Yay! This made my (very crappy till now due to work) day! I am sooooo happy your precious girl is feeling better. I hope she'll be back to her normal self by later today 100%.

Yeah the herbs thing is something I learned from the rescue I volunteer at when I first got there... apparently the herbs being well loved by bunnies and having a strong fresh appealing aroma can really stimulate appetite. The stems also are quite rich in fiber and help to get the gut moving and dill in particular has gut mobility properties. You can also rinse them and offer wet for extra hydration which also helps to recover from bouts of tummy issues.

Treats are a great way to check whether the bunny will eat anything at all. If refusing even favorite treats you know have a pretty critical situation on hand to get looked at by the vet ASAP... refusing favorite treats is usually a pretty bad sign. But offering treats to get bunny to eat anything at all (totally get this idea) can sometimes make tummy problems worse by introducing more sugar into an already upset tummy and disturbed bacteria in the gut. Just something to do with caution. But you could try to these digestive biscuits which lots of buns love and which can help promote a healthy digestive system https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Science-Digestive-Supplement-transition/dp/B007PZEBKS/ref=asc_df_B007PZEBKS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=218413592118&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3254896354315320360&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9001881&hvtargid=pla-354901388116&psc=1.

Oh and keep those baby/infant gas drops I mentioned on hand... they are 100% safe to give to bunny anytime you feel tummy might be even a tad gassy via a small syringe and can sometimes save your buns life when a vet is not immediately available. Oh btw what an awesome vet to do a house call!!!

Oh and of course you are most most welcome! Wishing your girl a speedy and 100% recovery from all issues!

Throwing in my support for what everyone else has said.

Since you're looking for guinea pig products, I'll link you a few things that have worked for us.

Kaytee guinea pig kibble: My pigs love the little orange pieces in this food. Made with Timothy so it is lower in calcium. I never tried the Oxbow adult pellets you got, but I do have the young pig pellets. All the pigs love it so I'd say you got a good buy.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ZXO106

Treat wise I just got these two from Oxbow. Pigs absolutely loved it. Several of them tried stealing from each other. -_- I told them they only get one each! I also got some Critical Care just in case any of my pigs goes downhill and needs some just in case. Critical Care comes in 3 types: Original blend (coarser ground, green bag), Apple-banana (coarser ground, green bag), and Fine ground in a red bag (for syringe feeding). I got some Original and mashed some apple sauce and a little slice of banana in it. Pigs seemed to enjoy eating it out of a spoon. lol.

Word of caution about the Timothy. My family is allergic to timothy hay. I've heard plenty of stories about people giving away their guinea pig cause they were 'allergic.' I suspect many of the times the people were just allergic to the hay. If your family starts getting a bad case of the hay fever - think about switching to Mountain Grass/Orchard Grass.

Once you guys really start getting into guinea pigs and start considering cutting costs down by buying in bulk. Look for your local feed and grain stores. They'll have bales of hay, big bales of wood chips and other supplies. I get a bale of Mountain Grass for $20ish.

If you are looking for corrogated plastic and can't find any at your local hardware stores. Call local sign making companies. I recently had to buy two sheets of 4ft by 8ft. None of the hardware stores could help, but this sign company I called thought it was the most hilarious order! It wasn't a big thing for them since they get sheets every day. Perfect match! Being a piggy owner is a lot about improvising and thinking of creative solutions. Good luck!

u/Wildflowers83 · 2 pointsr/guineapigs

I'm so sorry to hear your piggy is sick! It might be a good idea to go get him checked out by a vet to make sure everything is okay, especially if he is loosing weight.

I wouldn't offer this snack to your pig as a way to help him gain wieght. This treat stick is more like candy and not really recommended for guinea pigs.

You definitely want to up the vitamin C intake to give his immune system a boost! Think fresh produce like apples and oranges and kale. I (as well as many other Piggy parents) would recommend a product called Critical Care to help him gain weight. You may be able to get some from a local vet, pet store or it can be purchased on Amazon.

It's a powder that you mix with water and piggies loveee the taste!

I hope this has been a little helpful!
Hoping your piggy feels better soon! 🧡

  1. She doesn't look much GSD/Retriever. She looks more maybe Golden/Lab? Or Golden/collie of some sort. Her story is so so sad. :( Good thing she will be in a happy home for the rest of her life!

  2. Slow walks, mostly. Go her speed. Try walking on grass more, less of an impact. Flatter areas more than hilly spots if you can. If you have access to water and she enjoys that, some swimming might be great since it's a low impact exercise.

  3. Honestly most senior foods will probably be fine as low as it's not low low tier food like Old Roy. Blue Buffalo is pretty good quality but in my own opinion I feel it's a bit overpriced. When I took in a senior dog for a while he got Fromm Senior food-he seemed to enjoy that and do well on it, but while it is high quality it was pretty pricy and if he was in my care longer I probably would have transitioned him to something a bit cheaper. Quite honestly though as long as it's formulated to meet her nutritional needs and AAFCO and all that, and she does well on it, then go for it! Try glucosamine supplements to help her joints out. Most dogs love them anyways, and they tend to smell weirdly good too. If you need somewhere to start with those, I work at a dog kennel and a common brand I see people have for their pups is this one and this one probably because they're fairly cheap and come with a lot for their size.
u/jlynnbizatch · 7 pointsr/BabyBumps

I would also highly recommend crate training your pup. It may take a while, but it'll be well worth the time investment in the long term. Something that helped me with crate training my Aussie mix was having a cover for the crate (here's a good example). It gave pup a little more sense of being and security. As for the Thundershirt, I have used one on another dog that had separation anxiety. I definitely noticed that it helped to calm him down. I wouldn't say that it was a complete 180 degree difference, but I found it to be well worth the $40. One last suggestion would be to try a heartbeat pillow. Once more, not something that is going to completely solve the problem of separation anxiety, but definitely an inexpensive tool that can help calm your pup. Best of luck!

u/YahtzeeDii · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

I've had a lot of success with these calming treats. It may be worthwhile to look into a supplement like these -- there's little risk and potentially high rewards.

Also, licking and sniffing are calming behaviors. Lick mats loaded with frozen peanut butter, yogurt, or dog food worked great for my dogs. You can also try snuffle mats with simple treats or kibble. I know it's easy to overfeed dogs, but I'd prioritize her mental health over any minor weight gain over a two-month period. You can always put her back on her regular diet when she settles into her new home.

Exercising might also help relieve the stress! Take her for a nice walk a few times a day, if she's able to relax outside.

Good luck!

u/kagzig · 6 pointsr/dogs

I'm sorry that happened to you and Brutus -- that's just terrible. I can't say I've experienced anything close to that, but I have had to deal with crate rest and recovery when my pup broke a toe. Obviously very very small potatoes, comparatively, but hopefully some of the crate rest advice may be helpful to you.

In our case, my pup was on the most restrictive possible crate rest, and also had to have a cone or similar on whenever she was unsupervised to prevent her from tearing off her cast. If you are in a similar situation, I recommend trying out a few cone alternatives -- like this or this -- so you can leave the cone off as much as possible. That way, Brutus will have his head and paws free and you can keep him occupied with Kongs, chews, and puzzle toys. Since physical exercise is out, mental exercise is absolutely critical, and the toys/Kongs are key, along with training. With a little creativity, you might be surprised at how much you can train while your dog is in stationary and even crated!

As for the driver, unfortunately the best I can offer is just to stay in touch with the officers who responded and, when applicable, the prosecuting attorney's office. Keep records and documentation for all your expenses related to recovery (including vet bills). In the event the driver is caught and charges are filed, this documentation could be very helpful to the prosecutor, and potentially even financial restitution through the same process, depending on your state's laws. Be sure to ask the prosecutor if there is a mechanism that allows for victims' restitution through the criminal process and if vet bills would qualify, and then keep following up on the restitution aspect to make sure it is part of the prosecutor's sentencing recommendation. This can obviously take a while (resolution will easily take months, and restitution, if any, would take even longer) and enforcement through this route still leaves something to be desired, especially if the offender is indigent, but it has helped a lot of people and at least saves the time, expense, and hassle of trying to pursue restitution civilly.

I hope the driver is found and convicted, and I wish you and Brutus the best as you recover.

We have flown with our cats internationally several times. In our experience they were pretty agitated in the airport but were fine once up in the air.

I assume you have a soft carrier so that it fits comfortably under the seat, yes?

Buy a bottle of these natural calming tablets as they seem to help: http://www.amazon.com/Ark-Lighting-10009-Happy-Traveler/dp/B0016H2G8U

And be sure to pick up food and water at least 12 hours before your flight...cats can go like 11 days without food/water so half a day won't hurt...you could even push it to 24 hours so he won't have the need to shit/piss in the plane...this is more uncomfortable for them than being a little hungry/thirsty. You can bring a washcloth and soak the edges to give him some water to lick now and then without filling his bladder.

Consider buying a harness for him because you'll have to take him out of the carrier at security...cats have a tendency to bolt when scared, even well trained ones who are with their owner, so it's best to have him in a harness at the airport so you can hold on to his leash when taking him out of the carrier at security.

All up it's pretty easy.

Some airports require that you get a quick check by the airport vet the day of, so check to see if this is the case...if so you need to arrive quite a bit earlier to get this done, or do it the day before.

angel eyes made my bichon and maltese very sick after a few weeks of use, but the pet store i used to work at sold the hell out of it. tear stains are a result of a ph imbalance, so chalk and peroxide will likely remove the stains, but won't cure the cause of them. be careful with grain free foods, bichons are prone to stones (i just finished paying off my dog's second cystotomy for a stone blockage) and the last thing you want is a grain free diet if your dog is at all predisposed to developing any sort of build up. our vet recommended boiled chicken and rice mixed in with a high quality food. it's worked well for keeping tyson's stains at bay. i've even noticed my maltese' eyes clearing up. as far as cleaning them, i use tropiclean Spa face wash, blueberry something or other. it smells great and it's tear free. good luck! http://www.amazon.com/Tropiclean-SPA-Pet-Facial-Scrub/dp/B001AWH582

u/LopsidedMidget · 1 pointr/parrots

No problem at all! I know the struggle, so I'm very happy to help if I'm able to. :) Four parrots is a handful! I can't even imagine your daily routine/cage cleaning days.. lol.. It's just intimidating!

So far as the plucker goes.. Well, we've got one of those CAGs, too! Have you ever heard of or tried avicalm and/or featheriffic? We've had our CAG on both of them since about September and while it's a slow process and we didn't see any immediate results over the first two or so months, he's finally allowing his neck feathers to grow back in! His plucking was a mental tick that developed because of his attachment to his previous owner (roommate that we adopted him from) leaving for about two months and returning out of the blue (so far as the parrot was concerned). So, if it's a mental thing or a habit these supplements combined might be a very worthwhile thing to try. I can't 100% guarantee success, but they, along with a healthy diet and a lot of love have really done wonders. :)

We give them one scoop of featheriffic in the morning and a scoop of the avicalm with each meal.

I've gotta give you the breakdown/warning that I got from my vet, though. He said that these homeopathic supplements are fine for the bird, but should they work they may only mask the underlying problem if it's a health concern. So, it's definitely something to bear in mind.

u/hobbitfeet · 2 pointsr/aww

Our cat was recently diagnosed with cancer and now is on 3-4 pills a day. I'm very practiced at pilling cats, so I could get them down her just by shoving them in her mouth, but I had to do it so many times a day that she was starting to shy away from me whenever I approached her, which was extremely sad and stressful for us both. She doesn't have long to live, and I want those to be good months with lots of quality time.

Pill pockets and hiding pills in food and similar approaches have never worked for her, so a month ago, I scoured the internet for ANY other options. I ultimately found this stuff called a "pill masker." It's like cat-food-flavored play-doh. You wrap it around the pill, and it's so sticky and such a tight fit that the cat can't get the stuff off and also doesn't really chew the pill before going down?

It has been AMAZING. Our cat eats 100% of her pills with enthusiasm now and zero coercion, and it's been a month without the bloom going off the rose. She's an unusually smart cat, so usually tricks like this work only super briefly and then she figures them out.

Anyway, I've become a pill masker evangelist. Told everybody I know with cats, plus the vet and the pharmacist. Yet to meet anyone who has ever heard of it. You should try it!

This is the kind we are using, chosen because there were only two brands on Amazon and this one was a few bucks cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FXX4DQK/ref=sxts_kp_lp_2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=8778bc68-27e7-403f-8460-de48b6e788fb&pd_rd_wg=SV0HU&pf_rd_r=Q510PWJ87T4B4E90XEKM&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B01FXX4DQK&pd_rd_w=2DNDs&pf_rd_i=pill+masker&pd_rd_r=35ed66a2-fe4d-42a5-ac41-aa24ec3cde3d&ie=UTF8&qid=1543367125&sr=2

u/vgr1 · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

As /u/sneaky_dragon was referencing..... Twice a day is much better as "Plasma drug levels decreased rapidly to near-undetectable levels by 24 h." Giving it once a day creates a large swing in pain relief. Rabbits metabolize Meloxicam much faster than cats or dogs.

There are many concentrations of Meloxicam. The most common are for cats 0.5 mg/mL and dogs 1.5 mg/mL. Base on the info you gave 2 mL once a day for a 2.6 lbs rabbit is 2.54 mg/kg using the dog version. This is way to high so guessing your vet is giving the cat version. This works out to 0.85 mg/kg and is an 'ok' amount. Many vets are afraid to dose high... yours looks like they aren't.

There are side effects from any med... with Meloxicam the main concerns are kidney, liver, and in some rarer cases bone issues. It's a tradeoff... 'quality of life' type of thing. I have known a few owners that have used 1.0 mg/kg+ doses on rabbits for 4+ years with no issues. Many vets will do a blood test every 6-12 months (depends on vet) to make sure things are fine for long term use.

There are other options that might help. Oxbow makes a joint supplement that some have had luck with. Bunspace sells a pellet that has glucosamine in it along with a few other things that might help. Make sure to ask your vet before changing anything.

I have flown with our two iggys, one 8lbs and the other 20lbs, multiple times both across the domestic USA and internationally (greater than 20hrs).

The little one has canine epilepsy so she rides with my wife and I in the cabin. We use the following carrier: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00063433G/

The airlines are more than likely not going to check the carrier for size or anything. I put my kindle and other stuff into a medium sized sherpa carrier as my carryon as well so that after takeoff she'd have more room to lay around. On the long flights, we even would surreptitiously put her on my wife's lap underneath a blanket. The flight attendants didn't seem to care but we kept it discreet.

Definitely do not give yours any sort of tranquilizer. We gave her an herbal medicine to help her keep calm (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016H2G8U/). We gave it about 30 minutes before arriving at the airport and it lasted a couple of hours. She wasn't drugged out or anything...just calm.

Lastly, remember to reserve your pet's spot on the plane ahead of time and BEFORE you buy your ticket. This means talking to someone on the phone or in person and confirming that you can have your dog in the cabin with you. Then, after purchasing your ticket, call and make sure that they attach that pet reservation to your confirmation number/ticket.

Travelling with pets is tough but I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have.

I fee your pain! Same thing happened to my 8 year old Bulldog just a few months ago. Our vet diagnosed the problem as allergies (just by looking at her symptoms, no tests).
I didn't bother doing the allergy test as the problem cleared up pretty quickly with the remedies below that I used. However it didn't, I would have done what others have suggested and gotten a test done to know for sure.
Dogs often develop food allergies (such as chicken) later in life so many owners don't suspect a food item they have been eating for years could be doing damage.
I also did not want to put my girl on medication unless it was my last resort so here is what I did and thankfully it worked wonders!

-coconut oil on skin and in food once a day
-cod liver oil in food once a week
-castor oil on skin

Other natural products a holistic vet recommended that you can google for more info are colloidal silver, neem oil and also lavender oil (just a few drops mixed in with the coconut oil when you apply it on the skin).

I also have been feeding her a raw diet for a few years now - when I first adopted her, her skin was horrible and she had ear infections every month. Switching to raw food improved her coat, stopped her ear infections and helped her overall health. I also only feed her natural treats every once and awhile, nothing packaged, such as apples, sweet potatoes and sardines.

Good luck and if you have any questions I'm happy to help!

Please try a [soft cone too] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0045Y1JG6/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_h3gXub0DC0SPN) It is far more comfortable, allows them to sleep better, and reach their food/water bowls.

When we first got our rescue, he was very insecure, and nervous. He licked and gnawed a spot on his foot until it was raw, and bleeding. But lots of love, reassurance, and Neosporin cured it.

However, as others have mentioned, it's probably impacted anal glands. Even groomers will empty them for you. It's a substance that has the consistency of old rubber cement, and smells like fish that has been left out in the sun a few days. Not pleasant.

Good luck! And please update!

I have a super fussy Smooth Collie when it comes to administering pills that he has to swallow. I tried Pill Pockets and they worked for a time until he realized he could chew the pill pocket and still spit out the pill. So I found this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FXX4DQK/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I wasn't confident that pill "putty" would work, but I've been using it for a bit over a month now and he takes all of his pills because he cannot unbind the pill from the putty.

I introduced him to this method by giving him some rolled up pill putty balls with a tiny bit of a regular treat inside them and then sometimes with nothing inside them. Once he was good with that, I started putting his pills inside the rolled up putty balls. I still give him an empty putty ball every other treat so that he has to "gamble" and take the putty anyway.

She is adorable!

We have 3 Chi's, so we invested in a soft cone (similar to http://www.amazon.com/Comfy-Cone-E-Collar-Medium-Black/dp/B000XY7C7C/). Great purchase; SO much better than the hard plastic ones.

Zelda will thank you.

There's a couple of spray/foam products available on Amazon that seem to work pretty well if you use them daily. You can also buy a doggie toothbrush that fits on your finger which is often easier than trying to shove a handled tooth brush in your dogs mouth.

If you're very confident, and careful, you can buy a tartar scraper to try and chip off any thick tartar built up.

u/luckeducke · 2 pointsr/parrots

Some birds will eat meat, but it is not a natural part of their diet. giving your bird fresh fruits and vegetables and switch him to a pellet based diet would be best. Pellets should have all the nutrients your bird needs. You can order pellets from amazon if there are no pet stores nearby.

My female rabbits didn't return to "normal" until basically a week passed, for a timeframe. I got THREE of them spayed at around the same times.

You can help your lovely friend along by putting down a soft small blanket or towel just for him in the cage. Lots of padding seemed to make my rabbits a little more comfortable.

Mine wanted to sleep instead of going for food... as a result, I had to syringe-feed them Critical Care recovery food every 2-3 hours to keep their strength up. I also had to syringe-feed a little water now and then.

So all in all, supervision, making sure they poop, scheduled medicine-feeding, scheduled food-feeding, and if needed water-feeding for the first 4 days for me. After this phase, they started having appetite again, but it came back very slowly.

I was advised to keep up the Critical Care regimen for like 2 weeks, gradually weaning them off it at the very end to prevent tummy upset.

Within 1.5 to 2 weeks they were more or less okay. I still had to make sure they didn't pull on their stitches though.

Your vet should have told you to use Critical Care recovery food though. I bought mine from either the vet, the Oxbow site, or Amazon using one day shipping or whatever. The reason is because when you prepare it with some water, it turns into this soft and mushy paste of veggies that you can put in their mouth. Full on actual veggies might not be so enticing until a couple more days pass.

As for the eye thing, I noticed my other male rabbit would actually cry a little when he was in pain. It's possible yours was doing this. You have to wipe his tears and dry the fur there. Otherwise, the salty tears will actually cause fur loss in that region.

Your bunbun just had surgery, pretty much. If you had to come back from the hospital, how long before you think you'll be back to normal? A few weeks? :)

You can definitely have anesthesia-free dental cleaning for dogs, the vet I take my dog to does them although it's not in Vancouver.

You should probably call some vets and ask them if they offer that - it might not be year-round because sometimes it's a specialist that travels between cities every few months that does it. Googling "Vancouver vet anesthesia free dental" led me to http://animalcareclinicvancouver.com/index.php , although I can't find the page on it. At worst, you should call them and see if/when they offer it, and if they don't then you can ask them if they know any other vet clinics that do, and if not keep calling other vets. Vancouver is about as large as the city I live in, so I would be very surprised if no options are available.

In the longer term, you can also brush his teeth yourself, although most dogs won't like it you might have to get him used to it for his own health. Link to dog toothbrush and toothpaste.

Also, why does he have a tendency to build up tartar? Is it because of his food or some other condition? Does he have enough chew toys? Chew toys are supposed to help keep a dog's teeth clean.

Best wishes for you and your dog.

Edit:
Adding this link I found after a bit more googling

What is she allergic to, if it’s a food allergy? You may be able to find her a food that’s not too rough on her that can still accommodate to her restrictions. Antibiotics and antihistamines definitely will mess with her system. I know there’s a once a month allergy shot available, I just don’t know if it would be something that could help her. My rescue had back to back UTIs when I first got her, hers due to the fact that she was terrified of going outside in the rain (we live in FL - you can’t get away from rain lol) so I give her this supplement one a day with dinner and she has not had a UTI in over a year. Good luck, she’s a beauty 😍

u/I_am_Bob · 3 pointsr/dogs

I know you are saying money is tight. but I really recommend buying a bottle of ear cleaner like this or similar. I have a lab with floppy ears and they get gunked up every once and a while. If I notice her shaking her head a bunch I put a drop or 3 in her ears and massage them for a bit. You can also take a cotton ball and gently stick it down in her ear and swab out any wax/gunk. If you leave it to long the gunk becomes a nice breeding ground for yeast and you'll need to get prescription drops from the vet. So in the long run the $15 for the cleaner is a lot cheaper than the vet visit and prescription drops.

I just got my first ferret not too long ago.

We use this solution for the dog, cat, and ferret and it works great.

As for litter, I’m very happy with the crushed walnut cat litter I’ve been using. I think it’s by Naturally Fresh. It really keeps odors down and clumps nicely. My only problem with it is that my ferret likes to dig in it.

u/tayway2 · 1 pointr/samoyeds

It's usually caused by bacteria and yeast, which also cause tear staining on smaller dogs. You can use various tear staining products to mitigate the issue. Eye Envy works fairly well. Also, you can use a shampoo like this one.

These may take some time to work, but they'll improve the appearance over time :)

u/mrk177 · 2 pointsr/dogs

We adopted her about a month ago. January 5th 2019 to be exact, it feels longer than that, I put two months in my original post but it was just a month ago. The Humane society didn't have record of when she was spayed they just assured me that she was. She was transferred from the city and didn't have a lot of information on her. The vet confirmed she was spayed and even showed me the incision. The vet recommended UTI prevention so I picked up some cranberry Antioxidant she has been taking them around the same time as the Omega 3 so about 3 weeks now.

I have been putting the omega 3 pills in hot dogs and pill pouches but I haven't been breaking the up. That might do the trick since she weeds out the pill with her tongue and spits it out, she eats either the hot dog or pill pouch. I am going to try breaking up the pill it will get around her method.

Thanks for taking time to respond it means a lot.

I find the finger brushes easiest to use. My girl won't chomp down on my finger, but she'll close down on any brushes. There's enzymatic paste you can buy.

My vet says daily is best, but at least a couple/few times per week is recommended. I'm honestly shit about it though. Her chewing on toys is what cleans her teeth most, by far.

u/Flinkle · 1 pointr/kratom

Do you have him on any joint supplements? My dog has arthritis in her neck, and I give her glucosamine treats that I order from Amazon. They work incredibly well. I also gave them to one of my cats (who is no longer with us) who had arthritis in his back end so painful that he didn't want to step into his litter box (which didn't have a very high lip on the front). Vet gave him a steroid shot and some NSAIDs, which didn't help at all. I was really concerned that I was going to have to have him euthanized, so I decided to try glucosamine. In five days, it not only rid him of all his pain, but he was also running around the apartment like he hadn't done in several years! The stuff is miraculous, in my opinion.

Definitely not knocking the kratom, but if you don't have him on glucosamine, you might give it a try. There are a ton of different ones, but I use these inexpensive ones, and they work just fine.

Kind of hard to argue the Golden w/ that coat. If you're really curious, you can try one of these DNA tests. They have some mixed reviews but I always thought it would be fun to try.

u/heronnow · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

In addition to glucosamine (Myristol pellets, or these), I'm giving mine:

  • 85ml pomegranate juice which is an anti-inflammatory (this might not be a good idea if your bun is on the plump side, I've tried giving mine crushed pomegranate seed, but he won't touch it).

  • 100mg (roughly) Omega 3 which is found in linseed/flaxseed/hempseed. I'm just using vegetarian omega 3 capsules for this.

He also gets a mixture with ginger, turmeric and sage, which are said to be good for joints, I doubt it, but it is cheap and he likes it.

My vet also mentioned Devil's claw (Harpagophytum), but I never got anywhere with that as I wasn't able to calculate a sensible dosage.

In my experience the dental chews function more are breath mints rather than cleaning the teeth. Their is special toothpaste for dogs because they don't know to spit out the toothpaste so it is important you don't use human toothpaste because the fluoride will upset their stomach. This is what I use http://www.amazon.com/Petrodex-Dental-Poultry-Toothpaste-Toothbrushes/dp/B0002AQASO/ref=pd_sim_petsupplies_22 and I also bought an additive for his water which did improve the smell. I usually brush my dogs teeth right before we go to bed because they say they shouldN'T drink or eat for 30 minutes before or after the brushing although I don't know why that is.

edit: also you only need to brush the outside of the teeth not the inside.

u/kinenchen · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

If your bunny likes Critical Care, I mix our old man bunns meds in with that. It smells AMAZING to bunnies (apparently) and he usually devours it. Otherwise, if it's in a small volume, I'll mush it in with some banana. Too much banana will make your bunn sick so be careful if you go that route.

u/Martaway · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

Sorry! Not Total care, its called "Critical Care"

I also found that if I mixed a bit of unsweetened applesauce into it, she would eat it on her own the majority of the time

Definitely check with the vet first if you plan to go the Critical care route, though

We're trying these with Leo right now: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0787TDTYL/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

He does NOT like the taste. We have to wrap them in lots of cheese and put them in with his food so he will scarf them down. The first morning after we used them, we noticed he seemed a bit more calm... but overall I feel like it's made about a 2% difference. He's a German Shepherd, kind of like /u/AZSouthsideGirl with her Bella, Leo is also an intense breed so I think its hard to really curb that.

But it can't hurt to try, they're not too expensive to try at least once.

My puppy had the exact same thing on his armpit at 10 weeks old. They look gross like acne and have scabs from the dried puss. Like the other poster said, I think it's puppy pyoderma which is common for young puppies, usually doesn't bother them, and it goes away on its own. I bought some otc pet topical that contains Chlorhexidine Gluconate and sprayed it liberally 2 times every day on the area. I could tell it was working. He is 6 months now and they're completely gone.
