For reference, discarding took about 4.5 months in my 1400 sq foot home and two storage sheds. I have started working on deep cleaning, upgrading necessary yet ugly items, and storage/organizing. I expect this to take another two months. I am watching "Clean My Space" and "Home Organizing by Alejandra.tv" channels on YouTube now to help with the process.

I am trying to keep in mind getting products out of original packaging, if possible, to limit exposure to constant advertising in my home. I am choosing to spend quite a bit on higher quality products that I love and expect to last many years. Fortunately, I have a budget that allows for some luxuries.

Bedroom

I started with my closet and these great baskets from the container store http://www.containerstore.com/s/whitewash-rattan-bins/d?productId=10037633&q=Large%20Rattan%20Bin%20Whitewash. The closet has a built in shoe organizer and I used my label maker to indicate what style shoes go on which shelf – heels, sandals, sneakers, flats and boots. I also labeled the shelf for each basket. Clothes hangers are all white. They used to be all kinds of colors, and I realized that white is more calming. I am now using these for my socks and undies since konmari folding did not quite work for me on those items http://www.amazon.com/MIU-COLOR-Collapsible-Underwear-Organizer/dp/B009A3HTXY. The folding works great for most of my other clothes. I am still pondering how to organize the nightstand drawers.

Kitchen

I bought a couple of 10" bamboo lazy susans for keeping my oils and vinegars organized in my cabinets. I bought some refrigerator organization units from InterDesign and the Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce savers. I intend to get Oxo food storage containers for dry goods.
I upgraded to these measuring spoons http://www.amazon.com/Cuisipro-Stainless-Steel-Measuring-Spoon/dp/B00004SU1I and these measuring cups http://www.amazon.com/Sagler-Measuring-Piece-Heavy-duty-Stainless/dp/B00V5EFWTO.

When I was discarding in my kitchen I found I did not really love my dinnerware so I got this set http://www.amazon.com/Corelle-Coordinates-18-Piece-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B00R790CLY plus matching lunch sized plates. I love the simple clean lines and the durability of the product. I downsized from a 12 person setting to 6 and it is great.

Bath

Have not done much here yet. I don’t have much need for storage organization in the cabinets. Still considering what I want to do with the drawers. Right now the drawers are still organized with small cardboard boxes from Glossybox, a cut down cereal box, and an empty jigsaw puzzle box. I upgraded my plunger and brush to nice stainless steel containers, and got a toilet paper holder that matches them http://www.amazon.com/Home-Basics-Vented-Stainless-Toilet/dp/B00JB20IDW.

Laundry

I replaced my bulky plastic basket with this http://www.amazon.com/Bajer-Design-Marketing-5234-Basket/dp/B0010KZCFC. It now hangs on a Command Hook next to the washer.

Car

I have repacked the car kit and 72 hour emergency kits in these for my car and my son's car. ttp://www.amazon.com/TrunkCratePro-Best-Premium-Trunk-Organizer/dp/B01AHK0J9Y. We live in an area prone to natural disasters so I like to be prepared wherever we are. I bought a car trash container (http://www.amazon.com/Highland-1932600-Car-Trash-Keeper/dp/B0027QWNGO) and created a little kit in a ziplock bag in the glovebox with essentials. Also, found tissues in a round container that fits perfectly in the door cup holder. I also bought a set of matching reusable grocery bags (http://www.amazon.com/ReBagMe-Reusable-Grocery-Reinforced-Handles/dp/B00Y17OIR4) so I don’t have the mismatched set. Finally, I have these on order (http://www.amazon.com/Car-Hammer-Seatbelt-Emergency-Must-Have/dp/B00CB8WM2S). Not organization related, just something I have been thinking that I needed for safety.

Purse

I reassessed what is in my purse. I used a couple small cosmetics bags that I had on hand and now have many things I wished I had at various times. Everything is neatly organized and I know exactly what is in there and why I have it. Everything from safety pins, to pen and notebook (http://www.amazon.com/Marble-Composition-Books-Notebooks-Green/dp/B00WRDIS9I), to a tiny flashlight, a granola bar in case I am out and hungry, a tide stain remover pen, a tiny Band-Aid package, tiny measuring tape (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-33-115-10-Foot-4-Inch-PowerLock/dp/B00009OYGH), my phone, my wallet, and my keys are always on the little hook. Not exactly Konmari minimalism, but those are all things that I wished I had at various times and I am happy that I will not be caught without again. It is a medium size purse, packed just right, with stuff easily accessible.

Home office

I have not done much there yet, but this drawer organizer is working pretty well http://www.amazon.com/Rolodex-Regeneration-Deep-Drawer-Organizer-21864/dp/B002JG48R4.

Command center

I am currently working on a “Command Center” to keep clutter off the kitchen counter. I have not purchased anything for that yet. I am writing down ideas, measuring, and considering products. http://thehappyhousie.porch.com/20-fabulous-command-centers-to-get-your-life-completely-organized/

Other random stuff:

I moved my CDs into a holder http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-DVDW-92-Capacity-Classic/dp/B00005ATMD and they now live on a Command Hook in my car. For movies I transferred them to these Sleeves http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-74604729-Movie-Sleeves/dp/B002JR2V7C and they now live in a small drawer in my living room. I tossed the packaging because it was bulky and does not give me joy.

I am using these in my linen closet http://www.amazon.com/Honey-Can-Do-STO-02986-Nested-Woven-Esspresso. This box for my jewelry http://www.amazon.com/Black-Leather-Jewelry-Travel-Case/dp/B0006JCGUM.

Not related to organizing, but I am loving these brushes for getting tiny spaces clean. So much better than an old toothbrush. http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Clean-Brush/dp/B003M8GMS6

If you made it this far, congrats. Something that I have noticed is that I can now shop with confidence, I can easily toss or donate the old unloved items, and I am organized enough to return those few items that don’t work as well as I hoped. My home feels much more open and inviting. I know where everything is and my clear vision is starting to come to fruition.

I love to shop, but love it even more when I'm helping other people because my budget increases exponentially :b

These, I dig the squares and bonus neat colors.
These have a nice pattern but they are very bold, not everyone is down with that.
Personally, I like these and these but that's more to my taste, YMMV :)

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Oh gosh, moving is such a big job. I hope you're at least looking forward to it, or upgrading yourself into this house. Hrm. So it's a completely blank slate. That's actually really exciting! You'll definitely need somewhere to sit, and this chair seems comfortable and high quality for a price that isn't too difficult to justify, if it's one of your primary living room pieces. And to go along with it, this end table has a really cool design, and looks functional to boot. It's not all that expensive! Corelle dinnerware sets are seriously the best, and I'm in love with this one. Also, this one is cheaper and a lot of fun.

Hopefully you find some good ideas and your move goes smoothly. Thanks for the contest!

u/pandasridingmonkeys · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My best advice to you is to get items that multitask. It will save you money and space. Use your pots to cook rice in instead of getting a rice cooker. (Rice is insanely easy to cook on the stove, just follow the instructions.) Get a nice blender that will also blend ice.. Get a decent vacuum with attachments - but you could probably find one dirt cheap at a yard sale. I'd also suggest investing in some good [Corelle] (http://www.amazon.com/Corelle-Livingware-16-Piece-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B0000DDU2O/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1373456893&sr=1-2&keywords=corelle+dinnerware) dishes. They are lightweight and last forever. One more thing, I'd recommend a good cookbook such as The Joy of Cooking. It'll even teach you how to boil an egg. You'll be surprised how much money you can save if you can cook the basics.

Also, talk to your roommates (I'm assuming you will have at least one roommate) and find out what they can contribute. Assuming that you are a broke college student like most everyone else (and will probably be graduating with thousands of dollars of debt) you don't want to spend a lot of money on things for your apartment - hence, the multitasking items. You'll find that you really don't need much!

u/Liedertafel · 11 pointsr/Cooking

So far I've just been browsing Kinja deals and had one recommendation as well as interested in others' recommendations. Here are some:

$52 Instant Pot 3 quart. Love the 6 quart version, but it's huge. I think 3 qt would've been fine for me.

$26 dinnerware set don't know this item.

$37 Lodge enameled cast iron dutch oven. Considering this. Anyone own it? Do I need a cast iron dutch oven? Is it better than a stainless steel one? Already have a cast iron pan.

$25 Stick blender

The sous vide immersion circulator was sold out but will be back, let's hope.

I hate to say it but I got square small white plates, large white plates, and square bowls for serving 4 at.... Walmart.

Very similar to these on Amazon
AmazonBasics 16-Piece Classic White Dinnerware Set, Square, Service for 4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R3Z4LZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_iYySAb28JEBES

We paid less then 20$. Perfect for my budget and they look clean and nice to serve guests on. Nice bright white, and they still look like the day we opened them up 2 years ago. We use them nearly every day and usually handshake them but have put them in the dishwasher many times. I was checking restaurants supply stores but the prices were for China and I don't need super high quality plates very often.

u/KittenAnne · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I really love this set ... I really like the square style of plates and dishes - they are just very visually appealing - and the black red and white is just very attractive to me.

However if you like blue and more traditional - These are pretty

and these are really visually interesting as well!

u/djayh · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

A 16-piece dinnerware set like this Corelle one. It gets you two sizes of plates, a set of bowls, and cups for 4. I like the glass/stoneware stuff because it's easier to clean than plastic, it's microwave- and dishwasher-safe, and you don't end up with cuts through it. I've got a set that's lasted 15+ years with only some faded paint. Oh, and silverware; I'd say 6 or 8 sets.

Bath mats. Not the ones that slip around the toilet; the little welcome mat to keep you from falling on your ass when you step out of the shower. And don't forget to put it through the wash on a regular basis.

9 Volt Batteries. Because who knows when the last time the smoke detector batteries were changed. Unless where you are moving has built-in detectors.

A battery-powered lantern. I like these better than a regular flashlight, but you'll want at least one of those, too.

A tool kit. Nothing too fancy, but it should at least have both types of screwdriver, a claw hammer, a tape measure, an adjustable wrench, WD40, twine, and duct tape. A multimeter can be nice in certain situations, but if you don't know what you'd use it for, don't bother. Since I assume you're going to be renting -- even if you're as hopelessly unhandy as I am -- having this stuff on hand can usually keep things together until you can convince the maintenance guy to show up.

u/sweetpea89 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

So...I kind of super really need this. I took it off highest priority because we got some paper plates that we can make do with...but honestly, we need them.

I will let you decide if they're feasible or even in the range of need you're looking for. Thank you so much for this contest! You're absolutely wonderful! :) <3

Let's use cost as a basis for comparison, because it's about the only thing we can use, without detailed study, of total input costs of one thing versus another (all raw material and energy input costs, no recycling or reclamation costs).

A 32 piece dinnerware set from Pfaltzgraff costs $70:
https://www.amazon.com/Pfaltzgraff-Sylvia-Piece-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B01ATQJ3N4

A 44 Count (x5 - 220 total plates): costs $17.
https://www.amazon.com/Dixie-Paper-Plates-Inches-Count/dp/B008R6LO5O

Assuming a family of four, and that the total costs of the ceramic plates is just in the plates (not the cup, saucer or bowl):

Paper: 220/4 = 55 meals. $17/55 = $0.30/meal Forever.
At that rate, the Pfaltzgraff pays for itself in 234 meals.

Less than a year, assuming we only eat one meal a day. Faster otherwise.

Capital depreciation of both paper and ceramic should, in healthy economies, be included in the price of each product - otherwise the manufacturers couldn't stay in business. But considering the Amazon economy, it's possible this is distorted with debt, and hence would require a very thorough analysis of costs from start to finish.

But in a world where economies are healthy, a simple price comparison would should ceramic to be a winner. Raw math says ceramic wins in energy costs (and that cost is including packing materials).

For "not quite paper plates", look into disposable china.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DDQ6GMS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_Whqazb5952T2K

Personally, if I were planning to do this for the next several years, I would invest in some simple dinnerware sets.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q5X29R8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_5pqazb9BAWP3Y

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BFC6F00/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_3rqazb83KQ3MB

You could mix and match a couple, too to avoid an entirely plain white table. It'll be cheaper to buy sets rather than plate by plate. Consider the coffee mugs for after dinner or in case of brunch.

Also, look into IKEA for simple, super affordable sets.

Dinnerware that combines a simple, rustic design with a soft ruffled edge. It allows you to coordinate ARV with other porcelain to get different characters in your table settings.

Dishes

Corelle lasts forever. I was cleaning up after the CO fires last summer and the only dishes that survived was corelle, pretty sure. :)

[Coffee Pot] (http://www.amazon.com/Continental-Electric-4-Cup-Coffee-Maker/dp/B0075WC644/ref=sr_1_9?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1377795937&sr=1-9&keywords=coffee+pot)

Colorful Silverware

Cheapest item ($.92)

Something else

Good luck with your first contest!

u/silkrobe · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Porcelain is good. It's generally lighter than ceramic and much less likely to chip, but much cheaper than bone china.

Ikea always has a nice white set, but they also often have a patterned set or two in porcelain. World Market is similar. If all you're looking for is a little bit of color around the rim, there's these: www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-16-Piece-Stripe-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B00Q5X29R8

u/anonymousssss13579 · 2 pointsr/Cooking

Amen to white plates. I have a set my mom got me from Amazon Basics and I looovvvee them (AmazonBasics 18-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 6 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019EEUQ2O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ahx8Cb0FRZHFC)

They look so much nicer than any other plates, and are a good price. (Plus the bowls are huge, which I really like. No wimpy bowls for me)

u/sterling_mallory · 1 pointr/food

It's actually a pretty average sized dinner plate, the tortillas are small. They're maybe 5 inches in diameter.

This is the dinnerware set.

And these are the tortillas.

u/hbic34 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

When I was pregnant with my oldest I would eat pickles and cheese subs from Miami Subs yum yum.
I would really enjoy these new plates for my new house that I bought.
