Warning - lots of text below! My baby is about 6 weeks now and I'm exclusively breastfeeding. My Medela Harmony manual pump has been fine for building a stash - I pump 1-2 times a day for the freezer and occasional bottle feedings from Dad. I think it's pretty convenient, but I'll be using a double electric pump when I go back to work (waiting to see what Tricare will cover in 2015!).

Whatever you decide to use for diapering, I'd strongly recommend getting some prefolds (I got Osocozy unbleached). They're great for burp cloths, catching milk from your other boob during letdown, etc and they're also way cheaper and more absorbent than fancy burp cloths. Personally I love prefolds and covers for diapering, but don't buy too much into any one system or brand until you know what works for you. My husband hates prefolds so now I'm having to add pockets and AIOs to appease him.

I'd get some swaddlers (at least 2; my favorite is from Nuroo but that was a gift and they're pricey, the summer infant SwaddleMe wraps are good now that she's bigger but didn't fit well until about 10 lbs). My girl lives in footed pajamas and I love the Gerber zipped ones, we found tons at goodwill for $1.50 each but if you can't find them used, they're on Amazon for $10 for a 2 pack. You're right that other people will buy clothes, but they'll pick cutesy stuff and you need some practical choices too.

Nursing pillow - I had an unexpected C section and this has been so necessary. I love the Luna Lullaby since it's big and I had a big baby.

Some kind of baby carrier, I got a Moby wrap while she's small and it's amazing for running errands (I put it on before getting in the car and pop her in before going in the store, WAY easier than a carseat and stroller).

We were gifted a used swing and it is a freaking godsend. It's the only way I get chores done since I can pop her in there and cook, do laundry, clean, etc without her crying. YMMV, some babies hate them, but buy used and you won't be out too much cash.

Wubbanub pacifier is easy to keep track of and super cute.

Pack n Play with a mattress for cosleeping (recommended to reduce SIDS risk for the first 6 months). At least 2 mini crib sheets.

Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter is amazing for the first couple weeks.

QuickZip crib sheets will be amazing once you use the crib.

Simba baby safety nail cutter - no bleeding!

Finally, the Itzbeen pocket nanny timer is so helpful for keeping track of feedings and diaper changes, especially in the first few weeks.

Hope this wasn't too overwhelming. Good luck!

True cool story bro story time:

So I bought the Borderlands during the summer steam sale this year, and proceeded to be completely blown away by it. This one particular night, I think it was sometime in July, I played it for like 10 hours straight, and then went to sleep, where I proceeded to have the worst nightmare ever.

I had this dream where I was in the starcraft 2 map "metalopolis" (seen here and here) specifically, I was in the top left corner where that platform is with two ramps. Suddenly, a four or five of these psycho bandit guys, that look just like the one the OP pop out of nowhere and start chasing me yelling "STRIP THE FLESH, SALT THE WOUND." Except....there were a few differences in how they looked. They were wearing a full body blue spandex suit that covered everything up to the neck, then on their heads they were wearing these banana hats (kinda looks like the one in this picture but much larger) So as they're chasing me around, I start trying to convince them to not eat me, I remember saying things like "I don't have a lot of meat on me, go get someone else," and "I'm really skinny, why do you want me?" I should mention that I'm saying these things in a completely calm and collected manner, like how I would talk to a teacher, and not screaming these things even though I'm about to be eaten. So they eventually catch me and throw me to the ground, and then this strange thing happened(as if this dream already wasn't strange enough already). The best way I can describe what happened was I "zoomed out" from my first person perspective and was now observing myself like how you observe a character in a 3rd person game. As the bandits had be pinned face down to the ground, one of them bent me backward with my legs and thighs still on the ground kinda like this position,, but my thighs were still touching the ground, so my back was at 90 degrees. One of the Bandits then screamed in my ear in a heavy metal screamo voice "What would you do for an orgasm!!???!!". Then one of the psycho bandits hit the part where my spine connected to my pelvis with their axe, and my top half of my body goes flying off, kinda like someone hitting a a ball on a Tball stand. My top half itself remained in tact, however. I could see all of the details of my top half; the bottom part of the spine, the lower portion of my ribs. I should mention at this point that I should mention at this point that I had taken an physical anthropology class two quarters ago. As my top half landed on the ground, one of the bandits grabbed my head and twisted it until it popped off like a bottle cap on a beer. I could then see my head flying off with the top portion of my spine still connected to it. For those who don't know, the very top parts of your spine that are connected to your skull are the atlas and axis I swear to any deity or god or dead relative that this story is true, and the next part is true, I remember my thought processes next were very specifically this:

"hey that's the atlas axis, oh and the atlas is on top of the axis, a good way to remember is that they're in alphabetical order.

"wait a minute, that's my atlas axis"

"HEY WAIT A MINUTE, IF I CAN SEE MY OWN ATLAS AXIS, THAT'S NOT GOOD"

At this point, I should mention that this whole time as a third person observer, I had no conscious control over what I was observing, like I was watching a cinematic. After my head was popped of, I could now view things as I wished. I kept looking back and forth between my torso and my head, trying to comprehend what had just happened. I could see the inside of my torso, and even began identifying the parts that I had learned in my anthropology class. I should also mention that right as my head was popped off, a loop of this one part of this song that goes "maybe I should kill myself" kept playing over and over again in my head. So I'm looking at the parts of my mutilated body, with this fraction of a song on loop, and then this black rectangle that kind of looked like this -> ____ begins to cover my vision. It started out very skinny on top of my vision, and then slowly extended downward to cover up my entire vision. At this point I wake up, and immediately sit up, kind of like how people wake up from nightmares in movies, and thought I had wet the bed. I had sweat so much that I had completely drenched my sheets, my blankets and pillow. It took two runs in the wash to get the smell out. That morning was the only morning in my entire life that I took a cold shower. Ever since then, I have never played Borderlands again, not because it's a bad game, but because of this dream I guess I'm afraid of a similar nightmare reoccurring.

TL;DR Had a nightmare where these psycho bandits like the one in OP wearing blue spandex jumpsuits and banana hats chased me hacked me to bits on a Starcraft 2 map, then a bunch of other weird shit happened .

first of it's amazing that you're willing to do a foster to adopt. A couple of people in my family have fostered and it's great. Most people are only willing to adopt and if they consider foster will only foster an infant.

Okay, I saw that you and your husband are a nerdy couple (like us) and I saw this article a while back and thought of it instantly when I saw your post. My favorites are the lost nursery, the doctor who, and the superman (which I'd use as inspiration for a batman) ones.

If you end up going with the lion king nursery you can start with either Mellow Yellow by Behr or Zinnia Gold. I think they're really lion king colors and they're not to bright for a nursery. It's also better than using those sticky decals which look cheap and are horrible quality.

These are amazingggggg, especially at night. I had this one which may go with your theme a little bit but it was absolutely amazing. It comes with a remote for it that you can turn it on from the doorway or outside the room so if the baby is about to fall asleep you don't have to walk in and wind up a traditional mobile to get it going again. Babies R Us also offers this one which is a traditional lion king mobile.

A lion king bedding set would go nicely with some lion king sheets. I like the sheets because they don't just come in lion king character prints. They come with other safari type prints as well. If you don't want to go with the big bedding set and just the sheets you could get this blanket for the crib. A diaper stacker works well especially if you're limited on space. This lamp is a little on the expensive side but is absolutely adorable. These are a nice alternative instead of using the wall stickers. This little snuggler is so cute.

Honestly you and your husband can do the wall art similar to the buzzfeed article I sent you (the superman nursery theme). Just go to a craft store and get a couple of canvases and you guys can paint a couple lion king pictures to add some pop to the walls.

good luck and hakuna matata.

Sally sells she shells down by the she shore :)

Here's a bed with under the bed storage build in! This one is more of a "toddler bed." It's not a very creative bed but nice and you can snazz it up with sheets! Or if you find another bed with space underneath these have always worked well for me.

Here are some cute sheets with sharks on them! :D Super cute. Or this one with cute animals on it! :D

Thanks for the contest! :D I hope you find something.

everybody always says towels but honestly i hate using towels. they don't really prevent the mattress from getting wet and they get heavy when soaked. when i first started squirting i used a waterproof crib mattress pad. that one is pricey, imho. i just paid like, 5 bucks for two at walmart. they worked really well for solo times but very poorly for partner times. i will say...uh...i outgrew the crib pads so to speak. they eventually couldn't handle my volume or um...spray pattern even during solo times. for partner times, these fascinator throws work AMAZINGLY well. i put mine down, go to town and when we're done i just move it off the bed and spend afterglow on a dry bed. the throw works really well solo times as well. they are pricey, which is why i sewed my own. i think if you can't d.i.y. one the price will be worth the peace of mind, honestly. and lastly, i will say that if you do not have a waterproof mattress cover, get one ASAP. do not pass go, do not collect $200. get thee a mattress cover. it protects the mattress from any spontaneous solo action or partner action or when the crib pad or throw is dirty and also from...overspray. as far as partner opinions, i recently had a partner who was shocked and turned off by the fact that i squirt and am multi-orgasmic. i gave him a heads up about both before we got down to brass tacks, but i don't think he was prepared for the truth of my words. that's fine--he gets to have his opinion and i'm glad we found out early on. other guys i've been with feel like they've found the holy grail. one man's holy grail is another man's "ewww". just be you.

u/DarlingDestruction · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

I was/am in the exact same boat - first kid, limited funds, starting from scratch, going through reviews and prices drove me insane. It took me probably three months to get my registry together, and, even then, I am still switching things up, lol.

lucieslist.com was invaluable while picking everything out. I highly recommend you check it out.

What we have bought ourselves that fit our tight budget:

Graco Comfy Cruiser Travel System. We had already decided to go with that car seat, given that it seems to be the top-rated budget option, and the stroller ended up being a much-needed bonus. We go on walks a lot, so it works for us. If you don't need the stroller, the seat itself is, I think, only ~$100.

The Pack N Play, which I've heard from literally everyone and their mother is almost a necessity.

Because we don't have an IKEA near us to get our hands on a swanky $99 crib, we bought this DaVinci crib. We still only ended up paying $100 for it, as we found it on sale, however, we would have paid the $200 for it, given that the reviews are good, and, when compared to some other cribs that cost $400 and up, the price isn't bad at all.

As for the rest of the registry, we have on there a Moby wrap (affordable baby wearing, yay!), nail clippers, outlet plugs, nursing pads, a wipes case, a baby tub, baby wash, assorted crib sheets, waterproof crib sheets, Pack N Play mattress, and sheets to go with, crib mattress (we actually bought this one when we found it on sale for $20, and it's just fine), receiving blankets, dirty diaper bags (because we aren't getting a diaper pail, just a small can with a seal-able lid), changing pad, and a cover to go with, pacifiers, Dr. Brown's Gia Nursing Pillow, a bottle brush, bottle warmer, thermometer, booger sucker, camera to monitor the baby, and a few other assorted things that I couldn't really find a definitive "best in class" for, so pick at your own discretion: diaper bag, swaddles (although I've read good things about the Summer Infant brand), bottles (we're going with Phillips Avent), a bouncer (we got this one), and a swing.

I agonized over this stuff for what felt like forever, lol, so I hope it helps you and saves you some hair-pulling. It's all so overwhelming!

u/abogadachica · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

This approach helped with a problem cat we have; she has a tendency to pee on beds and couches and poops in the bathtub (at least the pooping is always there, in a tidy place to clean up). I think it helped her a lot to get to spend time outside. We also use those Feliway pheromone plug-ins; that might help. Also - if the peeing gets out of hand, if there is a "target" area that happens over and over, we found a pretty good solution. Scat Mats (kind of expensive) are static electricity mats you can put down to prevent the cat getting up there - or, a cheaper option is plastic runners. You know how office chairs on carpet have a plastic layer under them, with spikes on the bottom? You can get that at Home Depot or Lowe's, and then put it spike-side up on "problem areas." We cover our bed with 3 strips of this every day. Not fun, but waaaay better than having to wash bedsheets on the reg. Finally -- for the crib, think about this: http://www.amazon.com/Nsstar-Mosquito-Toddler-Netting-Available/dp/B00IZZN7VG/ref=sr_1_3?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1408201302&sr=1-3&keywords=crib+mosquito+net+for+baby

Good luck! I understand the dilemma you are in, and thank you for being patient and loving to kitty. I sometimes think that our "problem child" cat came into my life to teach me patience, problem-solving skills, and to take things one day at a time and not let a little poop or pee derail my life...lessons that will come in handy as a mom. Hugs!

u/Ariantia · 1 pointr/sugargliders

Not sure where you're based but it's one of these types: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mosquito-Canopy-Foldable-Camping-Outdoor/dp/B06XY65CR5/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=pop+up+mosquito+net&qid=1562971770&s=gateway&sprefix=pop+up+mosquito&sr=8-3

You should be able to find the same style by searching "pop up mosquito net" if it's not in your area 🙂, I think I got my first one on ebay and my second on Amazon (my dog chewed my first one when I was out one day lol). They have them in different sizes so you can pick what works best for your space, I've got a double size. Definitely recommend putting a sheet or something on the bottom when you're in it to catch any mess as it makes cleaning up afterwards much easier!

u/Bmorehon · 2 pointsr/breakingmom

I had to do cold turkey on the swaddle because I refuse to buy any more contraptions. It was rough, and almost broke me. We got down to waking up every hour, on the hour and I just about lost my mind. I was never against cry it out or any sleep training, but my boy was not old enough yet to do it so I didn't think anything of it. But in the last 2 weeks I was so stressed an tired that I was taking it out on my husband, starting fights and shit. So I decided that mommy needs some sleep and we are gonna make it happen. Monday night was night 1 of cry it out. Kiddo was asleep in 18 minutes (went in to soothe him 3 times in 5 min intervals, only stayed 1 minute and never picked him up). He had a few wake-ups but did much better than usual. Night 2 it took 22 minutes to get to sleep, but then he slept through the night. I repeat, he slept through the night. I did a dream feed at 3am because I was engorged, but he slept through that too.

I feel like a fucking badass because it worked and for the first time in like 6 months, I feel like a normal person at work. Sleep training and CIO doesn't work for everyone, but it has worked wonders so far for us. And baby was much happier and more smiley this morning which is a help.

I also started putting him down on a fleece blanket in his crib, which I have tucked really well under his mattress. I know that isn't super safe, but I did it for a while just during the day and he never managed to get it loose so I think it's ok for night time too (esp since I was in his room once an hour anyway). Now that I won't have to check on him every 60 minutes, I've bought some of these which might also help you.

I have similar worries! We have three cats and a husky, who are all our babies and have free roam of the house. I feel bad knowing they won’t get the same attention that they are used to when baby arrives, but I’m more concerned about the cats trying to curl up with the baby when it’s sleeping. I also plan to keep the nursery door closed, but I’m more concerned about when the baby is in the bassinet in our room (if we try to lock the cats out, they will claw the shit out of our carpet and ruin it trying to get in while also keeping us awake with the noise.. been there, done that).

I put this net on our registry that I plan to use over the bassinet in our room and over the pack n play when in our living room. It’s cheap and has good reviews. There are many others like it! There are even “crib tents” you can get too.

u/ernieball · 10 pointsr/BabyBumps

The only sheet approved for use in the pack n play is one like this. It's made specifically for the thin pack n play mattress board. Regular crib sheets or waterproof pads are made to fit over much thicker crib mattresses so using them in the PnP will yield way too much slack.

I think I'm reading you right here - like there's excess fabric that's bunching up in the middle?

If you're using something like this on the thin board that comes with a PnP it's incorrect. This sheet is meant to be used with a thicker PnP mattress, which is an add on some people use once baby is older (like toddler age).

A newborn/infant should only sleep on the thin board that comes with the PnP and/or the thin pack n play sheet in the first link.

I have one by a small company called I'm a little teapot. I got it on Amazon. The only "padding" is a small amount of wool for natural fire protection and they use the best and safest waterproofing. It doesn't make noise and is good for allergens.

It's totally safe and has the benefit of being natural with no offgassing. It isn't fluffy or thick and doesn't add any volume IMHO. I was worried about that too.

Tarps can be pretty cheap if you stay away from cuban. It's not hard to find a nice 8x10 tarp from a decent retailer for around $100, or just a normal blue tarp from a hardware store for $15 to try out on an over-nighter to see if you like the concept of tarping. Add a polycro window insulation ground cloth for $5 at a hardware store. Toss in a few stakes and some guy lines for maybe $20 total and you have everything but bug protection for either $50ish or $125ish. For the bugs, the S2S Nano Bug Pyramid is pretty cheap at $50 and has a good reputation, or you could just get some cheap bug netting and cut it and make it work with your tarp for under $10.

Most of the items in this room we already owned. The crib was a hand me down from a close friend, and we found the dresser on Facebook marketplace. Overall I think we only spent about $150. I dreamed of making this nursery before we found out baby Jetson was a boy, so I was thrilled to be able to make it happen.

Unfortunately I have no idea the name of the crib, and the changing table was second hand.
1.) Big cubes from walmart (very stylish and nice for $5!)
2.) Diaper Genie! No more stank!
3.) Himalayan Salt Lamp! Bright enough to see everything clearly, but calming and soft enough for sleep!

I bought these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00373X6SA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1372862907&sr=8-1&pi=SL75

My son loves to smash his head against the slats when he sleeps, so I needed something to protect his head. These vertical slat protectors are a godsend. They leave maybe 2-3 inches of room, so he never gets any limbs stuck.

My BFF had an issue with cats sleeping in her daughter's crib. This solved it and will totally thwart your escape artist.

I'd really recommend getting a couple if not a pad for it as well. You can probably find one cheaper but I'm talking about something like this that goes under the sheet.

With our first pack n play the "mattress" part was stained and ruined from getting spit up on. You can only spot clean them which is why we ended up getting the sheets and protector

In case you have any interest in keeping your child in their crib for a bit longer- my friend is having her son sleep in a crib tent and it has worked wonders for her!

u/SabrinaFaire · 2 pointsr/Pets

Might be easier to get something like this.

We're also in a one bedroom studio. Life these days is expensive! It can be hard to move! We're using a Pack N Play instead of a crib and when we need it dark, I think we're going to get this . You can also get a small dresser with a changing table on top. We're also getting a folding high chair so we can store it when we're not using it. You got this! You're not alone!

We use a pack n play with this SnoozeShade + white noise

I worry about that balancing act, too (we also have two cats). I have already decided I'm getting one of those safety tent things for the crib because I know my cats will be all up in it, and as cute as those internet videos are of cats sleeping with babies, I'm just not OK with it if I'm not supervising.

I worked in childcare for many years (still do as as side gig) and know that when the dog starts barking, baby starts crying, cats start meowing, and 8 million other things go wrong, my patience will wear thin. If I need a minute, the baby won't die from being laid down and crying for an extra 60 seconds, and my pets will survive that minute too.

I think kids who grow up loving animals have a very strong sense of compassion, empathy, and even responsibility. It's all worth it!

I'm talking about these.

How about if you got something like this or this to keep the cats out?

u/Bunnyboops · 4 pointsr/beyondthebump

So I have this pop up mesh tent for babies who crawl out of cribs and that's what I used. It's perfect because its breathable, keeps mosquitoes, insects, and kitties out! Idk if I can link it but I'll try https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Crib-Safety-Pop-Tent/dp/B075DLL489/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=MESH%2BCRIB%2BTENT&qid=1550950460&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&th=1

Wonder bumpers! Expensive, but they solve the problem, are "in use" 15 hours a day (eventually), and they are safe. My kiddo tried to use the mesh one as a step to get out, then I switched to these. They are still on her crib (and she is still in it) at age 3.

FYI, They do make crib covers for this purpose: Like this

u/kariertkartoffel · 1 pointr/Parenting

I know some people have used a crib canopy (something like this) to keep the kid contained in the crib for longer

u/brainpicnic · 1 pointr/sleeptrain

You can always use Snoozeshade for a pack n play to darken the sleeping area and do crib hour.

Seriously. Best. Investment. Ever.

Let me preface by they do nap in toddler beds at my moms 3-4x a week, so I know they are capable of staying on their cribs when we turn them into toddler beds. However, my husband and I have demanding work and travel schedules plus a 4 year old that wanders into our bed by midnight each night. The idea of all 5 of us fighting for space and sleep in our bed every night is scary, we do intend on taking down the tents and transitioning into toddler beds by the time they’re 3 (Aug) or potty trained... which ever comes first....

What about a crib tent?? They’re not the cutest but it will keep the baby in! 20 mo seems young to me for a toddler bed but I know others have done it. crib tent

u/abishop711 · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

There a crib tents you can get to make sure the cat stays out! here's one on Amazon, but I'm sure there are others around.

We're a little worried that our extra-cuddly kitty who is not afraid of the vacuum, the fire alarm, or other loud noises, might try to cuddle the baby before he/she is big enough to move if they are getting smothered, so will be getting a tent to be on the safe side.

I agree with others about giving it back and trying again later, but I also wanted to address the crib thing. You have some options here:

A) a sleep sack may prevent her from getting her leg up on the railing. If she takes it off, put it on backwards.

B) look for a thinner crib matress, OR, if your crib has slats that go to the ground, you can put the mattress on the ground. Basically try to extend the height of the sides.

C) if those both fail, get this thing:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075DLL489/

D) if all else fails, baby proof the room and lock the door.
