Omg those colors are terrible. I'm so sorry!

You're renting right? Have you ever painted anything before? First things first, ask the landlord if he'll supply the paint if you supply the labor. It can't hurt! But you'd need to do a decent job sooo...

I'd go with a cool white in the kitchen. They make special super smooth durable paint for cupboards, but it's pricy! It finishes more like an enamel. Try to find out what kind of paint was used previously. You may need a primer and if you aren't sure, definitely get primer. Just do everything white, and research how to paint cupboards. 90% of a good paint job is prep work! Things like sanding, removing hardware, priming, taking cupboards doors down, etc. I wouldn't waste time on the insides unless you're really anal about stuff. I always bought the rubbery liners for mine.

If the landlord allows, I'd add hardware to the cupboards as well. These are a decent clean look:

Cosmas 305-030SN Satin Nickel Cabinet Hardware Euro Style Bar Handle Pull - 3" Hole Centers, 5-3/8" Overall Length - 25 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D0KWBJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_j3RDzbD9DSWFH

But measure to see what makes sense. Drill and sand the holes before painting and look to see if there were pre-existing pulls. If so, try to re-use those old holes (sometimes they are patched and painted over). Path of least resistance and so forth...

The kitchen looks small with no natural light so I think the under cabinet LED strips are a great idea. Something like this might work - I would go with warm lighting just so the white isn't so stark.

Albrillo LED Under Cabinet Lighting Dimmable Warm White, 12W 900 Lumens, 3 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ARQY31S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_X7RDzb9EGZ4KM

For the living area just get rid of that ugly neon vomit color as fast as possible. Dear god. Do not leave any of that.

I would aim for something in a very light warm gray (I know it's not the most revolutionary but it works) for the walls or if you want to go modern, a nice crisp white. You can always add warmth and color with textiles (furniture, rugs, curtains) so don't be afraid of doing a fresh box in white if you want the light. Use a matte or eggshell finish in the living room. Anything with gloss will highlight EVERY imperfection in the walls.

If your living room windows are subject to passerby's views, I'd consider getting a double rod for curtains. A softly textured sheer curtain will allow lots of light in the daytime while still obscuring you from unwanted attention. Something like this:
Best Dreamcity Faux Linen Sheer White Curtains / Draperies for Bedroom (Pack of 2 Panels, W52" by L84", White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F03O5SO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rbSDzb6SMDNRP

You can then choose a thicker curtain for the outer rod for evening privacy. (Sheers tend to be much more sheer at night when lights are on inside.)

Since it's a basement apartment, if the ceilings are low, you can trick the eye into seeing the ceilings as higher if you hang the rod closer to the ceiling but it looks like you have standard height ceilings so I think a standard 84" long curtain length would work out fine.

As far as furniture goes, it's so subjective, but the setup in the pic looks good! I would stay with neutrals, personally, and add color through throw blankets or toss pillows and artwork and accent pieces (be they plants or statuary or what have you). I'm still a big fan of grey. It's a one bed so I'd consider a sleeper sofa. They've come a long way and you don't have to get something that looks like it lived at your grandmas. Something along these lines would work well, I think. (The added storage is a nice bonus too.)

Poundex F6931 Bobkona Jassi Linen-Like Sectional with Pull-Out Bed and Compartment, Blue Grey https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CAJSC1W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_chSDzbBPEP4EG

I'd add some large area rugs. Definitely some artwork. Society6.com is a good place to find interesting art on a budget.

Add some simple mirrors on the walls as well - ideally one large one on the wall opposite the windows to reflect light back through the apartment. It would make a world of difference for you. I'm kinda pushing you in the clean and modern direction so I'd recommend something like this:

Raphael Rozen - Elegant - Modern - Classic - Vintage - Rustic - Hanging Framed Wall Mounted Mirror, Distressed Wood Finish, Gray - White Color https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G2FVBOA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kmSDzbASV1EQ2

It could add some warmth and texture to what might otherwise be a bland wall. Adding some floating shelves below or to the sides with some favorite books or mementos might be nice as well.

Definitely add some floor lamps and perhaps a side table lamp or two as well. Lighting is so much more important than people give it credit for. Always buy soft white. I actually really like Edison bulbs inside of lamps because they are a soft and soothing lighting, even when covered by lamp shades. They make a nice point of interest too. I always buy lamps with 3-way switches also. You'll never realize how awesome it is until you have it and then you'll use it constantly. (Won't work with the Edison bulbs though - you'll have to buy the dimmable lightbulbs). If you want the Edison bulb look to be a part of the decor, these lamps are pretty fun and work well for date night lighting, chilling on the couch eating snacks and watching Netflix lighting etc.

Injuicy Lighting Loft Retro Industrial E27 Edison Bulb Wooden Base Table Lights Vintage Antique Wood Desk Lamp for Bedside Bedroom Living Dining Room Home Corridor with Switch(Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FYRD37U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_HrSDzb4CXRZ75

If you're buying area rugs - get them larger. You want to define a space with it - not have a bath mat between your couch and your coffee table.

Get a coffee table with storage. Having a place for all your stuff is key to keeping things looking nice and uncluttered. I love having lots of blankets around because I tend to hunker down in winter but if you're really minimalist you could get away with not having storage.

If you don't have a coat closet and you don't have a large entry for a standard coat hook wall hanging try one of these for the things you use every day:

JustNile Versatile Metal 180 Degree Triple Pronged Swivel Swing Arm Wall Mounted Hook, Set of 2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5C5CSW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OvSDzbBWNGVNK

And that's where I'm gonna stop because I do have to work tomorrow.

One caveat - I did push for a more modern look BUT all of this advice would work if you like a more traditional style too. Key points being lots of neutrals and don't get too crazy with accent colors. Match your finishes on metals as much as possible and just try to keep things within the same finish family.

One of the huge problems this place has right now is a warm matte grayish violet as the kitchen accent and a an oddly cool yellow green semi gloss on the walls. Just choose warm or cool (I like warm, personally, especially for places with light walls) and stick to it. If you try to keep things cohesive you'll generally end up happy with the result!

Good luck! Post your afters for us!

I couldn’t find if you mentioned what your budget was, but assuming north of $2,000 if replacing sofa, tv cabinet, and coffee table. I’ve included links to some of my favorite pieces below that are very reasonably priced - I think these are on the lower end of the price spectrum for decent quality.

Layout:

In a smaller, less formal living room, I actually don’t mind a tv above the fireplace because it usually lends to a better seating arrangement. That said, since you’ve mentioned you don’t want your tv above the mantle, I’ll offer an alternative:

  • three person sofa in front of window

  • leave TV where it is, mount on wall above new console.

  • I think two upholstered swivel chairs would look good - one to the right of the sofa and one to the right of the console. By flanking the mantle on the far side of the room you’ll add some dimension/definition to the space and highlight the fireplace as a focal point.

  • Alternatively, I think a swivel or upholstered chair on either side of the tv console would look good, but the aforementioned layout lends to better tv viewing.

  • I would add a large rectangular coffee table directly in front of the sofa aligned to the middle of the fireplace.

  • the built ins are a good idea, but a pair of etageres (open bookshelves) may be far more cost effective and will achieve a similar look.

    Colors/Fabrics:

I’m making some broad assumptions based on your statements and choice of Sea Salt as your wall color, so I apologize if this isn’t what you’re looking for.

  • Sofa: I would stick to a neutral for your sofa. This will be your biggest purchase and you want something that will go with different schemes down the road if you decide you want to mix it up. I love a creamy linen or cotton fabric.

    Rhoden Sofa
    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/breakwater-bay-rhoden-sofa-w001205908.html

  • Chairs; I’m partial to neutral cream color scheme for all my furniture because it gives you more flexibility to add colors with accents, but if you feel inclined, your accent chairs are a good place to add color/texture. I would get two that match each other (but not the couch).

    Sabine Swivel Armchair
    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/bernhardt-sabine-swivel-armchair-bht4869.html

    Lucas Swivel Armchair
    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/rosecliff-heights-lucas-swivel-armchair-w000229739.html

  • Rug: something neutral, like a sisal or jute, will add texture but not too much distraction. If you really want a pattern, I would scour eBay for an Oushak that has muted tones that mimic the other colors you want in the space. I would go with as large of a size as your room allows (minimum 9x12, 10x14 if your space wlll allow), such that you have about 12” between the rug and the wall.

Curtains: unless they’re custom made, I think patterned/colorful curtains are more often than not the #1 that gives a home goods or target purchase away. I would stick to a neutral. I have the amazon ones linked below in oyster - they have weighted bottoms and look just as high quality as anything at PB or RH. Also - I would get a more substantial rod in black or weathered wood. Target has a great knockoff that looks like wood but is actually metal for $20-$30. Get 96” curtains and hang them about an inch below your moulding/ceiling.

    BOCH-LN1855-96 Faux Linen Blackout Curtain, Oyster, 50 x 96 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078JLSG5V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-.oDCb7QH6VSB

Pillows: this is where you should add your color. Instead of going to home goods or target, shop around on Etsy for custom made. PetajaFiberWorks has done some great work for me and I love their fabric selection. Very reasonably priced too. They’re around the same price as big box stores and you can get much higher quality fabrics/patterns. I think a blue or sea foam scheme would look great and would bring out the sea salt in the walls.

    https://etsy.me/1ASCzsL

    Other:

TV Console: I love a weathered, light wood finish, I would find something that looks more like a dresser or a buffet - just be mindful that you have adeuqtE space for your TV equipment.

    Drummond 4 Drawer Sideboard
    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/rosecliff-heights-drummond-4-drawer-sideboard-rclf2854.html

End Tables: I think two round end tables would balance the squareness of the room/sofa. Again, I like a like weathered wood finish, but your call.

Mantle/art: A big rectangular or round mirror would look great above the fireplace. You could leave the mantle bare or put some matching vases with greenery on either side to add height/flank the mirror.

Lamps: I think a creamy, ivory colored ceramic lamp with white or natural linen shades would look great here. Or perhaps a blue and white chinoiserie lamp.

So my friend and I are moving into our first apartment together and my first apartment outside of college EVER! It's super exciting but also nerve wracking! We found an awesome temporary space. The only issue is that my friends room and my room would share a wall with a door in between. I wouldn't use this door to go in and out of the apartment rooms because it'll cross through my friends room and also because I have my own separate door into the hallway I can use. My friends room technically has 3 doorways but two don't have actual doors in them. She doesn't mind because she'll just put curtains in.

I, on the other hand, do mind that although my room is fully enclosed by two doors, the one that is shared with my friends room has gaps in it and doesn't touch the floor totally. I get anxious thinking about sound pouring through which I know will happen regardless because the walls are thin. Also because I have a boyfriend and my friend is 100% okay with him spending time and we're not going to awkwardly fuck while she's in the other room if we can help it but I do like talking to him into the night and I just want to be a respectful roomate.

How can I close the gaps in the door and sound proof it more. Right now my thoughts are to put towels into the gaps, maybe a sound proofing curtain like the one in the link below and I could also put a tiny dresser in front of the door to just block it more?

https://www.amazon.com/NICETOWN-Blackout-Curtains-Panels-Bedroom/dp/B015SJ7RYY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1518754246&sr=8-2

Again, I don't need this door because I have my own separate door that lead into the hallway and not to my friends room directly. I hope this makes sense!

We are subletting this place and my guy is cool with us putting doors in for my friends room but I obviously felt weird asking if I could replace his door. That's way to over the top. Any other ideas on what I can do?

Here's a pic of the door:

https://imgur.com/7tmM4wn

Sorry for the shit picture but essentially the pic of of my friends room and that red door leads to my room as well. Again I won't use it because there is a separate door in my room that leads to the main hallway. You can just see those gaps though and I tested out the noise and you can easily hear what one another is doing. Thoughts? Apologies in advance if this is confusing.

I love the left side of the room. The right side all looks like it came from grandmas guest room. Which it potentially all did... as did my entire first college bedroom, but it's be easy to liven that up and make it yours. You have a pretty cool minimalist, tech vibe going with that desk, lamp and chair. Keeping the other side of the room more simple will let more exciting things be the center of attention.

With the bedspread, a solid light gray is always safe- you could throw that cool blanket on top in the winter too. It lets you get some bright pillows to add color if you want. With the lamp, a cheap way to go would just to get a more simple lamp shade. Something Light gray or white with some texture would be a start.

After that, some blackout curtains and a long curtain rod would be awesome. I imagine it really opening up the feel of the room.

Now plants, it's crazy how much it really livens up a room. If light is low, give this article a read. You'll find something at Home Depot or Lowes that you can take care of. Put some smaller ones on one or two cheap shelves with what ever other cool nicknacks you start gathering at school and it'll feel like a castle man.

I see a lot of stuff about wall decor on here. Get a poster or two if you want, maybe a mirror. Old maps are cool too. Find an old map of whatever town you're in or from. Maybe a cool (quite) wall clock, but don't go crazy; college dorms can start feeling like dungeons when the walls get too crowded.

We don't have curtains ANYWHERE in our house. I don't know why it didn't occur to me until recently to even just put a note that says "Curtains" on my "Household" wishlist, but this contest reminded me to actually go find some to add to the wishlist. So I found these. At the very least, one set would be nice to have for the bedroom, and that would improve our quality of life DRASTICALLY, as it would allow my husband and I to get sleep through the night and not wake up to early, or to wake up when, say, our neighbor comes home late at night and his porch light comes on, which shines DIRECTLY into our window. It always wakes me up, and while my husband says it doesn't wake him up, he always shifts around when it does, so I know it at least bothers him, even if he doesn't wake up fully. A solid night's sleep that is easily fixed just by the addition of curtains would be such a blessing.

As for you, I saw you had a certain cologne on your wishlist, so I thought maybe you could use this, because clearly it will improve your quality of life. If you already have that, then I will say that this small item has definitely improved MY quality of life. :)

Yay for tax day! More yay for it being over! :-D

u/carissalf · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Congratulations, how exciting to live on your own!

I would recommend black out curtains, unless you don't have a problem sleeping with light. I just bought some myself as they're multi-purpose.

  1. They keep the sun out....seriously like 98% of it. Which is nice if it's hot or you're trying to sleep.

  2. They help increase energy efficiency by keeping the cold air out.

I have a ton of other ideas as to things you should have, if you're interested!

    Thanks for the contest!

    you're a big girl now!
u/kilamumster · 8 pointsr/Frugal

Those halogen lamps must be super hot and eating up energy. Can they be swapped out for fixtures that can use LEDs or at least CFLs? Habitat ReStore probably has tones of boob lights, I'm trying to figure out if we can stand to leave them open (remove glass shade) to use LEDs. Ugly but efficient. I can always put them back on if we have houseguests.

Check the energy usage of your water heater and refrig, maybe your oven. Compare to current energy-efficient models. I'd be surprised if your refrig, at least, isn't worth replacing.

As /u/mrbigshot says, check the water heater. Insulate it (water heater blanket) and the hot water pipe going out (black split-foam insulation). Draining and flushing build-up can help. Build-up is like gravel insulating the heating coil, which causes it to overwork ($) and in time will damage it ($$). Be sure to check for rust, corrosion, and leaks-- 20 years is an old water heater and a leak can be catastrophic.

Our home energy inspector mentioned that newer furnaces are much more energy efficient. 20 years old for all of that sounds like a big investment is inevitable... check with your power company for rebates.

Those windows sound amazing. Hate to block the view, but I'd try thermal blocking curtains. We used them in the tropics and they drop the temp a few degrees immediately. If you buy from WalMart, you can probably try them and return them if they don't work for you.

You can also make your own: DIY version. Be careful on insulated windows, if it traps heat in the window, it can damage the seal. In the winter, reversing (shiny-side in) them may help retain warmth in the house.

If you have wind and sliders, can you cool and ventilate naturally instead of using AC? I'm thinking of growing corn or tomatoes next year on the south side of our new home, not so much for the food, just want some fast shade!

u/octobereighth · 4 pointsr/legaladvice

I live in a HOA that has a rule that only "white-backed curtains" may be visible in a window. I also have a fucking floodlight pointing directly into my bedroom window.

It took trying out several different brands, but we were eventually able to find curtains that block almost all of the light. It'll never be pitch black in that room, but it's much better now than before. They also make light-blocking curtains that have thermal insulation. Sleep like the dead has a list of their top picks. I'm pretty sure these are the ones we ended up with in the end, but again we tried out a bunch of different ones so I could be wrong.

Good luck!

u/LinkslnPunctuation · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Honestly, I got some on craigslist for $20. I just emailed and made sure the previous owners didn't smoke or have pets.

Try to get something like this curtain I found on Amazon. It has reinforced grommets for easy and durable sliding and it looks thick. "Blackout" means it's woven densely enough to block sunlight out, which means it should be "heavy" enough to absorb sound. That silence you get when you put your ear up to the panelling you have should be replicated if you put your ear up to the curtains.

If you happen to find lots of thinner curtains for cheap, just layer them.

Velvet curtains would be ideal but you're an audiophile in college. You probably already sold a kidney for the setup you currently have. Buy the curtains on craigslist, buy this $10 pole (make sure the grommets on the curtains are big enough for the pole, though they should be), and whatever mounting hardware you and the homeowner can agree on.

I can't promise that this will fix everything but a treated room allows for much easier adjustments and better critical listening.

I’m on break from my night shift job right now so I’ll share some quick ideas!

A lot of folks here have recommended melatonin as a natural sleep aid. I take 6 mg, it takes about half an hour to kick in. It helps me fall asleep but doesn’t necessarily help me stay asleep. Some people have bad reactions to it (grogginess, weird dreams) so be aware of that.

In terms of sleep quality, blackout curtains are a necessity. You could also try these panels that velcro around the window frame to stop light peeking through the edges. A white noise machine can help filter out annoying daytime sounds; I just use a free app on my phone.

As for the gym, do you get a scheduled break/lunch hour at your job? Maybe you could look into 24 hour gyms that might better fit your schedule? That wasn’t a possibility for me, and eventually I just accepted I wasn’t going to make it to the gym on days I had to work. I started looking into workouts I could complete at home — some bodyweight fitness, a lot of kettlebells (which I still love). Eventually I went all in and started piecing together a home gym, though I get this isn’t an option for everyone.

Hang in there!

I use blackout curtains in addition to my wooden blinds. They block out more light and heat (when closed of course), help with energy bills, and still come in a variety of patterns/colors (depending on where you get them). They run more pricy than regular curtains but they're definitely worth it to me. They are a bit heavier, too, so make sure you use the rod recommended on the box. I've gotten them at Walmart, but here's an Amazon page to check them out. I have navy ones but I don't think colors matter as long as they have the special backing on them for the heat.

u/orange-blossom · 2 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

Ditch that dark corner shelf and get some nice over-toilet storage (one | two) that you can organize with baskets, bins, folded towels, etc. Weed out any bath products you're not using.

Replace the curtains with something more modern and light (one | two)! You could even just put some privacy film over the window so you don't lose any light. Add a hanging plant or lantern (to warm up the lighting) to the corner above the toilet, and a tall laundry basket or wastebasket next to the sink.

As others have mentioned, a rug is a great idea - they also make ones that fit around toilets (one | two).

u/incompetentdesigner · 2 pointsr/malelivingspace

Came in to say this. I've been looking for thick blackout curtains on a small budget lately and the best I've been able to come up with are liners like the ones above. You can find them on Amazon as well. It's even better than having a black/dark curtain because it will absorb even less heat from the sun as white will bounce back a LOT of IR light.

Edit: There are also curtain rods that come with two rails, to hang sheer curtains between the window and the thicker curtains. You can use that to have two sets. White curtains and the whatever other color you want.

u/derrick81787 · 3 pointsr/preppers

There's propane and/or kerosene heaters. Just be sure to crack a nearby window just in case.

Warm clothes, blankets, and sleeping bags will do alright. It would have to be very cold for a long time before you were really in danger of freezing.

Lighting a few candles in a small bedroom will keep you warmer than you would think.

If you are asking then I'm assuming that you probably don't have one of these, but a wood stove is great. If all you have is a fireplace, it will heat the area directly in front of it but not much more. Just hang out in front of the fireplace for a few days.

No matter what you do, you want to cover up the doors and windows with a heavy blanket or curtain or something. In fact, in general it is good to have some thermal curtains like these (many different brands out there) on all your windows. We added some this year, and it has made a huge difference in our gas bill.

u/jaimystery · 1 pointr/DIY

A cheap solution:

Buy six Command hooks - the sturdier variety. Buy a thicker dowel rod and either sand or paint it to make it smooth. Buy tab top black out panel.

Use a level and put three hooks on either side of the door close together but you want to put 1 up - 1 down - 1 up. You'll probably have to finagle putting on the curtain with threading it on the hooks. (The 2 up 1 down hook assembly should help keep your dowel in place as you move the curtain).

It would actually be easier if you used two panels (or take 1 longer panel and split it - a cheaper option).

Another solution would be buying foam core (comes in 4x8ft panels about $15), cutting it to size and just sliding it back and forth. If you want fancy it up - get a cheap twin size duvet cover & use as envelope for the foam.

I got these from another recommendation either here or AVSForums and couldn’t be happier. Previously had some from Target and these blew them away. I have a double window close to my screen and these block pretty much all light. Not showing on sale on the exact listing I previously purchased on, but sure you could find them through another search.

I think the trouble is whites/creams aren't as inherently light blocking as darker colors so they're not as popular as blackout, more popular as sheers / voile.

Try searching also for "offwhite", "ivory" and "ecru" and just pay attention to reviews mentioning how the color looks IRL

"Offwhite": http://www.amazon.com/Exclusive-Home-Thermal-Grommet-Off-white/dp/B00G24T1WQ/

"Ivory": http://www.amazon.com/Siena-Home-Fashions-Blackout-Curtain/dp/B00LXGUFGY/

FWIW I have these in beige, but they're a true beige not a cream. They block light pretty well. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Home-Fashion-Insulated-Blackout/dp/B003S6O7A2

GET. BLACKOUT. CURTAINS.

Don't delay. The second you have money get those damn things. If you have to skip a meal to afford them. Do it. I spent the first two weeks of my job without them and was miserable. I would go to bed late and wake up throughout the day non damn stop. The first day I hung them up and slept, I felt so refreshed. They are worth every penny. Get these and a rod to hang them up. Then tape them to the sides so no light can slip through. After that get yourself an alarm to wake you up. Your eyes rely on light to fully wake you. So either get a smart lightbulb that turns on when you wake up or get a lamp that you can turn on easily.

You get off at 6 which is perfect. Go to sleep right when you get home and shoot to wake up at 4 pm. This gives you ample time to run errands and be there for your partner of they work day shift. On your off days you don't have to follow your sleep schedule strictly but find hobbies you can do that won't wake everyone up while also keeping you awake for a good bit of the night.

The biggest hurdle for you is going to be morning activities. Early appointments or social gatherings will be rough. But take power naps when you can and invest in energy drinks or coffee if you are going to be up for a while.

Night shift is great but you need to make adjustments. When it comes to the dating scene, he open and honest about your work schedule. Depending on your area, you might not have to worry too much but that all depends.

Last but not least, if you start a family get off night shift. This shift is not designed for families. I have seen and heard stories about guys on this shift destroying their marriage/getting distant with their kids because they were too stubborn to admit this shift isn't designed for the family man. If you are worried about a paycut talk with your supervisor. At my work you just lose your shift premium but can still keep your seniority. It could be different. But docking your pay to keep your family is worth it in my opinion.

Thermal insulated blackout curtains are amazing. They make a huge difference. Available from amazon with free next day delivery. Those come in a bunch of sizes and colors. And they work! No light gets through and the heat is noticeably less with them closed.

u/MD113 · 1 pointr/nursing

My best advice for working nights is to get black out curtains for your bedroom. Amazon has some good affordable ones (I have these in dark grey and they work wonderfully). I always stay up until at least 4am on my nights off, and I used melatonin for the first few months of transitioning. If you're able to work your nights in 3 day blocks, do it. I am not always able to do that, and I survive.

u/wytl · 8 pointsr/houseplants

Yes, Bay area! Good guess.

Sheer curtains can be yours for only $15 on Amazon! 😛 I had to get them because it was too much sun and it was burning all my plants.

u/meat_tunnel · 1 pointr/January2018Bumpers

I just bought some for my own bedroom, these specifically: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CS31NDE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and have IKEA roller shades: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90349251/

OMG. It's 7pm and the sun is beaming directly in to my master bedroom but the room is pitch black with both of these closed. It's glorious. I hung the curtains and immediately took a nap in broad daylight.

Totally. I got [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Blackout-EZ-Sunlight-Blocking-Customizable/dp/B006S9WI20/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=blackout+ez+window+cover+velcro&qid=1569209401&s=furniture&sprefix=blackout+ez+window&sr=1-1-catcorr) and it blocks light almost entirely. If I had actually followed the insulation instructions it might be 100%.

And I have a white nose l noise machine that works pretty well. Mostly my room just looks less like home now that it's dark and plantless.

u/GeoffAturax · 2 pointsr/audioengineering

No worries, I know what that’s like!

Also, I was recently helping a client in a very similar situation and from a bit of online research I found these curtains to be rated quite highly for acoustics. Can’t vouch for them personally yet, but worth a look and fairly cheap.

Would something like this or this work? I do not need blackout curtains though because all of the houses around here have rolladens. So if there were something cheaper it would be fine.

u/tunersharkbitten · 14 pointsr/Greyhounds

one thing i would recommend, assuming there is no vertical shaft and it is just a little nook, is to put soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling of that little alcove. make a little drape to go across the outside and get some sound deadening cloth and make a little "anti-boom" box for when there is thunder or fireworks or she just wants a nice safe quiet place. i have built a few of them for people in my neighborhood, we live close enough to disneyland and doggos FREAK THE FUCK OUT every night when they launch the fireworks. you can make a pretty nice "anti-boom" box for less than 100 dollars.

You're a big girl now!

These are very useful for someone who needs to sleep during the day. They're also good for keeping the heat in/out of your apartment which can help on heating bills. If you get them, make sure to choose the right size and style.

A cheaper option would be a sleep mask set, but that doesn't seem to fit in the 'for my apartment' theme and some people aren't comfortable with them.

u/justtiptoeingthru2 · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

Is that your tv reflecting off the window?

There must be a dog/cat/raccoon/whatever triggering the motion detection. Maybe brushing up against the tire swing and setting it in motion which then turns on the motion-light sensor by your window.

I’d get a blackout curtain like this one.

u/frozenottsel · 3 pointsr/AnimeFigures

Direct sunlight will probably fade the paint over time.

Putting them in a spot out of direct sunlight and/or using some sheer curtains will be a big help to preventing any major sunlight related fading.

u/sk00ter21 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I second those. I also got these recently, which I like even better. The darker colors block out everything.

u/teriyakisoba · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I used these in navy blue for a while and was happy with them. Some light did come in at the sides because of how my curtain rods hung but I never noticed any through the curtains themselves. It wasn't enough to wake me up or keep me awake but YMMV.

u/Pertinaxed · 1 pointr/Nootropics

Vitamin D helps to govern the circadian rhythm by signalling to the body that it's morning, so make sure you're taking it as early in the day as you possibly can. I take it with breakfast. To anyone supplementing with D3, I would also recommend taking supplemental vitamin K2.

Once I got into my early twenties I also lost my ability to sleep in late, and it pissed me off to no end. The eventual solution was combining blackout curtains with an eye mask. Now that the ambient morning light in my room has been dramatically reduced, I can sleep in again without any problems.

Do you exercise? I had terrible insomnia, depression, anxiety and fucked around with nootropics, antidepressants and therapy for a year. Then I started going to the gym for a 30-40 minute 600 calorie aerobic burn, twice a day every day, and it all cleared up in a matter of weeks. Not only do I sleep more soundly, but I also require less sleep than I did before.

The downsides? Nothing surprising: it's time-consuming, physically painful, and aesthetically repulsive (because you spend time in gyms). But after the first few weeks it becomes a routine, and even with all this, the benefits so dramatically outweigh the costs that I can't see myself ever stopping.

I'm not saying this will necessarily be the solution for you but if you haven't tried it yet, please make sure you do. I feel like a fucking moron for not figuring it out sooner. Part of the reason I stayed away from aerobics is that I was stuck on the Paleo bandwagon, and bought wholesale into the idea "chronic cardio" necessarily leads to "overtraining." Getting over that prejudice, and eating more carbs to support my training was the best thing I ever did for my health.

You can do curtains or get a bolt of fabric. I've been considering getting this for mine

u/imawitchbitch · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

You can get blackout curtains in different colors. You can also make your own by attaching something like THIS to the back.

Right now those curtains are such a heavy block of dark color in an otherwise light room.

u/Quorum_Sensing · 6 pointsr/nursing

Congratulations! All units are different, so I'll just say ask questions. Don't let yourself become a jaded judgemental asshole. You get to go home. No matter what they did to themselves, there is a human in that bed having the worst time of their life. That's punishment enough.

As to joining the under world:

Sleep hygine. Do all 3 shifts in a row. Get home before the sunlight gets on top of you and you get the dreaded second wind. Eat, drink, shower and sack out fast. Splurge on a nice bed and linens. Pack lunches and eat clean. You can and will pork out fast on night shift living on pizza and donuts.

Black out window covers
These are better than any shades or curtains. No light gets in. Meth house level coverage. I could never sleep with a mask on, so these were a must.

White noise machine There are tons of options for this. Most are some recorded loop which your brain fixates on the pattern of, and does the opposite of making you sleepy. This is truly white noise from a fan and you can adjust the volume and pitch by twisting it and adjusting the venturi's. They've been made sine the 70's and I also used them in my kids room, have seen them in doctors offices, etc. No need for ear plugs with one of these.

u/sixam · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

We bought these from Amazon. Absolutely no light gets through them. The only light in the room comes from around the edges where they aren't flush against the walls.

u/thenaturalo7 · 3 pointsr/firstworldproblems

I have the same problem. Once the sun comes up, and the light enters my windows I can't stay asleep. Then I bought black out curtains. They block out almost all light making your bedroom pitch black regardless of the time of day and are worth every penny. Now, my only problem is when I'm on vacation and the hotel I'm staying at doesn't have them.
