7567, and lastly there's the XPS 15 and the HP (both tied in 3rd place).

But it's not so simple. See, considering your workload, you're already fine with a 1050 since you don't exactly run AAA titles anyway. The GPU should have some breathing room for those games but not by a big margin. But there's another thing, you're doing Photoshop, and also you're probably be bringing this to classes as well, so you need some strong battery life.

The XPS fits the bill. Not only it has an accurate, good looking screen, it also boasts a strong battery life. The lower end model would probably still last you 6 hours while the rest of the pack probably will only last for 3 hours and 4 hours tops. Then there's also the size, even though they're all 15 inchers, the XPS is actually slimmer since the screen is nigh-bezelless. If you're still dreaming of the AAA titles, there's a TB3 port for all your eGPU needs (Wait for Akitio or PowerColor to release their take on eGPU enclosures though. Razer's solution is too expensive). If you've saved enough, the XPS actually makes up for a very futureproof system. If you can squeeze $100 more from the budget, I'd recommend aiming for the i7 equipped version since it's gonna last you longer and since you're doing productive work as well, the hyperthreading might see some utilization.

The second recommendation would fall to the Sager. It boasts a more accurate screen than the Asus. Performance-wise it's more powerful than the XPS due to the stronger 1060 GPU inside. This will be apparent in games and in video rendering in Premiere, but not much else otherwise. Build quality on this is pretty solid, but it really lacks battery life. I'm using the stronger brother of the laptop (One with 1070) and I can only get 3 hours at max with the iGPU running. Babying it will give me 4 hours but it stays on standby pretty much half the time. Unless you're going to use the battery as some sort of UPS, the performance of this thing won't shine. It's a bit like a hungry V8 Mustang Cobra. It's fast, yes. But it also guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow. The XPS on the other hand, is like a nimble BMW M4. It's stylish, probably not as fast but it's certainly much more frugal than the brash American.

So welcome to SugegstAlaptop, see you have taken my suggestion to come over here. As it relates to your question, for a laptop to be used for gaming and video editing especially , you need to get a quad core processor- preferably an i7 along with 12 GB RAM or more-- 16 GB would be great .. For gaming, you don't seem to be a serious gamer, but still, I recommend a dedicated graphics card.,, Based on your budget, which actually is a very good one, this ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW 15" 4K Touchscreen Laptop would be an awesome pick for you. It has a great processor, excellent 16 GB RAM, a brilliant 512 GB SSD which will provide so well needed speed , and a nice gtx 960 dedicated graphics card for gaming... One of the things that stand out about this laptop is it's amazing build quality which centers around it's full aluminum body-- this laptop is super durable, sleek and aesthetically pleasing. It also has a full 4k resolution which is a great feature to have in video editing as it ensure videos are seen in the highest possible resolution...The touch screen this laptop has as well, can be a huge advantage in video editing.

A good gaming laptop, first and foremost has a good GPU, so starting with a 1060, then 1660, 1070, 1660ti, 2060 etc... So between 600 and 800, you could probably find a 1060 pretty easily.

Secondly you want a good processor (an i5 should be fine, look for an 8th gen, like the 8300H) I'd stay away from AMD/Ryzen processors, their laptop stuff is pretty garbage, their desktop stuff is phenomenal though.

Thirdly, 8gb of ram is fine, but keep in mind you may want to upgrade a few months to a year down the line (installing RAM is super easy, just YouTube it)

Fourthly, an SSD is really nice for gaming (vs an HDD). Alot of the laptops you look at will have 128gb of SSD + 1TB of HDD. While that will help your machine boot quickly (windows will be installed on the faster SSD) there is not enough room on that boot drive for many games, so you'll most likely be putting them on the HDD which will cause slower load times. I'd rather have 256gb of SSD alone than 128gb of SSD + 1TB of HDD. You can always upgrade your SSD later though and can get a fairly decent 1TB one for $100 or so (not quite as easy as RAM usually but still pretty easy, and there should be plenty of YouTube videos on that as well)

Fifthly do not worry about getting a 4k screen or whatever, there are no laptops than can utilize 4k to it's fullest on any games more recent than 2012, and those are beastly machines.

60hz screen is perfectly fine when you're on a budget, but 144hz is always nice to have if you're machine can handle it.

I can't think of anything else...

Edit:. This would be a good option:
ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop FX504 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JF6HRJ1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1ronDbVTAD49G

Edit 2: this one as well, I had almost this exact laptop, but mine had an i7 and 16gb of RAM, I traded it in only because it wasn't powerful enough for the intensive 3d modelling I do for work. Really nice build quality and a super nice keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CD3MRZD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_SvonDbMNHQR00

Football manager realistically is not too demanding to run, but you can get a pretty powerful machine in your price range that should perform well for years to come.

On the lower end, I'd suggest looking into the Acer VX15 for $800 if you want great value. It comes with a Quad Core i5 processor, 8gb of ram, 256gb SSD and a GTX 1050 dGPU. It would still easily be powerful enough for Football manager, and it's display is pretty solid. For a slightly more powerful option, look into the higher end version of the Acer VX15 for $900 which has a GTX 1050 Ti. The specs are otherwise identical with a Quad Core i5 processor, 8gb of ram, and a 256gb SSD. It also has a 6 hour advertised battery and a 1080p ips display.

And an even higher option with a much improved processor and GPU would be the Acer Helios 300 for $1050. It's a great price for a GTX 1060 and for the specs it has inside (Quad Core i7, 16gb of ram, 1TB HDD). It also has an IPS display, but it's a bit heavier at 5.95 lbs, and won't have nearly as good of battery as the acer VX15.

If you're looking for more suggestions or are interested in getting a better idea of options on the market, I suggest taking a look at my Laptop Suggestion Guide. Best of luck!

Looking for a reliable laptop that can handle lots of Chrome tabs. Not kidding, this is important! I oftentimes have 20+ tabs open!

Right now, I'm planning on getting the Acer Aspire 5 for $510 on Amazon, but with Black Friday, I thought I would check with the experts first in case I'm missing something awesome.

I'm coming from the Dell Inspiron 13 7368. I enjoyed it a lot, but after 3 years, it is failing a bit. Would also like this to last around 3 years if possible.

  • Total budget and country of purchase: $550, USA or Germany
  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is the most important to me by far. I prefer no touch screen but it isn't that important. Basically would like to
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important. I've been using ultrabooks for a few years now so I prefer them light and thin.
  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, no chromebooks please
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-16 inches
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lots of google chrome for netflix, amazon prime video, youtube, reddit etc is my main use. I'll play jackbox on occasion, too. Not too much gaming or anything intense.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An SSD is a must and would like 8GB+ RAM. Good battery life greatly appreciated. Backlit keyboards, fingerprint readers, and usb-c ports would be nice but not necessary.

Thank you all so much! (Also cross-posting to r/LaptopDeals)

I’m not Canadian, but I’ll try to help.

This PC is a great build with an awesome CPU and a decent GPU but lacks both an SSD and 16 gigs of RAM, both necessary for future-proofing. (The SSD is necessary now, but you can hold off with 8 gigs of ram) Sadly, I can’t find builds that are less than 1k CAD with anything similar or better than this with more RAM or an SSD.

I recommend getting a separate SSD like this. (You can always do the cheaper 250 gb variant for less money). I recommend this SSD because it is one of the fastest and comes with amazing Windows 10 cloning software. this guide is how I installed mine (just ignore the laptop specific parts like removing the battery. You can then order a SATA wire like this one to install your SSD. (If you don’t know where in the case you should put your SSD, just use 3M or double sided tape and tape it someone aesthetically pleasing on the bottom of the case.

The sata cables should be obvious where to install (on the right side of the motherboard, usually stacked on top of each other, slightly above or below the GPU), otherwise, you can look up your motherboard to find the SATA slots. Then just install the cloning software and follow the guide. When you need more RAM, look at the PCs ram slot and order another 8 gig stick (if there is only 1 stick of 8 gigs), otherwise, just order 16 gigs of any DDR4 ram you want. I’m sorry you need to do work to get a fully future proof machine, but remember this isn’t 100% needed, just highly recommended. (Plus you can save 100 bucks from your paycheck a few weeks from now for the SSD, you don’t need it the second u get ur pc. Good luck, let me know if you need any help!

P.S You don’t even need a big SSD, just something to hold Windows 10 and programs like Steam and Chrome. Big stuff like games can go on the HDD

In your budget, you can get a very decent machine to fit those criteria and do run the games you want to in 2017 as well as do a great job in streaming. This ROG Strix GL502VM would be an excellent pick for you not just for it's performance but also it's build quality . As it relates to performance, it has a wonderful quad core 6th gen intel processor, awesome 16 GB RAM, nice storage size which you can easily add an SSD to , AND of course, a terrific gtx 1060 6 GB graphics card which is one of the newest and most powerful graphics card you can get in a laptop today. This laptop has a very nice keyboard and a great display quality...It's overall build quality is very good and Asus as a brand does provide excellent customer service.
