🎓 Reddit experts on doorsteps
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where doorsteps are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
The common things I see most people regret not bringing initially:
The neighborhood watch is a really good idea. If ur able to talk with the people that live directly by you, next door, across the hall, and let them know what has happened, possibly exchange numbers so you have people right by you to call if u get spooked. Maybe some can even step outside their apartment when you get home from work and wait till you get inside.
Also there are many different products like this doorjam hopefully I did the link correctly 1st time I’ve done one but that might help you feel little more secure. This is just an example I haven’t researched them so don’t know which ones are most effective.
Weird situation. I would think if people wanted to break in or do something else they wouldn’t draw so much attention to themselves beforehand but who knows. Glad your husband got some time off to stay with you. Sorry u have to deal with this idiot. I hope it stops and things get better for you guys, be safe.
yay dachshund stuff! This is the iron door stopper I'm using. I just painted it in like 12 coats of paint to make it pretty and silvery. It would probably look really good in like a matte blue or orange too.
Also I just got these from a friend off my registry. So cute!!
Your'e gonna want some awesome new knives.
this to keep all your cords in place.
this so you don't have trouble plugging in all your stuff.
this can be used to keep track of all the tiny pieces (e.g. batteries, screws, etc.).
I personally use this everyday, it's the best.
these to keep you clean.
everyone needs one of these.
gotta put all the shoes somewhere.
something like this will come in handy.
It's the small details that count.
this could help when moving everything in.
And then get one of these bad boys for you!
okay I think I put enough for now, hope it helps.
I had this same issue a few years ago. We figured it came from the hallway and into the bottom of the door. They offered exterminators but they only did it once.
So my solution after trying everything out was as simple as placing glue traps EVERYWHERE. Gluetraps are safe, they don’t harm pets, no chemical warfare into your kitchen, and easy to dispose.
What you do is place them where you’ve seen some of them hanging out. Put some in the cabinets too. They particularly like being in spice cabinets or where there’s consistent moisture like under the sink or by the sink. I also layer them flat around the walls.
It’s also worth noting that when you get a few trapped, you need to keep em there for just a short while longer because it invites the others. Once the majority of the surface has been covered then fold them (if not) and step on it to kill them and dispose it
This set from amazon is a 75 bulk set. That should be enough.
Catchmaster 75M Bulk Mouse and Insect Glue Boards, 75-Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005IMZ9TC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vZwvDbDX9AZNE
You should also consider getting a draft stopper. This stops airflow from coming through the bottom of the door but it also helps keep the bugs out. This helps tremendously especially when you have a large gap between the door and the floor.

Once you’ve finally handle the situation, you should try chalking your floor. Look for colored chalk like brown or beige to match your floor. Amazon sells these cheap but you may be able to find them even cheaper at small hardware stores or even Home Depot.
I was able to get rid of every single one of the roaches in one month.
Good luck.
I am not sure if you are traveling in a single location or multiple areas for your work, but either way I would scout the area and locate various points of interest. Police, medical, fire, grocery/supply stores. Also educate yourself about possible natural risks such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados and flesh out a plan for what you would do in such an event. See if the hotel has a evacuation plan for emergencies and review it.
Do you have a door wedge security device for your hotel, it will increase your safety in the room and help prevent intrusion. Something like this
THIS CONTEST IS UPLIFTING.
AND SO IS AN ELEVATOR.
BUT IT ALSO GOES DOWN. SO THERE IS THAT.
THIS IS AN ITEM, LIKE 2 SETS WOULD BE AWESOME OR EVEN ONE. I'M NOT PICKY.
MY CAPS BUTTON IS BROKED.
BUT I AM EXCITED. SO IT'S OKAY.
I FORGOT THIS: I see trees of green and red roses too
I am so sorry that happened to you! Is there a way you can carry a small doorstop in your bag? If your employer won't or can't put a lock on a door, you could put up your sign on the outside and then put the doorstop on the inside to keep people out. I'm thinking something like this
Door Stop Rubber, BearMoo Flexible Door Stop Wedge 4-Pack - Smart Stackable Slip-Resistant Design - Door Stops Work Well on All Surfaces (White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071S3J37B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_lF.1AbDSN29B8
I hope you find a solution that fits, all the best vibes to you!
A total of 7 separate orders. It was a bit annoying because I was mostly on my phone and the mobile apps/chrome wouldn't load properly. Also I would have preferred to bundle orders but oh well. or try to use more coupons but they only give you so many minutes in the cart and sometimes the next item that you're waiting for a deal to start is right outside that window.
I used the Visa30 coupon for above.
Spoga Mop, Broom and Sports Equipment Organizer Wall Mount - $10
I missed out on the $50 gift card because I didn't have the physical credit card with me and it asked for the full card number. I also wanted this Anker BT Speaker but it went pretty fast and everytime the waitlist message popped up on my phone the app was too laggy and I couldn't get it in the cart. oh well.
edit: bargh! just realized i needed a smaller UPS of which there was a cyberpower one on sale. d0h!
That's a really interesting way of thinking about it. Thanks for the insight!
Do you think something like this would make much of a difference?
https://www.amazon.com/Door-Draft-Stopper-Performance-Soundproof/dp/B07DMSPWGS
The room is a bit drafty too, so 2 birds with one stone.
I'm sure a solid door would make a huge difference, but would prefer to try some cheaper options first.
Edit: maybe a foam one would work better?
Roger, thanks for the link.
I just received these last Friday, taking two and wedging it under my front wheel like a wheel chock has been working great.
These are simple but effective as deterrents, so long as she holds herself to install it each time they are in for the day/night. Depending on how much “modification” you can do to the apt, these are even better.
These devices are great. Have a couple and take with me when I stay at hotels.
Aluratek DoorJammer Portable Door Lock Brace for Home Security and Personal Protection Portable Security Device ADJ01F https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0799YJNL8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_o8zoDbAENPA1E
Also dont forget to add extra protection to your Windows.
Oh if they refuse the lock, a door stop/door wedge would work just fine. example 1 example 2
Also this item works where when the door opens a chime is let out. the two magnets line up and as long as they are side by side nothing happens but when they are separated it makes a sound. I have free 2nd day shipping at amazon if you need any of these to feel safe and epically if your parents refuse the lock.
You'd be better off staying in your dorm than venturing out in almost every situation. If I were you I'd get two or three of those collapsible 5 gallon water jugs (you can fill up form a showerhead or tub) and get at least two week's worth of dehydrated food or MREs. If you don't have a bathroom in your dorm room you should find some way to get rid of your urine/feces. A painters bucket from Home Depot with a top would do well, as long as you can dump it out your window if needed. I would stock up on baby wipes- more than you think you'd need- put those in the bucket. Get a crowbar and hammer so you can open up other rooms to forage if you need to- you can use pillow cases in the rooms to put things in. Get a can opener and a spoon. Get a baseball bat for defense- looks innocent enough on its own and won't raise hard to answer questions. Your dorm room has a solid door and you have all of your clothing and bedding there- so plan on bugging in and stay quiet. If you can afford it, get a [door jammer] (https://www.amazon.com/DoorJammer-Portable-Security-Device-Travel/dp/B00N95IVSQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1479072334&sr=1-3&keywords=door+security) to secure your door when you're in your room. Do not open your door to anyone or you risk losing what you have stocked up. Get duct tape and giant black lawn leaf bags so you can cover up windows if you have to. Have a small bag full of things to make [improvised alert system] (http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2014/09/05/detroit-fire-department-has-alert-system-made-of-pop-cans/77199950/) for your hallways.
All in all you could do all of this for under 200-300$ and it's all stuff that you can use when you get an apartment.
You want "pegs" I bought something like this and they work great. 10 Pcs 6 in 1 Cylinder Shaped Float Stop Rubber Stopper Bobber Sinker https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008X1BT1W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vgN5AbEVB9E9F
Flukemaster on YouTube has a video on how they work. I hope this doesn't violate subreddit rules.
The 2x4s would fit in an open or closed brackets, for easy removal when you want out - pics: https://www.amazon.com/Drop-Open-Security-Brackets-Boards/dp/B00H1BRXYM
Thanks for the discussion, I am going to read it now.
I built a cabinet for the noise isolation, since I work in the same room as my printer. I only print PLA, but it's definitely been worthwhile just in the noise reduction alone. Pics here: http://imgur.com/a/5ik2k
Parts:
Cabinet exhaust fan (not installed yet, but will be able to monitor the temp in the cabinet, and if it gets too high, the fan can kick on and start removing some of the hot air): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009CO543S
Shelf legs:

Relay box (rPi controls power to lights and printer via GPIO):

I can't seem to find the Stuva cabinet that I bought. They used to have two sizes - one that was shallow and one that was deep enough for the Maker Select. The latter is no longer on their site, but basically just go to Ikea and pick out a cabinet that will accommodate your printer. The rest is really just porcelain to make things a tad nicer for you.
Alarmed door stops might make her just walking into your place a lot more interesting.
If you've got a parking lot for your complex, do you also have security who can keep an eye on her or "help her leave" if you need it?
Did u tell landlord and demand locks to be changed? Add some manual locks. Like 5 in a row. Or buy this door barricade.
Or, consider putting a security camera outside your door.. This one is good too. And pretty inexpensive!
You can even get window alarm which may deter the thief. Or you can install something like this.
Safety first. Buy yourself a taser and bear mace. Keep a small pot full of sand, you can grab a handful and throw it in their eyes. Keep a baseball bat handy.
I have a flashlight that is extremely bright and will strobe to blind an intruder. It’s called Outlight tactical flashlight.
I’m trying to think of what else you can do.... plant something thorny under your windows if possible....
If you have a way of adding a screen door outside, get one or replace your current one with something storm and burglar resistant.

If anyone needs it, here is the doorstop that I hang down off the vertical wallmount to give the base station something to "lean" on without drooping. Three pack for 12 bucks - perfect for 2 base stations and 1 door :)

That’s frightening. I thought campuses were being much more proactive about the door guards and other ways of securing classroom doors from active shooters.
You could get something like this if they’re not going to do anything about security.
I just tried installing one of these last week. There just wasn't enough of a gap. I put the hinge protectors on, and the door had to be forced to close the last couple inches. With either the deadbolt or doorknob guard or the long frame plate installed, the door wouldn't even close. It's a metal door frame so I can't mortise anything. I took it all off and I just have to live with some extra-long screws.
And, it's not a great metal frame, and it's a pretty standard door. The metal frame probably helps some, but it's not heavy duty by any means.
So I'm going to just get a set of these and say FTW.
[This comment] (https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/6f8vq9/can_my_apartment_complex_take_videos_of_my_room/dih7x7v/), from a post yesterday addressed a similar issue:
>I'd put a chain up, and use it whenever you are home. If you can't do that (screw holes, etc.) there are security door stoppers or this device that stops maintenance people, even if they have a key.
This way at least you'll stop the surprise visits while you're at home. This creep was definitely hoping to catch you in the shower. Be careful.
Only thing I really need is this doorstop. Currently using a large plastic trash can to prop the door open so the air can move through the window and out. Trash can looks like it's about to break too. Thanks for the contest!
Oh, no! Not anxiety?
Sadly, your anxiety is not a particularly relevant factor. The landlord generally has the right to do things like place lock boxes, which are a standard practice for realtors.
If it will help your anxiety, perhaps can invest in https://www.amazon.com/DoorJammer-Portable-Security-Personal-Protection/dp/B00N95IVSQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=DBZ8MUT2B9P6&keywords=door+jammer+portable+door+security+device&qid=1556402640&s=gateway&sprefix=doir+jammer&sr=8-3
This lets you secure your door from inside while you’re home, even in the face of a person armed with a key. You could then answer the door and confirm that it’s a real estate agent and not a ne’er-do-well.
But you have to let the agent in.
I’m a fan of some sort of doorstop too. They even make products like this that you can even take when you travel!
I've had good luck with these rubber door stops as a 'stand' for my CST. They are stackable as well so you can fine tune your angle. I use a 4 pack for my CST (2x stacked side by side). I don't have a close-up pic as it's at my office but here is a pic of my overall setup.

There's only one solution to this problem.
Helicopter.
Or something like this: https://www.amazon.com/DoorJammer-Portable-Security-Personal-Protection/dp/B00N95IVSQ
Tomorrow, go down to your home improvement store and get an Angel lock. If that doesn't fit your door, look for a floor lock.
Keep your phone charged and keep it with you. Look up how long average police response times are in your neighborhood, and make plans accordingly.
Stay safe.
You can also install a door security bar. It's like an oversized deadbolt. Here's one example, but you can find a bunch of different types on Amazon. Here's one that's just a wall mount and you use your own 2x4.
Being polite and responding to a casual greeting like 'How are you?' is FAR from an invitation for him to start aggressively hitting on you (or soliciting you for prositution), especially when you have already rejected him quite blatantly on many other occasions. Don't be afraid to be more direct with him, firmly tell him in no uncertain terms that you are not and will never be interested in him. Is there any way for you to get out of there and into a different place? If not, maybe you can talk to your landlord about having him removed? Regardless, you should invest in some kind of door lock ASAP- they are fairly easy to install yourself. This could be another good option.
If you look on amazon there are locks made to secure hotel room doors against thieves / intruders. They might be a good option.
Example: https://www.amazon.com/DoorJammer-Portable-Security-Personal-Protection/dp/B00N95IVSQ/
Product link here. Looks like you can get them for about $25 on Amazon.
Also you can get a product like a Door Jammer that essentially adds a lock to a door.
Jumping on this comment for a promo. I have this one and I recommend it. Got it bc we travel and I didn't want housekeeping coming in during baby's nap time or while I was BFing.

After you replace the door with a metal security door, get a set of these with a 2x4
Something like these work well for that.
How many shill accounts does this site have?
It's 10 bucks cheaper on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Fantom-Magnetic-Hidden-Door-Stop/dp/B01MUX6SL4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1542751598&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=fantom+door+stop
Until you can get the locks changed and install a deadbolt, get yourself one of these door jammers pronto. You only use it when you're inside, so it doesn't violate any landlord right to entry (since you can let them in when you're home.)
You might also want to get a cheap nanny cam and aim it at the door for when you're not home, so you'll know if anyone is entering when you're not home.
That's truly awful- get one of those tourist doorstops that you can put on the inside of the door. Those can't be picked.
Fuck 'not allowed'!

Ramadan is from May 5th until June 4th this year per Google.
Add a door brace or door stops for when you are in your room.
Is getting a hotel or airbnb for a couple of nights a week an option?
You could get this- two of them. you could have it installed in less than 4 minutes.
http://www.amazon.com/Drop-Open-Security-Brackets-Boards/dp/B00H1BRXYM
You can get a door jammer to use when you're home. You can simply not answer the door and the landlord will not be able to enter. It's removable and requires no alteration to the apartment. If you're (rightfully) concerned able people being in your apartment when you're not there it may be worth the investment to get a couple cheap cameras.
Get one of these door wedges then it can't easily be opened even if unlocked.
8 bucks; problem solved.
This is going to sound like a really weird recommendation, but my roommate works midnights sometimes and it really weirds me out to sleep in my apartment alone. We have a security system, but I also bought these. If you wedge them under an interior door that opens inward, it's REALLY hard to open it. You'd basically have to break the entire door. It's a small thing, but it makes me feel more safe when I have nights alone.
Fantom Magnetic Door Stop
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUX6SL4/
Something like this may help give you piece of mind, it braces the door and makes it impossible to open without breaking in (no install required):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00N95IVSQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3/131-9636531-7480519?ie=UTF8&qid=1523639322&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Floor+Door+Lock&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2BC74ocfzL&ref=plSrch
Fuck that creep, sorry that happened to you.
Got a 2 pair of door bar brackets from some small outfit. They are NOT the bitch shit most places push out of some machine. Dude uses thick steel and excellent welds. Each door bracket uses 8 lag bolts to adhere to King/Jack stud besides doors. I am a land lord and would only want my tenants to tell me first so I can make sure they install correctly. None have but I'd ask first.
PM for site because a ton of people get all hot and bothered when you link something. IDK something something spam...
At this point it's unlikely that the legal system has a lot to offer you. It's a fairly blunt instrument, and most legal protections kick in after the fact, not pre-emptively. Even a restraining order would generally require a pre-existing pattern of harassment or violence, which isn't evident from your post.
You're doing the right thing by prioritizing getting out of this situation. In the interim, it might be worth keeping your phone charged and on your person whenever you're at home, and locking the door when you use the bathroom. If you want something a little stiffer than a bathroom privacy lock, removable door braces exist, but they're ultimately only as strong as the door itself.
Depending on how comfortable you feel with this, you may also want to sit your roommate down and spell out, clearly, that your sexual relationship is over, that he is no longer to touch you for any reason, and that you will treat continued unwanted touching as sexual assault. That's very confrontational, and you can expect your roommate to be angry… but enforcing this boundary is important to you and to your safety, and his anger is his problem.
He cannot legally lock you out over this. If you aren't on the lease, he can give you notice to terminate your tenancy, but that gives you a full month to find another place to live.
Just buy some variation of this:
https://www.amazon.com/DoorJammer-Portable-Security-Personal-Protection/dp/B00N95IVSQ
This will fix the problem while you are at home at least. If they say they want to come in, say there was no notice.
So this absolute toenail of a woman has violated yours and SO's boundaries multiple times? She's been told a dozen time to cut that shit out and hasn't?
Get a lock for your door.
Can't do any damage to your door or frame of the door with screws because it's a rental or you're staying temporarily?
I got you.
Doorjammer. Easy operation, slide and adjust.
Addalock. Installs quickly, no tools needed, and easier to hide in case someone for whatever reason throws a fit about the door being locked.
Also, something else.
Door Stop Alarm. It doesn't lock the door, but it lets out a hell of a noise when it's tripped. Wanna embarass this toenail or just feel like being a bit petty? Boom, noisemaker.
No one is allowed into your room without permission. It is yours and SO's space, not for anyone else to invade. She is stomping your boundaries, and has not listened after being told to cut it out.
Is there an off chance that this woman is experiencing dementia? It might explain [but not excuse!] why this keeps happening.
No posters, I’m pretty sure you’re going to get worse harassment if you retaliate sadly.
I would get a dead bolt, security system, and a door stopper or jammer . I’m neurotic and would probably get an additional deadbolt and jammer for my bedroom door just in case the above fail.
