I buy gift cards from Kroger because of the gas points :D

Also, if you haven't already, try the Kind brand bars for snacking. They have other great things too like cereal and other goodies.

You're going to think I'm crazy, but baby wash is so good to use for bathing. It's gentle on the skin. The shampoo is a good idea too. Also, it doesn't have to be bought from Pantry.

Mixing bowls in steel so you know you can get them hot in the sink or dishwasher and they'll be clean.

If you need food storage, get rid of the porous plastic and go with Pyrex, which is glass.

Again, I think stainless is the way to go. You can see if there's something on it, there's no extra lining (like non-stick that chips) and you can get it hot and completely sanitize it. I like this cooking set and you can add the cooking utensils too!

If I win, just surprise me :)

This stuff (minus the wash) puts you at about $130 so in between your ~$100-$150

What does your kitchen have? Stovetop (gas/electric coil/induction)? Oven? Microwave? Hot plate?

If you're willing to learn how to treat cookware properly, pick up a cast iron skillet. Imo they are the best value you can find. /r/castiron

Get some silicone kitchen utensils (something like this ). Doesn't melt as easily as plastic does

I'd recommend getting a single knife and cutting board. Plastic or wood board, and a 8-10" chef's knife. If you feel that that knife is too unwieldy, you can also pick up a smaller one.

Pick up a stock pot, I'd say probably 5-8qt

Bakeware is pretty cheap, imo you're best off getting a set ( e.g. ) /r/baking

Also look at possibly getting a slow cooker. While not necessary, I love mine. If you have the money to spend, get a programmable one. If not, pick up one at a yard sale or thrift store (just make sure the crock isn't cracked) /r/slowcooking

I'd say the essentials include a non-stick frying pan, a smaller pot (2-3 qts), a larger pot (5qts+), a cutting board, a chef's knife, measuring cups, measuring spoons, mixing bowls, a whisk, heat resistant silicone spatula, stirring spoons, serving spoon, ladle, aluminum baking sheet, tongs and can opener. With all of the above, I can cook ~ 90% of what I usually cook.

I, personally, don't care much for cast iron skillets. They require too much care and too much oil to keep up to snuff. I prefer a nice three-ply fry pan (This is what I own). A couple splurges on my part were a 2 qt saucier (was on sale for $50) which is great for making sauces of any sort because the whisk can fit in the rounded bottom of the pan. I also like the All-Clad 4Qt. Essential pan, with the tall sides and wide top. It's easy to make something a bit larger with this pan.

Finally, I bake all of my pizza on a cheap round pizza pan. It's not the fanciest, but it gets the job down well.

You need a deep pot not too full of oil, and something (usually a spider) to take things out (and sometimes gently lower them in). You'll also want hot pads and will find (metal) tongs occasionally useful.

For safety (in case of fire) you should have a cover for the pot, and a fire extinguisher handy.

For best results you'll need a deep fry thermometer that fits in the pot.

If at all possible, deep fry outside. Otherwise a mist of slowly hardening oil will cover your kitchen.

Be careful! If you put too much oil in the pot or put too much wet food in, the oil will boil over and might be ignited by the burner, making your life Very Exciting. Drop the lid on the pot

[Awesome bamboo utensil set] (http://www.amazon.com/Oceanstar-Bamboo-Cooking-Utensil-6-Piece/dp/B009BLGR2Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2Y21ZTYDMIPEN&coliid=I3FGWRJDA9JKB6)

These are probably the very first items I added to my wishlist. I LOVE wooden utensils. It might just be me, but they make my food taste better. :)

u/HopelessSemantic · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It's so hard to pick my favorite dessert, but I think I have to go with tiramisu, though I don't eat it often. That being said, though, I could honestly eat cheesecake all day everyday.

Item. Thanks for the contest!

I have silicone utensils which I love because they are rubbery and make removing sauces so much easier, and scraping the bottom of the pan while stirring is easier. Instead of one little edge, it bends to scrape a big area.

I own the cheaper BIFL items i listed and they have been AMAZING so far. you really cant beat the quality/ price ratio for the cheaper things i listed. if you want a better chef knife all the options i gave you would be excellent but just know that you could go crazy looking at all the different brands.

u/BridgetteBane · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

The problem with something that is pronged or bristled is that it's going to catch and keep all those bits, so you're taking the good stuff out of the pan... And it's going to be a royal pain to clean. Perhaps try something with a wider surface area but one solid piece like one of these/

  • Socks

  • some kind of chocolate bar with a purple wrapper (Do y'all have Dairy Milk over there? Or Freddos??)

  • a purple desk tidy

  • travel card holder

  • photo frame (you could put a photo of Prince in there, or the purple people eater)

  • a DVD of the Purple People Eater film

  • purple fruit candy

  • a scarf

  • AN ELECTRIC KETTLE (I'm a kettle evangelist, every home should have one)

  • This cool kitchen set

  • A handy backpack

  • A snazzy tie

u/KellerMB · 2 pointsr/Cooking

Ahh, nice. I hate the wood or metal + silicone combo utensils. Always feel like there's bacteria growing somewhere in the joints.

Just ordered this 6-piece set, was only $5 ($25 vs $20) more than the 3-piece spatula set you linked above.

u/omniscient_goldfish · 1 pointr/Cooking

i have this set and its good for the price https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J93TQYY -- for tableware, check craigslist as there are always an abundance of that there, though it might not be pretty.

u/FlippingCurmudgeon · 4 pointsr/Flipping

These are the dumbest gimmick ever, they aren't even ergonomically functional. And to the real point: your meat isn't pulling apart with just tongs, you fail as a cook IMHO. Or just use a couple of normal forks if you need an extremely fine shred.

They are pretty much toys you buy once to surprise scare your girlfriend/wife or kids with. Meat "claws" with long normal utensil like handles, maybe if you absolutely need them...
