For something a little different, there are a ton of very good notetaking apps on Ubuntu that (I think) are substantially better than what's available on Android. Xournal, BasKet, and Zim are a few that I've really come to like.

I took most of my class notes this past semester using Xournal on my TF300 (running xubuntu) with a cheap Wacom tablet, which worked surprisingly well for taking handwritten notes.

For typed notes, BasKet is great and lets you insert quite a few different file types in addition to normal text (images, screenshots, etc). Zim is similar, but uses wiki syntax. I actually came to prefer it for the awesome plugins that let you insert various things (GraphViz diagrams, calculators, even sheet music).

Android apps like Evernote and Keep are pretty good, but I've always been pretty disappointed in the lack of formatting options and how inefficient they are. They all really felt like they were getting in my way and I'd always end up going back to using pen + paper until I found Xournal.

As for good pens, I never found one that worked, at least using the device's touchscreen. Even with a stylus (most of which are terrible for handwriting things) you'll never come close to beating pen + paper. I've heard hard-tipped active styluses are better but I think you'll still run into issues with the digitizer not having high enough resolution for decent-looking handwritten text. Even then, you'll have problems dragging your palm across the screen.

Eventually I just gave up, got a lightly used Wacom Bamboo tablet, and convinced my tf300 to work with it. I've been using it happily ever since.

Best Buy/Amazon/Staples/Walmart has the 7th gen iPad on sale - $250 for 32GB or $329 for 128GB.

I'd spend the extra money for the 128GB, unless you have a strict budget or do everything in the cloud. Also, unless you can find the 6th gen for cheaper, I'd go for the 7th gen because it has an extra 1GB of RAM vs the previous gen. That's useful for having more apps open without reloading.

FYI - If you plan to use Microsoft Office apps for iPad, they're only free for iPads below 10.1". The 6th gen is 9.7", so it qualifies for free Office apps. The new 7th gen iPad is 10.2", so you have to pay for those apps. The free versions only let you read documents, not edit them.

If you're going to college though, you should qualify for free Office 365 with your EDU email, so that's probably not a big deal for you.

It looks like Amazon currently has the Apple Pencil 1 on sale for $79.

If you want to get the best deals and are not in a rush, you should check out the Slickdeals forum for deals on things. Also, Best Buy sometimes has Open Box deals on products that can be worth the savings.

Hey OP, I'm probably late to the game, but figured I'd share some of my experiences. You can draw on a computer using a mouse - in fact I have known a few graphic artists who swore by the mouse, but they are few and far between. By far the preferred method is by way of graphic tablet.

Wacom is still the reigning king in the tablet world - their Intuos line is what you will usually see in most professional offices. They are a pretty serious investment though, usually starting around $300-400+. When you're getting started, look for a used Intuos or pick up something from their much more affordable Bamboo line.

The biggest hurdle when drawing on computer is disconnecting what your hand is doing and what your eye is seeing. Most traditional artists are used to drawing directly on their media - unless you have a Cintiq or monitor graphic tablet, that will not be the case in your situation.

The next step is learning your software. Like others have mentioned, GIMP is a great starting point because it's free - however if you are thinking about making a living out of graphic design/artistry in an office setting, you will eventually have to learn the Adobe suite. While many people use Photoshop to draw from scratch, their official product for this purpose is Adobe Illustrator. Once you get used to what Illustrator offers, you will see why people separate the two products (vector art is just the start). Ideally though, you will want to learn both Illustrator and Photoshop.

u/vvithout · 6 pointsr/conceptart

There is a difference between a tablet (like an iPad or Surface, etc) and a drawing tablet. Cintiqs are really the pro level hardware from the company Wacom. I'd look into Wacom's other options. Bamboos are the cheapest and many people love them for hobby level work, and a step above them in both price and quality are the Intuos products. I've had my large Intuos4 for years, it has held up really well and was a great investment, I absolutely love it.

Edit: And here's two good posts about graphics tablets :].

The New Buyers' Guide To Graphics Tablets

How to choose the best Wacom pen tablet for your needs

u/saggybolsack · 9 pointsr/networking
  • SecureCRT, the chat window feature that allows you to paste and run commands to all sessions is awesome.

  • The Rhino 5200, it rocks. It has a bunch of useful functions like printing labels that wrap around cables and I don't have to beg anyone for their crappy label printer.

  • Crossover Linux to manage the windows applications I need to run on Linux (checkpoint smartconsole and ikeview, visio, ...)

  • I need to get a digital toner and tracer to better deal with undocumented patch panels, the fluke intellitone must be nice but is a bit expensive for something I need only once in a while.

  • I'd like to get the panduit cable comb to make /r/cableporn worthy bundles but it is expensive for a piece of molded plastic .

  • And I need an Air Console, because screw sitting on the floor in the cold aisle of a coloc center.

  • Now that I'm writing a wishlist, I also need one of these to avoid manually switching console port from one device to another, a usb quad serial ports adapter.

    Edit :

  • Wolf Wifi Pro, an android wireless survey app, it's basic but a fraction of the cost of more professional tools and still allows me to make signal strength and snr heatmaps over a floor plan. It's good enough for my needs, in fact it's awesome.

  • Wacom Bamboo Graphic Tablet to draw crude diagrams or dicks or dick shaped OSPF areas I can paste in an email.

  • BIC 4 color pens because they blow my mind and are really useful for hand drawn diagrams.

I have used wacom products for a while and I love them. I used a wacom bamboo for a LONG time and it worked well enought (though small) for a long time.
http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Splash-Tablet-CTL471/dp/B0089VGPII

Right now I use a wacom cintiq 13HD and I love it. It works almost flawlessly for me and I can't imagine switching back to something else.
http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Cintiq-Interactive-Display-DTK1300/dp/B00BSOSCNE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1451245108&sr=1-1&keywords=wacom+cintiq+13hd

I used some wacom knock offs too. They work rather well and the prices are really competitive like the one for the yiynovia brands.
http://www.amazon.com/Yiynova-MSP19U-Monitor-Windows-Solution/dp/B009QQ7BG0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1451245197&sr=1-1&keywords=yiynova+tablet

I had an older version of the above tablet for a while and it lasted about 6 months before it just stopped working for me. It kind of turned me off to those knock off brands but other people have had great things to say about them so I don't know for sure. Good luck in your search.

u/HiImGarrett · 1 pointr/drawing

This one here is at the top of your price range but it is very good. I have one myself and love it. You can also get a factory refurbished one here for about half the cost and buy her something else. I hope she likes whatever you get her!

u/gaso · 2 pointsr/YouShouldKnow

Compressed meaning audio that has been compressed, like all audio on a phone would be. Unless you were using an application that was specifically capturing and recording audio that was not compressed. Packet meaning data waiting to be sent back to where ever the next time a network connection is established. Please don't be condescending to me, it makes me want to tell you to go fuck yourself.

Energy to keep the phone on? Not what I said, but regardless: I have a droid eris I use as an MP3 player. The battery is currently around 15%. The uptime is 529 hours, it's been 17 days 19 hours 36 minutes 33 seconds since unplugged from the charger, and has 4 hours and 43 minutes of awake time.

Yes, encoding uses a little power. Luckily cell phone components are designed to be very energy efficient when it comes to processing, huh?

Store it...I'd imaging (EDIT:: NO: I'd imagine, or I'm imagining...not "I'd imaging"...what the fuck!) a couple MB of space within a dedicated section of a component that has had a backdoor built into it, but phones do come with a couple GB of storage these days. What's an hour of audio recording? This pen can record up to 800 HOURS of audio into 4GB of storage: http://www.amazon.com/Livescribe-4-GB-Echo-Smartpen/dp/B003RAE19Q I'd imagine the data would get uploaded way before you would get to 800 hours of stored speech...just my guess.

The usage would need to exceed your typical self-discharge rates to be noticeable. Who knows how optimised such usage could be if you put some engineering into it? I'm just guessing, but I'd hazard that it would be noticeable if you could reliably measure the battery independent of the device.

tl;dr: You can't see me, so I'll tell you that I'm really trying hard not to roll my eyes at you.

u/killerhoboXx · 2 pointsr/MLPdrawingschool

Well, if you're on a budget I'd recommend the Wacom Bamboo pen Tablet. It's cheap, I got mine for £45 which is quite good in comparison to other tablets.

It is light, Wired, accurate and cool looking

The issues are that there is not a lot of customisation in the settings and that the active area is rather small. But other than that it is a great purchase.

I hope this helped you reach a decision.

EDIT: There is a disk that comes with it to install drivers, meaning that you can't just plug and play the first time on any PC Although the disk needs to only be used once on each PC.

EDIT 2: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-Bamboo-PEN-EDITION-2011/dp/B005OPKVNM/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1333036447&sr=8-13

Overall I think your art is very good. You have an excellent grasp of anatomy and facial expression. Your biggest flaw is just cleanliness. I'm not certain of whether or not you own a digital stylus, but it will really help. Here [1,2] are two different ones you may want to look at depending on what you're able to get a hold of. I understand that this could be difficult at your age.

Beyond this, practicing your lineart is all that's left. Here is a good guide to help you figure out where to start. Also, try to take the time to make your coloring complete and neat. Other than that, I can't think of any other advice, since you're starting from such solid ground.

u/j4nds4 · 3 pointsr/Surface

That's a weirdly worded question. "What are the advantages of this device, if we pretend these two advantages don't exist?"

I'm not even saying that the Pen is indisputably better than the Pencil, because I truthfully think they better suit separate needs; the Pencil seems better at actual drawing/painting but little else, and the Pen is better for overall productivity and note-taking but lacks some of the painting precision that the Pencil has.

But here are some of the Pen's advantages.

  • Battery. You don't have to worry about recharging it and dealing with the absurd charging method Apple has employed. When your Pen runs out of battery in a year or so, you just replace the AAAA battery and get on with your day. And you don't have to deal with the cap going missing, which many people have complained about with the Pencil.

  • Replaceable tips. Different artists like a different feel to their drawing utensil, and the Surface can offer that.

  • Magnetic connection. The Pencil may conveniently roll onto a side that displays its logo prominently, but it doesn't have a convenient storage option like the Pen does. It's a little detail, but something that's goes a long way after hundreds of times that you pull it out of the bag with the Pen ready and waiting as opposed to having to reach for the Pencil separately.

  • OneNote/Cortana integration. You said to ignore the eraser, which we will, but said nothing about the button on the eraser, which enables near-instantaneous access to note-taking features and voice-search. The former is especially helpful in a school/work environment - get to writing what you need immediately without having to hunt for the appropriate app - much like the Camera shortcut on the iPhone.

  • Better usability outside of sketching. Watch this video of a guy sketching a shoe with an iPad Pro and count how many times he tries to tap a button or drag an item on the screen with the Pencil and resorts to using his finger instead (also note how many times he tries to erase with it...). Simple selections are annoyingly difficult to accomplish and slow down your productivity when you're just trying to quickly change your brush stroke. I haven't seen any video of the Pen in use that demonstrates a similar frustration.

These are just the ones I can think of at the moment. Again, if we ignore the eraser and the side button. Frankly, I expect that Apple will add some of these features to the Pencil in a generation or two, just as Microsoft will add tilt recognition and better precision to the Pen.
u/Etorphine · 1 pointr/Illustration

That's great! Please show us when you have it all done. :)

If you eventually decide to dabble in more digital art, I'd recommend getting a Wacom Bamboo tablet. It's pretty inexpensive (as far as tablets go, anyway), and that way you can experiment in Photoshop more. :) What I usually do is scan a drawing in, do the lineart in PS, and then color from there.

u/ut17 · 2 pointsr/EngineeringStudents

Livescribe pens are good. They combine notes with recordings of the professor. Basically, you can later go back and click on something in your notes, and it will play back what the professor was saying at that point. It's great for example problems.

I would look into getting one of those. They're great.
http://www.amazon.com/Livescribe-Smartpen-Android-Tablets-Smartphones/dp/B00FG38L16/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450889609&sr=8-1&keywords=livescribe

That one is ~$150, but there are a couple of slightly cheaper models. Either way, they're great.
The only thing is to make sure your professor is okay with being recorded--some are not.

u/carnot_thank_you · 5 pointsr/EngineeringStudents

I use GoodNotes5 to take and organize notes! You can look up Youtube videos of walk-through tutorials of the app. It's really easy to export them and save them to Google Drive. There's also a laptop app coming out I'm pretty sure - I have the beta version for my Macbook. I have a lot of examples in my post history for the notes I take on my iPad.

Edit: If two screens is really a big point for you, I can't see how any other tablet will have the $350 iPad set-up beat. In terms of note taking, the iPad is amazing. It's just not a good stand-alone device for engineers! Links to the set-up I'm talking about - iPad and Apple Pencil.

u/miguelfp1 · 3 pointsr/Surface

both the Wacom Bamboo Feel and this Fujitsu are popular options.

The Wacom Bamboo lacks an eraser on top, the Fujitsu has both an eraser and two side buttons.

Also, here is a pretty good thread with other compatible options. hope it helps!

u/joyproject · 2 pointsr/redditgetsdrawn

Thank you. Haha, I've been looking into do that soon (Making tutorials and classes of some sort)

I bought my daughter [this tablet] (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Splash-Tablet-CTL471/dp/B0089VGPII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370074959&sr=8-1&keywords=wacom+bamboo). SHe loves it, but she's 6. I am not sure her review of how awesome it is counts. Other friends have it though and say it gets the job done but if you want to be more serious go with Intous.

u/Endblock · 3 pointsr/actuallesbians

If you really want to keep drawing, I would recommend using your phone until your setup is working again. I've been doing it for a bit and it's the next best thing. I bought an ~$10 stylus from amazon ( [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N2OJX82/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to be precise) and use picsart's draw mode. It works pretty well and it's portable

u/Borcuse · 1 pointr/FFBraveExvius

Apple Pencil

tho it is pretty friggin expensive

If you really want to get serious into sketching? I advise to start drawing from life

but if you just want to do it just for fun, the funnest(funniest?) way i found was just to try copying art works from artist that I admire and when I get how they do their styles I try to do it without copying and incorporate it into a new artwork

u/CheeseManFuu · 1 pointr/osugame

as a person who's used them for a couple years now, i only have to replace them every few months if even

as long as youre not using it like a box cutter it should last a pretty decent time and a pack of 5 nibs is like $7, and the surface is pretty smooth against plastic nibs and gets a fair amount of friction after you wear down the nib a bit, a cover isn't necessary for good drag

the pen (LP-181?) is pretty nice and light, but for some reason the pcb in mine got loose and i bought the pen for the 470 (LP-171) and it works just about as well, even if its slightly heavier and longer

buying used isn't usually a problem, and you can only buy it used anymore anyway

between the options you talked about, i would say its a pretty equal toss-up between them all, the biggest difference for me is just surface material

u/blackmagic344 · 1 pointr/Surface

Thanks for your response! I decided to go with the Fujitsu pen as Amazon offered a faster delivery date and I saw a lot of people praising it. The only thing I noticed was that some of the pens I was looking at to purchase didn't say 'Lifebook' on the pen, like the one linked below, so that worried be at first that it might not be the same pen, but I saw it linked by other Surface Pro 2 users as well. Thanks for the suggestion!

u/Heat55wade · 1 pointr/heat

I got this for Christmas since a friend who does professional art stuff recommended it to me and it's been pretty great.

u/nebber · 3 pointsr/Design

I use one of these at work. (I'm a designer at a branding agency)

All I can say is: Try it and you'll never look back. I'd never used one before and asked if I could have one to try it out, a few hours later I was wondering how I'd used a mouse for so long - and using one now feels really weird. It was a bit frustrating at first (Excel especially, had a couple of rage moments) but now I'm a whizz at it.

One comment, the Intuos M is slightly too big for a 24in display (and in general, I think), it's a bit of a stretch from top to bottom, so I have the active area shrunk slightly.

With that, and your budget in mind, I would recommend the Bamboo range. My creative director uses and Intuous at work and a Bamboo at home, and swears by the Bamboo. I asked him last week about which to buy for home (work paid for the Intuos), he said not to bother paying the extra as they are comparable to use.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-Bamboo-PEN-TOUCH-2011/dp/B005OPKVF0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1321713407&sr=8-4

u/fungee_ · 1 pointr/wacom

Not at all! Ok so I just did some double checking - I had found that pen by selecting "CTH - Bamboo Fun / Pen & Touch / Intuos" from the dropdown, and the pen used to come up (not sure why it doesn't anymore). Also in this post, someone said that all the pens with the prefix LP are compatible with CTH-470 tablet.

BUT in several Amazon Q&As (here, here), Wacom said that it's not compatible :/ so sorry fam! Hope you hadn't made your purchase yet!

u/spasterz · 2 pointsr/graphic_design

People have said that the Bamboo is a good tablet and priced well at $59.99.

I personally use the Intuos 4 and I love it. I find the size of the tablet to be fine to work with and the size allows me to throw it in my bag along with my laptop.

u/NatahanStudios · 1 pointr/homeoffices

I bought my LE1700 a few years back for around $400, but it's significantly dropped price since then. There's one here on Amazon being sold for $289 by "amazinglaptops". It's hard drive (80GB) and RAM (4GB) have been maxed out and Windows 7 comes pre-installed. Also, unlike my LE1700, this one has a "View Anywhere" screen, which basically means it has a wider viewing angle and has a brighter picture. It is a marvelous deal, and I highly recommend getting one of these. You may want to upgrade the pen, since the default is a little cheap.

If you have any questions, please ask. I know quite a bit about this device.

u/lead-holder · 2 pointsr/learnanimation

I picked up this Monoprice tablet yesterday after owning this Wacom tablet. I'm already convinced that the Monoprice tablet is all around better than the other in price, drawing area, and it also has programmable buttons that I use to replace keyboard shortcuts in photoshop. Best $60 I ever put into anything art-wise.

u/inahga · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

I think we're way overthinking things here.

I have had success with the following pens on the S1Y:

X230t pen

Fujitsu Lifebook pen

There are certainly more pens than this that work but these are about as good as they get. Feel free to ask me questions about particular digitizer technologies/pens, as these topics are confusing.

u/Nenotriple · 2 pointsr/Surface

I got this one and it's really nice http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2

It has 2 buttons on the side, + eraser. You can also change out the tips for rubber, felt, and plastic, you have to buy those separate though. I really like the rubber (flex) ones, they feel great.

u/CullenJames · 1 pointr/college

Have you considered something like a LiveScribe pen? Might be a happy medium - you write with a pen, but it saves what you write and it can be uploaded to a computer. It also has an audio recorder, too - and it remembers what was being said while you were writing.

...but I've never used one myself. I linked to the pen on Amazon so you can look at reviews yourself, if you're interested in it. I really want one, but $100 is a little too steep for me.

u/Cei34 · 1 pointr/Surface

So I found your review on Amazon. So this pen works with the SP2, right? So far I only have the Bamboo Feel Pen and the Fujitsu Pen. I prefer the Wacom pen for precision and accuracy, but it lacks a second button and an eraser. Have you had a Wacom Bamboo Feel pen before? If so how does it feel compared to the Wacom UP-911E-02A?

P.S.: Thanks for sharing btw. Gonna get this for my SP2 when I can.

u/dicklord666 · 1 pointr/Surface

I'd recommend this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00791UTH2/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?amp%3Bkeywords=digitizer%20pen&amp%3Bqid=1394692530&amp%3Bsr=8-5&ref_=sr_1_5

It has two buttons and an eraser, has five star rating and also has reviews left by Surface Pro users confirming its superiority over the stock stylus. Good luck.

u/gabezermeno · 2 pointsr/photoshop

Its funny because I was just thinking about buying one a couple of minutes ago. I have fallen in love with the Wacom Bamboo Splash. It's 60$ from amazon and I think if you go into Best Buy they will price match it.

Fujitsu makes the best one i've used. Leagues better than the bamboo, since it has 2 buttons and an eraser as well!

This kills me. I have a livescribe smartpen but the Courier looked like the gadget of my dreams - a truly interactive notebook.

Someday...

u/jigpu · 2 pointsr/archlinux

Its odd that you should mention it but "right clicks like crazy" is exactly how I would describe trying to use the "Pro Pen 2" on an Intuos4. That particular pen is not compatible with the tablet, unfortunately. Its not a driver problem; the hardware itself is just incompatible. Does that look like your pen?

If that doesn't look like your pen, might it be an "Intuos Pro Pen" or the "Intuos 4 Grip Pen"? The Grip pen is definitely compatible (it should be what came in the box with the tablet), and the Pro Pen might be compatible (I've only used it for like 5 seconds with my Intuos4, but it doesn't immediately freak out).

u/asaltandbuttering · 2 pointsr/labrats

I have a pretty good workflow involving a Livescribe Echo Pen and gridlined notebooks. The pen can record meetings/seminars/etc and sync the audio up to the PDF that it creates. And, then you have the paper as a backup. I then organize all the PDFs in Evernote. Works well for me.

I have the CTL471 (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Splash-Tablet-CTL471/dp/B0089VGPII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377354261&sr=8-1&keywords=ctl471)

It seems to be the most popular choice at the moment, and works perfectly fine.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/wacom

Her Intuos model number is CTL-4100. Here is the pen I ordered. I notice that the model numbers don't match but I can't seem to find any pens that are compatible. Would it be easier just to get her a replacement tablet?

Thanks. I appreciate the insight. Next time I'll have to pay closer attention to the model numbers instead of relying solely on looks. :/

u/djangomango · 3 pointsr/Surface

My complaints about it:

  1. I either accidentally press the side button or have to make an effort to find the side button when I actually want to press it. It's flush with the barrel, which makes it difficult with the way I hold the pen.

  2. I'm not a fan of the black finish. It's almost like sandpaper. I might just return it for the carbon one.

I also have the Fujitsu T5000 pen, which is almost ideal for me. Having two side buttons is amazing. I do find that it's more sensitive to angle drift than the Bamboo Feel or even the SP pen, though.

I wish there were a two side button rocker switch version of the Bamboo Feel pen. That would be perfect.
u/MadSusie · 1 pointr/wacom

Apparently this one works.

https://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1550174219&sr=8-4&keywords=surface+pro+2+pen

Also, the Bamboo Feel stylus (model number CS300UW) works as well, but its super hard to find. There is a more expensive 'Carbon' version. Make sure its the right model number, because Wacom's naming conventions can get confusing.

The pen name is: 6.5mm-WacomPen-Raven-2
I could not find where to get tips specifically for it. But they look like this one, however, they are shorter https://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Standard-Nibs-Digital-ACK22211/dp/B07DX77DN3

From my understanding, you can use most active pens, thus it may be a better alternative if you are searching for different types of tips.

u/Nunire · 1 pointr/leagueoflegends

Most likely during spring break (so like in 2 weeks or so), if my toaster laptop can behaves.

For now you can have this:

I use Paint Tool Sai to sketch/outline/coloring the comics and I do the editing and arrangements in Photoshop. For sketching I use the airbrush tool and for the outlines and coloring I use the pen tool. I also use this thing to draw everything.
ALSO, if you really want to get into drawing with Paint Tool SAI, check out this guy , he has great drawing tutorials, all on SAI

u/kryptonnms · 2 pointsr/Surface

I use the Figitsu Lifebook pen T5000 http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2 with my Pro 1 (Since it's wacom, it would work with a pro 2 as well.) The plus side is it's cheaper than the Feel stylus, it uses standard Wacom nibs (not the smaller feel ones), has two buttons and an eraser.

I also use a matte screen protector. Really helps add resistance to the pen, especially using a felt pen-nib.

I use Paint Tool SAI primarily to draw. I love it.

u/whizbangpow · 1 pointr/stylus

I recently misplaced my CTL-480 pen and was wondering the same thing. I do most of my drawing on an iPad but kept the small Bamboo for the odd bit of retouching. I'll either give Astropad a shot or for the same-ish price grab an XP tablet.

Edit: going by @digitizerstylus link, this this would work, but at $65 for a refurb, you're better off just getting a new Intuos Small.

u/BangGood_is_a_SCAM · 2 pointsr/Surface

I've been doing a lot of research on this recently; after scouring the interweb for reviews and feedback, it looks like the Fujitsu T5000 is the best around for the SP1/SP2.

I feel like I need to show you all this piece of amazing

This will record your entire lecture, sync with your smartphone/tablet, and show what you're writing as the recording is being played back. It works with special dot paper to capture exactly what you write as you write it, and it's freaking magic. The pen is expensive, yes, I recently upgraded after using one that only worked via USB and was eight years old.

Edit: fixed the link

I don't know how decent it is compared to other tablets since I've only ever used this one, but I have the Wacom Bamboo tablet and have been using it for years. It's a pretty small tablet and it might be discontinued at this point, but you can get one on Amazon for about $100 if you don't mind buying second-hand (or $259 new).

u/Applegravy · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I understand your disdain from a standard capacitive stylus, with the rubber bubbles. those aren't quite as nice as the S pen. that being said, the S-Pen is what's known as a Wacom stylus. in theory, you can get just about any flagship and a $30 Wacom stylus. it all depends on if the digitizer the phone uses is compatible, and a lot of flagship devices now support the fine point, pressure sensitive Wacom stylus.

you should also be aware that Wacom themselves, despite making and designing the digitizer that supports a fine point stylus, also make the rubber tipped "generic" styli as well. something like the stylus I linked to should be exactly what you're looking for.

u/antm1222 · 3 pointsr/ipad

Hey. I’ve been an iPad user for years. You’re going to love it. If you’re wondering about the pencil, get this one.... Apple Pencil for iPad Pro, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016NY7784/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_BF52Bb0CK9A1R

Regarding the keyboard case, I’ve used them in and off over the years. They add good utility if you type a lot but also add bulk. In the case of the iPad you have they also need to be charged (not often but they do) and paired via Bluetooth. It’s up to you. If you’re going to type a lot - take a lotta notes and/or write papers then it could be useful.

As an alternative to a keyboard “case” you could get a regular case/folio and just get a Bluetooth keyboard for occasional use.

u/sarah11918 · 1 pointr/chromeos

I can tell you that anything that works with any Samsung Galaxy Note phone or tablet will work. Samsung did make a full-sized Note pen at one point (I have one, but don't see it currently listed on Amazon.)

Also, most old Tablet PC pens work. I use the pen from my Motion Computing tablet PC just fine, as well as this pen for Motion Computing designed to be more pen-like:

https://www.amazon.com/Additional-Digitizer-Pen-for-L-Series/dp/B000A3YEQI/

If you search for anything Motion Computing or Galaxy Note compatible, it should work fine. I have at least 8 styluses from various wacom-digitized devices I've used over the years (tablet PCs, Galaxy Notes, Asus EEE note, Entourage Edge dual book) and they all work on my Chromebook Pro.

u/proxyflare · 2 pointsr/wacom

In question to the text comment (not the title).

I stand by the Wacom Tablet PC pen, Fujitsu Lifebook Pen.

http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408563336&sr=8-1&keywords=lifebook+pen

Two side buttons and an eraser end alongside the writing end tip. Light as a pencil and handles just as such. The only gripe with it is, there is no pocket clip, but a loop to secure a small clippable keyring.

More pens to consider here. Pricing would vary across the board as well as availability.

I have been looking at the wacom bamboo stylus suggested, but this stylus has had my interest so far. I like the idea of an extra button on the side and it has an eraser, too. I'll probably order it tomorrow if not tonight.

u/Jobo162 · 1 pointr/Surface

Sounds like you would like the Fujitsu T5000

u/feureau · 1 pointr/drawing

You should be worried. It's too expensive. Only $55 on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Splash-Tablet-CTL471/dp/B0089VGPII

Also: You shouldn't be worried that this one is so cheap. It's miles better than what I had when I started (Graphire 2).

Plus: It's going to last for years. For instance: When I got the Graphire 2, Macs were still running on PowerPC. They updated the driver every so often. I'm running Graphire 2 on the latest macbook.

These things are built to last. You're gonna drool over some upgrades long before the one you buy dies. Don't get that anxiety to upgrade to more expensive models. It's not going to make your drawing any better. Trust me. I was there. It's my one mistake.

You can only go wrong by buying non-wacom tablet.

u/ShawnDaley · 1 pointr/comicbookart

So this should give you a good introductory to PS colouring while also moving up to some basic professional techniques, and I use one of these for my tablet.

The Wacom Bamboo series is affordable and really great to start with. There's a learning curve if you're coming from tangible media, but it's something you get used to.

You have to by special notebooks but they aren't expensive.

u/A_mailbox · 1 pointr/stylus

Its a Wacom EMR (it goes by the name "feel-it" under the driver name) digitizer. So, look for pens that work w/ that.
The Fujitsu Lifebook pen works very well, as does the wacom bamboo feel pen (though i don't recommend it due to the button being flush w/ the pen and the pen being prohibitively back heavy w/ the cap on.).

Personally i'd recommend the Lifebook pen. https://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2

Also, download Wacom's feel-it drivers since they come with settings to customize button output.

u/voiceofid · 1 pointr/Surface

the reason the SP3 nibs were free was because you cannot buy them in store. the SP4 nibs are available for purchase at MS, AMZN and Best Buy for under $10, you also get a holder and 3 additional nibs.

u/Qu1nlan · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This drawing tablet is pretty damn fancy, but I don't see me buying it for myself. I have other hobbies and whatnot... but I really do want to get into drawing more! I want to do comics.

u/TKodami · 1 pointr/Surface

I believe both nib sets will work with your Surface pen. They look like the same set of nibs with slightly different packaging (since both sets include the 2H, HB, and B nibs). A listing of that same package on Amazon mentions that those nibs will work with any Surface pen that has one side button, so that would include the SP6 pen. The nib set with the nib removal tool also work with the SP6 pen.

u/Chezz32B · 1 pointr/wacom

I personally never use the eraser side of the pen. Never really liked that plastic rubbing on screen feel.
Anyways, you're probably going to make things worse if you attempt to repair it yourself since the Pro pen 2 is firmly glued together. You'd need either some strong solvent or a hacksaw to take it apart.
Your best bet is to buy a new pen if you can't live without the eraser.

And try to to forcefully press on the pen next time. The pressure sensor is really sensitive.

The Surface Pro and Pro 2 use a Wacom pen that uses induction. It requires no power. If it doesn't work it's either the Wacom tablet functionality of the Pro itself is broken, or your Pen is broken inside.

The only way to test either is with a replacement pen or a different Surface Pro (1/2) (replacement pens can be bought but are not cheap https://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2 )
