I teach mod/severe self-contained special ed and it is one of the main things we work on. I've created my own curriculum that works out pretty well. I have used Handwriting Without Tears (HWT). I just don't like how strict HWT is. I kind of let the kids guide me with what they need when it comes to writing.



Here's the thing about writing. If you do not have good control over the pencil, you cannot write well. You need to have proper grip on a pencil in order to manipulate a pencil. It just kind of works that way.



I get really pissed when people teach circles and lines. Its the wrong way to write and leads to a lot of problems. I go with the magic C, diagonal lines, straight lines, and some curves.



I have to start with basic basic basic with some of my kids. I start with wiki sticks place 1/8th inch apart and have them use egg crayons or triangle crayons to trace between them. Then they graduate to highlighted lines over dashed lines. Then dashed lines. Then I will do targets. I will put a dot on one side of the paper and a dot on the other side and they have to connect. I then take large 3 line paper and color each line a different color. I'll give them directions based on the color. (Bring the L up so it touches the green. The a needs to touch the pink line.) Then I'll just move to center line. And we go from there. I have a letter space for between the letters and to keep the letters together I tell them they have to hug.

Believe it or not, they already exist.

Sadly, they don't color nearly as well.

My kid had these, they are fun but awful to step on...

Twistable Crayons were a God send with my youngest. She would snap crayons, pencils, colored pencils, and ruin any and all markers.
