Hi! We adopted a four/five-year-old frenchie a few months ago and have had great success getting her yeast infections, fur, and overall health under control. She was in literally the same situation before she was rescued.

Our vet prescribed us ketoconazole wipes, which you can get on amazon (for less than the vet price! and it's the same thing!). These have done wonders for her face, paws, and bottom end. If he has yeast on his feet, he probably has it in his tail crease as well. At first, we were going through a pack of these every 3 weeks. Yikes. You can find them here: https://www.amazon.com/Mal-Wipes-Support-Healthy-Dechra/dp/B01IO9563E/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia?hvadid=178372316526&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9002006&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=10651630771226582108&hvtargid=aud-647006051489%3Akwd-33682989493&keywords=mal-a+ket+wipes&pd_rd_i=B01IO9563E&pd_rd_r=17b03f45-b65a-4d10-915a-5f2d282f3f38&pd_rd_w=LhGqy&pd_rd_wg=7jM7d&pf_rd_p=23754a30-606a-4e0a-ba42-b43d14507217&pf_rd_r=NP7E26CJCVV82H56D8V6&qid=1554385994&s=gateway

She came to us on a grain free diet but the vet put her on a grain-included diet for her heart murmur. We give her Honest Kitchen food and it's been working incredibly well. If you want to remain grain-free, they have an option for that. I linked her favorite flavor. Her tear stains have been clearing up, coat is all shiny, and yeast is more manageable since switching from kibble to this. Also, they have a great intro offer on prime. https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/dog-food/meals/dehydrated-grain-free/dehydrated-grain-free-chicken-dog-food

Our Phoebe is big for a frenchie (30-35 lbs) and loves walks. She and I do 3-4 miles a day. She also loves to go for hikes and once a week will do a short run. People will tell you that these are "lethargic apartment dogs" but it completely depends on the particular dog. As yours gets healthier, his energy level will increase a lot.

Also, Phoebe loves clothes. She did not have clothes before us. She will pick out a shirt to wear if I give her options. Her favorites are the Hanna Anderson dog pajamas (here: https://www.hannaandersson.com/discontinued-product/50902-AH1.html?dwvar_50902-AH1_color=AH1&cgid=). I think it's because the fabric is super soft. She also wears sweaters when it's cold, and will pick out which one she wants to wear. She has learned how to help get herself dressed.

Frenchies should wear harnesses, not collars, because of their lack of defined neck and general lack of skill at breathing. If you're looking to spend money, the canada pooch ones are double adjustable and comfortable. Before she got that one as a special present, she had this one that my parents' beagle used to wear. She loved it, but the elastic was getting old! link here: https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-EasySport-Harness-Adjustable-Reflective/dp/B00HY6TFKE/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=dog+harness+with+handle&qid=1554386488&s=gateway&sr=8-7

Phoebe loves her toys and is a big chewer. Strong mouth. The toys that have held up best to her are these strange platypus ducks https://www.amazon.com/Multipet-Large-Dog-Toy-Yellow/dp/B000084E7Y/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=duck+dog+toy&qid=1554386781&s=gateway&sr=8-3 and her trash panda, which she picked out at home depot https://www.homedepot.com/p/Loonies-Raccoon-54021/307751080.

I have lots of opinions and recommendations so feel free to ask me questions! I love to talk about Phoebe. You can also follow her on instagram at @phoebephilothefrenchie.

Food:

  • Orijen. We rotate around between foods, but always come back to this one. Great coats, no dental problems, consistent energy levels, good digestion, all around good.
  • Durapet steel non-skid dishes. Nice solid steel construction, and the rubber ring stays put even with frequent washing.
  • Fish oil! Right now we use Kirkland brand capsules from Costco, which the dogs gobble up like candy.

    Leashes/collars/harnesses:

  • "WMC" leather leashes. 3/4" 4ft long, perfect weight and length for everyday training walks. I have no idea what this brand is but it's the best leash I've ever owned. Stamped with "WMC" which I assume is an identifying mark of some sort.
  • brass id plates from gun dog supply. They last forever and work great.
  • Not a commercial product, but, a ponytail tie around tags to silence them.
  • Perfect Fit fleece lined harness for dogs with thin fur. The most comfortable option I've found.
  • Sense-ible harness. A simple, classic front-clip harness. No frills, does the job without unnecessary cost or weird features.

    Grooming:

  • Miller's Forge nail clippers. Simple, cheap, sharp, better than the expensive alternatives.
  • Earthbath grooming wipes have been a godsend for my allergy dog. Wiping him down every day drastically reduces his seasonal allergy symptoms.
  • Epi-Soothe shampoo for itchy skin.
  • Rubber brush for short coats. No particular brand--brands have evolved over the years. Zoom Groom is popular now, but anything made of flexible grippy rubber with fingers/nubs will work.
  • Burt's Bees shampoo has been a pleasant surprise. No strong perfume, and leaves coats soft without drying them out.
  • CET toothpaste. The poultry flavor is a big hit--way better than some other brands.

    Beds:

  • Kuranda beds. No stuffing to trap allergens, tall enough to let the roomba underneath, and sturdy as all hell. Throw a washable blanket on top for snuggling and it's the perfect dog bed. Seriously, if you take nothing else away from this, just remember Kuranda.
  • ruff wear roll up mats. Mine are way older and don't look like the product pictured there, but hopefully the new ones are similar. Waterproof no-slip rubber backing, fleece top that lasts through serious abuse (read: digging), and a thin padded layer that doesn't bunch. Perfect for camping, mat training, training classes, any and all travel.
  • Berkley & Jensen brand dog beds/throws. The ones I got were like thick blankets, canvas on one side and fleece on the other side with a thin layer of padding in the middle. They're amazing. Folded in half it's a crate mat. Folded twice it's a dog bed. Spread out it's a floor protector while feeding gross bones. Spread out it's also a car seat protector.

    Toys

  • Orvis leather toys. They appear not to be sold currently, but I have a leather retrieving dummy that was perfect for intro retrieve training with a dog who was utterly disinterested in toys. The soft leather enticed him to pick it up, which was all the help I needed at the time.
  • JW treat ball. Large opening, so perfect for chunks of biscuit or jerky. Large pieces of treats can be squeezed through the flexible opening for a challenging game. Soft rubber bounces quietly, does not clang around on hard floors or against hard furniture like buster cube or kong wobbler.
  • Classic Kongs. I take this one for granted, but really useful toy. Stuff it with food before you leave for work and your dog has something productive to focus on for a little while at least.
  • Goughnuts. Virtually indestructible rubber chew toys.

    Training goodies

  • Starmark clicker. Loud click. raised button gives you more options than a typical box clicker.
  • iClick clicker. Very quiet click. Also with a raised button for versatility.
  • Terry Ryan treat bag. Again, mine is really old so I hope the new one is similarly good. The hinges pop open/shut with no trouble, way more convenient than a drawstring. Mine has been used and washed regularly for 6+ years without harming it.
u/dontcryferguson · 5 pointsr/Greyhounds

Hello to a fellow Coloradan!

Things you'll need:

-A crate, either wire or airline works. Get the largest size you can reasonably fit (42-48 inches if you can). Check craigslist for sure, as you might not need it forever, and people are always selling and reselling crates.

-Dental supplies. I use water additive for my pups (a few drops in daily drinking water), as well as tooth wipes, foam cleaner. I also give my dogs daily chew things (ears, dental treats, etc) to do ALL I can to avoid dental cleanings. My male hound is coming up on 10 years old, and never once has needed a dental!

-Boots of some kind, though my guy only tolerates pawz rubber boots. They are disposable and reuseable, but make walking in cold CO weather MUCH easier. Otherwise their paws tend to go numb quickly, usually a good 1/2 mile from your house!

-I unfortunately don't have recommendations on jackets, as I got my dog's coat secondhand from his rescue on the east coast, and also got another from a greyhounds in gettysburg back when I lived in MD. DO get something really warm though. I put a coat of some kind on my guy if it's less than 40 degrees out, and do the heavier one if it's less than 20. You can also layer up if need be. Jammies are also something to consider (mine can't deal in the house if it's less than 69 degrees inside and paces around a lot trying to stay warm): This kind is great and very inexpensive for indoor use! I think we got the large, and it's still a bit big. A smaller female might just need a medium.

-Chews. In my experience, greyhounds aren't big on nylabones and antlers...the most cost effective ones ;). They LOVE cow/lamb ears, bully sticks, natural bones, compressed rawhide, etc. The site I linked to above, Jefferspet.com, has a great, inexpensive selection of natural chews that seem to agree better with my hound than any of the artificial stuff (greenies, dentastix, busy bones, etc. that are high in fat and gluten products).

-Consider a dremel tool for their nails. I still trim manually from time to time. but the dremel takes the guess work and stress out of possibly nicking your dog's vein. I have the dog lay down for me on a bed and work on a few nails at a time at first, up to 3 seconds at a time (it gets hot!). Some dogs nails grow faster than others, but for beginnings, I find they take to this much easier. It IS very important to keep their nails nice and rounded, as they are so easily prone to scratching/injury on themselves.

-A first aid kid. Your dog will get scrapes and cuts on the regular, especially if you do anything outdoorsy in CO. Invest in some gentle antiseptic, gauze, vet wrap, neosporin, liquid bandage, etc. and always know right where your kit is. A lot of people see greyhounds and assume they were abused by the scars some have; it's difficult to explain to them that most of the scars they've incurred have actually been during their time with me! They can be very clumsy, and particularly when playing with other dogs, a paw scratch or playful nip can result in stitches -_-.

This isn't obviously a comprehensive list, but just some ideas of things others might not have mentioned. Good luck to you on your greyhound journey!

u/micrographia · 2 pointsr/dogs
  • I have this Crate and this seems like it would be a good size. Don't get it any bigger than you have to or the dog is more likely to pee/poop in one corner and sleep in the other.

  • If she's smelly and seems scared of a bath, some pet wipes will hold you over until she seems more chill

    Toys:

  • Get a Kong, fill with cooked sweet potato, peanut butter, plain yogurt with a little kibble mixed in, etc, then freeze till solid, and give to your dog for a treat that stimulates them mentally, keeps them busy, and helps with separation anxiety.

  • Hide-a-Squirrel. An interactive toy- you stuff the log with squirrels and any other toys you have and let your dog have a blast tearing them out

  • Treat dispensing toy you can use to actually feed your dog her meals if she eats too fast. I like this one because you can change the difficulty by making the hole openings smaller or larger

  • Lastly if you have no idea what kind of toys she likes and are striking out (and have a little extra dough lying around and want to treat yo-self), you might want to try ordering BarkBox (you can almost always get a free month when signing up so google coupon codes before ordering). I did it for about a year and a half and was always blown away by the quality and the amazing way they curate each box to fit a theme. The toys were always adorable!

I didn't know about the 2 Week Shutdown when I got my dog and while things turned out okay in the end, I definitely think it would have been VERY beneficial to do it. So best of luck and please update us with pics when she gets home!
u/StuddedMohawk · 2 pointsr/Havanese

My 1 year old Havanese has never been cut. We put his hair up with a hair tie so it's not in his eyes and he gets a bath once a week, brushed nightly, and sees a professional bi weekly.

This is the brush I use, Its pretty standard.

Here's the de-matting tool - This is a super important piece to the home grooming puzzle. It will allow you trim the matts into smaller matts that can be brushed out. I highly recommend watching several youtube videos of people using it so you don't hurt your little guy.

Detangling spray - I use this at every brushing. I use one hand to push his hair up and i pat and swoop the hair down to make sure I get every little hair on his body. It's a process.

and finally Leave-on conditioner - I give him baths with a 2 in 1 puppy shampoo and then i use this leave-on conditioner. Hydrated hair knots less so using as much moisturizers as you can will help.

I understand I spend a lot of time and money on my dogs hair, but for me, I wasn't going to spend thousands of dollars on a purebred to just shave him. I want my purebred to look like a purebred and he's the happiest boy ever! I hope this helps!

u/girafffegirl · 3 pointsr/Goldendoodles

For my doodle, BioSilk Therapy Detangling and Shine Spray has been a lifesaver - makes brushing out the tangles/mats a heck of a lot easier (also lessens the pain for your pup!)

Remember when you brush you shouldn't just brush one way... you need to go backwards, sideways, pretty much every angle to make sure you aren't missing any mats tight up against the skin. I recommend using a comb with different bristle lengths and different types of brushes.. after experience, you'll know which one is best for each situation.

Depending on your pup, different sections will need more attention than others. My girl gets bad tangles behind and on her ears, her face/cheeks, on top and bottoms of paws, and collar/harness area. I brush those areas more frequently than everything else.

Also, reward him/her with a treat after each brushing! At this point, right when we're finished brushing, my dog trots over to the closet and stares at me expecting her treat :)

u/LNG · 14 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

This definitely looks like fungal acne to me aka Pityrosporum (Malassezia) Folliculitis - especially since you said wearing a hat and sweating exacerbates it and that it's spreading. Check out this article. It's super informative.

I've found great success with these wipes for some bumps on my forehead that I figured were fungal. The wipes are for pets but oh well, they have active ingredients that will eliminate the excessive fungal growth and are easy to use (I use 2x per day and on workout days before and after I sweat). Make sure to study the article to see if any of the products in your current routine feed the fungus!

u/dzsquared · 3 pointsr/pugs
  1. kiss pug's forehead just above the nose often, especially while cupping their face in your palm. getting them used to you loving on them around their sensitive smooshes makes the rest easier.

  2. for routine care - using a damp paper towel, wipe out nose folds and give forehead kisses. wipe again with a dry paper towel to remove moisture.

  3. for care when they are rubbing their face, it is stinky, or periodic routine care - wipe with an antibacterial/antifungal wipe like these: https://smile.amazon.com/Pet-MD-Chlorhexidine-Wipes-Ketoconazole/dp/B0180A1J38/
u/oOTAGOo · 2 pointsr/Bulldogs

Earthbath makes some awesome ear wipes that we have used for a while now. Stevie doesn't like getting her ears cleaned but it's way easier using a wipe on your finger than a swab or q-tips. You can pick them up from most good pet stores like Mud Bay or online. I highly recommend. Oh and they also have eye wipes. We actually use them on her whole face to keep her wrinkles clean.

u/jynnjynn · 2 pointsr/AussieDoodle

Ive got a couple, because I have no impulse control.

for difficult tangles I use cowboy magic.

For just normal brushing when theyre a LIL tangly, but nothing serious I mostly use this one. It smells like those strawberry candies old people sometimes have. It's the go to when theyve come in from rain or snow, or when theyve had an excessive amount of fun at the dog park.

and this one is what I generally use to brush em out after a bath/towel dry cause it makes them super soft.

Biggest thing in the winter is to make sure you keep their paw pads trimmed, and any extra side fluff trimmed down to foot size. The fluffy feet are like mud sponges.

u/monstersoprano · 2 pointsr/dogs

I have a dog who’s super prone to UTIs. For it’s a delightful combination of having posterior bladder displacement (her bladder sits in the wrong spot and can’t fully expand), obsessive drinking behaviors and a hooded vulva that was hiding some weird skin infection to boot. I would highly, highly recommend having your vet take a second look at her anatomical structure to make sure she doesn’t have a recessed vulva and potentially doing a more comprehensive culture from that area. In the meantime you can help things along by using wipes to keep the area clean (I like these guys, use them morning and night).

u/savage_in_a_sundress · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

SimpleSkincareScience recommends medicated pet wipes as a fungal acne treatment; they'd be easy to pack with you.

The SSS fungal acne guide has some great product recs; I'd try Simple Micellar Water decanted into a travel spray bottle for your cleanser and Cerave Baby Cream as your moisturizer. Both are fungal acne safe, cheap and easy to find; so minimal investment if they don't work out long term.

u/MrMeiko · 0 pointsr/homeowners

There are products like this spray that might help? Also shampoos out there intended to help with allergy relief. Have you tried anything like that?

u/dizzyvonblue · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This is our Bambi we rescued her about this time last year. Her favorite food is pizza, and she loves chasing cats. Bambi is so big, her toys usually don't last long, she can skin a tennis ball in like 2 minutes.

She really loves ball/rope toys rope toys are her favorite, but she destroys them too quickly, ones that have a ball on it, she will tend to keep it longer.

Our past doberman,Felix had one of these in blue and it held up extremely well.

Bambi would probably appreciate these eye wipes she gets a lot of eye gunk.

u/englishamerican · 10 pointsr/CatsInSinks

I bought these wipes from amazon, and they are so great. My cat is allll white and she was stressed out all day every day at the shelter and slept in the litter box :( but when I brought her home, I got those wipes and it helped both of us get her clean again. Over time he will also get white again as cats always clean themselves so I wouldn't worry too much about bathing him :)

u/popomopo · 10 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Nizoral also breaks me out badly. I have fungal acne and use 1% ketoconazole wipes. They're marketed for pet use but the ingredient list looks fine to me. I've been using them for 2 months 3x a week and it keeps my fungal acne completely at bay. I get them off amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Pet-MD-Chlorhexidine-Wipes-Ketoconazole/dp/B0180A1J38/ref=sr_1_13)

Active Ingredients : Chlorhexidine 2%, and Ketoconazole 1 % in an alcohol-based solution. Inactive Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol, Nonoxynol-9, lactic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Glycerine, Fragrance, Methylisothiazolinone

u/katiemaco7 · 1 pointr/Fungalacne

So I’m on this same road and recently hunted through EVERYTHING that touches my face (hair products included) for ingredients that feed fungal acne... and if a product has any of those ingredients, it is booted from my routine. Period. That has helped a surprising amount. My routine is prettyyyyy bare bones at the moment, and my skin seems to LIKE it.

I also hate putting shampoo on my face because it BURNS but these ketoconazole wipes are not harsh on my skin. I’m even able to use them at morning and at night without feeling like I’m damaging my face. They’re for pets (I know, I know. Weird.) but they’ve noticeably improved my skin so far and they don’t burn. I have high hopes that being consistent with this will get my skin back to a healthy baseline.

u/wordgirrl · 1 pointr/cats

There are! The ones I’ve used are actually rated way lower than two others on Amazon. Looks like I’m getting this next time: Pogi's Grooming Wipes - 100 Deodorizing Wipes for Dogs & Cats - Large, Hypoallergenic, Fragrance-Free https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010MVG6ZY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OLAkDbN2MYPGV
There’s also waterless shampoo that you spray on a soft cloth: Vet's Best Waterless Cat Bath | No Rinse Waterless Dry Shampoo for Cats | Natural Formula | 4 Ounces https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002AQN2M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WNAkDbHEXTTP8
Lots of other brands and scents of both.

u/octopop · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

Pal who wrote the loooong post about malassezia suggested using DOGGIE WIPES on your face cause they have ketoconazole in them. The Nizoral shampoo has the same active and has been the most effective thing I've tried so far for my bumps. Is this absolutely insane or worth a shot? I've been looking for an alternative to the shampoo cause it's so drying, but cannot find a cream with ketoconazole. I may try another anti-fungal product but I'm scared it will not be as effective. Here's a link to the doggie wipes.

Just for funsies, here's a link to the cream I'm considering. Any opinions/guidance on this is appreciated. Thanks!! ✨

u/Blue_Zoid · 1 pointr/poodles

This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/BioSilk-Therapy-Detangling-Protecting-Dogs/dp/B01330IKAA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542762139&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=dog+detangler+spray&psc=1

I also use a good conditioner to help work the mats out in the bath. This is what I use: https://www.amazon.com/Chris-Christensen-After-Bathe-Conditioner/dp/B00CRKLOHO/ref=lp_3020782011_1_12?srs=3020782011&ie=UTF8&qid=1542762378&sr=8-12

The only other suggestion I have would be to work at the mats little by little. My poodle gets mats behind her front paws very easily. I brush her every day, however, some days it is really bad. My poodle uses a similar type harness, but i've never had any mating issues with it. She also wears a collar with a velvet lining which seems to help.

u/doggymomofone · 3 pointsr/dogs

I usually use one of the dog wipes to wipe him down every time after the walks. They do a good job of getting rid of mud and dirt. Alternatively, a wet towel with one of these no rinse shampoo to wipe him down ! Either way works well while keeping him clean and smelling good !

u/Kalistar · 2 pointsr/dogs

Owner of a naughty shih poo and dog groomer here. I basically went to grooming school because I was sick of paying for his monthly grooms! I'd definitely recommend a small table and grooming arm, a small dryer, a pair of adjustable clippers (you can use these to trim pads and do sanitary cuts as well as regular clipping), and either a set of clipper combs or just the lengths you like. I'd also recommend a pair of straight shears and thinning shears. I use Aussie Dog shears at work because they are inexpensive ($99 for 3 pairs) and have a good weight to them but any petedge shears would probably be fine for the light trimming you'd be doing.

I groom my dog once a month usually. I bathe, dry, brush and comb him. I dremel his nails, pluck his ears, give him a sanitary trim and shave his pads. I usually use a 1/2in clipper comb on him just to keep him tidy (he really hates being brushed so I try to keep that to a minimum. I then round his feet and use my thinning shears on the corners of his eyes. I usually give him a little schnauzer head for simplicity (#10 blade on the top of his head and ears, little eyebrows and just trim the beard) but I have given him a shaved poodle face in the past.

You can get these things and clean his anus for him. I've never had a long-haired cat before, but I imagine it might be difficult for him to get back there with all the fur in the way? Those wipes are what I use for my cat who has seizures and ends up peeing on his back legs and they work great. I buy from a small, locally-owned store near me. I will say he wasn't a fan of the green tea fragrance and resists much less if I buy the unscented kind.

"malassezia furfur" is often called a yeast or yeast like. "one should always bear in mind that Malassezia yeasts are integral components of the skin microbiota, and therefore the therapeutic target should be controlling the Malassezia population rather than eradicating it."

usually means treating the flair up, then using products that don't feed them. It need a long term treatment. Like a nizoral face mask once a month or "Stridex in the doggy box" as SimpleSkinCareScience puts it.

There will be some staining to the fur during this time. You can do a thorough grooming/cleaning job after the heat is completely over.

While she is in heat, you can use a gentle shampoo to topically wash that area every couple of days as was suggested, or I use gentle pet wipes with no harsh irritants or chemicals like these. These are moist enough that you can clean small areas of fur by rubbing the fur between index finger and thumb with the wipe. I like to do this every day not so much because I'm concerned about the staining, but because it forces me to check the smell and consistency of the discharge to make sure all is normal.

I wouldn't use human hand sanitizer, the alcohol will likely dry out their paw pads. Try grooming wipes, they work great!

Clean with warm water and a soft cloth or even Q-tips. Does his nose get dry? We use a nose moisturizer, Bully Butter.

We started using these wipes for our pug when he started showing signs of a fold infection. We used them 2x a day (morning and night) and he cleared up within a week.

We used Mal-a-ket wipes as our pup consistently had fungal infections that caused his toes to itch. We always equated his smell with Fritos which sounds familiar. You could give that a try.

He is handsome!

Btw, my griffy suffers from the same dry nose issue and we found an amazing product to get rid of the nose barnacles! After just a couple applications, you'll be wiping off black bits of dead, dry skin! I swear by this stuff.

Less stress for the bunny.
Also, rabbits can get hypothermia even if it is not that cold out. They don't dry easily and it is very stressful for them to be wet and to be blowdried.
