I’m not sure how you use notebooks, but for artists there is an absolutely amazing deal on prismacolor markers. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007L4A4GI/ref=pd_gwm_simh_0?pf_rd_p=a827eccb-5ee4-4a9d-90fe-6ea7ea646e7e&pf_rd_s=blackjack-personal-2&pf_rd_t=Gateway&pf_rd_i=mobile&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=YG11CRMT23X9MK7T98QC&pd_rd_wg=37Q4U&pd_rd_r=YG11CRMT23X9MK7T98QC&pf_rd_r=YG11CRMT23X9MK7T98QC&pf_rd_p=a827eccb-5ee4-4a9d-90fe-6ea7ea646e7e&pd_rd_w=TPe3Y&pd_rd_i=B007L4A4GI

I wish I could buy them myself ^ but they are of really good quality and at a really good price. Michaels also has planners, planner stickers etc on sale below, and they have a whole list of coupons on their front page that apply to just about anything. Michaels has a lot of great notebook accessories and some decent notebooks, though it’s really for the accessories.

As someone who just started with calligraphy, I'm here to tell you, reddit: you can learn to write like this. Calligraphy is a great skill to learn in your spare time. It's not hard, just takes practice. This particular script is called Uncial (pronounced un-shel). You need a flat-tipped pen or marker. You can use a chisel tip marker if you have nothing else. If you feel like buying something to practice with, these markers are great for beginners.

You're going to write differently than you were probably taught. Write with your arm, not your fingertips. It takes some practice but you will be rewarded with some fine, fluid writing which may even surprise yourself. Here's more info.

Find a writing sample or maybe a guide from a book with letters that look attractive to you, and then try to recreate each one. (There can be many different variations on one script!)

Think back to first grade when you would write out a whole page of "a"s just for practice. That's what you're going to do. Whole lines of each letter. Practice until you start to understand the basic forms that make up the alphabet you're going for. For example, with uncial letters, the same c-shape stroke can become the letter C, D, E, G, O, Q, T, or U depending on how you finish it. Once you understand the basic shapes of a script, it will start to make sense and flow naturally through each letter. Just practice; write a little each day. You can do it!

And come join us in /r/calligraphy!

It really depends on your budget, what were you thinking? Obviously there's a lot of directions to go in. Whatever path you take, I also recommend getting better pencils and paper from an art supply store. It's important to do digital and physical. Both skills will always be handy for an artist. I'm using a Surface Pro 4 great for what you mentioned, and it's mind blowing. The Surface Pro series is going to be a bit more economical compared to the Wacom stuff. The reason to go more Wacom/Surface Pro is the same others have already mentioned. Pressure sensitivity! It can detect more, and get more detail. There are two kinds of digital drawing. Drawing directly on the screen (preferred, you can see what you're doing) or drawing off screen on a sensor pad, that's attached through a USB chord (cheaper). With the Surface Pro you can draw directly on the screen. For programs I'd recommend Photoshop or Clip Studio if you want something a little cheaper that's arguable to be just as good if not better to inking Manga and Comics. Another reason to avoid Ipads and Phones, etc. is that they don't have the software to run normal computer programs, they run slimmed down versions which only give you a little not a lot. That's a bit of my take on the computer stuff. If you're curious for physical stuff at all, I'm using a brush pen from Pentel and another from Copic which would be good for anime/manga art as you mentioned. Right now I'm also drawing some comics physically with it, and it's doing the job of like 10-20 pens I would normally use. Plus they are both refillable. Inking lets you get crisp lines and you can erase the pencils away afterwards. Here's the paper I'm using, which already comes with light blue guide lines printed on it (the lines are the standard comic formatting for American Comics). They are easy to get rid of while scanning.

That big pen with the three colours is called a trio marker. Looks like you can get them on amazon for $20. I have never used them before so I can't comment on their quality.

I recommend looking on http://paperandinksupply.com/ or http://www.johnnealbooks.com/ for a penholder, nibs, and ink, and some paper that can handle wet media. Personally, I like dip pens better than cartridge pens, but it is a matter of preference. There is lots of info in the wiki of this subreddit on where and what to buy.

If you want a cartridge pen, people seem to like the pilot parallel line of pens. I have seen them for around $20.

So far I have been talking about broad nib pens, but there is also pointed nib calligraphy. Your GF seems interested in broad nib though, so I would start there.

Also, asking for help is always welcome here!

For subtle panel lining (which I think would look good on this kit) try this cheap pen, the Copic Multiliner Grey 0.03 (Cool Grey or Warm Grey, both are actually pretty light grey). You can easily control the darkness or lightness with how many times you trace over it, it cleans off really well (perhaps too well, easy to rub off, but I don't do much with the kit but pose it once on the shelf). The fine point gundam markers sort of "stain" the plastic, which is good sometimes, but I like how well these work for subtle stuff on light colored kits.

  • The Pathfinder Combat Pad is a must have tool, imo.
  • If you get the chessex mat, then use Crayola Ultra-Clean Washable Markers and you'll never have to worry about your mat being stained.

Other things I've done, there are lots of free "rpg background sound" websites you can visit. Some of them even have built-in mixers where you can up certain sounds or not. For instance, there was one I visited that had a tavern playing greensleeves. Other than the lute, it matched exactly what I'd expect in a common room so I just turned the lute off and just had the noise of the people, random chair shuffles, random dish clinks, a quiet crackling fire. While this was going on I just had a picture of a common room up on the TV. Likewise I did this for forest sounds and a cavern.

An awesome thing I saw one GM do was take double-cardboard (as in extra thick cardboard, could be replicad by two pieces of "regular" cardboard glued together) and he cut lines for the grid, and spray painted it with "sand" paint. It made an awesome sandstone dungeon scene. And since it was all cardboard he could cut the rooms separate and just laid them out on the table when we encountered each room. When we were approaching the dungeon he had random lego pieces for when we were at an oasis (so rocks and trees sorta thing--not the actual bricks, but pieces that were actual lego rocks and palm trees.).

    Obviously having miniatures, helps.

Other things that look awesome are the 3d dungeon tiles that you see many places, but the ones with walls are actually really hard to play with, so I'd stay away from those (which is most of the 3d pieces).

A set of brush-tip alcohol markers (Spectrum Noir or Ohuhu if you want to save money, Copic or Prismacolor if price isn't an issue) and a pad of marker paper. At 12, I'd probably skip the super expensive ones and get this set and get some Canson marker paper or bristol board to go with them (paper type is important with alcohol markers).

Maribu Art Caryons are a lot of fun. They're nothing like children's crayons. They feel a lot like oil pastels when drawing with them on paper, until you add water, then they behave like watercolors. You can buy them individually or in four packs.

Just to give another option besides the Tombows, I use a combination of the Huhuhue Double Ended and the Huhuhue Fine Tips.

With a decent notebook (ie. not a composition book) I get minimal bleeding and the pens are super affordable.

I don't know if you have a case for pens, but I recently bought this one and I'm super happy with it.

Thank you for your service!

Thank you for the contest.

A set of copic markers would be amazing! Good luck!

u/inaiggs2 · 5 pointsr/ZeroWaste

Haven’t tried it myself, but your post got me thinking...you could order a refillable marker like this one and fill it up with your favorite DIY stain remover. Might have to try this myself, I’m habitually spilling crap all over myself and I️ do love me a good Tide-to-go.

You're looking at about $75 for both, but they look great.

Edit: a quick dbs thing I did with them a few months ago https://imgur.com/zpOpHsu

This great artist adcartattack on youtube uses them too.

These look like the cheap markers that come in packs with tons of colors. I used to get them for xmas and my bday for years because I LOVED art as a kid. I am almost sure I had a similar looking pack of markers as this kid. Not every family can afford Crayola all the time hahaha

u/rjudd85 · 2 pointsr/Coloring

That's lovely, great work!

Crayola markers? As in something like this, or am I way off the mark? (Edit: I'm kinda new to this!)

u/nsjobuk · 3 pointsr/aphextwin

Not stupid at all. Making ur own shirt might actually make it more special to you and it would bypass red bubble. Maybe instead of using a computer monitor you could print out the logo in the desired size, make a stencil of it, then just fill in the stencil with a dye pen:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0026Y6X5E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_u7l.zb1JPVT43

Obviously having one professionally made would be nice too, alls I'm saying is it's not a stupid idea:):):)

Edit: Also, might be a good idea to separate the front and back of the shirt with cardboard while filling in the stencil so none of the dye bleeds through

Looks great, he's very talented! Definitely have him check out copic paper, it will make blending easier and smoother so you won't see the overlapping lines. Also the paper he is using is too absorbent, if he gets this paper or something similar it will waste way less ink.

Yeah no prob. I'll put them in this order: Lead Holder (very dark), sharpener (needs special sharpener, trust me you really need it), GraphGear, Copics, Chameleon, fine liners (I'll put the ones I use, but Micron's are a little more expensive option for better quality).
